Decade of GUIDING You to the Arts A

Here we are, at age 10.

It’s been a fantastic decade of bringing you, the reader, a deeper perspective of what is happening in the arts world on our beautiful peninsula. It’s been a fascinating decade. We’ve had the privilege of taking a deeper dive into a fundamentally important aspect of this gorgeous region. At the heart of everything here are the arts and the artists. Without these creators, we’d be a far less interesting place. Flatter. Desaturated. Devoid of a sense of “soul” and “home” so many feel when they spend time on the Door peninsula. Artists of all sorts have found their way to these shores, following a call only their souls can hear. There’s something here. Something powerful. It makes creative people want to create. It includes artistic expressions of all sorts—writers, musicians, actors, painters, sculptors, photographers, dancers. Over the years, we’ve met and been enriched by so many of them.

so to speak—so local residents, visitors and other artists can find these creative people and places. They are not secret. We want you to find them.

Because, let’s face it, the only romance in the notion of a starving artist, is the notion. Indeed, we want our artists to thrive so they have the means to continue creating and providing us with more. When that happens, the soul of the county can only grow larger and stronger. You see? We need the artists as much as they need this place. There are few locations in the country like this one—with arts so vibrant and so accessible. You can chat with a worldrenowned painter or a playwright, all in the same day. Sometimes we grow accustomed to this ridiculous wealth of good fortune. But we should never take it for granted.

From early on, there was no doubt she was destined for a life in art, but the sculptor in her had to be teased out. Looking back, though, it is clear: that sculptor was there all along. Consider her teenage job at a local plastics factory where she would find herself making things out of the plastic—sculpting—instead of doing the work required. “I was awful at that job,” she joked. “I was not very popular there at all.” Go back even further, when she was a young student. Her mother needed to send her off to school in Green Bay an hour earlier than necessary because “on my way, something would always catch my eye. I’d never get to school on time,” she said now, with a laugh. “I was always interested in nature. There was always something that needed to be saved, like a caterpillar in the road...” That hasn’t changed much, said Sibilsky. “I still work from nature.” Like those long-ago walks to continued on page 22 >>>

school, the 53-year-old Sibilsky’s path to becoming an internationally-recognized sculptor was not a straight one. A career in the arts appeared to be her destiny, and she was accepted to the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design out of high school, majoring in illustration. Although she toyed with the idea of sculpting even back then—and had plenty of encouragement from professors who recognized her innate talent—she stuck with illustration, in part to please her parents who wanted her to have a more employable major. After college, Sibilsky worked in various advertising agencies in Green Bay, doing design and illustration. Eventually, she decided to create her own job. Shortly after college, she married Randy Sibilsky, and that same year, opened The Idea Factory, a design studio in Algoma. Randy worked nights at Algoma Hardwoods and days with Bren at the studio. “Because of the high quality of work produced, every job Bren did resulted in more work,” said Randy. “The work came to us.” “I was sleeping at The Idea Factory more than at home,” said Bren. Eventually, because of spending more time at the office than at home, the couple decided to run the business from their home. After doing that for several years, it was time for a change, Bren said. “I either had to grow or go.” So, she went. But she didn’t just close up shop, she moved to

Boulder, Colorado—a dream she’d had for some time. She loaded the car to the brim and headed west, without Randy, or a job in place. She quickly landed one at the now defunct Front Range Publishing as a designer. “I loved it, but the pay wasn’t that good.” So, she continued to freelance on the side and enjoy her Colorado adventure. At a certain point, she and Randy had to make a decision, she explained. Either he would move to Boulder or she would move back to Algoma where Randy had inherited his grandfather’s homestead. Bren had a new job lined up in Colorado with good pay, “but I wouldn’t have loved it,” she said. She decided to return, on the condition she could work as a fine artist and “do whatever I wanted to do.” Randy agreed. At first, she did drawings, but the sculptor in her was begging to be set free. “The realization finally hit that I needed to do this,” she said. She started in a small space, by a window in the house, but because the work was messy, she moved to an outbuilding—her husband’s wood shop…and then to the large barn on the property. After taking classes in bronze casting at the Peninsula School of Art in Fish Creek, she began to work in that medium. By that time, her gallery in Algoma was gaining traction, and she formed the Atelier of Sculpture and Art. Various classes and workshops soon began. “People would want to learn how to sculpt something. Individuals would come,” she said, explaining the progression. When we visited Bren Sibilsky for the Arts Guide interview, she was completing work on a commissioned piece—a life-sized horse head. Randy, who currently works in the Art Department at WS Packaging Group in Algoma, was by her side, helping, and proud. The original clay sculpture was revealed when the rubbery cast she built around

PA G E 2 2 | D O O R P E N I N S U L A A R T S G U I D E 20 17

the clay head was removed. The rubbery shell will be used to create the bronze cast, a tedious, time-consuming and exacting process, she explained. It’s not cast in bronze yet, but the original sculpture itself is an impressive piece on its own, in both size and detail. Perhaps most interesting is how much life the sculpture has. It’s not merely a representation of a horse—it’s as if the horse’s life force was captured in clay. Sibilsky understands horses, having owned and cared for them and having mourned the loss of a special one. Her sculpture “Esoteric Promise,” featured on the cover of this 2017 Arts Guide, is partly a response to an emotional journey involving that favorite horse. “I was accepted into two international shows last year,” Sibilsky explained. “I was sculpting for that while caring for my dying horse.” She was also still mourning the recent death of her father and “was starting to question life, death and life circumstances. What is this all for?” she asked. That emotion was the mindset behind Esoteric Promise, a piece filled with symbolism. “Most of the art is a healing thing,” she explained. “It speaks of some kind of journey.” It’s a journey she feels everyone understands. “It doesn’t matter if you are rich or poor or where you come from. We’re all on this journey. Later in life, the hard lessons start showing up. The really deep stuff happens, which is what I think we’re really here for.” But her work isn’t dark. It’s strong and often joyful. Perhaps that’s because she’s doing work she was always destined to do: sculpting. Most days see Sibilsky creating in her studio, something she looks forward to, daily. “In the morning having my coffee, I can’t wait to get to work. I have paper with scribbles all over with ideas.” More ideas than she’ll ever be able to create, she said.

Bren’s work has been exhibited at Manhattan Arts International and the Salmagundi Club Juried Show, both in New York, and is a four-time finalist in the International ARC Salon—a worldwide art competition. She's also represented at many local public galleries and shows, including the Mill Road Gallery in Sister Bay. In Memoriam:

Ellen Topelmann BY HEIDI HODGES

Ellen Topelmann, our 2016 Arts Guide co-cover-artist along with husband Karsten, died August 1, at age 90, just months after the Guide’s publication. PA G E 6 0 | D O O R P E N I N S U L A A R T S G U I D E 20 17

Together, the couple ran the Hanseatic Art Gallery in Ephraim. (Karsten continues with the gallery and his art.) She was well-known for her detailed and whimsical depictions of Ephraim and European scenes. After Topelmann’s death, her son Lars wrote, in an email to the Door County Advocate, “Most of her paintings featured what she called ‘little people’ enjoying life.” Her daughter Lisa wrote that her mother was “an absolute optimist and conveyed a sense of positivity and joy in her life and in her artwork.” During an early 2016 interview with the Arts Guide, Ellen explained she had been an artist her entire life, starting in childhood. “I was number one in school,” she said, although World War II interrupted her plans. After surviving the war, Topelmann immigrated to the U.S. and settled in Chicago, where she found work doing film illustrations and animations. She was the illustrator behind the famous Hamm’s beer commercials. In Chicago in 1959, Ellen met Karsten, an immigrant and artist from Munich, Germany. The two wed and worked as artists in Chicago and had three children, Lisa, Lars and Tanja, who died in her youth. Today, Lisa and Lars both work in arts-related fields.

Top left art: “Our Village” by Ellen Topelmann. Bottom left: Lifelong artists Ellen and Karsten Topelmann in their home, spring of 2016. Ellen died August 1, 2016, at the age of 90. Above: “Summertime in Ephraim” by Ellen Topelmann

In 1969, the couple found property in Ephraim, where they eventually settled. It wasn’t long before the two cut work ties in Chicago and made Ephraim their permanent home. They opened their Hanseatic gallery in 1972. “The nicest thing is when you have a profession that you really enjoy,” said Ellen during last year’s interview. “This worked out very well. We are happy and we made a living with it.” Then, she smiled and turned to the window to see clouds parting on what had been a cold, gray day. “And here is the sun,” she said, with a smile.

Situated on a spectacular piece of waterfront property on Peninsula Players Road between Egg Harbor and Fish Creek, the Peninsula Players is in its 82nd season—America’s oldest professional resident summer theater. Its new, modern stagehouse is in keeping with the theater’s open-air pavilion feel for which it is famous. The season consists of five plays: The Actuary, a world-premier comedy drama in reverse, June 13 – July 2. Peter and the Starcatcher, The adult prequel to the treasured story of Peter Pan. Based on the novel by humorist Dave Barry. July 5 – 23. The Bridges of Madison County, a ravishingly beautiful musical about a “What if...?” romance. Based on the best-selling book by Robert James Waller. July 26 – August 13. Lord Arthur Savile's Crime, a delightfully silly comedy chock full of murder attempts. Based on the story by Oscar Wilde. August 16 – September 3.

Performances are held in the garden at Björklunden Estate, located on the shores of Lake Michigan, just south of Baileys Harbor. Door Shakespeare’s 2017 season runs from late June through August 19, featuring Shakespeare's Twelfth Night and The Heart of Robin Hood by David Farr. Island Players will again offer their summer Acting Camp at the Red Barn. Week One runs from July 10 – 14 for ages 7 – 9. Week Two is July 17 – 21 for ages 10 -14. The Island Players
