Enrollment: Approximately 300 students enrolled in all nursing programs. President: Dr. Frank Bonner (July 1, 2005 – present). History Highlights: In 1982 a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) completion program was added to the programs to allow ADN students to achieve their Baccalaureate Degree in two years. This program was offered at two sites, the Boiling Springs Campus and the Statesville campus. In 1991, the BSN completion program became the Davis Nursing Program and outreach centers offered nursing courses in several counties. The School of Nursing was formally established at Gardner-Webb University in 1995. The Master of Science in Nursing Program (MSN) was established in 2000. Nursing education at Gardner-Webb University has maintained full approval from the North Carolina Board of Nursing since its inception. The program received initial accreditation from the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) in 1970 and has been continuously accredited since that time. Faith

Overview Gardner-Webb University offers numerous opportunities for the Registered Nurse (RN) to complete their advanced nursing degree. The Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) and Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) programs allow working RN’s the ability to attend class on their own time. The online courses are faculty supported and user-friendly, allowing students the flexibility and opportunity to continue on with life and move ahead in their nursing careers. Davis Nursing Program offers the RN to BSN completion program and is offered both face-to-face and through distance learning. The MSN Program offers the working professional the opportunity to complete a graduate degree utilizing distance learning or through a combination of distance learning and face-to-face program delivery. The GWU School of Nursing also offers two professional specialties, nursing administration and nursing education. A PostMaster’s Certificate in Nursing Administration and Nursing Education are also available through distance learning.

The GWU School of Nursing maintains continuous national accreditation through the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission, Inc. for all nursing programs. Our alumni serve as Chief Nursing Officers, Nurse Managers, Nurse Educators, Executive Directors, Clinical Leaders, Clinical Supervisors, and Bedside Nurses.
Employment Outlook Philosophy The faculty of the School of Nursing functions within the framework of the purposes and value statements of Gardner-Webb University, which focuses on providing high quality education within a Christian, private, liberal arts setting. The School of Nursing philosophy represents a framework of overarching beliefs of the nursing faculty that lays the foundation for individual program philosophy, goals and organizing concepts.
According to the U.S. Department of Labor, “Employment of registered nurses is expected to grow 23 percent from 2006 to 2016, much faster than the average for all occupations.” Generally, RNs with at least a bachelor’s degree will have better job prospects than those without a bachelor’s.

SCHOOL OF NURSING|DEGREE PROGRAMS Bachelor of Science in Nursing|BSN The Davis Nursing Program at GWU offers a course of study designed for registered nurses that leads to a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree. The program of study is offered in a combination of distance learning and face-to-face delivery. Options for completion include an accelerated one-year program through distance learning or a two-year completion including face-to-face courses on the main campus. Students also have the option of an RN to MSN program of study. Two graduate level courses can be taken to satisfy BSN requirements, which allows the student to earn six hours of credit toward the MSN Degree. Purpose The Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program is designed to prepare the registered nurse for professional practice in a variety of healthcare settings. Providing patient-centered care through the integration of evidence-based practice is a primary goal of the Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program. The graduate of the BSN program will: Provide evidence-based care to individuals, families, and populations in a variety of settings. Establish partnerships with clients and health care professionals to meet health needs of clients in a diverse society. Incorporate professional values and ethical, moral, and legal aspects of health care into nursing practice. Employ leadership/management/administrative skills and a knowledge of the political system in providing direct and indirect care to clients. Assume personal responsibility and accountability for professional nursing practice. Assume responsibility for life-long learning and professional career development.

The Gardner-Webb University School of Nursing is privileged to have an approved Chapter-At-Large, Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI) Honor Society of Nursing with Queens University of Charlotte. STTI is the only nursing honor society dedicated to improving the health of the world’s people, thus the name Sigma Theta Tau International. Baccalaureate and graduate nursing students meeting the eligibility criteria for membership, having endorsement for membership, and approval for membership by Mu Psi Board of Directors, and/or members of Mu Psi are invited for membership and to an induction ceremony.

BSN| Criteria for Admission In order to enroll students from a variety of backgrounds with the greatest potential for successfully completing the program, the following criteria for acceptance will be used: Associate Degree in Nursing or a Diploma in Nursing Cumulative GPA of 2.5. Current unrestricted RN licensure. Satisfactory criminal background check and drug screen. Immunizations
as required by the University and the School of Nursing.
Master of Science in Nursing|MSN The Master of Science in Nursing Program at Gardner-Webb University offers programs of study designed to meet the needs of nurses seeking expanded roles in the nursing profession. The MSN Programs requires 30 to 36 semester hours of graduate studies. In addition to the MSN Degree, students have the choose of obtaining a dual degree the, MSN/MBA. Students may choice specialty practice areas in the MSN Program including Nursing Administration and Nursing Education. The Nursing Administration specialty is offered in collaboration with the Graduate School of Business and seeks to prepare the professional nurse for leadership roles in healthcare organizations. The Nursing Education specialty is designed to prepare students to become professional educators in an academic or healthcare setting. This program of study allows students the opportunity to enhance their clinical expertise from a theoretical perspective and to apply nursing education and learning principles in practice settings. The MSN/MBA dual degree is a 63 semester hour program and is designed to be an interdisciplinary program combining nursing leadership with a working knowledge of business and managerial skills. Post Master’s Certificates are available in both Nursing Administration and Nursing Education to the master’s prepared nurse. These certificates are designed to prepare nurse educators and nursing administrators in both the academic and clinical settings. The MSN Program provides nurses with an opportunity to:

Many companies and foundations offer assistance to students based on various qualifications. Students should investigate policies of their employers as well as with local civic organizations to determine the availability of such funds.
Military/Veteran’s Benefit The veteran’s benefit is awarded to eligible personnel. A DD-214 and a VA Application for Education Benefits must be submitted to the University’s VA Coordinator.

BSN Davis Foundation Scholarships
Nurses employed in and are a resident of Iredell, Alexander or Wilkes counties may apply for the Davis Foundation Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded in the amount of $150-$200 per semester hour, based on grade point average. Students must be enrolled in at least 6 semester hours.
