After 6 years of successfully running breakfast meetings, 4Networking recently launched evening sessions for those that find the 8-10am breakfast meetings difficult to juggle with childcare, travel and work commitments. “Our groups in Andover, Basingstoke, Newbury, Winchester and all around this area are vibrant, popular and refer tens of thousands of pounds worth of business to each other,” explained Area Leader Coral Iles of Business Wide Services. “We’re delighted to be launching fortnightly evening meetings so that even more people can attend. We are inviting anyone interested to book and come along to see what it’s all about. “ The White Hart Hotel in Whitchurch will be hosting the evening meeting and providing dinner for guests alongside the valuable personal support, inspiration, learning and undoubtedly plenty of business opportunities on offer. “We have been a 4Networking member for just 6 months and have secured business with 10 new

clients through it, with many more projects in the pipeline,” commented Helen Buteux of I Am Now Media, based in Hampshire. “It’s been a thrill to meet so many fun people, discuss topical issues and grow our business with 4Networkers. I’ve become something of a breakfast connoisseur and am looking forward to now becoming a dinner expert whilst visiting the evening groups.” Throughout the last 6 years 4N has developed a reputation for doing business the fun way. Members often take part in charity collections, parties and social get-togethers, usually with a great deal of laughter, whilst still talking business. ‘Every meeting uniquely provides three 1-2-1 ten minute appointments between members so they can meet, like, know and trust each other. These are the basic principles of doing business the 4N way,” Coral told us. “Where else can you get 3 appointments in 30 minutes, guaranteed?”  •  0845 123 4444

Tree Runners: Test Valley’s Newest Attraction Offers a Forest Adventure by Angela Wilbraham, Community Manager, of If you’ve got a head for heights and a sense of adventure, you’ll love the newest attraction to Test Valley: Tree Runners in the beautiful Harewood Forest just outside of Andover. The brand new high ropes course gives you the opportunity to climb high amongst the Douglas Fir trees, daring you to walk across suspended and wobbly planks, fly between the trees on a zip wire, and jump from a perfectly good platform just a little too high from the ground. I spent a couple of hours there and had a thoroughly good time. There are courses with different levels of difficulty that you can work through. And the great thing is that they have a course especially for kids to go on without needing adults to be with them – perfect to entertain them on weekends and school holidays. It also feels very safe as Tree Runners have installed the latest in equipment and harnesses where it is impossible for you to not be connected to the wire: only one carabiner can be unlocked at a time so there’s always one that stays connected (honestly, it makes sense when you try it). For the kids, the system keeps them attached all the time so they don’t need parents to be on the course with them. When I first arrived at the course, I was surprised to see just how many people were there; over 100 people had come that day and business has been brisk since they opened, according to Tree Runners founder Ben Emley. My Tentative Forest Adventure I was keen to get going, and after a briefing about how it all worked, we climbed up to the first platform on the ‘green’ course. I’ll admit, as I took my first step off the platform and onto the wobbly planks high up off the ground, my heart was beating fast but I tried hard not to let it show. It didn’t take long to get into the swing of things and it quickly became fun. The highlight was definitely the long zip wire to what I thought was the end of the course. But oh no, to get off you have to launch yourself off a platform to do a ‘base jump’. While I had watched Ben do it (he said even he took a second to think about it although I’m not sure if that was just to reassure me!) and had seen that once he’d leapt, the descent was fully controlled, I still found it very hard to take that leap. After a bit of dithering I made myself do it and then wondered what the fuss had been about! It was a very satisfying feeling to have conquered that little bit of fear and to know I’d completed the first course. I’ll definitely return to try the next levels although the final Tarzan swing sounds shocking.

Believing Harewood Forest with its Fir trees to be the perfect place for such a course in England, Ben first applied for planning permission six years ago. Finally, after a lengthy battle to get permission, Tree Runners was opened at the end of March 2012. It’s not the first of its kind in the UK: Go Ape brought the concept to the country back in 2002 and now has 28 courses in Forestry Commission land across the UK. But Ben believes his course is different: “We’re totally safe using the new harnessing system, we have nine tree-to-tree zip lines, which no one else has, we’ve got snowboards and bikes you can use high up in the trees and we can be more adventurous so we have plans to grow the course and open up Harewood Forest to people”. This part of Harewood Forest is unusual in that it used to be a municipal dumping ground for tanks, which is why it has proper access with concrete roads making it possible for Tree Runners to be based here. Ben leases the land from owner Lord Camden, as he does with the paintballing. To get Tree Runners going, Ben secured private investments of £250,000. He then chose a French company to design and build the course over five weeks (which they did in the snow in February apparently!). He’d like people leaving the military to know there are opportunities to work at Tree Runners as well, having enjoyed working with them before at the paintballing course. Have a Go! Tree Runners is a great destination for adventurous people and for families. Ben would also like to attract office team building groups, hen or stag parties and school parties. Prices for adults (oaks) are £30 at peak time or £22 off peak; for kids aged 10-17 (saplings), it costs £20 peak, or £15 off peak; and for little ones aged 6-9 (acorns), it’s £12 peak or £9 off peak. For more local Test Valley articles, as well as local videos, event listings, and a groups section designed to help local organisations raise their profile and grow membership, take a look at, or call Angela on 01264 710 033.

Adventurous Ben’s Discovery of Forest Rope Courses Ben has run the paintballing course in the same forest for the past eight years (originally set up in 1997). An adventurer at heart, he has opted to go on several expeditions with bushman Ray Mears to Belize and Namibia. But it was during his time in France, where he canoed, white water rafted, and cycled across the country by himself (read a very entertaining account of that trip here), that he came across these kinds of tree courses.

The coming together of Parkes Browne in Andover and Brockmans Solicitors at Stockbridge will provide an expanded team of more than a dozen specialist staff able to service a wider area. The firm’s incorporated name is DBB Law LLP, but will be known as DBB Solicitors. Managing Partner Michelle Duckworth heads a management team including David Browne and Alison Brockman. “We are very flexible in our hours and approach,” said Michelle Duckworth. “We visit sick and elderly clients, we offer a flexible cost structure and our team is reactive to clients’ needs. DBB Solicitors is distinct, with a fresh perspective.” Alison Brockman sees the merger as meeting the changing landscape of the legal industry by adopting

a new corporate image and approach. “After working together over the past decade there’s a real synergy between us, with a similar approach to client care,” said David Browne. “The merger has provided a platform for us to further expand and grow,” Michelle said. “We are accredited by the Law Society within their Conveyance Quality Scheme and also members of APIL, the Association of Personal Injury Lawyers which ensures high standards of client care are maintained, and we are also members of Resolution which aims to ease the path of divorce,” said Alison Brockman. The firm is taking a more holistic approach to the law and is passionate about making a difference and getting involved in the community. “We want to hear the community voice and react to it,” added Michelle. They are already involved in work experience schemes and are active in the Andover Apprenticeship Scheme. DBB Solicitors also regularly cater for high net worth clients and are specialist commercial advisors, and as the two offices are a totally unified business, clients can be seen at either location.

Apex Care Apex Care is a specialist home care provider. It has been successfully assisting and bettering the lives of those in need for over a decade. As well as extending its services to the frail elderly and people with learning disabilities, Apex Care also welcomes physically disabled and younger people who require care but want to remain in the comfort of their own homes. With elderly people becoming less reluctant to enter residential homes, the demand for Domiciliary Care has become significantly more important in the past few years. Apex Care has responded to this demand and has developed its services to make itself one of the leading home care providers in the industry. It strives to provide care workers to clients in both the care homes industry and to individuals within their own homes. Its customer-focused service complies with the requirements of The Health and Social Care Act 2008 and thus customers requiring the care of Apex Care can be assured that their needs will be met by a professional organisation, in accordance with accredited guidelines. Apex Care offers its customers an assortment of care services. ⋅ Home Care for the elderly is for those individuals with a less severe need for care. Customers can invite carers into their homes for short term visits or for help with specific tasks such as bathing or light domestic duties. ⋅ Palliative and Terminal Care is a compassionate care service for customers who are chronically or terminally ill and require care to manage their symptoms. Given the sensitiveness of the situation, carers are trained to adopt a specialist approach to both the customers, their families and can even offer support for bereavement and grief. ⋅ Dementia Care can be provided to customers in their homes, depending upon the level of dementia symptoms they experience. ⋅ Live-in Care is the most comprehensive of Apex Cares services. Customers are enabled to remain in the comfort of their own homes, whilst benefiting from the services of a live-in carer who can look after you and manage your household. This service allows you to live YOUR way in YOUR home whilst providing you with companionship and support from a friendly carer day and night.

⋅ A pop-in service is available for clients wanting assistance with small but essential household tasks. ⋅ A Personal Care service is often used by customers requiring assistance with bathing and dressing. ⋅ Night Sitters and Sleepers are carers who spend the night at your home, allowing customers to enjoy the peace of mind and security at night. Our commitment to our clients is at the forefront of our priorities and thus, Apex Care ensures that it employs only the most competent, qualified and capable carers to reflect and enhance its first-class reputation. All employees undergo a thorough interview where their abilities will be rigorously checked alongside their references. CRB checks are compulsory for each member of staff as is the requirement for them to be registered with an NVQ level 2 within six months of commencing employment (if not already attained). Considering the care of its customers as central to its aims, Apex Care endeavours to provide its staff with role-appropriate training that will enable customers to experience the very best in care and attention as a result. The life of a carer is considerably rewarding and Apex Care targets its recruitment towards a wide and varied demographic of all ages and genders. Its youngest carer is just 18 and its oldest is over 70. Whether you want to be a live-in carer or would be willing to give short-term care, Apex Care can accommodate you. Typically live-in carers can expect to be with a client from morning to night, providing assistance with getting up in the morning to preparing meals for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Short-term carers will usually visit customers to attend to personal needs, light household duties and a range of other customer requirements. Save money and go online

A n d o v e r G a zet te

by Paul Croombs – Croombs Chartered Accountants With the huge price hike on first class stamps maybe it’s worth considering whether your business actually needs to send invoices out on paper. The online systems can either; 1. Help you raise invoices via an online interface and then either email or print if you really need to post to your customer. 2. Undertake your entire bookkeeping and accounting function. You can raise invoices on the system and email to clients and then record when you are paid by your customers. If your company is currently sending out around 100 invoices to customers per month this will be costing you £60 per month before you even consider the cost of envelopes and printing. On online system such as Xero ( costs a fraction of this and will also help you keep on top of your company’s finances.

In addition to the benefits above this will also help the environment as the Post Office do not have to manually deliver your invoice to your customer. Your customer can print the invoice if they want to or they can store it electronically. Either way there is a large cost saving for all involved. If your business would like a demonstration on how using an online system can help you save money and keep track of your finances please give us a call and we can arrange a meeting. Croombs Chartered Accountants are available for a free, no obligation consultation on how we can help your business, from helping you to get a grip of the numbers to discussing ways of minimising tax liabilities. Please phone 0845 409 7859 / 01264 361054 or visit for information on other services we can offer.

Test Valley Scores in Top 20 Rural Areas to Live, Says The Halifax by Angela Wilbraham, Community Manager, of We’re lucky to live in Test Valley, according to the latest survey from the Halifax, which placed our region in the top 20 rural areas to live in Great Britain.

landscape, picturesque villages and towns like Romsey, Stockbridge and Andover, all with the beautiful River Test flowing through it.

Test Valley actually came 14th out of a total 119 local authority areas across Great Britain. We scored particularly well for employment at 81.4%, well above the national average of 70%. But the score also took into account factors like the weather (although the Isle of Wight is the sunniest spot), income levels, health and life expectancy, as well as things like broadband access, education (class sizes and GCSE results), crime, population density, traffic and CO2 emissions, and affordability of housing (compared to local earnings), all giving us a relatively good quality of life.

And now the serious stuff… how they gathered the data in Halifax’s own words: “The Halifax Rural Areas Quality of Life Survey tracks where living standards are highest in Great Britain by ranking local performance across key indicators covering the labour market, the housing market, the environment, education and health. The survey examines all 119 rural local authority districts and is based on data at local authority district (LAD) level. Data has been gathered from a number of sources, including Halifax, Point Topic (Broadband data), ONS, DEFRA, the Met Office, the Department for Transport, Department of Children, Schools and Families, the Department of Energy and Climate Change, the Welsh Assembly, Northern Ireland Government and the Scottish Executive.”

But if we didn’t live in Test Valley, the other places to consider would be the East of England as East and South Cambridgeshire, and East Hertfordshire came first, third and fifth respectively, with Wychavon in the West Midlands coming second. Other Hampshire places featuring in the top 50 include East Hampshire (32) and the New Forest (44). Wiltshire featured in 39th place. That said, I’m not planning to move any time soon! Test Valley is such a wonderful place to live with its varied rural

Orphaned Baby Birds

by John Chitty BVetMed CertZooMed MRCVS, Consulting at Anton Vets, Andover In spite of the current weather, Spring is here and birds are starting to nest and breed.

f. head tilts, persistent circling motions, twitching, spasms or apparent blindness

As everyone knows the initial rearing of these young birds will take part in the nest/crevice/ hole or whatever else the parents choose to use. However, the young once they start to fledge will venture out and start to explore.

g. bird is not moving at all, lethargic, listless, nonresponsive to sound or movement

Birds are not hatched fully feathered nor do they have the automatic ability to fly. Therefore most of their early attempts end in failure and so they end up on the ground. This is the second phase of rearing where the young call and the parents bring them food.

i. mucous, blood or pussy discharges from eye, nose, ears, mouth or anus (vent)

This is also the phase where many are brought in to our Clinic or to wildlife rescue groups as “abandoned”. PLEASE DO NOT DO THIS! Many of these young are unable to cope with the stress of being hand-reared and many succumb because the artificial diets are just not as good as the diet fed by the parents. All-in-all well over 80% of these young garden birds will die. Sadly the vast majority are normal and healthy when presented to us. This is why we tell people to take them straight back and leave them where they found them. This works well if the baby bird has only just been picked up but if it’s more than a few hours then the chances are that the parents will have left.

h. gasping, sneezing, wheezing or other breathing difficulties

j. cat has had baby bird in its mouth If there are cats about (or it is on a path or in a road) in which case simply pick up the young bird and place it in the lower branches of the nearest tree or bush. This seems rather callous and certainly some of these young birds will die. However, they stand a much better chance left under their parents’ care than brought into human care .

So when should you intervene? Certainly, when the bird is obviously injured; a. blood from nose or beak, swelling or bruising around head indicating possible head trauma b. blood, obvious wounds anywhere on the body

c. limping, dragging or dangling wings or legs d. wings or legs protruding at abnormal angles from the body e. bird is using wings to move along ground or for support

Dear Friends, I can honestly say that out of every cruise I have been on, and I daren't brag about the number, Alaska was the best ever! It was a magical experience. Totally different to the Nowegian Fjords even to the extent of 'exciting'! Wildlife, Whales, Gold town of Skagway, Totem Poles of Ketchikan, Glaciers and beautiful scenery. Every stop totally different in character. This Alaska cruise is a Cruise In exclusive pricewise. Up to £600 per person cheaper than anyone else. Don't lose out if you want to see Alaska.

As the proverb hAs it, A fAir exchANge is No robbery. For many years we've used one supplier, thomas exchange, to exchange our currency. Come to think of it, it's many, many years, even when we were based in Victoria, back in our London days. We still use them to this day, buying online. their front page makes it easy for visitors by showing euros and dollars. they supply commission-free holiday money and traveller's cheques. We've found they always give a better rate than high street banks, the post Office, m&S and all travel agents. You buy online and the cash arrives the following day by post, for which you have to sign. their website is so there you go, a tip straight from the horse's mouth.

How often ‘Sold Out’ becomes ‘Not Sold Out’ because of cancelled cabins! We’re always sympathetic about cancellations because very often they’re caused by family problems. but misfortune for some is opportunity for others. We’ve two cancelled cabins on our Douro cruise in July. And no wonder the cruise was sold out! the value, with add-ons, was just amazing! At £655 per person for a main Deck cabin on a 5-star ship, cruising 4 nights with full board, plus 3 nights b&b in a 4-star hotel in July, it was a steal! It sold out so quickly we didn’t even keep a waiting list! So it’s first come, first served. even more amazing, the price is still the same! It should now be at least £840 due to massive flight and hotel price increases because of high season demand! but to sell these two cabins quickly, we’ve held the price. please don’t ask for any airport but Gatwick because, believe it or not, that’s all we can get! Cliff and rose are accompanying this cruise and can’t wait for their fourth visit! maybe, just maybe, they will see you in Oporto!

Business Plans! Who needs them? No matter what you do in life, if you want to improve the first thing you need to know is – what is my current position? I am assuming that you actually want your business to improve. Given that is the case, you can only look forward to growth once you know the starting position. You then have to define where you are going. There are 5 key reasons for putting a plan in place: 1. To avoid big mistakes 2. To remove emotion from decisions

A common framework for you business plan might be: 1. Executive Summary

4. To be able to measure change

2. Company Profile including a mission statement that describes your business and why you are in it

5. To raise Capital

3. Competitive analysis

3. To ensure full and proper communication

Writing a business plan is often the first real struggle for a business owner. But by completing the plan you will identify gaps early in the process allowing different strategies to be adopted, thus providing a reality check versus the initial enthusiasm. You will identify new ideas, different approaches and fresh perspectives. When you use your business plan as a working document it will help you to identify actions that need to be taken to make things happen. Your business plan will be the “road map’’ of your business. It will show you how to get to where you want to go. To develop a good plan, you need to write down the answers to quite a few questions. The first thing to think about is the ‘end game’. What is it you are trying to achieve and by when? Consider where you want to be in say, 5 years time. What turnover do you want to achieve? How much money do you want to be earning? How many hours do you want to work each week? Once you have determined your 5 year horizon, you can start to come back towards today with a 3 year view and then 12 to 18 month goals. Always keep consistency with the 5 year vision. So what do you need to do to achieve your goals? Now is the time to ask some short term questions? Do you want more customers or steady customers?

What is your competition doing? Do you know enough about the competition? Will advertising help increase your sales? If so, what kind of advertising and what media should be used? What should your price be? What overheads do you have and split them into fixed and variable? How much money do you need? What skills do you need and must you employ them or can you outsource? How will you manage cash-flow and profit?

4. Marketing Strategy including a pricing strategy 5. Skill requirements outlining what people you might need and when 6. Financial plan including revenue plan, profit plan and most importantly a cash flow plan Remember your Business Plan is your method of knowing if you are succeeding or not so it must be reviewed regularly and if necessary changed depending upon such things as competitive pressures, market changes and needs of your customers. Always be prepared to consult your customers. Review your plan for consistency. Is it coherent? Is it realistic? This is your guide to your business. It will help you get what you want. Keep it updated. Never forget the words of that great British Statesman, Winston Churchill. “He who fails to plan is planning to fail”. Don’t’ let it be you. Contact me if you need to know more. Good luck and see you next month. Tony Field, Business Advisor with ICON Business Solutions e-mail Mob: 07710 019964 Twitter: @tony4business

Is your child safe online? Take control!

A n d o v e r G a zet te

advises Peter Clarke from PC PAL

There are some worrying statistics regarding children’s use of computers: • 1 in 3 children have been victims of cyber bullying • 80% of children report that they access the internet alone • Over 22% of children have internet access in their bedrooms (Child exploitation and online protection centre) Do you know what your child is watching online, who they are chatting to and who they are ‘friends’ with? The computer can be an indispensable part of a child’s education but can expose them to some unwanted side effects. What can you do to protect them? All Windows based computers have Parental Controls which allow you to: • Control the type of websites that are accessed • Control the types of games/programs that are run • Control when the computer can be used But is this enough? In addition, there are some new child protection software packages that increase

your ability to protect your child. These can provide: • Email notifications – know what your child is up to without having to ask • Notification about the subject and content of Instant Messaging • Visibility of your child’s social networking ‘friends’, photos they post and view • Remote login – manage your account from any computer with internet access • Multiple profiles for different aged children and, of course, adults! • Detailed reports to allow you to check the content viewed on all protected computers The computer shouldn’t be something to be feared or avoided but does need adequate parental control to make a safe learning environment for your child. If you have questions regarding how to set up basic parental controls or would like more information on enhanced child safety via child protection software or have any other computer issue then contact PC PAL on 01264 931000, email or visit

What Mum Always Said I was having a bath, I was lying in repose, When I noticed a spot on the end of my nose, It was glistening and shiny, so glowing and red, And it didn’t comply with what Mum always said, “When you get older your spots disappear, You’ll be left with a skin that’s so perfectly clear”, I’m now forty eight, so that’s clearly not true, And this spot on my nose is now spoiling my view, There are two on my chin; a collection of spots, If a pen was to hand, I could join all the dots, So if Mum was correct, in the things that she said Then why are these spots sprouting out of my head? ©Jan Jack’s Perfect Verse 2010 If you would like to commission a Perfect Verse for a special occasion please contact me via

have to do it while you are young and gullible. It’s much tougher to get an adult to suddenly start believing. After all every one of us is born an atheist and would live contented, moral, and productive lives as such, save for one thing, religion being forced upon us. So we become Christian, Jewish, Muslim or Hindu children without any choice in the matter. Should young children be exposed to such blatant shows of faith?

A large crowd gathered on Good Friday to watch Andover’s Passion. Amongst the crowd were many younger members of the community. The Passion which appears to be a relatively new phenomenon is forced upon us more graphically than say Christmas.

If the church want to hold these sort of events they should do so in private, I am sure it would be a completely different story if say the BNP chose to hold a rally in the town centre. So should we allow what some believe to be outdated values to parade through our town centre for all to see? Such an explicit act with such a clear depiction of blood and pain on Jesus’ face are disturbing scenes. What film rating would such an event get 12A? 15 or even an 18.

If the religionists are going to brainwash you they

Why, when kids are slaughtered most nights on Andover High Street, do some people get upset at the odd crucifixion? how this man, as with others unsure of their own convictions, hides behind anonymity). In his letter on page 17 of this week’s Andover Advertiser entitled ‘Please Keep Your Religious Beliefs Private’, Mr. Name possesses the opinion that ‘…religion is an outdated attempt of an ancient interest, in which such organisations have no business.’ Rev Andrew Ashdown narrated the proceedings and reminded the assembled crowd that, “Christ is crucified by the authorities, his people run away, yet he overcomes death and in the face of rejection he offers his love and forgiveness for all.”

On Good Friday, the Andover Passion brought local churches and people from the Christian community in Andover and district together for the most important weekend of this faith’s calendar, graphically recreating the scenes of the crucifixion. The public play was performed in Andover High Street and depicted Jesus Christ’s trial, crucifixion and resurrection. Sharon O’Leary, the play’s producer, said, “Christians can achieve a lot when they put aside their differences and concentrate on the essential truths that they share. It is great when we work together as brothers and sisters, regardless of denomination.” Someone who evidently wasn’t that keen to work with Ms. O’Leary, or anyone else who attended this production for that matter, was a ‘Mr. Name,’ from ‘and Address Supplied, Andover’ (notice KAWASAKI

Maybe if more people had a little more faith and a little less cynicism, there’d be less mindless, alcohol and drug-fuelled violence on Andover’s streets.

Give me love and forgiveness over hatred and intolerance any day. Yes, the scenes were graphic. But at least the blood was fake, Mr. Name. Unlike the real thing that is rapidly turning Andover’s town centre into a no-go area for people of every and/ or no denomination after 9.00pm most nights.

If so, then why not become a “Householder” for Stonham Supported Lodgings? You can do this on a short or long term basis. For more details ring Penny on 07725 958288 or email:
