Through mediums of arts, culture and performance, Gasworks Arts Park continues to inspire us to reimagine solutions to issues of social justice, ecological sustainability and inclusiveness in the City of Port Phillip and beyond.”

Gasworks Arts Park is fertile ground for creativity with theatres, galleries, parks and courtyards, together in one precinct. The projects we produce encompass more art forms than anywhere else in Melbourne, including circus, theatre, sculpture, cabaret, markets, photography, creative classes, music, painting and ceramics.

If 2020 taught the arts industry to plan for the worst but hope for the best, 2021 retaught that lesson (again, and again…).

The special place that we inhabit, in renovated factory buildings, in a green park, is somewhere we continue to improve for our visitors. This year we will upgrade our workshops rooms, conference spaces and park information displays. The vital support of our private donors is both important and appreciated as we play our part in revitalising Melbourne’s arts scene.

In 2022, we will activate the outdoor spaces at Gasworks with more variety than ever before.

With covid safety in mind, we are offering ample space for our visitors to participate in and appreciate art outdoors. Join us for stunning circus, saucy cabaret, outdoor theatre, new gallery exhibitions, fresh farmers market produce and live music.

Many program highlights we had hoped to bring you sooner have been salvaged and will finally grace our stage in 2022. The everresilient independent arts scene is bouncing back and raring to bring live art back to life on our stages for you to support and engage with.

After the huge popularity of Circus Under The Stars in summer 2021, we are thrilled to bring you Circus In The Park – an even bigger summer series of spectacular circus and cabaret in our beautiful parklands.

Our 2022 theatre program is an embarrassment of riches but I urge you not to miss these gems: Gone Girls (an ode to Julia Gillard and Julie Bishop taking down the patriarchy), Josh Cohen’s Radiohead for Solo Piano (ostensibly your last chance to see this mesmerising performance in Australia), and The Defiant (a world premiere of fierce circus, celebrating rebellion through live music, acrobatic feats and stunt work performed entirely by women & non-binary artists).

Live art connects and nourishes us in ways we cannot take for granted. With cautiously brimming optimism, I truly cannot wait to welcome you back to Gasworks.

Let’s reunite audiences and artists, and get back to doing what we all do best!

JOSH COHEN: RADIOHEAD FOR SOLO PIANO JOSH COHEN From OK Computer to A Moon Shaped Pool, pianist Josh Cohen’s intricate, mesmerising, ever-evolving improvisation brings the songs of Radiohead to life in ways you’d never dare imagine.

Having accumulated over 8 million YouTube views, it was little surprise that the band who are famously protective of their reputation, gave their official thumbs-up to the Melbourne-based pianist to perform his breathtaking interpretations of their back catalogue worldwide.

Assimilating extensive classical and jazz training, Josh consistently embarks into unknown improvised territory despite the familiarity of the songs, seducing audiences through a heady mix of comfort and surprise.

MELBOURNE WRITERS’ THEATRE In 1884, a party of field naturalists hikes up a coastal path to reach the beach it will fight to save. In the present day, another team leads an excursion of a different kind around Albert Park Lake. In a St Kilda living room, a group of mothers stares at a pile of unwanted baby items, an idea forming. And down on Fitzroy Street, a colourful troupe raises its flags and prepares to step out in style.

Featuring a stellar ensemble cast, this compelling new drama is guaranteed to not only be a thought-provoking night at the theatre, but also an extremely enjoyable one.

Featuring spectacle and stunt work usually performed by men, ‘The Defiant’ is an ambitious exploration of gender, bodies and bravery. It challenges the casting tropes of women in physical theatre and uses this to question the space women occupy in contemporary society.

Winner of the 2020 QPAS Queer Playwriting Award and the 2019 Mudfest Emerging Artist Award, ‘Coming Out’ reflects the lived experiences of young LGBTQ+ women.

A comedy for queer women and their straight friends, this play delves into the queer; her body, her voice and her stories. Perfect for anyone who has a gay friend, sister, grandparent or colleague, this show highlights the complexity of being an ally as well as the formidable task of coming out.

As poignant as it is funny, ‘Coming Out’ explores the relationships young queer woman have with others and with themselves, in a society that doesn’t totally want them in it. Exploring these themes through humour, this comedy steers away from queer trauma, focusing instead on how beautiful it is to be us. A true celebration of female queerness.

Returning as a southside hub for Melbourne Fringe Festival, Gasworks Arts Park will again become a bustling, one-stop location for innovative and edgy theatre, circus, kids shows, comedy, visual art and more. This springtime festival showcases a program of open access works that supports the creative endeavours of new, emerging and professional artists.

Enter a kingdom that you have always known.

There are some new rules though, ones you must learn quickly in order to survive. ‘Rope Burn’ explores the good behaviour bonds that women live within. A work of physical theatre created by The Anchor, a company that ‘have developed an intimacy between the text and action that is consistently revelatory’ (Darby Turnbull, Theatre People). Male bodies will be expected to live up to the standards and mythologies imposed upon women in a landscape that is fierce and thankless.

An entertaining musical comedy exploration of bullying and our school system, featuring Jude Perl’s unique brand of stream-of-consciousness style song writing, ‘PARTICIPATION AWARD’ presents a historically accurate (*citation needed) show, which begs the age-old question – why does school suck so much?

Is it the compulsory sporting events? The one size fits all grading methods? Maintaining your precarious position in a volatile social food chain? Or is it just the arbitrary bullying?

Gasworks Arts Park runs a variety of developmental programs to assist artists in both visual and performing arts. We offer assistance with venue hire for new works, artist residencies, workshops, mentorships, commissions, and more.

Statera Sessions is a monthly meetup where artists of all disciplines can share their works in progress with audience and viewers. Free to attend, you’ll be led through the process of giving feedback through the Das Arts Method - developed in the Netherlands! This behindthe-scenes experience is hosted by Statera Circus in partnership with Gasworks Arts Park, and allows artists to test out ideas in a safe and dynamic space.

Statera Circus is a collective of four acrobats with over 50 years of collective training and performing experience. We use the Das Arts Method during our own creation, and feel it’s a powerful tool we would love to share with the Melbourne art scene. We are incredibly passionate about facilitating accessibility in the arts, and are constantly working to create space for creatives to thrive. ‘Sowing Seeds’ is a new piece of verbatim theatre, commissioned by Gasworks Arts Park. It was born out of the diverse stories, characters and cultures found within the community gardens of Melbourne, and will be performed outdoors in an immersive and site-specific way. ‘Sowing Seeds’ invites audiences into the world of the garden to share in its rituals, mourn its losses, celebrate its triumphs, and find a way to change the world, together.

ECOLIBRIUM MAY & JUNE THE GLADE & TERRACE Gasworks Arts Park, the Photography Studies College of South Melbourne and the Port Phillip Eco Centre join forces to share the secret life of the flora and fauna in the City of Port Phillip.

120 students from the Photography Studies College will be encouraged to become lifetime advocates for sustainability with the support of the Port Phillip Eco Centre. The students will all participate in a day of sustainability tours to document the flora and fauna or habitats in our wonderful city.

As part of the creative and professional development process for the students, the 120 photographs will then be installed outdoors in the Glade and Terrace areas of Gasworks Arts Park in a free public exhibition.

‘Paint Out’ returns to Gasworks Arts Park in November, but this time professional and amateur artists, arty people of all ages and nature lovers will work with the magic of music.

You are invited to paint, draw or sketch anywhere in our beautiful parklands during each 3 hour session, but now we are bringing music to your ears and through your hands.

Live musicians will play different styles of music around the park so everyone can pick different aural vibes and paint the sounds in interpretive colours.

At the conclusion of each ‘Paint Out to Music’ session, the completed artworks will be exhibited in the Foyer Gallery.

Registration for ‘Paint Out to Music’ will be announced in late 2022 through our website.

GASWORKS FARMERS’ MARKET Spend Saturday mornings on the grass soaking up the vibrant atmosphere and sampling the very best of local Victorian produce, direct from farmers and speciality makers.

Deep coloured, ripe and delicious fruit and vegetables, aromatic hand-made cakes and jams, freshly laid free range eggs and just cut flowers are only a few of the sumptuous goods you’ll find at our monthly Gasworks Farmers’ Market, held on the third Saturday of each month.

Gasworks Farmers’ Market is accredited by the Victorian Farmers’ Market Association and is proudly plastic-bag free.

SHORT TERM RESIDENCIES The Gasworks Arts Park Short Term Residency program is a professional development opportunity to incubate new projects during a 10 week residency on site. These projects are assessed for their potential to be presented publicly at Gasworks Arts Park in the future.

The residency will enable the development of studio practice, collaboration and creative conversations with peers in addition to mentoring and career guidance from the GAP management and marketing team.

SOUNDS ON THE TERRACE Gasworks Arts Park is animating the parklands and public spaces with live entertainment for audiences to enjoy throughout the warmer summer months in 2022.

‘Sounds on the Terrace’ is a weekly event providing live, family friendly, acoustic music entertainment. Food trucks will rotate each week providing audiences with dinner options.

Join us for food, grab a drink from the Gasworks Bar, and listen to music on The Terrace. This event provides opportunities for the local community to support live music in a relaxed, outdoor environment.
