After 6 years of successfully running breakfast meetings, 4Networking recently launched evening sessions for those that find the 8-10am breakfast meetings difficult to juggle with childcare, travel and work commitments. “Our groups in Andover, Basingstoke, Newbury, Winchester and all around this area are vibrant, popular and refer tens of thousands of pounds worth of business to each other,” explained Area Leader Coral Iles of Business Wide Services. “We’re delighted to be launching fortnightly evening meetings so that even more people can attend. Tree Runners: Test Valley’s Newest Attraction Offers a Forest Adventure by Angela Wilbraham, Community Manager, of inspiredcommunity.co.uk If you’ve got a head for heights and a sense of adventure, you’ll love the newest attraction to Test Valley: Tree Runners in the beautiful Harewood Forest just outside of Andover. The brand new high ropes course gives you the opportunity to climb high amongst the Douglas Fir trees, daring you to walk across suspended and wobbly planks, fly between the trees on a zip wire, and jump from a perfectly good platform just a little too high from the ground. I spent a couple of hours there and had a thoroughly good time. There are courses with different levels of difficulty that you can work through. And the great thing is that they have a course especially for kids to go on without needing adults to be with them – perfect to entertain them on weekends and school holidays. It also feels very safe as Tree Runners have installed the latest in equipment and harnesses where it is impossible for you to not be connected to the wire: only one carabiner can be unlocked at a time so there’s always one that stays connected (honestly, it makes sense when you try it). For the kids, the system keeps them attached all the time so they don’t need parents to be on the course with them. When I first arrived at the course, I was surprised to see just how many people were there; over 100 people had come that day and business has been brisk since they opened, according to Tree Runners founder Ben Emley. My Tentative Forest Adventure I was keen to get going, and after a briefing about how it all worked, we climbed up to the first platform on the ‘green’ course. I’ll admit, as I took my first step off the platform and onto the wobbly planks high up off the ground, my heart was beating fast but I tried hard not to let it show. It didn’t take long to get into the swing of things and it quickly became fun. The highlight was definitely the long zip wire to what I thought was the end of the course. But oh no, to get off you have to launch yourself off a platform to do a ‘base jump’. While I had watched Ben do it (he said even he took a second to think about it although I’m not sure if that was just to reassure me!) and had seen that once he’d leapt, the descent was fully controlled, I still found it very hard to take that leap. After a bit of dithering I made myself do it and then wondered what the fuss had been about! It was a very satisfying feeling to have conquered that little bit of fear and to know I’d completed the first course. I’ll definitely return to try the next levels although the final Tarzan swing sounds shocking.

Believing Harewood Forest with its Fir trees to be the perfect place for such a course in England, Ben first applied for planning permission six years ago. Finally, after a lengthy battle to get permission, Tree Runners was opened at the end of March 2012. It’s not the first of its kind in the UK: Go Ape brought the concept to the country back in 2002 and now has 28 courses in Forestry Commission land across the UK. But Ben believes his course is different: “We’re totally safe using the new harnessing system, we have nine tree-to-tree zip lines, which no one else has, we’ve got snowboards and bikes you can use high up in the trees and we can be more adventurous so we have plans to grow the course and open up Harewood Forest to people”. This part of Harewood Forest is unusual in that it used to be a municipal dumping ground for tanks, which is why it has proper access with concrete roads making it possible for Tree Runners to be based here. Ben leases the land from owner Lord Camden, as he does with the paintballing. To get Tree Runners going, Ben secured private investments of £250,000. He then chose a French company to design and build the course over five weeks (which they did in the snow in February apparently!). He’d like people leaving the military to know there are opportunities to work at Tree Runners as well, having enjoyed working with them before at the paintballing course. Have a Go! Tree Runners is a great destination for adventurous people and for families. Ben would also like to attract office team building groups, hen or stag parties and school parties. Prices for adults (oaks) are £30 at peak time or £22 off peak; for kids aged 10-17 (saplings), it costs £20 peak, or £15 off peak; and for little ones aged 6-9 (acorns), it’s £12 peak or £9 off peak. Adventurous Ben’s Discovery of Forest Rope Courses Ben has run the paintballing course in the same forest for the past eight years (originally set up in 1997). An adventurer at heart, he has opted to go on several expeditions with bushman Ray Mears to Belize and Namibia. But it was during his time in France, where he canoed, white water rafted, and cycled across the country by himself (read a very entertaining account of that trip here), that he came across these kinds of tree courses.

The online systems can either; 1. Help you raise invoices via an online interface and then either email or print if you really need to post to your customer. 2. Undertake your entire bookkeeping and accounting function. You can raise invoices on the system and email to clients and then record when you are paid by your customers. If your company is currently sending out around 100 invoices to customers per month this will be costing you £60 per month before you even consider the cost of envelopes and printing. On online system such as Xero (www.xero.com) costs a fraction of this and will also help you keep on top of your company’s finances.

Test Valley Scores in Top 20 Rural Areas to Live, Says The Halifax by Angela Wilbraham, Community Manager, of inspiredcommunity.co.uk We’re lucky to live in Test Valley, according to the latest survey from the Halifax, which placed our region in the top 20 rural areas to live in Great Britain.

landscape, picturesque villages and towns like Romsey, Stockbridge and Andover, all with the beautiful River Test flowing through it.

Test Valley actually came 14th out of a total 119 local authority areas across Great Britain. We scored particularly well for employment at 81.4%, well above the national average of 70%. But the score also took into account factors like the weather (although the Isle of Wight is the sunniest spot), income levels, health and life expectancy, as well as things like broadband access, education (class sizes and GCSE results), crime, population density, traffic and CO2 emissions, and affordability of housing (compared to local earnings), all giving us a relatively good quality of life.

And now the serious stuff… how they gathered the data in Halifax’s own words: “The Halifax Rural Areas Quality of Life Survey tracks where living standards are highest in Great Britain by ranking local performance across key indicators covering the labour market, the housing market, the environment, education and health. The survey examines all 119 rural local authority districts and is based on data at local authority district (LAD) level. Data has been gathered from a number of sources, including Halifax, Point Topic (Broadband data), ONS, DEFRA, the Met Office, the Department for Transport, Department of Children, Schools and Families, the Department of Energy and Climate Change, the Welsh Assembly, Northern Ireland Government and the Scottish Executive.”

But if we didn’t live in Test Valley, the other places to consider would be the East of England as East and South Cambridgeshire, and East Hertfordshire came first, third and fifth respectively, with Wychavon in the West Midlands coming second. Other Hampshire places featuring in the top 50 include East Hampshire (32) and the New Forest (44). Wiltshire featured in 39th place. That said, I’m not planning to move any time soon! Orphaned Baby Birds

As everyone knows the initial rearing of these young birds will take part in the nest/crevice/ hole or whatever else the parents choose to use. However, the young once they start to fledge will venture out and start to explore.

g. bird is not moving at all, lethargic, listless, nonresponsive to sound or movement

Birds are not hatched fully feathered nor do they have the automatic ability to fly. Therefore most of their early attempts end in failure and so they end up on the ground. This is the second phase of rearing where the young call and the parents bring them food.

This is also the phase where many are brought in to our Clinic or to wildlife rescue groups as “abandoned”. PLEASE DO NOT DO THIS! Many of these young are unable to cope with the stress of being hand-reared and many succumb because the artificial diets are just not as good as the diet fed by the parents. All-in-all well over 80% of these young garden birds will die. Sadly the vast majority are normal and healthy when presented to us. This is why we tell people to take them straight back and leave them where they found them. This works well if the baby bird has only just been picked up but if it’s more than a few hours then the chances are that the parents will have left.

April saw the annual Mayor’s Charity Ball held at The Lights in Andover. The event was hosted by the current Mayor of the Test Valley, Councillor Mrs Zilliah Brooks. It was a fund raiser for her chosen charities: Open Sight (Andover), Romsey Young Carers, Andover Young Carers, and Romsey Sea Cadets. “It is the residents of Test Valley who make me so proud to be the Mayor of Test Valley,” said Councillor Brooks in her thank you speech to the attendees. The Event was well attended by local business, members of the Test Valley Council, and civic dignitaries from all over Hampshire which included the Mayor and Mayoress of Basingstoke, Mayor and Mayoress of Eastleigh, Mayor and Mayoress of Fareham, Mayor and Mayoress of Gosport, Chairman and Chairman’s Lady of Hart, Mayor and Mayoress of Havant, Mayor and Mayoress of Rushmoor and also the Mayor and Mayoress of Winchester. We were entertained by dance

troupe Jivelution with a selection of 1920’s moves, and to make a perfect night complete there was great music to dance to from The Basingstoke Concert Big Band. Business Plans! Who needs them? No matter what you do in life, if you want to improve the first thing you need to know is – what is my current position? I am assuming that you actually want your business to improve. Given that is the case, you can only look forward to growth once you know the starting position. You then have to define where you are going. There are 5 key reasons for putting a plan in place: 1. To avoid big mistakes 2. To remove emotion from decisions

A common framework for you business plan might be: 1. Executive Summary

4. To be able to measure change

2. Company Profile including a mission statement that describes your business and why you are in it

5. To raise Capital

3. Competitive analysis

3. To ensure full and proper communication

Writing a business plan is often the first real struggle for a business owner. But by completing the plan you will identify gaps early in the process allowing different strategies to be adopted, thus providing a reality check versus the initial enthusiasm. You will identify new ideas, different approaches and fresh perspectives. When you use your business plan as a working document it will help you to identify actions that need to be taken to make things happen. Your business plan will be the “road map’’ of your business. It will show you how to get to where you want to go. To develop a good plan, you need to write down the answers to quite a few questions. The first thing to think about is the ‘end game’. What is it you are trying to achieve and by when? Consider where you want to be in say, 5 years time. What turnover do you want to achieve? How much money do you want to be earning? How many hours do you want to work each week? Once you have determined your 5 year horizon, you can start to come back towards today with a 3 year view and then 12 to 18 month goals. Always keep consistency with the 5 year vision. So what do you need to do to achieve your goals? Now is the time to ask some short term questions? Do you want more customers or steady customers?

What is your competition doing? Do you know enough about the competition? Will advertising help increase your sales? If so, what kind of advertising and what media should be used? What should your price be? What overheads do you have and split them into fixed and variable? How much money do you need? What skills do you need and must you employ them or can you outsource? How will you manage cash-flow and profit?

4. Marketing Strategy including a pricing strategy 5. Skill requirements outlining what people you might need and when 6. Financial plan including revenue plan, profit plan and most importantly a cash flow plan Remember your Business Plan is your method of knowing if you are succeeding or not so it must be reviewed regularly and if necessary changed depending upon such things as competitive pressures, market changes and needs of your customers. Always be prepared to consult your customers. Review your plan for consistency. Is it coherent? Is it realistic? This is your guide to your business. It will help you get what you want. Keep it updated. Never forget the words of that great British Statesman, Winston Churchill. “He who fails to plan is planning to fail”. Don’t’ let it be you. Contact me if you need to know more. There are some worrying statistics regarding children’s use of computers: • 1 in 3 children have been victims of cyber bullying • 80% of children report that they access the internet alone • Over 22% of children have internet access in their bedrooms (Child exploitation and online protection centre) Do you know what your child is watching online, who they are chatting to and who they are ‘friends’ with? The computer can be an indispensable part of a child’s education but can expose them to some unwanted side effects. What can you do to protect them? All Windows based computers have Parental Controls which allow you to: • Control the type of websites that are accessed • Control the types of games/programs that are run • Control when the computer can be used But is this enough? In addition, there are some new child protection software packages that increase

your ability to protect your child. After all every one of us is born an atheist and would live contented, moral, and productive lives as such, save for one thing, religion being forced upon us. So we become Christian, Jewish, Muslim or Hindu children without any choice in the matter. Should young children be exposed to such blatant shows of faith?

A large crowd gathered on Good Friday to watch Andover’s Passion. Amongst the crowd were many younger members of the community. The Passion which appears to be a relatively new phenomenon is forced upon us more graphically than say Christmas.

If the church want to hold these sort of events they should do so in private, I am sure it would be a completely different story if say the BNP chose to hold a rally in the town centre. So should we allow what some believe to be outdated values to parade through our town centre for all to see? Such an explicit act with such a clear depiction of blood and pain on Jesus’ face are disturbing scenes. What film rating would such an event get 12A? 15 or even an 18.

In his letter on page 17 of this week’s Andover Advertiser entitled ‘Please Keep Your Religious Beliefs Private’, Mr. Name possesses the opinion that ‘…religion is an outdated attempt of an ancient interest, in which such organisations have no business.’ Rev Andrew Ashdown narrated the proceedings and reminded the assembled crowd that, “Christ is crucified by the authorities, his people run away, yet he overcomes death and in the face of rejection he offers his love and forgiveness for all.”

On Good Friday, the Andover Passion brought local churches and people from the Christian community in Andover and district together for the most important weekend of this faith’s calendar, graphically recreating the scenes of the crucifixion. The public play was performed in Andover High Street and depicted Jesus Christ’s trial, crucifixion and resurrection. Sharon O’Leary, the play’s producer, said, “Christians can achieve a lot when they put aside their differences and concentrate on the essential truths that they share.
