Editorial This short poem just about sums up how the years fly past….here we are again with Christmas fast approaching. (And an election!) The four stages of life:

Brock

Having spent some six weeks in intensive care at High Wycombe, my lovely brave little lady passed away. Myself and her loving family were with her, some consolation to us all. During her stay, her constant concern was for my welfare and it was a great comfort to her to know I was being looked after by friends in the village. She would, I know, have been pleasantly surprised by the lovely messages I have received. To quote just one.

1. You believe in Santa Clause. 2. You don’t believe in Santa Clause. 3. You are Santa Clause 4. You look like Santa Clause

“I feel the village has lost a dignified yet true lady as she was elegant and dignified, yet so approachale and kind”. Thank you all so very much for all your kindnes.

You could almost put Jeremy Corbyn in the same analogy! We are very lucky to live in such a wonderful village with a great community spirit. The desire to live in the countryside to enjoy everything it has to offer, particularly relative peace, security and joy of the landscape far outweighs any so called advantages of living in a town. We believe we have a duty to protect our village and maintain its unique environment. To this end please support our village fundraising efforts whenever you can! Wishing you all a very happy Christmas and New Year, Judy and Graham

God Bless. “Shons” The funeral will be held at 10am on Friday 6th December at St Nicholas Church.

Early deadline for January content!! Your January Crier has to go to print before the Christmas shutdown so please be aware. If you have anything for inclusion, make sure I have it by the 15th of December please. Many thanks Gary (Ed)

It has also come to our attention...

I’m dreaming of a white Christmas, Just like the ones I used to know, But if you should run out of the white, I will gladly drink the red, though!

Cublington Cabaret Night 2019 What a great night! With a full house, and lots of people dressed to the theme of ‘The swinging sixties’, a two course meal served by the ladies was enjoyed by all. Colin Justice was MC for the second time, keeping the audience amused as usual, and introducing some ten acts, which varied from some ‘different’ dancing, as well as sketches and singing from Wrong Direction and Girls Aloud. Ev was kept busy and did a great job on the keyboard as always, particularly with the finale sing-along. Thanks must go to all who supported us by attending, the ladies for the meals, the acts, the bar, and all who helped in any way. As a result, Orchard Ground and Friends of St. Nicholas each get £488. We are already looking forward to next year (November 7th) Chris Brandon

THANK YOU & WOW! BLINGTON

Thank you so much to all the Cabaret stars and particularly to the fantastic organisers for their incredibly generous donation to Friends of St Nicholas. Almost £1000 was raised, split between F.O.S.N. and Orchard Ground. Thousands of pounds has been raised over the years from the Cabaret evening which is such a fun event but all takes a lot of organising and we are very grateful for their support. November 7th 2020 is the next one so put it in your diary. Well done and thank you to all participants.

A TIME TO REMEMBER AND REFLECT AT THE 2019 TREE OF LIGHT EVENTS

Florence Nightingale Hospice Charity has announced details of their 2019 Tree of Light commemoration events. The Charity recognises Christmas can be a very emotional occasion and hosts two Tree of Light events which are open to all, regardless of religion or spirituality, and whether or not your loved one was cared for at the Hospice or elsewhere. “The Tree of Light events are designed to give people a space where a part of the season is set aside to remember and reflect on loved ones,” says Ann Kenny, the Bereavement Support Team Lead at the Hospice. “Christmas can often be a time of conflicting emotions, or it can be so busy that those who are grieving can’t find a time to process feelings of sadness which may come to the fore at this time of year.” This year’s Aylesbury Tree of Light event has moved indoors for 2019 and will take place at Aylesbury High School on Walton Road on Sunday 1 st December at 5pm. It will also have a change of format, with more secular readings and music, rather than carols and prayers. “We are aware that many of our families are not Christians and may prefer something less religious but still thoughtful and meditative,” says Vicky James, Events and Community Manager. “There are lots of other poems and readings which bring comfort, and beautiful music apart from carols, so we are trying something new to see what people think.” The Buckingham Tree of Light event will take place on Saturday 14 th December from 5pm at St Peter and St Paul’s Church, Castle Street and will retain its more traditional feel, with prayers, readings and carols, so the Charity hopes that there is something for everyone in the two events.

RECYCLE, REUSE, REGIFT & ECO REPLACE We are all aware of the dreadful state of our environment concerning plastics and carbon emissions. There are many articles in the media with horrifying statistics concerning the harm we are causing to our environment. One article recently concerned ‘ecobricking’ when all non-recyclable plastics are shredded and pushed into a large plastic bottle. Everything put into the bottle should be clean without organic material as this can cause methane to develop with potentially catastrophic consequences! This is apparently used in developing countries where building materials are scarce. Among the contents are crisp packets, fruit and vegetable wrappings, sweet wrappers straws and black plastic food trays. A Serbian maths professor has built a house from these! We can also look at renovating old furniture with paint to give a ‘trendy’ new lease of life rather than taking it to the tip, especially the pre-70’s furniture made of much better materials and construction. Charity shops are more than happy to collect useable furnishings providing they meet health and safety criteria. Don’t forget we all get something unsuitable for Christmas so re-gift or donate! Four years ago our old, aging oil fired boiler was replaced with an Air Source Heat Pump. Together with Solar PV panels and associated insulation upgrades, our house is now classed as grade ‘B’ EPC rating, (no underfloor insulation, otherwise it would have been ‘A’ rated). Hence our house is now carbon neutral and year round temperature stability of between 16 and 21 degrees centigrade, controlled automatically….you don’t have to touch it all year round! Our electricity consumption averages 8,500kWh per year (that’s all in consumption), so a little time is required to research the best rates, but our net annual running costs currently are around £350, notwithstanding investment costs, of course! There is no smelly boiler in the house now, no bulky smelly oil tank in the garden, just a small heat pump taking up about 20% of the space and no need to worry about top-ups! So we are more than happy with our investment and associated reduction in our carbon footprint and costs. So if your boiler is due for renewal, please consider a heat pump. It is the future and indeed, my understanding is that by around 2025 all new build properties will have to have one fitted. Green Deals are still available.

Development

Extra volunteers will be needed for the North Field project works, once planning permission has been granted.

A charity is being set up to manage and develop the facilities at Orchard Ground, The Biggs Pavilion and North Field; also to begin the development of a community woodland on North Field. OG Association is still looking for further involvment from villagers to potentially become trustees. Between them, the trustee team will have a range of skills including, project management, a knowledge of charity management, grant funding, woodland and conservation; also an interest in the future development of the facilities of Orchard Ground for the benefit of the residents of Cublington. Are there any more villagers who would like to volunteer to act as a trustee? Several people have already offered their help for this exciting new venture in Cublington with skills around planning, woodland, charity management and grant funding. It’s shaping up to be a great team. Want to join in? You might just be the person we're looking for! For further details and a chat about what is required please contact Martyn Waters: Mobile 07973 754356 martyn.waters@icloud.com

Orchard Ground Latest news, highlights & general items of interest • A HUGE THANK YOU from Orchard Ground to the fabulous Cabaret crew for the amazing donation of £488 to future projects. A brilliant effort. Thank you. • Thank you also to Kevin Sawyer for checking and fixing the light in the changing room.

• It has been decided that for ease of maintenance the ballustrades around the pavilion will be removed. Quotes and grants are currently being sought to redecorate the entire pavilion.

• Orchard Ground and Charitable Trust status The North Field returned to the control of OG at the end of September. A gate will be installed for the benefit of dog walkers and villagers. An opening has been made for those who wish to explore. Four Trustees have volunteered to stand and the cost for setting up the charity and transferring the land is being shared by OG and the Parish Council. A 4 page pull out detailing some of the plans and challenges ahead is enclosed with this Crier. The OG Committee thanks the Crier for printing it in full colour. If you have any comments or queries, please let us know by the 15th of January 2020. • North Field New Project Planning Permission for change of use is progressing well. The landscaping survey has been completed and the architect has provided us with some sketches which appear in the flyer. • Bookings A wedding and the fete are both Saturday bookings clashing with cricket matches next summer. Cricket is trying to accomodate into future fixtures. Ongoing discussions with fete committee.

• Wireless broadband is being sourced for the Biggs Pavilion. It was felt this may enhance future booking potential. Costs for installing new telegraph poles to carry the cables is too high. Alternative solutions are still currently being sought including Satellite Broadband or trench and dig our own cables in! • Weedkilling of the carpark will commence once drier weather arrives.

• Groundforce Day will be Saturday 4th April led by the Cricket, Tennis and Allotment Clubs, everyone is welcome along to help weed, sand, clean and keep the recreation ground and environs neat and tidy!

• Events planned for 2020 A Family Quiz will be organised for January or February - date to be announced in next Crier. Also a Barn Dance is planned next summer to celebrate 30 years of Orchard Ground. Watch out for news. • Easyfundraising has so far raised over £573.04 for Orchard Ground - We now have 31 participants (only 7 more than a year ago!) - villagers who buy goods online could raise money for Orchard Ground for doing nothing other than a couple of clicks. We appeal to you to help us boost our numbers. See below or please speak to Bob Paine for more information on how to set it up - or see posters in the Biggs Pavilion.

• Your OG Committee currently is: Colin Antosiewicz, Chairman; Liz Smith, Treasurer; Vanessa Verity, Secretary; Jason Taylor, Maintenance; Bob Paine, Bookings & Allotments; Michael Reilly, Cricket & Parish Council; Gary Brazier, Tennis & General; Martyn Waters, North Field; Pippa Cheetham North Field; Miranda Gregory, Events; Lucy Peck, General

New committee members always wanted. Please volunteer to help on this committee if you can spare the odd hour or two every month. Minutes of AGM available on Cublington.com • D ate of next meeting: 19th January 2020 8pm The Unicorn

HEDGEHOGS Whilst out walking recently I noticed a small hoglet (that’s a baby hedgehog…I googled it!) lying in the long grass on the side of the lane. I knew something was amiss as they are not normally seen during the day and are also likely to be hibernating this time of year. I decided to leave the little chap alone (don’t interfere with nature!) but as he was still there next day we decided to take him to Tiggywinkles in Haddenham but unfortunately he didn’t survive. We have hedgehogs in our garden every year and was quite surprised when one of the receptionists said she hadn’t seen one for years. There is a website called hedgehogtrust.org which gives advice and information about these little creatures. Their main diet consists of slugs, beetles, caterpillars and worms. If these are in short supply they are happy to eat supplementary food such as meat based wet cat or dog food with a saucer of water but not milk as they are lactose intolerant. You may not see a hedgehog but they do leave signs of nocturnal visits as they roam over quite large distances using passageways between gardens. They generally hibernate between October/November until March/April but do move occasionally between nesting sites so you may have a visit. If you think one may visit your garden refer to the website above.

From the Reverend Dear friends, December is a wonderful month in the Christian calendar... the coming of Jesus, the Son of God, the Prince of Peace into our broken, fallen world at Christmas. With so many vicious conflicts, with Brexit, with a General Election we seem more torn than ever. Early 2020 I retire from full-time ministry. 38 years ago I was Ordained Priest after 7 years as a lay minister in Rochester Diocese. Over those years I have served in urban, suburban and rural Parishes in England and Zimbabwe and for 12 years I was a Prison Chaplain in Reading, Holloway and near Bicester,s pecializing in the religious rights of nonChristian prisoners. It has been a full and very interesting time with many happy and sad moments: Baptisms, Funerals and Weddings as well as all the usual Sunday services. I have always loved working with all the schools that I have had the pleasure to be connected with. The last 10 years have seen many changes and developments in Church life as well as in many other areas of life. I give thanks for special colleagues and parishioners and can only feel sadness over those unable to think outside the box.

We have a rich and varied diet of worship these days compared to half a century ago: Sunrise Service at Easter, Harvest in a barn, Messy church, Peoples Praise, Breakfast Service, Cafe Communion and still Parish Communion and Morning and Evening Prayer. I have particularly enjoyed innovating and the one person who must be mentioned is my long-suffering wife Joy who is a great inspirer and creative challenger and who has worked tirelessly over the years especially in the area of children’s and family work... and all for free! Our Bishop, Steven of Oxford, calls us to become a Christlike Church, being Contemplative, Courageous and Compassionate. This is the inspiration that Joy and I will take into my ‘retirement’ as we move to our new home in Milton Keynes, a city we have much admired and enjoyed for 20 years. I am going to continue with my Spiritual Direction work and pursue birdwatching and Icon writing, as well as going for great walks (every day!)... and resting for the rest of 2020. Finally have a lovely Christmas and hopefully a more positive new year. God Bless, Reverend Philip Derbyshire

The Aston Abbotts & Cublington Ladies Club

The club meets at the Village Hall in Aston Abbott’s on the third Thursday of every month at 2.30pm. We are a jolly group and enjoy talks on a variety of things interspersed with quizzes, bring and buys, garden parties, outings and more. Our afternoons end with tea and cakes and a raffle. Please come along and see if you like us. Our December meeting will actually be on the 12th December, the second Thursday of the month, so as not to clash with another event taking place on 19th December. This meeting takes the form of a short Carol Service followed by afternoon tea provided by the Ladies of the Club. If you are thinking of possibly joining the club you would be most welcome to join us but please let me know for catering purposes. ( My telephone number is 01296707833) I look forward to hearing from you.

Artists of

Cublington

I often hear talk of numerous artists and crafters in Cublington, and I wonder if we might all band together to display our work with a grand exhibition of Cublington talent sometime in the future? Perhaps even, during Bucks Art Week (unofficially of course). If anyone is interested please let me know and I’ll try and organise a get together...

The Cublington Wine Appreciation Society or The Cublington Winos!

Following on from another very successful and enjoyable Wine Tasting evening organised by Peter and Lucy Clunie in early October in the Biggs Pavilion, another evening is planned for Wednesday 4th December 2019 in the Biggs Pavilion. As the event date is nearing Christmas the theme will be a Sparkling Wine/Champagne tasting night. The joining fee is £5 per person and the cost for the wine tasting on this occasion will be £15 per head (normal sessions are £10 per head). The evening starts at 7:15 pm for a prompt 7:30 pm start and the session lasts around 2 hours or so. You don’t need to be a wine buff to join us but just enjoy a good time and a chance to try some wines that you would not normally buy or taste. If you are interested in joining the “Cublington Winos” group, either send an email to cublingtonwinos@gmail.com or give Kevin or Chris Shults a call on 01296-680417 and we will explain more about the evening. Cheers

CUBLINGTON PANTO your panto needs STILL NEEDS you! OH YES THEY DO!

New faces are still more than welcome to the great tradition that is the Panto in Cublington! All are welcome. It’s fun and lifts the spirit to do something outside your comfort zone. We would love new members in all areas. Handy men, women, painters, make-up, dress makers. MOST of all - ever fancied doing a turn on the stage?! Do please contact Gerry Griffiths on 01296 681666 or come along to our next meeting in the Village Hall 8pm on Thursday 5th December... You never know, you may actually ENJOY IT! Gerry

Cublington CHOIR rehearsals Rehearsals began for the choir on Monday 11 November and are continuing every Monday until the Carol Service on 22 December. All sessions will be at St Nicholas Church from 7.30pm-8.15pm Do please come and join in, it’s always good fun and you do not need to consider yourself a good singer, just keen. If you sing in the shower or the car then this is for you. We generally learn two or three carols which we sing as a choir and also practice the carols that we will sing with the congregation. The choir has also been invited to sing at a village wedding on 11 January for which the bride and groom will make a generous donation to Friends of St Nicholas so we will be learning a couple of contemporary songs for that. 1.What did you want to be when you grew up? I had wanderlust to see the world at 4 years old when I travelled to school by myself in a rural area. I wanted to be a like the bus driver up front. He could go where he pleased and I couldn’t! I have now have seen quite a lot of the planet, but never a had the skill to drive a bus. 2.What was your first job? My first holiday job was as a seaside deck chair attendant, charging a tanner each to to bask in the sunshine. If it rained we weren’t required to work and didn’t get paid. One week it rained a lot and I got less than £4 for the whole week! My first grown-up job was in the hospitality trade (strategic airy fairy nonsense, not at the sharp end). The great perk of this job was a monthly issue of a choice of free alcohol and even pop for the kids. 3.Who alive or dead would you like to have dinner with and why? Nigel Farrage, Boris Johnson and Hannibal the Cannibal. I would make my excuses, leave early, and lock the door. Have good meal, Hannibal! 4. What historical era would you liked to have lived in and why? What a horrible question! To paraphrase: which plague ridden age would you like to lived in with no sanitation and an early death from plague or some other incurable disease. No thanks! However if you insist then, as long as I can be a pharaoh and have a few concubines, I would opt for Ancient Egypt. 5. Where would you like to live if not where you live now and why? Anywhere within the sound of the sea to drop-off to in the evening. Somewhere like Cannes or Aberystwyth! 6. What is the temptation you wish you could resist? Let’s have another quick one (drink that is). This has got me in a lot of trouble over the years. 7. What is your favourite book and why? Hitchhikers Guide to The Galaxy. Funny, stupid, mind stretching, who could ask for anything more. How I would love an Infinite Improbability Drive! 8. What is your favourite song and why? Virtually anything by Chas and Dave or John Denver, but if forced to choose Ain’t No Pleasing You by Chas and Dave 9.What is the pet hate that makes your hackles rise? Insincere Platitudes like “You’re Welcome” or “Have a nice Day” instead of a smile or Cheerio. 10. What is the unlikely interest that engages your curiosity? Trying to understand why some people will spend £50 more per visit to shop in Tesco rather than Aldi 11. How long have you lived in Cublington? About 30 years

Answer:

Surviving the winter with some tips from St Judes Scientists are predicting the coldest winter in England in a decade – stay safe and healthy with a few expert tips from St Judes. • Avoid trips and slips – put rock salt on your steps and take extra care when walking - a pair of trekking over-shoes are useful for giving you the extra grip needed in the snow. • Shovelling snow – watch your back! Keep the shovel close to your body and get your legs to do the work. Don’t overload the shovel and take regular breaks. • Don’t be a couch potato – staying active boosts your mood and helps you to stay in shape. Exercise helps to increase your immune system and keep the colds and ‘flu at bay. If you’re running or doing sports outside in the winter: • Dress for the cold – wear layers rather than heavy clothing. A light weight moisture wicking base layer and leggings or running tights underneath a pair of shorts will help you stay warm. Avoid losing heat by wearing gloves and a hat/fleece headband.

Stay safe – be seen. Don’t wear dark colours – choose clothes that are bright, white or fluorescent yellow and add a reflective bib or strap. • Warm up and cool down - essential to avoid injury, start by walking for about 10 minutes and gradually increase your pace and maybe try some walking lunges or high knee skips. Cool down by running at a slow pace for 5 – 10 minutes and do some stretches inside so you don’t get cold. • It’s fine to exercise with a bit of a cold but listen to your body, and don’t exercise if you have a fever. For professional treatment and advice, contact your local Physiotherapist: St Judes Clinic, 26 Lake Street, Leighton Buzzard LU7 1RX. 01525 377751 enquries@stjudesclinic.com

The ‘covered’ Cublington Sign Someone asked me the other day what is going on with the Cublington Sign? After the criticism in the Best Kept Village report, it prompted me to act. I am in the process of renovating the sign over the next few months. The cover is to protect the carved wood from the winter storms while I gradually remove the old varnish and reapply a suitable wood preserver. I will endeavour to do it as quick as I can but as always, I have a lot on - like producing this publication every month. The weather is currently against me. But when I get an opportunity I will get it done. Gary
