Welcome to the start of a brand New Year filled with new goals, new roles and endless possibilities. We hope that everyone enjoyed their time over the holidays and had a taste of our delicious Caribbean Passion Christmas Ham and other yummy CB Products. As we embark on a New year, we want to remind each of you, our team members, that you are a part of the CB Group family, and share a common goal of providing SAFE food for all Jamaicans. Here’s a quick update on the performance of some of our brands for the latter part of 2013. On the CB Chicken side, acceptance of our poultry products has never been higher. They have become the new family favourite for quality and taste having been assured of the safe and great nutritional values assigned to them. The feedback on the quality of our Caribbean Passion Christmas Ham indicates that it the holiday Ham of choice because of its ready-to-eat convenience and built in succulence. The consistently high quality engrained in our Nutramix feeds has made them the farmers’ choice both in Jamaica and abroad; while our ‘Front Runner’ horse feed is the new trainer’s choice for their champion breed. This has made us confident that the innovations and plans for future development will be in great hands with our team having demonstrated what the power of teamwork and dedication can achieve. We anticipate a year of growth, new developments and exciting changes and with your continued support, we are confident that this will be a very dynamic year for us and our brands. Our best wishes extend beyond the gates of our physical space to your families and friends within our respective communities. Meet Craig, He’s Our PORK Guy! Since landing his dream job as the Sales Manager for Pork & Eggs at CB Foods, Craig Plunkett has quickly become Copperwood’s secret weapon. Never one to steer from a challenge, over the last five months, Craig has been leading the charge to increase our market share by over 30% in his first year! So how will he achieve this goal? The proud UTECH alum and lecturer says that “dispelling the misconceptions about pork products and getting consumers to realize that pork is a very healthy and versatile meat that can be prepared and enjoyed in various ways” will be his main task. And how does he plan to lead the way? Craig’s unique “democratic” management style, promotes both personal and professional development of his team and he aims to keep everyone fully motivated to work together to achieve the goals. But what are the goals? Copperwood Pork - available at supermarkets, wholesales, restaurants and hotels all over Jamaica! What he thinks of the CB Group so far? My experience since August has been most intriguing. CB is a learning organization where innovation and creativity is valued throughout the company so each day I learn something “new.” And what does he do when he’s not planning to take over the pork market? The Liverpool fan always looks forward to relaxing with his favourite dish- none other than pork spare ribs, or spending time with his wife Natalee and their two children, Zuri and Zahir-Amiri.

Eat Smart

Smart Eggs has been working on expanding their recipe bank and worked with Chef Jacqui Sinclair on developing some egg-cellent dishes. Here’s one of our recipes from the recipe booklet that will be distributed to our customers in the upcoming months.Salmon Frittatas, Chocolate Chip Pancakes and Eggs Benedict.

Get Crackin’ in 2014 This Facebook initiative aims to encourage our followers to make meaningful changes in the New Year. Hubert Blair

E X PO RT S A L E S MA N A G E R Hubert “Tony” Blair has been an instrumental member of the CBG family for 14 years. He has always made a positive impression on the company amidst every challenge faced, and every position he has filled. And now in his new role as Export Sales Manager, Tony is pressed to grow the Export arm of the company, and implement exciting and new sales strategies as we expand our Safe Food movement throughout the region. This is a glimpse into Tony’s journey at the CB Group, which has led him to where he is today. Tell us about your journey through the company to eventually becoming Export Sales Manager. Recruited by Caribbean Broilers in August 2000 as a Field Service Man, I worked with the Company for five years before relocating to Canada, then Trinidad. As fate would have it, CBG came knocking again in 2011 about several opportunities. Initially I was reluctant, but I didn’t dismiss the idea entirely. After much consideration, I made the bold move to return home to my ailing mother and the best company I’ve ever worked for, CBG. I began work with a new title, Field Auditor, and was then promoted to Technical Sales Supervisor 2 ½ years later. Fast forward 1 ½ years later, and now I wear the hat of Export Sales Manager. That is quite the journey! Have you always been involved in sales? (Smiles) … My first degree is in Agriculture so I didn’t have much experience in sales per se, but I just have a knack for it.

Walk us through a day in the life of the CBG Export Sales Manager. My day begins at 8am sharp. I review my schedule, check emails for any urgent field requests, customer concerns or queries, and liaise with the Accounts department to make sure everyone gets paid. A major part of my role is market research, to find new opportunities and to of course, keep our existing customers happy. Once a potential customer is identified, I travel to meet these individuals. Face to face interaction is imperative to close the deal in sales. What kind of obstacles have you experienced in export sales. With export sales, you have to be very meticulous. One bad or delayed decision could inflate costs and compromise the profit of the sale. Plus there is increased pressure in ensuring the client receives the right product at the right standard in the right time. What does CBG export and which region do we export to? We currently export feed, chicken, chicken based products, pork and pork based products to the Caribbean. We are also looking at exporting live animals and semen to better the livestock pool outside of Jamaica.

Are there plans to export to other regions? Right now the Caribbean region is our major market, but wherever there is an emerging market, we are open to the possibility, as long as the opportunity is right for us. What CBG product has the highest demand regionally? Based on our international quality certification: ISO, HACCP and GMP, our feed is in high demand. I believe Nutramix has the best feed mill in the entire region and the growth we have seen in the export market speaks to the quality we produce. Have you noticed an increased demand for a particular CBG product in the export market? Our Nutramix feed is our strongest export product and the demand continues to grow, but interestingly we are also now seeing an increasing demand for livestock. How would you describe CBG’s current export sales position in the market? We are in a strong position to properly service the export market because of our great team. Plus, with our international standards and certification we minimize the possibility of falling short on safety or quality, which is important to the customer. How do you handle the pressure associated with this job? Especially when it comes on to dealing with disgruntled customers. I live by the motto “The client is always right”, so I always strive to do whatever I can to ensure we provide the best possible service at all times. Every job has its challenges and pressure, but when the tough days come, you just have to put your back against the wall and push! Never say game over until it really is “over”.

CB UWI 5K Run/Walk Raises

$10 MILLION for Student Development UWI student development is set to gain an immense push following the second successful staging of the CB Group UWI 5K Run Walk, held on Sunday November 17. CB Group COO Mathew Lyn presented the cheque valued at $10 Million on Thursday, December 19 to Professor Ishenkumba Kahwa, Deputy Principal, Mona Campus.

CB Group generously offered their support and have committed to doing so for three years from 2012. “CB Group’s involvement is just an example of how corporate Jamaica can offer aid to tertiary education and consequently, national development”, said Mr Lyn. This year’s staging also saw the introduction of a unique feature, as Island Grill stepped up to sponsor a Children’s 2K which was thoroughly enjoyed by the children in attendance and their families. The CB Group UWI 5K with this added element has been touted as a family event and indeed brought out several households with multiple generations participating in the event.

The profits will go toward scholarships for students who demonstrate outstanding ability in sports and academics. The event has now raised $28 Million in two years following the record breaking $18 Million raised from the inaugural staging in 2012. The proceeds from the inaugural staging provided 20 academic and sports scholarships to young men and women in first and second year at the University of The West Indies. This year’s gains will go directly into the continuation of that scholarship fund by increasing the pool of recipients said Elizabeth Buchanan-Hind, Executive Director, Institutional Advancement Division at UWI.

2. How long have you been associated with CB? George: April 2013 Kayon: January 16, 2006 Walter: Two years and eight months Denham: A little over five years Sean: Since 1999 Angello: A little over five years 3. What is the best part about working at CB?

1. Tell us about the recent restructuring of the IT department and what benefits have you seen thus far. George: A division of responsibilities and roles, which means we are more organized and can deliver a better quality of service. Kayon: It will take some time for people to get familiar with the new structure, but it’s better and allows problems to be resolved in a shorter period of time. Walter: Allows persons to focus on specific areas of expertise and concentrate their efforts. Denham: We weren’t really functioning as a true IT department before. Very little forward planning. Now there is actual structure and a sense of direction.

George: Diversity in the group of companies, and there is lots of room for growth and development. Kayon: CB is not afraid to invest in technology and open to change to help grow the company. Love that we have direct access to Management, and the lines of communication are very open. Walter: The family atmosphere and working with my colleagues. Denham: Opportunity for growth personally and professionally. Sean: Family atmosphere, and working colleagues- great corporate culture. Angello: We work as a family at CB and I can gain new experiences as the Company continues to evolve.

4. Describe a typical day from the moment you arrive at work till when you leave. George: Controlled CHAOS. Kayon: There is no typical day in IT, it’s always changing and dynamic. We’re always on the go! Walter: Answering calls, assigning help desk tickets and ensuring that operations are running smoothly, while conducting research on new technologies and innovative products in the market place. Denham: There is no typical day. Just have to be open to a plan and it changing. Flexibility is key. Angello: Always check my email first and try to make a plan for the day from there. Sean: Even before I get into the office I’m at work. From the moment you arrive you just have to hit the ground running. I get calls 24/7. 5. What is the strangest/ most frequently asked IT question that you have received at work? George: Why is ROSS crawling? (laughs) Walter: What’s wrong with my “moose”, aka mouse? They really didn’t know it was pronounced mouse. (laughs) Denham: My password isn’t working. But once I got a call about a roof leak. Angello: “Can IT see what we’re doing on our phone?” (laughs) Sean: Did you see the download? 6. What gets you through a hectic work day? George: Knowing that I’m needed to solve a problem to continue the Company’s work. In my mind I know that I’m needed to help an employee.

8. Complete this sentence, “ I am happiest at work when...” George: … I’m alone in the office after regular work hours. Kayon: I have a lot of work to do! Walter: The users are happy with the service provided by IT. Denham: I am on the last item on my checklist. Angello: When a user has a technical issue and I can help them resolve it. Sean: I’m working. 9. What is the biggest misconception about the IT team? George: That we can fix everything. Kayon: Adding to George, even about the AC or the roof! (laughs) Walter: That we do very little work and don’t care about the users’ issues. Denham: That we do nothing until someone calls with a problem. Angello: That we know everything about technology even iPhones, iPads etc. 10. What is your must-have “techie” item for 2014? George: 60” Samsung LED Smart TV Kayon: Google watch Walter: Lenova Tablet 8 Denham: I want a break from technology Angello: Apple iPhone 5 Sean: Samsung s5

Kayon: I love a rough day, it’s a huge adrenaline rush. I just work assiduously and look forward to enjoying time with my family at home. Walter: Prayer and meditation which helps to create the right work attitude. Upbeat music also helps. Denham: Tea with Shannon, zip in my ears, lunch with Veron and the opportunity to call Kayon (smiles). Angello: Hanging with friends during lunch time. They usually have good jokes to share which make me laugh and forget about the craziness of work. Sean: Sitting in the office with no noise and no Angello (laughs) 7. What is your favourite CB product? George: CB Chicken Kayon: I love all the products! Walter: Caribbean Passion Diced Chicken Ham. Denham: I recently had the baby-back ribs, it sell off! CB Chicken Sweet & Gooey Chicken Wings

The perfect wings for any kind of occasion!

INGREDIENTS (serves 3-4) - 1/2 cup soy sauce - 1/4 cup packed brown sugar - 1/2 tablespoon vegetable oil - 1/2 teaspoon minced fresh ginger root - 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder - 1 1/2 pounds CB Chicken wings

DIRECTIONS In a 9x13 inch casserole, combine soy sauce, brown sugar, oil, ginger, and garlic powder. Mix until brown sugar completely dissolves into the mixture. Place the chicken wings in the dish and turn them over until they are all well coated. Cover the dish and refrigerate for at least 4 hours. Turn the chicken again, after 2 hours. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Bake chicken at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C), covered, for 45 minutes. Turn the chicken wings, and spoon sauce from the bottom of the pan over the tops of the wings. Cook an additional 50 minutes, uncovered.

Caribbean Passion MEAT LOVER’S OMELETTE INGREDIENTS (serves 1) - 2 large eggs lightly beaten - 2 tps chopped green and red peppers - 2 tps tomato chopped - 2 tps onion chopped

This one’s a guaranteed LOVE at first bite!

- 2 tbs Caribbean Passion Diced Italian Sausage - 1 tbs vegetable oil - 2 tbs cheddar cheese shredded - salt and white pepper

METHOD 1. In a non-stick frying pan, add oil and bring to medium heat 2. Add sausages, peppers, onion, and tomato to pan and sauté for approximately 1-2 minutes 3. Reduce heat, then whisk eggs with pinch of salt and pepper 4. Pour egg into pan. Using an egg lifter, lift the edges of eggs towards the middle of pan for even distribution 5. Cook for about 3 minutes, until egg mixture is set or until loose in pan 6. Flip over on the other side and let cook for approximately 1 minute 7. Add cheese, fold in half and serve immediately

This year, instead of creating a new set of goals and resolutions, we encourage you to create a contract with yourself - on the everyday behaviors and perspectives that you can incorporate so that you can be the best version of “you.” 1. Spend less time shopping, more time traveling. Yes, those new shoes have a slightly different heel than the ones already have in your closet, and yes, they are gorgeous. But you’ll forget about those shoes in a month. Invest in experiences, not things. 2. Start honoring your intuition. You know that feeling of resistance and hesitation you’ve ignored all these years? Well, it’s time to start listening. Next time your gut tells you something, don’t make excuses to justify it into silence. Listen. 3. Remember that your parents are aging. And one day it will be too late to call, write and make time for them. As you grow older, you start to realize this isn’t the case. No matter what your relationship is with your parents, you will miss them when they are gone. Make the time now to show that you appreciate them. Learn their stories, ask them new questions and find out as much about their history as possible. “Don’t wait until a crisis to discover what is important in your life.” 4. When you’re feeling impatient, adjust your reaction. Yes you’re busy. But don’t think you’re more important or more entitled that you actually are. Before you roll your eyes because the cashier is being too slow, or silently judge someone’s intelligence because they are taking too long, adjust your reaction and remember, it’s not your place to make someone feel anxiety because they aren’t performing a task at the pace you’d prefer. 5. Each week, do something to show appreciation for someone. Write a card, send flowers “just because,” or pick up the phone and call. Do something random to show someone you love that you appreciate and care about them. 6. Start your morning with “me” time. Before the rush of the workday begins, start your morning off with some “me” time. Fill that time with something that feeds your spirit. Meditate, read, go for a walk. 7. Say a positive affirmation aloud every morning. Seems cheesy. But it works. Every morning, look in the mirror, say a positive affirmation. Start your morning that way and it will affect the attitude you choose for the day.

8. Carve out time every day to feed a passion. Make it a daily habit to carve time out to do something that feeds a passion or builds on your personal development. Write, draw, make something with your hands, dance.... It’s easy to get caught up in the minutia of every day. If you need to, schedule that time in your calendar. 9. Before bed, write or say aloud something you’re grateful for. Gratitude rewires your brain for happiness. Write down something you’re grateful for every night before bed. Make that ritual of gratitude be the last thing you do before you sleep. 10. The person in front of you is more important than your phone. As someone who prides yourself on having good manners, since when did it become normalized to check your phone in the middle of a conversation? The email can wait. Remind yourself that being present is the most authentic way of truly experiencing something. Being a slave to your phone is addictive. Start by small changes. When you’re having a meal with someone, leave your phone off the table so that you’re not tempted to keep checking it. 11.When you’re feeling judgmental, remember, empathy always wins. People are going to frustrate you, hurt you and even enrage you. It’ll be easy to hate or judge these people. But try to think about why that person is behaving that way. Remember that “hurt people, hurt people.” Even the target of your frustration has a history and a story. Ask yourself why the person is affecting you so much as there’s likely something you can learn from the challenging interaction. Lastly, don’t be so hard on yourself. You will slip. Don’t self loathe when you do. Remember to be gentle with yourself. Give yourself permission to be soft, to not know all the answers, to be vulnerable, and most importantly, to be human...
