In December of 2013,

Bob and Bonnie’s Donuts and Cakes changed ownership. It was purchased from Bob and Bonnie Badura by Dan and Jessica Fishelson. A wholesale bakery, Bob and Bonnie’s makes donuts that are sold through convenience stores; and one day a week, they sell donuts directly to the general public. “It has a great name in the community, and we are in support of the fact that they permanently hire special-needs employees,” said Dan Fishelson, in regard to why he and his wife chose to get in to the baking business. “It offers a creative outlet – we can have a lot of fun with the products we make.” In addition to donuts, Bob and Bonnie’s offers a variety of wedding options. “We are trying to increase the awareness in the community regarding the skill level (of cake-making) that we can provide. We are more than just a wholesale donut bakery,” said Fishelson. Bob and Bonnie’s offers custom tiered cakes, sheet cakes, fondant cakes, cupcakes, cake pops, desert bars, cookies and donut bars, and all orders come with the option of delivery and set-up to the reception location. They also offer basic fillings and frostings, but can accommodate specific flavor profiles as

well, given enough notice. The Fishelsons have added Moraine Park Technical College’s culinary professor Sue Horvath to their staff. “She has skills that are hard to find, and she is exceedingly knowledgeable,” said Fishelson.

Creating your cake The Fishelsons remind couples that they have the freedom to think outside of the box when it

comes to the wedding cake. A tiered cake may be traditional, but a combination of sheet cakes for guests with a tiered cake for decoration and display is also an option, as are a variety of single-serving items such as cupcakes, cake-pops, desert bars or donuts. Jessica Fishelson also adds that, as a custom cake business, they are completely adaptable to any budget. If a couple has their hearts set on a multiple-tiered cake, but can’t afford it, other options are available, such as having the lower tiers of the cake be false, made of Styrofoam. The top tier would be real cake, perfect for the cake-cutting photo-op, then the servers can take the cake away and serve from sheet cakes. The Fishelsons also encourage couples to think about a design that represents them as a couple. Though they do have some examples on display at their location, they do not rely upon pre-designed ideas, and prefer to work with the couple to design something unique. The Fishelsons recommend that orders be placed six months to a

year in advance, as they usually fill between six and 10 orders per month during wedding season, and already have some bookings for this fall.

Sacred, beautiful, contemporary: Marian University available as venue for wedding ceremonies Taima Kern Action Reporter Media Marian University bills itself as a onestop shop wedding venue for couples planning their weddings. With ceremony and dining venues, as well as many locations for photo opportunities, the institution of higher learning hopes to play host for many nuptials. “The branding of the university is ‘inspire,’ so how can we inspire your wedding?” asks Jack Talbot, Marketing Manager. “It is a combination of the sacred, the beauty, the contemporary … the sophistication that we can offer (to couples).”

When “I Love You” Means Forever

In addition to providing the grounds for ceremonies to take place, Marian University also works alongside Sodexo, a catering company, which allows them to include catering in the arrangements via Flavours by Sodexo, the special event-serving portion of the company. Sodexo offers a team with a combined total of more than fifty years of catering experience across a variety of events. The university also has a list of other vendors, such as photographers, flower companies and the like which they have worked with in the past and may recommend. “And musicians as well,

student musicians,” adds Talbot, who is a musician himself. “A lot of people don’t think about nonDJ music, and with the music department here we can refer people to a specific performer or group.” Despite being a Catholic university, couples may have nonCatholic ceremonies. The university does, however, require a certain level of credentials in the presiding ministers that perform ceremonies on the campus. Inquiries as to those requirements can be directed to

Sr. Marie Scott, the Director of the Campus Ministry, who handles liturgical aspects of the campus. Locations at Marian University include: • The Stayer Center, a contemporary location that includes use of the atrium and the dining room. It seats 100-220, offers a full-service bar, patio outside, full technology, IT support, tile floor for dancing and foyer space, catwalk, hors d’oeuvres space, and a greenspace. • Hornung Student Center, often available during the summer, this location has a dining room that can hold 300-350 guests, a

stage for a band, musicians or DJ, lights, sound, big screen projection, outside patio, additional fireplace and greenspace. • The Dorcas Chapel is also available for those couples in which at least one of the two is either a student or alumnus of the university. This sacred space seats up to 220 people and offers a grand piano, organ and sound system. Those wishing to rent this space must meet with Sr. Marie Scott and follow specific guidelines regarding the presiding ministers. “We have a state of the art technology

and an IT support department here, which a lot of places don’t have,” said Talbot. “Part of the (rental) fee is for the support, so to have that on-hand can be helpful.” For more information, interested parties may call the Director of Campus Ministry at 920-923-7624, the reservations office at 920923-7642. Wedding trends come and go,

driven by many cultural influences, but few are as enduring and romantic as shabby chic/shabby glam. With its perfect combination of elegance and softness, bright sparkles and gentle hues, a shabby chic wedding complements the individuality and beauty of brides of every age and walk of life. And, thanks to many rental stores increasing their inventory of shabby chic items, it’s also one of the easiest and most fun wedding themes to create. Vintage wedding gowns, repurposed items and a wide inventory of thematic rental items can all work together to create a shabby chic wedding that is unique, memorable and affordable. You can visit RentalHQ.com to find your local American Rental Association member store that will help you with your individual needs. To create a wedding theme that is the perfect marriage of shabby and glam follow these three simple steps:

to a shabby chic ceremony

1. Flowers and lace Lace isn’t just for your wedding gown and flowers aren’t just for your bouquet. Touches of lace added throughout the ceremony and reception underscore the air of nostalgic elegance that’s essential to shabby chic. This can be as easy as adding lace touches to

outfitted to any venue. Adorn tables with classic silver candelabra or add a stunning crystal chandelier to an outdoor tent. You can find a variety of lighting options on RentalHQ. com. Many rental stores have increased their inventory of shabby chic decor items to meet brides’ demands, so renting can give you access to greater variety. Plus, you’ll reap the cost savings of renting versus buying.

Light plays an important role in any shabby chic themed event. For weddings, vintagelooking chandeliers, candelabras and hurricane lamps act both as decorative items and sources of romantic light. It’s easy to add thematic lighting to any wedding, even if your reception will be in an ordinary hall or tent. Rental companies offer an array of lighting options that can be temporarily

The pleasing union of diverse colors and textures is at the heart of a shabby chic wedding. Soft colors are the perfect foil for sparkles, and distressed wood complements the beauty of aged metals like silver and pewter. All these elements come together to evoke the grace and comfort of bygone times. Look for creative ways

wedding invitations or using pieces of lace as placemats or coasters on reception tables. Or, it can be as grand as a lace tent liner that evokes a romantic, bygone era. Florals are key to creating a shabby chic look. Whether the bride and groom stand beneath a bower of pastel blooms while exchanging vows, or floral accents throughout the bride’s couture, flowers and floral patterns lend romance and grace to every aspect of a shabby chic wedding.

3. Layers of texture

to harmoniously incorporate these touches into your wedding. For example, display your wedding cake, adorned with real flowers, atop a rustic wooden table. Decorate an antique metal birdcage with lace and ribbon and use it as a holder where reception guests can deposit cards for the bride and groom. Add petite crystal and pearl accents to bouquets and centerpieces. For a rustic food table, rent wooden barrels, top with an aged wooden plank, and present food on vintage serving plates. Finally, look for inspiration online. Resources like Pinterest, Etsy and theknot yield a wealth of ideas, and you can browse photos of other weddings and bridal creations to find the perfect look for your shabby chic wedding.

Swap sway for swing:

Wilson offers dance lessons to jazz up wedding receptions Taima Kern Action Reporter Media

You see it time and time again at weddings: The DJ hypes up the newlywed couple’s first dance, they walk across the floor toward each other, wrap into a tight hug and start to sway as “their song” begins to play. Something about an overture of love. It’s romantic and dreamy for them, but it leaves you, as the guest, walking towards the bar to get another drink. Then, when the dancing for everyone else starts, well, you’ve still got that drink in your hand, and you’re making small talk. Why get up? “No one else cares,” says Julie Wilson, of Shut Up & Dance! “It’s not their perfect song.” Luckily, Wilson offers an alternative. “A structured dance gets the attention. It makes it look like fun, it brings out the personalities of the couple,” she said.

An elegant waltz, a stalking tango, a sensual rumba, a sassy cha-cha, or a big-band inspired swing number, even an evolution-of-dance style mashup are just some of the possibilities for couples, mother/son, father/daughter or even whole bridal party dances. “You see the father and daughter out there starting with a dull sway, then there’s like a record scratch and it breaks into something fun,” said Wilson, by way of example. “Mother and son dances tend to remain traditional, but many brides want to get dad out on the dance floor to make a fool of himself. And dads can be reluctant, but I had one where he came in, swore he couldn’t dance, and after two lessons he was helping me choreograph.” Shut Up & Dance! offers hourlong lessons twice a week, for all ages, for $10. Wilson will also teach private lessons for $65 per hour, with as many as six participants allowed, and an additional $10 for the seventh and so on. For a basic lead-follow type of

dance, Wilson recommends four to five lessons to put together the basics, and for more complicated dances, she suggests starting as far as a year in advance, though every couple and dance is different.

party to arrive. She separates the guests by gender, teaches some basic steps, and then brings them together and has the group rotate partners, which she considers to be a great ice-breaker.

“Sometimes couples or groups come to me with their song already in mind and we work the dances around it, other times they know what type of dance they would like to learn, and we work the music in as we go,” said Wilson.

Wilson also offers a wedding workshop for couples interested in just learning some basics and applying them by themselves. The next workshop will be held from 5 to 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 28. Pre-registration is required as space is limited, and the cost is $30 per couple. Participants will learn basic lead/follow, rhythm, timing and a few basic steps from the waltz, foxtrot, rumba, swing and niteclub two-step. There will also be a section of dips and poses, perfect for “Kodak moments.”

Wilson breaks the types of dances down into smooth dances, such as the waltz, tango, foxtrot and Viennese waltz, and rhythm/Latin dances, such as swing, rumba, samba and the like. “Smooth dances are where you travel around the dance floor, it’s about smooth, graceful movements, rhythm dances are about isolating body parts, how you move your ankles, feet, hips, to make shapes and poses,” said Wilson.
