Can YOU Escape the Room? Do you remember watching people solve puzzles on the Crystal Maze, thinking “I could do that”? Well now YOU can. Don’t Get Locked In is a brand new escape room experience near Leighton Buzzard, which takes you back to 1940’s England and challenges you to solve puzzles using clues to escape in 60 minutes, so no crystals but lots of fun and kudos if you make it out before the time runs out.

The Crier online...

Available at www.issuu.com

Do you remember the 21st night of September? Don’t worry, this is not a pop quiz – but if it was the question would be: what is the opening line to the Earth Wind and Fire hit, ‘September’? The song has been playing over and over in my head since I sat down to write this month’s editorial. As an earworm, it’s uplifting as it is catchy. It sings of cloudless days as we see out the end of summer. This year, the British summer has proved peerless. We’ve been spoilt with record temperatures and sapphire skies, while inviting guests over for a BBQs hasn’t held the same threat it has done in previous years. In the Keohane household, eating outside has become the norm and we’re hoping it remains warm enough to dine al fresco for a few more weeks yet. We will certainly have light. This year, the Harvest Moon is due on Monday 24th – one day after Autumn begins – and is so called because the setting sun is replaced by the early rising of moon, thus allowing farmers some extra light under which to harvest the last of their summer crops.

Phew! What a scorcher!

What a brilliant summer we've had, reliable sunshine, brilliant BBQ weather, all except for the poor gardens. But as I write this, the rain is pouring down bringing much needed relief to the parched earth. It seems that in future our summers may well be more like this. Bring it on I say!

The Fete Committee would like

to inform you that they have been able to donate funds to the following village organisations:

The seasonal glut is also the perfect excuse to get creative in the kitchen. In this issue, I have shared some of my favourite September recipes with the hope you will find an occasion to enjoy them; a final family meal before children head back to school and university or as a well done for parents who have made it through six weeks of summer holidays.

£1000 to St Nicholas Church, £1000 to friends of St Nicholas, £1000 to the Village Hall and £1000 to Orchard Ground (£700 cash and £300 worth of left over booze).

All the best ‘The Keohanes’

See you all next year!

Thank you all for your participation at the Fete this year and hope we can rely on your support next time!

Sunday 23rd June!

Thanks to Grace Gregory for the front cover design

To be the guest editor: You only have to design or find a front cover image, write an intro editorial of your choice and provide a few, or as many pages of content of your choice as you want. It's really not that bad or that hard. Go on please give it a go The more who do it - the less we have to ask. Thanks. Contact: Sandie Joy 01296 682446

The Greatest Showman – Open Air Cinema Was a Fun-draising event organised by Orchard Ground Committee The open air cinema was an exciting new idea for a joint fundraising event with Orchard Ground and Whitchurch Combined School. Tickets sold really well and people flooded in; 295 to be exact! There was a real buzz in the air; the barbeque team never stopped flipping burgers and the bar had to send out for more booze. Sparkly faces began to appear as if by magic thanks to the enterprising youngsters on the face painting stall. Darkness approached and excitement mounted (several times); unfortunately the company providing the cinema experience had to evict some gremlins from their projector and steady the wobbly screen but once The Greatest Showman was underway the quality of the sight and sound was excellent. What a brilliant film; great story, great music and fabulous feelgood factor. If only we could have controlled the weather. After weeks of non stop heatwave, we caught the passing rain. Who would have thought! Despite the damp, we raised a whopping total of £1,895.49 which was shared equally between Orchard Ground and Whitchurch Combined School. (The school are currently raising funds to support 5 year old pupil, Georgia Paul, who was recently diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumour. If you were not able to make it on the night please feel free to help Georgia with a donation on the justgiving site https:www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/teamgeorgia ) A huge thanks to everyone who supported the event and especially super generous sponsor of the barbeque burgers, Vernon Cox. It’s very much appreciated. Orchard Ground Committee

1.What did you want to be when you grew up? I knew aged 4 years what I wanted to be and followed that career in the NHS passionately all my working life. 2.What was your first job? My first job aged 15 years was a Saturday girl for a local chemist shop. My first task of the day, to my youthful embarrassment, was sweeping the pavement outside the shop. 3.Who (alive or dead) would you like to have dinner with and why? (You can have more than one!) My dinner guests would be Dame Judy Dench, a younger version of Richard Gere, I am a sucker for “Pretty Woman”. Mahatma Ghandi and the Arch Bishop of Canterbury envoy Terry Waite, plus throw into the mix Germaine Greer. 4.What historical era would you like to have lived in and why? It would be the 50’s but with all modern conveniences in the home. I love the retro styles and cars, and big full skirts. 5.Where would you want to live if not where you live now and why? I love living in Cublington, just need to locate it to warmer climes in the winter, I hate the long cold dark months. 6.What is your favourite band and why? Dire Straits. I love Mark K’s guitar riffs. Also holds bittersweet memories. 7.What is the pet hate that makes your hackles rise? Anti-social behaviour – littering, fly tipping and generally polluting the environment. We need to conserve our planet for future generations. 8. What is the unlikely interest that engages your curiosity? I try to practise mindfulness and thankfulness. My goal is to perform a random act of kindness each day. So watch out it may be you! 9. How long have you lived in Cublington? A few years now.

Answer somewhere in the Crier.

From the Reverend Dear friends, The Summer break can be a time I read a good book or possibly revisit an old favourite. Someone once said there are only 'good books', 'indifferent books' and 'bad books' but I agree with the reviewer in 1974 who said there are also 'ah! books'. One of the great 'ah! book's I've revisited this year is Mister God This Is Anna by an unknown and unidentified author called Fynn. It is a magical story of the unlikely friendship between a feisty little girl called Anna who has a funny, slightly irreverent relationship with God and Fynn a sort of man of the road/ tramp who is completely blown away by Anna's energy and deep instinctive understanding of all things spiritual.

The book achieves that wonderful combination of hysterical humour and tear-jerking pathos and great profundity. As well as great writing the book is beautifully illustrated by the cartoonist Papas. Set in the East End, post WWII, a newspaper review of the time said this: 'Few can fail to be charmed by the magical quality of the child. The enchanting drawings are a splendid bonus to a beautifully produced book'. I wish you well if you are hunting for an 'ah! book' God bless, Philip. Reverend Philip Derbyshire

The Unicorn has its own golf society (TUGS), drawn from an eclectic bunch of regular and occasional patrons. You are warmly invited to join TUGS and please don’t worry, any standard of golfing prowess is welcome – there is no fee to join. Just as we receive great local support at The Unicorn, we like to support local courses, so all 4 meetings are at local clubs with one different course each year. The format is always individual stableford (full handicap, max 24 for men and 36 for ladies) and Members will compete for the TUGS trophy at each meeting. There will be a special prize for the person who has accumulated the highest aggregate of stableford points (best 3 rounds out of 4) which will be awarded after the final meeting of the year.

Main Contact: cublingtonpc.clerk@gmail.com Minutes of a meeting of Cublington Parish Council held on 10th July 2018 in Village Hall at 7.30pm Present: Cllr H Vale (Chairman) Cllr G Antosiewicz Cllr J Merriman Cllr S Morgan Cllr M Reilly Cllr N Glover (part) In attendance: Mr M Joy (Clerk)

1. Apologies None

2. Minutes of last meeting The minutes of the last meeting held on 1st May 2018 were discussed by the meeting and duly signed by the Chairman.

3. Reports Neighbourhood Policing Team The monthly Neighbourhood Policing Newsletter for June had been circulated by Mr M Joy before the meeting and will be posted on the Village website. Weekly Neighbourhood Reports will be posted regularly. Aylesbury Vale District Council and Buckinghamshire County Council (Cllr Netta Glover) Freight Strategy –A four-year action plan has been launched to look in detail at ways to solve lorry hotspot problems and better manage freight around Buckinghamshire's roads. Log onto Buckscc.gov.uk and look for Freight Strategy for full details. It comes with the approval of the County Council's new freight strategy by Mark Shaw, Deputy Leader and Transport Cabinet Member. At the centre of the action plan are proposals to set up freight focus groups in the County Council's 19 Local Area Forum areas, drawn from parishes, community groups and businesses. And one of the priorities is to appoint a Freight Officer to liaise between parishes, districts, businesses and County Hall, and manage focus groups. They will examine heavy goods vehicle (HGV) movement data, along with original strategy consultation feedback from more than 1,600 residents and businesses, to help identify areas that need targeted action and investment. This could include measures ranging from HGV route signs to installing noise and air quality measures, to liaising with neighbouring councils over HGV bans that affect Buckinghamshire. The first three focus groups will be set up during the coming weeks in the Wing/Ivinghoe area, the Iver/Denham area and the Haddenham/Waddesdon area. Others will be set up during the following nine months. Deputy Transport Cabinet Member Paul Irwin, who is overseeing the Action Plan, said it was vital the work that groups do help the County Council to strike a balance between getting goods and services around the county efficiently, and the impact on roads and the environment. "It's a fine balance. We rely on lorries to bring in our food and

drink, and take away the waste we produce," said Paul. "But we also have a responsibility to control the impact HGVs have on our roads and the environment." Around 17% of lorries coming into Buckinghamshire deliver foodstuffs and about 14% of HGV movements are related to taking away waste from residents and businesses in the county. The increase in online shopping - up 23 per cent in the past year - has pushed up the number of delivery van miles by 46% in the past 10 years and this trend is expected to continue. "When it comes to freight management nothing stands still," said Paul. "We're kidding ourselves if we think there's a fix-it-once-forall solution, which is why our freight strategy is a live document. We want focus groups to highlight local issues to help us consider the trends and the changing nature of HGV movements, so we can take the right decisions in the future to balance the need for the efficient distribution of goods and services with the needs of Buckinghamshire’s environment and residents. "A huge number of residents and business people have helped get Buckinghamshire's Freight Strategy Bucks residents achieve impressive increase in food waste recycling A campaign running since summer 2017 which aims to encourage people to recycle more food waste appears to have borne fruit. Rotten fruit, and mouldy veg. And used tea-bags. And broken egg shells; chicken bones; banana skins, coffee grounds…. In the six months from October to March, an extra 639 tonnes of food waste was recycled in Buckinghamshire compared to the same period the previous year. On average that’s an extra 2.9kgs of food waste from every household in the county The Fighting Food Waste campaign is run by the Waste Partnership for Buckinghamshire (WPB), which is made up of the four district councils which collect household waste and Buckinghamshire County Council which disposes of it. The campaign has funding from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government. By using advertising, social media, and direct contact with residents, it aims to get people who already recycle food waste to do it more, and to get other residents to start for the first time. A Love Food Hate Waste section on the Recycle for Buckinghamshire website (www.recycle4bucks.co.uk) gives tips on making the most of leftovers and reducing waste, but some food waste is unavoidable. By recycling as much of it as possible through the dedicated weekly kerbside collections carried out by the districts, the waste can be turned into energy by a process of anaerobic digestion (AD). In Bucks, food waste is sent for processing in AD plants at Westcott (Bucks) and Wallingford (Oxon). At the AD plants, the food waste is digested by bacteria in special tanks to produce methane-rich biogas - which is used as fuel to generate electricity - and a chemical-free fertiliser that can be used by farmers to enrich their soil. AD is far more cost efficient than sending food waste to the county’s Energy from Waste (EfW) site at Greatmoor where other non-recyclable waste is sent. In Bucks, around 16,000 tonnes of food waste are collected from

homes each year, but there is still more to be done to reduce food waste, and to recycle unavoidable waste. People with Learning Difficulties An estimated 1,200 people with a learning disability die from preventable illness every year. On average women with a learning disability die 18 years sooner, and men with a learning disability die 14 years sooner than the general population in England. That's why this Learning Disability week (18-24 June) events are happening across the country to focus on improving healthcare for people with a learning disability. As part of the county's 'Transforming Care Partnership' group; GP's, the County Council, Buckinghamshire Clinical Commissioning Group, and many other health and social care professionals in Buckinghamshire are backing Learning Disability Week by encouraging anyone with a learning disability or autism to register with their GP for an Annual Health Check. Dr Sian Roberts, Mental Health and Learning Disability Clinical Director, said: "Annual Health checks are one way of making sure that people with a learning disability stay as healthy as possible. The checks can pick up early signs of a problem, and even prevent problems arising in the first place. It's easy to arrange just contact your surgery and ask how you can make an appointment for this important health check. "We know that there are over 6,000 people in Buckinghamshire that have a learning disability, yet around only 2,000 are accessing services. So if you, or someone you know has a learning disability - even if you are not already receiving health or social care - please make sure you stay that way by looking after your health and registering for a FREE Annual Health Check.

6.1 Charitable status and possible transfer of assets: The BALC lawyers have sent through a letter concerning the potential transfer of property and the meeting went through this letter. There are several matters that needed to be clarified before any transfer.

The main point was to clarify that there were no restrictions on the bequest of the property from the Biggs family. Mr Joy and Cllr Vale agreed to review the will to confirm the position. The questions the lawyers did not answer were : is there any stamp duty land tax arising on the transfer and any tax liability upon the Council. NEWS FROM THE RIVER THAME CONSERVATION TRUST Earlier in the year, individuals, groups and communities were enlisted to find clean, unpolluted water in the River Thame Catchment as part of the Clean Water Quest survey. During May and June, volunteers collected and tested water samples from over 450 sites across the catchment, from the River Thame itself as it meanders its way past Aylesbury to Dorchester on Thames, and its surrounding waterbodies, headwaters, streams and ponds. Volunteers used simple test kits to measure the levels of two widespread nutrient pollutants, nitrate and phosphate. The findings revealed high levels of both nitrate and phosphate across all habitat types. However, despite the many pressures on the landscape, clean water could still be found, with 16% of sites being free of pollution. Of those sites, almost three quarters were ponds. Clean water was also found in the running water, but it was concentrated in the headwaters, particularly where they rise in semi-natural habitat, such as woodland. If you would like to view the results in more detail, please visit www.riverthame.org/volunteering/ clean-water-quest/.

The Clean Water Quest survey has highlighted the importance of smaller waters in providing clean unpolluted water, essential for much of our wildlife, and how vital it is to extend this clean water network. This can be achieved through clean water pond creation, and can be as simple as creating a rain water fed garden pond or as grand as a creating a large wetland complex. Big or small, all clean water creation is valuable. It is only through the power of citizen science that this extensive survey could be undertaken. If you would like to take part in future water quality testing, and contribute to improvements in the water quality of our local river, please contact hannah@riverthame.org for more information.

CUBLINGTON REMEMBERS

Armistice Weekend

9th - 11th November, Memorabilia Exhibition in St Nicholas Church. We would like to display any memorabilia you have: photos, stories (we can print them up on posters), information about WW1 and WW2 from Cublington and from people who now live in Cublington... the stories may be from anywhere, it is still relevant and will become local history. Curators for this event - Gina Reilly ginareilly@aol.com and Diane Grace dijgrace@gmail.com Flower Festival - volunteers to decorate windows and church are required please. poppies can be supplied We aim to have the church open for the 3 days, and have tea/coffee etc available, so any additional help on site during this time would be most welcome!

Sad to report...

The barn owl box had 5 cold eggs in it this year, the heatwave during the summer had prevented the owls from feeding well, so there are no chicks this year.

KEEPING BACKACHE AT BAY FOR KIDS Does your child ever complain of backache? Do you just put it down to growing pains or one of those things that will pass? There are numerous reasons why children may develop backache or pain but some of the causes could easily be avoided. Studies have shown that 30% of school age children get back and neck pain*. Don’t let your child be a statistic - here are some easy tips to help your child get into good habits for later life: School bags - rucksacks are best or those with a wide adjustable strap worn across the body to distribute the weight better. Adjust straps so that they keep the bag close to the body and not hanging down the back of the legs.

Packing – put the heaviest things at the bottom and closest to the spine to help the back muscles cope better with the weight. Posture – get your child to stand tall when carrying a bag and take care to lift their bag properly to avoid increasing strain on the back by bending their knees and lifting the bag close to them. Size - big is not necessary best; they should be right for your child’s size and tell them to pack just what they need for that day only. School lockers - are not always available but if they are, get your children to leave their heavy PE kits and cooking materials etc in there instead of lugging around in their bag between lessons. *Association of Paediatric Chartered Physiotherapists 2012.
