Getting fit for the new ski season... If you don’t care that it’s too cold to wear flip-flops and can imagine that the rain is fresh snow in higher parts of the mountains, you are probably a big winter sports enthusiast and have already started to pull out your ski equipment. Checking on the condition of your equipment is the first part of the preparation process for the new winter season. You should not consider hitting the slopes until you have prepared your own body.

The importance of preparing for the slopes before you start skiing or riding is paramount. Being in shape will not only reduce the chance of getting hurt, but will also help you to become a better skier. The fitter you get, the easier it is to improve your technique. Being more efficient will enable you to out-ski other skiers, even those younger ones. Remember, it is the engine that counts most.

This will ensure that you have enough stamina to last an entire day on the slopes. Many skiers end up injuring themselves as their muscles become fatigued. Don’t forget that being in good cardio shape means you can hike to untouched powder. What a joy to have a little part of the mountain to yourself.

Building up your ski-specific muscles To help you ski to the best of your ability and for as long as possible, you will need to work on building your ski-specific muscles. Important muscles that need to be in peak condition when you hit the slopes include your quadriceps, calves, and gluts and your body’s core muscles. Improving your balance and flexibility Balance is a fundamental feature inherent in skiing or boarding movements. You are constantly moving in and out of a balanced position as you progress down the slope. Flexibility basically refers to the ability of your muscle-connective tissues to extend without compressing your joints and potentially causing real damage. The tendons and ligaments that surround your joints need to be strong and flexible if you wish to avoid injuries while skiing.

Join us for our Fitness on the Snow program to assure you have developed these three key areas.

NATIVE AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH Short Nights of the Shadow Catcher: the epic life and immortal photographs of Edward Curtis, by Timothy Egan tells the story of Edward Curtis, who in 1900 began his epic quest, backed by Theodore Roosevelt and J.P. Morgan, to capture on film the Native American nation before it disappeared. This is a remarkable biographical story behind Curtis’s struggle to document the stories and rituals of more than eighty tribes. Check out our special display this month of books, films and audio-books .

Caleb’s Crossing, by Geraldine Brooks. Pulitzer Prize winning author Brooks imagines the life of Caleb Cheeshahteaumauk, a Wampanoag Indian from Martha’s Vineyard, who became the first Native American to graduate from Harvard college and did so with honors.
