Editorial One of the advantages of living in this country, and particularly in the countryside, is that we can appreciate the changing seasons. Each season different but amazing. The changing colour of the trees in Autumn is a wonderful sight to behold. Nature has an amazing colour palette. Children love kicking through the fallen leaves or collecting them to make art work. Our 5 year old granddaughter, Evie, is no exception and she has provided the cover for this month’s edition with her own Autumn collage. When life is changing on a daily basis with restrictions and lockdowns, it is heartening to see that nature goes on as before and is there for us all. During those months earlier this year when our freedoms were reduced, it proved to be an opportunity for many of us to achieve something we may have been thinking about but felt was beyond us or simply did not have the time to consider. It has been very interesting to see the local artists featuring in the Crier who obviously made the most of this period. What talent there is in such a small village! Not being blessed with any such gift, I decided to challenge myself and brighten up the blank wall in our conservatory with a grapevine. Not a living one, but a painted version. After scouring the internet (what a godsend that was during this period) I found just what I was looking for in the form of a stencil. Being unable to shop for paint did not prove a problem as the perfect shade of green adorned the walls in our dining room and there was ample left-over in the pot. It proved a most enjoyable exercise with a finished result I was very happy with. OK, I am not an artist but I felt like one! I also used up all my oddments of knitting wool to make small, stuffed hearts. I started this after seeing a request from a hospital for knitted/ crocheted hearts for Covid patients and their families. I also displayed some in our window and hoped this gladdened some village hearts on their daily walks. Unable to hold our weekly choir meetings, we did our best to sing along on a regular zoom get-together. Rising to the challenge, many of us took part in individual recordings which were cleverly amalgamated with other areas into one virtual choir to raise funds for charity. If you are interested in hearing the result, please enter the following link to your favourite browser. https://youtu.be/flVN7Ep2KdY The gardens certainly benefitted from extra attention, a lot of DIY jobs were carried out, new skills learnt and many, who had not walked so far outside the village before, realised what interesting footpaths and landscapes could be enjoyed by venturing a bit further afield. Did you achieve something special during lockdown? The more unusual the better as I am sure the Editorial team would love to hear about your various achievements. Sadly, as we go to press cases of Coronavirus in our area are on the rise again. Keep well, keep safe. Julie & Doug Merriman

ARMISTICE DAY – 11TH NOVEMBER 2020 The poppy is the enduring symbol of remembrance of the First World War. It is strongly linked with Armistice Day and Remembrance Sunday which is always on the second Sunday in November, which this year is 8th November 2020. Poppies were a common sight, especially on the Eastern Front. They flourished in the soil churned up by the fighting and shelling. The flower provided Canadian doctor, John McCrae with inspiration for his poem ‘In Flanders Fields’, which he wrote whilst serving in Ypres in 1915. Artificial poppies were first sold in Britain in 1921 to raise money for the Earl Haig Fund in support of ex-servicemen and the families of those who had died in the conflict. They were supplied by Anna Guerin, who had been manufacturing the flowers in France to raise money for war orphans. Selling poppies proved so popular that in 1922 the British Legion founded a factory, which was staffed by disabled exservicemen, to produce their own. It continues to do so to this day. Other Charities sell poppies in different colours, each with their own meaning, but all to commemorate the losses of war. White poppies symbolize peace without violence and purple poppies are worn to honour animals killed in conflict. The poppy continues to be sold worldwide to raise money and to remember those who lost their lives in the First World War and in subsequent conflicts.

Dear Resident, With everything moving so fast I am writing to again update you on how things are in Buckinghamshire, what we are asking people to do to keep us all safe and the campaign we will be running to help keep Buckinghamshire out of the ‘High’ category for COVID. The situation in Buckinghamshire This week there is a clear message as unfortunately we are starting to see more hospital admissions in Buckinghamshire due to the coronavirus. These are still small numbers but rising. On a slightly more positive note, in the past week we have seen a small drop in our weekly infection rate overall in Buckinghamshire, from 87 cases per 100,000 people to 76 cases per 100,000. While on the face of it this is encouraging news, fewer tests were carried out in Bucks during this seven day period yet the percentage of people testing positive is around the same as the previous week. More worryingly, we are now seeing a rise in cases in more vulnerable age groups across the county, with a bigger number of people aged 60+ in Buckinghamshire testing positive. We are also seeing high case numbers in the former South Bucks and Chiltern District areas; South Bucks has a weekly rate of 122 cases per 100,000 people and Chiltern stands at 81 cases per 100,000. I completely understand that someone ‘testing positive’ does not mean that they are admitted to hospital. Many people, particularly the young, suffer few symptoms and recover quickly. However, amongst the elderly and those with pre-existing conditions, this disease can be serious and even fatal. We need to act now We know from elsewhere how quickly things can change and with rates remaining high and more people going into hospital locally with COVID-19, we must all do what it takes to bring the virus under control here whilst it is still mainly confined to younger people. With the government currently pursuing a localised approach to restrictions we have the power here in Buckinghamshire to determine our own fate. I desperately want us to avoid being moved into ‘Tier 2’, the so called ‘High’ infection category. This would mean tighter restrictions that will harm our local businesses, endanger jobs and stop us doing the things that help make life enjoyable like meeting our friends and loved ones in a safe way. What we are asking you to do We all have a part to play in what happens next. So this week I am writing with a big, but vital ask to stop us moving into Tier 2. The evidence is that the virus is being spread in Buckinghamshire between groups we don’t live with, such as friends, particularly in people’s homes. Being indoors with the windows closed is one of the worst environments for spreading the disease.

So, we are asking everyone to recommit to observing the current rules in place and, if possible, to voluntarily go a bit further, and especially to consider avoiding meeting people in our homes who we don’t live with. This isn’t currently a legal requirement but more of us choosing to meet people outside or in a COVID safe environment instead could and should make a real difference. Please do the following, which includes and slightly expands on the current Tier 1 ‘Medium risk’ guidance that applies in Bucks at the moment: Don’t socialise with other households at home - meet up outside instead or in a COVID safe environment Observe the rule of six indoors and outdoors Always stay 2 metres (6 feet) apart Wash your hands thoroughly and often Wear a face covering where required (unless you’re exempt) Stay at home and book a test if you have symptoms It’s vital that if you develop symptoms, no matter how mild, that you book a test and isolate immediately. Anyone else you live with must isolate too. I also wanted to share with you our guidance on seasonal events as we move into the autumn. Throughout 2020 we’ve had to do things differently and it’ll need to be the same for the events we enjoy at this time of year like Bonfire Night, Halloween and Remembrance Sunday. With the current levels of coronavirus transmission, the council is strongly discouraging holding or attending any events that physically bring large numbers of people close together at this time. Even though it’s lawful, gathering people together simply carries more risk at this precarious time in the pandemic locally. Needless to say, activities like trick or treating or bonfire parties just can’t happen in the same way this year. It’s not all doom and gloom though - there are lots of other ways to mark these occasions in a safe way. Take a look on our website for ideas on celebrating Halloween this year. Looking after ourselves and each other If we do the right thing now, we can turn this around and stay out of Tier 2 - that’s what we all want. We want to safeguard our jobs, our health and our freedoms so please, let’s pull together and do all it takes to stop the spread of the virus in Buckinghamshire. Stay safe and protect Bucks, Martin Tett Leader of Buckinghamshire Council

Leaving Alexandria

by Allie Brosh (suitable for 16+)

by Richard Holloway

It’s been more than five years since Allie Brosh published Hyperbole and a Half, her first incredible collection of always funny, sometimes sad, comics and writings about dogs, depression, and the weird things little kids do. Brosh has been through a lot in that time, and this new collection covers the same topics with even more ferocity and hilarity. It’s over 500 pages long, and I read it in one sitting. She’s a genius. I loved this book.

Bishop of Edinburgh until he resigned in 2000 after a crisis of faith, Holloway is one of the nation’s most respected radical thinkers on religion. This book is his memoir, covering his childhood, training for the priesthood, time spent in ministry to the slums of Glasgow, and the conflicts both personal and political that led him away from the Church.

Cublington’s Advent Windows TRAIL 2020

You may have seen in the lastCrier, that 2020’s Cublington Advent Windows will be one of the few events that can beat Covid19! We are planning to have as many windows as possible included in our Trail, and if you do not feel confident in decorating a window, there are others in the village who can help. The most important factor is visibility. The window should be visible from the pavement, so that no-one needs to come onto your garden or driveway. Upstairs windows are very effective, but downstairs works too. The window needs to be lit from 6pm to 9pm, from your date for ‘switch-on’ through to Christmas. I use a timer on a lamp, so that I do not have to flick a switch every day! ‘all automated, Sergei’ We hope to have two themes running through the trail this year, of the Nativity (think Stars, Angels, Bethlehem, camels, sheep etc) and Reindeer (Santa, elves, red noses!) A few spots remain, and I would love to have extra houses included, so please considering offering a window to the Christmas trail. Please let Jane A know ASAP, (janea2000@aol.com) if you can be involved, and the earliest date from which you can have your window(s) lit.

IS WORKING FROM HOME GETTING TO BE A REAL PAIN IN THE NECK? A recent article by Ashleigh Webber (17/09/20) in Working from Home reports that 4 in 5 workers have developed musculoskeletal pain.

In the workplace, checks are put in place to make sure that computers, desks and chairs are all set up for the user, but the charity Versus Arthritis said that it had found that 89% of those suffering with back, shoulder or neck pain in their new workspace, had not told their employer about it. Alarmingly, 23% said that they were getting musculoskeletal pain most of the time and 46% said that they had been taking painkillers more often that they would like. Back pain was the most common complaint at 50%, followed by neck pain at 36% and shoulder pain at 28%. Versus Arthritis said that people were reluctant to mention their health needs because they didn’t know their rights or were worried about job security. Karen Middleton, Chief Executive of The Chartered Society of Physiotherapy commented “This research isn’t surprising as Covid-19, months of working from home and reduced activity levels, will have had a serious deconditioning effect on millions of people”. The Charity urged employers to help their employees by aiding communication with them and addressing any ergonomic concerns. At St Judes we are noticing these kinds of problems more frequently. Ensuring that chair, desk and computer laptop setups are correct, will lessen daily repetitive strain. Taking regular breaks to get up and move around to do other tasks are also crucial. Good posture helps keep your joints healthy and strong. You’ll also breathe more freely which will keep you feeling calm and relaxed. So, sit or stand ‘tall’ with your shoulders back and your core (tummy) muscles slightly pulled in. In good posture, your spine, shoulder and hip joints will all be well aligned. We can help you with ergonomic advice, give exercises to alleviate your problem and hands-on treatment where necessary. If you think you need help, give St Judes a call - one of our friendly physio team will be pleased to help. The Vales on farming in the Vale #2 The crops we plant at the end of September onwards are Winter Wheat, Winter Barley, Winter Oats and for the first time in many years Winter Beans, with the intention to get the plants established and strong enough to survive the Winter. We buy in a small % of our seed. The seed we buy is predominately to multiply up for planting the year after. We do this to ensure variety characteristics are maintained, to trial different varieties to see how they suit our growing conditions and ultimately multiplying our own seed saves us money. We harvest our seed crops the same as any other but store them individually and prior to planting have them cleaned to remove chaff, cracked grains and any other plant seed that may be present. Some may be treated with a chemical to help prevent existing seed and soil borne diseases and bagged ready to load into the seed drill hopper. We have the seed tested at a laboratory for indication of % germination and diseases such as fusarium and bunt. We use the information from the laboratory to help determine the seed rate we need to plant the crop at and whether we require to have the seed chemically treated. Unfortunately Storm Alex arrived bringing with it, according to the official weather station at High Wycombe, 108.2mm/133% of our average rainfall for the month of October. So my hopes of a easy autumn establishment, as mentioned last month, were dashed. We have now been faced with the challenge of waiting until ground conditions allow planting operations to commence. This time of year is actually one of the most stunning times to be out and about in the countryside. It is a wonderful time to see the diverse wildlife we have here in Cublington. If you have not seen the beautiful barn owl that hunts often on the site of the old village beside my house now is a good time to walk down and have a look at dawn or dusk. Young Charlie Powell and his friend Ben Shore came to visit me the other week whilst I was working in a field beside the brook. Whilst investigating the brook they saw a crayfish. I had not seen one since I was a boy so was very pleased to hear they are still there. Stay safe, George

Orchard Ground & North Field Latest grant & other news

• Update on the Community Orchard and North Field Last month, just as The Crier was going to print, Orchard Ground received confirmation from The Heart of Bucks Community Foundation that our application for grant funding for the proposed community orchard has been agreed in the amount of £2,500. This grant required some matched funding from our local community. To date, village residents and other supporters have donated £1,409 with requests for particular fruit trees and nut trees, and other trees for planting out on other areas of North Field. If you would like to make a donation for a particular fruit tree, or other tree please contact: Liz Smith, Treasurer of Orchard Ground: email: lizsmith1@hotmail.com, or Martyn Waters, Orchard Ground Committee: email: martyn.waters@icloud.com Mobile: 07973754356 The planning application for North Field is making some progress, although this is taking longer than we envisaged under the new local government structures in Buckinghamshire Pippa Cheetham, member of the Orchard Ground Committee and a Planning Consultant with a neighbouring local authority has kindly undertaken a great deal of pro-bono work with this planning application for North Field to be listed as amenity land. Pippa has responded to several questions from the local Planning Department including about landscaping and hedge lines. Some expenditure has been incurred for planning fees and a landscaping plan; these costs are being shared 50/50 between Cublington Parish Council and Orchard Ground. Once the planning consent has been received we can make a start with the community orchard. With some forty trees to be planted and then cared for we will be looking for some volunteers to help with this. Several people on the allotments have already offered to help out and there has been particular interest in wanting to help care for the planned cider apple trees! Please let Liz Smith or Martyn Waters know if you might be able to help out with the planting and aftercare. It would be great to have a list of people we can approach from time to time for some help as North Field develops. The occasional working mornings for the village clean up, litter picking, and Orchard Ground tidy up all work very well with a number of volunteers helping out when they can, from the coffee and bacon sandwiches, to cleaning, clearing and tidying up all help to keep Cublington a place we can all be proud of. When the consultation with Cublington residents was undertaken several years ago about the possible future uses for North Field, requests for a community orchard scored highly in the information received. It is great to see things starting to come together for the development of North Field, which will be for the benefit of all village residents. Martyn Waters Orchard Ground Committee The committee recently voted to waive their fee income from member clubs in the light of the Coronavirus Pandemic and reduced sporting participation. Allotments and Tennis Club will make a voluntary donation to OG in light of their being able to continue with their sport and recreation. •C ricket has finished for the season Remedial works have been contracted and are taking place on the outfield due to a Poa grass infestation. A grant of £3,000 was obtained from the ECB to help facilitate these works. £2,040 was given by Orchard Ground Committee to help with essential remedial works on the field including spiking to the outfield to improve drainage. • 100 Club 2020/21 - 7 Draws in one! The Buckinghamshire Volunteer Matching Service is calling for

more Bucks residents to sign-up as volunteers to help local people and communities during the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic. The Volunteer Matching Service, which is run by Community Impact Bucks in partnership with Buckinghamshire Council and The Clare Foundation, matches registered volunteers to roles where they are most needed in the county. The Service is currently planning for an expected increase in need in our communities over the coming weeks and is looking for volunteers to fill key roles – from adhoc, one-off tasks such as PPE delivery to longer term positions such as regular supermarket collections, mentoring for young people and providing ongoing support for vulnerable people. There is a call for volunteers from across the county but in particular from the Wycombe, Missendens and Chesham areas. It takes just 2 minutes to register; once this has been submitted, somebody from the Volunteer Matching Service will be in contact when a potentially suitable role is available. At that time, you can choose if the role is a good fit for you. Cublington revisited - an evacuees story. Sad to report that Pat McGinn (Nee Allen) who was evacuated to Cublington with her sister aged just 7 and featured in an article in The Crier #379 in December 2018 has sadly pssed away. She and her sister are in the old school photo taken on St George’s day in the Cublington in Pictures book. Her daughter writes.... She was blessed to have a wonderful life, 88 years old and passed away peacefullly and painlessly, surrounded by family and so much love. Mom had so much life, until the very end. She often talked about her visit to Cublington which meant so much to her. It was a wonderful experience for all of us, as her memories came pouring out, which continued for months and years since that visit. We had made her a memory book of all of the experiences from our travels there, and she took it with her to show people on all of her travels. Ed

Church Update - November November is the month of Remembrance. This year all of our villages’ Acts of Remembrance will take place outside and there will not be any Remembrance Church Services. Thus, we can all remember without having to impose restrictions. That said, we do need to remember and our symbol is the poppy. As the years go by though, there are fewer who recall the second world war, never mind the first and some will ban wearing the poppy and call for the event itself to be scaled down. This is not correct. To not remember what happens when the world takes a wrong turn is to become sloppy, open the door to relativism and truth becomes a moveable feast; remembering is the corrective to that. And to ban the display of remembering is the root of all tyranny. The poppy calls us to remember. We do know of course why the poppy grew when it did; the business of war churned up the earth in which poppy seeds had laid dormant. Received wisdom says that they stay dormant until disturbed and the right time to grow – ironic really that they then grew when they did; it was exactly the right time. The poppy prompts us to wonder because it is particularly arresting to realise that in the destruction of so much, the vegetation, the weapons of war themselves and so many, many human beings, amidst all that the poppy seed was not destroyed. Life found a way to coin a certain dinosaur movie. I don’t mean to be glib; it should prompt us to wonder. There is increasing evidence that those who pursue destruction and who celebrate terror are often trained in maths and the sciences. It seems that STEM subjects can foster the mindset which believes the world can be ordered, however violently, into a perfect system. Yet actually the history of scientific and mathematical advances is full of open ended questions stuffed with awe and wonder. Over a century ago, out of wholesale destruction came not nothing, but the poppy with organic symmetry. So, the poppy should cause us to wonder and therefore challenge the forces of destruction. And finally, the poppy leads us to hope. The Christian gospel is founded on hope rooted in the belief that we have seen enough in this life to call us to believe that there’s more than just what we can see. The massive concepts of Peace, Justice and Truth call us to think beyond ourselves which, for the Christian, points us to God. But that is not to say that the poppies carpeting the fields of death “came from God” because then the gospel would be simply convenient and trite; we must be more rigorous. And we can be. When Christ’s followers saw him first die and then alive once more, they put their hope in him and it is the same hope which fills Christ’s followers today. The hope that death is not the final word, that life is greater. The challenge from the Christian gospel is not “to believe that which we can’t see”; the challenge is “to not disbelieve that which we can”. As the human race muddles and lurches its way from one catastrophe to another, the poppy calls us to remember; it calls us to awe and wonder and then to hope in the Christ who does not give up, who even yet will do a new thing, however unexpected. With every blessing, Rev’d Howard Robson 01296 688593.

In Flanders Fields

by John McCrae, May 1915 In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields.

BONFIRE NIGHT JOKES I walked passed a burnt out building with a broken sign saying “Fireworks”. How right they were. How many civil servants does it take to set fire to Guy Fawkes on November 5th? Twenty, One to strike the match and nineteen to fill in the paper work.

A policeman arrested two kids on bonfire night. One for drinking battery acid, the other was eating fireworks. He charged one and let the other one off! How many Microsoft programmers does it take to start the November 5th bonfire? Zero Microsoft declares darkness to be a new standard.

They say that you should never go back to a firework once lit. Our garden has been out of bounds since 1990.

How many Mafia hitmen does it take to light the bonfire?

Three, One to set fire to the effigy, one to watch his back, and one to shoot any witnesses.

PARKIN Traditional Cake for Bonfire Night

Like bonfires themselves, the tradition of eating Parkin at this time of year is much older than the Gunpowder Plot. The origins are unclear – they could be pagan or linked to All Saints’ Day – but for centuries it’s been enjoyed at the start of November, usually on ‘Parkin Sunday’ and 5th November – Bonfire Night. We have the brisk Yorkshire climate that favours oats over wheat to thank for Parkin. The first mention of it by name can be found in court records from 1728, where one Anne Whittaker was accused of stealing oatmeal to make it. From simple unleavened Anglo-Saxon 'theorf ' or 'tharf ' cakes cooked on a griddle, over time the recipe has been sweetened and spiced to become the treat we know today.

Recipe for Parkin Ingredients • • • • • • • •

200g butter plus extra for greasing 1 large egg 4 tbsp milk 200g golden syrup 85g treacle 85g light soft brown sugar 250g self-raising flour 1 tbsp ground ginger

Method • Heat oven to 160C/140C fan/gas 3. Butter a deep 22cm square cake tin and line with baking parchment. Beat the egg and milk together with a fork. • Gently melt the syrup, treacle, sugar and butter together in a large pan until the sugar has dissolved. Remove from the heat. Mix together the oatmeal, flour and ginger and stir into the syrup mixture, followed by the egg and milk. • Pour the mixture into the tin and bake for 50 mins – 1 hr until the cake feels firm and a little crusty on top. Cool in the tin then wrap in more parchment and foil. Keep for up to five days before eating if you can – it’ll become softer and stickier the longer you leave it, up to two weeks.

3 former residents of Cublington raise funds for Cancer Research My three amazing children Elisabeth, Stewart and David, have cycled 700 miles between them, to raise over £7000 for Cancer Research. This was part of the cancer research Cycle Challenge, to raise funds. They decided to take this on in memory of their father Ian Bundock, who sadly died in 2002 at the age of 53, from cancer. They called themselves Team IGB (Ian George Bundock ) and had an amazing support group of friends cycling with them. A huge thank you to them. The last leg of the Challenge was from Cublington ( our family home) to London and then on to Brighton. The London to Brighton leg of the journey is particularly poignant, as Ian cycled the London to Brighton Bike ride in 1984, to raise funds for British Heart Foundation. Before setting out from Cublington, the team were provided with delicious bacon and sausage buns, coffee and tea by the Unicorn. A big thank you to Paul, Libby and Gary from the Unicorn.

Becoming Stoic

Research shows that when we shift our focus to what we

For those of us who live our lives in the real world, there is one branch of philosophy created just for us: Stoicism. It’s a philosophy designed to make us more resilient, happier, more virtuous and more wise, and as a result, better people, better parents and better professionals. “The chief task in life is simply this: to identify and separate matters so that I can say clearly to myself which are externals not under my control, and which have to do with the choices I actually control. Where then do I look for good and evil? Not to uncontrollable externals, but within myself to the choices that are my own . . .” Epictetus, Greek Philosopher born 50 AD. The single most important practice in Stoic philosophy is differentiating between what we can change and what we can’t. What we have influence over and what we do not. A flight is delayed because of weather— no amount of yelling at an airline representative will end a storm. No amount of wishing will make you taller or shorter or born in a different country. And on top of that, time spent hurling yourself at these immovable objects is time not spent on the things we can change.

Take a Moment to Reflect

It’s completely normal to be experiencing a wide range of emotions. Accepting your feelings is an important first step to building resilience. The simple act of naming your emotions has been found to benefit wellbeing. So, take a moment now to tune into your body and notice how you’re feeling. Circle the emotions that you identify with (source: The Wellness Society, 2020) • • • • • • • • • • •

Anxious Stressed Worried Fearful Low Lonely Overwhelmed Helpless Frustrated Guilty Angry

Personal Tip - remember: It’s okay to feel discomfort. Accepting distress is often the quickest way to feel immediately calmer. If you’re prone to hypothetical worry (i.e., the ‘what if?’ thoughts), you may find it helpful to practice noticing these thoughts and then redirecting your attention to things within your control.

can control, we see meaningful and lasting differences in our wellbeing, health, and performance. So, write down what you have control over inside the circle below. Then, note the things you cannot control outside of the circle, using the table below as inspiration. Personal Tip - You cannot stop hypothetical worries from occurring, but you can control your response to them.

How to Stop Worrying

“Ask yourself: Does this appearance (of events) concern the things that are within my own control or those that are not? If it concerns anything outside your control, train yourself not to worry about it.” – Epictetus Learning how to recognise and reduce anxiety is an extremely helpful life skill. Building Resilience What is Stress and Anxiety?

The terms stress and anxiety are often used

interchangeably. To develop a deeper understanding of mental wellbeing, it’s helpful to understand how they differ. Stress Kelly McGonigal, an expert in the new science of stress, offers us this definition: “Stress is what arises when something we care about is at stake”. Many of us are now in positions where things that matter to us feel more uncertain, which understandably gives rise to our stress response. Stress is best understood as manifesting in the body. It’s the racing heart, sweaty palms and funny tummy we’re all familiar with. Central to the experience of stress is the amygdala, the area of your brain responsible for generating your body’s stress response. But stress is also subjective, and not all people respond in the same way to the same situation. If you’re suffering from high levels of distress triggered by the pandemic, you might continue to feel this way after the virus has passed. Signs of stress include: • • • • • • •

Chest tightness and feeling like you can’t breathe Muscle tension, aches and pains Headaches Difficulty sleeping Restlessness and an inability to relax Heart palpitations Digestive issues

Resource Tip – for more on Kelly McGonigal’s 40 Days to Positive Change you can go onto her free webinar on the subject https://www.spiritmiracle.com/go/40-days-topositive-change-webinar/ Anxiety Anxiety is best described as the unhelpful thinking patterns we experience when our mind fixates on threat, uncertainty and negativity. Anxiety can occur on its own, as a response to stress or it can trigger stress. When it occurs as a response to stress, it can intensify the stress, and, in worst cases, lead to panic attacks. It’s important to understand that you cannot control

anxiety from occurring – this is your brain’s automatic survival mechanism. What matters is learning how to respond to anxiety helpfully, so that you don’t get carried away by it. Resource Tip: the one thing all humans have in common is that each of us wants to be happy, says Brother David Steindl-Rast, a monk and interfaith scholar. And happiness, he suggests, is born from gratitude. This is an inspiring lesson in slowing down, looking where you’re going, and above all, being grateful. https://www.ted.com/ talks/david_steindl_rast_want_to_be_happy_be_grateful Resource Tip: Mindfulness has been proven to improve both physical and mental health in many ways including; lowering anxiety levels, reducing stress and decreasing depression. At the same time mindfulness can help improve memory, boost self-esteem and lower blood pressure. In this clip there is a very simple exercise that you can practise as often as you like, even at work and it takes just a moment of your day; https://www.youtube. com/watch?v=AL83nLOEiPo&feature=youtu.be

A Tool for Managing the Controllable Planning your Information Diet What is your trusted source of information? During times of fear and uncertainty, the very best elements of human nature can prevail, as is the case in these Coronavirus-related good news stories from around the world, demonstrating the power of displaying care and kindness to those less fortunate or able than you in a crisis. So manage the news you get about the pandemic, and focus on some of the positive news that has emerged during the pandemic. Here are some useful trusted news sources as well as some uplifting stories. We also suggest you limit access to your trusted media source to once a day and actively seek out positive stories relating to human endeavor during the pandemic. https://www.who.int/ https://www.gov.uk/coronavirus https://www.elle.com/uk/life-and-culture/g31658888/ coronavirus-covid-19-good-news/

I can always remember taking photographs ever since I was a child and one birthday was given a Kodak Instamatic. In my early 20’s I progressed to an SLR with multiple lenses and then the two boys came along and for a while I found my hands were too full of baby equipment to carry much more. Nature and architecture seem to be my biggest influences. Here are a few from my collection that have captured moments and helped to produce memories that I treasure.
