The Pentagon Division of the U.S. Naval Sea Cadets Corps and Navy League Cadet Corps held its annual inspection Jan. 19 at Naval Support Facility Dahlgren in a ceremony that also featured promotions, awards and an impressive drill team exhibition. The inspection was conducted by Cmdr. Elvis Mikel, executive officer of Naval Support Activity South Potomac and the ceremony’s guest speaker. The Naval Sea Cadet Corps and Navy League Cadet Corps are sea servicesthemed organizations for young people ages 10 to 18 that emphasize community service, teamwork, citizenship and discipline. The patriotism, courage and self-reliance they teach is vitally important for young people as they grow up and become the citizens we all need them to be.” Inspections offer important lessons about achieving success in life, Mikel told the cadets. “One thing in life that you’ll learn, something that is illustrated by the inspection, is attention to detail. That’s one of the first things you learn in the military: If you can focus and complete all the small tasks, the large tasks

Navy senior technologist honored with Defense Medal

Chris O’Donnell, a senior technologist at Naval Surface Warfare Center Indian Head Explosive Ordnance Disposal Technology Division (NSWC IHEODTD), received the Office of the Secretary of Defense Medal for Exceptional Civilian Service in the Pentagon, Jan. 10. The Executive Secretary of the Warfighter Senior Integration Group, Andrew Hunter, presented O’Donnell the medal, which is the Office of the Secretary of Defense’s highest level career medaled award. O’Donnell, who began his career in 1984 at NSWC IHEODTD, was recognized for his work while on assignment to the Office of the Secretary of Defense for Acquisition, Technology and Logistic, as Senior Technical Analyst. The award - signed by

tend to take care of themselves. That’s what the personnel inspection does. it helps focus your attention on the details and helps accomplish the mission. That is a skill that will serve you as you go through life.” Mikel thanked instructors and parents for their efforts supporting Pentagon Division. “I’d like to thank the adult leadership, the officers of the unit, for providing the activities and organization. Without them, this would not be possible. I’d also like to thank the family members-the mothers, the fathers, the uncles, the aunts, the grandparents-who help support the event program. Without your support at home, that success wouldn’t be there. Thank you for your support.” The positive impacts of the program were evident during the inspection itself, as the young people stood in formation in crisp uniforms that they prepared themselves. “Cadets, you look great, sound great, you’ve got confidence and that will help take you a long way in your fu-
ture,” Mikel told the young people. “Well done.” Benjamin, a 10-year old member of the Navy League Cadet Corps, admitted he was a little nervous “at first” about standing his first-ever inspection. “After we practiced a few times, it wasn’t that bad,” he said. The parents of other 10-year olds might be surprised at the skills Benjamin learned and used to prepare for the inspection. “For the inspection, I washed my shirt, dried it and then ironed it,” he said. “My pants already had creases in them, so they were okay. I got a lint roller and rolled all my clothes.” Benjamin’s mom, Liana Jones, said he decided to get good grades, stay physically fit and develop his foreign language skills at a young age so he could one day join the Navy. “He said he could give two years to his country and they could pay for his college,” she said. “So [Benjamin] has a plan. He was very excited to join the Sea Cadets.” Benjamin’s first five months with the Pentagon Division has been an inspiration. “It gives him structure,” said Jones.

The new Liberty Center coordinator at Naval Support Facility Indian Head hasn’t let power outages and winter weather stop her from creating some exciting events for Marines and Sailors assigned to the base. On the job for less than two weeks, Alice Gilliland is already planning a Super Bowl Party for Feb. 2, a trip to Arundel Mills on Feb. 5, a video game contest Feb. 13, a poker and wing night on Feb. 19 and a ski trip on Feb. 22. The daughter and granddaughter of Navy officers, Gilliland’s experience as a military child helped underscore both the challenges of military life and the importance of rest and recreation for service members. The Annapolis native began working at Naval Support Activity Annapolis while attending Towson University; after graduation, Gilliland returned as a recreation aid and a volunteer at the U.S. Naval Academy’s Nimitz Library. The latter position gave
Gilliland, an enthusiastic reader and history buff, a front-row seat to some very unique historical documents. Neither the academy records of a midshipman who later became a president, nor the autopsy records of John Paul Jones were the most interesting things she encountered, however. “I was going through an oversize collection and in one drawer, I saw framed letters,” she said. “One was from Alexander Hamilton and the next one from George Washington. I wasn’t sure they were real or if anyone knew they were back there. When I told [the library staff], they had no idea. It was really cool.” While NSF Indian Head is not quite so historic, Gilliland said her experiences on base have been positive and she looks forward to learning more about the Marines and Sailors assigned to the Chemical Biological Incident Response Force, her largest group of customers. “Everyone seems really nice,” she said. “I’m really excited to learn more about

These guys seem very excited to try new things and I’m excited to be able to take them on different trips, not just to go places, but to gain an experience or new skills. I want to grow the sense of community at the Liberty Center here.” Gilliland plans to use her familiarity with the region to help guide new Liberty Center excursions. “I’m familiar with what Washington and Baltimore have to offer and I’m looking forward to showing the Marines and Sailors,” she said. Gilliland’s goal is to en-
courage young service members to try new things, while also offering them a welcoming, familiar refuge. “Even though the military has a support system, it can be challenging to be away from your family,” she said. “With the Liberty Center, you want it to be a home away from home, where [service members] can relax in a stress-free environment, watch a movie, play a video game and maybe forget about their tough job for a little while.” Though Gilliland is still learning her new base and new customers, working at the Liberty Center and with other likeminded Morale, Welfare and Recreation employees has already proven rewarding. “Recreation is always a fun area to work,” said Gilliland. “Recreation is enjoyment and we’re all about bringing joy to others. Dahlgren Museum opens doors to the public By Gary Wagner Dahlgren Heritage Foundation The Dahlgren Heritage Museum is set to open its doors to the public for the first time on a regular operating schedule. Beginning on Saturday, Feb. 15, the museum will be open from 12 noon to 4 p.m. on the third Saturday of each month. The museum is operated by the non-profit Dahlgren Heritage Foundation to showcase and help preserve the history, traditions, heritage and culture of the United States Navy and other Department of Defense activities located at Naval Support Facility Dahlgren, Va. In addition to establishing and operating the Dahlgren Heritage Mu-

“Our hope is to be able to expand our hours as we are able to bring on additional volunteers to help staff the museum,” she explains. A one-hour training seminar for volunteers to serve as docents at the museum is currently being offered on Thursday, Jan. 30, at 5-6 p.m. and on Saturday, Feb. 1, at 12 noon-1 p.m. Any adult interested in volunteering to serve as a docent (a person who leads tours especially through a museum or art gallery) is invited to attend the training, which will be conducted at the Dahlgren Museum. The Dahlgren Heritage Museum is located in the former Virginia Gateway Visitor Center on Hwy. 301 in King George, Va., adjacent to Wayside Park on the Potomac River. NSWC IHEODTD team helps establish U.S. production source for critical energetics material From NSWC IHEODTD Public Affairs Naval Surface Warfare Center Indian Head Explosive Ordnance Disposal Technology Division’s (NSWC IHEODTD) TATB [triamino-trinitrobenzene] project team members earned recognition from Department of Defense (DoD) and Department of Energy (DOE) leadership, Dec. 5. The TATB Working Group received a Letter of Appreciation from Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition, Technology and Logistics; and National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) for the multi-Department/multiService/industry effort to establish a U.S. production source of the energetics material. “TATB is a crucial material for DoD as it is used in many booster and fuzing systems for missiles, bombs, and artillery warheads,” said Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition, Technology and Logistics Frank Kendall in his Letter of Appreciation. “For decades, there had not been a continental United States source of the material, and the United Kingdom source had not produced the material for nearly 10 years. DoD had been forced to utilize stockpile material that Department of Energy had available, which had been nearly exhausted prior to the TATB project team’s efforts.”
Multiple production scale batches of the essential material have now been successfully produced, meeting both DoD and DoE specifications. Additional booster formulations have been formulated with the TATB, and met all requirements. In the NNSA Award of Excellence signed by Deputy Administrator for Defense Programs Donald Cook, the TATB team was commended for, “.flawlessly executing this project through optimizing the knowledge, capabilities, and expertise of the DOE and DoD national laboratories, production sites, and federal program management.” NSWC IHEODTD is a field activity of the Naval Sea Systems Command, part of the Department of the Navy’s science and engineering enterprise, and the DoD Energetics Center of Excellence. Ballet / Jazz & Tap Classes

On Sunday, January 5, the old Colonial Beach High School building, which was currently serving as school storage, was destroyed in a fire. This included the destruction of all school and office supplies for the school system. Donations are needed to assist Colonial Beach students with supplies for the rest of the
school year. The school district is in desperate need of any type of school supplies, office supplies, copy paper, etc. Anyone connected with school divisions, they are also in need of some classroom tests or practice tests. Registration for Middle School Basketball Leagues
Middle school students can now register to play in the high school basketball preparatory league. This league is designed to allow middle school students who have dreams of playing high school basketball an opportunity to play against their peers. There will be an eight game regular season with playoffs. Players can only play at the middle school community center that they currently attend. Students attending private school must play for the center in their appropriate school zone. Practice is estimated to start the week of March 11. This program is open to all students in grades six through eight for the 2013-2014 school year. Divisions include the following: Sixth grade boys; Seventh grade boys; Eighth grade boys and Sixth, seventh, and eighth grade girls. Registration fee is $90 (or $75 if registered by Feb. 16). Snakehead Naming Contest
The Charles County Commissioners invite citizens to participate in a Snakehead Naming Contest. Beginning at noon on Tuesday, Jan. 7, go online to www.CharlesCountyMD.gov/ snakehead-naming-contest and submit ideas for a new and improved name for the snakehead fish. Only one submission per individual will be accepted. Entries must be submitted no later than Thurs., Feb. 6, 2014 11:59 p.m. EST. Prizes will be awarded to three individuals whose entries receive the most votes. The final, winning name will be sent to the Maryland Department of Natural Resources in hopes that the state will consider the name as the snakehead’s new, “official” name.
