European and Jlmerican Paintings in the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum by Philip Hendy This second catalogue of all the exhibited European and American paintings in the Gardner Museum continues the tradition of scholarship, generously framed with personal insights, which was established by Sir Philip Hendy in the first catalogue printed in 1931. A new format allows for a longer text, an illustration of each of the
282
paintings in the collection, and
38 color plates. Sir Philip writes in his
preface: Between the two catalogues of paintings more than four decades have intervened, and in these perhaps as much has been written about the history of art as in the four centuries preceding. Research has re-assembled the oeuvre of many artists wh路ose very names had in some cases been forgotten and has defined and dated more clearly that of those who have always remained known. The arrangement is alphabetical by artist or by school. A biography of each artist precedes a discussion of the painting ; provenance, condition and description are included with scholarly opinions, other versions and a selected bibliography. A list of painters in chronological order and one of dealers and former owners as well as a full index are found at the end.
