We are looking into the possibility of reprinting the book - "Cublington in Pictures Old and New" If you would like a copy having missed out before, (first published in 2013) or if you are new to the village and would like one, then please let us know so we can gauge demand. It's a fascinating pictorial history of the village compiled and written by the late Roy Smith and really is a must have for all villagers with any sort of connection to Cublington.

November 2018 and the culmination of the Cublington Crafters' efforts.

Did you spot the error?

We started 18 months ago, meeting in the Unicorn, learning to crochet or knit, and producing a pile of poppies, to make garlands to decorate the trees in the churchyard, on the centenary of the 1918 Armistice.

Don't forget

Many of our group were crochet novices, and weeks were spent, perfecting the techniques. As time went by, we expanded our skills and the poppy production line was joined with knitting, needle felting and wet felting (ok, not in the Unicorn...at home!) Once we reached 650 poppies, we started sewing them to the black cord, and these will be up in the High Street, with enough to share with the Crossroads trees. There are more poppies being made so the final total will be over 700. The ideas for the weekend expanded and the Parish Council applied for a WW1 cut-out to display. The arrangements for us joining in the national Beacon Lighting became fixed and the 9am Sunday Service with Rev Peter Binns was confirmed. A display of memorabilia and stories from the First and Second World Wars will be open, in the church, over the Armistice weekend (Friday to Sunday). Some memories will be local - others will be from local people, as we all bring our own family tales to the banquet and this can form an archive for the future. The Beacon Lighting, the Service of Remembrance, the Cabaret evening all bring our village together, to remember the anniversary, and to strengthen the unity that we share in this very special place. Dear Editor I cannot believe the carnage seen down the Wing Road as the Lakeside business units have absolutely decimated the hedgerow and put up an abomination of a blue metal fence. This surely appears to be a cynical attempt to ride roughshod over the planning laws as their application for retrospective planning for access has been refused. Are people allowed to get away with this? I sincerely hope not. Make them take the blue fence down I say and make reparations for their wanton vandalism. !!! Outraged of Cublington !!!

Wednesday 21st November AGM at 2000 at The Biggs Pavilion

Good News… Good News… Good News Confirmation has been received from WREN of a grant for £28,846.76 for the refurbishment of the Biggs Pavilion kitchen at Orchard Ground. Members of the Orchard Ground committee have been working to secure a grant from WREN to replace the kitchen which was installed back in 1998 when the pavilion was built. Many residents contributed to the consultation about a new kitchen and came forward with their ideas. A new kitchen will add greatly to the facilities in the pavilion which is used for many social and community activities and for sports including, cricket, tennis and table tennis. In addition to the grant, Orchard Ground will need to put some £4,000 towards the cost of the kitchen refurbishment. It is hoped that the necessary work will take place in January/ February 2019 and be completed by the end of March. WREN is a not for profit business that awards grants for community, heritage and biodiversity projects from funds donated by FCC Environmental through the Landfill Community Fund.

Cublington Brisk Walkers explore... Opened in September 2018, the Waddesdon Greenway offers a new, safe 4 km pedestrian and cycling path that links Aylesbury Vale Parkway with Waddesdon and Waddesdon Manor. Funded by the Cycle Rail Working Group and the Department of Transport, the Greenway is part of a scheme to connect rural communities to their nearest rail station. Set away from the A41 it follows a route that coincides largely with the old Roman road and offers a wide smooth path suitable for walkers, cyclists and wheelchair users. In true pioneering spirit, Cublington’s Brisk Walkers decided to give it a go and extended the route along established footpaths to make a 5 – 6 mile circular walk from Waddesdon Manor car park. With only one quite busy road to cross, it proved to be a really pleasant, traffic free hike across beautiful countryside. The Greenway section is an easy, mud free route dotted with some interesting, sculptural seating areas which offer the chance to rest awhile, take in the scenery, think about lunch or photograph your friends.

OSTEOPOROSIS & PILATES Our bone density continues to grow until our mid 20’s, however, after the age of 35, and following the menopause in women, the pattern changes. 1 in 3 women and 1 in 5 men over the age of 50 will develop osteopenic (loss of bone) fractures. We can make a change for the better - weight-bearing exercises 3-5 times per week, and resistance/strength exercise 2-3 times a week, have been shown to increase bone mass density (BMD) by stimulating bone growth. Balance-focused exercise have been shown to reduce a person’s risk of falls by 25%. Pilates can offer all the above benefits to people with osteopenia (low BMD but not as low as osteoporosis.) A 2015 study (E Angin) showed that people who participated in Pilates saw an increase in their BMD as well as improvements in their physical performance and quality of life. Pilates, the mind-body conditioning programme, can be used to strengthen your core (back and tummy) muscles and can also be adapted to do in standing to help ‘load’ the bones. Choose a fully qualified and registered Pilates instructor – the APPI Pilates instructors at St Judes are also Chartered Physiotherapists who carry out clinical rehab Pilates – participants in our small group classes and 1:1 sessions are fully assessed before starting an exercise programme specific to their needs.

Other ways you can help yourself include: 1. Eat a varied diet rich in calcium - dairy products, tofu and spinach are all good. 2. Reduce your caffeine and salt and stop smoking as all of these can interfere with the absorption of calcium in our bodies. If you are worried about your bone density speak to your GP.

Dear Editor Something that I think would be useful, is that when details of events etc are published, there are more details for people less familiar with the village or who live elsewhere. An example would be the Armistice tribute at the Mound - including a map or directions would be helpful. On a separate point I was pleased to see that the advent windows will take place again this year. I enjoyed taking the children around last year. Kind regards Natalie Sheridan Good idea - how's this? - Ed.

1. What did you want to be when you grew up? Over 6 foot! 2. What was your first job? First paying job was as a paperboy, though first real job was as a Trainee Art Director at JWT (London). 3. Who (alive or dead) would you like to have dinner with and why? JFK to see if he really was that charismatic. Leonardo Da Vinci as he had such a brilliant mind and JK Rowling as her imagination and life story seem just so amazing. 4. What historical era would you like to have lived in and why? This one is just fine thank you. I have seen more than enough change to last a lifetime. We have witnessed such technological progress in my working life. In the late 1980's, I bought one of the first printer/copier/scanners and it cost me £3000! Now they retail for about £30 !! And my first mobile phone was attached to the car it was that big! Now your mobile has more computing power than was aboard the Apollo spacecraft that sent man to the moon! The future is actually quite exciting. 5. Where would you want to live if not where you live now and why? It's currently very tempting to go and live on a remote island somewhere cut off from all modern communications and social media but that's somewhat unrealistic as we'd have to have internet for face-timing with the family! Oh and Sky for all the sport I love to watch! 6. What is the temptation you wish you could resist? Crisps and nuts, chocolate, alcohol, where do you want me to stop?! 7. What is your favourite book and why? Boringly predictable I guess but any crime/thriller - James Patterson is always a good read. 8. What is your favourite song and why? Too many to mention - but my iPod seems to have a predominately female bias. 9. What is the pet hate that makes your hackles rise? Drivers who think they own the road and seem to have never read the Highway Code, let alone follow it! 10. What is the unlikely interest that engages your curiosity? Art History - as I absolutely hated it at school. It was a real chore. 11. How long have you lived in Cublington. 24 years this last summer but somehow it seems much longer!

From the Reverend

Dear friends, Memory is such an important faculty, although it of course has it's up and down sides. Memories of special places, loved people, pets, great concerts, favourite meals and so much more can truly enrich our lives. And of course the older we get the greater our store of memories is and possibly the greater benefit we gain from them. Not all memories however are pleasant and nurturing or good for our well-being: early traumas also stick with us and can make us vulnerable on occasion. I remember being rescued from a burning flat in Portsmouth when I was barely two year's old and being pulled out of the sea at Brighton at six year's of age. The rest of my childhood was pretty quiet I'm glad to say! This month we have a very special remembrance: one hundred years since the end of WWI. A war which was supposed to last four months in the

FR

CU

end lasted four and a quarter years, with the most appalling slaughter in Europe and the Middle East on no less than a dozen separate fronts. We meet this year in thousands of communities worldwide to celebrate the end of hostilities, if only it could have been truly 'the war to end all wars'. Remembrance is a particularly important word/concept within Christianity, especially remembering through what Jesus has given us in the Eucharist, the Holy Communion. A powerful and moving memory of what He has done for us on the cross at Calvary, dying and rising for love of the whole of creation. As you maybe take some time this November to remember those who gave their all. May God bless you and yours. God Bless, Reverend Philip Derbyshire

IENDS OF

BLINGTON

Thank you all so much for help with the mowing this year... The lawnmower is off for a refurb, thank you all so much for your efforts, the churchyard looked immaculate and the judges at the best kept village thought so too and gave it a ten. If you would like to be added to the list of helpers please get in touch on 682787 or royshons@btinternet.com God Bless, Roy

Could you please help keep up the good work? Call Roy to book your slot on next year's rota!

Dartmoor Letterboxing..... Geocaching..... No, it's BENCHMARKS Did you know that we have 4....no, 5! Ordinance Survey Benchmarks in Cublington.... No, neither did we, until Monica, from Sheffield came to visit. Benchmarks are marks made on buildings, bridges, gateposts, rocks that have an exact height above sea level measured and recorded, according to the OS files. They are like the concrete Trig Points, on the top of hills and mountains, but far harder to locate. Many have not been checked and reported for years but there are many amateur Benchmarkers, located over the country, crosschecking old maps, lists and documents and then going out to find the mark, photograph and re-record the details, via the OS site and Facebook. Many of these marks stem from Victorian times, and they have been added to up until the 1960s. (Once geo-satellites became active, the benchmarking records were redundant!) The original list of 4 from the OS site were checked in May, two are on buildings, 2 on culverts. In October, Monica's research of maps from Scotland, yielded a 5th site, on the church and this has now been verified and logged. Can you find the Benchmarks? See if you can spot them! The buildings are at either end of the village and the marks are visible from the road. Old House, on the High Street facing High Street Old Manor Cottage, facing Wing Road

Cublington Crafters

A small, welcoming group that meet in the Unicorn, Friday afternoons, 3.30 - 5pm each week.

Endurance Riding and Polocrosse The two ginger ponies, that can be seen in the fields near the church have jobs to do, during the summer. Charlie is Peter's Polocrosse pony. Originally an Argentinean Polo-pony, he was transferred to polocrosse and changed homes frequently, before he joined Shaz, in Cublington. It took several years for him to relax, and accept that he has a 'family' here. Polocrosse is 'lacrosse-on-horseback', played in teams of 3, and riders need good balance, good racquet skills and a pony they trust. Look at a match on You-tube and get a feel for the game! Shatzar discovered a flare for Endurance rides in his later life (he is now 27 years old) and he has competed at National and FEI rides, generally at distances between 30 and 40km (short, compared with some rides of up to 160km!). This year, we competed at Euston Park, supporting the Pony Club team, and accompanying a young rider around the course.

Just as we receive great local support at The Unicorn, we like to support local courses, so all 4 meetings are at local clubs with one different course each year. The format is always individual stableford (full handicap, max 24 for men and 36 for ladies) and members will compete for the TUGS trophy at each meeting. There will be a special prize for the person who has accumulated the highest aggregate of stableford points (best 3 rounds out of 4) which will be awarded after the final meeting of the year.
