Blue Chip Prospects Are Ready to Rock

New Faces at the Helm By Lenore Ringer Prezioso

Blue Restaurant in Blue Point was the site for the Bayport-Blue Point Chamber of Commerce Installation Dinner on June 24th. Over 100 Chamber members, family friends and community members gathered to commemorate the incoming Officers, Board of Directors and President as well as acknowledge the outgoing leaders. The evening began with the presentation of the colors by Chamber Charter Boy Scout Troop 329 and outgoing President Karl Auewater of Bayport Flower Houses, New Chamber President Laura Rogacki welcoming all to the event. (right) and VP John Weissman (left) with Suffolk County Legislator Bill Lindsay All Chamber meetings begin with introductions where each member has the chance to introduce themselves and speak briefly about their business. Blue Point FD Fires Up the Grill Sunshine at the Chicken Barbeque Story and pictures by Danielle Golden Giglio As every hardcore football fan knows, the season kicks off every year as the summer turns into the August homestretch. Training camps open from coast to coast as hardworking players and coaches on every level begin to prepare for the upcoming season. Hope abounds on every gridiron at all of the high school, college, and professional camps. A new season represents a fresh start for everyone. This is where champions are made; this is where the dream begins. However, championships are not only born of dreams but also of hard work and dedication. Good old blood, sweat, and tears. In fact, the 2010 BBPHS Phantoms Varsity Football Team is counting on that very fact. Head Coach Eric Iberger’s Phantoms are hoping to build on last year’s success by fielding a veteran squad with solid players on both sides of the line. As evidence of this, six of Coach Iberger’s top incoming seniors were recently invited to attend the 2010 Blue Chip Prospects High School Football Combine at Half Hollow

The Class of 2010 Makes Their Mark in BBP Bayport-Blue Point High School seniors were celebrated for

their achievements at the Class of 2010 commencement ceremony. Principal Dr. Timothy Hearney began the festive occasion by highlighting the academic accomplishments of the class. Impressive statistics, included that 95% of graduates having received Regents diplomas and 96% of graduates will be attending post-secondary institutions. Distinguished guest United States Senator from New York Charles Schumer encouraged students to step-up and conquer the economic and social challenges of the times by utilizing the skills and talents they have developed throughout their high school careers. Echoing Senator Schumer’s sentiments, Valedictorian Stephanie Tubiolo

There is nothing like a summer evening, enjoying delicious barbeque chicken and having an ice cold drink with friends. All this and more was served to 350 people on Saturday, July 17 at the Blue Point Fire Department’s Annual Chicken Barbeque, held on their grounds. For almost 40 years this event has been a summer tradition in Blue Point. It was originally started as a carnival and turned into a barbeque with chicken and clams. When the price of clams got too expensive, there were replaced by mussels. The barbeque has

Hello, Being a Bayport-Blue Point resident for 13 years, I feel very proud and fortunate that fate has brought me to this community. When the walls come tumbling down around you, you look up to see who’s helping to pick up the pieces. As many have seen on the news or read in the papers, there was a senseless murder/suicide that occured in Bayshore recently that left two girls without their mother. What many do not know, however, is that these girls are now BayportBlue Point residents because of this. I feel fortunate to be their stepmom and blessed that we have had a close relationship almost from day one. If any good can come out of this for the girls, it is the outpouring of concern and help that we have seen from this community from the beginning. From monetary gifts, food trays, countless voice mails and texts to neighbors opening up their homes and bedrooms for out of town guests, I feel blessed to be part of this community. Because this is a local newspaper, I am compelled to personally name our friends in the Bayport-Blue Point area who have helped. Sue Manchester, Mary Balabanik, Kenny Weeks, Maureen Mougious, Cindy and Joe Murphy, Dennis and Tammy Foley, Joanne Noonan and Ruthann Nunziato. There are countless others who have been there for us and thank you is really not enough. This will be a long road to recovery but being surrounded by family, friends and a community that “takes care of their own” is the first step. A million thanks Bayport-Blue Point! Doreen Price

The following was sent to me and after reading it I realized it fi t my theory of living so I thought I’d share it... I’m reading more and dusting less. I’m sitting in the yard and admiring the view without fussing about the weeds in the garden. I’m spending more time with my family and friends and less time working. Whenever possible, life should be a pattern of experiences to savor, not to endure. I’m now trying to recognize these moments and cherish them more. I’m not “saving” anything; I use the good china and crystal for all special events; losing a pound, getting the sink unstopped or the fi rst spring blossom. I wear my best blazer to the market. My theory now, is if I look prosperous, I can shell out $28.49 for one small bag of groceries. I’m not saving my good perfume for special occasions; I’m wearing it for the clerks in the hardware store and the tellers at the bank and most of all “for me”. “Someday” and “one of these days” are losing their grip on my vocabulary. If it’s worth seeing or hearing or doing, I want to see, hear and do it, now. I’m not sure what others would’ve done had they known they wouldn’t be here for the tomorrow that we all take for granted. I think they would have called family members and a few close friends and they also might have called a few former friends to apologize and mend fences for past squabbles. I like to think they would have gone out for a Chinese dinner or for whatever their favorite food was. I’m guessing I’ll never know. It’s those little things left undone that would make me angry if I knew my hours were limited; Angry because I hadn’t written certain letters that I intended to write “one of these days”. Angry and sorry that I didn’t tell my parents, husband or children often enough how much I truly love them. I’m trying very hard not to put off, hold back or save anything that would add laughter and luster to my life. And every morning when I open my eyes, I tell myself its special. Every day, every minute, every breath is truly a gift, so live life to the fullest. “Life may not be the party we hoped for, but while we’re here we might as well dance.” Happy Living!!!!!!!

The One That Didn’t Get Away Bob Fleming

As the school year winds down, fi nal exams are taking place and the thought of beach days are here. When my two boys came home from exams, they asked if I would let them go over to Davis Park with some friends, one on the wave runner and one on the boat. I had just fi nished cleaning the boat for 3 hours in the hot sun and was going to put it back in the water anyway. I look up at the trees and see the leaves barely moving, the bright sun with warm temperatures and I think back to what it was like to be a kid when school was over. “Sure,” I say, “but you have to be back by 6pm because I have somewhere to be tonight.” Big smiles come across their faces, the cell phones go to their ears, the calls are made and the trip is on! A short time later, the boats are launched; I bring the trailer back to its place and head home. About 30 minutes later, my cell phone rings. My fi rst thought is that something has happened, nothing terrible but “something”. My son, Bobby, is calling; “Dad, I’m on the boardwalk at Davis Park over looking the ocean, it’s fl at, calm and there are bunker jumping all over the place. I’m coming back! Meet me at Corey Beach with two poles.” “Ok, but remember you have to be back by 6pm.” “OK, no problem,” he says. Fifteen minutes later, the boat pulls in, the poles get handed off and back to the beach they go, back to catch “the big one”. Once again, I head home. About 40 minutes later, my phone rings again, again, it’s Bobby’s cell phone: “Hello, Mr. Fleming, it’s Jon Jon, Bobby just caught a big fi sh.” My fi rst thoughts are about what a jokester Jon Jon is and how Bobby is even worse. “Yeah, sure, Jon Jon, you’re kidding me….”No, really, he did!” “Ok, take a picture and send it to me.” “OK, you got it”. As I sit there waiting, I start to think, “Did he really catch something or is he just pulling my leg? How big a fi sh does Jon Jon consider big? Maybe he did catch a 20 pound fi sh, good for him!” He puts in a lot of time and loves to fi sh. Ten minutes go by with no picture. The cell phone rings: it’s Bobby’s phone once again. I hear a lot of noise and Bobby is very excited, “Dad, I caught a big fi sh. I have never seen a fi sh this big out of the water; bring a cooler with ice and meet me at the dock!” “OK,” I said; “I hope you’re telling me the truth!” So, back in the truck I go with the largest cooler I have and go off to get some ice. As I get to the dock, I think of how proud and interested my Dad was every time I came back with a fi sh and a story. Since he passed away, he is not there to share my fi sh stories with. Now I am the one who looks forward to sharing fi sh stories with my son. The next best thing to my father is my mother, so I pick up my cell phone and called my Mom, just in case this really was a good fi sh. I tell her the story; she was almost as excited as I was about seeing this fi sh. She drops everything, jumps in the car and comes right down. There I am: waiting and wondering. I call my wife at work to tell her what is going on. “Oh my god” she says, “Do you think he really caught a big fi sh?” “I don’t know, but I will let you know in a few minutes.” As the boat turns the corner into the marina and slows down, there is my son with a huge smile on his face and dancing to the music. It is at this very moment that I think to myself, “Yup, he got it. A big fi sh!” As the boat pulls up next to the dock, not even stopped, he is racing to the side to pick up his monster of a fi sh. He told me he had never seen a fi sh this big: Well, I had never seen a fi sh this big!! It had a nice fat belly and an enormous head. Bobby held it up to his chest and the tail just touched the deck of the boat. He was not kidding me…. this was a big one! As I looked at the fi sh I thought: “Yup, defi nitely a 40 plus pound fi sh”, not realizing how big this fi sh actually was. His friend, Jesse Vardaro, was also fi shing with him and caught a very nice fi sh, not as big as Bobby’s, but, a nice fi sh none the less. Bobby looked at me and said “Who needs school when you can fi sh?” I told them to go dock the boat and that we would bring the fi sh to J&J Tackle Store in Patchogue for the offi cial weigh-in. I called my wife and confi rmed the catch and asked her to meet us at the boat. A short time later, she showed up and was ecstatic at his accomplishment! We took a bunch of pictures and, again, listened to the story of how he landed this monster. The offi cial weight was 50 lbs on the nose and 56” long. Jesse’s fi sh was a respectable 20 lbs and 36”. Days later, phone calls have been made, many people have been told and Facebook pictures have been posted bragging of the fi sh. In case you’re not really into fi shing, a fi sh of this size and weight is something that people fi sh for their whole lives and might never catch. At 15 years old, to me, this is quite an accomplishment. I was taught how to fi sh by my Father and now I have taught my son how to fi sh, and I feel a great sense of pride! My only regret is that I was not there to watch him catch it, but I know my Father was next to him the entire time making sure this was not “the one that got away”. The three minute video that my younger son taped of Bobby landing the fi sh is almost as good! I told Bobby, “remember this day like it was yesterday because this day might only come once in your life!” I hope you catch a bigger fi sh one day! Great job son, we love you!!!

towards high school by participating in the school’s eighth-grade moving-up ceremony. Principal Susan Haske welcomed the eighth-grade class and thanked the community, Board of Education and district for their support in the class’s education and school activities. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Anthony Annunziato shared sentiments of congratulations and an inspirational message of good luck that encouraged student to actively participate in the diverse courses, clubs and activities the high school provides. Graduating students captured moments in time, speaking on the past, present and future of the class, reflecting on what has been, where they are now, and looking towards the future. Foreign Language teacher and Bayport-Blue Point graduate Keith Scharfschwerdt gave the farewell address, illustrating his memories as a student in the district. He reminded the class to take advantage of all the opportunities presented to them. The chorus showcased their talents, performing “Like an Eagle,” an inspirational song about independence and the unknown, before class advisors Deborah Lena and Colleen MacDonell awarded students with their certificates.

The Bayport-Blue Point James Wilson Young Middle School eighth-grade chorus performed a musical selection at their moving-up ceremony.

SPORTS BEAT Bob Falkenburgh from page 1 Hills West HS in Dix Hills. Gary Farley, Shane Young, Joe Emmel, Corey Picone, Jack Sheehan, and Ian Bateman represented BBPHS in an exclusive group of top HS football players from Suffolk County. The highest scoring 80 performers from that group qualified to be sent to the NY State Football Classic Elite Combine in Syracuse as part of the finest 250 players in the state, and the BBP community was well served by our boys as they all made the final cut. “To be part of a big time combine was exciting” said hard hitting Linebacker Joe Emmel. “It was a really nice honor”. All of the Phantoms participants are interested in continuing their football careers in college and this was terrific exposure for them as the combine results will be viewed by college coaches looking to recruit the areas top rated talent. “It was a great experience; I hope that this will help me to play football in college” said Shane Young. “I definitely want to play in college and this was agood step toward that” added Joe. Each of the players were tested in six components: 40 yard dash, short shuttle run, 3 cone drill, standing broad jump, vertical jump, and the 185 lb. bench press in addition to some rigorous position specific drills as well. “It was awesome! The field, the lights, the big stands…!” exclaimed 2009 All County Tight End Gary Farley. “I’ll use the stats from the combine to pass along to colleges that I might attend” he said. Jack Sheehan was proud of how he and his fellow Phantoms performed under the bright lights and big time scrutiny: “It was a good experience; it really helped our confidence because we all did so well against the other top players in the state” said the bruising tailback. “I think that we all held our ground against some really good players” said Shane. “I think that we all did well” he concluded. After the Syracuse combine all of the boys and their families were invited to attend the Upstate / Downstate Football Classic Game in the Carrier Dome at Syracuse University. The 250 participants that competed in the combine were introduced at halftime as the future of NY State football. “This was a great honor and something that these boys and the school’s football program should be very proud of!” said Jane Emmel, Joe’s mom. Each of the boys agreed that this experience combined with their strenuous off season work outs will pay off handsomely for the 2010 campaign. “We expect to have a really good year!” exclaimed young Mr. Emmel. “We are the number one seed in our league; I think that we have a very good team” said Shane, echoing his teammates sentiments. “Our offensive line will be very good; I don’t think that anyone will be able to stop our running game” stated Gary. “With almost everyone returning this year, I know that we’ll do well” “I don’t expect to lose a game” said Jack as he cranked up the confidence meter to the extreme. “We’re returning all of our starters, and we’re bigger, stronger, and faster than ever. We just won’t accept losing!” The Phantoms players, coaches, and fans can only hope that the success of these six key contributors will continue right through the regular season, into the playoffs, and culminate in a Suffolk County Championship (and beyond?). As noted earlier, with every new season comes renewed hope, spirit, and exuberance. What’s better than that? Let the games begin! GO PHANTOMS! Special thanks to Jane Emmel and John Young for helping me with this article. Thanks for reading! rfalken@optonline.net.

The Class of 2010 from page 1

Photos provided by Marissa Sanseverino/Syntaxa

described the unique talents and personalities of the class, along with their positive contributions to the school and community. Salutatorian Brendan Lenz entertained classmates and community members, utilizing a rap performance to recount the many different events and activities students had experienced. Academic achievement was also recognized as select students received Honor Medallions for achieving a 90% or above unweighted average, while other students signifi ed their membership in the National Honor Society by wearing NHS patches on their robes. The musical talents of the high school were also on display as the High School Band and Orchestra performed ceremonial musical selections as well as instrumental samples from “Queen in Concert.” The Senior Chorus also sang an inspirational rendition of “Time of Your Life.” Prior to certifying the class, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Anthony Annunziato illustrated the role of a true hero as someone who completes simple tasks such as being kind, compassionate and giving to others and aids in the advancement of society. Board of Education members then presented students with their diplomas as Senior Class co-advisors Melissa Schwimmer and Celeste Devaney announced each graduate.

Yard Sale!!

Who can resist a good yard sale? I know I can’t. The most highly creative Interior Designers have this habit. If you are against “garbage picking” or don’t care for used items than think of it as recycling. The old adage “one person’s trash is another person’s treasure” works for me! A fl ea market or yard sale is a place where you can truly indulge yourself. After all, there is no sales tax and everything is inexpensive and negotiable! Most of all it’s fun! Here are some tips for the green shopper. Stop at every sale. Don’t do the slow down and pass judgement whether or not the sale is worth getting out of the car. Not every yard sale host/ hostess is going to display their merchandise on tables neatly arranged. Organizing a sale is hard work. Many people put out boxes, bins or lay blankets on the lawn. It’s easy and quicker. That doesn’t mean you won’t fi nd good stuff! So don’t be a yard sale snob. Those boxes may be chock full of yesteryears household.

Take your time when arriving. If you are not sure if you want something, pick it up anyway. You can always put it back. Yard sale shopping is an excellent way to add whimsy to your home. Look for little surprises such as interesting vases, birdhouses, antique purses, lunch boxes and unusual art. Sometimes the perfect match is a perfectly unmatched décor. Books are always a good fi nd. You can display them mixing old with new or fi nd that unique cocktail table book. Mix and match chinaware can create an out of the ordinary look. Tea cups, sauces and plates are easy to come by. Milk Glass items blend well as salt and pepper shakers, pitchers and candlesticks with most china patterns. If you are not an expert collector, try not to be hung up on names, stamps and labels. Not everything old is valuable. If you see an item you admire but don’t really need , fi nd a new use for it. If you are not confi dent in your taste then stick to your color scheme. This will prevent you from buying a lot of useless items and creating a hodgepodge design. Investigate the furniture. If you come across an antique cabinet that you just love but it’s not the bargain you had hoped for, go ahead and splurge. You will have it forever. Furniture that is chipped or rusted can make a wonderful accent piece. Lastly, always bargain. Most people will sell something for less than the asking price just to move the merchandise. So, make yard sale hunting part of your weekend routine. You’ll be surprised at what you fi nd!

Rita’s Real Foods

A Real Welcome

Miariah Galgano At the very end of June, Rita Palmer opened Rita’s Real Foods on Middle Road in Bayport. This small-town, country-feel food market is chock full of farm fresh organic produce and groceries and all Rita’s fruits and vegetables are locally grown. You’ll find blueberries, corn on the cob, peaches, tomatoes and assorted greens and she carries some specialty items including honey, pickles, spices and jams… and Ice Cream. If you visit Rita’s Real Foods on Saturday morning, you will find milk in glass bottles, and cheeses and eggs delivered directly from Amish farms in Pennsylvania and …Ice Cream. Stop in and ask for dates and times as well as joining the “weekly harvest” where you can receive seasonal fruits and vegetables all year round!

Photos Mariah Galgano

On July 29th, the community welcomed Rita with a celebratory ribbon cutting for the official Grand Opening. Assemblywoman Ginny Fields, Legislator Bill Lindsay, and Islip Town Councilwomen Trish Bergin Weichbrodt joined members of the Bayport-Blue Point Chamber of Commerce and Bob Draffin, President of the Bayport Civic Association to wish Rita good luck . Stop in to Rita’s and pick up some freshly baked bread, organic butter or even a Long Island Duck for dinner!!!! Real Food for real people.

Local Kids Awarded for Volunteering Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center has awarded three local high school

The

seniors the Auxiliary to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Volunteer Scholarships to continue their education. The scholarships were awarded to the volunteers who completed their senior year of high school and volunteered at the Medical Center a minimum of 100 hours. To qualify, the recipients had to be an active volunteer for at least a year, be in good academic standing in their high school and through their volunteer activities, demonstrate the Medical Center’s core values: quality, compassion, integrity, dignity and responsibility/accountability. In June, the awards were presented to three young ladies who exemplify the Brookhaven Volunteer. Cristina Iorizzo, a senior from Connetquot High School who began volunteering at Brookhaven in February 2009, and has dedicated more than 250 hours to the Medical Center. Molly McVeigh, a graduate of Bayport-Blue Point High School, who began her volunteer career here in February 2007, and has dedicated more than 300 hours of her free time, and Kaitlin Sheehan, also a graduate from Bayport-Blue Point, who began in July 2007 and has volunteered more than 260 hours. “Our volunteers are the spirit of Brookhaven. They choose to spend their time here assisting in providing our patients and their families with a comforting environment while they receive medical attention” stated Thomas Ockers, President and CEO of the Medical Center “and Brookhaven’s youth volunteers are truly our future.”

Beyond the Blue Verizon Waits a Beautiful Day...

Rob Carlota from Suffolk County Legislator Jack Eddington’s office said, “The Legislator is sorry he couldn’t be here tonight but sends his regards to outgoing President Karl Auwaerter. During his presidency he was instrumental in getting many community projects off the ground. As a family business owner of the Bayport Flower Houses he has generously donated to numerous community beautification projects like Bryan Anderson Park and Chamber Park. I understand he was also instrumental in bringing the very successful Duathlon (The BooDu) to the list of annual chamber events. On behalf of Legislator Eddington, thank you for all you have done.” Another tradition of the Installation dinner is the presentation of the Chamber Scholarship. It is awarded to a Bayport-Blue Point High School Senior who embodies community service and the goal of attending college or trade school. Karl made the presentation, “This year we had a very difficult task of choosing between two very qualified young men and we couldn’t pick one or the other so we choose both, Tanner Gonzalez and Vince Licata. Tanner will soon attain his Eagle honor and Vince was recently awarded his Eagle honor for his restoration of Chamber Park in Bayport at the end of Nichols Road. As Karl awarded the 2009-2010 Officers and Board of Directors with certificates of appreciation he commented, “This group is a conduit for idea’s; we bounce ideas off of one another and act like a gigantic brain when we’re together. We have also enjoyed many successful endeavors to benefit the community that include beautification, grants, the Menorah and Tree lighting, the Easter Egg Hunt and the BooDu Duathlon. Looking forward to the coming year we will be having our Sunset Cruise in August and BiAnnual Community Expo in October”. Skip pope of Packey Electronics was charged with the honor of presenting some gifts of appreciation and said, “Karl managed every minute of his Presidency and without his guidance and leadership we wouldn’t have been as successful as we were.” Since tradition dictates that outgoing Presidents receive accolades for their accomplishments it is also tradition that it comes sprinkled with a heap of good natured ribbing. Carol Peper-Goldsmith I am sitting in the parking lot at King Kullen, by myself. It is hot. I have brought along a little plastic case that contains a new – cell phone. No one can see what it is I have in hand. And if they did, they would surely think I was texting which is a laugh because I don’t even know how to make a telephone call. Or answer a call, if the cell phone rings. If the cell phone rings, I will shove it deep into my pocketbook so no one can hear it and wonder why I am not answering it. I am not answering it because I don’t know how to do that function. Twice I have brought this new cell phone back to the place where I bought it, intending to return it because it does way more than I want. I just want the phone to make a call. And to receive a call. In fact, I would enjoy it if when I turned it on a voice said “Number please?” And I would say my friends number or my son’s or it called home for me. When I brought this thing (I refer to it as “this thing” because in my mind that is what it is – “the thing”) back intending to return it, the eleven-yearold-child who had explained to me how it worked said – and I quote – “You really should try to learn how to use it because things are only going to get more complicated in the future. This one has 40,000 apps” (I have learned that is short for applications). “The next model will have even more.” Well Oh Honey – Give me a break! Truth is, this whole thing is all about money. Given a chance to “update” our phones, we bought these with a “plan” that offered a $100.00 rebate for each phone. So the cost would be about 38 bucks for the phone itself. So we bought the phones along with the plan. 0Now comes the good part: The salesperson prints up the receipt for the phones along with the receipt proof of purchase and instructions for the mailin rebate. This receipt is three and a half feet long. (I measured it when I got home from the store.) In small print are the words instructing what to do next. The words are really not English as I know it. For instance: * UPC and ESN or MEID label is required and if the UPC and ESN or MEID label is not present the amount of the refund will be reduced by the amount of the mail in rebate… which is equal to the sum of the two adjoining sides! Well, we’ll soon see about that!

Rockin’ Robin Fitness Forum By Robin DeNicola

Are you getting the most out of your life?

If you are not dieting and eating well, the answer is probably no! Our bodies love exercise and when we exercise, our bodies treat us better. I can’t tell you how many times I have had clients come for their workouts feeling tired, stressed, or maybe they had a headache. 90% of the time they will leave feeling better then when they arrived. They are usually so pleased that they pushed themselves to work out. Exercise is great for your body, great for your mind and great for you health.

Long Island Brass Guild Music by the Gazebo

Bayport Heritage Association sponsored a concert by the Long Island Brass Guild on July 22nd at the Bayport Memorial Park on Middle Road. With their mixture of jazz, pop and rock, they kept the crowd tapping their feet and clapping their hands while the weather kept everyone sunny and smiling. Watch for this event next year.....it’s free and it’s fun. Pictures by Nikita Dorcinvil

Exercise makes simple things in life a little easier such as walking up and down the stairs, getting out of a chair, getting on and off the floor to play with little ones. Our bodies need exercise if we want to get the most out of our bodies. After a short time of exercising you will see a difference in everyday activities. I see it all the time and it doesn’t take long. You will be amazed at what you are capable of. I have a neighbor who used to tell me she couldn’t run at all. I told her to start by running to the next mailbox and it would get easier.. This weekend she just ran her first 5k and in a couple of weeks she will be running another 5k. Maybe running a 5k will never be for you, but I’m positive being more fit is for you!!! You really can do this!! Our bodies also need nutrition, not just food but nutrition. The definition of nutrition is the act or process of nourishing or of being nourished. Many of health problems we suffer from can be prevented with a diet filled with nutrients. Our bodies need fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts and seeds and protein. Everything else you eat is just to satisfy your cravings, it doesn’t satisfy the need of your body so it can function at it’s best for you! How many times have you eaten junk and felt horrible after? How many times have you eaten vegetables and felt horrible after??? When you take care of your body, your body will take care of you the best it can. When you are healthy, everything in life is a just better. Add some exercise to your day, and some real nutrients and start getting the most out of your life!!!

Bayport-Blue Point More about STREET NAMES in Bayport…. by Gene Horton genehblupt@aol.com

Researching more Bayport and Blue Point street names, I ran across an interesting newspaper article from the SUFFOLK COUNTY NEWS dated March 1, 1890 about more Bayport street names (parenthesis below are mine): “Some 25 years ago (c. 1865) Capt. S. C. Seaman opened through his farm at his own expense, the first public road to the bay. Last year, his son, Lieut. S.C. Seaman and John R. Suydam had one more laid out, now called Bay Avenue, with a nice row of Maples on each side the entire length of the avenue. The Messrs. Gillette also opened one from the North Country Road (Montauk Flagpole at Bayport’s Memorial Park Highway) to the shore, planting the same and gave it to the public. Capt. Snedicor is doing the same, and contemplates setting out trees in the Spring. This is what we call public spirited men, and it would be in the interest of the owners of property, on the so-called McConnell Avenue, to go and do likewise, it would improve your property ten fold. No doubt Capt. George Myers selected a lot on Seamans’ Avenue, because it was an avenue well laid out. To this day, Gillette Ave. is the only roadway in Bayport from which you can see the Great South Bay from the Montauk Highway.

Addendum One: As a follow-up to a History Page column I wrote in the B-BP GAZETTE in Feb., 2009: Regarding the tall flagpole in Bayport’s MEMORIAL PARK, I think I found a bit more about its history thanks to an article in SUFFOLK COUNTY NEWS of September, 1973: “A large Bayport flagpole, which once was the mast of Thomas Lipton’s ‘Shamrock IV,’ a former contender in the America’s Cup Race, was to be lowered and transferred to Bayport land, which was to house an Islip Town Park. The mast was placed on its former site in the early 1900’s and became a landmark and navigational aid to sailors on the Great South Bay. That’s the flag pole I think was moved from the former Todd Estate onto Bayport’s Memorial Park. Addendum Two: Regarding last month’s local History column about ‘Street Names in Blue Point:” Nelson Danes isn’t the only one for whom two streets in Blue Point are named. There are also two streets in Blue Point named for Humphrey Avery who in the mid-18th Century owned much of what is Blue Point today. Humphrey Lane and Avery Court, two of the smallest streets in Blue Point (off Namkee Road) are named in his honor today. Street names and local history: Sooooo interesting!

“Islip 2010” Citizens’ Steering Committee

Supervisor Phil Nolan has named 17 active members of the community to serve on the Town’s Citizens’ Steering Committee. The committee is charged with conducting a comprehensive review of Town-owned infrastructure, including parks, roads, and municipal facilities, as part of the Islip 2010 project. The Town’s Islip 2010 project will focus on developing a manageable multi-year capital improvement program to guide Town lawmakers in prioritizing the needed improvements to Islip’s infrastructure. Co-chaired by businessman Gerry Pallotta of West Islip and community activist Nancy Manfredonia of Central Islip, the committee will work with the Town’s Departments of Parks, Planning and Public Works to identify and evaluate the physical condition of Islip’s 104 parks, 1,500 miles of streets and other Town-owned infrastructure. Former Town Supervisor Michael LoGrande will serve ex officio on the committee, as well. The other members of the committee include: Bill Norris, of Norris Food Services; Fred Romito, of the East Islip Lumber Co.; John Corrado, of Suffolk Transportation; Vince Trapani, of USA Industries; Pamela Raymond, of the Sayville Inn; Rafael Orozco, Central Islip School District Board Member; Alonzo Jacobs, an East Islip-based attorney; Bob Draffin, President of the Bayport Civic Association; Miriam Flynn, Principal of East Islip High School; Kevin Guilfoyle, Vice President of the Holbrook Chamber of Commerce; Mary Louise Cohen, Bay Shore School District Board Trustee; Fran Mattace, of the West Islip Chamber of Commerce; Gerald Curtin, of Statewide Roofing; Michael Milazzo, of the Brentwood Summit Council; and Gene McGowan, retired Battalion Commander, NYFD. The committee will meet several times throughout the summer, and has scheduled the first meeting for Tuesday, July 27th, at 5 p.m. in the Economic Development office, located at 40 Nassau Avenue, Islip. “The members of this committee have been selected because they are leaders in their community who are familiar with the needs of Islip residents,” stated Supervisor Nolan. “I am confident that this group is well-equipped to advise the Town on how to best address the state of Islip’s infrastructure.” The committee members will issue a report on their findings in September.

BP FD Chicken BBQ from page 1

Tickets for the barbeque were sold in advance at a discount price and included one child’s ticket. On the night of the event, full price admissions were selling out quickly at the door. All of the funds raised from ticket sales and raffles goes right back into the community to help organizations that the fire house supports. George Larson, member of the Blue Point Fire Department and long time chairman of the chicken feast said, “This barbeque is such a success because of the hard work of the fire department members and the many local businesses that sponsor it.” Three months of planning goes into this event with everyone at the fire house helping. To feed the 300 plus hungry people, the fire department served 400 half chickens that were grilled on 300 pounds of charcoal. The chickens were cooked to perfection, but the men working the grill would not divulge their secret recipe for the sauce. Next on the menu was 300 pounds of steamed mussels, served with cocktail sauce and drawn butter. They also boiled 500 ears of corn and made 30 gallons of delectable calm chowder. The kids dinned on hot dogs and macaroni and cheese. For dessert there was watermelon and cake. It was all washed down with soda, beer and wine. There was plenty to keep the kids occupied at the barbeque. As soon as they walked in they received a goodie bag with toys and sidewalk chalk, that they used on the driveway. Children could test out their pitching arm at the dunk tank, where members of the junior fire department volunteered to make a splash. All the kids really enjoyed spraying the fire hose that was set up to put out fake fires on a wooden house. Besides all the tasty food, the adults got to enjoy games of chance, a raffle for a flat screen television and a 50/50 raffle. There was a DJ and Joe Allegue donated his time to play his acoustic music. Joe’s son Cory is a member of the Blue Point Fire Department and also sings with him. Playing at this event for the first time he said, “The fire fighters give up so much to help the community, it is easy for me to give back and donate my time.” The barbeque ended at 11pm with full bellies and tired feet from dancing to the music. Everyone should make plans to attend this classic summertime event next year.

Shining Memorials

The Bayport Fire Department has recently added 2 lamp posts on the front corners of the firehouse property. These lamp posts are dedicated to 2 of Bayport FD members who gave the ultimate sacrifice, FF James “Scotty” Farrell and Honorary member Lt. Glenn Wilkenson. On March 21, 1991 Scotty Farrell, while operating at the scene of a confirmed house fire, suffered a heart attack and died. Lt Glenn Wilkenson, a member of the FDNY Eng Co. 238, had been a member of our community and, while in the process of being accepted as a member of the Bayport Fire Department, died while operating at the World Trade Center Attacks on September 11, 2001. The streets have previously been dedicated to these brave men. This project has enhanced the dedication and ensured that their names will visible. The Bayport Fire Department was able to raise the money for this project from their 1st Annual 5k Run which was hosted last September and had approximately 200 runners. This year’s run is scheduled for September 18th and are hopeful to have more of the community participation. The entire project was completed by the volunteers of the Bayport Fire Department. The owner of All County Block, a Bayport resident, donated the concrete and other materials that were needed to secure the lamps. It was a community project from start to finish. The chief of the Bayport Fire Department, Glen Baillargeon said “The entire project from the 5k Run to mounting the street signs was a complete team effort from the membership and the community. Scotty and Glenn will never be forgotten.”
