WELCOME

Gasworks Arts Park offers beautiful heritage buildings nestled in a green park, a short walk from the beach. With indoor and outdoor arts and cultural activities all year round, we are excited to share a fresh new lineup of art and artists for our visitors to discover.

Whether it’s circus, music, cabaret, exhibitions, classes or our famous Farmers’ Market, Gasworks Arts Park provides the opportunity to meet, mingle and experience the work of skilled makers and creators. We develop and support many Melbourne, Australian and world premiere performances and exhibitions; we are an incubator and laboratory for new art, preparing it to be seen for the first time.

Don’t miss the spectacular outdoor circus performances this January, and the multi-artform group exhibition of our resident artists, Renewal, in July. Both of these ensemble showcases are being designed and devised especially for Gasworks Arts Park. This year, we invite you to gather together with family and friends more than ever. We all enjoy connecting and we have some lost time to make up for; in 2023, consider taking advantage of our new group ticket price offer. See you in the theatres, galleries, park or cafe in 2023!

CODE OF CONDUCT

Gasworks & Rory Godbold 7 – 11 Feb  Studio

Theatre

The premiere season of an award winning new Australian play that’s both deeply personal and ripped-from-the-headlines. Paul is the new teacher on staff, and he’s expected to play by the rules – he’s signed the Code of Conduct after all. But everyone at the school has their own way of playing the game, including a student questioning their identity, and another teacher who keeps his cards close to his chest. When boundaries in and out of the classroom are crossed, relationships and identities within the school are set to explode, leaving it one wrong move away from making the papers.

Written by critically acclaimed and Green Room nominated playwright Rory Godbold (When the Light Leaves) and with direction by the visionary Mark Wilson (Bighouse Dreaming), Code of Conduct is the must-see theatre experience for Midsumma 2023.

“...moving and nuanced... a talented, emotionally honest dive into a tragic human situation”

Enter into the wacky world of sea monsters in high heels and angry mobs with tiny pitchforks.

When Grumms transforms into a horrible, squid monster (think Creature from the Black Lagoon meets The Muppets), they must hide their identity and try to pass in society as a “normal, human woman”.

A touching story of acceptance that anyone can relate to; with spellbinding video projection, digital puppetry and ‘laugh-out-loud’ physical comedy, Something in the Water is an absurd exploration of identity, gender and growing up “normal”.

Ragtag acrobats tumble down the rabbit hole of morning madness. Join this group of acrobats for a Sunday Cup of Absurdi-tea; a circus/physical theatre show about being each other’s crash mat. A group of friends and acrobats explore the way in which we carry the ones we love when they are unable to carry themselves. You’ll leave wanting to pop on a brew, sit down with a cuppa and tell your friends you love them.

ACCESS MEMORY

Tegan Nash Ollett with Isadoré 1 – 3 Jun  Studio Theatre

Choreographer/Performer: Tegan Nash Ollett Sound Designer/Performer: Isadoré

This new dance installation is as impressive as a kaleidoscope of sculpture, light, sound and the moving body.

Through the manipulation of sculptural forms, Access Memory explores the navigation of precariousness in search of stability, reflecting on personal histories and evoking universal experiences.

Witness impressive light states appear and shift as the sculpture and the body find balance. Isadoré’s live sound accompanies the movement with haunting vocals and instrumentation guided by the often unpredictable interplay between body and form. Is this a process of internal scaffolding, drawing on everything we know and experience?

IN COMMON

Gasworks & One Fell Swoop Circus Oct  Gasworks Park

Gasworks is partnering with One Fell Swoop Circus (By A Thread, Kilter, Sensory Decadence) to present their brand new work outdoors in our parklands over spring….

Wander through the Gasworks parklands and stumble upon an impossible structure built from steel and wire held aloft with floating, invisible tension. A thrilling new work by One Fell Swoop Circus, In Common sees the impossible tensegrity sculpture brought to life by the company’s signature style of acrobatics – heartfelt, powerful, and intimate. Virtuosic acrobatics and intricate choreography guide audiences through a visceral understanding of the care we owe others in our community and the safety nets we collectively weave. An exploration of tension, both structural and relational, In Common lets audiences experience the joy of throwing yourself into someone else’s arms and the weight of bearing them.
