The Crier online...

Available at www.issuu.com

Spring officially began on the 20th March, but it doesn’t feel quite like it’s actually happening until you start to see lambs in the fields and a bit more sunshine. Then come more rabbits, deer, garden birds and wildflowers. For that reason, I love April. It’s a good time to consider our wildlife neighbours. Spring is one of the most important times to keep the bird feeder well-stocked as busy parents need to keep their babies fed. You might also see baby birds that look to be in need of help, but they’re just taking their first steps into the big wide world, and spend a few weeks on the ground foraging while they learn to fly. It’s lovely to see them; they’re very cute and fluffy at this stage! The hedgehogs also start waking up from their sleep over winter, so to encourage the prickly visitors, leave out some pet food and water. Bread and milk is a famous treat, but one that’s sure to make hedgehogs rather roly-poly… Most importantly, though, I think it’s the best time to get your wellies on and get outside and see it! Even if I don’t see the deer and rabbits in the flesh, I love to see their prints in the mud. Just today, I saw badger tracks of what appeared to be mum and babies. Lots of bird species are coming back from their winter holidays so it’s sounding a lot more spring-like out there, too. It’s wonderful to get the sun on your face again, and if you take the dog with you, they’ll love it too – although that’s a guaranteed way not to see any deer or rabbits! (Not sure about that - my dog just loves chasing deer! -Ed) I hope everyone enjoys April, especially the Easter bank holiday. No:

Litterpick and village tidy up Huge thanks to the following who turned out and spent, in some cases, five hours trawling the ditches collecting around 30 bags of rubbish. Newbies Penny and Dennis, Kathy Parish, Bob Paine, Liz Smith, Martin Gibby, Chris and Maggie Brandon, Colin and Jan Antoseiwicz, Steve George, Ev Griffiths and Martyn Waters. Thanks especially to Graham Dunne for his tireless work down the AA road and for going round afterwards with his trailer. You are an absolute star! Apologies for the apparent lack of organisation - all I did was put a date in the Crier! No sooner had we finished, than someone had thrown their lunch bag out! Unbelievable! Anyway, once again well done - your village thanks you! Gary

Cublington.... the village that moved. I have often been told that Ridings Way where I live, was once locally known as the “East End as it was originally at the east side of the old village, even though it is now to the west of the current one! Before I retired I always promised myself that one day I would research the old village and publish what I found, so here it is. The following is reproduced from many different sources and I hope it all makes historical sense. Several archeological surveys have been carried out but sadly little original documentation now survives. I have tried to find all the relevant information and hope the four page insert, with this Crier, is of interest to those who live in Cublington.... the village that moved. With grateful thanks to Andrew Pike and to Julia Wise, Historic Environment Record Officer of Bucks CC for all their help.

Sir Being housebound following an unfortunate accident with a gorilla at Whipsnade last year I find your publication the only highlight of a dour and meaningless week as I await surgery. However can you share my utter dismay after I eagerly sent my carer out to pick up the latest edition of your award winning journal to discover, despite saying it does on the front cover, there were no letters included this week I was so disappointed I dropped my milk carton and had to send my carer out again in this awful weather risking his life to get another pint. I only hope this was a one off as I look forward to those letters like my carer does to a day not having to walk 4 miles to get said milk Thank you Disappointed local Dear Disappointed Local Thank you for your kind words, though perhaps we can suggest that you should also go to Specsavers while you are waiting for your surgery, as there was indeed a letter in the last issue. The clue is always the letterbox (seen above) that always appears beside the letter. We at the Crier clearly welcome all correspondance on whatever topic, as is illustrated by our publishing yours. Kind regards, Ed Cor - you wait for one, and two come along in the same issue! Happy reading. I wrote on your website that my great-grandfather his first wife and their children resided at the Unicorn (December 1914). What I have found is that they ran the Unicorn for a time. I know this because it was listed on the census that he was the “publican” there. He was born in Cublington, the son of Thomas Eggleton White, a Blacksmith and Sarah Ann Stevens, daughter of John Stevens and Martha Rose. Albert George White b. 1850 Cublington married firstly Annie Halsey, daughter of Benjamin Halsey and Hannah Higgens. Their tenure would have been late 1800s, they married in 1875 and they appeared in the 1881 census. By the 1900s the family had moved to Bicester. It appeared to me that the Halsey family had several members who were publicans, so I wonder if it was Annie who was primarily responsible for the running of the place. They had at least three children: Ada Annie White, Amy Ethel White and Arthur John White. Albert come home from a trip to London to find Annie draped across the crib (ostensibly with Arthur in it) having died. Very shortly thereafter, Albert married Minnie Caroline Susan Cheese, daughter of William Cheese and Elizabeth Rose. Albert and Minnie were second cousins to each other they shared great-grandparents George Rose and Susannah Mead of Wing. After Annie died in 1894, I don’t know how long he would have run it, but by 1891 Census, still in Cublington, Albert was listing his profession as “farmer” only one of his three children with Annie were living with them. The other daughter had gone to live with relatives and the son went to live with Albert’s brother Lewis, a Blacksmith, to learn the trade. Eventually he did marry, but I’ve never discovered the documents that show to whom and whether or not he had children. He and his new wife had by the 1891 census had some children. I imagine the decision to send two of the three to relatives was done out of sheer necessity. His youngest daughter Mildred met an American fighting with the Canadian forces during WWI they married and ended up living in America by way of Canada at Thunder Bay because my grandfather had joined with the Canadian forces before America had entered the Great War and America takes a fairly dim view of citizens joining the military of other countries, even close allies like Canada. Because under UK law at the time a woman assumed the nationality of her husband when they married and because my grandfather had effectively revoked his citizenship, they both were stateless. Canada offered compassionate immigration due to his service during the Great War. The United States some years later reconsidered the matter and reinstituted his nationality and conferred naturalized status to my grandmother. Her youngest daughter is my mother. Lauren Gessler, Shelton, WA, USA

Great that the website has such a global readership... I always find these letters fascinating. Don't you? Ed

All change for Hospice’s Midnight Walk In 2018, Florence Nightingale Hospice Charity’s annual Midnight Walk will change in two important ways. “We asked the public whether they would like the event to be opened out to men and boys as well as women and girls,” explains Jo Turner, Head of Fundraising at Florence Nightingale Hospice Charity (FNHC). “We ran a survey in November and December last year, and 80% of the respondents said they would like men to be allowed to take part.” While the majority of respondents were in favour of men joining the Walk, some fear that it will change the unique atmosphere of the event. “It's nice to celebrate with girlfriends in a relaxed atmosphere. I feel that may change and become more competitive,” said one respondent. However, many comments also pointed out that men wish to support the Hospice as well. “Men also lose loved ones to cancer or suffer from cancer just the same as ladies,” one lady wrote, while another said, “Why not, the more the merrier, it's raising money for a brilliant cause. Males look good in pink and flashing lights.” Responding to the results, the FNHC Events team decided that the 2018 Midnight Walk should be open to everyone over the age of 11 on the 23rd June. The Charity also asked survey respondents if they would prefer to keep the distance options the same, or change them to a 5 mile route and a 10 mile route. “54% of respondents to our research said they would prefer a choice of five miles or ten miles, and so we have decided to trial these distances,” says Jo. “This means that the routes will change significantly, and although we are still at the

planning stages, it seems likely that the ten mile route will go via Weston Turville and Aston Clinton, while the five mile route will split off the Wendover Road and go down Bedgrove, returning via the A41.”

The new look Midnight Walk will take place on 23 June 2018, starting and finishing at Aylesbury College as usual. The Midnight Walk is FNHC’s largest fundraising event and last year raised over £55,000 with 475 Walkers dressed in the event’s iconic dayglo pink T-shirts and flashing bunny ears. “One thing that won’t be changing is the Midnight Walk “uniform”,” says Jo Turner. “The flashing ears are spectacular, and the T-shirts in ‘Safety Pink’ help to keep Walkers visible as well as being traditional!” The money raised by Midnight Walkers makes a huge contribution to enable Florence Nightingale Hospice Charity to continue to provide services to patients with life-limiting illnesses at the Hospice and at home, and this year the Charity hopes the changes to the event will increase the number of Walkers and the amount raised for the Hospice. Registration is £20. Walkers receive a free souvenir Midnight Walk 2018 T-shirt, as well as a medal and complimentary breakfast at the end of the Walk.

The Orchard Ground facility is owned by everyone in The Biggs Pavilion the village and the Parish Council ceded the running and maintenance of it to The Orchard Ground Committee.

Orchard Ground

Every year they have to raise the funds to cover everything from cutting the grass, to replacing broken heaters, to paying the electric and insurance, to painting the benches and keeping it all in a servicable condition when things go wrong. The facility is now 20 years old and some things need replacing/updating - hence the push for funds. Even if you just walk your dog on Orchard Ground, please buy a ticket and support YOUR facility. Remember, having a quality, well looked after village amenity will also enhance the value of your property, so £12 is probably a small price to pay! Thank You!

New tickets now on sale... from any Orchard Ground Committee member: Duncan Mack, Bob Paine, Liz Smith, Gary Brazier, Colin Antosiewicz, Mark Cheetham, Miranda Gregory, Martyn Waters, Michael Reilly and Lucy Peck.

Please support your village community facility by buying a ticket or two! £1350 given in prize money last year! ( 50% of sales) • The more who buy a ticket the bigger the prizes. Please support this village fundraising initiative when the new round of draws starts in May. • Still only £12 for 10 draws New standing order initiative being introduced... ask your seller for the bank details. This will mean you never have to remember to buy a ticket - it'll automatically be delivered to your door! Brilliant.

Interesting facts The ticket price hasn't changed in 25 years! Great value for money! Over £26,000 given away in prize money! Over £26,000 raised for village organisations. Every year, every cricket club membership is required to buy a ticket as part of their subscription.

From the Reverend Dear friends, Happy Easter to you all and here's hoping goodbye to the end of wintery weather! March saw the death of two great Englishmen: Sir Ken Dodd and Professor Stephen Hawking. Ken Dodd was one of the greatest comedians our country has produced and Hawking was a great theoretical physicist responsible for four areas of development. I have seen Ken Dodd perform twice in a theatre (both times his act lasted more than three hours and I ached from laughter for days after!) I also had the priviledge of hearing him address the Prison Chaplains' Conference in the Adelphi Hotel,Liverpool in 1997 and his comments we're incredibly apt and hilarious as well as inciteful. I've seen Hawking on The Big Bang Theory and The Simpson's and he also clearly had a rich sense of

humour.I never heard him lecture (I probably wouldn't have understood very much, like most of us) but I did buy "A Brief History of Time" when it was published and read a whole 50 pages before I gave up the unequal struggle. Much of Hawking's work will remain theoretical and even be superseded by other discoveries in the next few years. That doesn't downgrade its importance for now. Two great Englishmen---who was the greatest, who gave us most? Not possible to say I think because one fed our hearts and spirits and dealt with issues of everyday life and the other challenged our intellect to greater enquiry on a literally cosmic scale. One had a belief in God,one did not but either way both have given a lot and can prompt us to thank God for their time with us and especially at this time when we remember the great gift of hope which Jesus gives us through His resurrection at Easter time. God Bless Reverend Philip Derbyshire

Is your neck the cause of that headache? Headaches affect almost two thirds of the population and many people often take painkillers without actually discovering the cause of the headache.

and an intervertebral disc between each vertebra. The joints that most commonly cause headaches are the upper facet joints. These should normally glide freely to allow neck movements. However, if the joint, surrounding muscles or ligaments are injured, then the joints can become stiff and the spinal nerves irritated causing referred pain into the head or behind the eyes.

There are many different causes of headache but neck pain can be a factor to consider. Do you have any of the following: • A constant dull steady ache, often at the back of your head but sometimes behind the eyes, or temple or on top of the head. • A headache present for days, weeks or months. • The headache is worse with certain movements or sustained postures. • There is a history of trauma to the neck eg whiplash, sporting injury or repetitive work. • The neck movements are restricted. The cervical spine (neck) is made up of 7 vertebrae (bones) which stack on top of each other. The vertebrae are linked together by facet joints which are either side of the neck

If the headache is caused by the neck then physiotherapy can often be beneficial. After an assessment, a treatment programme can be suggested. This may include joint mobilisation to help restore full pain-free range of motion to the cervical joints and massage to help relax the surrounding musculature. A home exercise programme to stretch and strengthen the muscles will be given. It may be worth looking at your desk layout to ensure your posture is not affecting your joints. Finally, stress can be a big factor associated with headaches so this also needs to be identified and addressed as part of the rehabilitation programme. To book an assessment contact our experienced team of Chartered Physiotherapists:

EXHIBITION & SALE OF ART

Mentmore Arts Festival 2018 The 2018 Mentmore Arts Festival will be held from Saturday 26th to Monday 28th May from 11am - 5pm. We are delighted that this year will be our momentous 10th festival. We will be welcoming over 60 artists including painters, photographers, jewellers and ceramicists. Firm favourites will be exhibiting along with new contributors. Last year we donated £ 5,000 to Thames Valley Air Ambulance and £ 2,500 each to Young Carers Bucks and St Mary’s Church in Mentmore. This brought the grand total monies raised, since the Arts Festival began, to over £60,000. This year we will be supporting National Autistic Society, Lindengate - a charity improving health and well being through nature and horticulture and See Ability - a charity that enriches the lives of people with sight loss and multiple disabilities across the UK. The festival makes a fabulous family day out with lunches, teas, coffees and a bar all available in the Village Hall Garden. We have so much support every year from so many people and the committee would like to thank everyone for all their help once again. Have a look at our website … www.mentmore-arts-festival.co.uk … and do come and join us in May.

Ridings Cottage, Ridings Way Dear villagers As you are all aware Valerie Osborn sadly passed away last year. Unfortunately, the future of her house, Ridings Cottage is now uncertain as the owners may wish to demolish it. Myself, Hugh Vale and Alan Yates tried to put together a case for getting the Cottage added to the listed register with Historic England. Disappointingly we were unsuccessful as it was deemed that the building was not architecturally significant enough. We are looking to appeal this decision and also investigate other avenues to preserve such a characterful building. If any one in the village has any expertise or knows anyone who has relating to preserving historic buildings we would be thrilled to hear from you.

Watch Out Thieves About News reaches us that a van was broken into on a drive in Silver Street and all tools were stolen... apparently they returned a few days later to try again for the replacements... If you see any strange cars in the village late at night, please take their numbers down.

NEXT PARISH COUNCIL MEETING & AGM

Notes from a small (Cublington) Parish Council It feels appropriate that roads and traffic once again forms the centre of these notes. Did you know there were at least 1.5m potholes on British roads last year, according to the Asphalt Industry Alliance (AIA), a group representing roadbuilders and asphalt producers. That was up from 1m the previous year. Now, after our worst winter weather in decades, the number could well be in excess of 2m nationwide. Potholes are caused when water penetrates tiny cracks in the road – cracks that are usually caused by traffic. When this water freezes, it expands, widening the cracks. When it melts, traffic thumps down on the space vacated by the ice and smashes new craters into the road surface. Our friends at Vass-Tech Garage in Whitchurch see at least 4 damaged vehicles each week as a consequence of pot hole damage, mostly wheels but also driving screen damage when drivers speed through a pothole releasing golf ball size lumps of asphalt to project into the following cars. The damage to cyclists is more concerning and deadly with some 50 cyclists killed or seriously injured each year on British roads. Every Cublington resident can report a pothole and the Parish Council urge you to follow the link below and do so. It might save a life! http://www.transportforbucks.net/Report-It-Pothole.aspx

Still on roads, some 20 years ago the Cublington Parish Council opened village consultation on positioning a

roundabout system at the crossroads. Bucks County Council Highways at the time approved the plans that were commissioned by the Parish Council. But there was an under whelming response from residents to the plan back in 2000 and the Parish Council were obliged to cease the proposal. I suspect there maybe a different response now? As you can see from the Minutes of the last Parish Council meeting, we have secured a 50% grant from the Local Area Forum (local Parish Councils who have a very small budget for their member village projects which includes Cublington, of course), to initiate a new Feasibility Study on building a roundabout system at the Cublington crossroads. The old plans will be dusted down - and Transport for Buckinghamshire (TfB) will conduct the study. This will cost the Parish, but we feel we would be lacking in "duty of care" if we did not at least obtain a clear outcome from doing this study. When we have progressed this and assuming that a crossroads is still feasible, there will be a required public consultation exercise for Cublington residents. One fact will be changed from 2000 - the cost! Such a project will not be trivial in cash terms and it will be then that the residents of Cublington will have to determine the priority of affecting a solution that will measurably reduce speed through the village. More on this as we proceed. Cllr Michael Reilly Cublington Parish Council
