What about changing your name? – Nope, getting married could sort that out or a trip to the deed poll office, or you could just tell everyone you want to be called something else (it worked for Prince) Nationality. Again no. After all you just need to be good at something with a tenuous link to that country and most of them will be happy to adopt you. Or you could just get yourself naturalised. What about our past – Unfortunately history has a way of changing even the most well catalogued events, we are also quite capable of remembering things over time in a distorted or completely different way. Our opinions, mine change all the time, actually come to think of it, no they don’t! Mistakes – I suppose we could always try to make amends and put them behind you but then so can everyone else. No, the one thing you possess that no-one else in the world can ever change is the ability to look out at the world from inside yourself. I have always tried with various degrees of success to try and see things from other people’s point of view. I sometimes get it right, but I am still in my own skin, not theirs and sometimes the assumptions I make are just wrong. If you feel passionate about something (and there is lots going on in the world right now) and someone doesn’t share that passion or even feels the complete opposite, then that is difficult to understand. So, at this special time of year, the best we can do is to try and imagine you are the person with whom you disagree, and although looking out from inside them is not possible, it may help you to be more tolerant of their view. Just a thought! Simon & Ness Morgan

Halloween Thank You

We were so impressed by everyone's level of participation and generosity over Halloween - what a great village! Not only did people with kids participate, but reports even of some scary people without children, answering doors in full costume and even dressing pets up, brilliant fun for the kids! Same again next year? PS it's not an American custom imported, the tradition originated with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, when people would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off ghosts.

Hi My name is Matilda Mountfield age 7years and I have lived in Cublington all my life and I love my village. The other day I went around the village collecting rubbish and found that most of what I collected had come from people's recycling bins. So please can everyone make sure they secure their bins to make sure all your good work does not go to waste! Keep an eye on your bins. Matilda age 7. Eco-Councilor Wingrave School Thank you. " Keep Cublington Tidy!"

* School or Uni holidays only The Crier can acceot no responsibility if any on the above list no longer babysit.

I think sometimes, odd bits get left behind after the bin lorry has been. So, perhaps do as Matilda suggests and check your space after a collection! Ed

Dedicate, Remember, Reflect, Share

Florence Nightingale Hospice Charity is offering a virtual Tree of Light commemoration service, Books of Honour, and an online dedication page to support those who have faced the loss of a loved one this year. From 5pm on Saturday 18th December until the New Year, the virtual Tree of Light commemoration service will be available to view on the Florence Nightingale Hospice Charity website. The service will provide space and time for families and friends to remember and share those treasured memories in a variety of different ways. There will also be readings and music with time to light a candle to take a moment of reflection and remembrance “We recognise Christmas can be a very emotional occasion, a time when we particularly think of loved ones who are no longer with us” says Ann Kenny, the Bereavement Support Team Lead at the Hospice. “These last couple of years have been enormous challenges for everybody, and sadly, many people have faced the loss of a loved one with little outlet to express their feelings properly. Whilst we cannot meet in person as usual at our traditional Tree of Light events, here at Florence Nightingale Hospice Charity, we felt it was incredibly important to still offer a safe space and time for reflection.” The Charity has also set up an online Tree of Light remembrance page where you can dedicate a memory to someone special. To make a dedication online, allowing friends and family all over the world to view, you can do so by visiting: fnhospice.dedicationpage.org/treeoflight2021 You can also have your dedication to your loved one appear in our Books of Honour, which will be available to view at the Charity’s Head Office in Aylesbury on selected dates in December. Lastly, you can also choose to have their name appear on our Roll of Honour which will be shown during our virtual Tree of Light Service. These additional dedications can be requested when you make your online dedication. To sponsor a dedication or to access the virtual Tree of Life service go to fnhospice.org.uk/tree-of-light or call 01296 429975 for more information.

The life of a vet! December at the vets! Christmas is a great time, a chance to share with our families and spend time with friends, both local and further afield. Our pets often get excited, as they sense our growing anticipation of the season, and we need to plan ahead, to minimise any stresses and accidents that can occur. Our pets don’t need presents and special meals at Christmas, but that doesn’t stop us getting pleasure from giving them a gift. Choose wisely as some toys and chews can be dangerous, either too easy to tear into bits (and swallow or choke) or with eyes or squeekers that can cause gut blockages. It is best to select a known brand as they should have ensured that the gift is safe (like toys for children). Please don’t feel that you are being unfair to your pet when they get a bowl of their normal food, while you tuck into the full Christmas Dinner. Quite a few of our foods can be toxic to pets and their tums may react to the change of food (There might be a nasty mess on Boxing Day!) In the weeks before Christmas, we spend a lot of time actually making ‘healthy’ pets sick (vomit)….usually because they have found the secret stash of mince pies (grapes in all their forms can cause acute kidney disease), eaten the Advent Calendar or the box of Celebrations (Chocolate is a No-No for dogs), eaten a week’s worth of Grandma’s medications or helped themselves to the Stilton (high fat foods often trigger pancreas inflammation – very painful). There are long lists of ‘Do Not Eat’ foods for our pets, check up or phone your vets, if you are not sure. If you arrive at your vets and we are looking subdued, and not quite as full of the Christmas Spirit as you would expect, that may be because we have been helping an owner say Goodbye to their pet. Sadly, in the three weeks before Christmas, we perform a high number of euthanasias, far higher than at other times of the year, and this can be very stressful for staff. We will do our best to smile and be cheerful for you, but please forgive if the smile slips slightly. Have a great Christmas, and we, at the Windmill, hope that your pet enjoys an equally fun time. Keep safe and healthy! Jane

Orchard Ground & North Field Latest report...

•At the recent AGM, the chairman gave this report. With 2020 marred by Covid 19 we all hoped that the roll out of the vaccine programme would allow us to return to some sort of normality in 2021. After a much-subdued Christmas, the year began with the annual Ground Force day which, despite participants having to adhere to social distancing rules, went very well. At the beginning of the seasons for Tennis and Cricket the pavilion was still out of bounds but as restrictions were lifted it gradually came back into use. June saw the return of the Cublington village fete which was a hugely successful event despite some choosing to stay away due to the ongoing Covid situation. A record amount of money was raised of which Orchard Ground got its share. A big Thank you has to go to Gary as the chair of the fete committee and his army of helpers that he cajoles into running the various stalls and attractions. We also had what is hoped to be the first of many arts events with Half cut theatre in July and the art exhibition in September. North Field finally got planning permission for change of use from agricultural to recreational and the work can finally begin on the next phase of the development of Orchard Ground. We still have the Ecological report to get approved but we are nearly there now. A big thank you has to go to Pippa Cheetham for her continued hard work on the North field project and specifically her help in obtaining planning permission. Apart from the fete, fundraising events for Orchard Ground haven't been what they used to be, but Bob has managed to continue to run the ever popular 100 Club with all the vigour and gusto that he is renowned for. Myself and Miranda also ran a live Zoom Bingo event which, although lacking in huge cash prizes, offered great entertainment during the post-Christmas lockdown. Now on to the Thank Yous. Firstly Thank you to Liz for ensuring that the pennies and pounds add up. Liz does a great job making sure that the money is all accounted for and giving updates at all the meetings. Thank you to Martyn whose tenacity for finding and applying for grants is unmatched. He has done sterling work again this year. Thank you to Vanessa for taking the minutes and keeping up with everything that happens at the meetings. Thank you to Jason for keeping on top of the maintenance issues which will continue to increase as the building ages. Thank you to Gary for his work chairing the fete committee, guiding the Tennis club and ensuring that the village has excellent Tennis facilities. Thank you to Michael for organising the ever-popular Ground Force day and stewarding the members, parents and players of the Cricket Club to ensure that the ground is in immaculate condition. It hasn't been an easy year for the club but they have been able to offer a more regular schedule of matches to club members. Thank you, Bob for regular updates regarding the Allotment Society, Table Tennis and being the smiling face of the 100 Club. Thank you, Lucy for your continued support at committee meetings, words of encouragement and making a great Pimm's at the fete. Thank you, Miranda for always coming up with new fundraising ideas. Also, a few thank yous to those not on the committee. Thank you to Martyn Gates for doing the informal annual audit of our accounts. Thank you to Hugh for trimming the hedges and for his support on the Parish Council. Thank you to Tim Taylor for keeping the cricket square and outfield looking incredible. Thank you to Pippa Cheetham for her continued support navigating the minefield that is the planning process. For next year, we have some, as yet unallocated, funds to spend and invest. Much of our time will be taken up doing that but we can't take our eye off the ball and we need to be looking to continue to raise more funds. Hopefully approval of the Ecological Report isn't far off and we can continue the development of North field. Fingers crossed we have seen the back of Covid and 2022 will be more like back to normal. Thank you team.

•Y our OG Committee currently is: Colin Antosiewicz, Chairman; Liz Smith, Treasurer; Vanessa Verity, Secretary; Jason Taylor, Maintenance; Bob Paine, Bookings & Allotments; Michael Reilly, Cricket & Parish Council; Gary Brazier, Tennis & General; Martyn Waters, North Field; Miranda Gregory, Events; Lucy Peck, General. All are volunteers. New committee members always wanted. Please volunteer to help on this committee if you can spare the odd hour or two every month. Minutes of AGM available on Cublington.com • The next committee meeting is tba - next AGM 7pm Weds 16th November

Church Services December

From the Rector

…And a star shone over the stable where the Christ child lay. One theme we’ll be exploring in December’s primary school assemblies is that of the Christmas star. We’ll begin with the question “how old is star light?” because of course, it takes years for star light to reach us so the images we have of the night sky are old; in some cases, very old. But here’s the thing – for all the time it takes for the light to reach us, that light has never slowed down, never stopped, never veered off. Light has fascinated humanity since our earliest days and for us in the darkness of a northern hemisphere winter, light has always been especially comforting. But we think of light metaphorically too; “oh, now I see!” and “a light bulb moment” meaning to understand and a contrast to being “in the dark”. Light is therefore used throughout the bible; at the start where God said let there be light to Christ, the Light of the world. At the very end of the bible, we read of Christ the bright Morning Star vanquishing darkness. Christ enables us to see. We crave light; both to actually see and metaphorically, to overcome the darkness of injustice, wrong, hatred. In Christ we find Light; Light to see by and in His name to bring justice, right and love in so many ways. So, of course a star shone over the stable where the Christ child lay; Christ never stops, never gives up, never changes his mind. With every blessing this Christmas, Rev’d Howard Robson.

A big ‘thank you’ to all those who

supported the very entertaining flower arranging evening, which raised £555 for church funds. We are very grateful to Evelyn for organising the evening and to Miss Dorothy Wright who whilst amusing us with her life story, made the most fantastic arrangements at the same time.

We had a very well attended event in the church and several people enjoyed taking the flowers home afterwards through the raffle. It was really impressive to see how Dorothy Wright (aka Neil Gurney) managed to entertain and do such great arrangements at the same time. A really skilled performance with much laughter and a few glasses of wine. Gina

The church would also like to thank Paul Sim of Willow GS who replaced the gear box on the church’s lawn mower but very kindly did not charge for his labour

A Christmas Thought A Christmas thought

The Bible contains 3,566,480 letters, 773,693 words, 31,102 Verses, 1,189 chapters and 56 Books. The longest chapter is the 119th Psalm and the shortest and middle chapter is the 118th Psalm and the longest name is in the eight chapter of Isaiah. The word ‘and’ occurs 46,277 times and the word ‘Lord’ occurs 1,855 times. The 37th chapter of Isaiah and the nineteenth chapter of the second Book of

Little quotes to use here thereThe longest verse is the ninth of the eighth Kings and are alike. Chapter of Esther: the shortest verse is the thirty fifth of The eleventh chapter of John. In the first verse of the 7th chapter of Ezra is the alphabet. The finest piece of reading is the 26th chapter of Acts. The name of God is not mentioned In the Book of Esther it contains knowledge, Wisdom, holiness, and love.

The above text was the work of Thomas Hartwell Horne, a Wesleyan Methodist of the 1790’s. It is an interesting study of the scriptures, but you have to wonder how much time it took to complete (no computers in those days!).

Roald Dahl:

“Where art thou, Mother Christmas? I only wish I knew Why Father should get all the praise And no-one mentions you”

J.R.R. Tolkien, The Hobbit: “If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world.”

Charles Dickens, A Christmas Carol: “I will honour Christmas in my heart, and try to keep it all the year.“

A history of Cublington - Lockdown

Census for the years 1921 and 1931 are not yet released owing to the 100 year rule, together with a delay! The last “official” Census was 1911 which was released about 12 months early. The 1939 Census was a one off due the start of hostilities, this enabled a check on population details and presumably it was also a way of tracing anyone of call up age that had escaped the net. The 1939 document was released some time later as it includes additional written married surnames of females listed under

There is of course a delay in dealing with the most recent amendments/adjustments. No inhabitant numbers or occupations have been listed as with all the “blackouts” this information would be meaningless. The Biggs family have been traced back to 1560 in Chearsley, Buckinghamshire, then Radnage, Bucks when they were split between Chinnor, Oxon and then Great Horwood, Aston Abbotts and finally Cublington in 1735 when Christopher Biggs married Elizabeth Gates.

Winter is on the way and with the cold weather it is important to ensure that your feet stay warm and dry. This is particularly important to those people in higher risk groups, such as diabetics, those with poor circulation, have medical conditions such as Raynaud’s disease, or whom may be more susceptible to damage from falls. Here are some tips that will keep your feet looking and feeling healthy this winter. Hard skin can build up at any time of the year on your feet mainly due to: • Excessive loading on certain parts of the sole of the feet. • Prominent bones. • Rubbing from footwear. There are many gadgets on the market for this task but I would give a word of caution with the big cheese grater types of hard skin removers. If you have one please use it carefully as it is very easy to get carried away and end up with sore tender feet as a result, and leaving an uneven finish affecting new skin. A better approach I would recommend is regularly filing with a foot file. Frequency is key, file first then use a foot cream developed especially for the feet rather than a cream moisturiser. Apply socks afterwards to increase the creams’ effectiveness. • Do not use talcum powder or moisturiser between your toes. • If your toes are tight together you may get an increase in moisture and debris. • For best results only use surgical spirit to clean between your toes. Toenail tips: always cut straight but you can follow the shape of the nail to prevent sharp edges. I would recommend that you also see a Podiatrist for maintenance of your feet. When they maybe treating corns and callouses, they can also check your feet for verrucae and fungal infections and advise you on appropriate action. Did you know that repetitive hard skin build-up can also indicate that you could be overloading one part of your foot? This can help provoke malalignments and injuries above your feet i.e., hips, knees and backs. So, if you think this might be you and your feet aren’t providing that stable platform that we need to walk efficiently, then gait analysis is recommended and advice on whether you need simple insoles, orthotics/exercises can be given to address this. At St Judes we have a team of four HCPC registered Podiatrists who can offer friendly expert treatment and advice – we’re open Monday to Saturdays. So why not give us a call? Reports County Councillors Katrina Holyoake, Community Board Co-Ordinator for the Wing and Ivinghoe board, visited Cublington on Friday 5th November along with Cllrs Blamires and Bond. Cllr Waters showed them the facilities at Orchard Ground and informed them of the plans for North Field. Cllr Waters has applied to the Community Board for grants on two projects and he was able to show how the grant money would be spent. Cllr Bond said the Community Board is sponsoring local champions award and it is looking for the CPC to nominate local citizens . Details of the award scheme will be sent to local PCs shortly. There are still shortages of planning officers which is causing major delays in processing planning applications . Cllr Reilly questioned Cllr Bond about Bucks Council rubbish collection policy and in particular the levy charges on selected waste items and whether the income generated from the levy covered the collection of illegal dumping. Cllr Bond is not privy to such information and Cllr Reilly thought the information might be forthcoming if he made a freedom of information request directly to the Council.

Orchard Ground/ North Field Report Cllr Waters has been able to get an extension on the deadline for the use of the grant from Heart of England due to the delays created by the Bucks Council planning office. The grant needs to be used by April 2022. Woodland Trust has a two month delay on delivery of 900 trees due to the shortage of HGV drivers. There is a problem with dog owners not collecting dog mess in North Field . The meeting was conscious there are a few professional dog walkers using North Field who might be causing this problem. A new dog bin will be bought when the landscaping plan is implemented and consideration will be made towards how to manage the professional dog walkers. In the mean time a notice will go up at the entrance to North Field reminder dog walkers of their responsibilities to use the dog bins provided. The draft lease is in progress and once it is ready for signing the proposed new charity will apply to the Charity’s Commission for registration. 6.1 Draft Lease Considerations The draft lease is with the lawyers for amendments.

M. Joy commented the delay was solely down to the lawyers , Parrott and Coales. He thought we ought to consider changing lawyers. Cllr Waters offered to contact them. It was agreed letters of comfort would be issued to the tennis and cricket clubs to ensure their use of current facilities would be for the next ten years and the draft lease allows for these occupancies to renew every ten years . Mr Lott has raised an issue concerning General Data Protection Regulations. Two members of the public have volunteered to assist with Speedwatch. A resolution of support was passed concerning the 20mph speed limit initiative advocated by Cllr Cooper . TfB should be giving us an update shortly about our traffic calming project. 8.2 Street Lighting: Cllr Antosiewicz reported 5 lights had been out but are now working. 8.3 Playground and maintenance The remedial work highlighted in the recent audit report has been completed. A draft sign setting out the responsibilities for the users of the playground was agreed. 8.4 Trees and Pond The pond has responded to the introduction of daphnia to it. 8.5 Path CPC has applied to the local community board for funding of a path from Silver Street to the playground . The estimated cost is £5,065 plus VAT . 8.6 Local Heritage List Ridings Cottage has been nominated for the local heritage list as a local significant asset. 8.8 Roads , Drains and Gullies There had been a village walkabout with Paul Foot , the Local Area Technician, highlighting areas of work that needed completing. 8.9 Thames Water works at Silver Street Bucks Council has been in regular contact with Thames Water about the sewage pipes. The work had been scheduled to start on 22 November but the issue of accessibility for two large lorries had been raised which meant a site survey is required to consider whether road closures will be necessary etc. The work can’t be started until the survey has been completed. The next meeting of the Parish Council and annual general meeting will take place on Tuesday 11th January 2022 7.30pm at Orchard Ground.

Drivers need to be aware that pedestrians can be very unpredictable and may step into the road without looking. In particular watch out for children and older people who may not have seen or heard you or may be unable to judge your speed. Drive carefully and slowly and be prepared to stop. Look out for cyclists who may swerve suddenly for example to avoid an obstacle, if there is a poor road surface, due to windy weather or car doors opening suddenly. We are extremely proud of being able to do this and would like an independent arbiter (a volunteer please) to join us and help with overseeing this use of Crier funds. So, do you know of any local businesses who might like to advertise in the Crier? Or do you have an idea for a fundraising project that we could seed fund? SPOTTED!

PLEASE keep your eyes peeled ... If you spot

anything, and we really do mean anything of interest (silly or serious or even just slightly interesting) in the village - please let us know.

Spotted

Beautiful poppy arch for the Remembrance Day celebrations. Well done you crafters!

Spotted

New house finally finished on the High Street. Note to self! One more Crier required!

Spotted

This poppy came out in our garden on November 11th. Extraordinary.

Spotted large bush blown down at the play area recently. Thanks to Mike Joy for clearing it away.

Spotted the start of the path scraped away leading

to the play area... a grant application has been made to have a proper path put in! Fingers crossed it happens.

Spotted

Wing Air Cadets reenacting the Remembrance Day parade from years ago on a brilliant video. If anyone is interested to see it please let me know. gary@cublingtoncrier.co.uk

Spotted

Chris Brandon doing a sterling job replacing the rotten boards on the allotment shed. Well done and thank you Chris! Works carried out thanks to a grant from Arnold Clark sourced by Martyn Waters.

, I M really getting fed up of this! Spotted

On the footpath leading past the smallholding... all these pictures are taken over about 30 feet. Someone's dog is crapping large amounts as soon as they get through the gate. This is unacceptable from whoever owns this dog. IT IS AN OFFENCE TO ALLOW YOUR DOG TO DEFECATE ON A PUBLIC FOOTPATH! Please clean it up, please be a responsible dog owner and please do not let it happen again. Thank you

mo re win t ha dows n ev er thi s ye ar!

Cublington's 5th ADVENT Trail From 1st December, each evening will see additional windows lit, in our fourth Advent Trail. Look on the map and plan your route around the village, as more than one window might appear each day. By the time we reach 24th December, 36 different windows will have been lit and our church will be open, for visitors to finish their Advent walk and partake in some carols and mince pies. Windows are lit from 6pm - 9pm and are visible from the pavement or road. Some may need a keen eye to spot them! Please do not trespass onto private driveways or gardens. On Christmas Eve, the Walk around the trail will start at 6pm from the Unicorn, finishing in the church for some carols (and afterwards, back to the Unicorn!). It is a lovely way to start Christmas, The Unicorn will hopefully, as usual, be extending a welcome to all walkers!

PS: We are going global!, our Facebook page has interest around the country and further!
