Those who do get through enjoy a packed programme of Setmana del Mar activities. On Mondays and Tuesdays, the children learn about at-oneness with the sea and marine geology. The Es Vedrà, Es Vedranell and Islotes de Poniente nature reserves help them understand and appreciate our treasured surroundings. On Wednesdays, activities move to the Ses Salines nature reserve, where instructors take the children on excursions around the salt marshes or sand dunes, or on birdwatching trips, depending on each edition. Drawing the week to a close, Thursdays and Fridays feature workshops, sailing practice and visits to the Cova de ses Llagostes natural aquarium and the fishermen’s association. These two days are also the opportunity to enjoy the range of activities held at the Club. AIMS OF THE INITIATIVE
By staging the Setmana del Mar, the CNSA is fulfilling the following aims: mardeIbiza18
· From an environmental point of view, encouraging schoolchildren to respect and care for the surrounding environment whilst suggesting how to transmit this message to their immediate circle of friends and family. ·From a sporting point of view, promoting sailing as a sport, whilst also cherishing the local tradition of the sea as a means of transport and communication. ·Keeping alive the traditional side of our culture through visits, activities and workshops held throughout the event. ·Introducing children to the marine environment and offering the opportunity to continue at intensive summer courses, which in turn creates a pool of future sailors and sportsmen and women. SCHOOLS SELECTED
· Contributing to an educational project which will have an impact on pupils during a specific period of their schooling.
In total, over two hundred children from eleven schools across the island were registered this year. All of them were in the fifth grade of their primary education (Table 1).
