The fight for the coveted gay dollar is heating up in the banking sector, with Westpac this month announcing the findings of the survey it commissioned into GLBT inclusivity in the workplace. The ‘Westpac Rainbow Acceptance Monitor’ found that while the majority of New Zealanders say they are accepting of the GLBT community that does not extend to the workplace. Meanwhile, ANZ are set to reveal a ‘GAYTM’ on Ponsonby Road for Auckland Pride, similar to the ones commissioned for last year’s Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras. express understands that ANZ is also set to join ASB and Westpac in becoming the third bank to become Rainbow Tick certified.

Mr Gay NZ Sought Current Mr Gay NZ Troy Williams says as organisers did not have time to host an event for 2015 to find his successor, anyone who would like to represent ‘gay New Zealand’ can just nominate themselves. The winner will be decided by a small committee.

Chair of the GABA Charitable Trust, Gresham Bradley spoke to express about the importance of the trust saying that without the money from GABA, many community groups would not be able to participate in ether the parade or hold festival events. In addition to the parade and festival grants, GABA also award a number of community grants. The 2015 Community Grants application form is currently available to download from www.gaba.org. nz, with the closing date for applications 16th March.

Body Positive Receive Big Funding Increase Body Positive has received an increase in funding of 50% from the Ministry of Health. In recognition of Body Positive’s hard work and dedication to serving those living with HIV/AIDS, the organisation has received a 50% funding increase from the Ministry of Health. This only takes the total of state funding for Body Positive to $150,000 with the remainder of the yearly $600,000 intake made up from charitable organisations and private donations. Speaking to express, Body Positive CEO Mark Fisher says that the funding increase, “means we can do more of our work. We don’t get a lot of money from the government, so this is recognition that they value our work.” Fisher says that Body Positive last year ran at a loss and he acknowledges that there are some difficulties managing such a small budget and that more funding is always needed.

Barack Obama Makes History in State of The Union Speech US President Barack Obama has made an historic mention of GLBT rights in his 2015 state of the union speech. Obama become the first ever US President to mention the GLBT community in a state of the union address. Just days after the United States Supreme court said it would take up the issue of marriage equality, the President called same sex marriage a “civil right.” “As Americans, we respect human dignity, even when we’re threatened, which is why I’ve prohibited torture, and worked to make sure our use of new technology like drones is properly constrained,” said Obama, adding, “That’s why we defend free speech, and advocate for political prisoners, and condemn the persecution of women, or religious minorities, or people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender. We do these things not only because they’re right, but because they make us safer.”

US Supreme Court to Decide on Marriage Equality The fate of marriage equality across the United States could be decided by June this year after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that it will hear a series of marriage equality cases this term. The cases ask the justices whether the state bans on same-sex couples’ marriages and bans on recognition of same-sex couples’ marriages from out of state violate the Constitution’s due process and equal protection guarantees.

Israeli Embassy Float Not Returning For 2015 Pride It has now been confirmed by the Auckland Pride parade organiser that the controversial Israeli embassy float will not return for 2015’s parade. Auckland Pride parade organiser Richard TakI has told express that “we did not receive an application from them.” after the passing of this year’s deadline. The 2014 Israeli Embassy entry drew criticism last year from a number of activists, with the float being temporarily halted by protestors from the group ‘Queers Against Israeli Apartheid.’

Rufus’ Rollercoaster Life! For the first time in seven years Rufus Wainwright will return to NZ for Womad festival. To promote his appearance he scheduled, then no-showed two interviews with express and has promised a third after we go to print and will be published on www.gayexpress. co.nz. Oliver Hall looks back over his lively career. Like many great musicians Rufus Wainwright’s personal life is as interesting as his professional music. The son of folk singers Kate McGarrigle and Loudon Wainwright, he was playing piano by the age of six and started touring with the family band at the age of 13. By 14 Wainwright had realized he was gay. On a trip to London, he snuck into a bar and was picked up. Like many victims he initially denied being raped, but by the early 2000’s openly talked about the assault in interviews, stating: "I thought it was going to be a romantic walk, but he raped me and robbed me afterwards... AIDS was at its height and you were told that this kind of contact could kill you. So I was just put off sex. I didn't sleep with anyone again until I was 21. It took that long to recover." In 1998, Rufus delivered his self-titled debut album to critical acclaim and was awarded Best New Artist by Rolling Stone. While recording and promoting his second album Poses, Wainwright fell into a tail-spin of crystal meth addiction. Things got so bad he has claimed he temporarily lost his vision and barely even remembers his cameo on

Absolutely Fabulous. Rehab and recording the therapeutic Want albums brought him back from the depths. He followed with his most successful album Release The Stars and toured internationally including NZ. Exploring his diversity he performed a series of concerts dedicated to Judy Garland’s Carnegie Hall album (earning him a Grammy nomination) and composed his first Opera: Prima Donna. In 2010, he got engaged to partner (German art administrator) Jorn Weisbrodt. Had a baby girl with Leonard Cohen’s daughter Lorca a year later and married Jorn in 2012. “I wasn’t a huge gay marriage supporter before I met Jorn because I love the whole old-school promiscuous Oscar Wilde freak show of what ‘being gay’ once was. But since meeting Jorn that all changed,” he stated. Next month the man that Elton John has labeled, ‘the best songwriter around’ will return to our shores at Womad to perform a Greatest Hits set list. The pain and joy of his rollercoaster life

• Sorry Boys! Blake’s Getting Married • In an express exclusive, our favourite Olympian spills all, on love at first ‘Instagram’ sight and their plans for the big day! Now based in New York, Blake Skjellerup returned to Christchurch over the festive season to introduce his fiancé Saul Carrasco to his family and home country for the first time. The two have enjoyed a whirlwind romance since meeting face to face in New York in January last year. “We had met online four months before that, through Instagram,” chuckles Blake who explains, he was in New York shooting the documentary To Russia With Love, about gay Olympians who were affected by the Sochi Winter Olympics. For their first date Saul took Blake to the restaurant Cafeteria, made famous by Sex & The City and introduced him to his now favourite dish Chicken and Waffles. Blake says they “had a good connection,” and that he immediately knew Saul was the one. The following month Blake found out he had missed out on qualifying for the Olympics by just one place and decided to leave his Calgarybased training camp and move to New York to be with Saul. He denies that the anti-gay Russian propaganda

tarnished his Olympic training, stating, “It was more of a motivation than a distraction… I hope this documentary puts the focus back on the lives of GLBT Russians. Since the Olympics finished it feels like a lot of people have forgotten about them.” Blake says his Olympic dream is ‘most likely’ over. The funding support he receives as a speed skater only covers about a twentieth of what it costs him to train overseas, as expert training does not exist here. As for what he’ll do instead, he tells us, “When I figure out what it is I want to put my focus and energy into – I’ll be excited.” For now he has the wedding to focus on, and reveals they will marry in Hawaii. “My one stipulation is if it’s not on a beach, then it needs to be very near one. I want to be close to the Ocean.” The happy couple have now returned to New York. But, Blake confides, “part of the reason for this holiday [back to NZ] was so Saul can see how awesome it is to live over here!” Article | Oliver Hall. Oliver Hall sat down with the Foundation’s Franchise and self-styled ‘lifestyle Liberationist’, the one and only Mike about shows at sea, mystery bus tours and taking his art to Texas! For those who missed it the first time, next month Mika is bring you the chance to see his multi-award winning, 5 star Edinburgh Fringe cabaret show Salon Mika in a truly unique environment. As part of the Volvo Ocean Race, from Sunday 1- Sunday 8 March, parties of up to twenty people can book out, a

two hour cruise on a Dreamboat yacht where they will be treated to a very intimate performance of the show. Mika describes Salon Mika as a montage of stories from people’s lives, told through sexuality, culture and song. He is also excited to premiere the show’s sequel Room 1334 at this year’s Pride, as a one night only event on Valentines Day. Conceptualised as an arc of the Salon story, the name Room 1334 refers to a room within the Salon, and Mika describes the show as: darker, assertoric and art house. For Valentines evening event, Mika says the audience will experience, “a different kind of love,” telling us to expect short dark pieces of

sensual cabaret. All audience members will be given tickets to an exclusive ‘street party’ that will feature underground DJs and burlesque performances, before being given the option of taking a mystery bus ride to an additional secret after party. We’re intrigued to say the least! Following Pride, Mika will be preparing to perform selected songs from the two shows against a background of short films (created by US-based Australian filmmaker Daniel Luke Rogers) in his debut at Austin, Texas’ infamous SXSW

If you’re looking for big names, Michael Lett has them, but that’s not the only reason this will be one of the best exhibitions on offer this Pride. Implicated and Immune is the partial reprisal of the 1992 exhibition of the same name, the very first in Auckland to specifically show artists responses to the HIV/AIDS epidemic. In this reimagining of the show, original artists such as Fiona Clark and Richard Kileen will be shown alongside new works by contemporary practitioners Imogen Taylor and Simon Denny. On the moment of change there is always a new threshold of Imagination Artspace (until 28 February) International artists Fancy Violence (Brazil) and Nilbar Gures (Turkey) will be in residence at Artspace, where they will exhibit and perform

Eshraghi’s practise draws on traditional artistic practices from both Samoa and the Middle East.

Jack Body’s Men and Other Matters will show four series of his sensual photographic works from the 1980s, including Intimate Portraits and The Male Nude. Moving from scandalous to serendipitous, Gareth Watkin’s photographic exhibition Composed in Light is a series of portraits of established and promising New Zealand composers. In a picture-perfect example of how we Kiwis really do live in one anothers pockets, Jack Body has posed as the subject for one of the works. Oliver Hall probes three of our favourite optical style experts to get their top tips on the latest trends. “When Tom Ford relaunched his eyewear it changed everything!” Working Style’s Creative Director Eddie von Dadelszen, who have just launched their own range of sunglasses, tells us. “He made eyewear a truly desired item. You wanted to start wearing reading glasses even if you didn’t need them.” Ford’s 2006 launch brought heavier square styles into vogue, a trend that made such an impact it has only recently begun to dissipate. “We’re moving on from bigger, squarer looks and going back to more oval and circular styles.” Says Renata Watene director of Ponsonby Road optometrist Occhiali. “A lot of designers have been playing with Tortoiseshell patterns, and the winged cat-eye look has become a popular shape,” she says of Summer 2015’s collections. She says French brand Anne et Valentin have been flying out of Occhiali’s doors this season, simply because, “They’re unique!” Listing distinct patterns and colour-clashing as a signature that has made their designs stand out.

Business Partner at long standing optometrist Mortimer Hirst, Alex Bechino says that this summer has proved that vintage and retro eyewear is back into popularity. He points to some of the most popular brands that Mortimer Hirst distribute such as Oliver People’s Vintage and Dita and Thom Browne who have both released retro inspired pieces influenced by original models from the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s such as the round eye, cats eye and the aviator. But notes that it is the exceptional quality of the glasses that keeps their costumers buying more. The choice New Zealanders now have when purchasing eyewear means consumers are spoilt for choice. “For a very long time New Zealand had a conservative range of spectacles – now we have had an explosion of a variety of colours, and shapes which years ago you only expected to find in

Europe,” Occhiali’s Watene tells us. Bechino says this has lead consumers to, “become more adventurous [with their choices] and have more than one pair [of glasses] to suit their wardrobe.”

Watene feels confidence is key. “A lot of people presume they won’t look good in certain styles, but so many frames look completely different when you put them on. Always have the confidence to try them!”

But greater choice doesn’t necessarily make finding the right pair easy. “One of the only things I won’t buy online is sun glasses because you need to try them on.” Says Working Style’s Dadelszen. “A lot of people wear frames that are too dark for their complexion, and the weight is also important, is you have fine features, tortoise shell can look great, heavier frames work if you have strong features.”

Dadelszen says eyewear will remain our most important accessory for many years to come, in part because they provide a gateway into luxury brands. “Most people can’t afford to spend $20,000 on a Channel coat, but their sunglasses give consumers an affordable opportunity to be touch the brand.”

Bechino agrees that finding the perfect frames means, “ensuring they compliment your hair and skin tone and most importantly represents your personality.”

The Artist Inside the Art In 2009, a year before Humans of New York (HONY) exploded and made street photography the hottest thing out, Auckland-based artist Paul Stevens was attempting to photograph strangers on our streets.

“I wasn’t internet-focussed (unlike HONY), I just wanted to capture a whole range of different people, but often they were rude or didn’t want to be photographed. People felt invaded so I had to rethink.” That rethink led Stevens to cast himself in the role of the stranger and create a series of sixteen self-portraits exploring the fluidity of identity. Much like American artist Cindy Sherman, whose performative self-portraits have been shattering cliches since the 70s, Stevens has the luck of possessing a relatively generic face, the kind that can become someone else quite easily. “Stranger references that vernacular of people being photographed and saying oh, that’s not really me, that’s not how I see myself, or just hating having their picture taken.” But for Stevens, the experience is the opposite: his picture is being taken over and over and yet none of the pictures are really of him.

I am struck by the subtle authenticity of the characters Stevens portrays. They are not cliches or caricatures, and their expressions feel real: they are self-conscious, impatient, humble, awkward. You can tell these people are uncomfortable in front of the camera, which is perhaps the intention as Stevens reveals his underlying love/hate relationship with photography. “I think photography can be exploitative because you’re using someone else’s image for your own purposes. The person being photographed becomes the artwork in a way that simply doesn’t happen in a painting. Photographers present this “reality” to their audience that says this is who this person is, but reality is a lot more complex.” After perusing the pictures, I ask Paul if any of the strangers are not strangers at all—is the real Paul Stevens hidden in the mix?

When I saw it I thought that is way too honest, way too me. It ended up going into the series but it’s okay because no one will know, and really there’s no such thing as a photo of me because me is always changing.” Stranger will be on display as part of Rainbow Youth’s Pride Art Exhibition at Studio One Toi Tu from the 11th until the 26th of February. Time to Bare All Auckland Music Theatre is staging the NZ premiere of rock musical Bare. Director Aaron Tindell tells us why he wanted to bring this Broadway hit to Western Springs! Featuring songs titled: ‘Plain Jane, Fat Ass’, and ‘God Don’t Make No Trash’, twenty-first century pop opera Bare is not your typical musical. Focusing on life at a catholic boarding school it explores weighty issues around sexuality and religion. Aaron discovered the show’s soundtrack through a recommendation on Amazon. “I was instantly captivated by the writing. Setting issues like suicide, sexual identity, self-image, and teen pregnancy to music is a safe way to confront these issues. Striking an emotional core without trivialising them.” After seeing the show in 2012, Tindell knew he had to bring it to NZ and approached

Auckland Music Theatre. “The challenge with ‘new’ shows, is that audiences are not familiar with them unless they’re a Broadway or West End phenomenon, and therefore the gems, like Bare are considered high risk for producers.” He explains, highlighting why it is infrequent that NZ audiences get to see musicals made this century without travelling overseas. Disproving the Myths of Fat Fighting Health 2000 marketing manager Stu Cook gives us the keys to successful weight loss. It’s that time of year when we all become very aware of our beach bodies! Maybe you have put on a few KGs over winter? Perhaps you have been watching the scales creep up over time, unsure of what to do? Or maybe you have just got on the scales for the first time and thought “is that my phone number or my weight?!” So what are some of the must-dos to start losing the KGs and feeling a little better? The first is to reduce your stress. This is so important because stress can affect your adrenal glands which, in turn, can make you feel tired, hungry and in need of comfort – chocolate bar in hand. Reduce the stress and you will find it so much easier to lose the weight. Secondly eat nutritious foods. Portion size is important, but so are the foods we are consuming. Good wholefoods that fuel our body are well worth the investment. Personally, having cut the rubbish foods and extra coffees, buying superfoods didn’t affect the wallet as much as I thought it would. Thirdly get moving! If you’ve heard it once, you’ve heard it a thousand times. A little goes a long way. Recently I sat down and considered how active I actually was: I got up, sat down for breakfast, sat in the car to work, sat at work all day, sat in the car on the way home, and then

sat down for dinner and TV. Since introducing activity into my day, the weight is on its way down. There are also things to avoid: Don’t starve yourself! Skipping breakfast, or trying to go as long as you can without eating (then eating a small piece of cheese – I blame The Devil Wears Prada for that one) is not going to get you thin. It’s going to make your life a misery and can cause no end of damage to your body. Trying for unrealistic achievements. Wanting six pack abs is admirable, and achievable. Wanting a six pack abs in a month is unrealistic if you are overweight, and can be the cause of losing motivation instead of weight. So be realistic and set mini milestones along the way. Time to think Finally, think about the support you have. Some people can do it alone, others need a helping hand. We are all different. If you would rather start something with a friend, give it a go and motivate each other. All in all, anything is possible if you put your mind to it and don’t try to do too much at once! The Butt of Shakespeare’s Jokes Fiendishly naughty actor and playwright Patrick Graham is taking on the role of Bottom (for the second time) in Michael Hurst’s take on A Midsummer Night’s Dream at this year’s Auckland Summer Shakespeare. express probes his passive role. So this is the second time you’ll be a Bottom? I guess that makes me vers then. I should put that on my acting CV, “Has topped and bottomed more than once” Do you think it will get me more parts? What is the best thing about being a Bottom? I get to be an ass, or make an ass of myself but not show my ass (that might frighten the ladies and most of the men)... some may say I’m a power Bottom and yes he is a bit of a ... well actually he’s an immense drama queen! I also love that he thinks he’s so intelligent but completely misuses words all the time, much like myself. Okay, serious face now, why should all express readers attend

A Midsummer Night’s Dream? It’s really funny. The actors really understand the text and I think the meaning will be well conveyed. It’s also damn sexy in places, there’s a couple of cute boys and girls and a donkey (if your into that sort of stuff). The fairies aren’t your typical twee little things at all. Of course Michael Hurst is a damn fine director and has really made this play his own and it’s just lots of fun. I’ve heard it will be a thoroughly naughty take on the old tale, can you concur? The fairy King and Queen are very saucy and the fairies themselves are very cheeky. They are played mostly by Marvelous a group of mostly over 65 year old actors. Titania also has a pair of very sensual Moon women to look after her every need… Is A Midsummer Night’s Dream your favourite Shakespeare play? It’s one of my favourites... I’m rather unusual when it comes to Shakespeare enthusiasts because I hate Hamlet. I love his comedies and his fool characters. Cutting Edge Theatre You Can’t Afford to Miss! Stutterpop-star and Metro Magazine’s ‘Most Exciting Playwright’ Sam Brooks takes us through the theatre he can’t wait to see at Wellington’s Fringe Festival and Auckland’s Pride!

The Wellington Fringe Festival is a highlight of the theatrical year, as hundreds of theatre makers descend on the capital, with their shows filling everything from BATs to Circa to someone’s lounge to the computer lab at Wellington High School. It’s where you’ll find the riskiest and bravest theatre in the country, the shows that aren’t afraid to take big leaps and fall flat on their face, or climb to unscaleable heights. After scanning the 64-page booklet, these are some of my personal picks for the festival. Loose: A Private History of Booze and Iggy Pop 1996-2015 (BATs, 1115 March) is an irresistible title by itself, but knowing that it’s being put on by Wellington comedian/actor/all-around dreamboat Jonny Potts makes it a must-see. Over sixty minutes, Potts will tell twenty stories from the past twenty years, involving two constants: drinking and Iggy Pop. Potts is a Wellington favourite thanks to a string of successful Comedy Festival shows, and I have no reason to believe this show will be anything less than brilliant. Real Fake White Dirt (BATs , 24 Feb-1 March) was one of my favourite shows of last year, a bracing vivisection of biculturalism in NZ and how we approach race in this country. Jess Holly Bates’ show is one that demands to be seen and talked about, and BATs had best make sure the roof is secured, because her tour-de-force performance threatens to blow it right off!

with a tongue-in-cheek blurb on their website, inviting us to try out for the role of community manager at ‘Wellington, Inc’. Emerging company Making Friends Collective is going to get audiences in on the ground floor, allowing them to influence and shape the show. The word ‘interactive’ sends audiences scrambling, but this show promises profundity within the interactivity. My final pick is actually three picks in one: Australian queer performer/writer Gavin Roach has toured these shows around as many festivals as there are words in this article and is bringing them to BATs in repertory, performing them in sequence with each show getting two nights. The first is called Confessions of a Grindr Addict (BATs, 6-7 March), which I suspect will sell tickets based on that name alone. It follows Felix, played by Roach, as he shares his secrets about sex, love and, ‘an odd fetish or two’. Next up is Any Womb Will Do (BATs, 8-9 March) where the same Felix, I assume, wants a baby, but being a single thirty-something gay man, does not necessarily have the equipment to make one. Out of the three this one particularly interests me, I haven’t seen a show around this topic and it’s one I’m keen to see explored and torn open onstage. For the third show, I Can’t Say The F Word (BATs, 10-11 March) Roach ‘steps out from under Felix’s shadow’ for a show that investigates why he can’t say the f-word. It promises to be a powerful closer for this trilogy.

PRIDE

Up in Auckland, Pride offers a range of shows worth checking out. A few months ago, a friend came home from Edinburgh with a play he’d bought for me to read. I devoured it in about an hour flat. Away From Home (Herald theatre, 17-21 Feb) is written by firebrand Rob Ward, and is a deceptively simple story about a British rent boy who finds himself being employed by a famous footballer. As much about sport’s attitudes to homosexuality as it is about this relationship. Away From Home is a beautiful, tremendously intelligent and incisive play, and promises to be a highlight of not only Pride, but the entire theatrical year. Don’t miss it. Equally anticipated and home grown is the second iteration of the Legacy Project, which premiered last year at The Basement to sellout houses, and this year moves to the Q Loft, with a brand new slate of six short plays by new queer writers. It’s an admirable project, more for the development of these new plays and writers than the final product, but these short pieces cover the spectrum of genre, gender and identity, from a play about coming out of the

closet to one about ‘blindfolds, bondage and ball gags’. It never hurts to get on the ground floor of writers, and the next Tom Sainsbury or Victor Rodger could well be in this group. These are my personal picks, but don’t be afraid to check out the actual programmes for more! What are you getting up to this Pride month? I am hosting Night Of The Queer with the gorgeous Lola la Bomb. It’s a beautifully curated dance, song, live music, drag, aerial and comedy show which combines the creative genius of some of Auckland’s finest artists and drag queens. You can catch a sneaky peek of the show at the Pride Gala on the 7th. I’m also going to be swanning around pop-up bar XOX in Aotea Square doing a few shows, games and general ‘campery’ throughout Pride month. Of course I will be at the LYC BGO in my new outfit designed for me by Kneel Halt and will be cavorting down Ponsonby Road on the 21st with my friends from Inspector Spot.

And did you really think they wouldn’t work out who sent it? • To my twinks of all colours, while he might promise you an international rollercoaster of creative glamour, don’t be fooled. How did you get into drag? I fell into it. I’ve always been theatrical and love dressing up in costumes and feeling the fantasy. One day I got into drag for a New Years Eve house party and I became a whole new camp entity. My friends loved it, so before long they were encouraging me to take it to the streets of K Rd and the rest is history. What do you like to get up to when you’re not in a wig and heels? To be honest, if I’m not in drag I’m either working hard at my day job or sitting at home with the flatmates dreaming up new outrageous ideas for Kita. My drag doesn’t stop when the makeup is all washed down the drain!
