We’ve all heard life-changing stories on how opportunity led to success. Today, the tradition continues as the best and brightest students in Fond du Lac County get a jump start on their futures. Inside this section you will see young faces that perhaps you know, who may one day make a difference in our futures — in medicine and health care, in our environment and the way we live, and in how we work and play in a new world driven by fast-paced changes in technology. These students have excelled academically during their high school careers, became involved in volunteering and extra-curricular activities and in turn, reaped some valuable benefits through scholarship awards. Fond du Lac Area Foundation is pleased to partner with Action Reporter Media in producing this tribute to these bright and accomplished students who were driven to go the distance. This year Fond du Lac Area Foundation was able to award $164,400 in scholarships from 76 scholarship funds. “The students featured in this publication have worked very hard throughout their years in school to achieve this level of academic success,” said Sandi Roehrig, executive editor of the Foundation. “They are well deserving of the scholarships they have received.” Competition for well-paying jobs is fierce and a college education is necessary to give students the skills they need to compete in today’s world, Roehrig said. The average cost of attending one year in a state college for students living on their own is approximately $20,000, according to UW Colleges. “As tuition continues to rise, scholarships are so important to assist with those high costs of post-secondary education,” Roehrig said. “Fond du Lac Area Foundation is grateful to those donors who have chosen to establish scholarships to assist our young people in their quest for excellence in their lives.” Scholarship recipients come from all walks of life and were educated at one of nine public school systems and five private high school located within Fond du Lac County. Last fall some 21 million students attended American colleges and universities, constituting an increase of about 5.7 million since 2000. Females are expected to account for the majority of college students: about 12.0 million females will attend in fall compared with 9 million males, according to the National Center for Education statistics. Scholarship amounts ranges from $250 to the rare few who receive a full, four-year ride. The money comes from donors who believe in education and recognize the growing need to assist in funding high education costs. Action Reporter Media recognizes the great contribution parents, teachers and school administrators make to the success of these young people and thanks the advertisers for supporting a publication that will become a keepsake for proud families.
