Nomophobia: when a modern smartphone affliction leads to addiction By Brandpoint Media

veryday technology consumes everyone’s lives as the phone, computer, tablet and other high tech devices have become not just an object, but also a close companion. And for those who are extremely connected to their devices, going without them, even for only a few minutes, can be an anxiety-filled experience. A majority of American adults (56 percent) own smartphones, according to a recent study by the Pew Research Center. Having the ability to stay connected is a leap forward for technology, but it may come at a cost. Nomophobia, or the pathological fear of remaining out of touch with technology, is a relatively modern affliction. It’s basically a side effect from changes the mobile phone has made to human habits, behaviors and even the way we perceive reality. Dr. Chuck Howard, licensed psychologist and chair of the psychology programs at Argosy University, Denver, believes it can be more complex than simply stamping a label on the problem.
“Nomophobia is a result of people becoming more and more electronically connected to the point that their technology-based network and relationships become their home community,” says Howard. The term was originally coined from a 2010 study by YouGov, a UK-based research organization that wanted to look at anxieties suffered by mobile phone users. The study found that men and women often felt stressed when their mobile phones were turned off.

“Nomophobia can be a symptom of a potential addiction,” says Howard. “Users who are happy and having a good time when on their device, then face great stress and anxiety without it. They may obsess about it. They can’t put it down. This is when actual addiction becomes a threat.” When you see a behavior becoming destructive, and admit to having a problem, you can handle it in the same way as other types of addiction. Start by resisting the urge to constantly check your phone. Try limiting your social media networks and consider joining in-person networking groups or sports clubs. Set aside some time to leave your phone alone, such as at dinner with friends. If it becomes an addiction and begins to strain your relationships, consider asking others around you what they think. Be open to a sort of intervention where friends and family may candidly tell you their thoughts. No need to go cold-turkey, just take some small steps at a time to disconnect and enjoy the world around you, without looking through a smartphone screen. And lastly if you can’t do it alone, then seek professional help.

It can be difficult to determine where to start when beginning the process of finding additional care for mom and dad. The following are questions you might have about the process. What is a skilled nursing facility? Skilled nursing homes are designed to assist individuals who have health conditions that require constant monitoring and availability of medical personnel. Skilled nursing facilities, also known as nursing homes, provide 24hour supervision, meals, activities and health management support. Some senior living communities offer specialized care for people with Alzheimer’s or dementia. What’s the difference betWeen skilled nursing and assisted living? Nursing homes provided the highest level of care for seniors outside of a hospital, while
assisted living is best for seniors who need some help with bathing, dressing, toileting, grooming, and eating, but do not require 24-hour-a-day health care. When it is time to consider a nursing home for your parents? A nursing home may be a good choice if: both medical and personal care needs have become too great to handle at home. This may be due to a recent hospitalization, or a chronic illness which has gradually been worsening. A higher level of care may be needed temporarily after a hospitalization. are there social activities? Skilled nursing residences have a full calendar of activities and social events for residents, including art classes, ice cream socials, bingo and game night, prayer service, movie night and guest speakers. In addition, many have wellness centers, a salon, restaurantstyle dining and other amenities.
What happens if an elder has an emergency? Staff are available 24 hours a day to handle emergency situations. Skilled nursing facilities have arrangements with hospitals and health care professionals for assistance with emergencies. hoW much does skilled nursing cost? Cost varies depending on what level of care is provided and what type of accommodations chosen. Most seniors do not usually meet their long-term care needs from any one source. Instead a combination of support — private funds, long-term care insurance and government assistance is used to pay for care. Medicare covers post-hospital, shortterm skilled care only — and may not cover the cost of ongoing nursing home care. For low-income seniors who meet eligibility requirements, Medicaid might pay a portion of the cost.

Mary Jo Neumann enjoys helping people stay active into their aging years

M
ary Jo Neumann may be a familiar face to many around Fond du Lac. By persevering through personal battles, building her confidence and being relentless in her pursuits, Neumann found her calling at Lutheran Home and Health Services, helping LHHS employees as well as community members. “It will be 30 years Nov. 10 since I became a licensed instructor,” said Neumann. When she began, Neumann was a single parent with a seven-year-old daughter. She was trying to find her way out of a bad relationship that left her with the repeating words of

“you can’t do this, you can’t do anything.” She tried out Jazzworks, a version of Jazzercise. The result was unexpected courage, confidence and strength. “That’s when the ball started rolling, and things got better.” Neumann said. She took classes at Moraine Park Technical College, and then went to Marian College for a bachelor’s in Biology, with an emphasis on nutrition. She later returned to Marian University for her master’s degree. Soon after, Neumann started an exercise class in the Sacred Heart gym, with an average attendance of 60-70 women. This was followed by eight years
at Back-In-Action Rehabilitation, working with therapeutic exercise and five years as the wellness consultant and lifestyle coach at Mercury Marine. During this time, she got out of the original relationship, was remarried, operated the Bodyfirm Aerobic Studio on Main Street in Fond du Lac and had two more children, both sons. She continued to teach classes through both of her pregnancies, which only furthered her motivation, and helped her share encouragement and tenacity with other women. After she left Mercury Marine, she heard about an opening at Lutheran Homes and Health Services, in the field of physical therapy with patients. Though that job specifically didn’t pan out, she did get her foot in the door, and was able to open the gym at LHHS to community members and employees and take on a wellness coordination role. Since 2009, she has formally been the wellness coordinator at LHHS, and works with employees and community members from the ages of 18 to 85. She teaches a variety of classes, several of which focus on low impact, range of movement, and continuing flexibility. “I am a baby boomer,” Neumann notes, saying that she enjoys helping people stay active into their aging years. “The classes aren’t insanity, aggressively jumping around, and etcetera. It’s the good old exercises meant to stabilize and improve balance.” Neumann also speaks on a few radio shows offering nutrition and exercise advice, and is planning to host another local version of “Biggest Loser,” a weightloss program with friendly competition and regular meetings, as well as guidance and advice. She will also be producing a few exercise videos with Sirna Productions, of Fond du Lac, for participants of several different weight classes and ability levels. “I’m going to be a ‘Jillian,’” Neumann said, in reference to the host of TV’s Biggest Loser, Jillian Michaels. “I won’t take any excuses,” she smiled.

Nutrition Advice Mary Jo Neumann suggests that one of the easy ways to improve health and well-being is to embrace real, whole foods. “You have to embrace healthy food and enjoy food preparation,” said Neumann. “The most dangerous thing out there is Mountain Dew and diet Mountain Dew. The sugars, or worse, the aspartame, they aren’t good for you. And when did soda become okay for breakfast? It used to be a treat, but now it’s so common. It is addictive.” Neumann cooks with coconut oil, and notes that she has avoided trendy and fad dieting over the years. “If it is too good to be true, it probably is,” she said. “But there is nothing naturally bad. We’ve heard about good carbs, bad carbs, good fats, bad fats … in the ’80s there were no fats, but sugar was okay. Estate Planning: Initial steps to get the process started By Isabell M. Mueller, attorney

hatever the size of your financial estate, it is important to plan. The legal and financial issues raised by your death or incapacity, will be more difficult and expensive for your loved ones without a proper estate plan. Unfortunately, most of us procrastinate because thinking about and then planning for death or disability is an unpleasant prospect. It is far easier to focus on the more day-to-day concerns in our lives. However, while estate planning may seem like a daunting task, it need not be. As with almost everything else, getting started is the hardest part. A good estate plan will involve a number of legal documents, the
most common of which are wills or revocable trusts, beneficiary designations, financial and health care powers of attorney and living wills. However, before any legal documents can be drafted, there are initial steps you will need to take and issues to which you must give at least some preliminary thought. CONSIDER YOURSELF If you become incapacitated, but do not die, who should manage your finances? Who should make decisions regarding your health care? What values are important to you regarding your health care? CONSIDER YOUR SPOUSE If you pass away, should everything go to your spouse?
Do you have a blended family? Should part of your estate pass to your children even if you have a spouse? Have you signed a prenuptial agreement that addresses this? CONSIDER YOUR CHILDREN Who should raise them if they are minors? Who will be their guardian? Choosing a guardian will force you to decide what values are most important to you: religious beliefs, cultural identity, parenting styles, education, family size, geographical location, financial skills, just to name a few. Also, consider whether your children are mature enough to manage their inheritance. If not, the funds should be placed in a trust for their benefit.

Union members also install free smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) detectors where needed. Supply houses and local merchants typically donate the materials and equipment. On Saturday, Sept. 27, Local 400 union members and local contractors will once again volunteer to provide free safety inspections and minor repairs of heating systems in the City of Fond du Lac and North Fond du Lac. Additionally, new smoke detectors, batteries for existing, functional smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors will be provided to improve homeowners’ safety to those applicants qualified by local government services through Project Heat’s On. alls are the leading cause of both fatal and nonfatal injuries for those 65 years of age and over. Every 29 minutes, an older adult dies from a fall; every 14 seconds an older adult is seen in an emergency department for a fall-related injury. The chances of falling and of being seriously injured in a fall increase with age. “Falls are not a normal part of aging and the resulting injuries can steal quality life from seniors and their families,” said Sandy Tryon, ADRC supervisor and Falls Coalition committee member. “This
