Still their jigging numbers went up dramatically. What would the top paddlers, the mid-pack paddlers, and the back-of-the-pack paddlers that you know say to that question? How do you wrestle with that question?

rom the high bridge of Route 321, I watched as the favorites Seth and Steve Miller punched their final control and swung around toward the finish. It was nearly an hour and a half after the orienteering start, getting near the expected winning time.

It isn’t every canoe-orienteering event that’s spectator friendly, but this year the entire venue was ringed by roads with great viewing spots. I’d seen action all around the course, watched a kayak roll over and spill its paddler as she tried jumping in from a boulder, saw one well-known competitor running back and forth in a frenzy looking for a trail while his partner waited anxiously around the bend, and saw numerous paddlers going every which way. But now I wanted to be there when the Millers finished and won yet another championship.

So, I jumped in the car and headed back, parking and running downhill to the finish line, just barely in time. But wait, that’s not Seth and Steve pulling their boat onto shore, that’s Lisa Bainey and Randy Bailey, with the Millers behind them still on the water. It’s an upset – Bainey and Bailey have come the other way and won by over a minute! This was the fourth canoe orienteering Nationals in Warren and the third where I was course setter. After three courses on the Allegheny River, it seemed time for something different, a lake perhaps. However, after scanning Google Earth for water bodies, there seemed to be nothing suitable within an hour’s drive. Chapman Lake is way too

The Le Mans start – reminiscent visually of Monty Python’s “100-yards dash for people with no sense of direction” as some competitors chose to head south on foot to Control #10, some headed north on foot to scope out #s 9 & 8, and others ran for their boats to paddle north or south according to the plan they had devised in the one minute they’d had to study their map.

small and the enormous Allegheny Reservoir above the Kinzua Dam looked way too big and would be pretty rough in even a moderate wind. However, careful study over the winter of those satellite images revealed that one small, sheltered bay of the reservoir might actually do. Campgrounds along the shores offered complex, twisting road networks and the bay ended in a small, confusing delta where three streams joined. It would do just fine and so the south end of Kinzua Bay became the appointed venue. I travelled to Warren in May, rented a small motorboat, and explored the bay as I mapped it. I mapped subtle beaches and spots where streams entered. I drew in trails and roads. Then, at home as the summer rolled on, I worried that by Nationals week the reservoir level would fall, that the beaches would be far bigger, and the stream mouths different. Instead, when I arrived in August, thanks to heavy rains in southwestern New York, I was stunned to find the reservoir level was four feet higher than mapped. Those subtle strip beaches were gone and the islands had disappeared underwater. Moreover, the Army Corps of Engineers warned that the water would keep rising overnight, maybe another foot or two. That meant I had to hang the orienteering flags on land, not along the water, and that meant the orienteering would be more technical, more challenging. To compensate, I eliminated the farthest two locations, cutting out about a mile. Considering the 91 minute winning times, it was good I did. Congratulations to Lisa and Randy, new USCA National Canoe Orienteering Champions. Congratulations, too, to all the people who tried orienteering for the first time as well as to those who’ve been loyally coming every year. The favorites, Stephen and Seth Miller, paddling out of the flooded delta after punching the control there, now heading north towards the finish line.

ike the nine USCA Biathlons that preceded this year’s thriller at Betts Park, our 2009 Biathlon was great fun. Thirty-eight competitors ran or paddled (or did both) to the delight of an adoring throng of enthusiastic race fans. Our National Biathlon is a 3k run followed by a 3k paddle with a short sprint portage/drag to the finish line. One reason for the incredible popularity of this event is that anyone can partipipate. If you are not a runner, no worries: we will find someone to handle the run. At Peshtigo in 2010, many of Peshtigo’s high school cross-country runners will be available to help you, if needed. This year’s tenth edition of the the Biathlon offered beautiful silver bowls to the first Iron(solo) male and female finishers, Tom Walton (NH) and Kate Wenrich (PA). Race director Walton was clear in prerace instruction that this USCA unofficial fun event is about participation and finding enjoyment in healthy competition. Clearly, eight year old Lyndsey “Pebbles” Stone (MI) understood the spirit of the event as she crossed the finish with a bright smile, after having run 3k and having assisted her team mates Priscilla Reinertsen (NH) and the venerable ninety year old Phil Cole (NH) with portage duty. As always, the Biathlon was followed by the traditional Phil Soule Soirée, named “party of the week” by Paris Hilton who tried paddling once at girl scout camp. “The Best Week of My Summer” — Jackie Stone’s Time at Nationals

The Best Week of My Summer

My first race was the C2 Women Junior with gether and we raced very well. We also had one of my close friends, Nathalie Hanson. some exciting competition in the beginning We took first place, and I had awhile after of the race against our good friends Lilly that race until my next one, so I was able Manns and Devann Benson. They gave up a solid 2nd place at the time, and finished third.” 4) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . submitted unsigned “Linda Charles lost 5 to 10 minutes or more because she chose to stay with another kayaker (Jeff Sosa, boat QQ6) throughout the race. He overturned several times during the race and she stayed with him to make sure he would make it through the race OK. I feel she deserves this award because she put her race second to helping out a fellow competitor. “I also think she deserves this award because it doesn’t matter if she’s first or last, you never see her without a smile. She doesn’t ever let her competitiveness get in the way having fun. In my opinion that’s a pretty good quality to have.” The selection committee had a hard time with this one, but in the end chose Linda Charles. Linda and the other nominees are wonderful examples – to us all – not only of good sporting behavior, but of camaraderie and having a healthy perspective on competition. Thank you – all.

pon arriving home after the 2008 USCA Nationals, I unloaded the truck and one well-packed item: the monumental Paddler of the Year traveling trophy. Prior to that, I hadn’t had much time to appreciate or, for that matter, to look it over. Now I had time and, when I began to examine it, I was more than a little bit overwhelmed and humbled by the names/individuals and couples of the prior honorees. To say the very least, these folks are and were the icons of our sport. Not all were paddlers or great paddlers (some were) but for the most part they were people who knew and loved the sport of canoeing, not just racing. They were people who made colossal contributions to the growth and success of the United States Canoe Association. They are/ were canoe design builders. They were folks who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to keep the USCA a vibrant organization on the right track. They included people who paddled thousand of miles, some of whom won a pile of USCA medals in the process. Others played a vital role in keeping us a 5 star organization thereby protecting our 501(c)3 status. One individual, who has done wonders with the physically handicapped, was honored twice. The list has included people that knew and loved canoeing and, for the most part, the USCA. After looking over the past recipients, it struck me that one name/person who had essentially done so much and served so long was never honored. How could this happen? The guy has been with the organization almost from its inception, served as Vice President, President, Executive Director, filled in as assistant to the “temporary” Treasurer, Race Organizer, meeting planner, etc, etc, and also competes at a very high level given his “advanced years”. John Edwards it seemed to me was LONG overdue for this honor and given the enthusiasm of those who signed on for submitting his name, I feel many others agreed. John, for all you have done for the USCA and for all we hope you will continue to do, we salute you. Congratulations on a long overdue honor. We wish you many enjoyable paddling days in the years to come. For my part, I just enjoy hearing you sing the National Anthem!

Over the Gunwales – USCA President’s Message

. . . . . . . . Janet Perry, President, USCA went. I raced. I lost. And, I’ve got the medals to prove it.

That pretty much describes every Nationals I’ve been to in the last seven years. (I’ve been to many more Nationals than that, for the record.) “I went. I raced. I lost,” are the positive part of that description. The “And, I’ve got the medals to prove it,” is not the positive part of that description. Going to Nationals is mostly fun. There are many friends to catch up with off the water even if I never stick with them on the water. There are usually dinner partners whose names I know but whose fascinating histories I’ve never heard — Phil Cole filled that role, this year. He told me his philosophy of coaching cross-country skiiers for over 30 years, he told me something about his lineage (he’s related to the painter who founded the Hudson River School of landscape painting — just Google it, you’ll see...), and he told me the best thing any competitor can do is to teach your competition to be at least as good as you are, so that you always have people to race with. Don’t worry too much about equipment; worry more about being as fine as your fellows on the field of sport as you can. Like other fine athletes I’ve known, he believes in teaching others what you learn, to make them as successful as you can be. Build a community of good athletes, and you’ll always be surrounded by real friends. At Nationals there’s always something new to try. I chose to afflict Aims Coney, the Orienteering Competition Chair, with my participation at his race. You know what? Photographs don’t do Aims any justice at all — the only portrait of Aims that could capture that merry, tolerant twinkle in his eye, would be a painting by a really good artist. You know what else? There were some really good paddlers at that event! Aims will read that sentence with frustration

and resignation, but I’ve been told for years we should take orienteering off the schedule. I’ve argued against it, even arguing against Aims himself telling us that USCA is not interested in a competitive orienteering event at Nationals. I’d never participated in canoe orienteering, nor have I ever registered at the Nationals version of it. I’d heard, from fine paddlers, that it’s a blast. I’d read Aims’ wonderful reports in Canoe News, and it sounded like he knew how to do it, so I figured I might have fun. It never occurred to me, with all that quality there, that I would win a medal. Good grief. I shouldn’t have done. I missed two controls, mis-punched two controls, followed someone to find two controls, and didn’t exactly worry about the compass too much — even though I did have a compass so that I’d look like one of the “the real ones”. But I finished in time. I was as muddy and wet as everyone else. And I think I had as much fun, too. Aims congratulated me with just as much enthusiasm as he did anyone else, and I’m in the picture of the people who participated. I think Aims is the one who deserved a medal — for putting up with my questions! Because there have been a LOT of questions! I’ve learned a lot from Aims over the last two years! He wouldn’t accept my effort to award him my medal though, no matter how hard I tried to press it on him! “Think of it as inspiration,” he advised — his mouth holding that wry little grin that says he could say more but won’t. I started to ask anyway, but he was off to fix something with the computer results before I could nail him. Story of my life. Well, getting a championship medal on Wednesday morning wasn’t embarrassing enough for someone who’d had only about 1 - 2 hours on the water per week since spring. So, on that same Wednesday, I failed again, with determination and grit, and won a medal at Tom Walton’s Biathlon. Sure, I was ahead of some kayakers because in a canoe I could run the bank a lot closer than they could. Yes, I wasn’t dead last on the run. I definitely ran the portage hard enough to nearly black out

at the finish. But the quality of competitors around me was way higher than my talents, and greater in number than at Orienteering! The only thing I did differently than all the other women in my age division was to go solo! I kinda think I got a medal for not being able to get a partner in time for the race. So, a champion again! At least, though, this was a “fun, unofficial” race, and so I was a “fun, unofficial” champion! When I mentioned my misgivings to Tom, he told me, “Everyone should get a medal for doing what they didn’t think they could do. Or for what other people don’t expect them to do. We get medals for being courageous, Janet,” he paused, then grinned, “And, it’s your ticket to the post-race soirée — so don’t scoff at it!” Sadly, I couldn’t make the post-race soirée. I needed to call my Mom. It proved to be auspicious, though I didn’t know it at the time. She asked me, did I win that day? “Nope,” I told her, but my reply was out of tune with the noise from my companions in the hotel room, who denied that I had lost! “You sound a bit too happy about losing, and Tave makes it sound like you won,” she noted. “Well, I got medals,” I admitted, “but I didn’t win.” I explained how I finished near last everywhere but that I’d had a really great day, and summed it up with, “It’s the USCA way.” Several people in our room groaned. Mom laughed for the first time in a long time. “That’s confusing....” she paused, “Can’t you change it?” “Lots of people have to agree,” I told her, “I can’t do it by myself.” She said, “You need more allies, and less alloy?” Yup. And, there’s lots of listening to be done — on all sides of the issue — before we win the argument that it’s OK to fail — that being allowed to enjoy racing and losing at Nationals (unalloyed by any medal) is in itself worth while. Advice from the Vice

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Ken Gerg, VP, USCA I just spent the weekend of 9/11 through 9/13 doing my 22nd Adirondack 90 Mile Canoe Classic. It has always been a challenging adventure and this year was no exception. My partners were daughter Colleen and husband and wife Toni and Randy Flament. We didn’t win but finished a respectable 6th; blame it on my age. I can still paddle, but the portages, especially Raquette Falls, are getting to be a real challenge. When I first did this event in 1987, I thought they had too many classes. It seemed there was a class for anything that could be paddled or considered a boat/canoe/kayak/dugout, etc, that would float.

Advice from the Vice

As the years have gone by, I have a new perspective. At last count I think there currently are some 16 classes (including guide boats, war and voyageur canoes). The largest class is Open Touring. There are NO 1st, 2nd or 3rd place awards given in this class. Essentially, you are in this class to participate and hopefully you will finish. Times are kept and cut off points are enforced. Having also just been involved in our USCA Nationals I thought a little comparison might be interesting. Would you be shocked to know that USCA has some 90 classes? Talk about TOO MANY CLASSES! We have classes, especially in the kayak area, where we had NO participants (approximately 10 classes, maybe more) and many (maybe another 10) where we had ONE. I would ask, “How can that be a NATIONAL championship”? My “Advice from the Vice” at this time is that we take a long hard look at the

classes and let’s “restart” enforcing the 7-boat rule to drop classes – take it down to 5 boats, but ONE is just ridiculous. If we keep expanding our classes, perhaps we could just do away with our little Nationals “get together” and just mail each and every USCA member a medal. If they want more than one, charge $5 or so per extra – or maybe $15 for gold, $10 for silver and $5 for bronze. There should be seven (7) NATIONAL Championship races – C1 Woman, C1 Man, C2 Women, C2 Men, C2 Mixed, K1 Woman and K1 Man. All others should be USCA Class Champions – not USCA National Champions. I know that some reading this opinion will have a lower heating bill this winter as I am sure it will make them “hot under the collar”! However, I suspect that many others will agree with me.
