About

FUTURE

The Future 15 was created to recognize 15 area young professionals who are presently growing and excelling in their respective fields, and will continue to positively influence the growth, prosperity and quality of life in Manitowoc County well into the future.

In addition to the 15 honorees, three award winners also will be honored with the Young Professional of the Year Award sponsored by Associated Bank, N.A.; the Young Professionals Advocacy Award sponsored by Schenck, SC and the Entrepreneur of the Year Award sponsored by Steve Ford - State Farm.

& Additional Awards

The Young Professional of the Year Award honors a role model in career, community and future impact. Not only does the professional excel in his or her career, but the person also has left and will continue to leave a lasting footprint within the community through volunteer work. The honoree of this award is certainly one of the most promising professionals Manitowoc County has to offer. The Young Professionals Advocacy Award is an annual recognition of an individual or organization that champions a cause that benefits the quality of life for young professionals. The Sail Committee, a group of volunteers who gather monthly to retain young professionals in Manitowoc County through social networking opportunities and professional development programs, chose this year’s recipient from among those individuals who have championed not just Sail, but all young professionals. The Entrepreneur of the Year Award is an annual recognition of a business owner who has already influenced Manitowoc County economically and has contributed even more to his or her community and his or her industry through volunteer efforts.

Community Events Encourage Business Relationships Looking for a great way to make new business connections and sharpen your networking skills while being in the company of your peers? Then Sail is the one organization you need to join. Six years and still growing, this organization and dynamic group of young professionals have accomplished a lot. The Sail Committee, in collaboration with The Chamber staff, has spent countless hours planning and organizing events and programs that benefit their members and ultimately the Manitowoc County community. They offer Lunch and Learn educational workshops featuring speakers who cover topics that are relative to the opportunities and challenges young professionals face in their career development. The committee also recognizes the need to foster events that give their members a chance to network in a casual, welcoming environment. All of their events also incorporate, through different avenues, ways to give back to the community. The highlight of the year is the Sail Annual Banquet with the recognition of our Future 15.

On behalf of Sail and The Chamber of Manitowoc County, I would like to congratulate this year’s Future 15 winners! I want to thank each and every one of you for helping to make our community a better place through your dedication and passion given to your volunteering, mentoring and the inspiration you have given all of us. I hope all of you continue to be involved and grow your involvement with Sail. We appreciate your efforts to help grow and make our organization better each year. We encourage all of you to bring new members into our fold to make Sail even more vibrant. I also want to thank all of you who have served on committees and helped with various events throughout this past year. Without all of your effort and dedication, we would not be where we are today.

Afton Bruckschen enjoys the movie, “The Blind Side.” “It makes me realize how blessed I am to have all the things in my life that I do,” she said. Bruckschen’s goto movie snacks are “popcorn and anything chocolate.”

Katie Holmes would be Bruckschen’s cast choice to play her in a movie. “I just remember being able to relate to her while she was Joey on ‘Dawson’s Creek,’” Bruckschen said. “She played the role perfectly and she seems like a very down-to-earth, caring person.” In her free time, Bruckschen enjoys reading, camping, hiking, bonfires and hanging out with friends.

Bruckschen Administrative Assistant, Americollect A desire to help and inspire others is the premise under which Afton Bruckschen lives her life. “I want to be successful in everything I do, but I also want success for those around me,” she said. “I’m willing to help out a co-worker or friend any way I can to help them reach the level of success they have set for themselves. I believe nothing is out of reach. It might take a while to get where you want to be, but in the end you will reach your goal,” added Bruckschen. While working as administrative assistant at Americollect, she also wants to help others in the community continue to grow. She serves as the fundraising co-organizer and believes that money raised to find cures for diseases or to help those in need is extremely important. Americollect fundraisers in the past have included: The March of Dimes, Big Brothers Big Sisters and breast cancer awareness, raising money through silent auctions, food days and fun games. This year, they have added two more fundraisers, a Walk for Multiple Sclerosis and a Walk for Alzheimer’s disease. “Both of these diseases affect many people throughout the community and by working together to raise money, we can and will help make a difference,” said Bruckschen.

Also every year, back-to-school items are gathered and donated to the Domestic Violence Center. “There are families in our community who don’t have the basic necessities their children need for school, and I love that we are able to provide them with the needed materials,” she said. They also pick two or three families every year and buy them Christmas gifts anonymously. The gifts are wrapped and then given to the Salvation Army to distribute to the families. Last year, Americollect employees took part in their first-ever Christmas caroling group at the Manitowoc Health Care Center, with the help of some of the members there. “It was such a great feeling to see how such a small and simple act of kindness really does affect others in the community,” noted Bruckschen. She also serves as a preschool teacher at Jesus’ Lambs of Grace Preschool in Manitowoc. She has an elementary teaching degree and is continually learning new concepts that help not only in the classroom, but in daily life. “My students challenge me in ways that make me want to attend conferences and learning workshops so I can better reach the needs of the children, their families and also my co-workers. These jobs both give me the opportunity to do the things that I love, continuing to learn new things and helping others in the community,” said Bruckschen. She is single with no children. Her boyfriend is Zach Haag.

Dr. Matthew

Campbell General Surgeon, Manitowoc Surgical Associates | Holy Family Memorial Hospital Dr. Matthew Campbell, a general surgeon at Manitowoc Surgical Associates/Holy Family Memorial Hospital, will tell you most of his achievements center around patient care. The majority of his time and effort is spent caring for individuals with conditions or diseases that require surgery including cancers (primarily breast, colon, lung and skin) and urgent conditions (like appendicitis, bowel obstructions, gallstones and trauma) where patients find themselves in considerable physical and emotional distress. “The patients for whom I am able to care throughout this process are truly my greatest accomplishment,” said Campbell. He received his medical education at the Ohio State University with subsequent surgical training at Mount Carmel Medical Center in Columbus, Ohio. Campbell serves as chairman of Holy Family’s Institutional Review Board, as the physician liaison to the American College of Surgeons Committee on Cancer, and as a member of Holy Family Memorial’s Operating Room Governance Committee.

WI-5001403187

He also has participated in a number of international surgical missions projects, most recently to Ethiopia (twice), Bolivia and Myanmar. Prior to coming to Manitowoc, he also had served in the Philippines, Rwanda, Outer Mongolia, Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Thailand and Myanmar. He currently has projects planned in Bolivia and Zambia. Most of this work has been via World Medical Mission or with Medical Ministry International.

Campbell is a member of Alpha Omega Alpha (national medical honor society), an associate member of the American College of Surgeons and is board-certified in general surgery by the American Board of Surgery. He also is a member of the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons. He is active at Faith Evangelical Free Church where he teaches a weekly Bible study, helps to coordinate small-group ministries and serves on the Impact Global Missions Committee. Dr. Campbell also has volunteered as a physician at the Touched Twice community outreach event and has helped his Bible study group to bring meals to Hope House. Much of his “hobby time” is spent with his family or in the service activities noted above. He has been happily married for almost 11 years to Wendy, and they have two daughters, Emma 7 and Tessa 5. “I spend much of my time with them, though they have become used to the unpredictable schedule of a surgeon,” Campbell said. His interests in camping, landscape photography and road bicycling have taken a back seat in recent years, but he participates in them when time allows. Campbell’s future goals are “to continue to establish my practice in the community such that Manitowoc can continue to be our long-term home. I hope to continue regular service on international missions projects and to start taking other local health care workers along with me.”

Campbell’s favorite movie is, “The Scarlet and the Black.” “(It’s) an incredible story of forgiveness that often goes unnoticed,” he said. When asked who would star in a movie of his life, Campbell responded: “Probably Ron Howard or Sylvester Stallone. Look at their pictures and decide for yourself.”

“(I) would love to pick (Don Cheadle’s) brain about the filming of ‘Hotel Rwanda’ and his activism.” When not working, Campbell can be found spending time with his family and friends, biking, drinking coffee, making people laugh, reading, drinking more coffee and studying Scripture.

I really enjoy action films, so here goes: A thief steals a set of important historical documents, Nic Cage steals them back and gets the girl,” Grodek said of his directorial debut. “I enjoy watching most anything sports related,” Grodek said. “My news channel of choice is ESPN.” Grodek said he would love to make a religious pilgrimage to Rome and see all of the catholic and ancient sites.

A quote from “Shawshank Redemption” best describes Holst, she said. “Fear can hold you prisoner. Hope can set you free.”

Marissa

Holst

Holst dreams of going to Italy. “I have family who live there and I would really like the opportunity to meet them and experience the culture,” she said.

Commercial Insurance Agent, Ansay & Associates Marissa Holst is proud to say she has been influenced by the many leadership opportunities she had growing up in Manitowoc. She was involved in many community activities through school and was given leadership roles at a young age. Holst was the captain of the dance team in both junior high and high school. She was a teacher’s assistant at both Wilson Junior High and Lincoln High School and also at Jean Wolfmeyer’s School of Dance. After graduation, she attended the University of Wisconsin-Manitowoc and became a member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. In May 2007, she graduated from UW-Green Bay with a bachelor’s degree in business administration. After graduation, she taught dance and sold insurance before being hired by her current employer, Ansay & Associates (formerly the Vincent Group), as a commercial insurance agent. Since then, she has obtained her Certified Insurance Service representative designation and also has begun the process of becoming a Certified Insurance counselor. Within the last year, she has been responsible for developing the Select Business Unit, which focuses only on the small businesses insured at the agency. “These businesses help our community grow and I feel it is important to give them the focus needed to ensure they are protected,” stated Holst. In addition to working at Ansay, she also teaches dance three nights a week, working with children ages 3 to 18. She volunteers her weekends to help the students at competitions, along with holiday and spring performances. “Not only do I teach dance to these students, but I also

spend a great deal of time mentoring them individually. I love working with kids and hope that the effect I have on them will help them grow to be strong young professionals some day as well,” said Holst. She became a member of Sail in 2010 and graduated from Leadership Manitowoc County last May. “Growing up in Manitowoc has given me so many opportunities that I have felt it is important to give back to the community,” said Holst. One of her favorite local organizations is Holiday House, helping with their wreath sales and bake sales and helping to create a memorial garden, which will be constructed in the summer of 2012. Last year, she also helped raise money to buy turkeys at Thanksgiving to donate to Peter’s Pantry and took part in the Salvation Army’s “Adopt a Family” at Christmas.

Holst would like to create a movie based on her grandparent’s relationship. “My grandma and grandpa have boxes full of love letters they wrote to each other back when he was in the war.” “I would love to have the opportunity to meet Denzel Washington,” Holst admitted. “I love every movie he has ever done and despite all his success, he always seems to remain down-toearth and humble.”

Holst recently married her husband, Brad, and has a 13-year-old stepdaughter, Mercedes. “One of my goals is to contribute to the growth of the community by raising a family here. I’ve enjoyed watching the city grow over the years and would like to give my children the same opportunities that I’ve been given,” she said. Jewelry provided by Rummele’s Fine Jewelry & Gifts.

Jarod Husmann’s favorite movie is “Top Gun” and he’d select Tom Cruise to star as him in the screen version of his life. “I always wanted to be a fighter pilot,” he said.

Dramas and comedies influence Husmann’s snack choice. “Ice cream or popcorn. Depends on the type of movie,” he noted. Husmann would’ve liked the chance to meet Chris Farley. “I thought his movies were hilarious,” he said. The Foo Fighters are part of Husmann’s playlist.

Husmann Manager of Rehabilitation Services, Aurora Health Care, Manitowoc County Jarod Husmann believes he has the opportunity to make a difference within the community as manager of Rehabilitation Services for Aurora Health Care in Manitowoc County. After graduating from The College of Saint Scholastica in 2002 with a master of arts degree in physical therapy, he began practicing both in the hospital and outpatient settings, with the goal of providing personalized and quality care. As Husmann developed a niche in practice, he was “drawn to the challenges of integrating clinical practice, human services and business development.” He wanted to make a difference in the lives of people in the community and fulfill his career aspirations, which led him in 2006 to graduate from Capella University with a master of science in human services with specialization in health care administration. Husmann began his management career in 2008 with Aurora Health Care. “Throughout my management experience, I am often reminded of the words of Peter Senge who said, ‘We need to think less like managers and more like gardeners. Farmers don’t grow crops … they create conditions in which crops can grow.’” In 2009, he joined the Wisconsin Physical Therapy Association Medicaid Committee and Committee on Reimbursement Experts. The focus of the committee is to pursue better practices to enhance cost-savings to the state and member constituents.

In 2009-10, Husmann graduated from The Chamber of Manitowoc County leadership program. That leadership team hosted a bowl-a-thon and raised thousands of dollars for Peter’s Pantry in Manitowoc. In the spring of 2010, he was approached and voted to be a member of the Felician Village/ St. Mary’s Home Board of Directors. Also at that time, he was asked to chair the subcommittee on Employer of Choice for Felician Village/St. Mary’s Home to provide recommendations back to the board on related topics. In the fall of 2010, Aurora completed the addition of the Aurora Rehabilitation Center on Dewey Street to provide rehab services to the southwest corridor of Manitowoc County. In the summer of 2011, Aurora’s new oncology rehabilitation service was voted Best of the Lakeshore Rehab Services by the community. Also at that time, Husmann became a Fellow Designate of the American College of Healthcare Executives, which was a professional goal of his. “My career goal is to continue to be challenged to provide an exceptional health care experience to the individuals in our community,” he said. Husmann noted he has “been blessed to have been given the opportunity to work with an amazing group of individuals, both within Aurora and throughout the community.” He credits his family’s selflessness for allowing him to continue his passion and drive to be a community leader. He and his wife, Marissa, have two children: daughter Maddy, 4, and son Liam, 2.

“After all, tomorrow is another day,” said by the character of Scarlett O’Hara from the movie “Gone With the Wind” best describes Isselmann, she explained.

Carla

Isselmann which is the largest fundraiser for the Two Rivers Optimists.

Isselmann would pick Jennifer Aniston to portray her on the big screen. “She is successful and dedicated to her career,” Isselmann said. “She also seems to be a down-to-earth person who goes with the flow of things.”

Eric is a firefighter/paramedic for the City of Two Rivers. They do several events throughout the year to raise money for charities, the largest being the Muscular Dystrophy Association. They hold a bowling tournament each year, with all proceeds going to the MDA, and Isselmann helps with that event, as well as their booth at Ethnic Fest, Breakfast with Santa, and the annual Fire Station Open House.

“I would love to take a road trip down the West Coast of the United States,” Isselmann said. “I would stop at some wineries, enjoy the beautiful coastline, see some exciting cities and have a relaxing time away from the hustle and bustle of daily life. I would start at Seattle and end at San Diego.”

Manager of Cost Accounting / Payroll / Accounts Payable, Lakeside Foods, Inc. Carla Isselmann is a 1993 graduate of Valders High School and a 2000 graduate of Silver Lake College, earning a double major in accounting and management. She is employed with Lakeside Foods, Inc. at the corporate office in Manitowoc. She started there at age 15, working her way up through the ranks to her present position of manager of cost accounting/payroll/accounts payable. In addition to her job at Lakeside Foods, Isselmann believes it is important to volunteer time to the community. She is a member of St. Peter the Fisherman Catholic Church in Two Rivers and her three children (Courtney, 9; Ethan, 7; and Matthew, 5) are students at St. Peter the Fisherman Catholic School. She has been a room representative for the Home and School Association as long as she has had a child in the school. She also is in her second year of being treasurer for the organization. School events she has been involved in include the pizza sale, Shark Shuffle, annual sharing auction and annual flower sale. She also made a birthday bag for each student during the 2010-11 school year. Isselmann also is a member of the Two Rivers Optimist Club, helping out with events whenever possible. Her husband of 12 years, Eric, is in charge of the annual Punt, Pass and Kick event so she helps with the planning and day of the event. She also works for the Kites Over Lake Michigan event,

“Although my career and helping in the community are very important to me, my family is the most important,” said Isselmann. “I find that I have very little time for myself because I am always doing what I can to keep up with the kids’ school and extracurricular events, Eric’s abnormal job hours and the chores at home. Although balancing work and home is a lot at times, it is also very rewarding.” She added: “We work hard, whether at our jobs or at home, but make sure there is plenty of time to do things as a family, whether it is having movie night, game night, taking one of our several summer camping trips, taking a bike ride or walk on the trail, or anything else that allows us to spend time together.”

Isselmann’s favorite movie is “Pretty Woman.” “I love a good ‘chick flick’ and this one is my favorites,” she said.

Kronforst admits to being a homebody. “On paper that sounds incredibly boring, but I love it,” she said.

15

Kronforst Co-Manager and Vice President, Schroeder’s Department Store Theresa Kronforst has been fully committed to Two Rivers and plans to stay since her return in August of 2008. She has been a full-time employee of Schroeder’s Department Store off and on since she was 10 years old and through the years had quit, but then begged to come back. When her dad passed away, she and her sister, AJ, stepped in to fill his shoes “and tried to do between the two of us what one man did alone … he was so involved in everything,” she said. Kronforst is the co-manager and vice president at Schroeder’s. She feels her major accomplishment is bringing the Great Trivia Contest to life for Two Rivers. “There had been talk of it for a few years, then when I came onto the Main Street board of directors, we made it happen,” she said. “Not only does it give fellow supporters something to do in our long winters, it raises a good amount of money for the Two Rivers Main Street program.” She has been on the Two Rivers Main Street board of directors for about 2½ years. She filled in as president for part

of 2010 and was nominated to serve as president for the 2011 term. Because Schroeder’s is in the core of the downtown, the store also is an active member of the Two Rivers Business Association. When Kronforst was a member of the design committee, they were looking for ways to get back to their roots. She suggested having planters with flowers downtown and spearheaded the job with a few other volunteers. As a result, there are now splashes of color downtown in the form of planters with flowers. Kronforst also is closely involved with the Ethnic Fest committee. They start planning in the first quarter of the year. Since the Main Street director arrived in 2010, Ethnic Fest has improved dramatically. “We now have two entertainment stages with acts representing the globe, and this year we were able to bring back some of the more popular food and craft vendors, such as turkey legs and the Dutch shoe carver,” she said. Kronforst noted that improving a business isn’t something that can happen overnight. “It takes time to come up with the ideas, then it takes time to think through how you can go about doing it and making sure you’re doing it right. AJ and I have made a lot of changes and improvements since we took over in 2008. It can be a lot to handle, but there is no place I’d rather be,” she said. Kronforst is married to Nathan, and he has two daughters, Maddie, 10, and Sammy, 9.

Theresa

Kronforst’s leading man in her directorial debut would be actor Jason Statham. “I’m not sure of the storyline, but I think there would be a lot of scenes that he would have his shirt off,” she joked. Kronforst selected a quote from Mel Brooks to describe her: “If you’re quiet, you’re not living. You’ve got to be noisy and colorful and lively.”

She also is in the process of becoming a Big Sister through the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Manitowoc County. “I feel strongly about strong role models being present in our community to assist and provide children with opportunities they may not regularly have,” said Krull.

Krull also has started an FCCLA chapter (Family, Career and Community Leaders of America) at both Mishicot and Lincoln high schools to provide more opportunities for students to explore career options.

I plan to continue to create more partnerships between business and education to better prepare our workforce so that all students have goals for life after high school,” said Krull.

Three years ago, Krull began work with the state STEM Equity Pipeline project when Lincoln High School was chosen as one of three secondary pilot sites in the state. She now leads a team of eight individuals concerning awareness and interest in science, technology, engineering and math career opportunities especially for nontraditional students. Krull also has developed a relationship between Habitat for Humanity and the school’s building construction class in which students get the opportunity to turn classroom

She is a member of the Sail committee and helps to plan many educational and social events. She also is the lead school organizer in the Career Expo and Reality Store events for high school sophomores and seniors each year, and is always looking for new ideas and grants to write.

Krull typically munches on pretzels while watching a movie. The educator’s directorial debut would be a documentary film featuring her students, she said. “The storyline would be the impact of school to work programs on our future workforce.” Krull would like to meet actress Betty White. “I want to meet her because I hope to be that spunky, funny, and alive when I’m her age,” she said.

Krull also has a passion for photography. She has taken many wedding photos, senior portraits and family pictures throughout the community. Jewelry provided by Rummele’s Fine Jewelry & Gifts.

Lauson would pick Lauren Conrad to play the role of her in a movie. “She has a fun personality and has a jewelry, clothing and shoe line,” she said.

Sole Proprietor of Modern by Megean Contemporary Jewelry

Lauson would like to meet actress Lauren Bacall and discuss the actors and actresses she’s worked with and known. “I would also like to ask her if I could take a peek at all of her jewelry and clothes that she has worn during her lifetime,” Lauson said. When not working, Lauson enjoys visiting her cabin, taking motorcycle rides, shopping, visiting with family and friends, cooking, and designing jewelry.

Megean Lauson is a professional business woman who has successfully started her own business, proving that dreams can come true with strong willpower, hard work, dedication and determination.

Lauson is a member of The Chamber of Manitowoc County, Sail Young Professionals of Manitowoc County, Manitowoc Area Visitor and Convention Bureau and Manitowoc City Center Association, which develops and sponsors local events in the historic downtown area.

She is the sole proprietor of Modern by Megean Contemporary Jewelry. The business was developed on April 18, 2008, and opened its doors in downtown Manitowoc on July 1, 2008. It has been named “best jewelry store” of 2010 and 2011 and also “best overall customer service.”

She participated in Sail’s Connecting Young Professionals scavenger hunts and the Women in Business series as a panel member. The panel of featured women entrepreneurs discussed their business start-up experiences. She also has participated in the Service League’s annual Holiday on the Lakeshore for the past four years.

Lauson is a gemologist and is pursuing a graduate gemology degree from the Gemological Institute of America. She has received diplomas for diamonds and diamond grading, diamond essentials, colored stones and colored stone essentials. She also has an associate’s degree in art history from the University of Wisconsin-Manitowoc and has taken business and marketing courses at Northeast Wisconsin Technical College.

You can see Lauson at Manitowoc’s Farmers Market where she meets many people from the community. “It’s nice to see local artisan and crafters being involved with the community. The market creates a family oriented environment where family and friends can celebrate through Wisconsin-grown produce, foods, arts and crafts.”

She was born and raised in Manitowoc County and has made many business connections and plans to continue to network and build strong relations. Lauson stays actively involved in local organizations to better her business and gain experience. “I believe that the more knowledge one can obtain from experienced business owners is the best way to become a success,” she said.

She also hosts an event for the Domestic Violence Center, raising money and donations to support children in need. “I feel privileged to be able to give back to my community and support local causes,” said Lauson. She plans to continue to be committed and involved with local organizations and clubs, supporting local business and the improvement of the Eighth Street historic downtown. “I feel that in order to make a difference, one must get involved and speak their opinion. If more people speak their mind, it will give local residents something to get excited about and in time, bring more people to Manitowoc and strengthen our community as a whole,” said Lauson. She is married to Travis Lauson.

Musial would choose Carrie Underwood to star as her on the big screen. “She is a kind-hearted, genuine person,” Musial said. “She is determined for success and never forgets where she came from.”

Musial Professional Collection Specialist / Client Performance Leader, Americollect Sarah Musial started her working career as a certified nursing assistant, but to allow the single mom more time with her daughter, she decided to pursue a new career, which has led her to Americollect. She has become certified as a Professional Collection specialist through ACA International and also is a Client Performance leader. Some of Musial’s responsibilities include directing and supporting the legal team collectors while working closely with attorneys and assisting with training new members. She is currently working on becoming a Certified Patient Account technician through the American Association of Healthcare Administrative Management to better educate consumers on insurance processes. Musial also is a Sail committee member and the former chairperson of Sail’s programming committee. “Sail is an exciting organization to be a part of and has opened many networking opportunities for me to grow as a young professional,” she said. In the future, Musial would like to become a mentor for Lakeshore Community Action Program and get involved with Habitat for Humanity. “Being a part of a community doesn’t just mean living there, but also being involved to make it a better place to live for everyone,” said Musial. During the past several years, she has co-chaired fundraising events at Americollect that support Big Brothers Big Sisters, The March of Dimes, and breast cancer awareness. “Being involved in fundraising is a great way to improve the quality of life for many members of our community,” she noted. Musial believes educating children doesn’t just mean

sending them to school every day but includes parents getting involved also. She has worked the lunch line, served on the transition committee for St. Francis of Assisi schools and is the treasurer for the Future Lady Ships basketball program. She has also recently joined the Parents in Action at St. Francis Middle School. “Children whose parents are involved have a better chance to succeed,” she said. Musial’s personal goals and dreams are to become a homeowner within the next year, establish a college fund for her 11-yearold daughter Massendra, and continue her education. Professionally, she hopes to educate consumers she works with in order to improve their quality of life, mentor new employees to make their careers successful and participate in training opportunities to make her a stronger leader. Musial notes, “I’m sure you can tell by now that work and community are very important to me, but family and friends are important, too. On weekends, you will typically find me at sporting events for my daughter, up north with family, or just hanging out with friends.”

“One of my favorite movies of all times would be ‘Dirty Dancing,’” Musial confesses. “My mom and I used to rewind and play the ending over and over again.” “I love spending weekends in Door County, biking, going to Packer games and spending time with family and friends,” Musial said. Among Musial’s musical preferences you’ll find: Adele, Maroon 5, Kelly Clarkson, Bruno Mars and Sugarland.

She adds, “My greatest accomplishment in life is being a mother. Being a single mom has been difficult, but my daughter has made every moment worth all the hard work and sacrifice.” Jewelry provided by Rummele’s Fine Jewelry & Gifts.

“‘Caddyshack’ is always a classic to watch,” Schmitz said.

Schmitz would pick Dierks Bentley to star in a movie of his life “because I have been told numerous times he looks like me,” he said.

When watching a movie, peanuts, popcorn and Mike and Ikes serve as Schmitz’s snack trifecta. The first person Schmitz would thank in his Oscar acceptance speech would be his father. “He was a very instrumental part of my life growing up. He was a great role model and somebody who led by example,” Schmitz said.

Derek

Schmitz Community Employment Services Coordinator, Holiday House of Manitowoc County, Inc. Derek Schmitz sees his life as one of service and as an advocate for individuals with disabilities. He moved to Manitowoc in the summer of 2008 after he received his master’s degree from the University of Wisconsin-Stout in vocational rehabilitation counseling. He has been employed at Holiday House of Manitowoc County, Inc. for three years. During that time, he was promoted from case manager to the community employment services coordinator. Schmitz has networked professionally by attending various Chamber events such as Sail, Young Professionals of Manitowoc County, and has participated in multiple fundraisers including the YMCA annual fundraiser and raising bail for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. He also has volunteered to help coach 5th grade football the last two years for the Chiefs youth football program. Schmitz graduated from The Chamber of Manitowoc County Leadership Program in 2011. His group chose Holiday House to raise money for and designed a flower garden for the Brewer Building, which will be converted into Holiday House’s new Day Services Facility. He has been working on educating local business leaders about hiring people with disabilities. “I believe education is essential for our program to be successful,” said Schmitz.

Holiday House Congratulates Derek Schmitz, Community Employment Services Coordinator, on being chosen as one of Sails’ Future 15 Young Sail’s Professionals!

FUTURE

For the last year and a half, he and a co-worker have been implementing a program called, Project Breaking Walls, which has been successful in reaching a number of influential people in Manitowoc County. “The program’s main focus is to erase the myths of hiring people with disabilities and trying to get the message across that the individuals we work with have more similarities than differences,” said Schmitz. The partnerships that have been created with the businesses and community leaders have enriched the lives of dozens of people with disabilities, he noted. Part of Schmitz’s job is to improve the quality of life for individuals he provides services for. “Each person I assist with finding employment has seen their quality of life improved,” he said. In addition to the work he does at Holiday House, Schmitz also spends time with an individual two nights a week going to the YMCA or going for walks on the bike trail. “Not only has his quality of life improved by participating in community events, but everyone who has had the opportunity to meet this young man has gained value from knowing him, including myself,” said Schmitz. He plans to continue working with and advocating for individuals who have disabilities, as well as promoting Holiday House and all the services it provides for the community by continuing to be active with various organizations in Manitowoc County. “My long-term goal would be to change minds through education and have people see the personality of individuals and not the disability,” he said.

Sonnemann would like to meet a media icon. “(Oprah) has one of the most amazing stories; she became the most influential woman in modern times with the cards stacked against her,” Sonnemann said.

Amy

Sonnemann

A quote from “The Wizard of Oz” best describes Sonnemann, she said. “‘There’s no place like home.’ … At the end of the day, being at home with family is what’s most important.”

Vice President of Lending, UnitedOne Credit Union Amy Sonnemann, the vice president of lending at UnitedOne Credit Union, thoroughly enjoys her job because she is able to make a difference in the lives of others. She has been with UnitedOne for 14 years, having earned a master’s degree in management and organizational behavior and a bachelor’s degree in management, both from Silver Lake College. She also has an associate degree in finance from Lakeshore Technical College. Sonnemann works directly with staff to find out what their goals and aspirations are. “It’s very fulfilling to watch employees grow and develop to achieve their own personal goals, which often includes career advancement,” she noted. Along with assisting members to better their financial lives, she also strives to contribute to the betterment of the community. In 2005, she started a not-for profit organization called Bright Adventures, which was inspired by her younger brother, Justin, who has Down’s syndrome. The group’s mission is to help enrich the lives of developmentally disabled individuals in Manitowoc County including providing Christmas gifts to make their holidays a little brighter with muchneeded items. In addition, the group has worked with Manitowoc County Human Services and the Aging Resource Center when needs have come up unexpectedly as well, such as helping those waiting for Social Security Disability who need groceries and toiletries. Sonnemann also contributes money each paycheck to the United Way, bowls each year in the Big Brothers

Big Sisters Bowl-a-thon and participates in special fundraisers at work for the Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin. She also has assisted with functions for the Association for the Developmentally Disabled and worked the auction during the Lakeshore Weekend for Kids event. She grew up in Manitowoc and attended all Manitowoc County schools. Sonnemann decided to live here, build her career in the Lakeshore area and raise her family here. She and her husband, Kevin, have been married for eight years and have two children — Ava, 5, and Braeden, 2.

“If I was able to choose who would star in a movie of my life, I would want Reese Witherspoon to be the actress. I admire Reese for being able to successfully balance being a mom and having a successful career,” Sonnemann said.

Sonnemann said Manitowoc County has a lot to offer including great options for postsecondary education, entertainment and “great community groups that help improve quality of life for a wide variety of people, such as Holiday House, Domestic Violence Center, United Way, Big Brothers Big Sisters and, of course, The Chamber of Manitowoc County. We really have a great community that I’m proud to call home.”

“I would really like to take a family vacation to Disney World,” Sonnemann said. “My husband, Kevin, and I have never been there.”

“As for the future, my goal is to continue learning from my peers and co-workers, while staying abreast of industry regulatory changes and trends so that I can best serve our members and help the credit union achieve greater levels of success,” she said. “Last, but not least, a goal of mine is to work with my husband to grow and develop our children into independent, responsible and happy adults.” Jewelry provided by Inman Jewelers.

Thanks Amy for helping us keep up the pace with our community’s future!

htrnews.com | Nov. 2011 “I’m really fond of Larry David. He has an unusual sense of humor and I think he would be hilarious to hang out with,” Spaulding said.

“I am in LOVE with the Caribbean — the beautiful weather, scenery and change in perspective have a peaceful serenity that is something I crave,” Spaulding said.

President, Central Bark Doggy Daycare Adrianne Spaulding, president of Central Bark Doggy Daycare in Manitowoc, believes the service provided by her and her staff has impacted the Lakeshore community on a variety of levels. Central Bark opened its doors on March 12, 2008, just a few short months before the economy took a downward spiral. “It has been an incredibly difficult ride. Yet through it all, we have weathered the storm,” Spaulding said. In the past three and a half years, she noted they have had countless opportunities to turn lives around for both people and pets alike. To her clients, dogs are viewed like family members, deserving of a great deal of respect and compassion. Central Bark looks at each dog as an individual, tailoring a program to work with the family’s personal goals. The business has had a direct, positive impact on shelter and/or homeless pets by building relationships with local shelters and rescues. Central Bark staff has taken the resources necessary to build trust within dogs who have been severely abused or neglected. This enables them to receive proper care and grooming, attend obedience classes, and participate in family life with their pet parents.

“Occasionally, the scope of the care necessary is beyond what Central Bark can deliver and I’ve used both my personal and professional connections to coordinate the best care possible for the dogs who need it, keeping in communication with the parents of those pets despite the fact that they aren’t a client,” said Spaulding. She has coordinated and hosted a number of community outreach opportunities onsite at Central Bark or as a guest speaker at community events. She and her staff provide tours and advocate/awareness opportunities for Holiday House, Girl Scouts, independent youth programs, Manitowoc city and county police departments, crime prevention, and K9 units. “In very difficult and desperate times, my staff has risen to the challenge to do whatever it takes for the dog. I’m so honored and proud of them that I get emotional when I speak about it. We feel passionately about what we are doing,” she said. Spaulding has made it her personal mission to advocate for the dog. It is her goal to grow the company to not only be the premiere location in pet care, but as a choice employer, recruiting and retaining talent within the Lakeshore area “so driven by internal motives that together, we can move mountains.” Spaulding is the only child of Debra and Karl Walesh from Two Rivers and has a 2-year-old son named Breck. She also has two dogs, a Pit Bull named, Oskar, and a Yorkie named, Dorsi, as well as a cat named, Friskie. Her boyfriend is Dale “DJ” Greenwood Jr. from Two Rivers who has three sons: Collin, Austin and Tanner.

If Spaulding were to select the star who would portray her on the big screen, she’d choose Catherine Zeta-Jones. “She can be silly, sassy and serious. Just as I am,” Spaulding noted.

Wachowski Program Coordinator for the Look Ahead Lakers Program, Silver Lake College Tara Wachowski wants to add her own enthusiastic mark and positively influence the growth, prosperity and quality of life in Manitowoc County. She graduated from Silver Lake College in 2010 and then continued her career with the college, accepting a position as program coordinator for the Look Ahead Lakers Program. Look Ahead Lakers is a college-access program that pairs college students with at-risk fifth graders through high school students to increase academic skills, high school graduation rates, and application to post-secondary educational institutions. The program benefits the community in two ways. First, it provides Silver Lake College students the opportunity to become strong, communityminded leaders who are ready for the workforce. Second, it increases the chances for younger students to succeed in high school and go on to higher education. “The program is literally changing the way the college and community are preparing students for the future,” said Wachowski. Look Ahead Lakers was launched in March of 2011 with 127 fifth-grade and 40 Silver Lake College student participants. Since March, they have doubled the program and will reach well over 250 elementary students and 70 SLC students during the 2011-12 school year, Wachowski predicts. In addition to her work for Silver Lake College, Wachowski is also active in the community. Earning her Bachelor of Arts in Studio Art, she continues to stay connected with the arts and use her talents to improve the quality of life for Manitowoc County. She volunteers as the Two Rivers City Hall art director. Through this program, she is able to

promote talented local artists in the community and advocate for the arts as a viable means to promote economic growth. She also is involved with the Spirit of the Rivers project and Two Rivers Sunrise Optimist Club’s Empty Bowls Committee by helping both programs with computer graphic work. The Spirit of the Rivers project is a monument currently being created for the Lake Michigan shoreline, which depicts Manitowoc County’s Native American history. Empty Bowls was a fundraiser benefiting Two Rivers Ecumenical Pantry, which involved the community in creating hand-painted ceramic bowls used for a soup and bread meal fundraiser in October. Wachowski’s goal is to complete a master’s degree in art education within the next three years. “An artist at heart with a love of education and learning, I aim to secure an arts education director position within the next three to five years. This will allow me to continue to positively influence the community for years to come, inspire a love of learning with a younger generation, and explore and pass on my passion for the arts.”

Wachowski lives by a quote from Willy Wonka in “Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory”: “Invention, my dear friends, is 93 percent perspiration, 6 percent electricity, 4 percent evaporation, and 2 percent butterscotch ripple.” Wachowki’s favorite movie is “Almost Famous.” “I love the music and the acting,” she said.

Wachowski would take a trip to Thailand if she had the chance. “I’d love to experience the floating markets, visit Buddhist temples, take in the beautiful scenery and animal life, and of course, sample as many Thai dishes as possible,” she said.

Wachowski has a 10-year-old son, Devin Wachowski, and her “best friend and partner” is Marshall Fanslau. Jewelry provided by Inman Jewelers.
