We love to know our readers hang on to previous copies but when you move or find that they’re taking up too much space, drop them down to the recycling bins in the car park off the Esplanade. hristmas seems but a distant memory as we sign off our first edition of the year. By now you should be rested and hopefully over the January blues. At Gallery we like to hibernate away, travel, get some rest and make sure we’re rearing to go for the year before he come out of the gates. It’s even sunny today... We’ve had some changes over the winter months and Gallery now has some new team members and a new management structure in Guernsey. I’m not trying to write a press release but suffice to say it’s a bunch of new and highly motivated people that are ready to rock and roll with Guernsey’s style magazine for ‘15. You’ll notice the property section is one of the first to get some treatment. Using Gallery’s colour goodness, we’ve upped the section to 16 pages of property for sale and rent along with a spattering of profiles and interiors features. If you’re looking to find a place, it’s a great place to start. Turn to page 63 to learn more. We’ve been very lucky this month with new contributors bringing some great ontheme ideas. To fit with ‘pairs’ it was great to meet twins that play some seriously good table tennis (p.92). We also managed to track down some local heroes; you may have seen the twin dressing sisters around? Meet them on page 20.

Social networking shizzle Be our friend and we’ll tell you secrets

We’ve got date destinations, a fab two seater and fashion for you and your respective other that considers this month’s calendar date of note. Grab something from instaglam (p.49) and head out for a sundae treat (p.58). Gallery will be evolving further next month. See you then. BD

WORDS Grace Ryan ILLUSTRATION Liam Nunn

It’s February, and Valentine’s day is approaching fast. If anything, it’s approaching too fast, and needs to pause, take a deep breath and concentrate on something less sexy, like the mental image of its grandmother tenderising a pork chop. For lovers Feb 14th promises 24 hours of unbridled passion, but not everybody is lucky enough to come home from work to 13 red roses and a spanking. I’m going to ask you to take a moment out from compiling an R Kelly playlist and ordering furry handcuffs off the internet to think of those people less fortunate than yourselves. I don’t mean people suffering through disease or civil war, but the true forgotten victims of Saint Valentine: single celebrities.

It just breaks my heart. They are so beautiful, so talented, but somehow can’t find a partner and will probably spend Valentine’s day curled up with a copy of 50 Shades and a dented box of Milk Tray chocolates bought from the late night garage. All these lonely superstars have to console themselves is fantastic wealth, the option of never working again and the opportunity to have wanton, no-strings rumpy pumpy with one or more of their millions of adoring fans. It must be awful.

Well, I have a heart, and it bleeds for them. I simply cannot bear to live in a world where a lonely Justin Bieber cries himself to sleep, and so have taken matters into my own hands to nominate a short list of perfect celebrity unions. Perhaps a copy of this magazine will find its way to cupid, the arrows of desire will fly and romance will blossom for these lonely A-listers? If true love fails, there’s at least the chance of some pretty steamy sex tapes the next time the North Korean hackers strike.

RUSSELL BRAND & KATIE PRICE Why haven’t they found love? In the time taken for this issue to go to print the lovely Ms Price has probably fallen head-over-spike-heels in love, popped out another two children, fallen out with the father and is at this moment composing a withering all-caps tweet about the size of his Peter Andre. Russell Brand is finding it hard to juggle a new career (speaking out against wealth, soundbites and celebrity) with a crippling addiction to these very same things. Ooh, Mr Winkie! Why they would be perfect for each other: Both are loud, narcissistic selfpublicists with big hair and a love-hate relationship with tabloid newspapers. A mutual history of nudity, partying and an extravagant ‘dream wedding’ that quickly ended in tears. Although both are successful authors, Katie has read fewer books than she has written and is unlikely to step on hubby’s toes in that respect. Based on his previous relationships, Brand should hopefully manage to remember her name and won’t need to get new initials engraved on his wedding band. They would be 2015’s: Kim Kardashian (buxom, wealthy, slightly dim, reality/sex tape star) and Kanye West (egocentric, jewellery, messiah complex). How their kids would turn out: Born with a suntan and their own section in the Sun’s gossip column.

BORIS JOHNSON & KATY PERRY

TOM CRUISE & GWYNETH PALTROW

Why haven’t they found love? Boris is often accused of being a serial philanderer who succeeds in life through charm and guile rather than commitment or consistency. Katy Perry was married briefly to Russell Brand, who is nothing like Boris whatsoever - because Boris has his own money and can speak latin.

Why haven’t they found love? One is the creepy public face of a celebrity lifestyle cult, the other took his shirt off in Top Gun.

Why they would be perfect for each other: Could share funny stories about grand public entrances gone wrong, wardrobe malfunctions and comedy gaffes. Both like a drink or ten, appearing in front of crowds and bonking a lot.

Why they would be perfect for each other: Scientology either confuses or bores mentally competent people, but Gwyneth has years of practice in remaining conscious during Coldplay’s gigs. There’s a distinct possibility that one or both of them was replaced with an android some time in the 1990s and the public haven’t noticed. They would be 2015’s: Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes.

How their kids would turn out: wild-haired, ambitious, like a firework.

How their kids would turn out: leaders of an organically-nourished master race able to suck donations from your bank account with powerful psychic rays. Taller than you because their lawyers have sued your legs away below the knees.

KATIE HOPKINS & THE ALIEN

MILEY CYRUS & JUSTIN BIEBER

Why haven’t they found love? Both are vicious, spiteful alpha predators incapable of empathy or weakness. Can only be truly stopped by being burned with a flamethrower and then ejected into the cold vacuum of space.

Why haven’t they found love? Bred in vats on Disney’s facility for new child stars, neither was raised to comprehend basic human morality before being gifted with fantastic wealth and a pet monkey. Each is a modern-day Frankenstein’s monster: horrifying, made of spare parts, but desperate only to be loved.

They would be 2015’s: if you asked them, they’d say John F and Jackie Kennedy, but more likely to be Mick Jagger and Jerry Hall.

Why they would be perfect for each other: both have blood of acid and wallpaper their nests with the still-living bodies of their prey. The Alien could teach Katie the novel concept that sometimes your goals can be accomplished by simply keeping quiet for a few minutes, and Katie could show The Alien how to sow terror through the medium of Twitter. They would be 2015’s: worst nightmare - a remorseless enemy that either destroys you by pouncing from air vents, or by constantly appearing as a talking head on TV programmes, breaking your will to live with its corrosive opinions.

Why they would be perfect for each other: no normal person could possibly understand somebody who had an entourage when most of us were lucky to have a Playmobil garage set, let alone a pet monkey. They would be 2015’s: somewhere between Bonnie and Clyde, Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown or The Krankies. How their kids would turn out: too frightening to contemplate, although hope exists that Disney deliberately engineered this strain as sterile, like the replicants from Blade Runner.

How their kids would turn out: of a mucus-encrusted egg, and then bursting out of your chest cavity. Nuke the site from orbit, it’s the only way to be sure.

It’s said that “the road to hell is paved with good intentions” - never is this more depressingly true than midway through the month of February. It’s easy to commit to the idea of a punishing diet when you’re collapsed on the couch on December 27th, worrying about whether death by gout will take you down before dad has to use his new power washer to break up a solid mass of mince pie blocking your colon. It’s nothing to swear off the drink on January 2nd, when it feels like somebody has been dragging your liver behind a truck, but the idea becomes less attractive the longer you’ve been back at work. Your liver still looks like an Eastenders villain, but you need the prospect of sweet boozy oblivion to prevent you from throttling your boss with a length of network cable. Don’t even get me started on the gym, which seems like a good idea until you realise that the

You promised on January 1st: never to smoke cigarettes again. Progress in the last month: four smokeless days climbing the walls, barking at family members like a Rottweiler with toothache and enduring vivid hallucinations of 20 Benson crawling across the ceiling like the baby from Trainspotting. Broke down one afternoon, found yourself eating handfuls of nicotine gum and hunting a dirty contact buzz by sucking in the fetid smog that hovers around pub ashtrays. A more realistic target: aim to switch to an e-cigarette. Either get the supermarket kind, which smashes your addiction to nicotine by costing as much as a packet of fags but breaking after a few hours, or the fancy provaper model from the internet. It destroys the social pleasure of smoking by forcing people to avoid you in case they get another 40 minute lecture about why you went for a pineapple-sprout 12mg blend over one that tastes like bubblegum and causes brain damage in lab rats.

You promised on January 1st: to start that arts & crafts project you dreamed up as a way to prove that years of telly and lager haven’t killed off the creative spirit of your younger self. Progress in the last month: bought a book on knitting/sewing/flower arranging from Amazon, registered accounts on Etsy and Pinterest and started telling people about all the cool stuff you’re going to make (them buy). Also purchased some bafflingly expensive craft materials and spent an hour unwrapping a single ball of wool. A more realistic target: start with drawing moustaches on people in magazines, step up to colouring books and biro desk doodles after a week or two. Instead of upcycling a wedding dress and pricing it at £900 on Etsy, cut the sleeves off a few T shirts and make a puppet out of an old sock.

BECAUSE QUALITY MATTERS

combination of dreadful music and shirtless meatheads everywhere means that you’ve just paid £400 for a season ticket to the worst nightclub in Spain. If you don’t want to spend the rest of 2015 feeling like an abject failure, I recommend that you give yourself a do-over and reset your resolutions to something a touch more manageable. Think of it as an investment in your self-confidence. If you can get through 2015 without drinking snakebite every lunchtime or having a bacon heart attack you might stand a better chance of making 2016 your year as a teetotal vegan with more muscles than the rugby club shower.

You promised on January 1st: to read Moby Dick, War and Peace or some other cultural doorstop with more intellectual cred than the Dan Brown novels and TV listings magazines that are your only regular contact with the written word. Progress in the last month: you bought at least one novel, read five pages before falling asleep and this article is the only thing you’ve read since that isn’t the instructions on a packet of Super Noodles. A more realistic target: the secret is that nobody really reads War and Peace because it’s impossible to remember everybody’s names. Moby Dick is available as a pretty decent audiobook, and it’s easy to remember the characters because one has a peg leg and another is a whale.

You promised on January 1st: to begin a raw-food, paleo, red carpet detox or some other pseudo-diet made up by Californian hippy con artists. Progress in the last month: three days of forcing down kale, two moderately satisfying dinners of poached chicken and a lot of sliced carrots. Followed by a weekend of wholemeal pasta without parmesan (salted with your tears) before erupting in grease-starved fury on Monday lunchtime. You ate two Big Macs with extra bacon and a milkshake that you bribed the staff to beef up with runoff from one of the fryers. A more realistic target: don’t fry food at home, drastically cut down on ready meals and save money by eating a lot of vegetables. If you buy an exercise bike, and work out exactly how many miles you have to cycle to burn off a single Twix, you’ll see them for the evil caramel-laced bastards they truly are.

You promised on January 1st: to do something vaguely unusual, arduous and probably embarrassing for charity. Progress in the last month: told everybody at work, registered an annoying website to guilt people into giving you cash and vaguely thought about going for a run to get in shape. The sense of smug selfsatisfaction lead you to reward yourself with an 800 calorie bacon sandwich. A more realistic target: either reschedule your event to take advantage of some wacky corporate charity month later in the year (“Bono-ctober”), or start forging the evidence of your naked run across the Kalahari by going to the sand dunes, sucking in your gut for the camera and borrowing a nativity play donkey to add in some convincing local colour. You promised on January 1st: to go to the gym every day, because that’s the only way you’ll get value from the ‘premium’ gym membership, £90 gym shoes and the impulse purchase of a dustbin full of protein powder. Progress in the last month: an induction session followed by 20 minutes on a cross trainer. A 30 minute weights workout the next day, then four days feeling like you’ve been interrogated by the CIA. You’ve realised that protein powder tastes like ice cream with sand in it, and that you never want to hear ‘Rhythm Is A Dancer’ again as long as you live. A more realistic target: get healthier by osmosis by forcing yourself to go to the gym every day, but leaving it optional as to whether you actually do any exercise. Either you get guilted into working out just to pass the time, or the long hours you spend drinking dubious XXTREME energy drinks and watching Sky News in the recovery room will lead somebody to offer you weightlifting tips, a bespoke action plan for that vibrating toilet chair thing, or possibly just some discount steroids.

W

hen you live on a small island like Guernsey there are certain things which are bound to happen. You’ll get antsy about people who just can’t use filters correctly. You’ll start to notice that certain people pop up time and time again with Truman Show timing. Inevitably, with the few shops that we have over here, you’re bound to turn up to somewhere in the same ensemble as someone else and face the dreaded realisation that one of you is going to have to go home and change.

Most of us like to think that our fashion sense is fairly individual and that surely nobody else bought that tartan scarf back in Winter 2013? But not Daphne Hurel and Marina Marlow. Perhaps they look familiar. You’ve seen them shopping in town or, no, enjoying a cup of tea together at Earlswood - that’s it, maybe? It might not even be their faces that you recognise but the fact that they can often be seen identically dressed. The pair certainly makes a striking fashion statement. I sat down to chat with Daphne and Marina about their look which we can’t help but notice. Although they come in a pair, these ladies are certainly unique.

BECAUSE QUALITY MATTERS

&

DAPHNE HUREL

So tell us a bit about yourselves?

We were mostly born and bred in Guernsey. We were evacuated to Cheshire in England during the five years of the Occupation and when the war was over, we came back to the island. Daphne has never left, but Marina came back some years ago and now we live together.

You both look so similar – are you twins? We’re actually just sisters - we do tell everybody but they don’t seem to believe that we’re not twins! Sometime people do get us mixed up. Marina always says to look at the earrings – it’s only Marina that wears them. Daphne will wear anything else but pierced earrings. If one of us is wearing them, then that one’s Marina!

Have you always dressed the same as each other? How did it start?

Is it just fashion sense or do you do share other things, too? We’re fairly similar and seem to agree on everything. We like the same food which is a good thing. Daphne does the cooking, and Marina does the buying. It’s a good system!

Your clothes are so striking – the red tops (pictured) look amazing. Where do you tend to shop for them? One of the few things that we don’t really like about Guernsey is shopping for clothes. The clothes over here just aren’t really that great. Most of ours came from Portsmouth – as Marina used to live there, we sometimes visit and shop there. There isn’t that much choice in Guernsey and often if there’s something we do like, it’ll be expensive. But if there’s something we do like then we have to have one each.

It isn’t something that we’ve always done. We started when Marina returned to Guernsey from Portsmouth after Daphne’s husband passed away in 2003. Marina has a good eye for fashion and Daphne likes everything she wears, so we decided that we’d both wear the same things.

What’s been the key to your great relationship as sisters?

Does Marina decide on the outfits then?

Finally, Guernsey’s also quite unique! What makes it ‘home’ for you?

Not necessarily! Sometimes she’ll say ‘let’s wear this!’ and Daphne will say ‘why not’ and so we do, but there’s no argument. We have fairly similar tastes. We seem to like everything the same so we buy it if we like it. That’s if the shop has two of the same - if it’s just the one, we can always share!

Just agree with what’s going on - we’ve never come to blows yet! We more or less like all the same things which is a big part of it. If you like the same things then you’re well on your way.

Daphne’s lived in Guernsey for all her life and has never wanted to move anywhere else. Marina was living in England but we decided that if she came to live in Guernsey we’d be together all the time. That’s the best thing now we always have each other.

THE RANDOMNESS OF

RICH AND FAMOUS

MISC

Some say that good things come in threes, but in this case the best things come in pairs. After all what’s Ant without Dec and the cinema without popcorn. Here’s a list of some of the best combinations and pairs we could think of:

BREAKING BAD RECORDS

1

Fish & Chips - let’s start as we mean to go on. A brilliant British classic. There isn’t much more to say, except… I’m hungry.

2

Tom & Jerry - a brilliantly memorable cartoon about a cat and a mouse, which funnily enough shouldn’t be a good combo.

3

Bonnie & Clyde - Ok, maybe these two aren’t known for the best reasons. They are still one of the most well known pairs, even if that is for robbing banks and killing Police officers.

4

Batman & Robin - Every bad guy fighting superhero needs a right hand man. In Batman’s case it was Robin, and what a perfect combination of batmobile passengers they are.

5

Ben & Jerry - Wow. That is all we can say about this beautiful pair of ice cream connoisseurs. They do it perfectly, every time.

With stiff competition such as the NFL up against the finale of Breaking Bad the figures weren’t expected to be too astonishing. But when they came in at a whopping 10.3 million viewers, it was obvious the critically acclaimed show was ‘breaking’ all kinds of records. When a High School Chemistry teacher, Walter White, finds out he is terminally ill, he sets about doing whatever he can to make sure his family is financially stable after he is gone. Walter teams up with a former student of his, Jesse Pinkman. These two together combine unbelievable chemistry knowledge with the knowledge of the streets and demand for illegal drugs. Pairing these two things together, the duo start production of Crystal Meth in an old RV. This makes Walter and Jesse the most unlikely but formidable partners in crime.

AN EXPLOSIVE GAME

A game of Ping Pong is one that has to be played in pairs, that much is fact. However, soft drink giants Pepsi took it upon themselves to play a very different version of the game to celebrate the new year. Pepsi have released an advert in which 2,014 ping pong balls are placed on mouse traps and one trigger ping pong ball is used to set off the chain reaction (year 2015, 2,015 ping pong balls, get it?). The reactions take place inside a mirrored hallway making the transition of 2014 to 2015 one of incredible visual eruptions.

NOTORIOUS D.O.G.

Most people are familiar with the washing machine eating the odd sock every now and then, but when a family in Oregon noticed more than just the odd sock going missing they realised they had a problem. In total 43 socks went missing from this ordinary family home, where did they go? The dog ate them. No, this isn’t a shoddy excuse to why the kids didn’t do their homework, this really did happen. When the family noticed their dog was very unwell they took him to the vets, only to find out the cause of his illness was the washing machines contents in his stomach. Even though the family have got their dogs snacks back there’s still one more problem, the family still need to find that missing sock.

2 PINTS OF LAGER AND A PACKET OF... BACON

It’s difficult to think of something better than Bacon. What about Beer? But don’t worry about choosing between the two, because at BarBacon Restaurant in New York they specialise in combining bacon and beer in a menu of cravings and dreams come true. Owner Peter Sherman, uses his knowledge of bacon to pair it with the perfect beer blend to complement the flavours in the bacon, saying his menu gives bacon the true recognition that it deserves. The menu is a mecca of BBQ and grilled bacon encouraging customers to experiment with the tastes of different beers and types of bacon. How quick can I get to New York? GUERNSEY’S STYLE MAGAZINE

PAIRING OFF WORDS Sarah Cilliers

WE’RE A FICKLE LOT AREN’T WE. WE WANT TRAVEL TO BE EASIER AND MORE AFFORDABLE AND TA-DAH, SOMEONE INVENTS AIRBNB. BUT THEN WE DECIDE THAT AS WELL AS BEING EDGY AND ECLECTIC, WE WANT EVERYTHING TO BE EASY. RELIABLE. SO HOTELS START TURNING OUR HEADS AGAIN.

A brief but intense flirtation with SecretEscapes.com here, a dalliance with a spa hotel there… and as we sink into perfectly laundered plump pillows and stroke our fingers over those fluffy white towels, we realise just how much we’d missed them. Hotels, you’ve got it going on.

Salisbury and Charlotte Newey have come up with all the ingredients for your dream home from home, shaken them all up with some carefully sourced antiques and retro accessories and added a hip restaurant and basement cocktail bar. It’s perfect. So perfect in fact, you’ll want to move in.

And if you’re ready to be reminded of why you fell in love with hotels in the first place, our hot tip to escape to with your significant other is London’s gloriously stylish Artist Residence hotel. Open since September, the boutique hideout is the third Artist Residence, with locations already in Brighton and Penzance - and it’s already getting top marks from hotel reviewers for its eclectic style and relaxed vibe. It’s as if the hotel’s co-founders Justin

The townhouse hotel is five minutes’ walk from Victoria station, unmissable in dark grey and striped awnings on the corner of Cambridge Street, a calm tree-lined Regency avenue in Pimlico. The hotel’s ten bedrooms each have their own style, curated by Charlotte who has a great eye for a unique piece. So you might find yourself staying in the room with the freestanding bath, a glitter great white shark print and tea crate bedside tables topped with

orange Anglepoise lamps. Or the room with the vintage suitcases, original factory pendant light and a cherry red Smeg minibar. Whichever room you end up booking, the beds are faultless, the bathrooms are vintage-tiled and elegant and filled with gorgeous full-size Bramley bath products. Everything’s thought about, right down to a tea crate of complimentary tea and coffee-making ingredients - with a cafetiere naturally. It’s hard to tear yourself away from your calm room with its kingsize bed, flatscreen TV and retro Roberts radio, but trust us, you won’t want to miss what’s going on downstairs. In a collaboration with Artist Residence, the ground floor is home to 64 Degrees, the London outpost of a restaurant that’s been making waves in Brighton’s foodie scene. It’s headed up by chef/owner Michael Bremner, who’s expanding his social dining concept into London with this experiential eating space that’s almost more vintage industrial kitchen than restaurant. And that’s the idea, you sit at the copper-clad ‘kitchen pass’ and watch the chefs creating your order - a selection of sharing plates, designed to be shared (or fought over) between two or a few of you. The interactive melting pot-style concept is rather charming -

and one reason the restaurant’s been attracting a steady stream of diners since it opened. The other reason is the food. Imaginative and well-executed and more impressive than the short descriptions would have you believe, don’t leave without trying the chicken wings with kimchi and blue cheese or the meltingly perfect short rib. And it’s not all. Down in the basement you'll find a Chesterfield-filled lounge space where you can have coffee by the fire, a private 12-seater dining room with vintage school chairs, and the underground cocktail bar, which the hotel describes as a ‘secret drinking den’. It’s a pretty stylish haunt - made even more haunting by the soft light of three antique ship’s lanterns - where you can start or finish the night with a expertly mixed cocktail. Romantic, stylish and with a pulseraising restaurant experience and cocktail bar thrown in, we say make an excuse for a weekend in London at the Artist Residence before it gets too popular. We’re planning to. After all, the welcome pack did say ‘please treat the hotel as your second home’. Well if we must…

AND ALSO... Need some time out when you’re in London? Library on St Martin’s Lane is a brand new private members’ club and bar for the literary, design and art world - the sort of place where you might run into a philosophy debate upstairs, an impromptu vermouth tasting downstairs, or a literary debate with live music in the bar. Billed as a creative co-working hub and event space with its double mezzanine and meeting rooms, Library has the eclectic decor to match; exposed brickwork, glass ceilings, reclaimed antiques, contemporary art and bar tops set with crushed glass. You can even stay over, the five-storey building doubles as a mini hotel with the penthouse’s terrace overlooking the globe of the London Coliseum. Designed by Marc Peridis of 19 Greek Street, Library will add a restaurant and fitness suite in the next few months. Library, 112 St Martin’s Lane, London.

T

he Bridge photography project is an exhibition and book focused on the ‘industrial north’ of Guernsey around the harbour at St Sampson’s, affectionately known locally as the ‘Bridge’. The project was the brainchild of two locally based photographers, Rob King and Adam Prosser. In order to gain the final story Rob and Adam immersed themselves into the Bridge community listening to peoples stories in the cafes, bars, social meeting places, businesses and on the street, photographing the people which make up this tight knit community. The characters captured in the photographs range from boat builders to shopkeepers as well as the characters that can be seen regularly chatting on the street. When did you first begin to work together? We first met on a photography course in 2010 and started the Bridge project in October 2011.

34

How would you describe your work? I think we are both story tellers, collecting our images from documentary, street and portrait photography styles. Over what period of time did you take your photographs? The first images were taken in November 2011 and we have dipped in and out of the project until June 2014 with the final images being selecting in July 2014. What inspired you to focus on this particular area of the island? The initial project was solely based on Leales Yard and was pretty much a one off shoot. We then showed those images to the professional photographer Judah Passow in June 2012, who was very complimentary and his comments inspired us to widen the project to the wider Bridge to include the local community.

GUERNSEY’S STYLE MAGAZINE

CULTURE

Did you come across any challenges completing the project? The people on the Bridge have been fantastic allowing us access to the multitude of businesses and we did not face any significant blocks to obtaining the images. Some times patience and persistence are key to gaining missing parts to a story. Our greatest challenge has been selecting the final images for the book that tell a balanced story. Do you have plans to work together on other future projects? We both have individual projects that we are working on and we are currently discussing another long term project. It is also our intention to continue the Bridge project by widening our net away from the harbour front to capture other aspects of the Bridge that are not included in the current book and the exhibition.

BECAUSE QUALITY MATTERS

For both of us the Bridge is a really special place with special people. it is a community where over a 100 small and some slightly larger businesses thrive and people always have time for a chat. We both feel very proud to have been accepted inside the ‘family’ and hopefully we have given an honest reflection of this unique community. Which photographers have inspired you? Adam is mainly inspired by Rob and Rob is inspired by Bruce Gilden, Bruce Davidson and more recently by the work produced by Vivian Maier Where else can people see your work? The exhibition at Candie Museum opens on 31 January to 8 March 2015 and is supported by a self published book. Images that are not in the book or the exhibition can be accessed via facebook/ TheBridgePhotographyProject

TRAVEL

WHATEVER THE WEATHER,

SADNESS IS FORECAST TO FADE words | The Guernsey Weather Fox

W

hen asked to write my first gallery weather article for the February edition, I realised that I was bombarded with a choice of winter weather patterns upon which to concentrate. Whilst furrowing my brow in search of a ‘St Valentine’ slant, I started to think ‘actually, why do we have this festival of love at such a cold and generally unpleasant time of year?’

I mean, the celebration goes back much further than the invention of commonly affordable central heating and electric lighting, so it can’t be simply about snuggling on sofas. So what’s the typical kind of weather that we get here in Guernsey in mid February? Well, the climate record from the past 30 years reveals that it is typically both the driest and the sunniest of the winter months. Because it’s winter, I instantly expect the driest and sunniest month to also be the coldest. And once again, the climate record confirms that this is the case. So is that sounding romantic yet? Well it depends on your definition of romance. If you are like an insatiable bee in a field of wild flowers, then maybe you should wait for May. But if you are sowing the first seeds of intrigue, with nothing more than a nervous question mark at the bottom of a carefully considered card, then February actually seems like the perfect month. Not only are a few bunnies popping their heads out of holes and starting to think about what rabbits do best, but extra tropical humans (basically anybody living at a higher latitude than 30° north or south) are starting to respond to the daily increase in sunlight. In Guernsey, this

36

increase amounts to about four minutes per day. The way we know that people are responding to the change is that, statistically, Valentine’s Day is the day when most SAD sufferers report an improvement in their mood. Since 1995, when the scientific community first acknowledged the existence of ‘Seasonal Affective Disorder’, we have all become very familiar with the acronym SAD. No doubt there are still a few disbelievers, but nowadays more and more has been discovered about how the hypothalamus is triggered by the way light hits the back of the retina. The hypothalamus is the part of the brain that governs sex drive, appetite, activity and sleep. Although SAD would have been described very differently back in the 6th century CE, that is when it is believed to have first been documented. Not surprising, that was in Scandinavia, where the effects must have been very noticeable (I bet those Vikings knew how to party in spring time). Anyway, since those heady days (and previous pagan festivals such as Lupercalia and Juno Februata), the Christian religion renamed and thoroughly sterilised the 14th of February. It is then believed, that the theme of human-to-human love was

TRAVEL

reintroduced during the Renaissance of the 14th century. Nowadays, one has to wade through a quagmire of commercialism to find that earthy awakening of the human senses, but it is there... As long as the sun and the earth remain on their orbital plane, it will always be there. So bringing it back to Guernsey 2015; the atmosphere might throw all kinds of weather at us, but it’s not going to stop us from feeling more perky. The daylight hours are stretching out, like a bear who’s just come out of hibernation. St Valentines Day will be almost an hour longer than the 1st of Feb, and that’s got to be enough to put a twinkle in your eye. Here’s a very broad summary of what we can expect (but please bear in mind that this forecast was written in mid January): The UK Met Office’s outlook for January-March 2015, is for the most probable temperature to be bang on the climatological average, and for total rainfall to probably be slightly above

average. For Guernsey in February, that means typical daily highs of 7-10°C and nightly lows of 3-6°C. Average monthly or seasonal figures can include a lot of internal variation though. At the moment I think that February will probably come in two fairly distinct halves. The first half will probably see some overnight frosts, as stormy weather remains further to the north and moderate west-northwesterly breezes bring us plenty of clear sky. There are hints that the second half will be wetter and windier but probably milder. I will be keeping a sharp eye on that period because we will be having some very large spring tides, so there is a possibility of coastal flooding again. Whatever the weather, just let your eyes soak up the extra daylight and fill your bodies with optimism. More words from me in the spring.

Lantern Parade

Guernsey Arts Commission is excited to announce their second Lantern Parade, this year to be held in conjunction with The Sarah Groves Foundation. This year’s parade will be take place on Saturday 14th March. The first lantern parade took place throughout the streets of St Peter Port in 2013, when hundreds of islanders joined in the festivities, carrying their newly made lanterns and enjoying the street entertainment. Artist Fi Smith, from the UK, visited Guernsey to train the Guernsey Arts Commission’s Community Arts team how to make the willow, triangular lanterns, and the team will be sharing there new found skills by continuing to offer workshops for the general public, so that they can make their own lantern and participate in this years parade. There are limited spaces available at the workshops, but plenty of opportunities

to get involved. The lanterns need to be made in pairs, families or groups, this will enable more people to be able to participate. It is advised that children are aged six and above and must be accompanied during the workshop, so this would be a great family activity. It is free to attend the workshops and all the materials you need will be provided. Once you’ve made your lantern then all you have to do next is be available to attend the very exciting Lantern Parade on Saturday the 14th March. To book a place on a workshop or for more info, email Antonia Ramsey on antonia@arts.gg or call 709746

When we were discussing the ‘pairs’ theme of this issue from a photographic standpoint it seemed a great opportunity to include some of Renegade Photography’s amazing double exposure work. In a world of Photoshop, this technique, perfected by Simon, pairs two images together ‘in camera’ with stunning results. Simon tells us more; ‘After first picking up a camera three years ago and starting to get interested in photography I noticed a technique that was used with film cameras where you shot two photos on one piece of film, (or ‘double exposed’). I thought the photos were beautiful and fascinating and found that my modern camera could reproduce the effect digitally’. After a lot of practice and trial and error Simon has honed his technique and has subsequently written tutorials on the process he developed for national magazines. He tells us he still gets ‘as many wrong as I do right’ but when it works and the results are as unique and beautiful as the examples here it must make it all worthwhile.

Matchmaker Gallery plays match-maker and pairs up the beauty products that really work well together. From super-charging skincare ingredients to mini beauty routines. It’s a match made in beauty heaven…. By Nichole Sweetsur

I

f you’re spending big on your skincare it’s good to know what to look out for ingredient-wise and how you can get the best results with the right combinations. Vitamin C alone can provide photoprotection but it works best in conjunction with vitamin E which increases its action by up to four times.

For a moisture boost, glycolic acid and hyaluronic acid work really well together, the latter being a humectant that helps to draw moisture into the skin and helps to maintain elasticity. Glycolic acid also loosens dead skin cells, which allows more moisture to penetrate the skin and so together you’ll find skin soon gets its glow back. Try Jan Marini Bioglycolic Serum (£39.00. Bella Spa) followed by This Works No Wrinkles Extreme Moisturiser (£46.00. Plaisirs).

Conversely, vitamin C helps to regenerate vitamin E and together they up the potency of anti-ageing serums. Try CE Tetra Serum by British cosmeceutical brand Medik8 (£63.00. medik8.com).

Pair up your favourite self-tanner with an exfoliator – always, always use the two together. Gallery loves Xen-Tan Body Scrub which doesn’t leave an oily residue on the skin and follow with Xen-Tan Medium. The scrub helps to ensure an even and longer-lasting tan (£18.74. Allbeauty).

When picking your products, there is no need to choose a serum and moisturiser from the same range, cherry pick what is best from each brand and pair up what works well for your own skin. Do, however, choose adequate sun protection and if you’re using a retinol product applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen is a must-do.

54

Another dynamic beauty duo has to be heat protection spray, used alongside straighteners or before blow-drying your hair. Moroccanoil Heat Styling Protection does double duty as a heat protection and styling spray that you can spritz on damp

hair before getting to work with your styling tools (£18.85. Allbeauty). ‘Undone’ hair is a key trend for this spring, so set aside your straightening irons and rough dry hair with a high performance hairdryer such as the Parlux 2800. This is the best brand I’ve ever tried and is a favourite amongst the professionals (£62.00. Parlux.co.uk). Hayley Fox of Bella Spa recommends using ESPA Detoxing Seaweed Bath with a skin brush as a great way to get a sluggish circulation moving. The bath oil is rich in minerals and vitamins that will help to detoxify the body and reduce fluid retention (£25.00. Bella Spa). Use with a body brush to work on cellulite and boost the lymphatic system. For an all-round rescue remedy it’s hard to beat peppermint and lavender essential oils. Together the two oils can help to relieve common ailments like headaches, bloating and nausea. Try adding a capful of Aromatherapy Associates Support Lavender & Peppermint Oil to your bath for a quick pick-me-up (£40.00. Plaisirs).

Getting the right balance Sasha & Stacie are two local sisters who have worked hard to create an ideal balance between running a successful beauty salon and managing young families. The sisters are in their 5th year of business and have been in their current salon, opposite Forest Stores, for two years.

Colour-wise, Gallery’s super-stylist, Bianca Swan, suggests: ‘Matching the soothing pastel palette that dominated the catwalks for SS15 with a cherry red nail for a punchy contrast.’ Rimmel Salon Pro By Kate Nail Polish in Hip Hop is a new favourite red (£4.49. Boots). Do think about pairing up your outfit with your makeup. ‘Now the January sales are well and truly over invest in pastel blue knitwear and wear with a bright red lip for an impact,’ says Bianca, who also advises that navy, a great trans-seasonal colour, teams well with a bright fuschia pink lip to make a statement. Estee Lauder’s Pure Color Envy in Dominant will look stunning against dark blue (£24.00. Creaseys). If you love a strong lip colour, then make sure you invest in a good primer, like MAC’s Prep & Prime Lip. Match this up with any lipstick to smooth the lips and help to prevent colour bleeding (£13.00. maccosmetics.co.uk). Brush-wise, pair up a favourite blush with Japonesque Pro Blush Brush. It will happily blend your blush, highlighter or contouring powder and the natural fibres deposit colour evenly (£28.00. Amazon. co.uk). BECAUSE QUALITY MATTERS

After graduating Chichester College with Higher National Diplomas in Health and Beauty Therapy Management, they decided to travel together. This is where they were motivated to start their business. ‘We had always wanted to start our own salon and being away from home allowed us to step back from the local beauty scene and really evaluate what it was that we wanted to create. We wanted to provide simple, honest, affordable treatments which gave our clients the relaxation they needed as well as being beneficial to their wellbeing.’ Each having a young family, the salon gives them the flexibility of juggling family life and running the business. The girls admit that trying to keep shop talk to a minimum, even at family gatherings, can be difficult but they work well together and have each found their own role within the business.

Research shows that most diseases and skin ailments can be traced back to a mineral deficiency. Unfortunately, with the world like it is, the nutrient and mineral content of our food is on the decline. Spa Find use salts from the Dead Sea which has a 10% higher mineral content than other seas, so bathing in these salts or using them in products on our skin, we are able to absorb those minerals into the bloodstream, supporting a healthy lifestyle. ‘Our clients are our number one focus and it’s amazing for us to see that we can make a difference to a person’s day by offering some much needed pampering and time to just switch off’. The sisters have lots of exciting plans for the year ahead including working alongside like minded practitioners and continuing to develop their knowledge. As well as aiming to have another successful year they want to continue maintaining a work/life balance and above all to keep enjoying what they do. Contact Sasha & Stacie at the salon on 237844, email info@sashaandstacie.co.uk or visit their website www.sashaandstacie. co.uk. Find Sasha & Stacie Beauty Therapy on Facebook to find out more about the treatments and products they offer.

Sasha & Stacie Beauty Therapy offers a wide range of beauty treatments including massage therapy, Spa Find facial and body treatments, Orly manicures and pedicures, waxing along with Pamper Parties. ‘We are both passionate about keeping our lifestyle as healthy as possible and wanted to choose a product range that supports our and our clients’ health. Increasingly, more people are aware and interested in what they're putting into their bodies but this doesn't just apply to food and drink, what you put on your skin is important too. This is why we have chosen to bring Spa Find to the island’

attacking her own body. There was one thing she did know: when she was stressed, she got worse. Shannon discovered a powerful connection between the state of her mind and her potential for recovery and soon realised that in order to change her health she needed to change her mind. Shannon went on to make the film The Connection, a documentary that highlights the groundbreaking research by world-leading experts in mind body medicine and a number of real and very inspiring stories of recovery.

I

t is widely recognised that the mind has a huge effect on the body - its state of wellness and what it can physically achieve. Mind and body, the perfect couple that should work as one, but there are countless physiological and lifestyle factors that can block that connection. Enter filmmaker Shannon Harvey. After being diagnosed with an autoimmune disease at the age of 24, Shannon, an Australian journalist and filmmaker, was told if her disease progressed she could end up wheelchair bound or with organ failure. Doctors couldn’t offer an explanation as to why her immune system was

The film features a line-up of internationally recognised mind body experts including cutting-edge scientist Dr Herbert Benson, known as the ‘father of modern mind body medicine’, and meditation teacher Dr Jon Kabat-Zinn who is credited for bringing mindfulness to the West. The film also includes remarkable true stories of people who have added mind body medicine to their healing regimes. From severe back pain, heart disease and infertility to cancer and multiple sclerosis, these real-life stories make this film a ‘must see’ for anyone interested in taking more control over their health and wellbeing. At a time when one in two people will be diagnosed with a chronic disease in their lifetime and the global cost of healthcare for chronic illness is in the trillions, The Connection offers answers and proves that you can change your mind, change your health and change your life.

But with the encouragement of his girlfriend (now wife), in a last-ditch effort to heal before going under the knife, Jason turned to yoga He started simply. Every day, twice a day for 15 minutes, he would do the same five poses. After just one week he started to feel better. After a month he was walking for two blocks without pain. It started to work. Encouraged by the results, he kept it up, even before flights in airport boarding lounges.

‘I just couldn’t function. It was awful. I went to see two different specialists and both of them told me I needed back surgery.’ Jason Wachob’s back pain was so bad he could barely walk. At the time the entrepreneur was running a new company, constantly flying around the country and cramming his 6-foot body into tight plane seats. He was travelling so much that he would often wake up not knowing what time zone he was in. The stress and the constant compression of his body in unnatural positions resulted in crippling back pain. Jason had two extruded discs and saw two specialist doctors who told him he needed surgery. ‘So much of the stress is the stress of the illness and being stressed about having the illness, not the stress that’s causing the illness.’ Jason is a former Wall

‘I just couldn’t function. It was awful. I went to see two different specialists and both of them told me I needed back surgery‘

‘I think the most powerful thing is just realising that everything is connected and once you realise that, things become a lot clearer.’ Jason soon became ready to step up his practice and started a flow-style yoga practice that focuses on a moving body and paying attention to breath. Today he is completely pain free.

The West Coast Thermidor, Crabby Jacks’ staff and specials board

H

aving undergone some significant changes in the last year, Crabby Jack’s has further developed the Hawaiian Tropic-style decor of its restaurant, with bambooladen walls, a tiki-hut, and a profusion of surfing and Hula paraphernalia adorning the walls. The popular Sunday carvery (advance booking is recommended) underwent a re-vamp in September and now offers five different kinds of meat and a vegetarian option.

It’s clear from the get-go that this place is all about the kids. There’s a secure, sizeable outdoor play area with seating for parents, and there’s plenty of colouring in to do! There were no kids in my party, but even I was so transfixed by the assorted screens showing a Scooby Doo episode that I didn’t even notice the waiter standing next to me (and I’m sure he didn’t want to interrupt what was clearly a very important plot point). I selected a table by the window, and after browsing the menu and specials board, ordered the West Coast Thermidor (with crab, scallops, and mashed potato), which I was told had been on the ‘Specials’ menu at one point but had become so popular they had added it to the menu. Clearly an excellent selection, if I do say so myself.

While my meal was cooking I went ahead and ordered a (frankly, delicious) white hot chocolate, which although wasn’t piping hot, was the perfect drinking temperature, and was served with whipped cream, marshmallows and a flake. Needless to say, when my meal arrived I was already half full from the hot chocolate (classic schoolgirl error) but I didn’t let that stop me. The plate was incredibly hot (which, although the waiter warned me about, I went ahead and touched anyway – it’s almost like a challenge – or is that just me?) which kept the food at the perfect temperature throughout the meal. The scallops were cooked to perfection, there was plenty of fresh Guernsey crab to complement them, and the sauce didn’t overpower the

flavours. The mashed potato was creamy and topped with cheese and was a surprisingly complementary side to the Thermidor. I was, disappointingly, driving so I didn’t order anything from the bar but I did take a longing peek at the bar menu which offers a variety of wines, champagnes, beers, ciders, bitters, and liqueur coffees. I will not make the mistake of taking the car next time. I was offered dessert and, although full from my food and drink so far, felt that it would be rude not to at least have a little look…I opted for the Mars bar chocolate fudge brownie (but skipped the ice cream that comes with it – you know, just to be good), which was gooey and tasty but served a little too hot and took some considerable time to cool to eating temperature. I also ordered the chunky monkey ice cream sundae, as I was aware that this was popular with the kids. I couldn’t possibly eat it after my meal so I asked for a smaller version (which was so big I couldn’t imagine how enormous the usual portion was!) and I was immediately certain that I’d made the wrong dessert selection – the sundaes are where it’s at. Throughout my meal the staff were attentive but not intrusive, well versed in the menu and specials board, welcoming and friendly to all diners, and were happy to assist with any special requirements. There was just the right amount of time between courses, particularly for hungry kids, the ingredients were fresh and the presentation was imaginative and appetising. As a massive plus, the food is incredible value for money if you’ve got a big, hungry family. I’ll admit that it’s been a while since I visited Crabby Jack’s, but I’ll definitely be going back, and I would highly recommend that you do too.

SOMETHING'S BEEN BREWING The Channel Islands’ Liberation Group has acquired Butcombe Brewery, bringing together two of Britain’s best-known independent brewery and pub companies, which will now have 94 pubs, bars and eateries, two breweries brewing over 30,000 barrels of award winning beer as well as retail and wholesale operations employing more than 750 staff. All run from our wonderful isles. Boom!

The Liberation Group has established itself as the leading pub and drinks business in the Channel Islands, with 75 predominantly freehold pubs, the Liberation Brewery and two retail and wholesale drinks supply businesses. Butcombe Brewery was founded in 1978 and is the leading brewer and pub operator in Somerset, Bristol, Bath, the Mendips and the Cotswolds, with 19 managed pubs and the multi-award winning Butcombe Brewery. The company prides itself on its traditional, classic pubs, prize winning beers, as well as Ashton Press ciders from its wholly owned subsidiary, the Long Ashton Cider Company. The combined business will benefit from stronger buying power and supply opportunities, enabling Liberation Group to sell Butcombe beers in the Channel Islands, while exporting Liberation ales on draught and in bottles into UK pub chains and supermarkets with whom Butcombe already has excellent relationships. Mark Crowther, Chief Executive of Liberation Group said, “We have been looking for some time for the right UK business to acquire as part of our longer term growth strategy. This marks the start of the exciting next chapter for Liberation and Butcombe both of whom share the same passion for quality beers and great pubs. The enlarged group provides the perfect bridge head platform for further future growth in the UK market. We are really looking forward to welcoming the Butcombe team into the Liberation Group.” Liberation Group intends to invest in Butcombe Brewery’s existing pubs, seeking brand consistency across the group and planning to refresh the food offering with further local produce and recipes. Expansion is planned to build a portfolio of food-led managed and high quality tenanted pubs, whilst continuing the growth and development of the Butcombe beer and cider range.

I

t wasn’t so long ago that ordering beer with your meal in an upscale eatery would have been considered a bit of a faux pas, but times have changed. Beer and food tasting events have become hugely popular and the concept of beer sommeliers, already well established in New York and Los Angeles, is becoming more widespread in the UK. As Britain’s Beer Alliance assures us in its latest campaign, whatever we are eating, ‘There’s a beer for that.’ Whilst all wine is made with grapes, beer has far more scope for flavour variety. Brewers can experiment with different varieties and strains of barley, wheat, hops and yeast, as well as adding ingredients such as spices, nuts, chocolate, fruits and vegetables. El Bulli’s world-renowned chef, Ferran Adrieà, recently created Estrella Damm Inedit, a beer aromatised with coriander, orange peel and licorice, specifically to complement the varied flavours found in modern gastronomy. Whilst you might have matched by region – for instance, ordering a Kingfisher with Indian food or a Singha with Thai – these are simply pilsner-type beers, not universal pairing solutions for all dishes. In Guernsey we are utterly spoilt with the range of beers brewed locally, and we have a fantastic choice of eateries: it’s a match made in heaven! The Auberge teamed up

BECAUSE QUALITY MATTERS

with Liberation Brewery to produce a menu not only accompanied by beer, but prepared with it. Dishes included sea bass steamed in Liberation Blonde Craft Beer, sirloin steak with Bailiwick Best braised oxtail and even dark chocolate and Liberation 140 Ale cake. Their beer and food matching evening was a great success and the restaurant plans to run a similar event in 2015. The Rockmount, owned and operated by Randall’s, offers an ever-changing selection of real ales to complement its gastropub menu. Randall’s Head Brewer, Matt Polli, reveals that their newest brew, St Peter Porter, is an ideal accompaniment for rich food: ‘Porters are slightly lighter in colour than stout and go really well with hearty stews as well as with chocolately desserts. St Peter Porter is brewed with a combination of four malts and three classic English hop varietals. The hop aroma is restrained, allowing the velvety malt tones to shine through. It has a robust bitterness which stops rich desserts from becoming too cloying. St Peter Porter goes perfectly with the Rockmount’s rocky choccy brownie and dark chocolate fondant.’ Whilst there are no absolute rules for pairings, you’re looking to complement, contrast or cut the various food flavours. Complementing uses a similar flavour or characteristic: at its most simple, if you’re cooking with beer, you can serve the same ale with the dish. Contrasting places the food and beer on opposite sides of the palate, and cutting is principally down to carbonation levels, with a fizzier beer lifting and slicing through rich dishes.

Here are some local recommendations for good matches: WITH BEEF AND GAME Try slow-cooking in a dark beer. The taste experience is not as simple as you might imagine, as slow-cooking meat brings out the malty, caramel notes of a dark beer, for example, while a slight bitterness is retained in the glass. Try: Randall’s Patois or Liberation Ale. WITH CURRY With strong foods like curry, it’s important to find a beer that stands up to them. Most of us go for a lager, its blandness washing away the spice, but a hoppy beer brings out the flavours and wheat beer picks up aromatic coriander. Try: White Rock’s Lost Tourist IPA (seasonal) or Liberation IPA. WITH FISH AND SHELLFISH A dry, bitter stout classically pairs with oysters whilst lager goes beautifully with delicate fish. Try: Liberation’s Summer Blonde or Randall’s Breda Super Dry. WITH CHEESE Thought that cheese only went with wine or port? Fruity beers with hops are a revelation with creamy continental or goats’ cheese, bringing out all its velvety qualities. Try: Randall’s Monty’s Best Bitter or, if you’re in Jersey, Liberation’s Mary Ann Best. WITH DESSERT For rich puddings, a porter is perfect, but stout works well too. Try: Randall’s St Peter Porter or VB

A

s we say at home, “I fell into it as a child”! I come from a generation of French wine producers and having had the good fortune to grow up amidst the vineyards of the Pays de la Loire I was educated by my father in the art of wine making from a young age. He instilled in me a vast and invaluable knowledge of the wines of France and I grew up helping him with the production and sales of our dry white Muscadet. Before opening La Maison de Champagne I travelled to the region and visited as many cellars as I could, meeting producers and learning about the varying characteristics of the grapes and how each Champagne house blends them to create their own distinct house style. Sparkling wines are produced worldwide but the word ‘Champagne’ is reserved for sparkling wines produced exclusively in this region that are protected and controlled by a comprehensive set of

62

rules and regulations that adhere to the standards defined for it as an appellation d’origine controlee.

Champagne is quality rated under a system known as the Échelle des Crus and I have carefully chosen a variety of Premier and Grand Cru labels that differ with each unique blend and aging process.

Champagne producers practice manual harvesting and use traditional methods that require precision and patience. The chalky soil characteristic of the area contributes to the lightness and finesse of Champagne wine giving it the authentic taste that the world has come to know and

love. Champagne is produced using three grape varieties, the pinot noir, the meunier and the chardonnay and it is how these grapes are uniquely blended that gives each Champagne its individual personality. La Maison de Champagne boasts a selection of Champagnes from three districts of the region, Montagne de reims, Vallée de la Marne and Cóte des Blancs. Champagne is quality rated under a system known as the Échelle des Crus and I have carefully chosen a variety of Premier and Grand Cru labels that differ with each unique blend and aging process. The vintage champagne is blended from the grapes of a single outstanding year that the individual producer has chosen to declare as a vintage. At La Maison de Champagne you can explore the different characters and history of our champagnes and uncover the mysteries of the bubbles! Champagne is best associated with celebratory moments so why not treat your loved one to one of our special valentine’s hampers this Valentine’s Day. I will look forward to meeting you in store!

f you’re looking for a one-bedroom flat, they don’t get much better than Apartment 6, One St Julian’s Avenue. This development has it all: a site with heritage – what could be cooler than living in a former brewery? – stunning sea views and spacious rooms that are light, airy and modern. The old Randall’s Brewery was an interesting building and its history has not been erased. Far from it: the architects at Dunnell Robertson Partnership have preserved and upgraded the historic site to create contemporary living spaces of different configurations. It has a trendy warehouse feel, largely thanks to the use of granite and brickwork, with a rendered element that connects the original Victorian house and archway to the new development, which is a series of smaller buildings that harmonise with each other.

As you might expect, it’s the luxe penthouse that enjoys the whole panorama but the living area of Apartment 6 overlooks the attractive courtyard. You’ll be busy gazing into each other’s eyes, though, won’t you?

One St Julian’s has some amazing views: it overlooks the bustling harbour and the St Peter Port townscape looks particularly beautiful when seen from on high. There are even views of the picturesque botanical Candie Gardens. As you might expect, it’s the luxe penthouse that enjoys the whole panorama but the living area of Apartment 6 overlooks the attractive courtyard. You’ll be busy gazing into each other’s eyes, though, won’t you? So there are cheaper one-bed flats on the market; what do you get for your £395,000? We were seriously impressed with the quality feel and finish of One, from the original features to the exquisite craftsmanship of the front gate. You can drive straight in to your underground parking space and reach No. 6 – which is on the first floor - via the lift, or you can walk through the gate and enter from the main foyer in the courtyard. The existence of this courtyard really sets the development apart: it’s reminiscent of those in London’s dockland and provides a hub that gives a real community feel. Being brand new, the apartment itself is a blank canvas upon which you can put your own stamp and create your story. The spacious living/dining/kitchen is ideal for open-plan living and opens out on to the lovely glazed balcony; you can easily conjure up images of you and your beloved cooking a meal together and eating it al fresco on a balmy summer’s evening. The kitchen itself is sleek and white, with the wooden floor that runs throughout. Unusually for a flat, there’s a utility room and built-in storage, which means you can keep the living area and bedroom clutterfree. The bedroom even has a Juliet-style balcony which means you can let in lots of fresh air. Richard Hardie, Director of Livingroom – joint sole agent of One – explains why this would be a fantastic choice: ‘Apartment 6, One St Julian's is a great first-time buy for a couple. It’s stylish, brand new and ideally located in the heart of St Peter Port. The apartment comes with one secure underground parking space, lift access, separate storage and the apartment itself includes a spacious balcony big enough for a table and chairs. It is incredibly hard to achieve parking and outside space in St Peter Port and with a longterm view, this apartment will serve as a great investment.’ Why not book yourself infor a viewing and see for youserlf. It could be the perfect setting for your love story.

hen choosing a pair of socks, you’re probably only thinking about comfort and warmth. Well think again. A Guernsey businessman is proving that socks can offer a lot more. Chris Corcoran and his Canadabased business partner Marshall Ferneyhough have developed a range of protective socks which combine all the comfort you would expect from the everyday essential with uncompromising levels of protection.

development of X13™, an indestructible yarn, featuring a fibreglass core covered in a blend of Twaron and Spectra – the leading two materials found in all manner of armour. Uldura launched the world’s first cut resistant sock in 2008. ‘We licensed X13™ and the sock itself to New Balance under its Warrior Hockey brand and together we have been successfully protecting professional and amateur hockey players globally since. We are also proud

‘You wear socks all the time and for the most part probably take them for granted, but we’re out to make you look at them in a completely different way,’ said Chris, a native Canadian who has lived locally since 2001. Uldura is revolutionising the traditional sock with cutting edge technology to create innovative footwear for all pursuits.’ Uldura socks are made from unique yarns featuring ultra-tough fibres and membranes knit with the finest wools. Its core products are waterproof, cut resistant, flame resistant and compression. Two or more of these attributes can be combined in one sock to offer multiple layers of protection. And Uldura doesn’t just make socks ‘Our focus is expanding and we are not just a technical sock company anymore. Our protective yarns have been manufactured into clothing base layers and linings to fit all manner of garments.’ They are currently in final discussions with Caterpillar to supply the global brand with full flame resistant base layers. Chris and Marshall, both 37, grew up in London Ontario, Canada, where they schooled together. They later went to the same college in Vancouver before Chris moved to Guernsey to pursue a career in finance. The friends always stayed in close contact, and in sharing the same entrepreneurial spirit, a business partnership always seemed inevitable. But what led them to socks? Chris said: ‘Uldura’s roots are in ice hockey - we’re both huge fans and Marshall used to play competitively. A common ice hockey injury is lacerations to the lower leg from opponents’ skate blades. We saw an opportunity to protect against that.’ They set out to design a cut resistant sock and found their solution in the construction of bulletproof vests. This led to the

Uldura’s fire resistant fabric, merinoFR™, combines the skin-friendliness of merino wool with the fireproof properties of Lenzing® FR yarn. Its superfine merino fibres are breathable and draw perspiration away from the skin to combat body odour and regulate temperature. The wool is intricately blended with Lenzing® FR to create a protective layer from direct flame, arc flash and molten metal splash. Chris said: ‘The regulations have just changed in North America making it a legal requirement for electricians to wear fire retardant clothing, and for a number of other industries it just makes sense. Our MerinoFR™ flame resistant base layers not only protect the skin from burns, they also provide the utmost comfort, which counts for a lot when you’re operating in demanding conditions.’ Uldura’s most recent offering is its line of fashion compression socks, which are scientifically proven to aid circulation and prevent deep vein thrombosis. They also mitigate symptoms associated with tired and aching legs.

sponsors of the Redbull Crashed Ice and have been protecting the competitors for a few years now. ‘You’ll find it hard to believe something so comfortable can provide such high protection.’ Following the success of the cut resistant sock they were soon to identify further gaps in the market. A massive research and development effort followed, leading to the production of what they claim to be the most comprehensive and technical line of protective socks ever created. ‘We use natural materials wherever possible, and all are garments use Copper Cutec™, which promotes cell growth and is anti bacterial and anti microbial.’

‘Whether for medical reasons or for everyday wear, everyone’s legs feel better wearing our compression socks,’ said Chris. ‘Until now most compression socks out there have been very plain and clinical in their design. We have breathed new life into this otherwise boring market with a range of stylish socks.’ Chris and Marshall are in the early stages of developing an innovative biometric and mechanical sensor microchip technology to incorporate in their clothing, which will be able to sync to all manner of devices. It will primarily be aimed at professional athletes and employers. The business partners successfully run Uldura from opposite sides of the Atlantic. Uldura’s board is here in Guernsey and they use a local trust company for administration services. Manufacturing is currently in Turkey, Canada and the USA. ‘Coping with the time difference means lots of early starts for Marshall and late nights for me. A lot of our communications and meetings are via Skype, which is a godsend in enabling us to maintain virtual face to face contact.’ To find out more about Uldura, log on to www.uldura.com

International advertising and marketing agency, Oi, has appointed experienced marketer and agency professional Pip Queripel as the Managing Director of its Guernsey operation. The appointment is part of Oi’s next phase of growth across Guernsey, Jersey and London. Jersey Director Heather Townsend has been promoted to Jersey Managing Director. “I have been really impressed with the structure, people, passion and client service that Oi offers. I have worked both with, and for, a number of top agencies over the past 15 years and truly believe that Oi has combined infrastructure investment with great people to deliver market-changing solutions to its clients. I am really looking forward to joining the agency as it takes the next step towards achieving ambitious growth plans,” said Pip, whose focus will be on managing the Guernsey team and clients as well as Oi’s UK client base. Pip has extensive agency and marketing experience. She moved to Guernsey in 2004 having worked at London agencies for 5 years. Her agency experience encompasses working with an impressive array of blue chip brands including Baileys, Carling, Coca-Cola, Disney, Grolsch, Microsoft, and T-Mobile before she moved to Diageo to manage their creative agencies, working across their extensive portfolio of products. Pip was Head of Marketing and Business Development at a leading international law firm for five years and has been consulting for various Guernsey businesses over the past couple of years.

Founder and owner of Oi, Peter Grange has become Chief Executive Officer with a focus on liaising with the Managing Directors and Ben Clarke, Creative and Digital Director, to develop new business across all markets including the London operation. “It’s important to make this structural change at this stage in Oi’s life. We’re eleven years old and this is a pinnacle moment I’ve been looking forward to for a while. I now have my dream management team,” said Peter. “This new management team structure will enable me to focus on ideas, strategy, leadership and business development to take Oi to the next level. It’s going to be good fun.” Paul Luxon, Oi Chairman, said the agency will continue to look for growth opportunities including acquisitions across Guernsey, Jersey and London in 2015, following a successful 2014. “Making clients more successful is our priority and we are committed to developing a market-leading agency. Following the acquisition of award-winning Jersey creative agency Arcade in 2014, we are open to discussing acquiring other agencies in the Channel Islands or London that would complement Oi’s full-service agency offering,” he added.

GTA MBA PROVES POPULAR ACROSS THE BOARD THE opportunity to gain a globally recognised professional qualification without having to travel to the UK to study has once again proved popular. The average cohort of the Masters in Business Administration qualification, which is run by the GTA University Centre in conjunction with the University of Southampton, is 12 and runs over two years. This year, 14 have started the course, which includes young managers from the States of Guernsey who will use year one to gain a Postgraduate Certificate in Business Administration. The course, which aims to give students a grounding in the latest management techniques and thinking, provides an understanding of strategic management and an insight into business issues through individual research and by covering a wide range of modules including effective leadership, contemporary marketing, decision modelling and analysis, corporate finance and operations management. The fact that the course is studied on-island is the reason Clare Carre enrolled. Mrs Carre, who is a qualified lawyer, recently moved to the island with her Guernsey-born husband, and joined the Guernsey Financial Services Commission earlier this year. As a mother of three young children and with a full-time role, she said she couldn’t have considered the MBA had it not been taught on-island; ‘It was the reason why it was so attractive. The study sessions are already planned and so it becomes part of your life. It is tough but I am very lucky to have the support of the GFSC which makes it easier to fit it all in and a very supportive husband.’ Further yourself without going too far, give GTA a call.

The Guernsey Financial Services Commission (GFSC) licensed 85 new international insurers during 2014. Further data on the 85 licensed entities shows that their owners’ originate from a range of locations, including the UK (35%), Cayman Islands (29%) and Ireland (13%)*, while the range of business written over the 12 months to 31 December 2014 includes Insurance Linked Securities (ILS) (45%) and insurance lines covering property (13%), life/health (8%), and After the Event (ATE) legal expense (7%). CAREY OLSEN LAW FIRM OF THE YEAR IN GUERNSEY Citywealth named Carey Olsen the Guernsey Law Firm of the Year for 2015 at its International Finance Centre Awards in London last month From a shortlist of other island firms, Carey Olsen was selected for the accolade having worked on a number of large and ground-breaking cases during 2014. The Citywealth IFC Awards were established to highlight the excellence of the advisors and managers in the private wealth sector in the major offshore jurisdictions. Citywealth also produces its annual Leaders List of professional advisers in the field which is used as a reference tool for the industry.

Accountancy and business advisory firm BDO Limited announced a year of steady growth in 2014 as its UK parent company and the BDO International network report accelerated growth and profitability for the last financial year. For Guernsey, new client wins during the financial year ended June 2014 exceeded £500k of recurring fees, with revenues increasing by 35%. The Guernsey firm’s managing director Richard Searle said BDO Limited had seen a strong performance in all areas of its business, from audit and advisory to tax and financial services, while client service levels remained exceptionally high. Looking ahead to 2015, Richard says the signs are encouraging, not just for BDO Limited but for Guernsey’s economy in general, with a number of established businesses showing intent to expand and new business continuing to come into the island. However, he tempered this optimism with a cautionary message that the island must continue to innovate and to respond quickly and proactively to the dual challenges presented by competing jurisdictions and ever-increasing regulation.

TRAVELMAKER SCOOPS TWO NATIONAL AWARDS Co-op Travelmaker has taken top prizes at two national tour operators’ awards in recognition of its excellent customer service. The company, which has Guernsey and Jersey branches that have been arranging travel for Channel Islanders for many years, was named the Travelsphere Travel Agent of the Year at the All Leisure Group awards. The ceremony was held on board the Hebridean Princess, moored in Greenock near Glasgow. Travelmaker was also named Travel 2’s Top Tailor-made Agent at a ceremony attended by 120 travel agents and tour operators.

MOBILE MOANERS As mobile devices become the centre of our universe it’s no wonder that when your call drops or YouTube buffers when you’re showing something to your friend you vent at the mobile operator. With 3G filling up and 4G not quite with us it’s unsurprising that we’re not 100% satisfied with our providers. The Channel Islands Competition and Regulatory Authorities’ (CICRA’s) second independent customer satisfaction survey of mobile service providers has seen Airtel and Sure lead the way by delivering across the board improvements in customer satisfaction in all areas. The survey of 500 islanders asked them to give their opinion on the quality of service, billing and the level of customer service they received from the three operators. The number of respondents who rated their mobile service provider’s quality of service as satisfactory or highly satisfactory increased from 60% in May to 68% in November. Airtel and Sure results have improved achieving 88% and 70%, respectively, compared to 82% and 59%, respectively, in May. However JT’s original lower results in May of 49% declined further to 40% in November. 70% of respondents rated their billing as satisfactory or highly satisfactory - up from 53% in May. Airtel and Sure’s results improved at 82% and 72%, respectively, compared 60% and 53% in May. JT’s results declined to 48% compared to 51% in May.

T

hroughout my test run of the new Audi TT coupé, all I could think about was how far technology in cars has come along, which then led to the slightly more disturbing thought of how this could lead to the events of Terminator 2 becoming reality. But I digress.

In keeping with our theme of ‘pairs’ this month, I found the perfect new car for islanders who move as a twosome. Though it technically has four seats, the back two are designed to be used more for extra storage or very young (and therefore very small) children.

88

Firstly, from a shallow and purely appearance based point of view, it’s stunning. The ‘tango red’ colour is hugely appealing to the eye and there is little chance of losing it in a big carpark. Audi also appear to have cleverly disguised a TARDIS as a sports car, as it’s surprisingly roomy on the inside and the boot space would fit two fair sized suitcases. Slick and futuristic, the design is not a huge departure from previous models of the TT, but that’s not a bad thing as all models share the same unique and stylish look that really aims to make a statement about the people inside. This car is obviously being marketed to a cool couple of any age who appreciate grace, finesse and the ability to go very, very fast.

experience. The wipers will come on automatically, the handbrake comes on automatically and the lights? You guessed it; automatic. The lights will also sense when cars are coming the other way and dim as appropriate. As well as being extremely cool, this all goes towards the feeling of the car doing the work for the driver to get the smoothest and most comfortable driving experience possible. While many of the features are common place in newer cars, the dip light technology is brand new and worked extremely well during my dark, winter test drive.

Now for the fun part, how does it drive? As you’d expect, it’s a very smooth ride. As an automatic, the gears shift automatically and they move along without much of a sound providing an easy but enthralling ride. Obviously the car can go fast, far faster than our island roads permit, but it sits comfortably at the 35mph mark, still giving the illusion in its third or fourth automatic gear that you’re going a lot faster than you think. I expect that if you were looking at a car such as this, you would want to take it over to the mainland a lot to really let loose the power of that two litre engine. It’s also worth noting that though it seems wide in the showroom, it doesn’t suffer too badly in the country lanes and would be ideal for a Sunday drive all around the island.

BECAUSE QUALITY MATTERS

However, what really peaked my interest (and made me re watch Terminator 2) is the incredible amount of extras. For starters, almost all of the features have moved from the centre of the car to the dashboard, giving the driver maximum control. Interestingly, it’s all on a computer screen in front of you, rather than the centre tablet style that you see in many other cars. Radio, Bluetooth, sat nav and music capabilities are all quite literally at your fingertips alongside the now virtual speedometers. Like many new cars, a start and stop button is the preferred choice for a fast moving driver on the go who doesn’t have time to fiddle with keys.

In conclusion, I was completely sold on the new TT. It’s a beautiful car with more bells and whistles than you could have ever thought possible and ideal for a couple who want an impressive and modern vehicle. It’s perfect for navigating small lanes or sunny coast roads, but will really come into its own when taken off island so you can really let loose and get the most out of the 260 break horse power engine. All in all, it’s a joy to control and made me curse my (actually quite nice) VW Polo after the drive. Whether you ride solo or with a partner and are looking for something special to start the year, do yourself a favour and try this one out, you won’t be disappointed. The new TT is priced at £36,321.00. Available now at Jacksons.

However, the features that impressed me the most were the automatic ones that encourage convenience throughout the

GADGETS

FEBRUARY. A PERFECTLY GREAT MONTH PLAGUED BY THE ONE EVENT EVERY YEAR THAT IRONICALLY MAKES EVERY SINGLE MAN AND WOMAN FEEL MORE DISPIRITINGLY LONELY THAN SANDRA BULLOCK IN SPACE, OR INDEED ANYBODY THAT INEVITABLY SPENT TWO HOURS ALONE WATCHING GRAVITY IN CINEMAS. However, it would be too easy for me to project my hatred of others’ happiness onto these pages through scathing reviews of gadgets designed specifically for couples; I have instead chosen a different path this month, one of peace and, in the embers of the lingering Christmas spirit, love to all. After spending arduous hours rifling through what you can imagine was a diverse and intriguingly thought-provoking range of the internet’s suggestions for “gadgets for couples”, I have managed to compile a short list of familyfriendly technology that can aid your marital situations, only toying with the idea of sex very briefly (the least subtly veiled side steps of all time). Whilst the relationship-healing qualities of these gadgets

cannot be vouched for, they are more than capable of providing small sparks that might just bring you closer together. Hell, if any of them help you and your loved one to have a more exciting, amorous and altogether close valentine’s day, I’ve done my job.

YANKO DESIGN NOTE TOASTER

RING ALARM CLOCK

It’s a worldwide, undisputable fact. There is nothing better than breakfast in bed. Waking up to a plateful of bacon, eggs, sausages and toast, held by your partner who waits anxiously for you to open your eyes and give him/her the gratitude that they slaved away to achieve. There’s no way that this can get better, right? Wrong. Imagine that same scene again, only this time, through some sort of wizardry, the toast that was so lazily slapped on the side of the plate, covered in running ketchup and whatever sauce it is that beans come in, is now engraved with a personalized message! Yes, you read that right, this toaster has the ability to ‘toast’ in whatever words you want, whether it’s the morning after an argument and you want to berate, or you just feel like making their day. Keep in mind, however, that when I say ‘toast in the words’, what I really mean is that your toast will essentially be burnt wherever you draw. This really makes you question whether an extra effort write the message is really worth the utter effrontery that is providing burnt toast. Really, this isn’t a gift. It’s more of an underhanded insult. We are once again dealing with a concept here, so it is not available to the general public. Designed by Sasha Tseng, this one may only be available if you can present a truly compelling argument to Tseng herself in which this toaster could genuinely save your marriage. Although if you think toast can really do that, you need to question either your partner’s or your own priorities.

90

So, settle down by the fire with your spouse, girlfriend or pet that is substituting as a human partner for the night and enjoy the revolutionary Hug Shirt, send ‘cute’ messages with the Digital Fountain Pen or even leave a love note on their toast with the Note Toaster. God, I’ve sunk low this month.

Normally in an article like this, if I were to mention vibrating rings some more conservative heads may be swiftly turned and some rather brash accusations thrown around about the freedom of the media. However, in this case the rings could not be more innocent, or practically helpful in a situation that has cursed couples since the dawn of the alarm clock. This alarm clock provides two rings, that can be individually set up to vibrate just enough to wake you up at different times in the morning. Personally, the biggest advantage to this alarm clock is that I would no longer have to be awoken by noises that closely resemble Cheryl Cole’s live performances, only a little more melodic. For people in relationships however, the vibrating, noiseless ring puts an end to the constant crushing feeling that you could have had more time asleep, dreaming of a land without mortgages and the constant pressure to surprise and provide for your spouse, if it had not been for their need to wake up at an hour when even roosters are wiping the sleep from their eyes. This is, unfortunately, still a concept design by Fandi Meng, and so isn’t mass produced yet. However, Meng has already won a myriad of awards for his design, so the logical answer to the problem of differing waking times should be available to the public soon. If only all problems in the morning were that easy to sort

D:SCRIBE DIGITAL FOUNTAIN PEN We are in the heart of the digital age. It’s undeniable that it controls our lives, from the laptop I’m writing this on to the phone that you’ll inevitably tweet #gallerygadgets on later (optimistic I know, but a boy can dream). The question is often then raised as to what role technology can play in a relationship. Even minus the obvious responses to said question, the resounding answer remains that technology and gadgetry can always help. Regardless of technology, nobody can deny that a message between lovers, a declaration of love, will always provide a great way of bonding for couples. The lovers of literature and those with some indescribable need to cling on to the vintage will argue that there is nothing more romantic than a hand-written love letter, whilst the techies among us will argue that a simple text message with some evidence of conscious thought will more than suffice. There is now a way, however, to bring peace to the raging war between these ideologies. Welcome

to the D:Scribe Digital Fountain Pen. This magical writing implement will, using what seems to be the deepest dark magic that even Sauron couldn’t offer, transfer whatever you write using the pen into text message and send it to your partner’s phone. Genius? Obviously. An abomination? Absolutely. A tool for salvaging marriages and relationships? At a very long stretch, even if the angered party is one of the rare few that believe technology is ‘sexy’ This product is again a concept piece, designed for the Dyson Student Award in Australia by Reuben Png. Png makes up for a distinct lack of vowels in his last name with a remarkable knowledge of design in technology, however he clearly falls flat on his face when it comes to marketing, because this could be an absolute goldmine. Who wouldn’t want the ability to write out their texts by hand. Oh…

WHEN IT COMES TO SOUND, SIZE MATTERS.

W

hichever way you look at, when it comes to size, small isn’t a bad thing – unless applied to music. In our opinion, music needs to be played big and played strong. It needs to fill a room and all its nooks & crannies

This is especially true in the world of portable speakers. It’s pretty obvious that you’re going to want powerful, quality sound packaged in a suitably attractive aesthetic. Just because something is small, shouldn’t’ mean a compromise in sound, right?

THE HUG SHIRT

During my extensive time on the web researching the ever-expanding world of gadgets, so that I can provide you with up-to-the-minute commentary and observations, I sometimes come across something that is truly, indescribably, even painstakingly, pathetic. The Hug Shirt is one of those things. Never in my life have I seen something that symbolizes and announces someone’s loneliness and desperation for human contact so loudly and distinctly. This shirt (that’s actually a hoodie) connects with an app on your iPhone that registers, through sensors in the garment, the touch, strength and duration of a hug, and sends it to another person that is wearing the fashion abomination. Cute in so few ways, terrifying in so many more. An unexpected hug from a hoodie may well spark images of constriction, and falling into the hands of the wrong user, this could genuinely be used as a weapon for what Nacho Libre called the “Anaconda Squeeze”. It is fair to say that, whilst aiming for cute and coupley, CuteCircuit designs have shot and hit the target labeled potentially dangerous and definitely creepy. Amazingly, out of all the gadgets in this issue, this is the one you can actually buy. Head to www.cutecircuit.com and have a browse, where I’m sure you’ll find other innovations that will ‘revolutionize’ the fashion/technology world. Maybe a glove that can be controlled remotely to slap people in the face?

inding the perfect doubles partner is always a plus, but being born with one can certainly have your opponents seeing double. Identical twins Josh and Lawrence Stacey are some of Guernsey Table Tennis’ finest first division players but the pair promise their success is down to hard work in training and not any twin related shenanigans. The pair started playing in 2003 at just eight years old, now 19 they have moved through the GTTA’s coaching program with great success under the watchful eye of development officer Becks

O’Keefe. “The Stacey Twins’ as we affectionately call them, have always worked hard both individually and together. This was clear when the pair were selected to play for Guernsey in the 2013 World Table Tennis Championships in Japan. In the early days I couldn’t tell them apart, only being able to recognize them by their trainers!” Becks has trained the twins thought their table tennis career and both Josh and Lawrence now assist her as she trains the next generation of table tennis stars. The two man teams in the first division makes for easy selection – ‘The Stacey Twins’ are a formidable doubles partnership as they undoubtedly know each others games inside out. “We do enjoy playing doubles together, although, if we were mirror twins

When asked about the possibility of a player swap, having seen the opponent, the boys claim never to have tried this twin prank “no, but we should!” says Josh. “It is pretty funny when umpires get us mixed up, especially during doubles when they need to call the server” confesses Lawrence. “We always answer to each others name but usually correct them.”

Playing up to five times each week, Lawrence and Josh keep each other motivated, “if one of us doesn’t fancy it one night, the other will always get us going. We are far too competitive with each other – if one wins, the other always wants revenge.”

However, coach Becks recalls one occasion, “I always remember during their first

NEED A CHALLENGE FOR 2015?

GUERNSEY Hockey LBG is hoping to build on the success of its inaugural year taking part in the National Championship. This season has seen the Island represented in the England Hockey U14 Boys and U16 Girls National Championship for the first time.

of the match, made two excellent saves before Trojan scored to lead the game 1 – 0 at half-time. Tiredness started to show in the second half and saw Guernsey play the game too tight in the middle allowing Trojans to score two in quick succession to end the game 3 – 0.

‘The opportunity to play some of the best clubs in the south of England was one we have been working towards for a number of years and is an integral part of the development of our young players,’ said Julien Sharpe, director of junior hockey for Guernsey Hockey LBG.

The girls started their second away trip with a game against Bournemouth and forced the first penalty corner. After a number of further corners, Guernsey opened the scoring when Laura Cashin sent the ball in from the corner and then moved quickly to the side of the goal to deflect Katherine Bushell’s strike but the umpire below for an infringement and the goal was disallowed. The team managed to keep the score at 0 – 0 at half-time with strong performances from Molly Cooper and Jasmine Norman and goalkeeper Carys Bromley. A second chance for Guernsey saw Vicky Mann strike for a goal but it was stopped by the keeper but Bournemouth showed their experience and quickly took a 3 – 0 lead which they held to the end.

Both squads have been sponsored by Ravenscroft as part of the understanding for the teams taking part in the England Hockeyorganised competition is that Guernsey travels to the UK for all of their games. In October, the under 14 boys played Winchester and drew three all with two goals coming from Padraig Wrigley and one from Jay Piset. Their second game was against Havant, the strongest team in the competition, which ended in a 6 – 0 defeat. The under 16 girls also played Havant with the game ending in a 6 – 1 defeat with a goal from Amy Sharp and a second disallowed. Their second game was cancelled after Guildford withdrew from the competition. Last month, the boys played Fareham and dominated play for the first 20 minutes but failed to find the back of the net. Just before the whistle, Fareham scored a breakaway goal to give them the lead at half-time. Keen to equalise, Guernsey pressed forward which left them exposed at the back and Fareham took advantage with another breakaway goal. The game went from end to end as Guernsey continued to chase but it finished in a 3 – 0 win for Fareham. The second game of the day was against Trojans who put Guernsey goalkeeper Morgan Clayton, an under 12 aged player competing in the age group above, under pressure. Clayton, who was named man

With just a 20 minute rest and with the rain beating down, Guernsey went back out to face Trojans and were under intense pressure from the whistle and despite strong defending, Trojans scored six in the first half. Captain Laura Cashin’s half-time talk rallied the team and Trojan’s could only add one more in the second half. Laura said “The players did Guernsey proud and will no doubt use this experience to not only develop their own skills but pass on what they have learnt to their team-mates.”

The Standard Chartered Jersey Marathon 2015 will be the 10th anniversary of the event, so this will be a very special race with many new and exciting developments to ensure it’s the largest and most memorable event to date! The event will again consist of its three race categories; Marathon, Mourant Ozannes Relay Race and 3k Fun Run. So whatever your ability, there is a race distance for everyone. The event organisers are again encouraging some healthy interisland competition and would like to welcome even more runners from Guernsey in 2015, to help create a memorable race for the Channel Islands in this special year. Interested runners can visit the website http://www.jersey-marathon. com/travel-packages for information on available travel packages. It is again expected that hundreds of runners from all around the world will join this year’s race, as it continues to grow in popularity. Runners can expect to line up alongside even more elite runners in 2015, as the events prize fund has once again been increased. In addition to this, the organisers are pleased to announce a fun new ‘fancy dress’ prize category, which will be judged across all three race categories with the aim to support the fundraising effort. For the first time in the event, there will be the introduction of chip timing for individual relay race runners, as well as providing split times for marathon runners as they pass each relay station. The chip timing around the course and the introduction of a live site that displays runners locations and identities, will greatly assist supporters as they follow and encourage runners around the course. The official 2015 Standard Chartered Jersey Marathon beneficiaries are The Stroke Association and Seeing is Believing. Runners will now be able to set up their own online fundraising page as they complete their entry into the race. Organisers are hopeful that this new technology will help the fundraising efforts to reach a record-breaking amount for the event in 2015. So if you’re a seasoned pro at the Standard Chartered Jersey Marathon, or have never run it before, then we can guarantee the 10th Anniversary event is a race that you don’t want to miss! boardomdid you know:twins? 1. In 1980, one in every 53 babies born was a twin. By 2009, that number had risen to one in 30, which means that over three decades, the twin birth rate (twins per 1,000 births) rose 76%. 2. The chances of having a twin pregnancy is increased by maternal age (30+). 3. There is a “twin gene” – fraternal twining, which is the result of a woman releasing more than one egg at the same time, is genetically predisposed.

98

4. Identical twins are the result of a random split of a single egg and cannot be genetically predisposed.

8. 22 % percent of twins are left handed, compared to 10% in singletons.

5. Male twins will not have twins unless their wives have the ability to produce two eggs.

9. Fraternal twin girls have twice the chance of giving birth to twins than singletons.

6. Identical twins share the same DNA but do not have the same fingerprints.

10. Vanishing twin syndrome- 15-20% percent of all twin pregnancies will miscarry one fetus.

7. About 1 in 250 pregnancies results in identical twins.
