A Huge thank you to everyone

who helped make the village fete such a success. You know who you are and we couldn't do it every year without your help. Thank you. If you couldn't make it this year - there's always next - look out for the date in future editions of the Crier. Fete funds get distributed to village organisations such as the Church, Friends of St Nicholas, the Village Hall and Orchard Ground Committee. See you again next year!

SOME PHOTOS FROM THE SUPER

CUBLINGTON SUMMER FETE

Thank You everyone...what a great day!

Editorial Welcome to the second half of the year! At the beginning of July we expect the weather to be warm so it is perhaps surprising to learn that this is the point in in the Earth’s slightly eccentric orbit when we are actually furthest from the Sun (aphelion). And yet the average temperature of the Earth is 2.3 degrees C higher than it is in early January when the Earth is 5 million km closer to the Sun (perihelion). Apparently this is to do with the Earth’s tilt and how its oceans and land masses are distributed – in July the continents of the Northern Hemisphere are baked by the sun whereas in January the oceans of the much more ‘watery’ Southern hemisphere absorb the extra sunlight. Perhaps we should be grateful that the Earth is ‘this way up’… So much for the ‘bigger picture’. Zooming in just a little, surely this is one of the finest times of year to be living in this country. Long evenings, gardens in full bloom, summer holidays, a summer of sport, outdoor theatre, music festivals to suit all tastes, the pervasive smell of charcoal smoke… There is but one fly in the ointment amid all this exuberance. No, this has nothing to do with England ‘s prospects in the World Cup (this is written before a ball has been kicked in anger). We refer of course to the 15th of July and the legend that St Swithin’s day if thou dost rain For forty days it will remain It is recorded that in 971AD the bones of St Swithin were moved to an indoor shrine and the severe weather on that day was thought to represent the good man’s posthumous displeasure. Meteorologists acknowledge that there may be a grain of truth in the legend in that the jet streams that influence our weather tend to settle in one area in mid-July with either beneficial or adverse effects on our summer. How often have our schoolchildren and students struggled to prepare for exams during the dog days of early summer only for their long-awaited holidays to turn out to be a damp squib. So here’s hoping that those pesky jet streams will not disturb our carefree summer frolics, that all of us with allotments or gardens will have our work cut out with the watering and that of us who favour a barbecue will be constantly replenishing our stores of charcoal. Happy holidays! Richard and Polly Thornely

If you love the Crier we really would like your further input... If you are willing to help in any way... whether it be delivering, writing the odd letter, or sending an article you think might be of interest or any sort of regular contributions like Who Am I? Please do it as The Crier only survives with content. The editor can't be expected to do everything every month. The guest editor list is now being compiled for 2019, yes we really do plan that far ahead! To be the guest editor: You only have to design or find a front cover image, write an intro editorial of your choice and provide a few or as many pages of content of your choice as you want. It's really not that bad or that hard. Go on please give it a go The more who do it - the less we have to ask. Thanks. Contact: Sandie Joy 01296 682446

Cublington Open Gardens

Gridlock in Cublington!

The sun shone and the crowds decended on Cublington. Cars were parked everywhere! 330 people flocked through the five open gardens and over ÂŁ2229 was raised for charity. Amazing. Congrats to the Gadsbys - awarded a special trowel with a plaque for 10 years of garden opening. Well done. Thanks to the ladies who did the teas and to those who baked cakes.. and well done also to everyone for being brave enough to open their garden... they looked absolutely stunning! Lots of great comments from visitors on the gardens, the teas, the map and the whole village. Can someone please come and vacuum my lawn and get rid of all our weeds! Ed

Spotted - New Fencing at Rose Cottage - very nice. Spotted - Someone vacuuming their lawn prior to

SPOTTED!

the Open Gardens charity day.

Spotted - 300 odd people causing traffic chaos in Cublington on Open Gardens Day.

Spotted - Lovely bunting down the high street and

all over the village for the month of June. Well done and thank you everyone. We particularly liked the World Cup flags at Bell Close and the inventive bunting down Church Path!

Spotted - A beautifully weeded waterpump with lovely flowers in baskets/pots. Well done Kathy!

Spotted - the Best Kept Village judges wandering

round on the Friday before the fete. Luckily I was able to extol the village's virtues while they were lunching at OG and gave them a nice cup of tea to remember us by Oh and Crier! Ed.

Spotted - Lancaster bomber flying over Cublington

PLEASE

keep your eyes peeled ...If you spot anything, and we do mean anything - of interest in the village - please let us know.

Spotted - This massive European

hornet in our bedroom - and the very next day in our greenhouse. Never seen one in 60 years and two in two days! Apparently this is fairly harmless while the Asian hornet (identified by it having and orange yellow head and yellow on lower feet) is extremely aggresive and sightings should be reported.

after the Trooping of the Colour celebrations in London.

Spotted - Bees flying in under the eaves

above the door at Biggs Pavilion. Worth a mention as Bees are the theme of this Crier.

SHOWN ACTUAL SIZE

Spotted - Lovely hedgehog visiting in our garden.

First time we've seen one. Ed I know Courgette Bob has a family and the Joys regularly feed one. Any other sightings?

Spotted - Someone has rebuilt the

old wooden grave outside the church... We have an old picture (see below) featuring some of the inscription but another wooden grave can be seen behind... so which one is it?

Spotted -

Cublington’s own motionless dial doing its best to imitate the church at Grantchester, of which Rupert Brooke famously wrote “....yet Stands the Church clock at ten to three And is there honey still for tea?” We're reliably informed that the clock was indeed stopped, it's not just when the picture was taken Ed

Spotted - Mysterious woman in dark glasses at the Songs of Praise service. Do we have a celebrity in our midst?

Spotted - A black dog, chasing the sheep in the field near Orchard Ground.

Please keep your dogs on leads near livestock. One lamb lost :-(

What did you want to be when you grew up? A circus animal trainer What was your first job? In a baker’s – yum! Who (alive or dead) would you like to have dinner with and why? (You can have more than one!) Prince Philip, Billy Connolly and Bruce Springsteen. For the anecdotes, the laughs and the music. What historical era would you like to have lived in and why? If I can’t choose the future, then it would have to be the present. I certainly wouldn’t want to live when there was no pain relief and where women were inferior beings. Where would you want to live if not where you live now and why? By the sea, on a cliff, What is the temptation you wish you could resist? Chocolate, chocolate and chocolate! What is your favourite book and why? Invariably the one I'm currently reading but also too many to mention. What is your favourite song and why? As above but more so and very much depends on my mood at the time! What is the pet hate that makes your hackles rise? Lack of respect, bad manners and litter to name but a few! What is the unlikely interest that engages your curiosity? Geology, Meteorology and Cosmology How long have you lived in Cublington? 24 years.

Answer somewhere in the Crier.

PLEASE let us know of any event in the Village you are running. If we don't know about it we can't help publicise it. By the 15th of every month before please.

Challenging each other to love learning and truly care. We are very proud of our recent and up to date Ofsted Inspection in February 2018 which rated us ‘good’ and observed ‘exemplary’ teaching. It commented: ‘Children get off to a super start in the early years’ and ‘children sparkle with enthusiasm about the many different subjects that they study’ North Marston C of E School has vacancies in Reception class, Year 3 and Year 5! Would you be interested in your child attending a school where: “The school’s Christian values and vision for pupils to “love learning and truly care” are woven through the work of the school. Pupils have highly positive attitudes to learning, respect and care for each other and value their unique qualities. They behave beautifully and the school is a purposeful, happy and thriving community.” If so, come and see for yourself! PLANNING FOR THE NORTH FIELD

Development

In April, Cublington Parish Council received a helpful letter from Aylesbury Vale District Council setting out what work would be needed to prepare a planning application for the change of use proposed at the North Field. AVDC also suggests that the principle of development is likely to be acceptable. With a positive response from AVDC, the Parish Council are now keen to move on with making a planning application. There is a full list of drawings and reports that AVDC will need to see and so its time to step forward if you, or family and friends, have any of the following skills or background and would like to get involved:

• Technical drawing • Landscape design • Civil engineering to advise on flooding issues • Expertise in the use of landscape material • Civil engineering to advise on moving material around the site (cut and fill balancing exercise) • Tree / arboricultural knowledge to advise on and carry out a survey under the British Standard BS5837 • Health and Safety / RoSPA • Ecology / biodiversity identification

In the first instance, please contact Pippa Cheetham at 7 Ridings Way or on 07881 953124 or pippacheetham@aol.com Pippa will arrange the first meeting in early July with the aim of submitting the planning application by the end of this year. Many thanks in advance.

From the Reverend Dear friends, The beginning of July brings a brief respite in the life of students after GCSE and A level exams are over and before the long process of university/ vocational/ professional training, or just getting down to the beginning of a life of work! It also marks the time when we remember 'doubting Thomas' in the Church. Poor old Thomas forever lumbered with this title and all because he missed the risen Jesus when He appeared to the other disciples in the upper room and showed them the scars in His hands and side. Why wasn't Thomas with them? Was he too upset, confused or just in a sulk having felt he'd been misled in some way? Whatever the truth of the situation it doesn't make him an atheist or a pseudo-scientist as some have tried to say. He was a very ordinary man trying

FR

CU

to deal with the reality of his world in pieces after such an amazing three years on the road with Jesus and the others. He'd seen people healed, heard phenomenal teachings and seen the conflict of Holy Week leading to the sadness of Good Friday. Is it that surprising that he had a momentary glitch when confronted with the fact that Jesus actually did what He always said He would... rise from the dead in the third day. I have a personal affection for the 'doubter' because it was on his feast day 36 year's ago that I was Ordained a Priest in the Church of God and still find him fascinating to ponder upon. God bless, Philip. Reverend Philip Derbyshire

The Unicorn has its own golf society (TUGS), drawn from an eclectic bunch of regular and occasional patrons. You are warmly invited to join TUGS and please don’t worry, any standard of golfing prowess is welcome – there is no fee to join. Just as we receive great local support at The Unicorn, we like to support local courses, so all 4 meetings are at local clubs with one different course each year. The format is always individual stableford (full handicap, max 24 for men and 36 for ladies) and Members will compete for the TUGS trophy at each meeting. There will be a special prize for the person who has accumulated the highest aggregate of stableford points (best 3 rounds out of 4) which will be awarded after the final meeting of the year.

OPEN 7 DAYS A WEEK

Strange days in the calendar We are all aware that certain days of the year are set aside, usually by a government or major organization, to commemorate particular individuals or historical events, or major issues concerning public health etc. This month, on the 4th, the Americans will celebrate Independence Day in their characteristically understated way with plenty of fireworks, baseball games and the like. Hopefully this will not involve huge alien mother ships taking positions over the world’s major cities. On 12th July at least some of our Northern Irish brethren will get out their fifes and drums to celebrate the victory of William of Orange at the Battle of the Boyne and in the process wind up a lot of other people. And not to be outdone, on 14th July the French will celebrate the storming of the Bastille in 1789 which sparked off a bloodthirsty decade of political turmoil and changed the course of history, All of this is familiar enough. The purpose of this short feature is to highlight some of the lesser known commemorative dates which fall in July. Please note that all of them are entirely genuine. 1st July, for starters, is Creative Ice Cream Flavors Day. The spelling is deliberate and betrays the day’s transatlantic origins. If you thought that Ben and Jerry or Haagen-Daz already offered a sufficiently wide range of flavours, how about the following offerings from Japan;

seafood and green tea

shrimp python jellyfish On second thoughts, I’ll make do with a raspberry ripple. 2nd July marks World UFO Day . This marks the date of the supposed UFO crash in the 1947 ‘Roswell Incident”. One for the conspiracy theorists, methinks. Still, apparently 1 in 50 Americans claims to have been abducted by aliens, so perhaps one should not mock. Or perhaps one should. 3rd July is Stay out of the Sun Day. A shame it falls in July rather than, say, February but of course there is a serious underlying message here. So perhaps this is the day to buy a hammock and recline in the shade with a nice bottle of Chablis… 5th July marks Bikini Day. It would probably be wise for a bloke of a certain age such as myself to refrain

from further comment on this for fear of upsetting anyone’s sensibilities. My grandfather would certainly have regarded this particular celebration as a splendid idea and everyone would have smiled with him… I’m still not sure how the intentions behind this day are to be reconciled with those of Stay Out of the Sun Day. 7th July is Tell the Truth Day. Research at the University of California suggests that people tell an average of two lies a day. If this were to include any white lies that we may say in order to avoid giving offence the figure would doubtless be much higher. One recalls the classical ‘liar’s paradox’ beloved of philosophy students where a liar states that “everything I say is false”. If the liar is indeed lying, then he must be telling the truth, which means that the liar is lying. There may be some confused liars out there on 7 July. See also the puzzle at the end of this feature. 10th July sees a double celebration. Cow Appreciation day reminds us how integral cows are to our daily lives , at least to those of us who are yet to adopt a vegan lifestyle. Also falling on this day is Don’t Step on a Bee Day. Quite right too although we have probably said enough about these splendid insects elsewhere in this issue. 14th July is Shark Awareness day. It is estimated that 100 million of these extraordinary predators are killed by humans each year, most often for their fins to be made into soup. We actually need sharks to maintain the ocean ecosystem by keeping smaller prey species in check and thus helping to preserve the aquatic vegetation that releases oxygen into the marine environment. The Jaws movies have an awful lot to answer for. 21st July is Junk food Day. What were they thinking of? Good news, I suppose, for all fans of ‘food’ high in fats, sugars, salt and calories and containing little nutritional value. 27th July sees an intriguing trio of Take Your Houseplant for a Walk Day, Walk on Stilts day and Scotch Whisky Day. For those intent on some serious commemorating on this day, probably the best thing is to roll all three into one,. First consume a few drams of selected single malts – perhaps a smooth Speyside followed by a smoky, peaty Islay would do nicely. Then grab a favourite houseplant under your arm, hop up on your stilts and parade yourself along Cublington High street, (NB the Crier can accept no liability for personal injury or loss or damage to third parties or property resulting from attempting such a temerarious stunt).

20 AMAZING HONEY BEE FACTS!

DID YOU KNOW…

• Honey bees must gather nectar from two million flowers to make one pound of honey. • One bee has to fly about 90,000 miles – three times around the globe – to make one pound of honey. • The average bee will make only 1/12th of a teaspoon of honey in its lifetime. • A honey bee visits 50 to 100 flowers during a collection trip. • A honey bee can fly for up to six miles, and as fast as 15 miles per hour. • The bee’s brain is oval in shape and about the size of a sesame seed, yet it has a remarkable capacity to learn and remember things. For example, it is able to make complex calculations on distance travelled and foraging efficiency. • Honey bees communicate with one another by dancing. • A colony of bees consists of 20,000-60,000 honey bees and one queen. Worker honey bees are female, live for about 6 weeks and do all the work. • The queen bee can live up to 5 years and is the only bee that lays eggs. She is the busiest in the summer months, when the hive needs to be at its maximum strength, and lays up to 2500 eggs per day. • Larger than the worker bees, the male honey bees (also called drones), have no stinger and do no work. All they do is mate. • Honey has always been highly regarded as a medicine. It is thought to help with everything from sore throats and digestive disorders to skin problems and hay fever. • Honey has antiseptic properties and was historically used as a dressing for wounds and a first aid treatment for burns and cuts. • The natural fruit sugars in honey – fructose and glucose – are quickly digested by the body. This is why sportsmen and athletes use honey to give them a natural energy boost. • Honey bees have been producing honey in the same way for 150 million years. • The honey bee is the only insect that produces food eaten by man. • Honey lasts an incredibly long time. An explorer who found a 2000 year old jar of honey in an Egyptian tomb said it tasted delicious! • The bees’ buzz is the sound made by their wings which beat 11,400 times per minute. • When a bee finds a good source of nectar it flies back to the hive and shows its friends where the nectar source is by doing a dance which positions the flower in relation to the sun and hive. This is known as the ‘waggle dance.’ • Honey’s ability to attract and retain moisture means that it has long been used as a beauty treatment. It was part of Cleopatra’s daily beauty ritual. • Honey is incredibly healthy and includes enzymes, vitamins, minerals. It’s the only food that contains “pinocembrin”, an antioxidant associated with improved brain functioning.
