ion The Biggs Pavil & North field

Its mid-September and we’ve just come back from a dog walk around the fields that surround our beautiful village. We walked with the late summer sunshine on our backs, views were a patchwork of gold, green and brown and the hedgerows full of blackberries, crab apples, hips, haws and sloes creating the scent of Autumn, it is hard to believe that this will soon be a distant memory. The turning back of the clocks heralds the arrival of November, a month sandwiched between the ostentatious October with its autumn glory of colours and decadent December all flashy lights and celebrations. For many it is the start of daily commutes enveloped in darkness, foggy, damp, and dreary days and for those of us with dogs muddy paws time! The poet Thomas Hood writes: No shade, no shine, no butterflies, no bees, No fruits, no flowers, no leaves, no birds! – November! Yep that about sums it up….. but the 11 th month is lit up shortly by the sparklers and rockets of fireworks night, to celebrate the thwarting of Guy Fawkes and his gang from blowing up the Houses of Parliament back in 1605. Although, perhaps more importantly we commemorate Armistice Day on the 11 th hour, of the 11 th day of the 11 th Month, its symbol the bright red Poppy. Quite rightly we honour and remember those that sacrificed so much for the rest of us, not just at the time of the conflict they may have fallen in, but for generations to come. This month’s front cover was one of the many photographs I took of the Tower of London Poppies in November 2014, seven years ago now and so much has happened since then most poignantly the Global Pandemic, which has affected all of us in so many ways but perhaps has made us realise how precious life is and that we should make the most of every day what ever the weather or life throws at us. With that in mind dig out the wellies, jumpers, and raincoats to walk the dog but the reward of a steaming hot cuppa tea, toasted teacake and log fire awaits on our return. Happy November everyone … Enjoy!

Don’t forget to use the Crier Greetings page in the December issue. Send your Christmas Greetings via the Crier and donate money to charity instead of buying Christmas cards. What a great idea. To Hugh Vale, for yet again, mowing the North Field in preparation for the tree planting season. Without Hugh's tireless efforts the village would be a poorer place.

Cublington Crier

Keeping you up to date on village life, news and events since 1984

The monthly magazine of the Buckinghamshire village of Cublington - the village that moved.

Thank you to those who have sent in content following my recent appeals. As we keep saying, the Crier can only survive with content. People keep telling me what an amazing job we do, and we thank you for those comments, but please remember that if you don’t send something in, thinking others will, they might be thinking exactly the same and we get nothing. Please don’t be shy. Letters, spotteds, articles of interest, photos, anything that might interest our readers. Thank you so much.

A serious question to villagers...

I was asked that if anything happened to me and I became incapacitated, what would happen to the Crier? I said, I presume someone would take it on. But then started thinking... could they?! I've taken it on from the lick and stick it used to be and now run it much more like a proper business, utilising all the latest design software. So - serious question - is there anyone out there who has knowledge of the Adobe suite of programmes, InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop and would be willing to help edit/design and put together the magazine, if I'm away say for a month sometime in 2022? I'm not ill or anything I promise, but just planning for all eventualities and even a long golfing holiday perhaps. Please let me know if you are both capable and interested! Cheers. By being more active across the day, you will feel better, burn more calories and appreciate the outdoors. Make moving more part of your daily routine with some tips from St Judes: • Clean your way to fitness – cleaning around the house will have you moving and breaking a sweat and don’t pay someone to wash and clean your car, do it yourself save money and burn extra calories along the way. • Don’t be a couch potato - if you love nothing more than sitting on the sofa and watching a box set after a day at work sat at a desk, why not do the ironing, tidy the room or clean out that cupboard that you have been meaning to do for ages. • Catch up with friends - instead of a boozy lunch, head to the park, beach or countryside for a walk • Get down with the kids - simply throwing a ball around in the garden or a game of hide and seek can get everyone up and moving. Why not put on some dance party music or an interactive dance game after dinner. • Park further away – if you have to drive to work or the shops, park at the back of the car park so you need to walk further. • Go barking mad - when you’re a dog owner walks become a part of life and are great for your physical and mental health too. • Get off your chair -alternate between standing and sitting or get a standing desk. If you have a muscular or bone problem holding you back from doing the things you love, why not get a physiotherapy assessment? They can offer effective treatment and advice to stop the problem from returning. Please sign up for the North Field Tree Planting Work Parties With the news that Orchard Ground Committee have been given nearly 2000 trees to help the planting of North Field, and the final plan being prepared for planning sign off, we are nearly at the stage where we need manpower and volunteers. Please let us know if you would be willing to spare an hour or two (or more!) helping achieve our ambitions for North Field. Please fill in the below and return to either Martyn Waters or Charlie Toosey, or alternatively put your slip through the Biggs Pavilion postbox and we'll make sure it's collected and logged. Yes. Local charity brings a dash of Christmas to Aylesbury

Florence Nightingale Hospice Charity is bringing its popular Santa Dash event to Aylesbury this year, to coincide with the town’s Santa Parade on Sunday 21st November. Santa Dashers will be able to choose between running, jogging, scooting or walking their way around a 2.5km or 5km circular route around the town to raising money for local hospice care. Claire Redrup, Community Fundraising Manager, commented “We are so pleased to be part of launch of Christmas in Aylesbury this year. This will be our first public event since March 2020 and we can’t wait to see families and friends out in their best Christmas outfits, enjoying themselves, all in a good cause.” Every ‘Dasher’ will receive a Santa hat, medal and the chance to take part in the Santa Parade, as well as making it straight onto Santa’s ‘nice’ list for supporting a local charity. Tickets are just £12 for adults and £7 for children. For full details and to register for the Santa Dash, visit the Charity’s website at www.fnhospice.org.uk/santadash.

About Florence Nightingale Hospice Charity Florence Nightingale Hospice is located at Stoke Mandeville Hospital and provides first class specialist palliative care which is accessible and free of charge to those with a life-limiting illness in Buckinghamshire. What did you want to be when you grew up? I haven't decided yet :) What was your first job? Paper boy and then 5 yr Apprenticeship at ELECO (Engineering and Lighting Equipment Co) Who (alive or dead) would you like to have dinner with and why? Dominic Cummings to find out if he is really as strange as he appears to be. What historical era would you like to have lived in and why? I am very happy to be alive in the present times however strange they are at the moment. Where would you want to live if not where you live now and why? More than happy with Cublington but otherwise in the U.K. and anywhere that had a fantastic view. What is the temptation you wish you could resist? Sarcasm What is your favourite book and why? I enjoy technical and factual books, David Bodanis's 'Electric Universe' being one. What is your favourite song and why? Lots so don't really like to pick one. However, I like Willie Nelson songs and his 'I woke up still not dead again today' makes me laugh. Says it all really. What is the pet hate that makes your hackles rise? Making mistakes.....bit of a perfectionist I suppose. What is the unlikely interest that engages your curiosity? How locks work. I got quite good at picking them some time ago....all in the pursuit of research I hasten to add! How long have you lived in Cublington? 3 and a bit years Answer somewhere in the Crier.

The life of a vet! November. November in the vet practice – Late October and November is usually the start of the Firework Phobia phone calls from clients. Many dogs, but also cats, small pets and horses can be very traumatized by the sudden loud sounds and flashing lights. There is also the potential for physical harm from fireworks, still smouldering when they land and sparks from bonfires, which can cause fires in hay stores, stables and set light to rugs worn by horses. The behavioural problems can be helped, but desensitization takes time and effort, with months of careful exposure of the pet to the sounds and counter-conditioning, and the advice of an experienced pet behaviourist is useful. By the time we reach Halloween, most pets will require medical help to settle their anxiety, together with management - Curtains closed, tv or radio on with sound up, somewhere for the pet to retreat to (a den) and even ear plugs – a piece of cotton wool in each ear (Don’t forget to take them out afterwards!). Antianxiety medications range from the very mild forms through to the sledgehammer versions, and some can give a hangover effect, so they need to be used appropriately. There is a lot of useful advice on the internet and the Feliway and Adaptil websites are good. Several of our staff make regular trips to Tiggywinkles with injured wildlife. We provide emergency treatment for wild animals, and will euthanise them if the injuries are too extensive, but if we can, handing them on, for care and rehabilitation is very satisfying. Rabbits and pigeons are most frequently seen, often after a cat has been hunting and brough home a ‘live present’ for their owner. We have also treated owls, wildfowl and seagulls (smelly creatures!) and, of course, hedgehogs! Jane A

Orchard Ground & North Field Latest news...

•A pplication for a time extension to the grant made by The Heart of Buckinghamshire Community Foundation of £2,500 towards the cost of the proposed community orchard on North Field As previously reported in The Crier, in December 2019 The Heart of Buckinghamshire Community Foundation kindly agreed to make a grant of £2.500 towards the cost of the proposed community orchard on North Field. One condition of the grant was that all grant monies needed to be spent by 30/11/2021. Given the continuing delays in our receiving final planning approval from Buckinghamshire Council Planning Department for the change of use of North Field from arable farmland to amenity use, an application has been made to The Heart of Buckinghamshire Community Foundation for an extension to the final date from 30/11/21 to 30/04/2022. Conditional planning approval was received in June 2021 with requests calling for a landscape plan and an ecological report to be submitted. We had received a verbal report from our Case Officer in September 2020 that our application for the change of use had been submitted for sign-off and that the final approval was imminent. However, what followed is a catalogue of planning delays over the next nine months with our being allocated five different Case Officers, none of whom appeared to be moving matters forward as to our planning application being signed off. The various lockdowns and a shortage of planning staff had led to a build up of outstanding planning applications. We were then informed that Buckinghamshire Planning Department was concentrating on planning applications for housing; it is likely that the demise of AVDC did not help matters with a number of their planning staff finding employment elsewhere well before the changes in local government structures in Buckinghamshire. From the Rector

Known unto God

November is a church season in its own right, beginning with the well-known Feast of All Saints, on which we remember ‘globally’ that people from many different times and places can become united as members of each other in one fellowship. The following day, the Commemoration of All Souls, is a day for remembering, more locally and more specifically, our departed loved ones, again in a spirit of mutual belonging. Remembrance Sunday then focuses on those whose lives were lost specifically through conflict between nations and communities, and is often associated with the phrase ‘known unto God’ reminding us that our belonging is indeed, above all else, inseparable from the manner in which we are known by God. This is a season reminding us that even those who sadly never have much chance to be known lovingly or intimately by other people, or whose memory is tragically inseparable from painful acts of conflict, always still have a witness in God. All Saints and All Souls are likewise occasions for considering more fully what it is to be known by God and the consequences of this for how we might strive to come to know and remember each other more deeply – even those with whom our only ‘contact’ lies in how we choose to remember them in company with others, and hopefully in the process to discover more about them. The end of this season also marks the end of the church’s liturgical year, just before we begin afresh with the season of Advent. The final Sunday of the church year is the Feast of Christ the King, on which the focus is on how Christ was known to God so fully and perfectly that both the true kingdom and true communion are to be found incorporated in Christ and evidenced in the remembrance of his utterly unique life – a life that thoroughly binds together that mutual belonging that this closing season commemorates. It is easier to talk about what we know (or think we know) than it is to give any account of how we are known, whether by God, by each other, or even to ourselves. How we become known to or discovered by others is at the very least a complex, developing, two-way and potentially life-changing process, well worth an entire month or season of consideration. With prayers and blessings for the season Revd Dr Andrew Krauss Team Vicar for the Cottesloe Benefice, Diocese of Oxford

The Crier funds village projects through advertising revenue. We help fund village projects and institutions... such as the printing of the book 'Cublington in Pictures Old and New', The Rememberance Commemorative Insert, The Old Village History insert, the refurbished Biggs pavilion kitchen, the village fete, the Cublington Tea Towels and Bags, The forthcoming Artists Exhibition to name but a few. We are extremely proud of being able to do this and would like an independent arbiter (a volunteer please) to join us and help with overseeing this use of Crier funds. So, do you know of any local businesses who might like to advertise in the Crier? Or do you have an idea for a fundraising project that we could seed fund? Contact Gary or Gill on 688548 for a media pack or see rates on inside of front cover.

The Aston Abbotts & Cublington Ladies Club It is with some sadness that I write this note regarding the Ladies Club who met once a month in the Village Hall in Aston Abbotts on a Thursday afternoon. We have, regretfully, come to the decision to close the club down. Times have changed since the club was first formed well over 80 years ago. Mothers were at home with the children all day and the club was a welcome chance to catch up with friends and neighbours. Nowadays there are clubs in both villages that meet in the evenings and, as many of the younger wives and mothers are working in the daytime, that suits them better. There have been some amazing speakers over the years. Some have enthralled us with tales of their adventures and countries they have visited and others have been very entertaining and hilariously funny. One afternoon that stands out was when a retired Royal Butler came and told us so much about his time with the Royal Family working both at Buckingham Palace and on the Royal Yacht. We have had outings each year to some wonderful places and our Spring Lunch was always something to look forward to. Our Christmas Carol service which was followed by a delicious afternoon tea, prepared by the ladies from each village in turn, was a highlight. We had a small balance in the bank which, at our final get together, we agreed should be donated to Age UK. I have received a lovely thank you card from Cathy Cassidy who is the manager of The Age UK shop in Leighton Buzzard. She expressed her sadness at our Club closing but appreciated Age UK benefitting from our leftover funds. Fortunately living in small villages we are all able to keep in touch and will no doubt be bumping into each other quite regularly. April Gilbert ( Curnow as was ) Treasurer.

Spotted - this presumably expensive model plane crash landed in our garden last month... I can't believe it came from further away than our village! Surely someone recognises it?! Contact gary@cublington.com to get it back.

Street Lights I have recently taken on the job of keeping an eye on the street lights around the village. If you happen to notice any that aren’t working, I would be grateful if you could let me know either by email, gaantosiewicz@hotmail.com, by phone 01296 681430, 07530 762302 or in person – 16 Ridings Way – and I can let the contractor know. Did You know? 1. In Old English November was ‘Windmonath’ (Wind Month) … although now with climate warming every month seems to be windy especially when out cycling! Ed 2. The Dutch call it ‘Slachtmaand’ (slaughter month) Slaughter referring to the killing of animals. 3. The name ‘November’ comes from the Latin for nine (novem), as it was the ninth month of the Roman calendar. 4. November is the only month to represent a letter in the phonetic alphabet 5. There is no mention of the month of November in any of Shakespeare’s plays. 6.The Birthstone for November is the Topaz. The flower is the Chrysanthemum 7. November Star signs are Scorpio and Sagittarius 8.In Finland, the month of November is called ‘Marraskuu’. ‘Marras’ can mean dead and ‘Kuu' can mean moon or month, so November is known as the month of the dead. 9. “If there’s ice in November to bear a duck, there’ll be nothing after but sludge and muck” (Old weather saying” 10. November in the Northern Hemisphere is equivalent to May in the Southern Hemisphere.

Last year, the Advent Windows were the main focus of our village Christmas, and although we hope to have a Village Christmas Lunch, Christingle, a Carol Service and Christmas Day church service this year, the Windows are an important way to link the village community. New service launched to help Bucks charities and community groups thrive A new service is offering support, guidance and training to Buckinghamshire’s not-for-profit groups to help them continue to make a difference in their local communities post pandemic. The VCSE Support Service, funded by Buckinghamshire Council and delivered by local charity Community Impact Bucks, supports charities, voluntary and community groups and social enterprises (VCSE or notfor-profit groups) in all aspects of their work, including securing essential funding, being well-managed, and recruiting volunteers. Organisations of all sizes can access a wide range of online resources and guidance on the Community Impact Bucks website, and further tailored support can be requested via a support request form with priority given to organisations with an income of under £100,000. Four fifths of the county’s 4,750 voluntary organisations are classed as small or micro organisations[i], with an income of under £100,000, and many have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. When the county’s not-for-profits were asked what their biggest challenges were for the future[ii], it was found that: Nearly a third (31%) stated their biggest challenge was funding and finance One in five (21%) identified their biggest challenge was adapting to new opportunities and ways of working Almost one in five (19%) said their biggest challenge was recruiting enough volunteers “We have an amazing array of charities and community groups in Buckinghamshire, playing an essential part in the running of our communities. However their experience of the pandemic has varied considerably – some have adapted brilliantly, while others have struggled with reduced incomes and losing volunteers – and we have seen new grassroots groups set up to respond to new needs,” commented Katie Higginson, CEO of Community Impact Bucks. “Our new service can provide support to these organisations, whatever their situation – whether it is to overcome challenges and adapt to new ways of working; to set up, grow, and put in place the structures, funding and people they need to be successful; or perhaps to get through difficult times, offering support to help them be stronger and more resilient. Tailored support ensures each organisation can get the help that they need.” Bucks resident Helen Pettifer came to the service looking for advice on how to set up a new voluntary organisation: “It was really useful to be able to talk through what I am looking to achieve, and the advice given gave me a much clearer understanding of what I need to do to move my campaign forwards.” Cllr Steve Bowles, Buckinghamshire Council’s Cabinet Member for Communities said: “I am delighted that the support service provided by Community Impact Bucks for voluntary sector organisations working with our communities in Buckinghamshire has successfully launched and is already making a real difference, building on the excellent partnership work we saw during the pandemic.” To get help for an organisation that would benefit from this support, people are encouraged to fill in a short request form https://communityimpactbucks.org.uk/charities-groups/request-for-support/ and then a member of our team will get in touch. Organisations can request support for themselves or they can be referred by a third party.

Volunteer Recruitment Day Sunday 14th November 11am-2pm No booking required – just turn up and meet the team! Ever thought about volunteering but don't know where to start? Why not try your local heritage railway, right here in Quainton! The list of available roles is plentiful, and we currently need more hands on deck, so this Volunteer Recruitment Day has been set up to allow potential volunteers to meet current volunteers, take a look around the site, see an engine in steam and find out about what we do and how you might be able to lend a hand. We have a huge variety of volunteer roles and, basically, these roles fit into one of two types: • 'Behind the Scenes' volunteers generally come in during the week and help maintain the site and our artefacts whilst we are closed. This could be mowing, mending, strimming hedges and painting fences, or helping maintain or restore steam engines, carriages, railway buildings etc. • 'Customer Facing' volunteers are the ones who come in and spend the day with us when we are open to the public on Sundays and other Special Event days throughout the year. These roles range from helping in our second-hand bookshop, cafe or gift shop, and welcoming visitors on the entrance gate, to crewing one of our steam engines, being a guard on the platform or helping to park cars on our especially busy days when we need all hands on deck! You can come for as long as you want, as often as you want. Some volunteers come several times a week, other comes only when we have a really busy event coming up. Volunteering is supposed to help you as much as it helps us, so you can do as much or as little as you like - we'll appreciate each and every minute of your time you give to us! To find out more, why not wander down and join us anytime between 11am and 2pm on Sunday 14th November – the cafe will be open, why not bring a friend! We look forward to welcoming you here. If you have a specific query about volunteering or about this recruitment day, please email us on office@bucksrailcentre.org

Volunteers Required for Cublington Village

Speedwatch Project Vehicles, being driven too fast is a major factor in preventing people from enjoying the environment in which they have chosen to live. It is also, in almost every area, top of the list of issues which are of concern. Excess vehicle speed also contributes to the severity of any road traffic collision and has an impact on the lives of people within a community. A positive scheme to help tackle this is to participate in Community Speedwatch. Speedwatch is a piece of kit known as MVAS (Moveable Vehicle Activated Signs) Speed Indicating Devices (SID). Speedwatch is used to establish whether there is a perceived or actual problem. MVAS/SID/Speedwatch are not enforcement tools- they are designed to record offending and to try to educate drivers at the problem site/s. Simon Morgan, until recently was a Parish Councillor and was the village’s Speedwatch co-ordinator, a role that I have now been asked to take on as a newly co-opted Cublington Parish Councillor. Simon with a number of village volunteers deployed the Speedwatch equipment on a number of occasions and from records, it would appear the last time the equipment was used in Cublington was back in 2017. Obviously, Covid-19 prevented it being used in last two years. Several of the volunteers have indicated that they would like to stand down as volunteers allowing others the opportunity to volunteer for this role and I thank them for their previous service. I am now looking to ‘recruit’ some additional volunteers to join the group, full free training will be given at a convenient time to the volunteer. The equipment can be used by groups of volunteers, a minimum 2 and a maximum of 4. As the equipment is owned by Buckinghamshire County Council it is shared with other villages around our area and therefore needs to be booked. Usage of the equipment is only permitted during daylight hours. So, if you are interested in becoming a volunteer and can spare a couple of hours on an ad-hoc basis please get in touch with me I would be delighted to hear from you. Thanks. CHRISTMAS PUDDING DAY It’s time to make the Christmas Puddings, ‘Stir Up Sunday’ falls on 21st November this year. The last Sunday of the Church Year, the Sunday before Advent. Stir up Sunday is the traditional day for everyone to take a turn in stirring the Christmas Pudding, whilst making a wish. A Christmas pudding is traditionally made with 13 ingredients to represent Christ and his disciples. Ingredients: 225g/8oz golden sugar 225g/8oz vegetarian suet 340g/12oz sultanas 340g/12oz raisins 225g/8oz currants 120g/4oz chopped candied peel 120g/4oz plain flour 120g/4oz fresh white breadcrumbs 60g/2oz flaked almonds Zest of 1 lemon 5 eggs beaten 1 level tsp ground cinnamon 1 level tsp mixed spice 1 level tsp freshly grated nutmeg Pinch of salt 150ml/5fl oz brandy or rum

Method: • Mix together the dry ingredients • Stir in the eggs and brandy and mix well • Turn the mix into 4x1 pint or 2x2 pint lightly greased pudding basins • Cover with a circle of parchment paper and foil over the top of each basin and tie securely with string • Make a string handle from one side of the basin so it’s easier to lift the basin from the saucepan after cooking • Put the basin in a large steamer of boiling water and cover with a lid • Oil for 5-6 hours, topping up the boiling water from time to time if necessary • Cool • Change the parchment paper and foil to fresh ones and tie up as before. Store in a cool cupboard until Christmas day. • To serve the pudding on Christmas day, steam for 2 hours and serve with brandy sauce, cream, or homemade custard. Enjoy!

SPOTTED!

PLEASE keep your eyes peeled ... If you spot

anything, and we really do mean anything of interest (silly or serious or even just slightly interesting) in the village - please let us know.

Spotted Keep your eyes peeled for crash landings this Halloween. Spotted - or sadly not...

This witch took a wrong turn last year and came a cropper.

Norman, from BORG came to check the owl box Very sadly the late brood of owlets did not survive. We need more voles!

Spotted Surprised a lot

of regular walkers who thought they were all boys! Suddenly a few weeks ago a baby calf was born to one of the cattle in the mound field!

Spotted

Earth Closet at Cublington Copse on the Dunton Road. Apparently it was built for the use of the Scouts who carry out occasional maintenance work in this small, circular memorial woodland area that commemorates the local action that prevented the building of London's Third Airport. (I've never seen that! Ed)

Spotted

A sign that has appeared on the bend in Stewkley Road where Littlecote Lane, aka Cow Poo Lane, turns off. It is quite bizarre that this, well surfaced, section of road is going to be interfered with when there are other parts of the road in desperate need of repair and resurfacing. Still, maybe it will break the habit of the truck drivers who use that as a route to Redland's waste site on the Dunton Road.

Spotted

Something I've never seen before... a rainbow on the floor... in the dew on Orchard Ground!

• D og Walkers

(Circet are a major French telecommunications company! Cable? Ed)

Are kindly reminded to use the dog bins provided at great expense to dispose of dog waste. Numerous bags have been found left on the floor at entrances to the North Field. Its all very well not wanting to carry them round, but it's so easy to forget to pick them up again! Please DO NOT LEAVE them like this for someone else to dispose of. Also if you can't see your dog, how do you know it hasn't pooped somewhere?! Please be considerate and be in total control of you dog .There is a fine of £500 for the offence - a serious matter. Be warned. Thank you.
