F
our miniature replica churches — intricately hand-carved by Nicholas Steinmetz of rural Charlesburg — attests to his God-given talent and his love for detail. Steinmetz, now 85 years old, noted he doesn’t have any future elaborate wood carving projects in mind. Yet, in and around the beautiful country home he shares with his wife, Janet, it is evident he hasn’t been exactly idle in his senior years. Finished wood carved pieces, both large and small, wagons, replica steam engine, tractors, shelves, ornaments and numerous other creations. In his workshop behind his home, Steinmetz has proudly displayed the farm homestead, complete with its adjoining buildings. Born in Belguim, Wis., about 30 miles north of Milwaukee, Steinmetz was raised on a farm. The first two years of his formal education was completed in a one-room country school house. After that he journeyed to the village of Dacada, near Random Lake until he finished the eighth
grade at St. Nicholas Catholic School. Although Steinmetz never attended high school, his lessons in everyday living and helping on the farm, far surpasses any formal education, and he is wise beyond his years. At the age of 18, he started to work as a
mechanic until he was drafted into the army, serving from 1951-53. At that time he resumed working as a garage mechanic until he retired. Steinmetz was quick to point out when he got out of the army, he served in the reserves for about five years, and could be called back if needed, but ultimately received an honorable discharge. Subsequently, he is referred as a Korean War veteran with others he served with. Steinmetz referred to his life-long working career as a mechanic and enjoyed welding and machine work. “My main project (welding) was a 4-wheel riding garden tractor,” he said. “Welding was my hobby from years ago, but in 2003 I received a pace maker, and I couldn’t weld anymore, so I turned to wood carving.” His early wood carving projects were bird houses, but over time he has excelled and completed more difficult pieces, like the four miniature replica churches. Catholic Church in Charlesburg (now a museum), St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Marytown, St. Charles Catholic Church in Charlestown and Presentation Catholic Church in North Fond du Lac. Two of his miniatures share a place of honor in his home. Janet commented St. Mary’s Church is her favorite one because “we were married there 11 years ago.” Both has lost their spouses from cancer, Janet noted. The Presentation Church was given to the late Marjorie Balthazor of North Fond du Lac. It was given to her as a gift from Janet’s granddaughter and Marjorie’s grandson, with the intention that upon her death, they would have it returned to them. When asked where he gets his inspirations from, he jokingly pointed to his head, and added “from photos. I make my own blueprints and visualize what it is supposed to look like.” Even today, he and Janet have several albums of
photos of so many of his creations. He noted he never took any formal wood carving lessons or belongs to any wood carving clubs, but laughed, “Oh, on the farm, like fixing the barn doors.” Steinmetz admits to having a cabinet chock-full of magazines named “WOOD” in his work shop, that he likes to refer to and read. Tools of his trade like table saws, a band saw, miter saw, drill presses, a hand saw, drill bits, wood lathe are just some of his needed items in his workshop. Between Steinmetz and his wife Janet, they have a large blended family of 16 children (one son James is deceased), 68 grandchildren. She has 36 and he has 32 (at last count) and many greats and great-greats. When asked if he had any future goals, he quickly responded, “Let nature take its course. I help the boys (family) on the farm when they call and I never get bored. I always have two or three projects going.” ✦

O
ne of the many things that you will need to consider when preparing your estate plan is how you would like your personal effects to be distributed. Almost everyone has an item of special meaning that they would like distributed to a certain person. Traditionally, these requests were included in the Last Will and Testament or the revocable trust documents. The disadvantage to this method was that whenever you wanted to make a change, whether it be changing the item or the recipient, or adding additional items, you had to execute a codicil to your Will or an amendment to your revocable trust. This would incur additional costs because the codicil or the amendment had to be executed in the same formal manner as the Will or revocable trust, which usually meant a trip to the attorney’s office. Wisconsin simplified this process many years ago by allowing individuals to include, as a part of their estate plan, a Memorandum Regarding the Distribution of Tangible

Personal Property. This memorandum describes the items to be distributed in detail, and also lists the recipients. However, your Last Will and Testament or revocable trust document must specifically reference the potential existence of such a Memorandum in order for it to be a binding part of your estate plan. The memorandum must be signed and dated, and your signature should be witnessed or notarized. Once complete, the original Memorandum document should be placed with your other original estate planning

alk about happy, Foster Grandparent Volunteers and RSVP (Retired and Senior Volunteer Program) Tutor are among the happiest people I know. The only people happier than our tutor and mentor volunteers are the children they serve. ADVOCAP Foster Grandparent and ADVOCAP RSVP Tutor volunteers work one-to-one with students in our K-12 schools to provide positive academic, social, and emotional support. In our ADVOCAP Head Start program tutors also assist the three to five year old children with school readiness skills. When a child needs a little extra assistance with reading or following along in the classroom, there is really nothing that can substitute for a caring volunteer to give children the assistance and encouragement they need to be

If you’ve had Part B for longer than 12 months, the annual “wellness visit” is a good opportunity to develop or update a personalized health prevention plan, based on your current health and risk factors. Your provider may ask you to complete a “Health Risk Assessment,” as part of this visit. It includes: ● A review of your medical and family history; ● Developing or updating a list of current providers and prescriptions; ● Height, weight, blood pressure, and other routine measurements; ● Detection of any cognitive impairment; ● Personalized health advice; ● A list of risk factors and treatment options for you; and ● A screening schedule (like a checklist) for appropriate preventive services. All people with Medicare have coverage for preventive services, so you’ll pay nothing for either the “Welcome to Medicare” visit or the annual “wellness visit,” if your doctor or other qualified health care provider accepts Medicareapproved cost as full payment. Your Part B deductible doesn’t apply to these preventive services. However, if your doctor or other health care provider performs additional tests or services during the same visit not covered under Medicare’s preventive benefits, you may have a co-pay and the Part B deductible may apply. o help keep you healthy and save on costs, it’s important to understand which preventive services Medicare covers at 100 percent and which services you may end up paying for. Preventive services are important because they can identify health problems early on — when treatment works best — and minimize the risk of diseases. If you have original Medicare, you are entitled to an annual “wellness visit” and other covered preventive services. During this visit, a caregiver measures your height, weight and blood pressure, asks about you and your family’s medical history, discusses whether you’re at risk for any diseases, and may suggest other preventive services. If you ask your doctor for a complete physical – which is a more comprehensive exam that includes tests based on blood work — Medicare will not cover those services. It’s important to ask for the correct type of exam when you make your appointment. Medicare also covers a one-time preventive visit within the first 12 months that you have Medicare Part B coverage. This visit is called the “Welcome to Medicare visit.” Depending on your general health and medical history, you’ll get advice, education and counseling to help you prevent disease, improve your health and stay well. You need not have had a “Welcome to Medicare” preventive visit before getting your yearly “wellness visit.” However, if you do have the “Welcome to Medicare” preventive visit during your first year with Part B coverage, you’ll have to wait 12 months before your first annual “wellness visit” is covered. Please note that this annual visit is only covered once every 12 months (11 full months must have

hat happens when you take four friends from Fond du Lac who have never been to New York to the Big Apple? FUN! FUN! FUN! A year ago plans began to be made based an exhibit I had seen at the Brooklyn Museum titled, “The Dinner Party, Restoring Women to History”, by Judy Chicago. It is outstanding! I asked each woman what was on their “must see” list in New York. The list included the Statue of Liberty, Ground Zero, Tiffany’s, Time Square, the Brooklyn Bridge, Central Park, Rockefeller Square, Broadway play and more, all packed

The next day we received a lesson on how to use the subway from Sister Kathleen Ries, concierge at the Leo House where we stayed. With some trepidation, off we went and by the end of the four days they were using the subway like pros. One highlight was an hour long tour in Central Park by way of rickshaw pedaled by a young man from Estonia. He mentioned some of the 300 movies made there.
