along ORR as it took them three-anda-hours from HSR to reach ITPL today. "Many of them had to apply half day leave as well," says resident Akanksha. Things stabilised after the bus was towed away eventually. We feel that helicopters should be deployed to ease congestions of this nature as it's difficult for the towing vehicle to make way through already-clogged roads to reach the spot. A helicopter could make things happen in a jiffy. A costly proposition, but not at all costly when you look at the number of productive hours that the vehicle users lost due to this jam. Not to mention, the savings on fuel costs and travel time.

n October 3, a school bus went 'off road' due to a "centre bolt cut" at Kadubeesanahalli Service Road near Old Airport Road at around 8m. By 'off road', the traffic police meant that the vehicle had seized to function and needed to be towed away to make way for traffic. This has resulted in a traffic pile-up right up to Electronic City for the next four hours, according to HSR traffic police. A crane was supposed to come and pick up the bus, but it had still not happened, which had resulted in the pile-up, according to police sources. This trickle down effect also affected the residents going to Whitefield or

2 HSR cops catch robbers within 4 days! Gandhinagar corporator visits HSR Layout to know about its best practices Oct 05 - Oct 11, 2018

O

n September 18, 2018, at around 11.20pm, two people on a bike robbed petrol bunk owner Satyanarayana on 24th Main, 15th B Cross, Sector 1. According to HSR police, the robbers pushed him away, and snatched his bag from the car containing Rs 5.71 lakh in cash and other important documents. Within four days after the case was filed at the HSR police station, inspector DR Nagaraj's team (now the inspector is transferred and the new inspector is yet to be appointed) has impressed everyone with their swift action by apprehending the alleged robbers. The finger of suspicion rested on the petrol bunk owner's 32year-old driver P Dinesh, a native of Mysore. When the cops interrogated him, the truth was out and he admitted to the crime, according to the cops. Dinesh has allegedly said that he brought his accomplices KC Sachin (26 years) and Shreyas (22 years) from Mysore to commit the robbery. The cops have seized Rs 3.1 lakh cash, three mobile phones, one watch and one Bajaj Pulsar bike (KA55-X7888).

The cops involved in this investigation who need to be lauded for their good work include Sub Inspectors Paul Priyakumar and GK Ravi; Assistant Sub Inspector Shivanna, and Head Constables Nagabhushan Gowda, Mallappa Valaki, and constables Umesh, Lakshman Pawar, Bojhraj and Shivanand. We congratulate all the cops for acting swiftly on the case.

HSR and Teacher's Colony residents rejoice They get new LED lights and automatic sensors

T

he residents of Jakkasandra ward 173, including re s i d e nt s of Te a ch e r ' s Colony, HSR Layout Sector 5 and Sector 6, can expect their streets to be better lit in the coming days. Last week, MLA Ramalinga Reddy and corporator Saraswathamma attended a pooja programme to provide 65 LED lights for the entire ward. And these also include automatic sensor switches that will

automatically turn on during sundown, saving precious electricity. Many might not know this but the Jakkasandra ward includes areas of Sector 6 (the area behind the Silk Board bus stand right up to Teacher's Colony) and Sector 5 (the area between Teacher's Colony and 14th Main Road near Greenvie w Hospital). "Our area got about four automatic sensors," says Mohan Govindiah,

secretary, Namma Teacher's Colony Residents Welfare Association. "The LED street light fittings and control switches in Jakkasandra Ward are being given under the MLA Special Grants scheme, and are worth Rs 25 lakh." The pooja was held at 10am on September 29 at the BBMP Park in Sector 5, near Arogya Ahaara restaurant.

L

ast week, the volunteers of HSR Citizen Forum were happy to take RS Satyanarayana (corporator, Dattatreya Temple Ward 77 that includes areas like Gandhinagar, Malleswaram and Seshadripuram) on a tour of HSR Layout to showcase their best practices. The following areas were covered during the visit: ..................................................................................... Continued on page 3

3 Drug peddlers nabbed in HSR Layout Oct 05 - Oct 11, 2018

Bommanahalli MLA inaugurates a Plog Run

O

n October 1, between 7pm and 1145pm, the city crime branch officials arrested two drug peddlers in Sector 2 while two are still absconding. The two accused are Balagopal (27 years), a resident of KK Residency, Sector 2 and Sanoj (28 years), a resident of Harlur. The other two accused who are still at large are Sejay (30) and Saiju (age not given). While Sejay is a resident of TC Palya, Saiju belongs to Kerala, according to the police. Under the leadership of VD Shivaraju, the CCB police pounced into action when they received information on October 1 at around 2.30pm that the accused were selling drugs on the

footpath of 24th Main near Udupi Palace restaurant, and making illicit money by going around in their Honda Activa. Some of the drugs seized during their late night operation include four grams of MDMA, 24 grams of Ecstasy tablets, and five kilos of Cannabis (Ganja). Three mobile phones and one Honda Activa was also seized. The drugs are valued at around Rs 4 lakh. This is the second such arrest in the space of two months. On August 19, one person was nabbed with drugs worth Rs 3 lakh. He was growing cannabis in a pot at his rented flat in HSR Layout.

n what is a citywide Plog Run campaign today where people jog and also pick up garbage, HSR Layout also took part with great gusto. Bommanahalli MLA Satish Reddy also took part and gave a pithy speech and inaugurated this cleanliness campaign on Gandhi Jayanthi day. "In HSR, you don't get as much plastic, so lets see how many we find," he said and began the run on a humourous note. More than 100 citizens turned up for the event that showed that people care about their neighbourhood and are ready to say 'no' to plastic.

"They were much impressed with the practices followed and the results we got," said HSR resident and volunteer Chitra Praneeth. "They appreciated the untiring efforts of HSR Citizen Forum, the BBMP supervisors, contractor and Pourakarmikas (sweepers) in ensuring the smooth management of solid waste."

he problem of illegally parking trucks along 5th Main in Sector 7 continues unabated despite complaints from residents for the last several months. The menace is particularly critical near 24th Cross, according to residents. "The trucks are parked near three vacant sites, adjacent to Imperial Solitaire apartments," says resident

Ratnakar B. "Huge garbage dumping is happening on the footpath in the cover of trucks at night and in the early morning." T he re s i d e nt s c ompl ai n t hat pedestrians are forced to walk in the centre of the heavy traffic, fraught with danger. "Many accidents have happened in the past," says Ratnakar. "The dumped garbage emits foul smell and is unbearable for residents.

Although the BBMP contractor is clearing the garbage regularly, the stench is not coming down." The residents have complained to not only the BBMP, but also the traffic police and MLA Satish Reddy about this, but no concrete action has been taken so far. What is making the matters worse is that the trucks are owned by operators having offices close by.

P

logging is Swedish for picking plastic while walking or jogging. It's a new fitness trend that has cleanliness at its very heart. And that's precisely what HSR residents have adopted of late. Besides the Plog Run at BDA Complex on October 2, there was another round of plogging at Mangammana Palya Lake premises near Hosapalya in ITI Layout. ..........................................................................................................................................................................

The residents teamed up with the BBMP and cle ane d up t heir surroundings. Importantly, they held a handheld loudspeaker and went from house to house around the lake to spread the concept of cleanliness and hygiene. "We did a garbage segregation awareness campaign along with plogging," says resident Lalithamba BV. "The waste pick up started in the areas close to the lake at

7.30am. Basha and the pourakarmikas (sweepers of BBMP) were of great help and highly appreciated." But all is not hunky dory here. Says l a ke a c t iv ist Kav it ha R e d dy : "Mangammana Palya Lake is in a bad shape, even though BBMP spent a lot of money to revive it due to lack of political will. Full fencing, gate, proper timings and a lake keeper is all that is needed to keep the lake clean!"

Garbage set on fire in Teacher's Colony

G

arbage was set on fire by miscreants on October 2 in Teacher's Colony, next to HSR Layout Sector 5. "This black spot was zeroed in by volunteers who are doing night patrolling for the last four months," says civic activist Mohan Govindiah. "Due to lorry unloading issues, the garbage was dumped here and now, this fire. Along with Silk Board pollution, we now have to take this smoke." This place also happens to be the secondary waste collection point for the BBMP. On October 3, more garbage was dumped for collection. "The BBMP engineer visited the spot and we have clearly told them that if burning incidents continue, they will have to remove this point and dump their garbage elsewhere," said Mohan.

Dowry harassment: Sector 3 woman complains against husband & mother-in-law

A

resident of Sector 3 has filed a dowry harassment case against her husband for allegedly beating her up and trying to forcibly take away her jewellery to fund his new business, just a year after marriage. She has also named her mother in law as co-accused for pestering her to part with cash and jewellery in the form of dowry. Thirty-one-year-old Reema Menon filed the case last night at the HSR police station against her husband Ayyappadas Chandrashekhar, a native of Kochi and his mother Sreedevi KS.

In her FIR (First Information Report) to the police given last night, Reema has stated that she married Chandrashekhar on May 12, 2017 in front of elders as per the Hindu norms. However, within a few months after the marriage, Chandrashekhar claimed that he had decided to do business and had taken a loan of Rs 15 lakh. He asked her to get her parents to pay him the money. When she said that her parents had no money, he asked her to give him her jewellery instead. When she refused to part with it, he asked her to divorce him and get out of the house. When she called up her mother in law and apprised her of the situation, even she asked her to give away the jewellery to her son. The matter reached a head on June 22, 2018 when her husband allegedly hit her with his hands and even threatened her by strangling her neck and asking her to give him cash and jewellery as dowry. Even her mother in law continued to pester her to give him the jewellery as dowry. The cops have filed a case under the Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961, and are investigating.

Resident is looking for her missing dog, please help!

H

SR resident Tejashwini Lokesh is looking for her dog Lucky. According to her, he is missing since the morning of September 28 in HSR Layout. She's uploading his news and visuals on social media and asking anyone who finds him to bring it back to

her. If you think you have it with you, call her at 080 25726188 or 86600-97665. "He wears a blue belt in his neck and a red rakhi is tied to his neck," she says. There's another dog that one HSR resident had found the other day, but that is not her dog, she confirmed.

The Musical Donkey A washer man had a donkey named Udhata. The donkey carried loads during the day and was set free to graze in the nearby fields at night. He met a jackal one night and together, they would get food from nearby farms while the farmers slept. While Udhata enjoyed vegetables, the jackal attacked the farmer’s poultry. One night, Udhata was in a gay mood and told the jackal that he wanted to sing. The jackal warned him that singing while stealing vegetables from a farm is not a good idea. The donkey ignored the warning and sang to its heart’s content, even as the jackal ran to save its life. Soon, farmers woke up hearing the donkey braying and beat it with sticks for eating the vegetables from their farms. Moral: There is a right time and place to do anything.

Anti-plastic raids continue in Bommanahalli

O

n Friday, September 28, Health inspector Vinodh GM raided four shops on 22nd Cross in Sector 3 and collected Rs 20,000 as penalty from them. "These were new shops that have come up near New Delicacy... two eateries and two shops," he told Residents Watch. "The

anti-plastic raids will continue." Two plastic wholesalers were raided last month on MG Palya Main Road. Those shops have opened again, but no plastic is being sold by them. "We have fined them Rs 30,000 each," said Vinodh. "We have handed over the keys but the old material is seized."

Is white Rice healthy? Ways it can help you out

W

hite rice is nothing but milled rice with its husk, bran, and the germ removed. This process changes the flavor and appearance of the rice but extends its storage life. After milling, the rice is finally polished – and you get the seed with a bright white, shiny appearance. Simply put, white rice is processed. All white rice starts as brown rice. But when the husk, bran, and germ are

removed, the white rice that we get is devoid of the essential nutrients like fiber and other vitamins and minerals. Does this mean white rice is completely bad? Not really. Come on, white rice is not poison. There are certain good ways in which it can help you out. White rice acts as a binding agent, making your stools more solid. Since

white rice contains very less fiber, it is easy to digest. And the abundance of carbs in white rice can give you energy. White rice also contains iron, another essential nutrient that helps treat diarrhea. Since white rice is made of carbohydrates, it is a great source of energy. White rice can be an excellent source

of carbohydrates for bodybuilders. As bodybuilders usually eat 5 to 6 small meals every day, white rice can be a good source of carbs. Since white rice is a bland food, it doesn't irritate the stomach – something that is important to treat gastritis at the earliest. But some s ources recommend avoiding processed foods during this time. As white rice is processed, it is better you take your doctor's opinion before consuming it.
