Guidelines for concussion management in community football The AFL has released its updated guidelines for the management of concussion in Australian football at all levels of the game outside of the AFL and AFLW competitions for 2021. The AFL Outer East commission endorses these guidelines, which will be introduced effective immediately across all competitions, football and netball. Any player who suffered a concussion on the weekend must enter concussion protocols. In considering the best practice management of sport-related concussion, the evidence-based guidelines have been developed by leading medical professionals and put the health and safety of state-league and community footballers first. Under the guidelines, there is a clear process to be followed for players who have suffered a concussion to return to play, which includes a period of rest, symptom-limited activity, gradual increase in physical activity and a medical clearance prior to fullcontact training.

The guidelines also outline the process for clubs and players to follow when someone is suspected of having suffered a concussion. In following these guidelines, the minimum timeframe in which a player can return to play in community football is on the twelfth day after the day on which the concussion was suffered, based on successfully completing the phases to return to play following a concussion and receiving a medical clearance as outlined in the guidelines. Given the challenges and limitations in assessing recovery, including a lack of baseline testing and a medical doctor to oversee each stage of the graded return to football following concussion in community football, a more conservative approach may be required regarding return to play in a community football setting.

The timeframe for return to play is likely to be longer in children and adolescents, where a more conservative approach is important as it is recognised that recovery from concussion tends to be slower in this group. In general, children and adolescents (aged 5-17) require a more conservative approach from adults because their brains are developing. As such, the priority is not just player welfare and return to sport, but a critical element is return to school and learning. Medical professionals will ultimately determine when a player is ready to return to full-contact training and playing. Whilst there has been some focus recently on evolving diagnostic tools such as ophthalmic tracking (the further research of which the AFL supports), the guidelines make it very clear that all post-concussion return to play decisions must be undertaken with the input of a medical professional.

From the chair Eye scan tools may be a useful tool to add objective information to the concussion assessment (both in diagnosis and/or monitoring return to play)..

The existing guidelines were reviewed and the current updated version for community football has been prepared by the AFL’s Chief Medical Officer Peter Harcourt and Deputy Chief However, further scientific Medical Officer Michael research is required to Makdissi. assess the potential of this The consultative process in tool and it should not be the development of these used in isolation and a thorough assessment by a guidelines included medical doctor is required meeting with other medical for diagnosis or return to experts and representatives of state play decisions. bodies.

The AFL-approved concussion management app HeadCheck at www.headcheck.com.au should be utilised to recognise and assist in the management of any suspected concussion for both adults and children.

VALE CHERYL GROEN AFL Outer East is deeply saddened tonight with the tragic news of the passing of much loved Seville Football Netball Club trainer Cheryl Groen.

Cheryl was a magnificent servant of the Seville Football Netball club and her sudden passing is being felt by the entire AFL Outer East Community at this time.

Our thoughts are with the Seville Football Netball Club, the Seville community, her husband Will and Cheryl’s family and friends during this difficult time.

Fleer makes impact during Community Umpiring Week Lachlan Shaw The Community Umpiring Week initiative introduced by the AFL took place last weekend, with a 2020 AFL Grand Final umpire in attendance to mark the occasion. Craig Fleer officiated the Belgrave vs Healesville match at Belgrave Recreation Reserve on Sunday with junior umpire Sam Gebert, which proved invaluable for his development. Stepping back into community umpiring for the first time since entering the discipline at grassroots level, Fleer was noted for having really enjoyed the experience and loved the sense of community spirit that was seen at the Belgrave precinct. Reflecting on the match and Community Umpiring Week, Operations Coordinator Sebastian Mueller-Schmuki, who oversees the umpiring group, was pleased with Fleer’s involvement with the AFL Outer East

umpiring group saying his contribution across the week was beneficial for the football umpiring group. “It was fantastic to have an AFL umpire of the calibre of Craig Fleer come along and run a junior match with one of our young umpires over the weekend,” he said. “Further to this, it was a great opportunity for Sam to run with someone of Craig’s experience and I think he learnt a lot from it. “Throughout the match, Craig really demonstrated the key elements needed to be a good umpire such as match management, clear signals and a loud whistle and I am really glad that Sam was able to benefit from this.” In addition to umpiring with Gebert on Sunday, Fleer also made an appearance at umpire training in the lead up to the weekend, introducing himself to all umpires in the room and getting to know them.

During the session, Fleer passed on all of his knowledge and advice to the Outer East umpires, which they were appreciative of and benefitted greatly from. “Fleers presence at training last week was really good for our umpires as they mingled with him and asked about his experiences at all levels of umpiring, while also sharing their own experiences they’ve endured through their umpiring journey,” he mentioned. “Overall, I am really pleased with the success of Community Umpiring Week as it was really beneficial for the umpiring group in the AFL Outer East.”
