Situated near the beach in Albert Park, Melbourne, on the site of the former South Melbourne Gas Plant, Gasworks Arts Park is just three kilometres from the CBD. The precinct is home to four hectares of park, two theatres, three gallery spaces, a cafĂŠ, as well as function and workshop spaces. Gasworks Arts Park is a vibrant arts space producing Performing Arts, Visual Arts and Outdoor Events for all ages.

This year’s program is built around great stories and invigorating dance and physical theatre. In our Moving Parts season we see dramatic elements evoking emotion and bodies flexing in motion. Enjoy stories from Oscar Wilde, Lindy Chamberlain and Hannie Rayson, and a new Australian comedy from Ilbijerri Theatre where more is uncovered on a father daughter road trip than anyone can predict.

Experience gravity-defying break dancing from international festival award winners Elements Collective, and if you have some urban dance moves yourself, participate in our public Dance Battle. In a Gasworks first, we’ll be giving you 3D glasses so you can fully experience Parallax with Megan Beckwith, the only artist in Australia who dances with 3D holographic projections.

There is something for the little ones as well, with circus and comedy created specially for kids during school holidays.

Enjoy a drink before a show in the new look theatre bar, and share some special time with family and friends at Gasworks Arts Park.

Written in 1897 from Reading Gaol to his lover and betrayer Lord Alfred Douglas, Oscar Wilde’s infamous letter is a complex and contradictory meditation on the nature of suffering and forgiveness.

Oscar Wilde’s persecution for being gay, his turmoil and transformation in prison unfolds in this brutal and touching work.

Investigating queer rights, their quashing, emergence and acceptance – it draws together the threads of current debates, reflecting ongoing concerns through the mirror of time.

The sisters are reunited after ten years and again feel the constraints of family life.

Meg’s semi-autobiographical novel is the catalyst that breaks open familial tensions, bringing questions of loyalty and truth to the forefront. Gasworks Arts Park’s Circus Showdown provides professional development opportunities for circus and physical theatre artists in a festival showcase loved by audiences since 2012.

The only performance opportunity of its kind in Australia, Gasworks Circus Showdown invites artists from across Australia to present 10-15 minute solo, duo or group acts in a professional venue under the guidance of experienced circus professionals. Participants have access to rehearsal space, a lighting designer and technical staff and receive feedback by a live panel of industry professionals.

Two public heats culminate in a final showcase that brings the most advanced artists together for one night, where an overall winner will be awarded a series of career development opportunities. Previous finalists have used Gasworks Circus Showdown as a springboard to develop new works which have been performed nationally and internationally.

The story captivated the nation. A mother accused of murdering her child, her claim – that the baby was taken by a dingo – denied and discredited by zealous police and a flawed legal system. The media circus, the rumours, the mob mentality, the nation’s prejudices laid bare.

Over three decades, from baby Azaria’s death to the final coroner’s report, the public wrote more than 20,000 letters to Lindy Chamberlain; traversing the gamut of human responses from sympathy to abuse.

Letters to Lindy draws on this extraordinary correspondence and interviews with Lindy herself, to create an enthralling, revealing, and long overdue dialogue between Lindy Chamberlain and the nation.

FRINGE AT GASWORKS MELBOURNE FRINGE FESTIVAL Building on many successful years as an official hub for the Melbourne Fringe Festival, Fringe at Gasworks will return in 2018, hosting our signature array of circus, theatre, children’s shows and visual arts exhibitions. The atmosphere of the festival will take over Gasworks, fresh, vibrant and exciting.

The full Fringe at Gasworks program will be announced in August.

DEVELOPING ARTISTS SMALL GEMS Gasworks Arts Park, Hobsons Bay City Council, Burrinja Cultural Centre, Kingston Arts and The Melba Spiegeltent comprise Small Gems. This coalition of venues commissions independent works that are of professional quality, contemporary interest and in the genre of drama, dance, hybrid theatre, circus and ground based physical theatre, in order to help create new work, support artists with a track record of high quality production output, and contribute positively to the Australian theatre scene.

Applications open and close in February 2018.

SCRIPT NIGHTS NEW IDEAS | NEW SCRIPTS | NEW ART Be part of the process. Script Nights explore new works by local Australian playwrights. Audience members have the opportunity to hear a rehearsed reading of a new works, or work in development each month. Each reading is followed by a Q&A with the writer.

This is a free event, presented in partnership with Key Conspirators.

GASWORKS FOUNDATION Gasworks Patrons Foundation provides an opportunity for members of the community to support the park and its programs.

Through the Foundation our community helps to fund projects that have a lasting impact on the site such as- artists’ showcases, public sculptures, special exhibitions and more. Foundation patrons belong to a group of dedicated supporters that are among Gasworks’ closest friends and enjoy special opportunities to engage with park’s precinct and programs.

GASWORKS FARMERS MARKET Deep coloured, ripe and delicious fruit and vegetables, aromatic hand-made cakes and jams, freshly laid free range eggs and just cut flowers are only a few of the sumptuous goods you’ll find at our monthly Gasworks Arts Park Farmers Markets.

You’ll love spending Saturday mornings on the grass soaking up the vibrant atmosphere and sampling the very best of local Victorian produce.

The Gasworks Resident Artist Studios are also open during the Farmers Market, so make sure you pop in and say hello!

SHOWCASE STUDIO Open to the public Thursday to Saturday from 11am to 3pm, this studio is a window into the creative activities of our resident artists. Everyone is welcome to the Showcase Studio where Visual Artist Robert Lee Davis creates beautiful mixed media paintings. You can also view and purchase the latest works to come out of the studios of our other 15 resident artists.

With the addition of rows on the floor, the standard capacity for most theatre shows is 192. The theatre can also accommodate cabaret-style seating around 10 tables for up to 50 patrons, situated in front of the seating bank (total audience numbers remain at 192 for this set up). The theatre can fit up to 300 seats for other types of events, such as conferences, by utilising a reduced stage space.

The venue is particularly suited to productions where intimate contact between the audience and the performers is desired. The theatre is wheelchair accessible and fully air-conditioned.

There is extensive lighting and sound equipment available to hirers of the space.

During Melbourne’s major festivals (including the Midsumma Festival, Melbourne International Comedy Festival and the Melbourne Fringe Festival) Gasworks partners with theatre hirers to produce a festival season.

STUDIO THEATRE The Studio Theatre is an intimate performance space with floorboards and flat rows of moveable seating for up to 60 patrons. It has an industrial ambience and is ideal for a variety of uses including workshops, small productions, seminars, demonstrations, dance classes, rehearsals, readings or as a green room in conjunction with theatre hire.

The space comes complete with a raked rostra seating bank but floor-level seating may be placed in any configuration in the space.

VENUE HIRE

Theatre hirers receive a marketing kit as part of their hire fee, which includes a step-by-step guide to assist with promoting your production.
