The evidence: • The uptick of non-traditional venues – barns, museums, breweries, etc. • Mismatching bridal parties – happy bridesmaids who look good > unhappy bridesmaids who look the same. • Cocktails during the ceremony – because let’s face it, we came for the party. See what I mean? No longer are weddings something to be endured, a trudge through the motions. They have become a celebration of each couple’s unique love. Check out page 16 for photographer Andrea Naylor’s five favorite ways to add a little personality to your day, if you need some ideas. These days there are no rules when it comes to planning your wedding. Couples are free to do what works for them, or at least more free than they have ever been. If that means a poufy white dress in a church, great. If it’s a lavender couture gown in an art gallery, that’s perfect too. Both are just as much a wedding as the other. What I love about this true-to-oneself wedding movement is the underlying sentiment that it isn’t what you wear or where you wear it (still with me?) that makes you married. It’s the commitment you’re making to the guy or girl you love that’s the thing. The whole and only thing. It’s the gathering of hearts and souls who support you that make it a party, not the Jordan almonds.

What brought an 18-year-old, bright-eyed, fresh-off-the-highschool-graduation-stage Caroline Quinn to Green Bay? “Bathrooms, straight up,” the 33-year-old Amherst native says. Quinn had already been accepted and was planning on attending college at UW-Eau Claire when her mother (who Quinn describes as “part shaman, part Martha Stewart”) pointed out that at UW-Green Bay she would enjoy her own private bathroom. In contrast, at her intended university she would be required to share a bathroom with a dorm full of girls. “And I was like, ‘Well, I’ll go there,” Quinn says. “I promise you it was nothing more than that.” Choosing a university based on the bathroom set up may seem frivolous to some, but it starts to make sense as Quinn describes her love for theatrical hair and makeup, her time spent as a regional makeup artist for Estee Lauder and how she used her talents to eventually open her own business, Mint Salon, on Main Street in Green Bay. The girl needs bathroom space, obviously.

“I was the girl braiding her friends’ hair on the bus to basketball games,” Quinn says, confirming what we all suspected. It turns out, Eau Claire’s loss was Green Bay’s gain. Quinn has since graduated from school bus braiding to blowouts, with a clientele of Green Bay’s elite and even the regular Packer player or two. Lately, a growing segment of Quinn’s clients are brides looking to be beautified for their big day, a task Quinn is happy to tackle. “I just love knowing that I’m going to help be a part of that sweet moment when a groom sees his bride for the first time,” she says. “Seeing that come together is really awesome.”

Beautiful Beginnings As a third generation hairdresser, you could say beauty runs in Quinn’s blood. Her mother and grandmother were both stylists, and it seems Quinn has passed on the gene to her 3-year-old daughter, Carmen, too. “She’s a hairdresser in the making,” Quinn says. “She even has her little mannequin head she works on.” Unlike her daughter, Quinn’s true passion for hair and makeup didn’t develop until college. While a theater major at UWGB, Quinn discovered the art of theatrical hair and makeup (it’s also where she met her fiancé, Zak). She graduated in 2005 with a degree in theater performance and began working as a freelance makeup artist for Estee Lauder. She soon became a regional makeup artist for the international brand, traveling to stores from Milwaukee to Marinette. About a year later, Quinn met Jody Graf, owner of Icon Salon in Green Bay. Graf was looking to add a makeup artist to her team, so Quinn came on board and began a two-year apprenticeship

program where she shadowed Graf and honed her hairdressing skills. “Jody was integral to who I am as a hairdresser and who I am now as a boss,” Quinn says. “I owe her a ton of gratitude for shaping me early on.” In 2009 Quinn left Icon Salon to rent a chair at Create Hair Loft in De Pere. After four years of renting, Quinn was presented with the opportunity to take ownership of the salon. While taking over an existing salon wasn’t in Quinn’s plans, the prospect introduced a new idea: opening her own business. She liked the idea of building a brand from the ground up. “I had never really thought about opening a salon, honestly,” she says. “I am definitely not a five-yearplan person. I’m like a tomorrow person, this month at the max. But I am a yes person.” That attitude spurred Quinn to research locations and the logistics of opening a salon. She found the perfect spot in the Olde Main Street district and, with one coworker from Create Hair Loft joining her, signed the lease in May 2014. Mint Salon’s doors officially opened in June. “From signing the papers to opening the doors was five weeks,” Quinn says. “Carmen was 10 months old at the time so she was there in a baby carrier on my back for hours while we scraped carpet glue and cut tile and painted.” Today Quinn works with a team of three employees and three independent contractors, all who bring something unique to the salon. Quinn says it can be challenging to embrace her role as “boss” at times, but the team environment provides many advantages.

“I’ve learned through owning a business that having a team allows you to achieve the most,” Quinn says. “By managing a team, I feel like I get to be even more creative because I’m obligated to new stylists who are looking to me to grow their skill sets and to continue to be motivated and inspired.”

“I’d love to have wedding parties where the guys come in after the ladies to get a quick style and grooming session. It’s his biggest day too!”

DON’T overstyle the kids.

“Some people want kids to look like little adults for their wedding, but I think kids’ looks should be genuine and easy going.”

DO stick a flower in it.

“I want as many flowers in someone’s hair as possible.”

The irony of it all is not lost on Quinn. “I’m not the girl who ever dreamed about a wedding. I never had a wedding album or thought about my wedding day,” Quinn says. “What I love, though, is hearing all about it and being a sounding board to these brides and giving an outside perspective from the crazy of planning.” Last year Quinn got plenty of opportunity to do just that. In 2015, Mint Salon styled more than 30 weddings and this year they are on track to surpass that number. Quinn says much of that growth is due to Mint Salon makeup artist Patricia Dufek. “When I first opened Mint, I figured if my current clients get married, we would do weddings,” Quinn says. “But [Patricia] has really built that bridal clientele. Quinn is loving the “undo” hair trend - messy, loose curls and styles that look effortless. Submitted photo.

Bridal makeup is her specialty.� When Dufek joined the team in October 2014, Mint Salon was able to accommodate more bridal parties and larger groups. This has allowed Quinn to expand the salon’s wedding services. “A lot of salons do weddings, but we wanted to make it a focus so we started A Mint Wedding,� says Quinn. A Mint Wedding Facebook page and website are dedicated to wedding trends, tips and tons of bridal eye candy, a must-follow for any bride-to-be. All of Quinn and her team’s hard wedding work paid off when Mint Salon won a 2016 WeddingWire Couples’ Choice Award. The award recognizes the top five percent of local wedding

professionals from the WeddingWire Network based on recent reviews from newlyweds. While Quinn is embracing her “girl boss� status more than ever, she says building a beauty empire is not a one woman show. The support of family, clients and coworkers makes it possible for her to realize her dreams. “I have systematically surrounded myself with this tribe of helpful people,� she says. “I’m very appreciative of where I am and what I’ve been able to do because of the people around me and the support I’ve gotten.�

As a photographer who specializes in weddings, I am all about details and thoughtfulness in design when it comes to planning your wedding day. Taking extra care in details makes a significant impact. One of the biggest pieces of advice I give my couples when planning their big day is to plan it as they would an intimate party with close friends and family. When you approach it this way, decisions, big or small, seem to be easier to make and the couple’s personality tends to shine through in every single detail. Here are five of my favorite ways that trendy couples are adding personality to their wedding day.

Naked cakes

Simple is classic and chic, and when it comes to choosing your wedding cake, there is no exception! Naked cakes (really just an unfrosted cake) are a lovely way to keep things simple even when planning the most elaborate celebrations. Whether you choose to keep it intimate at a small cabin on the lake or hope to plan the wedding of the year at the family farm, making the decision to have your wedding on your family or even a friend’s property will give you so much more freedom when planning your big day. This couple chose to plan an elegant wedding at the bride’s family estate where she grew up just outside of Lake Geneva. The bride, Morgan, and groom, Pete, had their ceremony outside in front of the family barn and then spent the night dancing away to a live band from Chicago. The bride’s parents had the family barn completely remodeled that year just for their wedding which included turning the old silo into a gorgeous indoor bar. Not to mention the bride’s father spent the summer growing a beautiful flower garden which set the backdrop for their ceremony. As project manager for On Broadway, Inc., Ahnna Luckeroth has an acute sense for detail. She ensures visitors enjoy the many experiences the Broadway district offers year-round. It makes sense, then, that when she began to plan her wedding to Tim Dexter for May 7, she and her future husband included many of the businesses she has worked with the last few years. “I trust these people, I know them and I know what their quality of work is like,” she enthuses. “It was easy to put it in the hands of people I knew would be outstanding.”

Luckeroth worked with Manke as a second photographer for his business in the past, and helped with his Farmers Market On Broadway booth, which was her introduction to the Broadway district. “When Tim and I got engaged, it was a nobrainer to have Paul as our photographer,” Luckeroth explains. “I knew him, how great his work is, and I knew I’d be comfortable.”

To build terrific triceps, Jennings suggests triangle pushups, tricep dips and tricep kickbacks. Shaping the shoulders and back becomes a bit more involved because it’s a complicated joint with many attachments, she states. “An ACE Fitness study analyzed the deltoid, which is the most visible shoulder muscle,” she says. “It has three distinct parts: anterior (front), medial (middle) and posterior (rear). Although there is some crossover, each of these is trained with different strength training exercise. Doing just one of the exercises would not be sufficient on a regular basis; be sure to train your whole shoulder.”

She says those exercises include the rear lateral raise (reverse fly) for posterior deltoid; the bent arm lateral raise for medial deltoid; and the overhead shoulder press for anterior deltoid. Jennings recommends using a weight that fatigues the muscle in eight to 12 repetitions, and to do the exercises every other day. On the off days, you should still be active. “Do some cardio and consider alternating upper body training three days per week and lower body three days per week,” she furthers.

When 35-year-old Tina Sauerhammer Dean, a plastic surgeon with Prevea Health, came home to visit family in Green Bay, she didn’t expect to meet her future husband. Tina was living in Washington D.C., but while at Hagemeister Park with a friend one night she met Kyle, 31-year-old director of operations for Dean Distributing. “Kyle approached me, we started talking, he invited to take me to my first Packer Game, and the rest is history,” Tina says. From the bride: Kyle and I independently developed a love for the big city while living on the West and East coasts, respectively, before our paths crossed on that fateful summer night back in our hometown. Rustic Meets Refined One O.A.K. Barn comes to life with love story By Colleen Riordan

Tucked in the lush farmland of Pulaski, One O.A.K. Barn is truly one of a kind.

As sunlight pours through the wall slats, there is a sense of warmth and home. Many of the original features are still intact. Hand hewn timbers and tamarack beams are lovingly adorned with swaths of cloth and vintage decor. A velvet settee, crystal chandelier, and modern drink cooler showcase the mix of different eras. Spacious enough to host big events, the barn’s open room has been broken up into small sections, like the lounge and bar, for more intimate gatherings. Photo by Kasey and Ben Photography

Bistro lights crisscross over a flagstone courtyard between the barn and a repurposed corn crib, looking over a timeless, romantic landscape. “It just feels like a little European bistro,” says owner, Jane Nowak. “It’s really just inviting. I planted some hostas and vines. This is one of my favorite areas to watch the sunset.” The former dairy barn aged well over the last century, but it was not always this way. Nowak counts the scars it took to bring it back to life, but talking about the place energizes her.

Nowak has an eye for design and love of history. It’s paid off. In 2015, she was stunned to be presented with the Pulaski Area Historical Society’s Preservation Award. The barn is estimated to be 110 years old, and the remaining silo is at least 70. Nowak wants to save as many of the structures on her 10 and a half acres as possible to maintain the farm’s history.

By the time the Nowak family purchased the farm in 2013, the once beautiful land had become an eyesore. The farm had passed through a number of different families over the years before becoming a rental property and going into foreclosure. Generations of farming heritage disappeared under mountains of discarded clothing, mattresses and spoiled food. “It scared a lot of people off. You couldn’t see the sides of the barn. We didn’t know what the barn looked like until we took the debris away.

With that can-do spirit and the help of family and friends, years of garbage was cleared away. Many of the buildings on the property needed work. Experts worked on a new steel roof, the electrical wiring, and reinforcing the structural integrity, but family and friends completed the majority of the work on their own. “There were days I’d go to bed and close my eyes, and I just saw flashes of junk. But my feet hit the floor in the morning, and I’d say ‘It’s gonna be a good day.’”

Farm life is in the family’s blood. Fred and Jane Nowak married 31 years ago after meeting on her parents’ farm in Angelica.

This beautiful barn has been the backdrop for many photo shoots and charity events.

“Maybe it was also a way of holding on to my childhood where, now looking back, growing up on a farm wasn’t so bad.”

Nowak wants the venue to be accessible to as many people as possible. She envisions women’s retreats, outdoor movies, and parties. Next year, her daughter hopes to celebrate her wedding there. With its rustic elegance, it’s the perfect space for family and friends to dance the night away.

The barn built up a sense of community and brought relationships even closer. Their three children, Jamie (28), Jason (26), and Steven (23) pitched in throughout the process. Neighbors regularly drop by to barter fresh eggs, take a cut of flowers from the garden, and gaze in wonder at the farm’s transformation.
