A big thank you I wonder what 2019 will bring us? More Global warming? (What a summer we had eh?!) A continuation of the worrying Brexit pantomime no doubt! A global trade war, or recession? All perhaps may be the case, but not in this Crier! Instead we're opting for a more uplifting, lighter edition featuring ways to enjoy life, relax, de-stress, live life well and look at the lighter side of life with laughter, and jokes aplenty. After all, don't they say that laughter is the very best medicine. We're going to be optimistic, not pessimistic, happy not sad. It's going to be alright. You've got to laugh - otherwise we'd all end up being so depressed! So -Great news to start off with - the French are back at the Unicorn for a few days! Beinvenue Eric! Make sure you don't miss out on the Eric experience! You certainly won't regret it. Music is uplifting too. Good for the soul. (See Who Am I inside!) Last year the very local MustBMad charity ( of which Gary was a trustee) closed down and donated the last few thousand pounds to the Chiltern Music Therapy charity. Gary went with other trustees and watched the donated new instruments and equipment in use in an Alzheimer's therapy session and really saw the power of music. Patients suddenly came to life and we saw glimpses of recognition and delight. If you ever want an uplifting experience follow the link below and witness this power of music. Teddy, a dementia sufferer, was gradually retreating into himself until the day he heard a particular song on the car radio, caught on the dash cam - very heartwarming stuff!

to all our contributors over the last year, we couldn't make the Crier what it is without you all. Any items of interest please send them in.

What a generous lot you are... I notice because it's all reported somewhere inside The Crier that huge sums of money have been raised recently on various initiatives. From the Carol Singing for Cancer Research to the British Legion Appeal around Armistice Day, from The Cabaret Evening for OG and Help for Heroes, The Dog Walkers Calendar for OG and Canine Partners and the Xmas Craft sale for Canine Partners itself... Walks and evening events for MacMillan Cancer ...literally thousands of pounds. Thank you one and all.

Re: Planning application Lakeside Business Units - URGENT ACTION REQUIRED

18/04085/APP | Formation of new vehicular access onto Reads Lane and non-compliance with condition 12 of 00/02755/APP, to allow the re-use of the original access point to the site (part retrospective) | Lakeside Business Units Wing Road Cublington Buckinghamshire Good morning, I am not too sure if you are aware after the works carried out to the front of Lakeside Business Units, they have submitted a revised planning application for a new access of Reads Lane, to allow the re-use of an original access point to the site (retrospective). In order to raise awareness about in the village and to make sure we get as many people as possible to object to the revised planning application and illegal activities they have carried out clearing the front of the site and making the front of the site now an “eye sore”. HOPEFULLY WITH PARISH COUNCIL AND LOCAL COUNCILLOR SUPPORT, AND LOT OF STRONG OBJECTIONS FROM VILLAGERS ETC, WE CAN STOP THIS REVISED PLANNING APPLICATION OBTAINING APPROVAL FOR AN ACCESS ONTO READS LANE (WHICH IF IT DID, WOULD BE A REAL TRAGEDY).

Nutty oat shortbread (cuts into 8 slices)

50g plain flour 50g rolled porridge oats 75g butter (block butter cold from the fridge) 35g light brown muscovado sugar 25g of either chopped roasted hazelnuts ( you can buy these in a packet) or 25g desiccated coconut • Place the flour, oats and sugar in to a bowl • Cut the butter up into small pieces and add to the flour • Rub the butter into the flour mixture till it resembles breadcrumbs • Add the nuts or coconut and mix in well • Tip the mixture into a round 16 cm shallow tin (something like a sponge cake tin works well) • Use your fingers to press into an even, compact layer • Prick it all over with a fork • Bake for about 25/30 minutes until golden brown in a 180 oC oven. • Cut into fingers when it comes out of the oven and then allow to cool in the tin.

Harissa spiked houmous

- Serves4-6

Homemade houmous is so easy to make and is much lower in fat than the shop-bought version (7g fat, 111 kcals)

1 x 400g can chickpeas, rinsed and drained 2-3 tablespoons olive oil 1 garlic clove, crushed Lemon juice , to taste 1-tablespoon harissa paste (if possible try and get the Belazu Rose harissa in a jar, it is milder than some of the other brands) 1-tablespoon tomato puree • Put ¾ of the chickpeas in a food processor with 2 tablespoons of olive oil, garlic and half a cup of water • Blitz until smooth, adding a little more water if necessary to make a thick cream consistency • Add the rest of the chickpeas, then whizz again for a few seconds but don’t break them down completely • Season with salt and a good squeeze of lemon juice • Mix together the harissa and tomato puree with the rest of the olive oil • Drizzle over the houmous to serve with pitta chips

Pitta chips

The ideal accompaniment to the houmous 4-6 wholemeal pitta breads 3-5 tablespoons olive oil Fennel seeds (optional) • Split each pitta horizontally into 2 halves • Brush the 2 halves with olive oil and sprinkle with fennel seeds and a sprinkling of salt • Cut each half into about 4 triangles • Place on the baking sheet and place in a 180c oven for about 8-10 mins, but keep checking they, you want them to be golden brown not burnt! • Cool slightly before serving • Them will keep in an airtight container for a few days but warm up before serving

Guys - make these simple, tasty recipes and they’re sure to put a smile on her face!

Sea bass with butter beans, chorizo & tomato This is a super- fast supper dish that is warming and satisfying.

2 large sea bass fillets (use sea bream fillets as a good alternative) 10cm of chorizo cut into thick rounds and then halved 8 ripe cherry tomatoes Pinch of dried oregano Olive oil 1 clove garlic ¼ red chilli finely chopped 1 x 400g tin butter beans, drained 2 large handfuls of baby spinach Squeeze of lemon juice If you’re hungry, you can always add rice or potatoes Method Warm two plates. Snip the edge of the fillets once on each side to prevent them curling when you fry them and slash the skin side in a couple of places. Season and put to one side. In a non- stick pan fry the chorizo with a little olive oil over a gentle heat until the oil starts to run and the chorizo starts to sizzle but not burn. Add the cherry tomatoes along with the oregano and cook for a few minutes until they just start to soften. Add the garlic with the chilli and cook over a medium heat for a couple of minutes without burning, then add the butter beans. Stir until hot and season well with black pepper. Add the spinach and cook until just beginning to wilt. Add a little olive oil if necessary. Squeeze over some lemon juice and then divide between the 2 warmed plates. Keep warm. Wipe the pan out with some kitchen towel and heat a little more olive oil. Can add dry sherry or white wine if you wish. Place the fish skin side down into the pan and fry for 2 (maybe maximum of 4) minutes or until the skin is brown and crispy. Turn the fillets over and cook for a further 2 (maybe maximum of 4) minutes or until the fish is just cooked through. This will depend on the thickness of the fillet. Arrange the fish on top, skin up, of the warm butter bean and tomatoes. Serve at once.

Strategies for Managing Stress:

savour every moment

Constant multitasking means our attention is divided, so we don’t notice when any one thing is giving us pleasure. We don’t take time to enjoy the delicious lunch we prepared because we’re so focused on our to-do lists, and as a result we feel unnecessary stress. Social researchers have recently found that a regular small pleasure, like eating socially, increases happiness, improving our wellbeing the same amount as doubling our disposable income. Savouring moments like listening to their child laugh at a joke or watching a beautiful sunset can boost happiness and in turn improves resilience - the ability to 'bounce back' from a stressful situation. This then leads to increased life satisfaction, which leads to more opportunities to savour small pleasures, which then leads to more happiness. It's a happiness cycle. But how do we start this cycle, and what does it mean to notice or savour small pleasures? Focus on one activity at a time Stop for a moment and do just one thing. Close the laptop and just focus on eating the sandwich. Engage fully in what you’re doing Notice the feel of the sandwich in your hand. Use as many senses as possible to really notice the activity as if you were doing it for the first time and are required to explain it to someone afterwards. Enjoy the activity as if it's the last time you’ll experience it Research has shown that thinking about an experience as temporary, or as something that will come to an end will increase the enjoyment of it. Look to the past You don’t just have to savour positives in the present. Psychological research shows that thinking about past positive events like the birth of a child, your first date or finishing a marathon will also increase happiness. Reminiscing like this with family or friends about past events, particularly where you shared laughter, also results in improved relationship satisfaction.

GET A DOG!!

Dogs really are our best friends, according to a Swedish study that says canine ownership could reduce heart disease. A study of 3.4 million people between the ages of 40 and 80 found that having a dog was associated with a 23% reduction in death from heart disease and a 20% lower risk of dying from any cause over the 12 years of the study. Previous studies have suggested dogs relieve social isolation and depression – both linked to an increased risk of heart disease and early death. The solution Dog owners show better responses to stress (their blood pressure and pulse rates don’t soar), have higher levels of physical activity and slightly lower cholesterol levels.

St Nicholas Church AGM Fabric & building report 2018 Having had a good report from the Ecclesiastical Insurance in late December 2017’s inspection , we were encouraged to apply and received a grant of £500 towards an upgrade to the Kitchen electrical circuits and emergency lighting ,with FOS contributing the same we were able to complete the work in September. VAT was applicable and some £175 returned to the PCC. Problems with the clock were resolved with help from Colin Justice, the PCC had a report on the condition from Smiths and has decided against the recommendations, we have as a result amended our maintenance procedures to those recommended in their manual, subsequent to their visit the bell cable has snapped and the bell is not working, we have some work in hand in the belfry and hope to have it repaired at the same time . Bell winding is still a problem. Quinquennial report. The quinquennial is due in 2019 and I recommend that Mr Alan Frost continues to take this for us, he has been a good friend to us on all our projects.

With the support from the FOS and don’t forget we have also raised £4500 as well over the period from grants. We have £1000 in reserve for future work to the painting, an added bonus is that we received all the vVAT back from theseprojects. We have done extremely well over the last five years, work in hand includes the bee infestation, work to the cable drums on the clock /bell and the tower, should be completed over the next couple of months Outstanding work which should be completed within the current quinquennial: Nave roof ; there is a little beetle infestation in the rafters. Re treatment and removal of frass is recommended. Would like to do stuff: To replace the two bits of wood that are the Church notice board on the outside wall with a smaller bespoke one. Tree pollarding project: Gina has been able to arrange a better deal for the pollarding and has the matter in hand. Regards Roy Shons

1.What did you want to be when you grew up? I had absolutely no idea. 2. What was your first job? Petrol pump attendant. I remember being taught by the garage owner, “if the customer wants three gallons, say to him, ‘shall I make it up to a £1 sir?’”. Petrol was six shillings and sixpence a gallon and wages were five shillings per hour. It was a great job; not too busy with very friendly, chatty customers. 3. Who (alive or dead) would you like to have dinner with and why? (You can have more than one!) I would go for a fun evening with David Mitchell, Lee Mack, Alan Davies and Julie Walters. Not very profound but should be a good laugh. 4. What historical era would you like to have lived in and why? Definitely now as I like the comforts of modern living. It’s so good to have a warm house, hot water and flushing toilets. It’s also really good to have an anaesthetic at the dentist! 5. Where would you want to live if not where you live now and why? Cublington on Sea with snowy mountains in the distance would be perfect. I could walk on the beach in the morning and ski in the afternoon. Bliss. 6. What is the temptation you wish you could resist? Dairylea cream cheese triangles. It’s a life long addiction. 7. What is your favourite book and why? Birdsong by Sebastian Faulks. An amazing and moving story about a soldier’s experience in WW1. It was a book where I marked pages to come back to because the writing was so powerful. 8. What is your favourite song and why? The Whole of the Moon, by the Waterboys. Lifts the spirits and makes you cry, both at the same time. Best played loud! (See what we mean! Ed) 9. What is the pet hate that makes your hackles rise? Oh dear – so many! Littering is a big one but also intolerance, aggressive driving, rudeness, inconsistency of duvet cover sizes, plastic, plastic and more plastic, snoring, sniffing, being bitten by insects, Wilf Self using big words to make himself look clever, Luton Airport (used to be so pleasant). I could go on and on. 10. What is the unlikely interest that engages your curiosity? Very modern art. 11. How long have you lived in Cublington. Fifteen years.

Answer somewhere in the Crier.

Recycle your old Christmas tree When the festive season is all over we can collect and dispose of your Christmas tree for £5. The shredded (not burnt) tree will be chipped and recycled. A contribution from proceeds will be made to Orchard Ground funds. Please contact Tim George on 07308 765218

From the Reverend Dear friends, One minute it’s one year and then, all of a sudden it’s another! If you’re anything like me you take about 3/4 weeks to get used to writing the new number and probably ruining several cheques, letters etc in the process. Of course new year is a time for thinking about hopes and aspirations for the future and possibly ‘putting some things to bed’ which might not have been so great after all. I’m not sure how many people still keep the old tradition of new year’s resolutions but it’s one of those old institutions which might bear a revival if it is stalling into disuse. Setting good goals and standards is always a good thing.

We could certainly do with some new resolve in public and international life(as well as personal?) because the world seems a little more uncertain and scary now than any time since I was a child in the 1950’s in the ‘shadow of the bomb’ as they used to put it. Let’s pray that the peace and joy we have hopefully experienced over the Christmas period continues. God Bless you all. Reverend Philip Derbyshire In the absence of any new copy received from the Reverend, we have re-run his piece from January 2018. It seems nothing much has changed!

NEW YEAR RESOLUTIONS! After the Christmas festivities we can all feel a little stressed – use the New Year to take stock of your health and make some positive changes for your mind and body. Stress can leave us feeling tense, causing tight muscles in our back and neck but by making some simple changes, we can improve our stress levels and general health. Here are a few tips to increase activity and reduce stress: •F eel calmer by relaxing your breathing - take a few deep breaths. • Go for a walk outside and get some fresh air. • I f you are working at a desk, take regular, short breaks and s-t-r-e-t-c-h. •T ake the stairs instead of the lift and park at the opposite end of the car park. • Don’t skip meals and do drink water regularly.

The most important factor to consider is to choose physical activity that you enjoy, exercise should not be seen as a chore but an uplifting experience. We are fortunate to live in an area full of exercise opportunities with local leisure centres, golf clubs and beautiful woodland such as Ashridge and Rushmere, to “forest bathe” (using all of your senses to soak up the atmosphere of the forest) or Nordic walk. Set yourself realistic exercise goals and keep track with the vast number of mobile apps available. Get some family members or friends together to turn it into a social experience or join a local club – there are many to choose from: walking groups, running, rugby, football and tennis clubs, to name a few. Have you considered Pilates? St Judes run local classes with day time and evening sessions. Each class has a maximum of 12 participants and are run by a Chartered Physiotherapist, who is also a fully certified Pilates instructor.

Cublington's 2nd ADVENT Trail Apologies that no posts of windows were visible from Thursday 6th till Monday 10th. Diane and Jane were both away. All posted on evening of 10th to make up for it. All looked brilliant. I hope everyone has enjoyed doing them as much as everyone enjoys seeing the new ‘live’ Window each evening. All culminated in an Advent Windows Walk on Christmas Eve, from the Unicorn round the village finishing with Carols by the Crib in the Church. What great fun.

What do you call your sister if she only has one leg? Eileen. I have an inferiority complex but it's not a very good one.

Christmas Craft Sale And Coffee Morning THANK YOU A big ‘Thank You’ to everyone who supported my charity coffee morning and craft sale at the beginning of December. Whether you were able to come on the day, bought items beforehand or made a donation, your generosity was humbling and I am truly grateful. We raised £790 on the day and with the money I received prior to the event I was able to pay £1000 via ‘The Big Give’ (which provides matched funding), The Unicorn Clubroom meaning Canine Partners actually received £2250.

Well-being is a skill to be learnt By Richard J Davidson March, 2016 Well being is fundamentally no different than learning to play the cello. If one practices the skills of well-being, one will get better at it. Well-being basically has four constituents and practicing these four skills can help to promote higher levels of well-being in our lives.

1. Resilience

The first key to paraphrase the bumper sticker, stuff happens. We cannot buffer ourselves from that stuff, but we can change the way we respond to it.

2. Outlook

The second key to well-being is in many ways the flip-side of the first one. The ability to see the positive in others, the ability to savor positive experiences, the ability to see another human being as a human being who has innate basic goodness.

3. Attention

The third building-block of well-being may surprise you. It’s attention. To paraphrase the title of a very important paper that was published by a group of social psychologists at Harvard, “A wandering mind is an unhappy mind.” • What are you doing right now? Where is your mind right now? Is it focused on what you’re doing, or is it focused elsewhere? • • How happy or unhappy are you right now? The impact on productivity, on showing up, on being present with another person and deeply listening is substantial.

4. Generosity

There are now a plethora of data showing that when individuals engage in generous and altruistic behaviour, they activate circuits in the brain that are key to fostering well-being. These circuits get activated in a way that is more enduring than the way we respond to other positive incentives, such as winning a game or earning a prize.

Always remember you're unique. Just like everyone else.

What Happened circa 2019 BC • The 2nd millennium BC spanned the years 2000 through 1001 BC. In the Ancient Near East, it marks the transition from the Middle to the Late Bronze Age. The first half of the millennium is dominated by the Middle Kingdom of Egypt and Babylonia. • The alphabet develops. • Brexit first mentioned. (Joke) • At the center of the millennium, a new order emerges with Minoan Greek dominance of the Aegean and the rise of the Hittite Empire. • The end of the millennium sees the Bronze Age collapse and the transition to the Iron Age. • Other regions of the world are still in the prehistoric period. • In Europe, the Beaker culture introduces the Bronze Age. • The Indo-Iranian expansion reaches the Iranian plateau and onto the Indian subcontinent (Vedic India), propagating the use of the chariot. • North America is in the late Archaic stage. • World population rises steadily, possibly surpassing the 100 million mark for the first time.[1] • c. 2000 BC – Glass appears. Glass was first made in the ancient world, but little is known about man’s first efforts to make glass. Amulets and solid beads were made in Mesopotamia as far back as 2500BC. Later, glass making was further developed in Egypt around 1500BC. • c. 2000 BC - The last woolly mammoth goes extinct on Wrangel island. • Arrival of the ancestors of the Latins in Italy. • Town of Mantua was said to be founded. Mantua was an island settlement which was first established about the year 2000 BC on the banks of River Mincio, which flows from Lake Garda to the Adriatic Sea. • Stonehenge is believed to have been completed. It is is perhaps the world’s most famous prehistoric monument. It was built in several stages: the first monument was an early henge monument, built about 5,000 years ago, and the unique stone circle was erected in the late Neolithic period about 2500 BC. In the early Bronze Age many burial mounds were built nearby. • Farmers and herders traveled south from Ethiopia and settled in Kenya. • Horses were tamed and used for transport. • Dawn of the Lal-lo and Gattaran Shell Middens pilings in the Philippines. These are one of the most significant archaeological gastronomic finds in Southeast Asia in the 20th century. The site is located along the banks of the Cagayan River in the province of Cagayan, Philippines. The site, as old as 2000 BC, is highly important due to its archaeological impact on the food resources and human activities of the ancient peoples of the Cagayan Valley. • 2000 BC: The first solar-lunar calendars were put into use in Egypt and Mesopotamia. Known as Solunar calendars, these calendars consist of 12 lunar months. The calendar is not linked to the seasons and drifts by 11 days every year, coming back to its original dates every 33 Islamic years. • Bronze Age began in north Ancient China. The long period of the Bronze Age in China, which began around 2000 B.C., saw the growth and maturity of a civilization that would be sustained in its essential aspects for another 2,000 years.

And finally... No Joke

It has been reported that a Comedian cancelled a uni gig after students handed him a ‘behavioural contract’ banning 12 different types of subjects from his act! The contract would have stopped him from telling jokes which were not “respectful and kind” and banned twelve forms of offence. The form declared: “By signing this contract, you are agreeing to our no-tolerance policy with regards to racism, sexism, classism, ageism, ableism, homophobia, biphobia, transphobia, xenophobia, Islamophobia or anti-religion or anti-atheism.” Student leaders argued that the contract was necessary to preserve the student union as a “safe space” and a place for “joy, love and acceptance”. Come on people get real! Comedy and the ability to laugh at situations and oneself is surely the best form of free speech which is why the Crier is full of them!

Orchard Ground

PRESS RELEASE 20TH NOVEMBER, 2018 Funding approved for the new kitchen at The Biggs Pavilion, Orchard Ground, Cublington

Thanks to the £28,000 grant from funding body WREN, Cublington is set to get some much needed improvements at Orchard Ground. The money, awarded by WREN’s FCC Community Action Fund, will be used to fully refurbish the existing kitchen in The Biggs Pavilion thus making a huge difference to this local amenity. Orchard Ground Committee members believe this will provide a real boost to the community, and are delighted that WREN has awarded us this money. Everyone is really looking forward to the new kitchen taking shape over the next few months. WREN is a not-for-profit business that awards grants for community, biodiversity and heritage projects from funds donated by FCC Environment through the Landfill Communities Fund. Penny Horne, WREN grant manager, says: “We’re delighted to be supporting the Cublington, Orchard Ground, Biggs Pavilion – kitchen renovation project and pleased our funding will make such a difference to so many groups of people in Cublington and the surrounding villages. WREN is always happy to consider grant applications for projects that benefit local communities and we’re looking forward to this one having a positive impact very soon.” The Orchard Ground Committee hopes the new kitchen will be ready to use by mid February, 2019.
