I am a self taught graphic design artist, I have loved to draw my whole life and I find myself creating everyday. I grew up in Buckinghamshire, and have loved living in the countryside which has inspired a great deal of my art. I love modern takes on traditional painting which I use for references in my work. Music has been a massive part of my life, influencing not just my art but my love for fashion, some of the artists that I listen to are David Bowie, Oasis, The Sex Pistols and Pulp. Harry Bystra

l a i r o t i d E The last time we wrote the Crier Editorial was in 2017. Funnily enough, that was for the February issue as well. On that occasion our son Patrick stepped up to the plate. He wrote a piece that explained the meaning of the word February and why the month is used for the one-day adjustment of a leap year. A lot has happened since that 2017 editorial. We invoked article 50 of the Treaty on European Union. Donald Trump was inaugurated as the 45th president of the United States, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry got married, Notre Dame Cathedral caught fire destroying the spire and the roof-supporting oak beams, The North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) celebrated its 70th anniversary and the word Covid entered our vocabulary. These events are part of event trails which change, evolve or for which solutions are found. Article 50 has turned into Brexit. Thankfully (some may say) the 45th US president is about to be replaced by the 46th President. Meghan and Harry have embarked on their North American commercial venture. President Emmanuel Macron has announced that Notre Dame will be restored by 2024. The end of the cold war has caused NATO to reimagine its place in global affairs, but it remains an important military alliance. So, what about Covid? Certain words and phrases have proven to be used less often because of its existence. “It’s my round”, “the performance starts at 8:00pm”, holiday and “why don’t you come to ours” have faded into distant memory. While “where is my mask?”, “you’re on mute!”, social distancing and the R rate are omnipresent. These of course are very superficial observations of a terrible disease. Its effect on every sphere of our lives has been beyond dramatic. We need to be rid of it as soon as possible. Of course, we have had the fantastic news of the University of Oxford, AstraZeneca vaccine. Could it be we are about to turn a corner? We mentioned at the beginning that Patrick wrote a piece for the Crier that explained the meaning of the word February. He found that the month is named after the Latin word februum, which is a reference to a means of purification. Could it be that this month, February, is the month we inch toward some form of purification, some form of normality. Let’s hope so! Mike, Sue & Paddy Bush

COMMENT

Oh dear... we very quickly went from Tier 2 to Tier 4 to a full National Lockdown. Christmas was ruined for many, households being unable to mix and the new highly infectious variant has meant the village has unfortunately seen several cases of the virus. Our best wishes to those that are or have been unfortunate enough to experience it. We wish you all a very speedy recovery. The NHS desperately need our help by following the rules and by staying at home and not socialising. Be careful and stay safe, it is a vicious disease! My sister-in-law has long Covid and is still struggling some 10 months after contracting it. Better news in that the majority of the octogenarians in the village have now been vaccinated, even those vunerable people (who got the dreaded letter) have started to get the jab. Let’s hope this is the beginning of the end of a dreadful 11 months and counting. On an even more optimistic note, the buds are bursting, daffodils and snowdrops are showing their heads and soon the bluebells and Spring will be here along with the warmer, hopefully more settled weather.

Welcome to

David and Caroline, + family to Meadow Close. Welcome to the village, we’re sure you’ll love it here. Also to the newly appointed team vicar to the Cottesloe benefice, Andrew Krauss.

Received from a reader... Thank you so much for your excellent, interesting and informative journal, well done to all involved. Always nice to get compliments. Ed.

Hopefully the start of getting back to some normality towards Easter after a very strange and fractious 12 months. Letters & articles for the Crier most welcome: info@cublingtoncrier.co.uk

Au Revoir Cublington When we first came to Cublington to view 9 Bell Close, the outside walls were only waist high. Studying the artist’s impression of our potential home, Michele and I stood on the soon-to-be lawn and peered into the future - only to have our gaze broken by lambs finding their feet in Arthur’s field. With two young girls, we were only just finding our feet ourselves and the pastoral peace of Cublington seemed a sure-footed place to settle. Reflecting, some 32 years later, it proved the right decision. Capturing three decades of memories is a task beyond three hundred words. There has been the good: it was in Cublington our youngest daughter took her first steps and we’ve seen family married in Saint Nicholas — where too, we’ve seen the sad, saying final farewells to great friends made in the village — and then there is the ugly: for anyone who recalls our eldest’s 18th at the Orchard Ground, she wishes to reiterate her apologies. That birthday aside, I’m proud of our family’s participation in village life. It’s been a pleasure to be involved in everything from the panto to editing The Crier. We can fondly remember stringing up bunting with John Nichols along the High Street at 6am for VE Day (which year? 1995 was 50 Years) and I think I remember the late-night discussions during the ‘Save the Pub’ campaign. To The Unicorn, I still have the rosette from your sloe gin competition and a confession to make: I kept putting the same ‘vintage’ in for judging — for years. You will be missed. Perhaps not as much as the countless dinner parties we threw at Meadow Close — there’s nothing like a quiet night in. These evenings will live long in our memories and we hope it’s the same for those who joined us. At the heart of these celebrations — and at the heart of what made Cublington such a special place to live — is the people. Praise should be given to the community who work tirelessly behind the scenes to bring Cublington alive, be it the Christmas panto or summer fete, the parish council or pub staff, the church, the Orchard Ground committee, or The Crier: thank you. We are sure you will welcome the village’s latest residents, David, Caroline and their boys, with the same heart that you have shown our family, so that in 30 years’ time they can look back and say that moving to Cublington was the right decision too. For us, our future now lies in Kent, so we can be closer to our daughters and our grandchildren. We still have family locally so I’m sure you will see us in The Unicorn from time to time. For now, au revoir. Jerry, Michele, Hollie and Charlotte The Keohane’s

The Vales on farming in the Vale #4 Dec/Jan Back in the October edition I mentioned the crops we plant from late September through to November and mentioned that we were growing Winter Beans for the first time in many years. As all the avid gardeners and allotment holders reading this can tell you, a crop rotation is one of the easiest and most important things you can do to help grow healthy plants that yield. Crop rotation helps reduce crop specific pest and disease problems for example Takeall (Takeall is a soilbourne fungus that will, like the name suggests, prevent the ear from producing grain) and Wheat bulb fly in Wheat or club root in Oilseed Rape. It is also a very useful tool in controlling weeds especially those that are resistant to chemicals. It also helps with balancing the nutrient uptake from the soils by scheduling crops with different nitrogen demands. We are proponents of Integrated Pest management, crop rotation plays a major part of this in preventing pests. What Integrated Pest Management means simplified is categorizing the management of pests into 3 categories. 1 Prevent – Means by which occurrence of pests can be eliminated or reduced. 2 Observation - Monitoring of pest levels before intervention. 3 Intervention – act of using a control method. These can be: Cultural control- non chemical management e.g. using manual or mechanical means to change the soil and crop environment to discourage pest establishment, Biological control – encouraging or releasing predatory or parasitic insects and mites. Chemical control -use of pesticides with an emphasis on using a pesticide that only works on the target pest not on other beneficials. Crop rotations are influenced by many factors and evolve to represent the different challenges faced on the farm at the current time. The two biggest drivers of change to our rotation in recent years has been the chemical resistance to black grass and the Cabbage Stem Flea Beetle in Oilseed Rape. Blackgrass is an annual grass that will out compete the planted crop for nutrients and is also susceptible to ergot that will contaminate wheat. In order to help reduce the blackgrass plant population we have reintroduced spring cropping to the rotation, mainly by reducing our Winter sown Oat area (the hardest winter sown crop we grow to control blackgrass in.) and replacing it with Spring Sown Oats. Blackgrass is believed to be 80% autumn germinating hence being a lot easier to control in the spring. Cabbage Stem Flea Beetle (CSFB) numbers have risen steadily over the last decade or so. Since the withdrawal of neonicotinoids seed dressings in 2013, control of CSFB has been very difficult. The adult CSFB attack the young oilseed rape plants as soon as they emerge and can remove all leaf matter killing the plant. Plants that survive this or are well established before the CFSB attack will have eggs laid on them. The eggs hatch in the spring and the larvae eat out the stems then drop to the ground and pupate. The CSFB damage we had last year was so devastating and demoralizing we nearly dropped it from our rotation in its entirety but this autumn we had perfect planting conditions so we did end up planting some. Utilising IPM (Integrated pest management) we have experimented with several cultural methods to try to reduce CFSB levels without success. CSFB have shown resistance to insecticides so we do not use chemicals to try to control them. We are intending to replace some of the Oilseed rape area with the Winter Beans. So this last month has seen us doing more drainage and we have also been getting ready for February. The Winter Oilseed Rape we harvest is delivered to an offsite store at Oakley near Thame as we do not have any shed space where we can keep it separate from our other crops. Growing Winter Beans means we need somewhere to store them. There are no local stores we can deliver them to, like we do with the Oilseed Rape so we have taken the decision to invest in an extension to one of our sheds to give us somewhere to store them. We hope to pour the concrete bases on Friday (22nd Jan) and the plan is the extension will be erected at the beginning of February. Stay safe George

Orchard Ground & North Field Latest grant & other news

•B rilliant News received from Martyn Waters - our grants magician. There have been further monies made available by central government for this and the previous lock downs in December 2020, again these are available via Buckinghamshire Council. Liz Smith has confirmed receipt of the following payments today from Buckinghamshire Council into the OG bank account: £858.00 for the tier 4 lockdown period from 19/12/2020 to 5/01/2021; £2001.00 for the tier 5 lockdown from 6/01/2021 to 16/02/2021; a one off lock down payment of £4,000; and a discretionary ‘top up’ grant from Buckinghamshire Council of £810.00. Total £7,669.00. This news however must be tempered with the thought that the lockdown is going to last longer than we perhaps thought and this money will help compensate for a potential total lack of revenue in 2021. The application for this round of covid restrictions support money was confusing as it was unclear about amounts that could be claimed, and only one application was required. But these amounts are listed elsewhere on the Buckinghamshire Council website against the rateable value for business properties between £0 and £15,000. The rateable value for The Biggs Pavilion for 2020/2021 was remitted to zero by AVDC. The OG Committee reaffirmed it’s commitment to become a Charitable Trust at the recent meeting held in January. The Parish Council is drawing up the legal transfer of the 99 year lease. They will retain the freehold. •T he planning application for North Field is taking far longer than we envisaged under the new local government structures in Buckinghamshire and possibly Covid-19 measures. Now it appears that a new Planning Officer is in place and catching up on existing applications. Once the planning consent has been received we can make a start with planting the community orchard. •1 00 Club 2021/22: with the current round of draws coming to an end, the next rounds start in May. OG sellers will again be asking you to support the village amenity that is Orchard Ground. Please buy a ticket(s) at juts £12 for 10 draws. If you would prefer to buy a ticket virtually, please contact Bob via email. bobpaine2002@hotmail.com or call on 01296 680483. Last year over £1400 was distributed in prize money. Remember a thriving local amenity such as this helps keep your house price up! •Y our OG Committee currently is: Colin Antosiewicz, Chairman; Liz Smith, Treasurer; Vanessa Verity, Secretary; Jason Taylor, Maintenance; Bob Paine, Bookings & Allotments; Michael Reilly, Cricket & Parish Council; Gary Brazier, Tennis & General; Martyn Waters, North Field; Miranda Gregory, Events; Lucy Peck, General. All are volunteers.

New committee members always wanted. Please volunteer to help on this committee if you can spare the odd hour or two every month. Minutes of AGM available on Cublington.com • The next committee meeting is Tuesday March 2nd @8pm via Zoom

The masks which are all three layer, reversible and washable are available in 3 sizes including a new ‘ Back to School’ range for teenagers. Details of the current colours and patterns can be found at www.Etsy.com/uk/shop/HandmadeByWonkyDog or by getting in touch with me directly at wonky.dog@icloud.com or on 07515 398111.

Planning Notice - Urgent action required - Still time to object Lockharts Farm Waste Recycling Facility, Cublington Road, Wing, Leighton Buzzard, Buckinghamshire, LU7 0LB – Bulk Transfer Limited. There has been a planning application made concerning the above site. The reference isCM/0066/20 and you can review the documents on the Bucks Council website - Minerals and waste planning portal : https://publicaccess.buckscc.gov.uk/online-applications/simpleSearchResults.do?action=firstPage The Planning Application is made under Section 73 of the Town and Country Planning Act 1990 to vary Condition 1 (Plans), Condition 2 (Operating Hours) and Condition 3 (Lorry Movements) of planning permission 08/20007/AWD . The first condition is a change in the layout of the site. The second condition is to amend the operating hours from 8.00 am - 5.00pm Mondays to Fridays and 8.00am - 1.00pm Saturdays, to 7.00am - 5.00pm for Mondays to Fridays and 8.00am - 1.00pm Saturdays. The third condition is to change the number of daily lorry movements from 12 in and 12 out per day to 30 in and out per day. The operator has stated it has implemented a routeing system which requires vehicle drivers to turn left out and right in at the junction of the internal private access road to their site with the public highway (Wing Road). A sign has been erected to remind drivers of this requirement just before entering the public highway. The Parish Council is objecting to this application on the grounds of volume of movements would be detrimental to the local community and the original conditions of planning permission 08/20007/AWD should be complied with. If you have any queries or need assistance in lodging your comments with Bucks Council please contact the parish clerk, Mike Joy, email cublingtonpc.clerk@gmail.com or phone him on 01296 682446.

Church Services February When in church, please hand sanitize when coming in, and sign the attendance book (just in case!) The pews with kneelers on the seats should NOT be used (for social distancing) Please wear a face covering. Outside church, a chance to chat and take the masks off ! (as long as no mingling and groups under six- Ed)

ALL ‘in-church’ Church services are currently suspended - although ‘allowed’, Oxford have advised that we should be closed. The church IS available for private prayer, please contact Evelyn to arrange (as the church has to be cleaned afterwards) However (hurrah)... There are Online Zoom services for our local churches each Sunday at 9.30am. There is also a Compline service at 9pm on Wednesdays, a lovely quiet service to end the day, also on Zoom, led by Rev Andrew. For any children, an online MESSY CHURCH is being started. The link is circulated, let Ev or Jane (on Janea2000@aol.com) know, if you want to be added to the email list. Going forward, we do not know how things are going to change in the next few months. It may be that Easter services will be restricted, and we may be outside again. There WILL be a Sunrise Service on Easter Day and we will share details next month!

From the Reverend

February is upon us, the month of Valentines! All those greetings cards with hearts and cuddly animals sat in champagne glasses… Now, I am not going to rubbish all that, of course I’m not. But I wonder if we can use it to say something about the love of God in Christ for us? - I hope we can. The two animals often look the same; the Gospel tells us that Jesus embodied our humanity with divinity. Summarised best by the opening verses of John’s Gospel (the Word became flesh) I think we have lost a sense of just how radical that was to those who first heard it. Often the two cuddlies are looking at each other so trustingly; at a wedding I always make the point that love means we trust one another to be honest about how we feel – especially when we disagree. And we speak of wearing our loved one’s name on our heart, the seat of our emotions. The Christian Gospel is quite clear that God’s love for us in unequivocal, whether we are “in a relationship” or not. And, that Christ came to make it visible; his sharing our life is the ultimate affirmation we long for. Our relationship with Christ is a covenant relationship meaning we can trust Him always, even when we mess up. And in the earliest pages of the Old Testament, we’re told that God’s name is written on our hearts. We experience love, but we also know in our heart that love is powerful and much bigger than us; that points us to the divine and the Church’s claim that God is love. God loves the world (us) so much, he sent Jesus to tell us and to show us. So, when we love we are part of God’s great love for the world and Jesus said that everyone would see that love and know that you are my disciples. Happy Valentine’s Day and beyond! With every blessing, Rev’d Howard Robson 01296 688593.

A Christmas Move Dear all

Just a quick note to say hello as the recently appointed Team Vicar in the Cottesloe Benefice. As many of you will already know Anna and I have been in the area for just over a year now since I started in Cheddington as an interim minister in December 2019. We moved from Cheddington to Stewkley literally just before Christmas, which was an interesting experience but we managed it. In a sense it has felt like saying goodbye and immediately saying hello again, but overall of course not a lot has changed. Although the early stages of this year will be heavily restricted, we wish you all the very best for 2021 and hope that we can all pull through the first part of this year together like we did in the first lockdown. Let us pray that the right spirit may remain and that we can look beyond Easter with a renewed sense of hope. Our thoughts remain with all who have had to stop work or who have lost loved ones, especially over a most unusual Christmas and New Year experience. With prayers and best wishes Andrew Krauss

Dearest Cublington, Lee and I wanted to take this opportunity to say a fond farewell to all our friends and neighbours as we embark upon a new adventure in Devon with our three young children. It has been a testing year for us all, and as I have been shielding from Coronavirus for much of that time, we feel sad that we’ve been unable to spend any quality time or say a proper goodbye to our village friends. After growing up in Whitchurch, my relationship with the village began in the late 1990s when my parents Dr Alan (Big Al) and Mrs Jacqui Yates purchased and ran The Unicorn pub for some time with my brother Will, before it was rented and then subsequently sold. I have some great memories of that time, especially as my late mother Jacqui was so happy socialising in the pub and organising food etc. Mum and Dad then decided to move to the village and bought their house in Ridings Way. After several stints living at my parents’ home (in between universities and boyfriends), Lee and I were married and bought a house in the village. We lived in Bell Close for 13 years and had our two sons Henry and Arthur there. We have spent our lockdown year living with my father Alan in Ridings Way whilst we looked for a house in the South West and our daughter Orla was born to us in September. Shortly after we found our dream home in rural Devon. Before having children we were very involved in the village, having an allotment for several years, talking part in variety performances, the Orchard Ground committee and of course the Panto. We leave behind friends, family and compadres in the village- I will miss a quick walk to the postbox turning into a two-hour conversation with everyone we’ve bumped into. I also want to personally thank everyone that offered and gave help to us during lockdown - a special thank you to Jason and Sarah’s girls’ and their lovely and unexpected gift of homemade biscuits (and bags) one summer evening. I’m sorry I haven’t been able to thank you all personally. But the biggest thank you of all must go to my Dad Alan for putting up with Lee, a pregnant me, three noisy children and a mountain of belongings in his home. Thanks Dad we are going to miss you. Hoping for a brighter future, I’m sure we will see you all again on our visits back to the village. Carrie, Lee, Henry, Artie and Orla Martindale

POLITE NOTICE - YET AGAIN!!! Please can dog owners clear up their dog’s mess around the village! It seems over the last few months there is more and more, particularly in Northfield and the footpath across the Read's field that goes from Aston Abbot's Road and along the backs of houses. As more people are out exercising during Lockdown3, which for most tends to be walking, it is horrible to come back with more than mud on your boots. Much appreciated.

BE AWARE!! CATALYTIC CONVERTER THIEVES ABOUT One of the consequences of the pandemic has been an increase in the value of precious metals. This, in turn, has led to an increase in thefts of catalytic converters - which contain a quantity of precious metals. One was taken from a car parked in Ridings Way during January. The perpetrators are able to remove this part in a matter of moments.

Stay safe!

Answer:

Colin Antosiewicz

While some makes and models are more likely targets than others, this would be a very good time, if you are able, to park your car somewhere inaccessible, or out of ready sight.

HOW TO SURVIVE LOCKDOWN3:

10 FUN WAYS TO KILL AN HOUR

If there’s one thing we learnt from the first lockdown, it’s that we will never learn Mandarin or write our King Lear. For most of us, it was simply a matter of getting to six (OK, five) o’clock before pouring ourselves a stiff G&T. But the third lockdown will be different. For starters, we’re seasoned pros at this. And, fingers crossed, there is light at the end of the tunnel, thanks to the vaccine programme. That glimmer of hope is enough to ensure even the most battle-weary of us might be able to accomplish something, however modest. Even if you manage to carve out only an hour away from doom-scrolling, here are 10 suggestions as to what you can do with those 60 minutes.

1. Invest seed capital on your sill

You don’t need a garden or patio — just a window sill. “January is not too early, even for tomatoes,” says Carol Klein, of BBC’s Gardeners’ World. “Use any old thing, seed trays or yoghurt pots. But don’t use soil — use compost. I love sowing dill at this time — it’s so easy to grow inside. Salads are really good; rocket will germinate in days.” Garden centres are open, selling seed packets, or you can go online to specialists such as Suttons.

2 Begin a new chapter

Did you enjoy the BBC’s A Very English Scandal in 2018, with Hugh Grant playing the Liberal politician Jeremy Thorpe? John Preston, who wrote the book it was based on, has turned his hand to Robert Maxwell, press baron, crook and father to Ghislaine. Fall comes out on February 4 and will make the month fly by. The Appeal by Janice Hallett (see Culture today for a review) is a cosy crime novel that critics are already suggesting gives Richard Osman’s hugely successful debut, The Thursday Murder Club, a run for its money; and for thriller fans, Slough House by Mick Herron.

3. Get an author to read to your child

A number of children’s authors have started reading their books, live, on the internet. At 2.30pm every weekday, Piers Torday is reading a chapter from his The Dark Wild on Instagram. Emma Carroll, who writes brilliant children’s historical fiction, is running workshops online every Tuesday and Thursday morning, so children can get tips about how she gets words onto paper. The BookTrust has lots of other authors and illustrators doing similar things on the HomeTime section of its website.

4. Join a royal book club

Still unsure what to read? Let the Duchess of Cornwall guide you. On January 15, she launched an online book club. The first book is The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse by Charlie Mackesy.

5. Count the stars

The Campaign to Protect Rural England is running a Star Count from February 6 to 14. You have to find as many stars as you can with the naked eye inside the constellation of Orion and post it online.

6. Take up twitching

February may seem a dull month for birds. Not so. Listen out for the song thrush and mistle thrush, with its rich, almost mournful, minor-key chirrups — interspersed with its football-rattle call. They start this month.

7. Stretch to exercising at home

It’s cold outside. However many people rave about “couch to 5K” or cold-water swimming, you’d prefer to be able to stay toasty-warm indoors. Yoga with Adriene is the answer. She is based in Texas and her online lessons — all on YouTube — are perfect for complete novices who want to feel less sluggish. There’s even six-minute “yoga at your desk” lessons. You don’t have to leave your chair.

VACANT VACANT

Could you please help this year? Call Roy to book your slot! 8. Get the declutter bug

“Life in lockdown is all about making a house — where maybe nobody is going out to work or school — easier to live in,” Kirstie Allsopp tells us. She suggests three simple tasks. Your mug cupboard. “Reduce to three mugs per member of the household.” Your bras. “Chuck out any item of underwear you have not worn in the past 18 months. Remember, there are charities that recycle bras.” Against Breast Cancer is one. Your hall. “Purge unworn or too small coats, boots, slippers and shoes. Just because you’re not coming in and out as much doesn’t mean this vital artery should be clogged up.”

9. Brighten up your garden

For instant gratification, plant cyclamen. “The hardy varieties, such as Cyclamen coum, are easily available at the moment and they are beautiful with their orbicular leaves,” says Klein.

10. Make marmalade

Even after Brexit, Seville oranges have started to arrive in the UK, which means only one thing — it’s marmalade season. The actual slicing, squeezing and boiling takes less than an hour, though the sticky stuff can take longer to set. You can even enter the Marmalade Awards, based in Cumbria but now taking entries by post. The deadline is February 10 — they will accept jars sent from anywhere in the world.

Supporting Local Bookshops! As local restrictions once more mean that bookshops must close their doors to the public, I wanted to flag up Bookshop (www.uk.bookshop.org) for anyone who may not have heard about it. Bookshop is an easy way to buy books online, while supporting independent bookshops with every purchase you make. You can choose a local shop to support (the closest to Cublington, I think, is Our Bookshop in Tring) and the profit from your order will be sent entirely to them. Otherwise, the profit goes into a pool to be evenly distributed between independent bookshops.

Exciting New Books! How to Change the World by Rashmi Sirdeshpande (5+ years Non-Fiction) This book will inspire kids with fifteen true stories of groups of amazing humans who've changed the world. Discover the astonishing things humans can achieve: from the campaign for women's votes, to the efforts to heal the ozone layer. Or travel back to the start of democracy in Ancient Greece, and into space to see the incredible teamwork on the international space station.

Amari and the Night Brothers by BB Alston (8+ Fiction) Amari knows three things. Her big brother has gone missing. No one will talk about it. His mysterious job holds the secret. So when Amari gets an invitation to the Bureau of Supernatural Affairs, she's certain this is her chance to find him. But first she has to get used to the new world of the Bureau, where mermaids, aliens and magicians are real, and her roommate is a weredragon.

All the Young Men by Ruth Coker Burks (Adult Non-Fiction) I heard about Ruth Coker Burks’s story years ago in a newspaper article, so I’m looking forward to reading it in her own words. Ruth volunteered for years as a caregiver and friend to AIDS victims at the height of the crisis, when families would often let the victims die alone. She supported countless young men, and buried the ashes of more than forty in her family cemetery. For her kindness, though, she was made an outcast in her community.

Dear Resident The COVID-19 vaccine programme has gathered pace since I last wrote and I wanted to update you on the latest news: Nearly 20,000* Bucks residents have now received their COVID-19 vaccine All Buckinghamshire residents aged 80 and above will be offered a vaccine appointment through their GP in the next fortnight All Buckinghamshire residents aged 70 and above will be offered a vaccine appointment through their GP in the next four weeks I know many of you have been anxious hearing about people elsewhere who’ve already been vaccinated so I want to reassure you that there is now capacity to deliver the vaccine across the whole county. In the south we have a new GP led site opening in Burnham next week and in the north GPs have opened their vaccine hub in Buckingham today (Tuesday). There is also now a new mass vaccination site close by, in Slough. All of this means far more Buckinghamshire residents will now be offered vaccine appointments. Please remember that this programme is being delivered by the NHS and not the Council. We have been playing catch up with our neighbours to some extent but you will now see real pace in terms of the numbers being vaccinated here so please don’t worry - if you are expecting a vaccine and haven’t already heard anything yet, you will do very soon. How will I get my vaccine? Buckinghamshire residents are being invited for their vaccines in several ways: via their GP, and/or via a letter from the NHS nationally, inviting them to book an appointment via the national booking system at either at a mass vaccination site, such as Slough, if they live within 45 minutes, or a local pharmacy led site If you work in the health or care sectors you will be offered a vaccine through a hospital site. Residents who live in care homes or who are housebound will be offered a vaccine through their GP. Residents can choose whether they want to book via the national system if they get an NHS letter, or wait to get their GP appointment. If you decline a national appointment you’ll still be offered one from your own GP practice. GP vaccine appointments Your GP will contact you directly when it’s your turn for the vaccine. You won’t go to your own surgery to get your jab; instead GPs have formed 9 local ‘hubs’ where they’re giving the vaccines. Eight of these are already open and are vaccinating patients, working through the priority list. You can find out which hub your surgery is linked to here on our website. Where to get more information about the COVID-19 vaccine The COVID-19 vaccine is safe and effective and it is the very best way to protect you from getting sick from COVID-19. Some scare stories and myths are circulating about the vaccine. It’s crucial that if you do want to know more about the COVID-19 vaccine that you get your information from a reliable source such as the NHS website. I do want to make some really important points: The COVID-19 vaccine, like all vaccines in the UK, has been approved for use after meeting the strict standards of safety, quality and effectiveness set out by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) More than 4 million people have been vaccinated in the UK so far and reports of any serious side effects such as allergic reactions have been very rare The COVID- 19 vaccine does not contain any egg or any animal products

Above data correct as at 25/1/21

You can read more about the COVID-19 vaccine and the roll out on the Buckinghamshire Council website too, including the answers to many of the frequently asked questions. Please be aware too that no vaccine is being wasted or discarded in Buckinghamshire at the end of each day. Standby lists of vulnerable patients are in use to make sure any vaccines left over from missed appointments do not go to waste. Please be alert to scammers too; sadly there are some people trying to take advantage of this situation. The NHS will: NEVER ask for payment – the vaccine is free NEVER ask for bank details NEVER arrive at your home unannounced to give you a vaccine NEVER ask you to prove your identity by asking you to send documents like your passportpecially with so many of us now having to change plans for Christmas at the last minute. It is undoubtedly a testing time and if you’re struggling, please reach out as our local support services are ready to help. You can find out more via the ‘Health and Wellbeing Bucks’ website which has details of all the organisations that can help you if you need. This makes us all feel more vulnerable and comes at a difficult time of year for many so let’s check in on each other in a safe way, maybe just by picking up the phone or dropping our friends and neighbours a text message to see if they’re ok and whether they need anything. I am so proud of our strong communities here in Buckinghamshire and my main message today is to remember those strengths, and how much stronger we are together. If we all take collective responsibility, following the rules as individuals, we can turn this situation around together. I know it’s hard, but this year is nearly behind us and while we face a very serious immediate challenge in the present, the future will be better and we will get through this. Stay at home, stay safe, and protect Bucks and each other, Martin Tett, Leader, Buckinghamshire Council * as at 19th January 2021

Also...Just 12 Cublington pictorial history books remaining! HOME FOOT HEALTHCARE TIPS Winter is on the way and with the cold weather it is important to ensure that your feet stay warm and dry. This is particularly important to those people in higher risk groups, such as diabetics, those with poor circulation, have medical conditions such as Raynaud’s disease, or whom may be more susceptible to damage from falls. Here are some tips that will keep your feet looking and feeling healthy this winter.

Hard skin can build up at any time of the year on your feet mainly due to: • Excessive loading on certain parts of the sole of the feet. • Prominent bones. • Rubbing from footwear. There are many gadgets on the market for this task but I would give a word of caution with the big cheese grater types of hard skin removers. If you have one please use it carefully as it is very easy to get carried away and end up with sore tender feet as a result, and leaving an uneven finish affecting new skin. A better approach I would recommend is regularly filing with a foot file. Frequency is key, file first then use a foot cream developed especially for the feet rather than a cream moisturiser. Apply socks afterwards to increase the creams’ effectiveness. • Do not use talcum powder or moisturiser between your toes. • If your toes are tight together you may get an increase in moisture and debris. • For best results only use surgical spirit to clean between your toes. Toenail tips: always cut straight but you can follow the shape of the nail to prevent sharp edges. I would recommend that you also see a Podiatrist for maintenance of your feet. When they maybe treating corns and callouses, they can also check your feet for verrucae and fungal infections and advise you on appropriate action. Did you know that repetitive hard skin build-up can also indicate that you could be overloading one part of your foot? This can help provoke malalignments and injuries above your feet i.e., hips, knees and backs. So, if you think this might be you and your feet aren’t providing that stable platform that we need to walk efficiently, then gait analysis is recommended and advice on whether you need simple insoles, orthotics/exercises can be given to address this. At St Judes we have a team of four HCPC registered Podiatrists who can offer friendly expert treatment and advice – we’re open Monday to Saturdays. So why not give us a call? Three siblings are encouraging Buckinghamshire residents to join them in an 80-mile hike across the Chilterns to remember loved ones and raise much needed funds for Florence Nightingale Hospice Charity. By walking from Swindon to Aylesbury, Adam Dalwood and his family will be taking literally thousands of steps to remember their father who died at Florence Nightingale Hospice in 2018. Adam, sisters Kelly and Hannah, and one of their partners David, will be undertaking the four-day guided hike along The Ridgeway, Britain’s oldest road, on behalf of the Hospice, where their father Robin was cared for before he passed away. Such was the compassion and care of hospice staff that the family are calling on fellow residents of the county to take part, whether that is to remember a loved one, raise much needed funds for a great cause, or just as a way to overcome the lockdown blues. Robin spent his last two weeks at the Hospice and, thanks to the staff, he received an incredible level of care and compassion, even managing to marry his long-term partner. Robin and Kim Dalwood had been together for over 25 years but had just never gotten around to tying the knot. Adam said: “I think they just forgot to do so.” But after losing a battle against pancreatic cancer, nurses and staff at the Hospice helped organise the most important item on their bucket list. In a room bedecked with fairy lights and ornaments brought in from home by staff, Robin reaffirmed the love he had shared with his beloved Kim. “When my father was admitted to the Hospice, it was a shock and, at the time I was just so angry, as that was when we understood he was close to the end of his battle,” Adam explained. “However, I couldn’t be angry with the nurses, I will never forget what they did for my father. For the two weeks he was at the Hospice, they went beyond out of their way. “We will be eternally grateful and taking part in the Ridgeway Hike is something positive to do to remember our dad and a small way to support the Hospice to provide such an amazing service to anyone who needs it.” Adam and his family are encouraging others to join the Florence Nightingale Hospice Ridgeway Hike on 3rd – 6th June 2021. Florence Nightingale Hospice Charity has been badly affected by the pandemic and, with the announcement of further restrictions at the start of the year, has closed all its shops again and most fundraising activities have come to a halt. However, the Hospice is continuing to provide high quality end-of-life care and support to patients and their families, either in the In-Patient Unit or at home. For more information about the Hike visit fnhospice.org.uk/ridgewayhike or contact fundraising@fnhospice.org.uk with any questions.

It is the UK's largest annual tree celebration and trees are definitely high up on Buckinghamshire Council’s agenda. Trees feature in our planned work, both in respect of commitment to enhancing biodiversity and also using nature-based solutions to tackle climate change. Tree planting is a long-term undertaking that needs to be well planned and strategic and we are currently planning where this will take place on our landholdings to ensure that we plant the right trees in the right places. For more information about National Tree Week, visit: treecouncil.org.uk To find out more about the Chiltern Rangers, including how to get involved, visit: chilternrangers.co.uk Covid: There are mobile testing units in various locations throughout the county. Our walk through site at the Gateway

continues to operate for those with symptoms. Book the test at nhs.uk/coronavirus. These sites are open 7 days a week for use by anyone with coronavirus symptoms, and all tests must be booked first – they are not available on a ‘drop-in’ basis. Anyone with even mild symptoms is being encouraged to arrange a test to help stop the spread of the virus. Symptoms include a high temperature; a new, continuous cough; or a loss or change to sense of smell or taste. Anyone with one or more of these symptoms should book a test at nhs.uk coronavirus or by calling 119. It is also possible to order a home testing kit via the website. If the mobile testing sites are fully booked, you will be offered testing at the next closest location. Gareth Williams, Cabinet Member for Public Health and Community Engagement at Buckinghamshire Council, said: “The situation in Buckinghamshire is extremely serious at the moment and it is vital we all do our bit to stop the spread of the virus. A key way of doing this is by getting tested if you have any coronavirus symptoms – no matter how mild – and isolating unless you get a ‘negative’ result. Please also isolate if anyone in your household develops symptoms. For more information about walk-through testing sites, you can watch this video https://www.youtube. com/watch?v=DcR w92bO8xg&t=50s. You can read the full guidance for households with possible coronavirus (COVID-19) infection, and on the latest lockdown measures, on the government website - https://www.gov.uk/coronavirus. If you need extra support during the lockdown period, please keep checking www. buckinghamshire.gov.uk/coronavirus/ which will continue to be updated with information about the various ways you can get help. Prolific fly-tipper jailed after joint operation A prolific fly-tipper has been jailed for 21 months for dumping after a joint prosecution by Buckinghamshire Council and Slough Borough Council. Mohammed Afzal was also banned from driving in a bid to stop him offending and cluttering up streets and the countryside again when he is released from prison. Mr Afzal was sentenced at Reading Crown Court after he previously admitted nine counts of illegally dumping of waste behind homes, near footpaths

and beauty spots, and two further counts of waste licence infringements in both Slough and south Buckinghamshire. He was sentenced to a 21 month prison sentence, banned from driving for 28 months, and the four vehicles he used to commit the fly-tipping were surrendered to the councils for disposal. No costs order was made due to Mr Afzal’s limited income 5. SPOTTED!

PLEASE keep your eyes peeled ... If you spot anything, and we

really do mean anything of interest (silly or serious or even just slightly interesting) in the village - please let us know.

Spotted - Very sad and tattered Union Flag on the flagpole at Orchard Ground!

Spotted - Brilliant new Thank You NHS flag

on the flagpole at Orchard Ground! Thanks to Lucy Peck for instigating the change!

Spotted - New Dog Poo bin at the end of the

footpath alley by the Nob. See article elsewhere!!

Spotted - New gate in the fence, right by the new dog poo bin... not connected!

Spotted - Can you believe this???!±!! A used

colostemy bag in the hedgerows. Seriously???!!!*** Time for a Litterpick??!!! ... several of you have suggested one. See ad elsewhere for more details.

Spotted - The Village notice board looking very sad and broken. The repair is in hand I’m reliably told. Spotted - They’re at it again... the cake fairies -

a tray of cakes delighted walkers in the village, at the top of Chapel Alley. Thank you - a most welcome treat!

Spotted - This is brilliant... an example of home

schooling taken to great lengths (excuse the pun!) Chalked on the path outside Rose Cottage/Silver Street, were the measurements of all the whales. From the very smallest to a huge blue whale some 30metres up the road. Very educational - even to me at 63 years old!

Great - pictures sent to The Crier...

The dawn before the snow - and snowy churchyard.
