Editorial Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness, Close bosom-friend of the maturing sun; Conspiring with him how to load and bless With fruit the vines that round the thatch-eves run; To bend with apples the moss’d cottage-trees, And fill all fruit with ripeness to the core; To swell the gourd, and plump the hazel shells With a sweet kernel; to set budding more, And still more, later flowers for the bees, Until they think warm days will never cease, For Summer has o’er-brimm’d their clammy cells. 1/3rd poem by John Keates As autumn draws to a close and winter sets in, we can look forward to those frosty mornings where our beautiful landscape comes into its own. There is a cosiness at this time of year, with the anticipation of the festivities that are about to be thrust on us, we still have the luxury of time to prepare. Life can get very hectic this time of year but perhaps we should pause and just take pleasure in the simple things in life. In this November edition we have included some of the ideas for the North field which are currently being submitted as part of the plans for the creation of a recreational wood for all in the village next to the cricket ground

As you sit in at home in the cosy warmth, the harvest complete and the cupboards full, outside, an old man,

red of cheek, is putting out the summer fire. He sits on top of the motte at the end of the village and has been keeping the cold at bay for many months. When the last embers die out, the days start retreating and nights

become longer. Frost starts creeping across the landscape, once again killing everything to sleep in its path. Villagers shelter in The Unicorn huddled together against the cold months ahead. Winter is upon us.

A TIME TO REMEMBER AND REFLECT AT THE 2019 TREE OF LIGHT EVENTS

Florence Nightingale Hospice Charity has announced details of their 2019 Tree of Light commemoration events. The Charity recognises Christmas can be a very emotional occasion and hosts two Tree of Light events which are open to all, regardless of religion or spirituality, and whether or not your loved one was cared for at the Hospice or elsewhere. “The Tree of Light events are designed to give people a space where a part of the season is set aside to remember and reflect on loved ones,” says Ann Kenny, the Bereavement Support Team Lead at the Hospice. “Christmas can often be a time of conflicting emotions, or it can be so busy that those who are grieving can’t find a time to process feelings of sadness which may come to the fore at this time of year.” This year’s Aylesbury Tree of Light event has moved indoors for 2019 and will take place at Aylesbury High School on Walton Road on Sunday 1st December at 5pm. It will also have a change of format, with more secular readings and music, rather than carols and prayers. “We are aware that many of our families are not Christians and may prefer something less religious but still thoughtful and meditative,” says Vicky James, Events and Community Manager. “There are lots of other poems and readings which bring comfort, and beautiful music apart from carols, so we are trying something new to see what people think.” The Buckingham Tree of Light event will take place on Saturday 14th December from 5pm at St Peter and St Paul’s Church, Castle Street and will retain its more traditional feel, with prayers, readings and carols, so the Charity hopes that there is something for everyone in the two events.

A big thanks to Orchard Ground The old heavy tables in Orchard Ground have been replaced and in the spirit of community we wanted them to go to a good home. They have been donated to SOFEA a fareshare charity providing food to charities and food banks. They have just opened new premises in MK near the stadium. What is even more important is that this warehouse and food distribution company is made up of young people with a range of complex needs and barriers. The warehouse serves as both employer and learning space. The tables are now part of the canteen area and look pretty smart in their new home. Thanks Cublington!

Keep up the good work Several emails received thanking the Crier team for all their hard work in producing and distributing the Crier every month... Thanks - much appreciated. Ed Why do people do it?!!!!! On walking back from the Stewkley direction we noticed the disgusting amount of litter on the sides of the road. Armed with carrier bags we decided we would do our bit for the community and pick up what we could. Between the ‘Concorde’ spinney and Orchard Ground we picked up over 90 (yes ninety) empty cans and 10 bottles, plus plastic bottles and general rubbish. A kindly villager stopped and loaded it all into their car to bring back to the their recycling bins. Why do people do it? Answers on a postcard please. A couple of irritated villagers. Good question! Time for another community clear up?! Not even six months since the last one! Ed

The Unicorn Rather sad to see the Unicorn dark and quiet on most weekday evenings but heartening news in the recent Crier that new management may soon be in place to keep the beating heart of the village going. Thanks to the George’s for all their efforts and hard work in the last 10 or so years. Your village thanks you for your great community spirit in keeping this valued institution going for so long. Anonymous Wild Flower verges I read with interest in the PC minutes the proposal to sow wild flowers around the pond. Why stop there?... all along the hedge behind the Valerie memorial bench would be another ideal place! Whole verges in Drayton Parslow looked absolutely great! What a fantastic idea whoever suggested it! Surely extra marks in the Best Kept Village next year! Ed

Letters & articles for the Crier most welcome: info@cublingtoncrier.co.uk

Ideas from the Village

Development

• A simple low-cost plan with low maintenance. A modular approach to match the ambitions and resources available in the village with wide variety of facilities to appeal to all ages in the village with woodland and open areas for all to enjoy • A mixed woodland with traditional local trees such as oak, beech, pine and lime to include a hazel coppice wood as well as fruit and nut trees. Some specimen trees including walnut, mulberry … • Open long grass areas with wild flowers and some wild herbs at the edges for all walkers (dog poo bags at the ready!) • A 1-meter wide path around the field, 500m long with a straight alley of trees 100m long with views over the vale. Linked to a narrow windy path into the field/wood which extends the walk to 0.5 miles

Saw this article in The Week magazine and thought it might spark a debate. We should absolutely make sure we plant disease free trees and species not currently at threat. Apparently Sweet Chestnut is resistant to the leaf miner moth. Perhaps we should be planting some of the rarer indiginous varieties of the locality such as Black Poplar?? See below. Ed

Wild flowers

The Black poplar is native to north-west Europe. A declining species in the UK, it is rare and grows in isolation. It is most prevalent in Shropshire, Cheshire, Somerset and East Anglia and grows best in boggy conditions, near ditches and floodplains. I’m told there is one on a field margin of Long Ground - one of the Vale’s fields down towards the stream. Ed

• Orchard Ground and Charitable Trust status The North Field returned to the control of OG at the end of September. A gate will be installed for the benefit of dog walkers and villagers. Charlie 1999-2019 Charlie lived an eventful life. He originally came from Argentina, as a polo pony and for his first few years in the UK, lived in top polo yards. He bore the scars of some vicious play. Once he lost his speed, he moved on, into the sport of Polocrosse, which although just as fast, is less risky to the horse and he settled into new yards with new owners. At no point, during these years, was he a 'pet', he was a sports horse and treated as such. He joined us, as Peter's 18th Birthday present, and for the first time he was appreciated for who he was, rather than a tool. It took time for him to learn to relax and enjoy fuss. He tolerated traffic on the road, and skateboards whizzing past on the pavement...but wheelie bins with rubbish on the top were scary. He and Peter played Polocrosse (at Pony Club Championships and as part of the Chiltern Polo-x team) and undertook Endurance rides (also for the Pony Club). He and Peter were a team, and his loss is felt deeply. Thank you to everyone who helped, following his sudden death, while we were away, especially Hannah Alexander. Jane and Peter

1.What did you want to be when you grew up? A film star, show jumper, ballerina, professional tennis player … 2.What was your first job? Fruit picking during school summer holidays and helping out in family garage business – the smell of petrol brings back happy memories! 3.Who alive or dead would you like to have dinner with and why? Victoria Wood and Pam Ayres. Sparkling company and with entertainment thrown in! 4. What historical era would you liked to have lived in and why? The Regency period of Jane Austen’s novels – love those empire line dresses. 5. Where would you like to live if not where you live now and why? Alderney in the Channel Islands. We spent many happy family holidays there and it is still relatively quiet and unspoilt. 6. What is the temptation you wish you could resist? Anything with nuts in, particularly Ferrero Rocher and chocolate brazils. 7. What is your favourite book and why? I am an avid reader and impossible to pick one book but recently enjoyed The Seven Sisters series by Lucinda Riley. 8. What is your favourite song and why? ‘A Whiter Shade of Pale’ by Procol Harum. I was fortunate enough to be a teenager in the Swinging Sixties when the best popular music was produced. Nowadays, anything sung by a Welsh Male Voice Choir gives me goose-bumps. 9.What is the pet hate that makes your hackles rise? Where to begin – fly tipping and litter louts, road rage, bad manners, dog fouling, grumpy old men … 10. What is the unlikely interest that engages your curiosity? I love antiques and collect novelty teapots and presently have over 30 in my collection. 11. How long have you lived in Cublington? 38 years.

Answer somewhere in the Crier.

Between them, the trustee team will have a range of skills including, project management, a knowledge of charity management, grant funding, woodland and conservation; also an interest in the future development of the facilities of Orchard Ground for the benefit of the residents of Cublington. Are there any more villagers who would like to volunteer to act as a trustee? From the Reverend Dear friends, A year ago we were commemorating the end of WWI, the war that was going ‘to end all wars’. 70 years ago we entered into yet more hell with the start of WWII. But that isn’t the whole story of that 20 year gap. 1919 saw more wars than we’d seen for ages... Russia in the middle of a civil war, war between Hungary and Romania, 3rd.Anglo-Afghan War, Turkish War of Independence, Irish War of Independence plus at least three other European/middle eastern conflicts!

There are really warm, loving, practically caring people around but they are so easily overlooked in all the noise and clamour. November 19th marks the feast of St.Hilda of Whitby who lived in the 7th century and she called together the leaders of the northern (Celtic) and southern (Roman) Churches to try and settle the date of Easter for all the Church in England. Seems crazy to us today that this should be the cause of conflict but our clashes would probably seem equally mad to them!

2019 is no better, with all sorts of horrendous wars going on on every continent. What is it with humanity and warfare? Some of it is about greed and control of resources, need for ethnic domination: hate/fear? Just occasionally a moral or ethical principle has a bearing on the situation.

As we remember all victims of war, military and civilian, let us all pray and work for better solutions.

As someone once said ‘if war is the answer it must have been a really stupid question’!

God Bless,

All this of course is only one side of the story.

Reverend Philip Derbyshire

All I know is that Jesus did not believe in violence as the solution to any issue and neither did any other religious leader worthy of the name.

dates for your diary PLEASE let us know of any event in the village you are running. If we don't know about it we can't help publicise it. By the 15th of every month before please.

As the event date is nearing Christmas the theme will be a Sparkling Wine/Champagne tasting night. The joining fee is £5 per person and the cost for the wine tasting on this occasion will be £15 per head (normal sessions are £10 per head). The evening starts at 7:15 pm for a prompt 7:30 pm start and the session lasts around 2 hours or so. You don’t need to be a wine buff to join us but just enjoy a good time and a chance to try some wines that you would not normally buy or taste. If you are interested in joining the “Cublington Winos” group, either send an email to cublingtonwinos@gmail.com or give Kevin or Chris Shults a call on 01296-680417 and we will explain more about the evening. Cheers

HARVEST SUPPER ank you to all those who supported the Harvest Th Supper. A special thank you to Tom Gadsby for acting as auctioneer. Thanks to his persuasive powers, the SEEKING INTEREST evening made £305 for church funds. Before putting Holly Tree Cottage, Stewkley Road on the market, we wondered if there was any interest within the village. Recently refurbished cottage: 4 double bedrooms and 3 reception rooms. Open plan kitchen/diner. Contact Number: 07867 976152

The Aston Abbotts & Cublington Ladies Club

The club meets at the Village Hall in Aston Abbott’s on the third Thursday of every month at 2.30pm. We are a jolly group and enjoy talks on a variety of things interspersed with quizzes, bring and buys, garden parties, outings and more. Our afternoons end with tea and cakes and a raffle. Please come along and see if you like us. Our next meeting is on November 21st when a representative from Wiltshire Farm Foods will be coming to tell us about the company and bringing some samples for us to try. Please come along, ladies and chaps, to try them out and see if you like the idea of joining our club. Our December meeting will actually be on the 12th December, the second Thursday of the month, so as not to clash with another event taking place on 19th December. This meeting takes the form of a short Carol Service followed by afternoon tea provided by the Ladies of the Club. If you are thinking of possibly joining the club you would be most welcome to join us but please let me know for catering purposes. ( My telephone number is 01296707833) I look forward to hearing from you.

CUBLINGTON PANTO

TO PUT IT VERY SIMPLY!

New faces are needed or the great tradition of the Panto in Cublington will come to an end THIS SEASON . Come on people of CUBLINGTON, you can do this. All are welcome. It’s fun and lifts the spirit to do something outside your comfort zone. We need new members in all areas. Handy men, women, painters, make-up, dress makers. MOST of all we need people on the stage! Do please contact Gerry Griffiths on 01296 681666 or come along to our next meeting in the Village Hall 8pm on 7th and then on the 14th of November. You never know, you may actually ENJOY IT! Gerry

your panto needs you!

The Cublington Sign Someone asked me the other day what is going on with the Cublington Sign? After the criticism in the Best Kept Village report, it prompted me to act. I am in the process of renovating the sign over the next few months. The cover is to protect the carved wood from the winter storms while I gradually remove the old varnish and reapply a suitable wood preserver. I will endeavour to do it as quick as I can but as always, I have a lot on - like producing this publication every month. Gary

Cublington christmas CHOIR Rehearsals begin for the choir on Monday 11 November and every Monday thereafter until the Carol Service on 22 December. All sessions will be at St Nicholas Church from 7.30pm-8.15pm Do please come and join in, it’s always good fun and you do not need to consider yourself a good singer, just keen. If you sing in the shower or the car then this is for you. We generally learn two or three carols which we sing as a choir and also practice the carols that we will sing with the congregation. The choir has also been invited to sing at a village wedding on 11 January for which the bride and groom will make a generous donation to Friends of St Nicholas so we will be learning a couple of contemporary songs for that. PUB Update The Unicorn has new tenants from the 28th October. We are not clear what the new tenants have planned but we have it on good authority that after refurbishment of the interior, they will open for business on 15th November. Like us, you will be relieved to know the future of the pub is safe for the foreseeable future. Thank you to the many of you who have supported and sustained The Unicorn over the last 15 years. We are sure the incoming tenants will need and can count on your continuing support. We wish them all the best. Chris & Steve George
