Condolences

The content of the April edition was (quite rightly) dominated by the arrival and acceleration of the Corona Virus. We had hoped to leave that subject behind this month but as the virus continues it’s relentless and grim march, inevitably it must remain as the main point of focus. The tragic consequences force us to focus mainly on the negatives. It is difficult to draw anything positive from a phenomenon the like of which most of us have never experienced before. The burgeoning loss of life, the enforced isolation, the worrying economic collateral and the loss of freedom that we have always taken for granted are difficult to countenance. There are positives however. Adversity unites communities. People focus more on others rather than themselves. People communicate and work together to support those that need it. This has been been very evident in our community and I am sure similar locally improvised strategies have been implemented in other communities throughout the land. Going forward, it looks as though it will be more of the same for a while. We thank those that continue to work in vital roles. For most of us, however, it will be a case of staying at home. Let’s hope the sun shines! In this month’s edition we have included some ideas and activities to constructively fill your time. Stay safe. And remember, as Sir Winston Churchill said, “If you’re going through hell, keep going!” The Dixon family.

During the great community lock down - where everyone will be asked to sacrifice something, please follow the government guidelines and above all stay safe!

Cublington folk Unusual family predicaments and other strange goings-on in Cublington due to the lockdown The Lightfoots, Michael and Carolyn for instance are living apart. Carolyn living in with Arthur and Michael keeping a safe distance next door but one, isolating together with daughter Louise, a physiotherapist working in the NHS. We’ve reaad that Farmer Tim, (George) is currently sleeping in his shed during every night of the lockdown to raise money via sponsorship for Shelter. www.justgiving.com/fundraising/tim-sleepathon There are five people (that I know of) in the village who are on the government’s list of those most vunerable... quite a high proportion for such a small village I thought? Keep safe and stay well. Spontaneous singing of Happy Birthday ringing out as people’s birthdays (if known) are celebrated in isolation by small crowds of walkers (obviously social distancing). Heartwarming stuff. Lovely little gifts - Flowers, chocolate brownies and cakes delivered to those on the isolation list. What a lovely thought. Thank you. Who is the Easter Bunny? Mysterious gifts of chocolate appeared on my doorstep, I hope everyone else’s too, a very welcome treat from a thoughtful person. Thank you whoever you are. Numerous funnies appearing on my iPhone.... amazing ingenuity of people stuck in isolation.

Your council has now changed

On 1 April your council changed. The new Buckinghamshire Council has replaced all five of the district and county councils in Buckinghamshire, and over the coming weeks and months you’ll start to see some changes as you come across the new look council. What does the new council mean for me? • Th e same services, better together. For most people there will be no change to the day-to-day services you use. This includes bin collections, looking after our elderly and young people, libraries and parking. The focus for the future will be on improving these services as a new council together. • One council. Getting in touch with the council will be simpler because you’ll only need to contact one council for all the services currently provided by the county and district councils. •F ace-to-face advice, support and information from your council through a network of 17 local Council Access Points based at the heart of your local community – in current council offices and libraries across the county. The five council offices in Aylesbury (Walton Street and The Gateway), High Wycombe, Amersham and Denham will be ‘access plus’ points, geared up to handle more complex enquiries. • S tronger links with local communities. Buckinghamshire Council councillors will work closely with local people and community organisations to understand and respond to the key issues affecting their local area through 16 Community Boards. Who will be my local councillor on the new council? There will be 147 councillors elected to Buckinghamshire Council. Elections for the new council will take place on 7 May 2020. Until these newly elected councillors take up their posts, your current elected members from the five existing councils will continue to serve your communities. How can I find out more? For regular news and updates, follow us on Twitter and Facebook @BucksCouncil or find out more on our website at www.buckinghamshire.gov.uk.

1.What did you want to be when you grew up? A firefighter (following my father’s footsteps) 2. What was your first job? Working out of the back of a refrigerated lorry selling frozen meat & vegetables at various markets. 3. Who (alive or dead) would you like to have dinner with and why? (You can have more than one!) Bruce Robinson (alive) & Jack the Ripper (dead). Bruce wrote the definitive book about the Ripper (and wrote and directed Withnail & I…my favourite ever film) and it would be interesting to see if his investigations and research matched the person sat next to him at the table. 4. What historical era would you like to have lived in and why? Edwardian England. The fashion. Everyone should still be wearing hats and suits. 5. Where would you want to live if not where you live now and why? Devon. The sea, the landscape and the people. 6. What is the temptation you wish you could resist? I don’t resist any temptations. 7. What is your favourite book and why? Factotum by Charles Bukowski. What it’s like to be a drunk, struggling writer in 40’s LA in all its winesoaked glory. 8. What is your favourite song and why? Eternal Love by the Sheiks. 9. What is the pet hate that makes your hackles rise? At the moment it’s got to be COVID-19. 10. What is the unlikely interest that engages your curiosity? Birdwatching 11. How long have you lived in Cublington? 13 years.

Answer somewhere in the Crier.

On 9th March our business was thrown into chaos, halls were closing and we had no premises or people to do our classes. Social distancing and isolation meant that we had to get online quickly! For those of you who don’t know us, Ian and I are Personal Trainers and run fitness classes. Our business, Hans-on Health and fitness has been Est 20 years. We were lucky enough to be given an online platform to do our classes through, and with a bit of camera set up work and some tense moments, we got there in the end. It is so important for us to carry on with our classes to bring Team Hans-on together and keep the repartee going, and also for our clients mental and physical wellbeing. Being cooped up in isolation can make us feel sluggish and a little down, but after one of our classes, people are feeling invigorated with the endorphins flowing! With our 1-2-1 clients and classes, we can see them and they can see us, so there is no slacking! Technology is great when it works and fingers crossed it has for us. We welcome new clients to our virtual classes and the following is what we have on offer. Monday

7.30pm 30 min Hiit class – High intensity interval training class (class includes warm up, 20 mins exercise, cool down)

Tuesday

9.30am Mat based Pilates – All levels welcome

7.30pm Circuit Training – Body Weight Exercises including core work, cardio, a lovely stretch and much more!

Wednesday 7.30pm Mat based Pilates – All levels welcome Thursday

You could try your own gentle work out at home. Did you know if you climb 4610 stairs you have climbed the height of Snowdon, this will be going up the Llanberis path way! 1 ) Grab a chair and try sitting down and standing up again, try to do 30 seconds on 30 seconds off, 2 or 3 times. 2 ) Still with your chair, this time facing it, toe tap the seat, lifting those knees up alternately Do it for 30 seconds on and 30 seconds off. 3 ) Grab your brolly, lift it above your head long ways, arms wide and straight, and lean from side to side bending sideways. A great way to stretch the waist and grow a foot taller! 4) Finally give those arms a workout. Grab some cans and do some bicep curls, arms are bent coming in towards your chest and straighten again, same timings as above. If you’re feeling like you now need a longer workout, we can cater for all levels of fitness and ability, please contact us! To join any of our classes or find out more, please email Kathryn or Ian at khanson@hans-on.co.uk and we can give you further information.

The wonky road sign on Reads Lane disappeared!

The large earth bank down Ridings Way towards the old village, planted with flowers and woodland shrubs and foliage.

The pile of rubbish collected from the Litterpick, still not picked up. They have apologised and will pick it up just as soon as they’re able. Other things on the council’s mind right now I think.

Bob says he has at least three hedgehogs visiting his garden at the moment... can anyone beat that?!

A No Cycling sign on the Mound Field gate... has someone been mountain biking over the mound?!! Not allowed on an ancient monument.

Spotted -

So many large trees blown down in the high winds last month. Real huge splits down the trunks of some... such a shame for those lovely old trees.

Lovely lambs gambolling in the fields down by the smallholding and Jane A’s two cute black lambs.

CORONAVIRUS

Two new dog gates in the field boundaries below the church. Andy Peck’s handiwork I think... nice one. The playing/cricket field at Orchard Ground being cut and tended in spite of the fact little or no cricket will be played this season. Well done guys.. it looks fab.

Orchard Ground Covid-19 news & general items of interest •M artyn Waters has done a brilliant job hunting out potential grants available from Sports England who have recently circulated details of their Community Emergency Fund which will provide small grants of up to £5,000 to local community groups and organisations to help with the impact of Covid-19. This fund helps to cover some of the ongoing costs that groups are having to pay during this current time when income is likely to be reduced during the period 1/03/2020 to 31/07/2020. I’ve submitted a bid for £4,051 for some loss of income from fees/rents and bookings, our continuing expenses for utilities, insurance and maintenance costs. I’ve included some costs that are usually covered by the cricket club: mowing of the cricket pitch, outfield and surrounding areas on a ‘need to do basis.’ •E vents planned for 2020 All Cancelled until further notice. Peter’s time at university, reading history, was therefore sponsored by the British Army. When he left Durham in 1987 Peter attended the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst, and was commissioned into 16th/5th The Queen’s Royal Lancers. He was loved by his soldiers and served as a second lieutenant, lieutenant and finally as captain, mainly based in Germany but he also served with the regiment in the first Gulf war in 1991. The regiment was in an armoured reconnaissance role and so was among the first troops into Iraq, where they had been told to expect a 60-70% casualty rate. Thankfully, of course, that was not to be the case.

Peter Clunie

Peter will probably be remembered by all who knew him as the consummate English gentleman. He was a highly respected captain in the Army, serving his country in the first Gulf War, a lawyer, a man who loved country pursuits – hunting and shooting - a horse and dog lover, an outstanding skier, and someone who enjoyed travel abroad as well as holidays in the UK, as long as he could take his beloved dogs with him. When someone dies so young it can feel as though it is a story half told, a life cut short, but it is sometimes said that it is not the length of a life that matters but more what we do with our lives whilst we are here. Peter filled his life with enough adventure, exploration, immense responsibility and, of course, love and respect for others that could fill a lifetime twice as long. Peter John Holland Clunie was born on 18 May 1966 in Victoria, on Hong Kong Island, the second son of Tom and Janet Clunie. Tom had served in Hong Kong as a Colonial Police Officer since 1948 while Janet had come to the territory in 1960 to teach in the government education department. They were married in 1962. By the time Peter was born his father was in his final post in Hong Kong as Director of Criminal Investigation and Head of CID. Tom and Janet, with sons David and Peter moved to the UK in 1967 and set up home in Kingston-upon-Thames where a third son, Christopher was born. There followed a three-year stint in the Bahamas where Peter’s father took the role as the last colonial British Commissioner of Police ahead of the Bahamas gaining independence in 1971, so Peter’s formative years were spent in a West Indian idyll. The family returned to the UK in 1971. Older brother David started at King’s College Junior School in Wimbledon where Peter joined him three years later, progressing to the senior school in due course. He went on to gain a place at the University of Durham, again following in his older brother’s footsteps. Just before going up to Durham Peter completed the Brigade of Guards’ very tough potential officers’ course known as Brigade Squad. For a few months Peter was therefore technically Guardsman Clunie of the Scots Guards.

That year, changed Peter’s life, with serendipity taking a major role. One of Peter’s best friends from Durham, Barney, had a girlfriend who was organising a skiing trip with a group of friends. One of the group was a girl Lucy Holt. Peter had planned to join skiing holiday but because of the conflict in the Gulf had to withdraw from the trip. Fortunately, Operation Desert Storm was over quite quickly so Peter found himself back in time to join the skiers on their planned trip. On the night before the trip the party all met in a pub in Fulham, and there Peter met Lucy. In early 1992 Peter went on a trip to Australia to join Lucy who was staying with her sister Sally and her husband on their property. It was here that Peter proposed. On their return to England the plans were laid for there wedding on 29th August 1992 in Tackley, a beautiful village just north of Oxford where Lucy had grown up. A few months after the wedding Peter left the Army to pursue a career in the Law as a solicitor. This meant that, after the inevitable separations of Army life Peter and Lucy could be together, looking after their growing menagerie of animals. After completing his Law Conversion Course and a Legal Practice Course, Peter began his legal career at D.J. Freeman and Co. in the City. After living first in Kingston and then in Battersea, Peter and Lucy moved to Cublington in 1998, from where Peter commuted to the City for over ten years. He subsequently he moved to Howes Percival in Milton Keynes for a more relaxed lifestyle. Peter was a great entertainer who loved good food, great wines, a cigar, and enjoyed nothing greater than the company of family and friends, fellow army officers and of course, more than anything, the love of his wife Lucy. Peter retired in 2019 and he and Lucy had planned to spend the next few years holidaying around the UK and abroad and enjoying their country life with their horses and dogs. Sadly, it was not to be as Peter was diagnosed with cancer and despite the best medical efforts to treat him, he succumbed to the disease and died on 19th March, just six days after his mother Janet. Peter is survived by his wife Lucy and brothers David and Christopher, as well as a host of animals including Anki, Bear and Remy, who will wonder where Peter has gone and why he has not come to visit her or her new foal, Petra. Peter Clunie, born 18 May 1966, died 19 March 2019

Post Office services It has been many years since Cublington last had a functioning Post Office and now seems like a good time to bring it back. For those of you who don't know I run an online jewellery business so I am still trying to send out orders on a daily basis from Wingrave Post Office. Visit www.colortjewellery. com to see what we have to offer (Shameless plug). In order to reduce the need of residents having to go to the Post Office I don't mind taking letters , parcels and Online order returns to Wingrave Post Office. But if you need to use the other services offered by the Post Office I can do those on residents behalf too, some may be more tricky than others but I am sure that we can sort something out, I have worked closely with Deva at Wingrave for nearly 5 years now and he is very accommodating and helpful. I also have his phone number in case we have any questions. Wingrave Post Office also has a fully stocked shop too so if any residents require anything from there as well I can pick these up too. Again if residents require anything specific please let me know and I will se what Deva has to offer. Here is how it will work: 1) If a resident has something they would like from the Post Office they can send me a message. If they are not sure on price I can advise them on which service to use and how much it would likely cost. 2) If it requires wrapping I can do this as well as I have extensive stocks of Brown paper, bubble wrap, boxes and tape. 3) They can leave the item on their doorstep for me to pick up. 4) If a resident requires a service I can contact Wingrave to see if they can offer it. 5) I can keep a record of how much I have spent then we can settle up later. 6) I usually go to the Post Office at around 4PM everyday Monday to Friday. I hope that this helps as it felt like a sensible situation to removing the need for more people having to go to the Post Office than is absolutely necessary. Colin Antosiewicz 07952431488

Minutes of a meeting of Cublington Parish Council held on 24th March 2020 by telephone conference call at 7.30pm Present: Cllr H Vale (Chairman) Cllr M Reilly Cllr G Antosiewicz Cllr J Merriman Cllr S Morgan In attendance: In attendance: Mr M Joy (Clerk) 1. Apologies Cllr N Glover 2. Minutes of last meeting The minutes of the last meeting held on 14th January 2020 were discussed by the meeting and duly signed by the Chairman 3. Reports Neighbouring Policing Team Reports are posted regularly on theCublington website. http://www.cublington.com/ County and District Councillor Cllr Glover’s report was presented to the meeting. Bucks CC is in regular contact with CPC concerning the coronavirus crisis. Very little to report upon . All our roads need attention. It is the same all over the country. The council has invested a lot of money into repairing potholes over the last few years and we are gradually catching up but not as quickly as we or the public would like. This year an extra £1m has been put into ‘plane and patch’ to help our roads recover from the winter rain. This is in addition to the previous £4m already proposed for plane and patch. To give you an idea of what we are up against the excessive rainfall this year has caused your council to make hundreds of repairs each week. Despite all this work we are up against the difficulty caused by our clay-based soil which becomes so wet that new fillings are ejected. Clay’s very slow draining nature means we must wait longer for the ideal conditions to be sure of a lasting repair. Really dangerous holes are given attention. £15 million will be spent on Bucks roads this year plus more on pavements. The government has given us a one-off special grant of £1.2 million for this year. 4. Accounts 4.1 The following invoices were passed for payment since the last meeting: Jan Clerk’s salary £177.90 Jan E-ON £124.94 Jan Forde and McHugh £650.40 LED light replacement Feb E-On £124.94 Feb Clerk’s salary £177.90 Mar M Waters disbursement £299.38 OG decorating Mar K Sletcher cost re OG £3,775.64 4.2 Accounts

Accounts to 9th March and forecast to 31st March 2020 were presented to the meeting. The forecast shows a small deficit of £57.13 . The deficit is a lot smaller than previous forecasts because costs relating to a lease (estimated at £1,500) with Orchard Ground/new charity and planning costs relating to North Field (£1,500) have not yet been incurred. Reserves stand at approx. £14,000. 5. Orchard Ground Report/ Charity Status and North Field Orchard Ground : The facility has been decorated and is looking good. There is a concern about the lower income this year in view of the coronavirus effect. There will be no cricket or tennis for the foreseeable future which might affect the rents. Both clubs will lose income as subscriptions are due this time of year. As and when the playing of sport is allowed there will be pro rata subscription income. Income arising from social events will be dramatically down due to the Government restrictions. The cricket club has intimated it has the funds available to keep the field mown . The meeting was concerned about the finances of OG and felt CPC must be able to financially support this facility so projects planned for next year must be carefully considered and in cases delayed. Charity Status/North Field A quote of between £1,500 and £2,500 had been received concerning the drafting of a lease with Orchard Ground/new charity . In view of the financial situation of OG it was felt the Council should delay this work for the foreseeable future. A revised masterplan for North Field to support the submission for planning permission had been distributed before the meeting. Again, in view of the concern about the finances of OG it was decided to delay this matter for the foreseeable future. 6 Planning Permissions 18/04085/APP Lakeside Business Units Formation of new vehicular access onto Reads Lane . There has still been no decision made on this application .The due date was in September 2019 . The meeting felt the entrance onto Wing Road was working well and asked that we go back again to the agent and planning office to say we would not oppose a revised planning application. The current application is for a new entrance onto Reads Lane. 19/04435/ACL -Wing PC – Wing Caravan Site – application for certificate of lawfulness for existing caravan site. This application was to establish AVDC/BCC retained the planning permission to use the site for eight residential plots ,car parking, work area, amenity block and additional landscaping. The current owner does not have the benefit of this planning permission. CPC was concerned that if the application is successful the owner may site caravans and build on the site. When challenged they might rely on any statutory or European Court of Human Rights obligations upon BCC to provide for travellers in the area and perhaps suggest BCC leases back the land etc. CPC has written to the CEO of AVDC and BCC to seek assurances they are not aware of such intention and would oppose it. 20/00964/APP 1 Roses Close Conversion and extension of existing dwelling and attached

double garage to form a separate dwelling house and construction of single storey detached double garage/garden store (part retrospective amendment to approved application 19/01176/APP) – no objection as the foot print of the unit has not altered. 7. Village Matters 7.1 Traffic Calming: Quiet Lanes A member of the public had sent in details of an initiative where lanes could be classified as ‘Quiet Lanes’ . It was agreed we should apply for this status on the Dunton Road , Reads Lane and Ridings Way . Cllr Antosiewicz offered to make the application. Option 1 A from the feasibility report prepared by Transport for Bucks Cllr Reilly had made an application for funding from the Local Area Forum last year relating to Option 1A this work covered Edge markings, Signage, coloured surfacing , detailed design and obtaining quotations from Transport for Bucks Supply Chain Partners and Supervision. Estimated cost £7,500. LAF have now responded apologising for the delay stating it would consider our application and asked how much could CPC contribute to the improvements . It was agreed to offer 10% contribution. To continue with this application at this stage is not committing CPC to the project. Cllr Reilly offered to respond to LAF. Speed watch signs and mobile signs were discussed, and in view of the costs deferred to later in the year. HGV Traffic It was noted that there has been a significant increase in HGV movements in the village. A lot of these movements were going into Lockharts Farm. The drivers of these vehicles have complete disregard to other road users and drive in an aggressive manner . Cllr Morgan said

Scott Wharton In loving Memory of Scott Wharton who sadly passed away very suddenly at home with his wife Sacha on the 21st April 2020 aged 48.

he would contact the HGV officer at AVDC for assistance, and following the officer’s advice, we would consider other measures. 7.2 Street Lighting: nothing to report 7.3 Speed watch : nothing happening due the Government restrictions on movements. 7.4 Planters : It was agreed to buy four planters at a cost of £40 each to be located at the village gates. 7.5 Elections : These have been delayed for a year in view of the emergency. 7.6 Best Kept Village Competition: cancelled due to the emergency. 7.7 VE Day celebrations : cancelled due to the emergency 7.8 General : The CPC is very grateful to everyone in the village who are assisting residents who are staying at home, not going out or have a long-term condition. Cublington Support Group, led by Charles Toosey, has been set up by volunteers, who are coordinating those in need or who are high risk. Playground Cllr Merriman has been reviewing the position of its use during the restriction on movements. (Subsequent to the meeting the playground has been closed due to Government instructions) Post Crisis It was agreed there would be a village event once the crisis has passed . The next meeting of the Parish Council will take place on Tuesday 5th May 2020 at 7.30pm by telephone conference call . The Annual General Meeting will be deferred, and we are awaiting legislation from the Government to cover this matter.

Walking in isolation Recently I received a chain email about a poem exchange. I normally, like most people, would have put it straight in the trash but very weirdly just hours before the email came through... I was out walking and wrote the first line of my first ever poem. I thought you might like to read it. Ed Has anyone else got any poetry they’ve ever written?

The only sound I hear Is the wind rushing past my ear Birdsong and an occasional fly past Buzzy on their way to be Somewhere, I know not where No cars, no planes, just clean air An unintended consequence We can’t make any sense To the NHS we are beholden Remember this... the silence was golden

A sign of hope?! The refurbished Cublington Sign was re-revealed last month as the protective covering was removed, the last of the varnish was picked off, sanded and some tlc given by treating it with natural hardwood oils, a mixture of linseed oil, sunflower oil, jojoba oil, candilla wax and bees wax. A further protective coat will be applied every year before the winter storms. To see this image in colour - go online at Issuu.com and search for Cublington Crier #395

We’ve been reading the book “Wilding” by Isabella Tree. One particular thing that it included, that I hadn’t known, was that as it grows old a tree sometimes lowers its branches towards the ground for stability. It’s made me start to look out for the older trees around here and given that we’re all currently spending more time walking around the locality would be interested to know what “old” trees we have in and around Cublington – and which of these is the oldest. The oldest oak I’ve noticed is in Reads Lane, which looks to be more than a few hundred years old – and is starting to lower its bottom limbs. Any other candidates? Natalie Sheridan

The best apps to keep you connected with family and friends during lockdown Thanks to technology, isolation doesn't have to be completely isolating. The UK is officially on lockdown, severely limiting our movements in an attempt to slow the spread of Covid-19. Socialising with anyone outside your household is now prohibited, with police able to disperse any group meetings. But in the age of social media and digital technology, we are at least all able to stay in touch with one another, even if we can't pop round for a cup of tea. Here are a few apps you can all download to stay connected. WhatsApp Starting with the most obvious - and useful - of all. Most of us will already have WhatsApp downloaded, the Facebook-owned instant messaging service that works on all smart phones (unlike apps like FaceTime). WhatsApp has so many features beyond its obvious texting facilities, like easy-to-use group video calls and voice notes you can leave one another when you just want to hear another human's voice. Houseparty This is one app that's gone somewhat viral since the social distancing measures were put in place earlier this month. Allowing you to be a full-blown social butterfly without ever leaving your sofa, you can drop in and out of your mates' group video chats whenever you fancy it - probably making some new virtual friends in the process. There are games you can play through the app too, including Heads Up and Quick Draw. Words With Friends Used to watching Countdown with your mum but now finding yourself unable to pop round after work? It's little routines like this that families may miss the most during lockdown. But apps like Words With Friends can help to bridge that social gap a little. If you both download it and make accounts, you can challenge each other to Scrabble-style word games that can play out over hours or weeks, depending on how addicted you get. Zoom Zoom was created as digital conference calling software, but its popularity has rocketed in recent weeks outside of work circumstances too. The software is now being used for everything from streaming live yoga sessions to hosting family quiz nights. For standard users, sessions are capped at 40 minutes - but you can pay to upgrade for longer conversations if you need them. Google Hangouts Much like Zoom, Google Hangouts is geared perfectly towards team meetings at work but is doubling up as a socialising tool during these difficult times we're facing. All you'll need is a Gmail email address to get started. Netflix Party If your favourite thing to do with your mates is usually to sit and binge-watch Netflix documentaries, the lockdown may have thrown a big spanner in the works. This is where Netflix Party comes in handy. You can watch Netflix films and TV shows at the same time as one another, with the option to add a chat feature so you can express your outrage/shock/delight in real time. All you need to do is download the Google extension from Netflix Party - only one person in your party needs to do this, and they can share the link to watch the programme or film with anyone they like.

E V E N M O R E T H I N G S TO D O D U R I N G L O C K D OW N 1. Write a novel Is it time for you to create rather than consuming? If you’ve always wanted to write a novel but never found the time or inspiration, this is your chance. Apparently Shakespeare wrote King Lear in isolation during the plague, so maybe this lockdown is when you’ll write your opus.

11. Go to 500 other museums or galleries If you’re still looking for more galleries or museums to visit, Google’s arts and culture collection has virtual tours of 500 top attractions around the world, including national galleries from around the world, individual artist museums, and even the Eiffel Tower.

If you’re not really sure where to start, there are free courses online on how to start writing to get you on track.

12. Have a karaoke night Missing karaoke night with your friends? You can still do it from home. Apps like AirConsole let you turn your smartphone into a mic, and sing your favourite hits with the usual gang and practice new songs to sing at the bar once lockdown is lifted.

2. Tour ancient Rome You may feel cut off from the rest of the world, but you can time travel. Current technology means that you can explore other cities and even other times online, such as a virtual tour of ancient Rome which takes you through the forum, capitoline hill, and famous monuments. 3. Write a play or short film Perhaps your work is better realised by actors rather than staying on the page? You’ll be pleased to know that the BBC is on the hunt for original scripts about self-isolation that they can turn into short films. If you’re daunted by that task, you could try out free screenwriting courses to learn the ropes and (hopefully) catapult you into stardom after your first film is made.

13. Brush up on the latest publications If you’ve always been fascinated by academia or a specific area within it, this is a great time to read the latest publications and get up to speed on the latest developments with your area. JSTOR is allowing free access to thousands of journals during lockdown. 14. Try a fitness challenge Missing the gym? There are plenty of fitness challenges you can try out from home, so you can emerge from lockdown fitter, leaner, or stronger. Please read the article elsewhere in this edition from Hans-On Health and Fitness.

4. Learn to paint Have any paint and brushes lying around? Have a look at the timeless Joy of Painting on YouTube.

15. Arrange a Houseparty If you still want to meet with your friends – do it at a virtual Houseparty.

5. Write a song If you have a musical persuasion, you could channel your current emotions into a song or even an entire album of them. If you’re not sure where to start a songwriting course could get you into the right frame of mind, and you can even start making some Spotify playlists in the meantime to get inspired.

The app allows for large group video chats so you can get together for a drink, a chat, or just to see some friendly faces for a couple of hours.

6. Visit the MoMA A huge number of art galleries and museums around the world have digitised their collections and are now offering free virtual tours. New York’s MoMA is just one of the incredible galleries that you can visit from your own sofa, where you can enjoy Pollock and Monet without the crowds. 7. Explore the Uffizi If you prefer Botticelli to Pollock, you can tour the Uffizi in Florence, arguably one of the best collections of Renaissance art in the world. You can take your time looking at Botticelli’s Birth of Venus, Caravaggio’s Medusa, and Titian’s Venus of Urbino without even getting on a plane. 8. Enjoy the Musée d’Orsay Experiencing these venues from your home does mean that you can visit multiple galleries from different countries or even different continents in the same afternoon. Paris’ Musée d’Orsay is home to an incredible collection of Van Gogh and Cezanne’s artistic masterpieces. Take a look around online. 9. Pop into the Tate Perhaps once you’ve enjoyed Florence, New York, and Paris, you can come to London to see the Tate Britain for free. Although you’ll miss out on the lovely river walk to the gallery, you can drop in at any time and see your favourite pieces from the comfort of your own home. 10. Experience the British Museum The British Museum is home to incredible artefacts from around the world and is still open to virtual visitors. Exhibits that are usually packed are free to roam around at any time, so you can brush up on your Egyptian knowledge, see the controversial Parthenon Marbles, or just wile away a few hours.

16. Get a penpal You probably fell out of contact with your high school penpal from French exchange but that doesn’t mean you can’t try again. Connect with people around the world and see how the lockdown is playing out in other countries (or ignore coronavirus entirely and chat about the weather). You can find penpals online and get started straight away to broaden your horizons and make new connections. 17. Cook something new One good thing about being home a lot is that you can finally spend time cooking things from scratch. You can find great recipes online, even if you’re on a limited budget. Jack Monroe’s recipes are specifically created for people on strict budgets or relying on food banks, while Miguel Barclay is best known for his one pound meals. We have included our own recipe article elsewhere. 18. Play a board game Board game lovers will be pleased to know that there are ways to play your favourite games online, so you don’t have to wait for the lockdown to end to try out your new Scythe strategy or to finally play Terraforming Mars with a friend. Websites like Tabletopia have free accounts for players, but you may need to pay to play some of the more popular or newer games. 19. Learn a language Always wanted to speak Italian? Intrigued by Norwegian? Think that Mandarin will be useful for work, or perhaps German? Lockdown gives you plenty of time to dedicate to learning a new language, brushing up on vocabulary, and testing out pronunciation. 20. Go to the aquarium It’s almost impossible to recreate the strange grace and tranquility of aquariums but not entirely.

Although they’re closed to the public, Monterey Bay Aquarium have added a number of live cams to let you keep an eye on the jellyfish, kelp forest, coral reef, and even the penguins, completely free. 21. Visit the opera Escape from the news cycle by immersing yourself in the drama of an opera performance, without even leaving the house. After the closure of non-essential businesses, multiple opera houses like the Met Opera have started streaming performances. Perfect if you’re a long-time opera lover or even someone who’s never been to the opera but has always been curious about it. 22. Deep clean your house Between dusty skirting boards, dirty tiling, and stained carpets, your home can offer days of distraction if you feel like doing that deep clean you’ve been putting off. There are plenty of online cleaning guides if the task looks too big, and focusing on one room at a time will help you divide up the work. 23. Declutter your home Being stuck at home can make you rethink how much of your stuff you really need. Do you really wear all the clothes spilling out of your wardrobe? And do you think you’ll really re-read those GCSE essays sitting in a box upstairs? You can decide what to donate and what to throw out, ready for a full clear out when the lockdown is lifted. 24. Build a medieval city If you loved Sims and Game of Thrones, why not combine the two by building your own medieval city. It’s a great way to generate fantasy maps for gaming, writing, or just to wonder whether your walled city should have circular or square guard-towers. 25. Scare yourself in a creepy library If you’ve always been fascinated by the inspiration for Lovecraft, horror films, and far too many conspiracy theories, you can now read a library of 1,600 digitised horror and paranormal books online. The Ritman Library has allowed free access to these pre-1900 books focused on alchemy, astrology, and magic, thanks to a generous donation from Dan Brown himself. 26. Walk through Paris or London You can’t jump on a plane, but you can still see some of the world’s most famous views thanks to Google street view. Feast your eyes on Paris from the Sacre Coeur or take a look at the Thames from the top of the Shard. You can even take a walk along the river and see if Google’s cameras captured anything unusual. 27. Watch a gig If you’re itching to go to a gig or think you’re going to miss festivals this summer, you can actually watch plenty of them on YouTube. Watch classics like Nirvana Unplugged, Radiohead’s Glastonbury set in 1997, or Portishead accompanied by an orchestra and enjoy your own personalised lineup. 28. Stretch out with a yoga class If you’re trying to de-stress and stay healthy during lockdown, you’ll be pleased to know that plenty of yoga studios are now streaming online classes for you to join in with. A lot of studios are still running paid classes, but others, such as Digme Fitness, run free live sessions on social media. Perfect for some low-cost self care. 29. Go to the theatre When you can’t go to the theatre, let the theatre come to you. Recorded performances are nothing new, but some platforms like Marquee are offering free trials so that you can see whether it’s something you’d want to watch on a more regular basis. 30. Visit a mystery house Even more esoteric attractions are now offering virtual tours – you may not have heard of the Winchester Mystery House, but it’s certainly one of the stranger homes that you can explore online. Built by Sarah Winchester after receiving instructions from her deceased husband (and a changing cast of other ghosts), the former-7 storey mansion is an architectural oddity and has plenty for you to see.

31. Solve a mystery True crime fans can immerse themselves in mysteries or even start solving them. There are plenty of online communities like Reddit’s Unresolved Mysteries, where mystery fans get together to swap theories and combine information to try to get to the bottom of old cold cases. 32. Start a blog This could be a great time to build your audience, especially if you have relatively cheap, indoor hobbies that you can share. Interest in pastimes like cooking and board games has shot up over recent weeks – if your hobbies are trending, why not set up a blog and share your knowledge? You can set up a WordPress account and blog for free, and take it from there. 33. Learn first aid It’s good to be prepared for an emergency, especially when urgent care centres are overwhelmed or you may not want to leave self-isolation for a relatively minor injury. You can learn basic first aid online, for free with FutureLearn. 34. Discover your roots Wonder where your family was in the flu pandemic of 1918? Tracing your family tree can unearth lost memories or even distant relatives. Start by learning about genealogy and you can discover more about yourself and your background. 35. Understand nutrition Comfort eating during lockdown is understandable, but won’t help you enter summer happier and healthier. Understanding nutrition and how food affects your body, health, and mood, will help you make better decisions for your overall wellbeing and even better use of your current food cupboard. 36. Plan a holiday If you’re lucky enough to have a job that lets you work from home for this time, you’ve probably saved money on your commute and buying lunch each day. Why not calculate how much you’ve saved through the lockdown and put it towards a holiday? 37. Have a kitchen dance party You can definitely have too much screen time. If workouts aren’t your thing or you just miss a good dance, put together a list of your favourite songs and dance around your kitchen. Don’t worry, nobody’s watching! 38. Sew a teddy bear Recreate a favourite childhood toy or just upcycle some old clothing by sewing your own teddy bear. As long as you have some fabric that you can use (perhaps some socks or an old t-shirt) and a small sewing kit, you can get started. 39. Improve your communication skills Worried that being home by yourself is eroding your communication skills? You can actually improve them while you’re at home to help you smooth over workplace tensions, excel at group work, and add in-demand soft skills to your CV. 40. Read or listen to a book If your new year’s resolution was to read more, you can definitely achieve that this year. You can finally tackle that huge stack of novels or you can find something interesting on Many Books. If you prefer audiobooks, try out Audible for free. 41. Start a virtual book club Want to chat about your book afterwards? Start a virtual book club! You can agree on free books and get together for a chat and yet more recommendations. It’s a great way to stay in touch with friends or make new ones. 42. Try bird watching You might have heard that nature is taking back cities on lockdown, from wild boar in Italy to goats in Llandudno. If you want to get a little closer to nature, you can start with your own back garden. Resources like eBird can help you get started.

Lockdown Menu ideas !

Are you struggling with ideas for meals during this lockdown period? I know I am. I could do with a few new ideas so here’s some for you. A few of the Dixon family favourites to try…..

Smoked Mackerel Pate

Ingredients A packet of smoked mackerel (skin off, deboned) Squeeze of lemon juice Handful of dill, finely chopped 3 tbsp of sour cream ( or until you get a nice creamy consistency) Large knob of butter Grilled slices of ciabatta Method Flake the mackerel, add the lemon juice, dill, and sour cream, season with black pepper and give it a mix. Melt the butter. Half fill ramekins with the mix, flatten the top, pour in some butter to cover the mixture. Chill and serve with the ciabatta……. Delicious !

Teriyaki Salmon

Ingredients 2 salmon fillets 4-5 tbsp dark soy sauce 1 lime, zest and juice 1 small chilli 2 tbsp maple syrup 1 fat garlic clove, finely chopped 1 chunk of ginger, finely chopped 1 sheet of egg noodles bunch of coriander, chopped 1 tbsp sesame oil extra lime juice

Method 1. Heat some olive oil in a pan and fry the ginger, garlic and chopped chilli. 2. Add the zest and juice of the lime and pour in the soy sauce. Add the maple syrup and cook for a few minutes until reduced and sticky. 3. Meanwhile, pan-fry the two pieces of salmon for 2 minutes each side in a hot griddle pan. 4. When the sauce is reduced add the salmon to the teriyaki sauce frying pan. 5. Cook and drain the noodles, adding the sesame oil, seasoning and coriander and a squeeze of lime. Serve the salmon on a bed of noodles with more chopped coriander.

16th Cublington Horticultural Show 2020 Spiced Parsnip Cake recipe Ingredients 340g Tub soft cheese 60g Icing Sugar 1 ½ Lemon zest 180ml Sunflower oil, plus extra for greasing 220g Parsnips (about3) 250g Plain Flour 2 ½tsp Baking powder 2 tsp Mixed spice plus extra for dusting ¼ tsp Salt 3 Eggs 230ml Milk 1 Orange zest & 2 tbsp juice 260g Light soft Brown Sugar 155g Desiccated coconut 100g Raisins

Enjoy!!!!

Method 1. First make the icing. Beat the soft cheese in a bowl until soft. Gently fold in the icing sugar, zest of 1 lemon and a pinch of salt. Be careful not to overmix as the cheese will become too soft. Cover and chill. Preheat the oven to 200C, gas mark 6. Grease and line a 23cm loose based, deep round cake tin, then peel and grate the parsnips. 2. In a bowl sift together the flour, baking powder, mixed spice and salt. In another bowl, combine the eggs, milk, orange zest and juice, oil and sugar. Tip in the flour mixture, grated parsnip, desicated coconut and raisins; thoroughly combine. 3. Pour the mixture into the prepared tin, cover with foil and bake for 30 minutes, then remove the foil and cook for a further 25-35 minutes, until the cake is firm to the touch and a skewer inserted into the centre comes out mostly clean. Leave to cool in the tin for 10 minutes then turn out onto a wire rack. When completely cool, spread the chilled icing over the top and dust with a little more mixed spice and the remaining lemon zest.

A huge thank you... To the forty or so volunteers - the Cublington Support Group, who are helping the twenty three families, who are isolating, shielding or in enforced lockdown. From standing in shopping queues to Post Office services, to delivering wonderful little gifts to brighten the week, to just chat, sing Happy Birthday, walking the dog, lending books and jigsaws, delivering from the shop that’s sprung up... nothing is too much trouble for the Cublington Support Group. Your village salutes you. If anyone needs anything, please don’t hestitate to ask.

The National Theatre has launched a new way for audiences to access its productions online while it is closed. National Theatre At Home offers content including NT Live productions available to watch for free on YouTube, and resources from the National Theatre Collection being made available online to schools and universities. A selection of NT Live productions, recordings of stage shows which have previously be screened in cinemas, will be made available on the National Theatre's YouTube channel from Thursday (2 April). Productions are shown every Thursday at 7pm, and then available for seven days.

An average of 70 people per day were seriously injured (25,511) on the roads in 2018 – the vast majority of whom would have required hospital treatment. To reduce the number of road casualties during these unprecedented times, the Take Extra Care campaign urges all road users to only travel when absolutely essential. For those who must, the plea is to do everything they can to avoid collisions and casualties, including: • Always drive at an appropriate speed - this should be appropriate to the distance you can see to be clear and not necessarily at the speed limit. Remember it’s a limit not a target! • Always wear a seatbelt • Never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs • Never use a mobile phone behind the wheel - now you can get a 3 month ban and a £200 fine - not worth the risk If you do have an Emergency vehicle behind you with ‘blues & twos” remember to signal your intention to pull over in a safe place. Not up the kerb unless absolutely safe to do so. Also remember an Emergency Vehicle can only overtake you if safe to do so. Stay Safe - the pressure on NHS resources is stretched almost to breaking point. Take extra care out there From your friendly resident Driving Instructor Also a note to anyone who will be having their 17th Birthday coming up soon they can start learning their Theory ready for use on the road when they start lessons, and the Theory Test. I have an excellent ‘App’ which I can give them access to contact me Di Grace Adept Driving School on 07866370330

Martina collects my ironing every Tuesday and returns it on Thursday. Great job, never had any problems. Martina is always reliable, accommodating and cheerful. When my washing machine broke Martina took all the laundry and ironing, a great service, I can not recommend her highly enough. Debbie (Cublington resident)
