Gasworks Arts Park is a vibrant arts space producing Performing Arts, Visual Arts and Outdoor Events for all ages. The precinct is home to four hectares of parkland, two theatres, three gallery spaces and a cafĂŠ, as well as function and workshop spaces. Gasworks Arts Park is just three kilometres from the CBD, situated near the beach in Albert Park, Melbourne, on the site of the former South Melbourne Gas Plant. We respectfully acknowledge the Yalukit Willam Clan of the Boon Wurrung as the Traditional Custodians of the land upon which Gasworks Arts Park is located. At Gasworks Arts Park we strive to discover and develop new and independent artists so that they have a home base to perform and exhibit year after year, building their profile and acclaim with audiences.
I have the great privilege and responsibility of helping to curate our performing arts offering at Gasworks Arts Park. It is with much passion that I invite you to engage with our 2020 season.
For all our visitors we aim to provide a special gathering place where people can forge social and personal connections through the sharing and enjoyment of art in its many forms. In 2020 we are proud to bring to Port Phillip and to Melbourne a sparkling array of fresh performances, exhibitions, markets, workshops and other cultural events. We’d like to welcome you here often and invite you to try some of our many different events. HARD TO REACH PLACES ANNA LUMB “... the most well-integrated, and most personal, work I’ve seen from an individual circus artist – an autobiographical solo show that mingles theatre, clowning, music and a killer hoop routine with infectious energy, commanding presence and the lightest of comic touches”
A day in a woman’s life is played out nonsequentially as she navigates the challenges of parenting, relationships, show business, and the unrealistic expectations she places on herself and others. Combining circus, movement, text and sound in a darkly humorous and irreverent performance, Hard To Reach Places draws from personal insight into one person’s daily experiences and the chaos that ensues from some questionable life choices.

REBEL HIGHWIRE ENTERTAINMENT Rebel is a live circus rock tribute to the original rebel, David Bowie. Stage dive into the mosh pit for a night of live music, glittering glam rock, phenomenal acrobatics, breathtaking aerials and a spectacular heart-stopping sideshow. Live music, combined with circus and comedy, brings David Bowie’s incredible 50 year career to life.

Four young Aboriginal women from regional Australia, who like singing country music, suddenly get the chance to change their tune and their lives. Wearing sequins and armed only with microphones, they find themselves trying to spread joy in the hell that is the Vietnam War.
The Sapphires written and directed by Tony Briggs is a funny, heart-warming tale inspired by the true story of Briggs’ mother. This is the incredible journey of four Yorta Yorta Women, who sing classic soul hits against the backdrop of personal change and massive social upheaval. It is an energetic, fun and engaging play that affirms life and the realisation of dreams.

THE BEST AND FAIREST MELBOURNE WRITERS’ THEATRE What does it take to make it as an Australian sportswoman? There are the long training hours, the constant juggling of sport and life – and, for the five women handpicked for this game-changing production, there are some very personal reasons to strive for Best and Fairest. Watch, listen and be inspired. Melbourne Writers’ Theatre will develop this new show as Gasworks’ 2020 companyin-residence, where they will have access to Gasworks rehearsal spaces & technical/ administrative support.

BACH BY CANDLELIGHT CHRIS HOWLETT

Illuminated only by a circle of candles, Chris Howlett performs Bach’s most recognised cello suites in an intimate and evocative recital. Bach by Candlelight is a performance that verges on the sublime. The minimalism and simplicity of candlelight and flickering shadows enhances Howlett’s performance of arguably the most famous solo cello works ever written. Throughout the journey, Chris shares insight into the history of Bach, the suites and the challenges of performing them.

AT GASWORKS MELBOURNE FRINGE FESTIVAL With many years as the southside hub for Melbourne Fringe Festival, Gasworks brings you an exciting program of theatre, circus, kids shows and visual art. Fringe will take over Gasworks with a flurry of activity, with the full Fringe at Gasworks program announced in August. Feature performances in our 2020 program include: Casting Off by A Good Catch (intergenerational circus with lots to say) and I Have A Face by Jude Perl (comedic cabaret with a conscience). We welcome expressions of interest to particpate until May.

How can one person make a difference against the weight of the world?
In April 1895, playwright Oscar Wilde was found guilty of gross indecency and with his sentence came a worldwide scandal. But, what of his wife? What of his two children? Oscar’s trial left his family bankrupt, homeless and friendless. After Oscar tells the story of Mrs. Constance Holland, the wife of Oscar Wilde, who fled to the continent hoping to create a new life for herself and her children.
Cataclysm is a gritty and disarming circus work of dynamic aerials and contemporary dance. Featuring some of Australia’s up and coming circus talent, these acrobats pulsate on stage with electrifying skills including aerial straps, acrobatic tumbling, roue Cyr and fast-paced manipulation, all set to an eclectic soundtrack.
After Oscar is a new play being presented as part of the Premiere at Gasworks season, written by Verity Norbury and produced by the team at Norbury Productions.

GASWORKS FARMERS’ MARKET
Residing within the walls of Gasworks Arts Park are the Ceramics, Visual Arts and Sculpture Studios where 15 resident artists contribute to a thriving artistic community.
Spend Saturday mornings on the grass soaking up the vibrant atmosphere and sampling the very best of local Victorian produce, direct from farmers and speciality makers.
Gasworks resident artists play an important role in our connected arts hub; working together to provide publicly accessible tours, studio openings, activities, and workshops.
Deep coloured, ripe and delicious fruit and vegetables, aromatic hand-made cakes and jams, freshly laid free range eggs and just cut flowers are only a few of the sumptuous goods you’ll find at our monthly Gasworks Farmers’ Market, held on the third Saturday of each month.
The studios are open to the public on the 3rd Saturday of every month for the Gasworks Farmers’ Market. Please contact the Visual Arts Manager by emailing tracey@gasworks.org.au to book a tour for your school or activity group.

NEW RETRACTABLE SEATING Our fundraising efforts for a new theatre seating bank is supported by Creative Partnerships Australia through Plus 1. This matched funding support kick-started our fundraising campaign with amazing results. INFORMATION ACCESSIBILITY The Gasworks Theatre utilises Assistive Listening Systems. You can collect a Hearing Loop or Earpiece from our Box Office as appropriate. Service dogs are welcome at Gasworks. All Gasworks venues are wheelchair accessible and we offer a second ticket at no cost to people who possess a Companion Card.
