Gather

About

Gather makes glass for bold, joyful gatherings, marrying contemporary colour and traditional craftsmanship. Every piece is designed by Phoebe Stubbs and handmade by her and her talented team of glass artisans in Gather’s London glassblowing studio.

How it was founded Gather was born in the depths of the pandemic. For the first time in over a decade, Phoebe wasn’t able to make glass and deeply missed the craft. This longing, combined with a desire to reconnect with friends over the table, led to Gather’s first collection: jugs and vessels celebrating the tableware in Dutch Still Life paintings, but rendered in the colours of gummy sweets. Why Gather? Gathering in glassblowing means taking molten glass from the furnace on a blowing iron, the foundational, essential move of every piece. After 16 years making glass, it’s still thrilling to extract a warm, glowing mass of glass from the furnace.

We hope our excitement is carried to your tabletops, with our vibrant glassware at the heart of all your gatherings.

Future-proofing our craft Glassblowing is an increasingly unsustainable artform, because of its expense, its long and difficult training, and use of fossil fuels. Sustainability for us means ensuring our business helps this beautiful craft evolve and live on.

“I love and deeply respect historical glassware, but bold colour excites me. Bright blue takes me to my childhood spent in warmer climates: sunshine, a soft blue pool liner, acid astroturf, fluorescent sunscreen on our noses. Orangey red conjures cartoons and colouring books; a citrus yellow, the joy of melting sweeties.”

The studio runs on a large electric furnace – our commitment to reducing our use of fossil fuels. We also have two small electric furnaces for melting our waste glass and recycling it by tinting it with colours for new products. We use a double ended reheating furnace, designed to significantly reduce our gas consumption, by making two workstations from one. We are committed to training the junior members of the team to be become not just great glassmakers and team-members, but brilliant caretakers of the craft. In their hands its future will thrive.

Verona Vases

Catalogue

Verona Vases

Available in a variety of colours, made to order The Verona Vases are a wide-necked, exaggerated take on a classic Venini vase from the 1920s called the Veronese, but with exaggerated shapes, bold colour, and just a formal nod to history. I was drawn to this form because the Veronese vase is ubiquitous among students learning American/ Italian styles of glassblowing. Its form was brought to the US by ex-factory glassblowers leaving Murano to share their skills with the budding American Art Glass movement in the 1970s. Venini’s Veronese was one of the company’s earliest and most recognisable products. Designed by Vittorio Zecchin in the 1920s, its form and name are borrowed from a famous Venetian painting by Veronese of the Annunciation of Mary, in which the vase functions as a symbol of her body as an empty vessel. And while the vase is now, thanks to Venini, almost synonymous with a Venetian glass design history, Veronese actually made the painting for a Spanish king, and similar shaped glass vessels were found in Spain and northern Europe – a great example of the complex crossing of cultures in glass design history. My design’s boldness is from fond memories of a trip to Verona with a friend aged 18. We bought ‘kilometrico’ train tickets and backpacked around Italy, falling for the ‘home’ of Romeo and Juliet, and going to the opera for the very first time. My appreciation of exaggeration and grand performances were changed forever.

Gather

Sicily Vases The symbol of Sicily is a three legged head with snakes for hair, called the Trinacria. My memory of Sicily is the intense heat. Sunshine that feels like it bakes you to your insides, not unlike the heat of the glass studio. The sunshine, and the little stone Medusa-like heads everywhere have stuck in my mind. I love making handles, and the trial and error period of judging heat creates a few snake-like accidents when learning. A handle has to go on as a fluid blob, then be coaxed into an arc of the desired shape in the seconds it takes for the glass to solidify. A bit like playing an instrument wrongly, a semi-collapsed handle is a mistake that’s hard to recreate once you’re proficient. So that was the challenge – snake-like handles, set in a wiggly position just in time for the glass to cool. I think of them as an ode to skill development, and an offering to the sunshine Gods (to ease off a bit in the summer and cool the studio down!).

How we work with clients Development We begin working with a client by having a meeting or phone discussion, which generally leads to a development day. For this, we receive designs/mood boards ahead of time, and give a round of feasibility feedback. On the day, we produce several pieces or versions of pieces, testing process, scale, form and colours. This process enables us to understand costs and MOQ requirements. Production We have an 8-10 week lead time for production projects. We’ll keep the client updated on progress. We ship glass to any location around the world. Some complex projects may take longer, but we will advise of lead time at the point of ordering. Shipping is additional.

Tableware

We worked with The Conran Shop to develop and produce a new, bespoke set of tumblers, using waved cane techniques and a contrasting lip wrap. The canes are manipulated hot to give an organic feel, and this ensures that each glass is unique.

Phoebe has worked with The Lamp Factory since 2019 to produce lighting pieces to precise drawings and colour references. These have ranged from large, pulegoso lobby lights for 180 Strand, to cane globes for ten-arm chandeliers for various Soho House members clubs, and intimate wall lights for The Ned, Doha.

We worked closely with Henry Holland Studio to develop and produce their contemporary glassware collection. To date we produce 6 variations of tumblers, and 5 colourways of stemmed wine glasses, in colours to match the studio’s unique ceramics.

Vases and Ashtrays

We have created two highly unique collections of Vaiselle Boutique glass vases, based on beautiful sketches. The process involved interpreting the sketches in glass, and then producing product to order for the designer’s clients.

We have developed two exciting drinking glasses for the well known brand, as well as a large and technically challenging jug for SS24. The pieces will be a new development for the brand, who are working with us to create more unique, unusual pieces for their discerning customers.

We developed a series of heavy, organic vases loosely inspired by forms of mushrooms for this contemporary furniture and homeware brand. Alongside these, we created three marbled ashtrays in complementary colourways. We produce these in small batches to order.

“We love working with clients to develop their ideas in glass. It’s always a fun challenge to work with new design teams, learning to interpret each other’s ways of working and design languages. The work often poses a fascinating technical challenge, creating pieces that at first we think are impossible, but through the development process produce innovative techniques and force us to finesse our production processes on the fly.” 43
