OUTER EAST JUNIOR SCORECARDS

Strong start showing encouraging signs for ROC ROC Netball Club are shaping up for a great year ahead on the court, with all four of their sides getting two wins on the board to start the season. In their matches against Berwick Springs over the weekend, the A, B, C and D grade teams all won by 51, 65, 38 and 41 points. Club President Laura Quinn was pleased with the efforts of her players and the club so far, hoping that the strong start will go a long way toward shaping the season for the Kangaroos. “It’s the perfect start for us,” Quinn said. “We are pleased with how we have started off the season and hopefully this will continue.” Stressing that the teams success has been the result of hard work and effort which has gone into the club, Quinn did however mention one player who was a standout from the A grade side over the weekend, citing an improved game plan for the young netballer.

“Keeley Burgmann has stepped up despite the fact she is so young,” Quinn explained. “She is playing a very mature netball game.” The long 18-month break in competitive sport now has the Officer netball community out and enjoying their sport again. Good spectator numbers have graced the courts in support of the Kangaroos since the season began, with supporters enjoying the fact they are able to come along and watch their favourite sports again. As president, Quinn is pleased with the position which her club is in at the moment, knowing there are four competitive sides who are able to take on their opposition and put early wins on the board.

However, she is also aware that the Kangaroos must not get comfortable with the way things have been going. “We need to continue to improve and not get complacent by making sure we are hitting our goals,” she said. “The initial aim this season for us as club is for all four of our sides to qualify for finals and we’ll see what happens on the other side of that.” ROC will take on Mount Evelyn this weekend at Mount Evelyn Recreation Reserve as they attempt to make it three in a row across all their teams.

Premier Division Round 1 Recap Doveton started off their new season in premier division with a three-point win over Wandin at Robinson Reserve. Unfurling their 2019 division one premiership flag before the match, the Doves fought a tough game against their rivals, with the victory coming as a result of the Bulldogs inability to kick straight in front of goal. The final scores were 9.6-60 to 7.15-57. Jake Mullen was a sharp shooter for his side with four goals for the afternoon.

Beaconsfield gave Narre Warren an early loss in a physical game between the two rivals, recording a 46point victory at Holm Park. Inaccurate kicking in front of goal cost the Magpies dearly, with the final score being 13.12-90 to 5.14-44. Eagles captain Jake Bowd got his season off to a great start in front of goal, booting six majors to lead his side home. Brandon White, Nick Battle, Jafar Occa, Jamie Plumridge and Damien Johnston were the other best players to feature for the winners.

The Outer East ‘Match of the Day’ was struck with wild weather throughout the game, with heavy rain and fog making the conditions difficult for all players at Olinda Recreation Reserve. Despite this, Olinda-Ferny Creek were still able to come away with the win over Upwey Tecoma with the final scores being 12.15-87 to 6.743. Nick Keegan booted four goals for the Bloods while Ben Hinton kicked three at the other end of the ground for the Tigers.

Cranbourne took control of their match against Woori Yallock running out with a nine-goal in the second half, running away from Woori once the rain kicked in to start the season with a statement. Marc Holt booted six goals for the Eagles, while brothers Ben and Zac Monkhorst shared five goals between them to provide some highlight in the disappointing game for the home side. The final score was 16.16-112 to 8.1058.

Lachlan Shaw Round two of the women’s competition saw a milestone event at Olinda Recreation Reserve in the division two ranks, with Olinda Ferny Creek scoring their first home win in just their second match ever as a football side. Facing off against Seville/Woori Yallock, the Bloods had control of the match right from the start, eventually finishing off with a 54-point victory. The final score was 9.7-61 to 1.1-7.

Senior coach Simon Gilson was pleased with his side’s efforts over the weekend, citing continuous improvement in their abilities have contributed to the success.

“It was fantastic, the girls have been working really hard to improve themselves and their understanding of the game, which meant that we were able to put it to good use and it all pulled off for us,” Gilson said. Captain Maddi Collins led from the front all day, with her tough approach to the football, bravery and skilfulness providing her team with the inspiration to get the win.

The lead-up to the first win for the women’s side is the result of hard work and preparation up to round one, with a clear emphasis on running and keeping up a strong work rate in all areas of the ground.

Olinda women’s side gets first strike in second ever match

The energy levels seen in all members of the team up to this point have been phenomenal, with players showing a great level of enthusiasm and support for each other. “We’ve got really good numbers and a great variety in age too with players ranging from the age of 15 up to their 40’s,” Gilson explained.

“So, having that environment has been fantastic for the team and with the great sense of community they’ve developed in such a short time, it’s certainly gone a long way towards getting that win where they’re supporting and trying to do the best for each other.” Great crowd numbers have been present at both matches so far, ensuring the girls have felt well supported in their journey to date. The goals for the remainder of the season for the women’s side are simple, with a continuation to learn the game and no expectation on results in the first half of the season allows the side to continue having fun together and building a culture around women’s football for the club. From a game perspective, it’s around skills in addition to running and work rate.

While wins are a bonus for the club, the focus is to continue learning, developing and working together to make the collective side a better outfit. Gilson was appreciative of his players and members of the Olinda Ferny Creek Football Netball Club for their efforts to date. “I would like to thank the girls for their hard work and the club for forging ahead with having a womens side this year as it was the right opportunity to do so,” he said. "Helen Wositzky, who is an organiser at the club has been phenomenal, but Sasha Sullivan and Bruce Wilson have also been instrumental in helping to put it all together as well.”

The Olinda Ferny Creek women’s team will now take on bottom placed Thornton Eildon back at Olinda Recreation Reserve in their round 3 clash on Saturday 1 May. Olinda Ferny Creek Football Netball Club

Strong start to season accompanies completion of Alexandra FNC building project

An exciting period is approaching for the Alexandra Football Netball Club, with a great start to the season seeing the Rebels win both games to sit on top of the ATC Traffic Division Two ladder.

Victories against Yarra Glen and Broadford across the seniors and reserves divisions, including a massive 161-point victory for the senior team over the weekend, has the Rebels high on confidence and upbeat about the possibilities for the 2021 season.

The forward line put on a show with Josef Builder, James Box, Jason Degabriele and Ben Jack all sharing 21 goals between them.

Club President Ray Steyger was pleased with how his football sides are shaping up so far and is excited to have the wider community get behind the Rebels charge this season.

“It’s great to get off to a good start, we’ve got a mix of new players but also some young kids who have come through from our junior team,” Steyger said.

“It’s quite a blend but it’s certainly very exciting, the community are getting behind the club and are excited to have two wins and be sitting on top of the ladder.”

With players residing in Melbourne and throughout the Alexandra region, weekday training is separated into two groups, with the Melbournebased players all training at an inner-city location while those local to the club train at the Alexandra Showgrounds precinct with the Under 17’s team.

Players from Melbourne are in regular contact with the senior coach to ensure they receive the same coaching messages as those training at the Rebels home ground, however, the entire playing group usually aim to train together once a month so they get the chance to complete training drills together and engage in the dialogue that is not always covered when it’s carried out virtually.

The Rebels have a new senior coach on board this season, with Nick Wal promoted from the assistant coaching role he held for the past two years.

Wal has been impressive with regard to his communication with the players, both on field and off field.

His authoritive approach to the club has seen him make his mark on matters concerning to code of conduct and other related subjects which has had positive effects on the playing group.

Off the field, the Rebels are in the final phase of a redevelopment to its outdated precinct which is scheduled to be used from early June.

With a project of this nature planned for 15 years, money put aside by the club in addition to grants from the Victorian government, have enabled Alexandra to go ahead with the various building projects which are targeted to not only benefit the club, but the wider community.

Stage one of the build incorporated two new netball courts as well as upgrades to lighting and other infrastructure.

Stage two features a new building situated adjacent to the netball area which will also supply changerooms, showers, toilets and other associated items.

Finally, stages three and four is the completion of the development which includes an upgrade of power for the reserve, new lighting for the oval and the construction of the multipurpose community facility. The work is due for completion in early June with players to start using the new facility immediately.

However, unforeseen costs as a result of 2017 costings, three years before construction commenced, means the club needs to find a further $200,000 to complete the project.

In an effort to find the funding needed, the project has been registered with the Australian Sports Foundation where tax deductable donations can be made. The completion of the project will be a highlight for Steyger, with 2021 marking his 25th year as club president in addition to a further three years as senior vice president prior to this. “The Alexandra Football Netball Club and the wider community will really benefit from this facility once it’s ready, it will be here for a long time to come,” he explained. “Our club has a really tight culture where everyone gets along and we hold regular functions for our members, so the upgrades are exactly what we need.” If you would like to make a donation to fund the completion of the development works at Alexandra Football Netball Club, head to https://bit.ly/3gLHmuM
