Second up is Gary Brazier

From a very young age I spent many hours copying famous pictures and I recently came across some very early examples buried deep somewhere in my studio. I think I’ve evolved a bit from those early efforts but I still am tortured by a blank canvas as I think many artists are. I always seem to need a deadline or a commission to get started. Over the years I have tried many styles and at 63 am still searching for my own “unique style” ... meanwhile I keep trying new subjects, (figures and portraits) mediums and different techniques when I do eventually force myself to make a mark on that blank piece of paper or canvas. Anyway, here are some of my personal favourites and ones of local interest perhaps, from fairly recent times.

Personal Gift - acyrilic on canvas

Hope you enjoy them.

“Wait for me Bubs”- acyrilic on canvas

Whitchurch Hill - #2 - acyrilic on canvas

‘Duffy’ - charcoal study Finlay on the beach - acyrilic on board

Cloud study - acyrilic on paper

More on the inside back cover.

Editorial

Welcome to:

The new rector Howard Johnson and his wife Joanne. We hope you will be very happy as Team Rector of the Cottesloe Benefice.

I really quite liked the lockdown (some of it). Strange as it may sound, I quite liked it. I appreciate that I speak from a privileged position of being retired and not having to worry about my job, but I quite liked bits of it, especially living in Cublington. No cars on the road, no diary items, no appointments, no planes overhead, no shopping (Thanks Amy and Ness), no tennis teams to arrange, no stress. The silence, the birdsong, the community that sprang up from all over the village, everyone stopping for a chat. Spending real quality time with my dad, keeping him safe and secure. Doing puzzles, doing Sudukos. In exchange dad insisted on keeping the garden tidy, so he could feel useful and not a burden. He jetwashed the patios, he trimmed, he strimmed, he edged, he weeded, he tidied, he cleared the leaves, he cut, he hacked, he decimated areas, some that were plants. “That’s a plant “we cried - “Was “he replied! (We’re actually quite glad he’s going home!) Not really - we’ll miss him, but he really wanted to go home. Then there were the obvious drawbacks of not being able to see the family and hug the kids and grandkids (torture). Not being able to really see friends except at a social distance over the garden gate or on a walk perhaps. Not being able to play sport! (more torture) And then there was Zoom... what a great tool. It put us in touch with friends and family and we shared drinks and quizzes... (more of those later in this edition). Even dad at 89 got involved with his pub mates on a Zoom call, though in truth I’m not sure he heard that much. We drew, we baked, we decorated, we painted, we read, we binge watched, it was quite alright really wasn’t it?! Even some of those furloughed seemed to enjoy being paid for doing nothing. (Who wouldn’t?!). But now it’s time to start getting back to some normality, accepting that there might be some risk involved getting back out there. As we emerge from lockdown we enter a totally different phase, brought home to me the other night when I picked up my takeaway from the pub. While I was waiting I had a quick drink (because I was supporting the pub of course) “please fill in this slip” they said, “for track and trace purposes”. So now I’m on tenterhooks for two weeks in case anyone who visited that night might have it. Tentatively we are starting to visit shops, but would rather not. Getting your online shopping delivered was rather fun wasn’t it. A bit like Christmas every day! “Oooo I wonder what this can be” says Gill! But of course we spare a thought for all the great unsung heroes who worked right through. The shop workers, the delivery drivers, the essential workers, and the fabulous NHS. We clapped, we thanked and talked and re-engaged with our neighbours, some perhaps for the first time. It was a strange time, a sad time for too many, but some good has come out of it as well. Society may well have changed forever, so make the best of it whatever it now A personal view by Gary Brazier is. Enjoy life. Enjoy living, but stay alert and above all stay safe.

The Crier online...

Available at www.issuu.com

Thanks to:

Martyn Waters who stepped in to help deliver the Criers during the recent lockdown. Your help was very much appreciated. And thanks to everyone who has lent us puzzles, looked out for him and pointed him homewards. My dad has returned to his home now the lockdown is easing. Three of his sons (including me) will take it in turns to stay with him and reintegrate him back into village life in Brookmans Park, Herts. The other brother lives in Adelaide, so he’s off the hook!

Well I never!!!

Penny Allen and I, in conversation, found out that we had both attended the same art school classes (some years apart admittedly) but had drawn the same life model. The Englishman in New York - none other than Quentin Crisp! ( The Naked Civil Servant) Gill and I apparently even went on the same bus as Penny (the 343), but in different directions!

Thanks for the feedback We’ve had many nice comments about the last issue, in particular Roger’s stained glass feature. In this issue I am stepping up to share some of my art in the hope that others will agree to follow. We hope to publish more colour pages in the future but costs obviously increase. So, if you have a business that would like to advertise in the Crier, just let us know.

Cublington Crier

Keeping you up to date on village life, news and events since 1984

The monthly magazine of the Buckinghamshire village of Cublington - the village that moved.

I do sometimes change this bit so please read on...

The Crier is a major source of information and we decided that we would, unusually, publish in August as many people may not be going on holiday this year and might need some entertaining. Can we remind you to keep looking at the www.cublington.com website for up to date information about Covid and other items of interest. We urge you to please use the Crier as a forum and interact with it. Perhaps write a letter to someone or everyone or write a poem or an article. We love getting your spotteds, letters, photos and articles, so please keep them coming. The village support network that sprung into action was a godsend to many and if anyone needs any help of any sort as we move forward out of lockdown, again, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Stay Alert. Stay safe. Stay at a distance. Respect other’s space. If you are willing to help in any way... whether it be delivering, writing the odd letter, or sending an article you think might be of interest or any sort of regular contributions like Who Am I? Please do it as The Crier only survives with content. The editororial team really can't be expected to do everything every month. The guest editor list is now being compiled 2022. Yes! we really do plan that far ahead! If asked, please do your bit for the community and join in... it’s actually a bit of fun!

Recent letters to national newspapers that are relevant perhaps to this situation. Make sure you object! Ed

Ridings Cottage, Ridings Way, Cublington There is a planning application to demolish Ridings Cottage and replace it with three large five-bedroom houses. The reference for the application is 20/02133/APP As you may be aware, this cottage is thought to be the oldest property in the village with examples of 17th, 18th and 19th Century architecture and possibly incorporates materials used in the old medieval village. The Parish Council strongly objects to the proposal to demolish this important part of the history of the village. The Parish Council also objects to the proposal to build three large houses in its place which it feels are too large for the site and are of a style that is not in keeping with a rural environment. We hope residents will object to this development, and it is important that the planning officer is aware of your views. The easiest way to lodge your objection is online by using link below to the planning application: https://publicaccess.aylesburyvaledc.gov.uk/online-applications/applicationDetails.do?activeTab=documents&keyVal=QCUJBUCLN2800 1. Click tab towards the top of the page called “Make a Comment, 2. Complete page with your information, 3. On Stance tick object, 4. Complete your comments in the box section at the bottom of the page. If you need any assistance in making your objection, or would like any further information about Ridings Cottage please contact the parish clerk cublingtonpc.clerk@gmail.com The closing date for comments is 27/08/2020.

With news that the planning application for Ridings Way could destroy the character of this quiet village lane forever, some have suggested that it is indeed a holloway - an ancient path worn down over time.

So what are Holloways?

Well the name Holloway comes from the anglo-saxon word which literally means ‘sunken road’, and they date from at least 300 years ago, many going back as far as the iron age. They started life as either drove trails used to move cattle and other animals from farms to markets, routes from inland to the sea ports, pilgrimage routes, or simply boundary ditches. I am not sure whether the term Holloway would have been applied much when the usage of these ‘highways’ was at its peak – I suspect they might well have been referred to as simply ‘lanes’. Ed

I always trawl through newspapers and spot articles that interest me... I hope they do you too. Thanks to the Telegraph, The Week and the Daily Express . Ed I think we always suspected this didn’t we!

I struggle against Gill at Scrabble at the best of times, but I agree, this is a step too far!

As we come out of lockdown and start venturing out, lots of people ask if it’s safe to do so.? I guess there’s risk associated with just crossing the road and people will have to adjust to the new normal.

With news that there is perhaps to be a thirteenth constellation... I suggest there is absolutely no way whatsoever that I am Pisces and could be described as romantic, and compassionate. I’ll stick with Aries thanks - fiery, energetic, competitive and independent. What a load of nonsense!

Church Update August From Howard Robson, the new Rector Hello Everyone, This is the first of my contributions to the Cublington Crier and it is to introduce myself; Rev’d Howard Robson, Team Rector of the Cottesloe Benefice which of course includes Cublington. My wife Joanna and I arrived here June 16th and I was licenced on June 23rd. Since then I’ve had several meetings around the Group to meet folk from the eight churches and a very good and interesting time it has been. We’ve moved from the community of Littleport in E Cambridgeshire, a place of ten thousand people, after being Vicar there for nearly seven years. Before that we were in South Norfolk with a group of five villages. We have three adult sons and two, shortly to be three, grandchildren though they live in Australia. Joanna is an avid quilter and keen amateur photographer and I enjoy sedate canoeing, fell walking and classic, some say just old, cars. Before ordination I worked for a high street bank and having now been ordained for twenty years, I have always worked in parish ministry. There are remarkable cross overs between money and faith and I also have a keen interest in the way the church speaks about the Gospel; different ways of doing church proclaim the same Gospel message of Christ’s redeeming love and power. I’m very much looking forward to meeting you over the forthcoming weeks and months as the churches reopen, but should you wish to be in touch, please do so: 01296 688593. Wishing you every blessing, Howard

Church Services August The church will have a service every week, 9am, 2nd First Sunday with Annie 9th Holy Communion with Ina Oglevy 16th Layfed, Churchyard On-line service, all welcome! 23rd Holy Communion 30th - No service If you would like your names added to our church email list, we will forward information about online services and links. Please also ‘like’ the St Nicholas page on Facebook, again to get information and service updates.

NO dates for your diary yet PLEASE let us know of any event in the village you are running. If we don't know about it we can't help publicise it. By the 15th of every month before please.

Saturday 5th 16th Cublington Horticultural Show

Now sadly postponed

1.What did you want to be when you grew up? After discarding the idea of a career as a pop or film star (around the age of 9), I much later thought I might like to be a probation officer. 2. What was your first job? Holiday job as a “fabric layer” in a textile factory. First proper job was a hospital social worker in the East End of London. 3. Who (alive or dead) would you like to have dinner with and why? (You can have more than one!) Boudicca and Anne Boleyn to tell me more about their fascinating lives, while Neil Diamond serenades me and Colin Firth charms me. Delia Smith can cook. 4. What historical era would you like to have lived in and why? Whether rich or poor, there was very little freedom of choice for women in the past; wealthy women were married off for social or financial gain while the poor had no chance of an interesting career. I’ll stay where I am, thank you. 5. Where would you want to live if not where you live now and why? I could only be happy living near to friends or relatives, so that’s London, Devon or the Peak District. 6. What is the temptation you wish you could resist? White wine and chocolate. 7. What is your favourite book and why? I return time and again to 2 books by Colin Thubron – Falling and A Cruel Madness. Both short but very deep. I recommend them. 8. What is your favourite song and why? Who Knows Where the Time Goes? by Sandy Denny. Gorgeous voice and very nostalgic. 9. What is the pet hate that makes your hackles rise? Aggressive driving, inappropriate apostrophes and middle management cliches. Don’t say “going forward”. What’s wrong with “in the future”? 10. What is the unlikely interest that engages your curiosity? Elementary geology; why is that mountain there? What did this place look like millions of years ago? 11. How long have you lived in Cublington? 29 years

16th Cublington Horticultural Show 2020

D E L L E C A NC

It is very disappointing but probably no surprise to everyone that we have had to cancel the Cublington Horticultural Show. Looking at the government guidelines we cannot hold the event without some risk, so consider this year a practise run for greater entries next year.

I think I have contacted all those who kindly agreed to sponsor categories, many thanks to them. I can still come and measure sunflowers in-situ and put the results in the next Crier with rosettes to the tallest sunflowers grown by under 14’s. (contact Sandie Joy on 01296 682446) Let us hope 2021 sees a return to all the events which make this village such a good community.

Many thanks to the amazing Gwyneira who must now be making masks in her sleep having supplied hundreds over the past months and has donated a further £287 to Friends of St Nicholas having already donated £240 last month. Thank You

In a recent Crier I remember someone saying that if you were replacing a boiler in the near future to consider Air Source Heat Pump. Well we were and we did. We had a new system installed recently and with the Renewable Heat Incentive grant scheme, we will get all our installation money back over 7 years! Yes seriously. In the end the decision was a no brainer. If anyone wants to come and see it and discuss the possiblilities of heat and hot water from thin air, I’m more than happy to show you how it works.

Re The Ridings Cottage Planning Application Just to clear up a few procedural points as we all finalise our thoughts on the planning application at Ridings Cottage... It is clearer for the planning officer if you definitively say that you are objecting to the application - then there is absolutely no ambiguity. Try not to all make the same points as the report can then say “15 residents all said...” and it weakens the strength of feeling. Don’t be too emotional in your response - stick to the planning points. Anything environmental is a valid planning matter - heritage, design, loss of trees, traffic and drainage are all valid points. Mix the points up a bit. My personal view is that this is a ‘throw away’ application. Its been poorly put together and they will come in again for 2 dwellings picking up on all points that they’ve failed on this time around. That one will be harder for the Council to resist. On that basis, you might want to set out what type of development you would consider acceptable. Pippa Basis for objections are circulating on email. If anyone would like them, please email me at gary@cublington.com

Orchard Ground News & general items of interest •T he Cricket Club continues to cut and maintain the grass areas of Orchard Ground in spite of the fact their competitive season has been wiped out. Friendly games are now taking place. Our thanks to them for keeping up the mowing of communal areas. The cricket nets are open on a booking system basis. Junior Training has recommenced on a Sunday morning. • The tennis courts are also now fully open. See also ad and guidelines elsewhere.

•T he Cricket Club has dug up and reseeded an area of Poa grass contagion They hope to continue treating the rest of the contagion at the end of the season.

•T he Tennis Club has restarted league tennis, with several matches from last winter season to complete A new winter season will start in October..

•M artyn Waters Reports about the latest grants OGA has received a grant from Buckinghamshire Council of £10,000. This is from the covid support monies coming from central government. Initially we thought that OGA was outside of this scheme, but thanks to the advice and persistence from Sophie O’Toole who heads up the girls and ladies cricket with CCC, a quiet simple application was submitted to Buckinghamshire Council and the money is now in the OG bank account. A wide range of support grants are being made available via local authorities at this current time. OG will have a major shortfall in it’s income for this year, as in past years a donation of £1,000 has been forthcoming from the village fete (cancelled) and the quiz night (cancelled) at the end of March would have raised approx £1,000 net, when we take into account the cash bar takings and the list of those who had bought tickets! A barn dance was also planned for later in the summer, together with loss of income from club rents and bookings. • A Sport England Grant of £1,940 will go some way towards the utilities, running costs, maintenance etc. for the period March to end July but this current situation of social distancing and restrictions on the size of gatherings is not likely to end soon. In addition, OGC made a commitment to match the £1,500 offered from Cublington Parish Council towards the planning application costs for North Field, so OG has a forward commitment to spend £1,500 for this. • The Tree Council has a new grant scheme for community organisations to encourage tree planting between Nov 2020 and March 2021. Grants from £300 - £1500 max, the Tree Council grants can be for trees, hedging and fruit trees; also stakes, ties, mulch etc. but they will not pay VAT/delivery costs. All trees/hedges must have certificates of providence and biosecurity; only native trees will meet the criteria and they must be in keeping with local flora. We have applied for a grant.

•1 00 Club 2020/21 Sellers will be knocking on your door shortly to sell the remaining tickets using socially distanced procedures. Meanwhile, if you would like to buy a ticket and support the developments at Orchard Ground and the new North Field, tickets are priced £12 for 10 draws with (last year) £140 in prizes every draw. Most years this raises over £1500 for OG funds and has been a valuable source of funds from the beginning. This year will be different with a reduced prize fund available based on fewer sales. Please email Bob to reserve your ticket should you not wish to buy at the door. See ad elsewhere for more details. asyfundraising - raise funds as you shop online while self isolating!! This has so far raised •E over £796.02 for Orchard Ground - We now have 38 villagers participating (14 more than a year ago! but surely there’s more of you who buy online?!) - Villagers who buy goods online could raise money for Orchard Ground for doing nothing other than a couple of clicks. We appeal to you to help us boost our numbers. See opposite or please speak to Bob Paine for more information on how to set it up - or see posters in the Biggs Pavilion.

•Y our OG Committee currently is: Colin Antosiewicz, Chairman; Liz Smith, Treasurer; Vanessa Verity, Secretary; Jason Taylor, Maintenance; Bob Paine, Bookings & Allotments; Michael Reilly, Cricket & Parish Council; Gary Brazier, Tennis & General; Martyn Waters, North Field; Pippa Cheetham North Field; Miranda Gregory, Events; Lucy Peck, General

New committee members always wanted. Please volunteer to help on this committee if you can spare the odd hour or two every month. Minutes of AGM available on Cublington.com • The committee met recently via zoom.

Non-Fiction Letters of Note edited by Shaun Usher There are several different books by Shaun Usher, all collecting interesting letters from notable figures throughout history. You can read many of these for free at lettersofnote.com, or buy/borrow on of the curated collections. Recent releases have been themed around Love, Music, Cats, Mothers, Fathers, War, and Art. Totally absorbing.

Fiction for Teens

Fiction for Adults Red, White and Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston A sweet, fun queer romance between the fictional Henry, Prince of Wales and Alex, First Son of the United States. When Alex accidentally causes an international incident by colliding with a cake, the pair’s publicists decide that the best solution is for them to feign a friendship. Soon, however, the friendship becomes real, and then more than friendship. Completely unrealistic, but entertaining!

Fiction for Kids

Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein

The Infinite by Patience Agbabi

(most suitable for ages 14+)

(most suitable for ages 9-11)

One of my absolute favourite books, this is the story of two brave young women in World War Two: one a mechanic and pilot,

A brand new title, so I haven’t read it yet, but this is the first in a series that looks super exciting!

the other a spy. Best friends, the two characters are separated when their spy plane crash lands in Nazioccupied France. The story is told in the frantic writings of Verity, while she is held captive by the Gestapo and interrogated about her mission. It’s devastating and harrowing, yet beautiful and somehow romantic.

Leaplings, children born on the 29th of February, are very rare. Rarer still are Leaplings with The Gift - the ability to leap through time. Elle Bibi-Imbelé Ifiè has The Gift, but she's never used it. Until now. On her twelfth birthday, Elle and her best friend Big Ben travel to the Time Squad Centre in 2048. Elle has received a mysterious warning from the future. Other Leaplings are disappearing in time - and not everyone at the centre can be trusted...

Martina collects my ironing every Tuesday and returns it on Thursday. Great job, never had any problems. Martina is always reliable, accommodating and cheerful. When my washing machine broke Martina took all the laundry and ironing, a great service, I can not recommend her highly enough. Debbie (Cublington resident)
