O

ur decadence has been stolen. I blame dessert manufacturers and interior designers-turned-TVhosts. If you hear about someone being decadent nowadays it’s likely to be due to an excessive inclusion of Green&Black’s in a chocolate pudding or buying an unnecessarily thick duvet for the spare bedroom. Decadence, in its literal and historically referenced sense, describes the ‘decline of moral, ethical or sexual traditions’. It sounds like a bad thing but, where embraced, frequently resulted in historic periods of great creativity and fun. Romans would turn in their dusty graves to know a word that is frequently used to reference their excessively indulgent lifestyles is now being used to describe low fat yogurt. Yep, the toga party pros were pretty good at it despite the term not being coined until 1400 years later. It’s a little self-destructive as a concept which probably explains why we’re not speaking Latin. Decadence is pretty unsustainable. Exhibiting a destabilisation of societal norms, the decadents were the ones you loved to hate; Dandies, Parisian artists - Dubussy, Degas and Toulouse Latrecs or the ‘dandies’. The sort of people whos peers thought looked like idiots but were probably having the best parties. An early celebrity, if you will. Imagine a world built on celebrity. There’s a horrific thought. Our use of the word as this month’s theme therefore accepts old and new interpretations. It’s not as exciting as, comparatively speaking, December is our most decadent time of year, a time for excess, a time for letting it roll, a time for a little bit of extravagance. As we enter the Christmas party season, balls and events dominate and there’s a strong chance you’ll be spending your time eating, drinking and being merry. Exactly how decadent you choose to be is up to you.... BD

If you live in Guernsey and are reading this in December, the answer will need to include mega-premium next day delivery and a prayer to the fickle god of GST imports. Needless to say, try and buy it locally first. Even if we did have a healthier high street, presents have always been a challenge in Guernsey because we are an Island of compulsive spenders. The money tied up in our store card accounts, furniture loans and car repayments outstrips the Greek national debt, so your main challenge in treating somebody is getting there before they manically treat themselves after one too many espressos. Unaware that reality is an illusion (is reality), they must aim to get a hole in one whilst avoiding the music of Skrillex, “political correctness” and Miley Cyrus’s gyrating buttocks. The only way to make these modern horrors disappear and return to a reality spent watching the Grand Prix in salmon chinos is to defeat a boss (high blood pressure), who triggers an affidavit signing over your entire property portfolio to your children. A New York firm believes it is the first in the world to create and sell alcoholic beer-flavoured ice cream. The Rotary Club of Guernsey was formed on March 3rd 1923, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Bournemouth. Our local branch belongs to Rotary District 1110 that covers the middle south of England and the Channel Islands. The founder Paul Harris visited Guernsey in 1937. The original membership of the club back in 1923 numbered a very healthy 65 including many well known Guernsey Business men.

t is said that every minute of every day Rotary will touch the lives of millions somewhere in the world. By combining their skills and resources, members of Rotary are able to make a real contribution to the lives of others. In Guernsey alone, the club raises tens of thousands of pounds for community projects and local charities. Members also volunteer their time – supervising and running community projects and events, such as the Itex-Rotary Walk, Christmas hampers for the needy and the Rotary Tree of Joy, providing Christmas presents for children who might not otherwise receive much. Several projects are aimed at promoting the achievements of young people, such as Youth Speaks and Young Chef. In addition, as well as financially assisting local families, the club raises funds for worldwide emergencies including provision of ShelterBoxes and Aqua boxes and support dedicated projects worldwide. ‘The Rotary Club of Guernsey is very much a fun club made up of male and female members covering a wide range of professions, with the common theme of fellowship and providing service to the local community and abroad’ says Nigel Dorey, Rotary Club Guernsey President. This includes wider support to Rotary International initiatives worldwide through Rotary’s own charity “Foundation”, such as the eradication of polio.

Membership is by invitation, but Rotarians are free to tell their friends all about it and encourage them to apply. In 2001 Rotary International decreed that Rotary Clubs should not discriminate or otherwise limit membership in the club on the basis of gender, race, colour, creed or national origin. Therefore all applications for membership are treated equally. In recent years Rotary world-wide has applied itself to the virtual elimination of polio in children. It also holds ‘Eye Camps’ where qualified Rotarians in countries such as India have saved the sight of thousands of people. It involves itself wherever it sees a need, such as giving relief after a tsunami.

When the lights go on each year, islanders start to feel that Christmas is once again nearly upon them and it boosts spirits. In addition to the star on top, 32 light strings each over 100 feet long have to be attached individually to the top of the Mast. This is no mean feat and is carried out by our Rotary Elves, who are all volunteers. The club are grateful to be supported by some real experts each year, such as M&G Engineering. They are hugely grateful to their three generous sponsors, whose donations cover the capital and erection costs of the Town Mast light tree each year: Long Port, Deutsche Bank and Sure. This helps them to ensure that funds and presents generated by the Rotary Tree of Joy campaign each year go fully to the benefit of local children.

THE ROTARY TREE OF JOY The brightly-lit star on the top of the town roundabout mast is some 110 feet up each Christmas, when the mast is transformed into the Rotary Tree of Joy. The Tree of Joy is the height of an 11 storey building - it’s Europe’s tallest light tree each year. The Rotary Tree of Joy initiative enables the generous Guernsey public to obtain a ‘Tree of Joy Tag’ from a range of shops, banks and other locations and purchase a Christmas present for a needy child in Guernsey. Employees in various offices also participate in this initiative, buying a present for a needy local child, rather than

GUERNSEY MIND OFFICES GET AN UPGRADE Guernsey Mind’s work within the community to promote positive mental health has been made significantly easier by the donation of two computers from C5 Alliance Group. The team at Guernsey Mind were previously doing all of their vital charity work from two outdated machines. As well as donating the new PCs, the IT services and business solutions company also committed staff time to improving the efficiency of the office infrastructure going forward. The team from C5 equipped the Guernsey Mind office with a network, performed a data migration to bring legacy data from their old systems onto the new ones and configured their broadband, printers and emails. The firm will also provide ongoing systems support free of charge. Emily Litten, operations and development manager at Guernsey Mind said: “We’ve just taken on a new member of staff so the donation came at a good time. Beforehand we were working with just one battered laptop and an old PC. It’s great to be able to get on with our jobs without worrying about technical difficulties and things running slowly.”

SCHOOL CHILDREN TO BE SAFE AND BE SEEN Guernsey Electricity is reminding islanders to stay safe on the roads during the winter through the annual ‘Be safe Be Seen’ campaign in association with Island FM. The initiative aims to make sure kids stay safe on their way to and from school by supplying them with reflective stickers that they can put on their bags and bikes so that they can be easily seen by drivers in the dark and wintery conditions. Guernsey Electricity and Island FM along with the Guernsey Police will also be attending schools in the coming weeks to distribute the stickers and give advice on road safety. Alan Bates, managing director at Guernsey Electricity, said: “Guernsey Electricity is proud to have been involved with the ‘Be Safe Be Seen’ initiative for a number of years. It’s so important in a place like Guernsey with its small busy roads that the many children who enjoy walking and cycling to school feel safe. The scheme helps to educate children on road safety and to give advice on preparing for their journeys during the winter including the use of the reflective stickers. The stickers really stand out and they help the many drivers to be more aware of pedestrians and cyclists when the mornings are dark and the nights are drawing in. They are really popular with school children - they love to plaster them across their bikes, bags and coats.” The ‘Be Safe Be Seen’ reflective stickers are available from the Guernsey Electricity showroom on The Bridge.

THE FIRST RULE OF CODE CLUB IS... <... ...> Twelve children at Amherst Primary School, aged between nine and eleven, are taking part in an after school coding class run by local digital agency Indulge Media. The class is part of a UK initiative called ‘Code Club’, a network of free after-school classes, which aims to leverage the knowledge and experience of volunteers and give children the chance to learn computer programming skills not taught on the general curriculum. Lesson plans and project materials are provided by Code Club and taught by volunteers at an after school club for one hour each week. The projects teach children how to program by showing them how to make computer games, animations and websites. Each term new projects are provided and students progress through a number of levels designed to develop basic skills ranging from programming to web development using HTML and CSS. There are currently over 1000 Code Clubs operating in the UK but the Amherst will be the first of its kind in the Channel Islands. Director Russell Isabelle said: “We decided to get involved with Code Club because we believe that by generating interest in the possibilities of computer sciences from an early age, we can inspire the next generation to take an active role in innovation and creating technology instead of simply teaching them how to use it.”.

“THE POWER STATION WAS REALLY EXCITING. I LIKED THE TUNNEL AND THE GAS TANKS – I THINK MY FRIENDS WOULD THINK IT WAS REALLY COOL”. The 9th St Peters’ Beavers troop recently visited Guernsey Electricity for a tour of the power station at Northside. 24 beavers, 12 parents and their troop leader Laura Le Maitre were shown around the control centre and two of the stations, including the new engine 2D, by senior maintenance engineer, Lloyd Le Page. The troop learnt how electricity is generated in the station and how it gets from the station to people’s homes around the island. They were also taught about the cable link with France and were shown the map of the cable link in the control room. Beaver Josh Bisson, aged 7, described the power station as ‘epic’: “The power station was really exciting. I liked the tunnel and the gas tanks – I think my friends would think it was really cool.” “We really enjoyed showing the Beavers around the power station and teaching them about electricity,” said senior maintenance engineer Lloyd Le Page. “The power station is a great asset for Guernsey, not many places can say they have a fully operational power station on their doorstep. It’s brilliant that young people have the opportunity to tour the site especially when so many are learning about electricity at school, it can really help bring their learning to life.” Tours of the Guernsey Electricity power station are available to schools, community groups and members of the public. Children at Wesley Pre-School have a brand new climbing frame, thanks to Investec. The Investec Charitable Trust donated £1,000 to the preschool to go to towards the cost of the play equipment and a shed for storing toys. The pre-school’s manager, Heidi Abbotts, welcomed the donation. Paula Robinson from the trust said the committee felt that providing play equipment and storage to Wesley Pre-School was a worthy cause; “To meet our criteria the charity or organisation must benefit Guernsey people and where possible the donation should be used to buy something tangible, rather than be added to a large pot of money. Here, the benefits are clear – there are lots of very happy smiling faces and you can’t ask for more than that”. The Investec Charitable Trust has given more than £6,000 to needy causes in the last 12 months. Beneficiaries include Age Concern, The Guernsey branch of the British Red Cross, GSPCA and Vauvert Primary School.

SANDS LIGHTS OF LOVE SERVICE

As you may or may not know, last year the first Sands Lights of Love Service was held here in Guernsey. The Lights of Love Services are facilitated by SANDS (the stillbirth and neonatal death charity) and are candlelit services that give people an opportunity to honour children who are no longer with us, before we celebrate Christmas. The service was held at the Forest Church, and was held simultaneously with similar services in Huddersfield, London, Stirling, Nottingham, Norfolk, Portadown, Cardiff and Liverpool. This year’s service will be held at 7.30pm on Friday, 6th December. Rev Linda Le Vasseur is again hosting this lovely service at the Forest Church. Everyone is welcome at the service, and especially those who have been affected by the death of a child, at any age or stage of that child’s life. People who are unable to attend the service can also contact me and I can hang a tag on the tree of remembrance for the child that they want to honour and remember.

Guernsey Electricity’s annual calendar has gone on sale this week with all proceeds going to the GSPCA. The calendar will feature views of the island as captured by Guernsey Electricity employees. The stunning images were submitted as part of a competition for staff to show off their creative talents. 12 winning images of local beauty spots such as a snowy Vale Church and Lihou Island in the summertime were chosen to appear in the calendar which will be available from the Guernsey Electricity shop, Pet Cabin, Vets for Pets, the GSPCA, Oatlands, Guernsey Airport, Queens Road Doctors Surgery and Co-op Homemaker for a minimum £2 donation to the GSPCA. Seven different staff members have contributed to the final product. Steve Le Feuvre’s work appears four times within the calendar; for January a shot of Cobo, in February Les Tielles, an October scene at Vazon Bay and the Hanois lighthouse for November. Antony Gilman produced the shots for April and June of the Bluebell Wood and Lihou Island. Stacey Le Page’s photograph ‘Island’s View’ features in May and she also captured ‘Snowy Vale Church’ for the festive month of December. August and September are made up Brian Thorburn’s Grand Havre and St Peter Port Harbour. Dave Smart and Adam Greening also provided their pictures of Fort Grey and Les Becquet Lane. Last year the calendars benefitted Les Bourgs Hospice and raised a total of £1,230. Overall winner Steve Pattimore, Company Secretary, was given the chance to choose the charity that would benefit from the sales as well as having his image of Grande Havre appear on the front cover of the calendar.

SURE COMMUNITY FOUNDATION SECURES FUTURE LETTING AT ST SAVIOUR’S COMMUNITY CENTRE

The ability to let available rooms at St Saviour’s Community Centre has been secured thanks to a donation from the Sure Community Foundation. The charity has given the centre £3,208.73 to buy a raft of new safety equipment, including fire alarm sensors, signs, directional lighting and extinguishers. Without the upgrade to its fire safety equipment – which has now been completed – the centre would have been unable to rent out its rooms. Karen Jagger from the foundation said it was just as important to support initiatives such as this as it was to fund projects with a more visible impact. ‘Things like fire safety equipment are so expensive and yet are vital for places such as community centres to continue operating safely and within regulations. The Sure Community Foundation is very pleased it has been able to secure the future of St Saviour’s Community Centre in this way,’ she said.

RBC SERVES UP NEW COOKER TO BAILIWICK SCOUTS Guernsey and Alderney Scouts now have a brand new industrial gas cooker installed at their Les Maingys campsite, thanks to a donation from RBC Wealth Management. The cooker will be used by local Scouts, schools and visiting groups, and provide the opportunity for young people to learn how to cook and bake. Julie Bulpitt Bailiwick Commissioner said: ‘We are very grateful to RBC Wealth Management for their kind donation, which will be a valuable addition to our facilities. We support the local Scouts and schools, as well as visiting schools and youth organisations that camp at Les Maingys Activity Centre and Campsite. Our old equipment was well past its sell-by date, so to have something as modern as this oven is marvellous. I’m sure we’ll see some lovely culinary creations being whipped up in the coming months!’ LE RONDIN SCHOOL’S GARDEN OF REFLECTION A garden of reflection at Le Rondin School should be completed by the summer. After an extensive fundraising effort, work on the garden, which is at the back of the school, began during the October half-term holiday. Lagan Construction Group donated time and resources to clear the area, which was under-utilised. ‘It’s a real sun trap but was underused and so we decided to create a garden of reflection. There may be children who come to Le Rondin who have a shorter life expectancy. The garden will be used as a place where we can remember them and also provide pupils with a quiet place to enjoy and an outside area to learn in,’ said headteacher Paula Sullivan. The garden is the last community project being undertaken by Lagan Construction Group before work on the airport ends and the company leaves the island. ‘Le Rondin has been one of our neighbours over the last few years and we know how much the children have enjoyed seeing the tractors and machinery being used in and around the airport. When we were asked if we could help them clear and prepare the area being used for the garden of reflection, we had no hesitation in saying yes,’ said Keiran McIlhatton from Lagan Construction Group. ‘Funds raised in memory of Callum Eborall, who was a pupil of Le Rondin, have been used to buy a water feature, Aid Reaching Children has provided us with a fantastic seating area from money raised by the Santa Fun Run, Lovell Ozanne has given their time to design and project manage the project and we have used the money from the Guernsey Press and Moonpig Cash4Schools initiative to cover additional costs,’ said Mrs Sullivan.

2009’s Funny women Awards, John Moloney - winner of Best Live Performer at the London Comedy Festival and Geoff Whiting who once performed in a pod on the London Eye for ‘The One Show’.

Beau Sejour car park was packed all weekend by an estimated 10,000 Guernsey residents of all ages that flocked to the Guernsey Press Homelife Show 2013. With 60-70 exhibition stands the event was the first of its kind in the island for 6 years. Live

cooking demonstrations were held by top inland chefs including Channel Island Chef of the Year Daniel Green (The Auberge), Chris Sloan and James Ferguson (Sueco), Fenella Maddison (Torteval Cheese) and Simon McKenzie (Urban Kitchen).

What is The Lodge? The Lodge is a Ski Chalet, in Verbier, one of the Alps and the World’s best ski resorts. We offer luxury accommodation in both winter and summer, and offer a level of service and comfort that is second to none. How many rooms do you have? We have 9 double bedrooms, and a bunk room for up to 6 children. We sleep 24 comfortably. What services do you provide? We offer everything you need to take all of the stress and hassle out of your holiday, whether it is in summer or winter. It can be as simple as getting the kids ready and delivering them to Ski School, or as complex as organizing Heli transfers for 20 people to fly in formation over Lake Geneva as an incredible start to their holiday. We start contacting guests as soon as we have their confirmation through from our London Office, and that can be as long as 8 months away from their arrival date, ensuring that no detail is overlooked, no matter how big or small.

We have 4 Chefs working, and they prepare a menu every day, based on the preferences of your group, whether you would like 7 nights of tasting menus, or 7 nights of home cooked favourites, whatever we prepare will be the very best.

I see there is a wine cellar. How do guests know which wine to choose - what is the most expensive bottle you have to serve? We match a Red and a White wine with the evening menu every day, and base it on your preferences and what the Chefs have prepared for that evening. We often have requests for incredible wines, and have a couple of special wines in the cellar here. Any ‘important’ guests come to stay? All of our guests are special guests! We welcome everyone with the same importance and special attention. So Gareth, how did you end up as General Manager at The Lodge? When I was 16, I told my parents I would only want to work for 2 people; myself, or Sir Richard Branson. When I was doing my first ski season in Verbier in 2005, I met the management couple who were setting up The Lodge and after a few months of interviews and chats with them I started working at The Lodge in October 2007. I started as one of the 9 staff, as the Activities Coordinator, ensuring all of the guests had the means and tools to do exactly what they wanted, when they wanted. I worked my way up to Assistant Manager and then in 2011 the opportunity to work on Necker Island came about, and after a grueling few months of interviews I was offered the Deputy Manager position. I stayed on Necker for one year, at which point the GM position at The Lodge was available, it was a natural progression, and I started here again in June 2012. After gaining the ‘Patente’ or Licensee of The Lodge it was official and I have been here since!

Were you present during the well documented lightning strike on the island? I was indeed. I was running the Island at the time of the fire, as the General Manager was on vacation. The incredible thing about the fire was the reaction from the staff we had on the island at the time, who pulled out all the stops and incredibly, just 10 weeks post fire, we welcomed guests back onto the island. I remember holding a staff meeting the day after the fire and all I had was a tatty piece of paper and a pencil I had found, that was the start of the rebuild process! The family was also incredible and within a day or so after the fire we sat and started to rethink the new house with the whole family. Testament to that is the incredible effort that has been put in by all of the rebuild team, who managed to reopen the house just 2 years post fire.

s e p a c s a se ARTIST PROFILE : CLAIRE GAUDION

Guernsey-born designer Claire Gaudion launched her luxury accessories label in 2012, after graduating from the London College of Fashion and working for several years in London’s fashion industry. We met up with Claire to talk about her new collection and what inspires her.

When did you first begin to get creative? I have a very creative family from whom I have learnt many craft skills - sewing and textiles, basketry and carpentry. Plus, I have always been very interested in music. All of these creative influences have added to my work today. How would you describe your designs? My designs have a strong emphasis on colour, pattern and print, and unique to my collections are their links to Guernsey, which is my inspiration. My ‘geometric seascapes’ collection sums up my signature style with its striking and expressive mix of patterned scarves which feature zigzags and stripes weaving together in greens or red and yellow tones, speaking of the tides in the Gouliot caves of Sark. Abstract geometric layered-coloured prints tell stories of the island’s changeable seas at Les Tielles and the colours of the dramatic and beautiful cliffs at Icart as well as seascapes at Albecq, Rocquaine, Vazon, Rousse, and Oyster Point. Autumn/Winter this year also saw the launch of an illustrated scarf range in collaboration with my brother (and artist) Tim Gaudion. We have created a range of silk wool scarves which feature Tim’s paintings of Guernsey’s coastline.

What mediums do you use and why? Whilst most of my design work is digital, I design using a mix of old and new print, pattern and weave techniques. A lot of my design ideas begin at my hand-weaving loom, where I explore colour combinations and weave structures. In addition to selling my woven scarves, these woven designs are then also translated into bold graphic designs, which are then digitally printed. Digital textile printing allows for the use of unlimited numbers of colours and amazing detail in designs and so is perfect for my work. It also makes good environmental sense too. Printing digitally uses half the ink of screen printing methods and water consumption is reduced by approximately half. Are there any particular issues or difficulties you ever encounter? There is always fine tuning required with any production process; to select the right materials and manufacturers to work with etc. But as I am producing my collection in Britain there are generally no major difficulties. Furthermore, sometimes ‘happy accidents’ in design can become great creations! Which artists or designers have inspired you? I am inspired by many other designers and artists including Bess Nielsen, who creates beautifully refined textiles, which are tranquil and textural and the beautifully composed weaving of Jun Tomita, the Japanese master weaver, who has a great skill in blending colours and textures together. Sonia Delaunay - who was also a colourist and textile designer as well as an artist – created such striking works in bold colours and geometric shapes, and Paul Klee, whose paintings are so full of rhythm; I love the way he used many different gradients of colour and tone in his paintings. As a designer, what do you find inspires you to start creating? Watching the sea! The coastal landscape of the islands is one of my biggest inspirations and I start to ‘see’ designs and create ideas whilst I am walking around the cliffs or just sitting watching the sea roll in, making ripples on the sand and exposing our stunning granite coastline.

How does your work differentiate from other artists and designers? I think that my collections stand-out for reasons such as their unique colour palettes and strong graphics. My customers also enjoy knowing that my designs hold stories; stories of landscapes and island seascapes.

Autumn/Winter this year also saw the launch of an illustrated scarf range in collaboration with my brother (and artist) Tim Gaudion. What projects do you have planned for the future? It has been a great first year, with some great new stockists and some great press coverage including The Times, Elle Decoration, Eurowoman DK and Neverunderdressed.com. Plus, this month a PopUp Shop in Piccadilly, London. I am selling my collections internationally and am stocked in independent fashion boutiques, as well as online fashion stores and art centres, including the Barbican, London and Guernsey’s fashion boutique, Gwyneth and Grey, among others which can all be found on mywebsite, www.clairegaudion.com. This year I presented my new collections to international buyers at the trade show Top Drawer, London and won ‘Best New Fashion Product’ at the show, which was fantastic. I plan to show again next year in London, find more new stockists via such trade shows and by working with my agent in Paris. There are some other ideas on the horizon, but, as a new label, I want to focus on my scarves and stationery collections and create a really strong brand identity.

an’s fortitude was once measured by his sense of adventure and accomplishment; explorers were deemed to be the epitome of manliness… Strength, stamina and wisdom are what maketh the man. Guernsey is in for a treat, as Sir Ranulph Fiennes, who personifies that approach, is set to visit us at St James for one night only on Thursday 3rd April 2014, courtesy of Sure. Renowned for his expeditions, at 69 ‘Sir Ran’, as he is affectionately referred to, has been recounting tales of adventure to audiences the world over. Noted as one of the world’s top motivational speakers, his inspiring message is relevant to anyone - male, female, young or old. Fiennes’ entertaining and inspiring presentations are adapted not only to suit each audience or conference theme but also to keep up with his latest expeditions. The evening on the 3rd April next year will give the Guernsey audience real-time positioning in this man’s remarkable career. A burning message of personal motivation relevant to any demanding activity in the increasingly competitive business field is guaranteed to fire up any audience with enthusiasm. Only recently, Sir Ran set off to take on the incredible challenge of a six-month 2,000 mile walk across the South Pole, in the perpetual darkness of the Antarctic winter where temperatures can plummet to -90C: The coldest journey on Earth. Things didn’t all go to plan and resulted in Sir Ran reluctantly being forced to retire the expedition, reportedly due to frostbite after having to fix a ski barehanded in temperatures of -30C. Fiennes' hero, Captain Robert Falcon Scott, wrote "great God, this is an awful place" when he finally reached the south pole a century ago, before freezing and starving to death with his team on the return journey. Apsley Cherry-Garrard called his own trek "the worst journey in the world". Ernest Shackleton abandoned another expedition as the weather closed in to save the lives of his crew.

Those journeys were made in the summer. Nobody before had attempted crossing the pole in winter. He knew it was going to be hard. In a prepared statement before he set off, Fiennes said: "This will be my greatest challenge to date. We will stretch the limits of human endurance. Britain and the Commonwealth has a strong heritage of exploration, from Captain Cook 300 years ago to the present day. As such, it is fitting that a Commonwealth team should be the first to fulfil this last great polar expedition." He is intending to try again. His previous exploits have seen Sir Ranulph travel up the White Nile in a hovercraft; parachuting onto Europe’s highest glacier; forcing his way up 4,000 miles of the mightiest rivers of Canada and Alaska; trekking on foot and unsupported to the North Pole and the great Transglobe expedition in which Fiennes and his companion Charles Burton became the first men in history to reach both Poles. In November 2003, Ranulph Fiennes and Mike Stroud completed an incredible seven marathons in seven days: a global adventure that began in the wilds of South America and finished in New York's concrete jungle. In March, 2007, despite former frostbite injuries, limited climbing experience and a fear of heights, at the age of 63, Sir Ran successfully climbed the North Face of the Eiger to raise money for the Marie Curie cancer charity after losing his wife, mother and sister to the disease over an 18-month period. At the age of 65 and at his 3rd attempt, he conquered Mount Everest, telling the BBC, "This is the closest you can get to the moon by walking." As a measure of his abilities, Sir Ranulph was selected by IBM New York as their chief motivational speaker out of 700 top international speakers. Any review of his presentations and talks read of tales delivered with dry wit and a wry smile. Described as spellbinding and inspirational on every level, an evening with Sir Ranulph Fiennes at the St James looks set to be a highlight for the new year. It’s not everyday you get the hear stories from a modern day hero.

GUERNSEY ARTS COMMISSION CELEBRATES 5 YEARS ON Guernsey Arts Commission is celebrating their fifth anniversary with a birthday party, Yes, that’s right, it means cake. Oh, and a retrospective exhibition of posters of previous shows from the past five years. The Commission was set up in 2008 by the States of Guernsey to help the arts in the Bailiwick to grow and involve more people in the arts. Since it’s origins over 100 local and international artists, including world class names such as Peter Black, Andy Goldsworthy and Antony Gormley, have been involved in over 20 exhibitions in the Commission’s main venue, the greenhouse, currently situated within the Guernsey Information Centre. Hundreds of organisations and individuals have been supported through the Commission’s grant scheme to organise arts projects and events including Sark Folk Festival, the Town Carnival, concerts in Candie Gardens and the Vale Earth Fair.

BECAUSE QUALITY MATTERS

The Commission also runs key arts events in the Island’s calendar with Dance Month, Arts Sunday and Art on the Beach hitting the headlines this summer. The community arts team has worked with hundreds of children, young people and vulnerable adults on estates, in youth clubs and other residential, health and care settings over the past five years. Further opportunities for people with limited access to the arts are being developed through community groups and the Health and Social Services Department, so watch this space. With the aim of providing a strong voice for arts in the Bailiwick, the Commission is currently refreshing their website www. arts.gg where arts organisations and artists, performers, musicians and other creative individuals can add their details to the directory and take part in the conversation through their blogs, twitter feeds, images, videos and sound tracks. The exhibition 5 Years On opened on Friday 22 November and will run into the New Year, it is open weekdays from 9am to 5pm and Saturdays from 9am until 1pm.

COMING OUT OF HIS SHELL Words | Sara Felton

Launched in early 2012 ormerland.com is a Channel Islands based website set up to showcase the broad array of creative people, and their work, across the islands. From painters to photographers, poets to architects, everything creative goes! The beauty of the site, it’s not only a one stop shop for those seeking out creative inspiration it also provides artists with the chance to submit their own work for us to see. On top of this you can now both buy and sell from the site, the online shop went live late last month, just in time for all of those Christmas purchases.

We grabbed a coffee with the sites Guernsey based creator, Ross Weston and asked him to tell us where his inspiration for ormerland.com came from. The original concept was drawn up in January 2006, as a graphic designer I am always exploring different resources from around the world and had come across similar sites, and I wondered why we didn’t have something closer to home that showcased local artists. I knew a great deal of artists locally, but knew there must be even more that I didn’t know about. I started off with a small database of artists, who I got in touch with muting the idea of ormerland.com I knew I wanted to start small and build up over time. The initial responses were fantastic and we stared with a simple blog style site that enabled people to showcase their work. Since those early days the site has changed and moulded several times over the years as new social developments fully emerged online. And we’ve now just introduced an online shop. More on that later. Why did you call it ormerland? I took ages over the name, I came up with lots of fancy acronyms, most of which didn’t capture what the site was meant to be about and then a friend of mine said ‘why don’t you chuck in Ormer, it’s local to the channel

islands’ and as the site was to be dedicated to showcasing creative people from the region, the Ormer fitted the scene perfectly. How do you think the internet has changed the consumption of art? This is why I delayed the start of the site initially, the idea came about at a time when social media was growing but hadn’t quite become so ingrained in peoples lives. I wanted to keep things as short and simple and alow the site to add value to peoples experience of art rather than be a replacement. I think the internet provides a great stepping stone, if the work is presented well enough online it provides a route in to consuming art in person. Would you like to see a Tate Guernsey or major art gallery within the Channel Islands? Yes definitely. We’ve got some amazing artists within the Channel Islands and it would be fantastic to provide them with a physical place to showcase their work. I’d love to see some kind of creative collaboration in the future. So would we Ross, we think this is an idea with legs! I guess it’s unfair to ask, but what’s your favourite type of art and do you have a favourite artist? That’s like asking what my favourite colour is, it changes all the time! But I guess that’s probably quite fitting with why I created the site.

Are you an artist yourself, if so what’s your medium? I’m a musician, a drummer and of course I’m a graphic designer so I’m lucky enough to be creative everyday. But I guess artistically ormerland.com is my creative adventure. So you’ve just introduced an online shop, tell us about it... I’ve tried to make it as simple as possible, ultimately everyone needs to make money, so this provides artists with an avenue to generate an income from their work and you a place from where to buy it. Artists can link to the shops from their Facebook pages or you can visit ormerland.com to see who’s selling what. I believe this is a facility that isn’t currently being offered by anyone else in the Channel Islands. I don’t want the site to be commercial, it would have been easy to have it plastered with adverts, but that would away from what we’re trying to achieve. Do you have anything else planned for the future? We’re going to add in a forum for artists a place to get people talking, perhaps even live chats with artists where they can share their experiences and tips of the trade. And of course there is always room for new artists, if you want to get involved then feel free to get in touch.

A

chance remark from a cousin about how much she had enjoyed a burlesque party in the UK set me thinking - hum, I could do that here in Guernsey as no-one else is teaching burlesque. The Arabesque Dance Company was born and established as the first Burlesque dance group in Guernsey. One advantage of my advancing years is that I have the experience and knowledge and real memories of the type of dancing we now perform. That was back in January 2012 and we have gone from strength to strength with more than 30 girls/ladies enjoying dance and finding their inner feminine, flirty, cheeky and fun side. So many of these lovely ladies have commented on how much more confident they feel - no matter what size, shape or age they are. Every one is finding a part of them which previously may have been hidden. It is an hour or two each week just for them to be someone else for a moment and have great fun.

What do you do when you’re not dancing? Company Director/Dance Teacher / Choreographer/ Grandmother How long have I been doing so and why did you start? I started dancing aged 9 including ballet, tap and modern and qualified as a teacher when I was 18. I am now 65 so that’s 56 years - wow! I danced professionally for five years including in Italy, Jordan and all over the UK and taught dance for three years in my own dance school in London before settling down to family life. After that came various teaching positions in private schools and sports clubs for dance and aerobics which fitted in with raising my children.

After just eleven months we put on our first show at the Peninsula Hotel, dancing for 200 people. I was absolutely delighted with the response - the thrill of a standing ovation cannot be described, and this only reinforced our determination to continue and improve. We performed in a second show in March at the Carlton Hotel and again the response was just great. Following on from that we performed four dances for Liberation Day to a huge crowd of people. The icing on the cake for us was the honour of performing the cabaret at a dinner dance for a trust company at the St Pierre Park Hotel in October. So far from classes and the shows we have donated to C.L.I.C. Sargent the sum of £15,500 since starting in January 2012. We are all proud and delighted to be giving our proceeds from shows and classes to charity - C.L.I.C. Sargent specifically. I chose this charity through the tragic loss of our eldest son five years ago and this is a way of honouring and treasuring his memory. I am so lucky to be having a second precious career and I have made such lovely new friends. I look forward to each class and being involved with the girls in all sorts of ways - we laugh and enjoy our dancing and that can only be a good thing.

Do you practice for anyone at home? Well...that depends on whether there is football on T.V!

I really love Burlesque dancing, it gives me a positive outlet for any stress, and a real giggle. Di is a fantastic teacher and they are a wonderful group of girls, we look out for each other. I do it to help support Di and CLIC Sargent. Do you practice for anyone at home? If you class dancing with joggers and an iPod then yes, I do dance at home but the costume is only used for rehearsals and shows. I wouldn’t want to ruin my feathers.

LYNDSEY WOODWARD MISS MONEYSHOT Day Job I am a very lucky full time Mummy of two lovely boys. I love what I do but it is so good to have something outside of nappies/dummies/the school run and all the various toddler groups I attend. I got back into dancing through Di’s belly and Bolly classes after the birth of my second son, as I think it is easy to lose your identity after having children. I never imagined that the decision to go back to dancing could lead to so much fun and would result in making such great new friends. I will never look back! How long have you been dancing and why did you start? I have been dancing since I was a tot, it’s what I love to do. However, I only discovered my “inner showgirl” (!) when Di introduced Burlesque to her belly dance and Bollywood classes at the beginning of last year. I have been hooked ever since! nce cold weather strikes odd things can start to happen, you realize that skin can be both oily and chapped at the same time. Your nose goes bright red. This is intensified by the shopping temperature roller coaster designed to heighten our emotions in an attempt to induce mass ‘panic buying’. You’re hot, you’re cold – then you step into a shop and boil to death as you are blasted by a torrent of hot air, you sweat, you freeze.

orking on a magazine is a varied lifestyle. In the Channel Islands the areas of interest and interaction are usually defined by our coastline as we strive to maintain a Glocal standpoint, inward looking but with a global philosophy.

Occasionally we get to engage in subject matter that is not only relevant to you lot, our beloved readers, on a local level but also take in elements of the real world. Earlier this year we were invited to see what Waitrose has in store for us this Christmas. But the event wasn’t in a local store... Waitrose flew a gaggle of local journalists to London and transferred us to the beautiful buildings of the Royal Academy of Engineering to learn about their fantabulous Christmas goodness, straight from Heston’s mouth.

Normally there’s opposition to UK brands and companies moving in to our beloved island as some perceive that they negatively impact on our local producers. However, Waitrose have done it the right way. Shopping at Waitrose is a combination of picking up your locally grown produce whilst still being able to grab a jar of something you’ve only heard of on cooking programmes. Many such things were evident as we were ushered through the entrance by Waitrose partners (it’s a co-op, so that’s appropriate rather than ‘staff’) and guided into the event press room. Tables with multiple tiers of delicious food were visible in every direction. We’d heard a rumour that he of liquid-nitrogen-in-the-kitchen fame would be making a guest appearance to tell us about his relationship with Waitrose and their premium ‘Heston from Waitrose’ (HfW) Range.

Christmas Pudding, which ended up selling for 15 times its face value on eBay. Such was the power of the Heston name. It was clear that this union was a happy one. The application of Heston’s unique approach to Waitrose’s premium product is a match made in culinary heaven. We eagerly sampled a smorgasbord of delicious morsels. The HfW ham hock & piccalilli terrine was a particular favourite. We talked about the traditional turkey and alternatives to consider. Waitrose have a variety of options that make for an alternative selection of afternoon sandwiches this year. Perhaps an Oak-soaked, Stout and Molasses Matured Gammon? or a Highland Forerib of Beef? Heston was quick to point out that potatoes are an important constituent. As Channel Islanders we’re obviously predisposed to Jersey Royals but, considering Christmas is at an inconvenient time of year for those Jersey folk, Waitrose Ready to Roast Goose Fat Potatoes will have to do!

The event spanned several rooms. The second allowed us to meet the Waitrose producers, the men that rear the best of the best in terms of walking Christmas dinners, and also trial the sweet stuff. This Christmas is all about the salted caramel, an ingredient of choice for an self respecting premium sweet snack food. Millionaire shortbread squares with salted caramel will be gracing our Christmas shopping list, that’s for sure.

To further engage with the younger shopper or recipient of such items, a ‘build your own cupcake’ station was set up allowing us to experiment with a myriad of products that can be used to build and decorate your own perfect Christmas cake. Chocolate coated popping candy anyone? We all had a go, and I even managed to get my cupcake efforts back to Guernsey. There are certainly a myriad of choices for those with a sweet tooth. I mentioned the fabled ‘Hidden Orange’ Christmas pudding earlier. This year the range will include a ‘Hidden Chocolate’ variety, inspired by a trip Heston took to Italy. Oh yes. By the time we’d passed through the beauty area and sampled some cocktails we were a little overwhelmed as we entered a room full of flowers... The extent of the Christmas range products from Waitrose is incredible and if your Christmas is to be a decedent one, I’d suggest you make some room in your larder and home for the wonders on offer. Have a merry one.

CHOCOLATIER: BEN LE PREVOST

Chocolatier Ben Le Prevost is doing a fantastic job of making Guernsey famous for its chocolate. Having trained at the local College of Further Education, he embarked on a journey around the world to hone his chocolate crafting skills with some of the World’s finest.

We sat down with Ben at his Mill Street premises and did our very best to secure some samples. What we did walk away with was an image of a generous and passionate gentleman-chocolatier who revels in seeing people enjoy his art. So Ben, what got you interested in chocolate? I was a pastry chef after training full-time at the College of Further Education. I did five or six specialist pastry courses in Germany and the United States. I went to Germany to learn how to sculpt chocolate and so the passion grew. I went to America to continue my craft of sculpting chocolate and revisited the US and did a course, working with one of the Worlds leading experts in chocolate. From being a pastry chef, I saw one of those big chocolate sculptures (gestures with arms) and I wanted to be able to understand how to do it. So it went from there! Was chocolate always the ‘treat of choice’? I think everyone nowadays is brought up enjoying that special little treat in some shape or form. What would have been the treat from your Mother when you were growing up? (who coincidentally walks in as interview begins) Oh it would have been the good old-fashioned Mars Bar. In your opinion, what is the most decadent chocolate at Ben Le Prevost Chocolates? That would have to be the Champagne Truffle. The signature ‘Ben Le Prevost’ Champagne Truffle? (smiling) It’s not really my signature product. Actually, a customer approached me to ask if I could create some for him. It was his favourite type, something that he really adored and was unable to get hold of easily. So I started making them just for him and that’s

how they became a regular feature in my range. Now the Champagne Truffle is one of the most popular items that we do. I’ll get you one to taste afterwards... Outside of the business, what would be the most decadent form of chocolate? A lot of the ‘single origin’ chocolates are extremely popular and extremely unique. They have established themselves almost like wine. Connoisseurs enjoy or test samples and the chocolate can be appreciated from its region. We provide bars from Venezuela, Peru and even Madagascar here. Each bar uses a single origin type bean. The bean has its own flavour characteristics, which gives the chocolate its own unique taste. What about the chocolate you have in your product range? What would be your favourite? I think everyone likes the Miso. It depends what season is. It depends what’s new. What you feel like. It’s a very mood orientated response. What ingredients do you use? We use a lot of local ingredients but also lots from around the world. We’re actually looking to next year and how we can diversify and we’re sourcing ingredients from Hawaii for a new product. Also, we have a special Olive Oil from Spain that we use. It’s good to use local and support local, but also source quality from elsewhere too. We use local herbs like Rosemary and Basil and of course local butter, cream and coffee too. As the Christmas season is well and truly underway, what festive items would you care to ‘share’ with me? Well you’re in luck. We’ve just launched a Mulled Wine chocolate, as well as a Mixed Spice specialist item. There’s also a Chestnut chocolate we’ve created and of course the popular Miso is available. THOMAS HETHERTON - WINE CONSULTANT

Thomas has been an international fine wine broker, buying and sourcing fine wines in Europe, for more than thirty years. He has been living in France for the last eighteen years in the wine-growing region of Cognac, where he has worked with growers producing wine and regional products. He is passionate about good food and wine and enjoys sharing his knowledge with fellow enthusiasts at wine tastings and gourmet dinners. Cured Deli is a relative new comer to the streets of St Peter Port, and one, that if you've not already discovered, you need to add to your list of culinary places to visit. On first glance Cured looks like eateries you'd more commonly find adorning the streets of hip and trendy parts of many cities in the UK. Don't be tempted to walk on by, but instead get yourself inside and meet the fabulous proprietor Nicky, who will be more than happy to regale you with all manner of stories about the fabulous produce available from the deli counter. Whether it's just a simple sandwich you're after, although there isn't anything simple about the sandwich options, or if you've got a little bit more time to sit down at the long wooden table and savour a tasting plate you are in for a real treat. When deliberating over what to eat Nicky asked two questions "How hungry are you, and do you like olives?" The answer to the first question is, I'm always hungry and the 2nd, I absolutely love them. With this in mind we opted for the sharing platter for two and weren't disappointed by our choice, me in particular as my dining partner doesn't like olives, which meant even more for me. What was put before me was the most enticing looking plate of cheese, meats, local chutney's, antipasti, fresh tomatoes, breads and melba toasts, that have no place being relegated to the 1980's. Just one of the selection of artisan cheeses on our plate was Waterloo, brie like in texture and made from milk from Guernsey cows, yet produced in Berkshire. Along side that was the lovely 'Rachel' described by our host as goats cheese 'for those that don't like too much goat' made in Somerset this is indeed a beautiful example of goats cheese, and went beautifully with one of the choice of three fantastic locally produced chutney's on our plate. In the meat section we had slices of chorizo and thinly sliced italian ham which had been marinated in juniper berries, adding to the succulent flavour.Couple all of this with as much Guernsey butter as you can get on your Senners bread and you will be in food heaven. Aside from the fantastic food Nicky is a passionate and knowledgeable lady who is only too willing to talk to you about the origins of the produce within Cured, she also produces specials on a daily basis, which means you'll be privy to some beautiful aromas circulating the deli and may even be lucky enough to be on hand to 'taste-test', the spoonful of broccoli and cornish blue soup I had was delightful, I was only disappointed I didn't have room for a whole bowl.

Thomas represents more than a hundred individual Châteaux and Domaines, and advises and supplies The Christies Group in Guernsey. Below are some of his recommendations from Christies’ new and exciting wine list. 2009 CHÂTEAU CAILLOU, BORDEAUX BLANC SEC

Produced by a Grand Cru Château in Sauternes, this is a fresh, dry and fruity wine that has been matured in new oak casks for six months. It has a wonderful fragrant bouquet, and zesty flavours of ripe citrus fruits. Excellent with seafood, especially Guernsey crab.

2002 GRAVES, CUVÉE PRESTIGE, CHÂTEAU D’ARRICAUD This Château was established by the Count Joachim de Chalup in the late 18th century and is today still owned by his descendants. This is a classic mature Graves produced from merlot and cabernet sauvignon grape varieties, grown on the gravel & clay soil in the commune of Landiras. This is a ripe & approachable claret with soft fruit flavours of plum with hints of spicy wood and gentle tannins. Excellent with Roast Lamb with garlic and rosemary.

PINEAU DES CHARENTES, CHÂTEAU TANGUIDÉ

This special eight-year old Pineau is made by adding Cognac to grape juice, and aging in oak casks. The result is a harmonious combination of fruit, spices, caramel and vanilla. This is perfect at Christmas and very versatile, serve it chilled as an aperitif or as a dessert wine with chocolate or Guernsey ice cream.

The most decadent dish that I have ever made is homemade gnocchi with white truffle. The ingredients are very simple – potatoes, vegetable stock, and white truffle – but the truffles are rich and truly decadent, and when combined with the simplicity of the rest of the ingredients, the dish is mouth-watering.

Last year we were approached by a well-known Guernsey company to host a degustation evening in our Orangery, 10 courses with a different wine carefully selected to match each dish. The evening was a fantastic success, the food was prepared and presented with fine details and consisted of many decadent ingredients such as lobster, caviar, truffle oil and Valahrona chocolate.

A simple, freshly laid free range egg, fried then smothered with generous shavings of fresh truffle would be an ideal starter! Followed by sautéed Foie Gras and Peaches as an indulgence course. For mains, Local lobster poached in butter with more truffles, this time in mayo. And for dessert, another Peach, this time poached in Champagne and served with Fraises des Bois / Wild Strawberries, very ‘Dandy!’

APPETITE NEWS GETTING BACK TO BASICS Jennifer Moore is a holistic health coach and natural foods chef. The techniques and skills she has learned help people find a better balance in their life. She was recently in Guernsey at the invitation of Mourant Ozannes to give businesswomen a working girl’s guide to health and nutrition for those who just don’t have time. As she told Samuel Masters, it’s a case of getting back to basics. I am not a healthy eater. I think I am, but I am not, and certainly not if you listen to Jennifer Moore. On the day we met, Jennifer had run to the coffee shop from her home about two miles away whereas I had just about managed the walk from the car park 100 yards along the road. You think you are doing everything right: moderate exercise, eating low fat/low carb/low taste food and yet at the end of the day, and at the beginning for that matter, you are absolutely cream-crackered.

Jennifer was born in Connecticut, which has a kind of irony about it because it’s where the first hamburger was produced (1895) and is one of two U.S. states (the other was Maine) that never signed the 18th Amendment, which visited prohibition on the rest of America. ‘Eating healthily is not about prohibiting things’, Jennifer protests, ‘it’s about eating what is right for you at that moment in time, listening to your body, and noticing the effects the food you are eating has on your body.’ Women in particular face a challenge because today many fulfill the role of both hunter-gatherer and home-maker; catching dinner and cooking it. The contraction in their available time is inversely proportional to advances in technology. The microwave oven has decimated cooking times, but its convenience has spawned an industry of ready meals. ‘It’s a lifestyle choice’, says Jennifer. ‘We set an expectation of pace in our lives but, by planning ahead you can often save time and money, and still eat better food than you will get out of a packet.’ Jennifer accepts that for business winer diners it’s not as easy as it sounds. ‘Always order at least one course that is raw and has some greens if possible, perhaps a green salad to start. If what you want isn’t on the menu, don’t be afraid to ask for it. You have to listen to your body, not what everyone else is ordering.’

Jennifer tells me, sipping her green tea. ‘It’s not healthy fats [as opposed to the unhealthy fats in processed foods] that put on weight, it’s sugar which also causes spikes in energy levels that are followed by significant lows.’

Jennifer has five simple tips to help you make your step towards a healthier, more energetic lifestyle: •

Get back to basics, aim for an 80/20 split of eating healthy 80% of the time and let yourself have whatever you want 20% of the time; Eat greens at least twice a day; Cut down on caffeine – make it something to anticipate once a day; Drink at least two litres of water every day; Avoid the white stuff – bread, rice, pasta and so on and go for whole grains instead.

Jennifer’s also keen to dispel the myth that healthy eating is expensive. ‘My grocery bill has gone down since I started buying natural ingredients. A few years ago, I had to order many ingredients online. They would take days to come down so it was really hard to achieve any consistency. Now local supermarkets and farm shops stock everything you could need and it is really easy to prepare simple, tasty meals quickly using very healthy ingredients.’

If you follow these simple guidelines, Jennifer says you will discover that making healthy, nutritious meals can be fast and convenient and that, as your body adjusts, you will find more energy to deal with what life is throwing at you.

Jennifer is an advocate of over-cooking rather than over-eating: preparing more food than is needed for a meal and then using the left-overs to create other recipes; or making batches of soup and freezing them for a quick nutritious lunch or dinner.

As she prepared to jog two miles home, fuelled by green tea and enthusiasm, I downed the dregs of my latte and thought about the plod back to the car. On the way back I reckoned I might just stop off at the farm shop for a root around in the vegetables….

Processed food is not only expensive, she says, it’s addictive. ‘There are some experts who claim that a lot of what we eat is the food equivalent of cocaine: we have become addicted to the sugar and, when we try to cut down, the withdrawal symptoms can be very challenging. If you take it easy to start with, wean yourself off the processed food and gradually increase your intake of healthy ingredients you will quickly see the results.’

St J Paint is without doubt one of the most highly reputed jewellers on our Island. A box from Paint’s is Guernsey’s equivalent to the blue Triffany’s box, with engagement rumors following any young man seen entering either of their Pollet Street premises. Mr Paint has always been a special place to me. I remember my dad taking me there when I was just a little girl to admire the replica solid silver crane they still house today. Every fully functioning intricacy has been hand-made taking more than 1,700 man-hours and 3 kilos of Britannia silver. It was dubbed ‘the best piece of silver to come out of the Channel Islands in 200 years’ by Michael’s son Paul who runs the business with him. And there is no better home for it than the hallowed walls of the family store. Mr Paint has been building his silver collection since he was a young boy, following in his Father’s footsteps, a watchmaker who owned the original shop on Mill Street. The collection contains more than 80 pieces either made in the islands or which have links with them. Channel Islands silver is apparently very scarce and valuable. The first item Michael purchased for his collection was a 1776 cream jug over 50 years ago. Sourced in London, it cost £7 – a fair amount of money in those days. The

collection has now grown from a suitcase stowed away under his bed to include treasures such as a huge and beautifully intricate silver eperne and silver tea urn gifted to the Island from the States of Jersey after their assistance with the Corn Laws in 1822. Also to be found are a 1680 sugar caster, a sword from 1725 found in a wall at the top of Victoria Road and their rarest piece – a Guernsey milk jug. It is the history of the silver that captivates Mr Paint. Their hallmarks can be traced back over the past 900 years. Many of the marks on Channel Island silvers have an unmistakable French appearance with the fleur-de-lys typical of marks on French plates of the period. There is no mistake that there is a certain magic being tucked away above the high street, surrounded by cabinets full of history and beauty. I especially like the jewellery. ‘They had more time to put in the extra detail that, with increased labour costs, would just cost too much today’ Mr Paint explains. The added exclusivity of older items explains why the antique market is busier than it has ever been with pieces brought into the shop every day by individuals, probates and dealers. Now is a good time to buy, Mr Paint advises me. He’s right, of course – our money isn’t doing much in the bank at the moment. Wouldn’t you prefer it to be nestled around your neck in the form of a beautiful necklace or ornament you can sit back and admire? Q: Tell us what inspired you to start your own business? Despite loving underwear, I had always struggled to find the right fit and not enjoyed the buying process. I was disenchanted with being told I was a particular size and left in a small changing room with a pile of bras which didn’t feel right but not being sure why. I think it should be an enjoyable process and that you should end up with a good looking bra

that fits well. Shops in Brighton and Paris were a big inspiration to my feeling that people ought to be able to buy adult toys in the same welcoming environment you would expect for any other purchase. Q: What did you do prior to starting the business? I worked for a local trust company which was quite young when I first joined it. Q: Did that teach you any lessons that helped you succeed? It helped me see that I had my own ideas and a strong sense of how I wanted to do things, and ultimately gave me the push I needed to go out on my own. Ironically a Corporate Governance masters degree that I started to help me develop within my finance job has ended up being more relevant to my own business as it has covered areas such as cashflow and supply chain management. Q: What is the toughest lessons that you have learnt since starting your own business? Cashflow has the power to make or break your business. You know this before starting out but you can’t forget it for a second! It doesn’t matter how good your intentions or ideas are if you don’t have the cash to follow them through. I’ve learnt lots of lessons but I absolutely love what I do in a way that I couldn’t possibly have imagined before starting out. Q: Do you have any funny stories from your business? As you can imagine I have a wealth of stories but of course a lady never tells!

Q: What are your plans for the future? To keep improving the shop and to introduce new ideas for example beautiful maternity bras and bridal underwear in Spring next year. Q: What advice would you give to would be entrepreneurs? Go for it! Just make sure you manage your cashflow and also take care not to get so caught up in the day to day admin that you neglect nurturing your business. Also it’s worth making the time and effort to be social, other people can be such a great source of ideas, feedback and support. Finally, sometimes you can get the message that you can’t succeed in business by being nice, I think that’s such a load of rubbish! A wealthy client from my finance days once told me that he always “left something for the next person” when doing deals and I think that’s a healthy and respectful way to do business. H

ave you ever wondered what’s on the desk of a Web Designer? Cue visions of a

‘Minority Report’ computer set up, floating hologram graphics and perhaps a few handsome Tom Cruise look-a-likes tapping feverishly at their workstations. Indulge have recently moved into new offices on Lefebvre Street in order to meet their burgeoning requirements. Over the past four years the company has grown from Pat and Russell into a team of eight full-time digital professionals including web designers, digital marketing experts and web developers. If, like me, you are slightly ‘old school’ and still wildly impressed by seeing two computer monitors side by side on one desk, then you will not be disappointed when you walk into the Indulge media offices. Not only does Patrick (or ‘Pat’ to his friends) have two very large monitors on his desk, one a giant 27’’ screen impressively balanced atop a stack of .net magazines, he also has a polished buffalo horn glistening proudly under the office spot lights. It’s a remnant of his recent stag celebrations and although now used only for drinking water (rather than hard liquor) the subtle bovine aftertaste present with every swig, spurs immediate flashbacks of a misspent but thoroughly enjoyable week in the mountains with his dearest friends. The second item that catches my eye on Pat’s desk is a certified Google Visitor Pass. Yes he has seen Google from the inside, an experience he describes as “mind-blowing”. Apparently there is a whole floor dedicated to leisure - with an exercise space larger than all of the gyms in Guernsey combined. “The Google offices also have a huge cafeteria, restaurants, coffee machines on every corner, a library, open seating areas with comfy recliners and a terrace complete with vegetable garden and allotments” explains Pat. This office has been designed so that employees need never leave. Needless to say, Pat picked up a few ideas to implement at their own smart new offices…

Whilst the Segways, recliners and cafeteria are waiting to be installed, Pat is making do with a loyalty card from Pasty Presto – and he’s one stamp away from a free coffee! But it’s not just coffee being drunk around here.... He also has a much-loved Dunkin Donuts mug for his tea, bought on a trip to Boston during his time at Cable and Wireless. Three suspect ageing lemons have been eyeballing me since I walked in but it is explained that hot lemon water is very refreshing in the morning and provides a “zingy” wake-up call. Whatever does it for you dude. As you would expect from the Director of a tech agency there are a few gadgets lying around - Pat has recently discovered the joys of photography and a rather professional looking Canon EOS 600D is proudly perched on his desk. There is also a meaty looking Gucci designer watch, a 30th birthday present from his new wife Martine (not that he had an old one - they were hitched in October) and some fancy wireless headphones with a noise reduction function, for when he needs to shut out the world and focus on designing websites. An array of cards, mainly ‘Thank You’ types, from satisfied clients occupy a corner of the desk – a testament to how well respected Indulge are and also the friendships they have formed with their clients over the years.

They work with a wide range of brands, from small family-run businesses such as Cranfords Estate Agents to huge multinational companies such as Specsavers. I ask Pat what item on his desk best represents him as a person. I’m slightly concerned that it’s his BluRay boxset of ‘Dexter’ (the hit series that chronicles the bloody rampage of a serial killer), but thankfully he points me towards a red, 1962 VW split-screen camper van made out of Lego, given to him by his mum for his recent 32nd birthday and painstakingly built from scratch. I’m impressed with his Lego skills. On reflection, perhaps it is this attention to detail that has made Indulge such a success. Not only have they founded a successful business during a period of economic uncertainty, but they have also established a reputation for being one of the best website builders in Guernsey. Did I mention they are the only ISO9001:2008 accredited digital agency in the Channel Islands? Now the question is, has Pat paid enough attention to the fact that I’ve swiped his Pasty Presto loyalty card and am about to claim his free coffee? Indulge Media Ltd is a creative digital marketing and web design agency that was founded in 2009 by two school friends, Russell Isabelle and Patrick Cunningham.

There are a million ways to spend money recklessly and a never-ending stream of people advising you on how to do it well. But there are far fewer ways to conserve and watch it grow. If you had a spare trust fund gathering dust or inheritance earmarked for investment, how would you decide what to invest in? To achieve success with your investments you need to realise that it’s not how much money you make but how much money you keep. So before you go spending all of your hard earned cash on Euro-Disney shares, learn to play the investment game properly.

To the penniless and uneducated, infrastructure funds are collective investment schemes, designed to reward wallets and to some extent conscience, with purchase of hospitals, investments in road development and construction contracts that is quasigovernment backed.

Investment in watches has seen an 83% increase in value and precious metals (specifically Gold) has risen 273%, whilst classic cars have risen a staggering 430%. Specialist funds set up to facilitate purchase of classic cars are thriving but come with an array of regulations and not always guaranteed for return. The only way to profit from these ventures is through capital appreciation over a long period of time and you could be dead before seeing any real wealth. Broadcaster and Celebrity show host, Jay Leno, is the most famous car collector on Earth. Even though he doesn’t have the largest collection (that title is awarded to the Sultan of Brunei whose collection is worth over US$300m) he is renowned for his profit making skills and financial rewards when he acquires new investments. Stanley Gibbons are hugely involved with alternative funds and purchase of rare stamps and signed memorabilia. Currently their rare stamp and autograph portfolios are worth more than £60million. The ‘Three-Skilling Yellow’ stamp produced in 1855 (by mistake) reached US$2.3m in the mid 1990’s and sold for even more at a later auction to an anonymous bidder. Investors seeking diversification are more likely to lean towards

tangible assets like wine, art, stamps and coins. When inflation affects bank deposits and volatile stock markets dictate economies, investing in a vintage red or an ‘Inverted Jenny’ seems a lot more attractive than watching the rise and fall of the FTSE 100. Obviously forgeries and condition is crucial. The investment regulations may differ to that of hedge funds but are equally as important to thoroughly respect in order to secure the value of your investment. The art world recently experienced its grandest sale in history with The Francis Bacon Triptych ‘Three studies of Lucian Freud’, selling for a monumental US$142.4m. Happy customers all round, especially as specialists at Christies had predicted its sale at auction for approximately US$85m. Realistically, only a relatively small percentage of the human population can afford investments like these. However, there are investments that have been made for far less and seen unprecedented return. Hollywood A-lister Nicholas Cage is a keen collector and alternative investor. He was the owner of the first comic book to break the US$2m barrier at auction with the sale of Action Comics #1 - the first appearance of Superman that achieved a whopping US$2.89m and bought for a paltry 12 cents. Jonathon Ross has been known to donate single comics from his personal collection that are worth individually, more than £40,000. Angry urban popstar, Eminem, is known to possess Amazing Fantasy #15 in which Spiderman makes his first appearance. A copy was sold a few years ago for US$1.1m,

a massive hike from a sale a few years prior when an original copy in the same condition sold for US$227,000. That’s a healthy return considering the original copies were purchased for less than 50p. It’s part of an industry experiencing exponential growth, now that movie studios and mega-companies such as Disney own most of the comic book rights. Alternative investments such as these is a far cry from the security of traditional methods but what is comfortable is rarely profitable and every once in a while the market does something so insane that it ruins men, women and small countries.

QUALIFICATIONS SUCCESS FOR ARC Five Asset Risk Consultants employees have gained key industry qualifications. Associate director, Paul Wallbridge, senior investment analyst, Andrew Kettlety, and investment analyst, Luis Brito, have qualified as Chartered Financial Analysts (CFA). Investment analyst Gemma Howe successfully completed the Chartered Institute for Securities and Investment (CISI) Masters in Wealth Management while fellow investment analyst Fay Panagiotakopoulou completed the Investment Management Certificate (IMC) at Level 4 and won the award for longest surname (we added that one ourselves). Paul joined the ARC team in 2001 and undertook the CFA qualifications after gaining the required experience in qualifying investment work. Andrew joined ARC in 2010 having spent six years working in the City of London. For part of this time, he worked for Butterfield Private Bank, where he was responsible for implementing an equity algorithmic trading system and developing the company’s portfolio performance attribution reporting. Luis moved to Guernsey in 2009 and joined ARC as an investment analyst, where he provides investment consulting services to both private and institutional clients. Gemma Howe joined ARC in September 2011 and works within the private client consulting team. Fay Panagiotakopoulou completed the IMC Level 4 qualification after joining ARC in December 2010, working with the private client consulting team. Ms Panagiotakopoulou holds a BSc in Cell and Molecular Biology from Oxford Brookes University and an MSc in Environmental Technology from Imperial College London. While in London, she worked in a research capacity on both Molecular Diagnostics and Environmental Risk Assessment and Management.

TWO SENIOR HIRES AT C5 C5 Alliance Group has appointed Mark Cooke and Vincent Le Gallez to senior positions in its management team, following its acquisition of Itex earlier this year. Mr Cooke has been hired as Head of Managed Services and Operations while Mr Le Gallez has been appointed Head of Sales and Procurement. BUTTERFIELD : 40 YEARS IN GUERNSEY Butterfield celebrated its 40th anniversary in Guernsey at an event held at the Royal Court this month attended by clients, business partners and employees. A number of senior members of the bank attended the event. The business opened its Guernsey office in 1973 as a joint venture with Barings Bank and Trust and in 1989, the Bank of Butterfield was established. Butterfield employs over 170 people in Guernsey and provides a comprehensive range of financial services to high net worth individuals and institutions from its Regency Court offices. The bank’s charitable and community programme has this year included a campaign of supporting local causes to celebrate the anniversary. This included providing financial bursaries to six young local sportspeople to assist them in attending the 2013 Island Games in Bermuda and a donation of funds to the Guernsey Music Service wider opportunities scheme.

The GTA University Centre has promoted one of its long-serving employees to the role of deputy chief executive. Simon Le Tocq has been appointed to the role, which aims to provide clear leadership for the GTA University Centre. Simon, 40, has a BA in English and American Literature, an MA in applied linguistics and an MBA from the University of Southampton. He has been a teacher at institutions across the world including six years at Southampton University where he taught undergraduate and postgraduate courses and co-ordinated the university’s International Foundation Year Programme. Mr Le Tocq is married with two daughters and is one of the main organisers of the Rocquaine Regatta.

JAMIE TO SELL THE GALAXY Galaxy CI has appointed Jamie To as Sales Manager to help grow the business. Having achieved a Diploma in Computer Studies, Jamie has spent the last 15 years working in IT roles in Guernsey, most recently at The Sigma Group and is now looking forward to building relationships with Galaxy CI’s new and existing clients in Guernsey, Jersey and the Isle of Man. Our Island is a breeding ground for creative talent. A recent statistic highlighted that 30% of school leavers embark on a career in media and the creative arts, with many learning their trade under the guidance and enthusiasm of local professionals, whose contracts and success span the globe. But where are these global contracts developed? And what happens when business innovators and creative minds are charged with creating a healthy working environment for their business? How do they ensure growth, happiness and productivity? Gallery were invited into some of the agencies that help shape the marketing, design and advertising world around us. A couple are moving, a couple we couldn’t get to but we think these represent the progressive nature and diversity of the industry

#vintagewickercapsule BLACK VANILLA PR Best feature – vintage The creative space at Black Vanilla PR agency is nothing less than warm and inviting. Managing Director Jade Isabelle, had a specific strategy in mind when choosing the décor and selecting key pieces for the interior design. “I wanted somewhere that clients, friends, colleagues and members of the public could look into Black Vanilla and feel comfortable. Comfort was very important” she explains. A sense of style is apparent from the main entrance to the communal workstation. “I began my career by renting a desk and working with my back to colleagues. When we moved to this space I decided to have a custom-built work desk made to accommodate all of the staff at Black Vanilla, including myself. It was important to be able to talk to my peers without having to send an email and it keeps our PR practice nice and sharp.” The office has a definitive theme. Weathered browns and blacks, antique time pieces and travelled, leather power furniture is scattered around the workspace. Wicker storage cases, solid oak tables and swathes of soft tans and cream give a sense of vintage glamour. From the gramophone on display in the main window, to the stack of weary buckled expedition luggage piled in the corner, Black Vanilla is sleek and unashamedly feminine in its presentation and finish.

#complexsimplicityhub BLIX Best feature – colour tones “The strategy here is simplicity”, explains Director Dominic Bennett. Efficient use of open plan space is the order of the day at Blix. Immediate application of design is noted upon entering the building with a large #welcome sign hanging from the main entrance. “We wanted to move away from corporate colour schemes and ultimately project something a little more fun, something definitely familiar,” explains Dom. In design speak; 637U is the colour of choice for Blix. For the less design orientated, it is the recognizable shade of ‘twitter blue’ that adorns the walls in the Blix office. Large idea boards are standard in design agencies but Blix incorporates a planning wall that stretches the entire length of the office. Careful and considered decisions were made when implemented a productive space. “A re-shuffle of the environment was much needed here. Originally, desks were back to back and we needed to facilitate collaboration so a new working layout was implemented with our team positioned next to, and facing each other. Where they need to be to nurture happiness and effectiveness.” The management office is glass fronted and stretches to the ceiling. Working within a large but limited space is maximized by the use of glass and colour, so no hiding from staff or client. The openplan layout of the main design space into the entrance area ensures immediate interaction with all visitors. Simple, efficient and tailored.

“Our approach was layered and considerate,” explains Chris Betley from BetleyWhitehorne. “The building we occupy is heavily listed and we worked with local architects to engineer a work space that blends the best of both worlds.” What has been achieved is an impressively clean, minimalist space, which devours shade and sprawls upwards into the eaves of the building. Where there used to be a staircase spanning three floors, there is now a huge light shaft with an integrated through-flow air system. A grand structural achievement in a building surrounded by red tape. Having occupied this space for some time, the management team were keen to adapt and convert benign areas into functioning, productive workspaces. With a glass fronted reception area, natural light pours into the immediate welcome lobby, highlighting the BetleyWhitehorne campaigns on display along the entrance wall space. The ground floor is logistics and administrative, tucked away behind clean exhibition walls and soaked in natural light from the sun shaft above them. There is another two floors devoted to design and a top floor executive meeting room fronted with glass, lined with chrome and a sliding door system that connects the creative space to the cobbled streets below. What looks like 35mm photography peppers the walls of the meeting area with a measured and precise organization.

“The more you can do as a boss to create the right environment - to motivate your staff, the more productive and happier they’ll be.” This is the ethos of Managing Director Peter Grange, who has ensured there is plenty to see and interact with in the Oi office. Offshore International (or ‘Oi’ as its commonly referred to) is home to traditional Victorian fireplaces, staircases and stained glass. Wood panels and high definition imagery greet the client as they enter the ‘residence’, which leads directly into the front room of a candy chandeliered, Victorian town house. Running along one side of the greeting area is a large, brightly lit bar with the company values hanging proudly above and upcycled (vibrant patchwork) retrovintage furniture lines the walls. Next to this is the boardroom - a Victorian dining table with all the mod cons, which leads outside into a faux-grassed space complete with pink flamingos and a crocodile head (yes). Bright glass and succulents feature heavily around the entire space and one could be fooled into thinking that this was somewhere in East London. An energetic streak of interior design that is animated and endearing. A traditional carpeted staircase leads into an ideas room, where ornate wooden picture frames take up large sections of the wall. These contain laminate paint (and writing materials) so if inspiration strikes, it can be recorded quickly and effortlessly without having to dash to a desk. Healthy battles are frequently fought in the table tennis room and to ensure productivity, a monstrous and rather menacing caricatured sharks head (mounted on the wall) encourages the design team to produce results.

“We wanted to create a work environment that utilises all space and facilitates ideas” explains Tony Tostevin, Director at TPA. Set over four floors, The Partnership Agency has incorporated radical design into its layout. The main reception funnels natural light from the very top of the building into the foyer, flanked by large dark wood panels that slide back to reveal hidden wash areas. “It’s a warren of bright space that ensures our team aren’t restricted to working in artificial light,” explains Tony. The segments of glass paneled flooring on the upper floors allow guests to peer down into the main lobby, instilling a sense of spatial volume and quirky architecture, reminiscent of London warehouse conversions. Separate floors dedicated to account executives and designers sit beneath the TPA feature room sat at the very top of the building. This planning ‘nest’ is a brainstorming/meeting area, with concave wooden walls on either side of the main boardroom table. Architecturally splendid to look at and thought provoking. “We didn’t want the team or our clients to be too distracted by the view so we limited the amount of glass here. Our windows provide excellent views and natural light and the space really is the perfect environment to promote creativity.”

After five years at their current location, The Potting Shed expanded into the upper floors of the building at the beginning of this year. They stripped the building clean and were keen to start afresh. “We were fortunate enough to refresh a familiar space and begin with a blank canvas,” explains Creative Director Alastair Mitchell. A stand-first window design greets guests upon arrival. It is a huge perspex showcase of favoured design instruments and personal items selected by the team, on show and engineered to engage with anyone fortunate to walk past and appreciate. Examples of brand projects are arranged neatly in the reception area, as well as pale leather loungers and a conversation coffee table beneath a large digital display. The area also features a selection of tempting, pseudo-egg ‘feature’ furniture that beg to be tested. The main design floor is a large, naturally lit open-plan space with desk segments assigned to specific roles. Filling the adjacent entrance wall are crafted shelves stacked neatly with colourful research material and design reference texts. A simple, aesthetically pleasing contribution to the design floor that instills a sense of dedication, education and trade experience.

A photographic studio space can be found on the lower floor that is private, light and airy – and perfectly positioned just below the designers workspace.

The great marketing and exclusive brand grabbed my attention. The logo is not an average company logo, it’s professional and bright giving a fun and enjoyable feel to the Aztec Group. Whilst work is serious you also need to enjoy it and Aztec Group promote a healthy work life balance. I was also attracted to Aztec Group by their commitment to our local community, they sponsor the Aztec Soccer Academy and the Guernsey Rugby Club.

WHAT SORT OF PROFESSIONAL TRAINING DO YOU TAKE? I am currently studying for the ICSA qualification. This includes four modules; Offshore Business Environment, Principles of Trust & Company Law, Basic Accounting and Investments. Once I have passed these four modules I will have gained the certificate level qualification. The next step will be to study towards diploma level which covers; Offshore Trust and Company Administration, Portfolio Management, Business Management and Governance & Reporting. The Aztec Group run their own in-house learning and development programme, Aztec Academy, that ensures all staff receive technical, soft skills, applications and operations training.

WHAT DO YOU DO ON AN AVERAGE DAY? No day is ever the same, which is why I like it so much – there is great variety. On a day-to-day basis I respond to client related issues by email and telephone. My regular tasks are payments of invoices, fees and client bank transactions. Bookkeeping is carried out on a weekly basis and bank reconciliations are completed quarterly. I also attend quarterly Board Meetings. I co-ordinate these meetings and create and print our Board Packs. As an administrator for one of the leading private equity companies I am required to keep corporate records up-to-date and file accordingly.

WHAT IS YOUR NEXT STEP? Well, I am off to Luxembourg on a two week secondment shortly. I will be working on a project and I feel this is a great opportunity and experience considering I have only been with Aztec Group for three months. This will be my first time travelling alone and also living in a foreign country, but I am very excited about it. My next step after Luxembourg will be achieving my professional qualification.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO YOURSELF AS A GRADUATE CONSIDERING THE EXPERIENCE YOU HAVE NOW? The employers will make sure you are a good fit for their business but I would strongly suggest making sure they meet your aspirations and desires. I have been very lucky to fall into an office which I feel is perfect for me but I can imagine getting this wrong could lead to an unhappy work life. As you spend a huge amount of time in work you need to make sure you get this right.

Very cliché, but the possibilities at the moment are endless, especially in the Channel Islands because of the chance you get to work with senior colleagues and clients. Once I’m a qualified accountant there’s scope to move almost anywhere in the world. Personally, I’d like to stay within the PwC network as it is an organisation I feel fits my personality well. Travelling to new places is something I’m passionate about and there are plenty of opportunities to do that within the PwC global network, by transferring to one of its many other member firms in order to gain new and different experiences which I can bring back to the Channel Islands.

WHAT MADE YOU CHOOSE THE COMPANY YOU WORK FOR?

I consider myself a very ambitious and driven individual. I’d studied accounting at both A-Level and Degree-level and had my sights set on joining PwC for some time. Being the top firm worldwide in Professional Services it was a natural choice (although I didn’t think I’d ever have the opportunity straight out of University)! Whilst on my Professional Experience year with Airbus in Bristol, one of my closest University friends, Will Smith (not THE Will Smith) recommended PwC in the Channel Islands. PwC was the only Graduate job application I made and I’d received a contract offer prior to starting my final year at university. The reason I didn’t apply elsewhere is because PwC made it clear during the interview process how valuable I could be to the firm (this is still the case, I think)!

WHAT SORT OF PROFESSIONAL TRAINING DO YOU TAKE?

I opted for the ACCA route as my degree course was tailored to fast-track graduates going into accounting post-University and ACCA is particularly well matched to my knowledge base. When I started with PwC I had already obtained 8 exemptions! Both the ACCA and ACA websites indicate available exemptions for most UK courses, so for anyone applying to universities at the moment, specifically for Accounting or Business/Finance-related courses, I would highly recommend looking on both websites to see how to get the most out of your degree if the Finance sector is something you’re considering in the future.

WHAT DO YOU DO ON AN AVERAGE DAY?

On an average day, I start at 6:45 heading out for a morning jog, before heading to the gym for an early morning weights session. By the time it comes to work, I’m energised and ready to brace the various challenges for the day. Contrary to belief, working your way up at a big company doesn’t mean administrative tasks and making cups of coffee. You’re entrusted from the off and coached into taking more responsibility as you progress through the firm, which is something I personally strive for. As a second year Associate you are encouraged to maximise your own learning experience in tandem with coaching first year Associates on how to improve. When all work is complete, I tend to relax by singing/playing the guitar, reading a book or watching a film.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO A 2013/14 GRADUATE CONSIDERING THE EXPERIENCE YOU HAVE NOW? I would wholeheartedly advise anyone applying to graduate positions to be proactive and determined in their search for a graduate position. When applying for my placement year as part of my University course, I’d applied to 120 different positions. I had the fortunate experience to recruit my successor for the placement I underwent and it was clear who had researched the company and who hadn’t and this was something I used in my application to PwC. I would also advise to undertake any form of work experience available, whether it’s paid or not. A combination of both can really set your apart from other applicants.

Don’t try to be a style magazine; too many on the news-stands and in the freebie bins already. Guernsey isn’t stylish. Just expensive. Celebrate the culture, the architecture, the art/music/theatre/ creative/sport scene in Guernsey and focus on the people with real talent. Well done for doing this - i think it will help instill more faith. Surely I win the advertising package and will be giving something to the island of Guernsey in the shape of increased access to culture!

Tony Carey Meetings Programme sees more signups than ever

The Tony Carey Meetings Programme, designed to enhance business success by bringing business leaders from different sectors together, is now in its third year and has attracted a record number of participants. The innovative idea for business development, sponsored by Carey Olsen, saw 40 participants sign up this year with 20 companies representing the finance, legal and property sectors. In order to fully develop the relationships within the programme, it is divided into three different sections completed over four weeks including the introductory session, the networking lunch and a concluding breakfast briefing where delegates are brought together once again and different approaches to business compared. During the introductory session, participants meet for the first time over breakfast and are assigned a senior professional partner from a different Guernsey company. At this meeting, the pair agree to have lunch within three weeks to discuss a range of issues. The lunch is held at The Old Government House Hotel and is provided complimentary of Carey Olsen.

Investec launches wealth management business in Guernsey

INVESTEC is launching a new wealth management business in Guernsey providing investment management services to local and international individuals, families and locally based financial services businesses. Investec Wealth & Investment (Channel Islands) Limited will be headed up by local director Shaun Lacey. “Investec Private Bank’s former wealth management business is in the process of being integrated into this new company and we will be able to offer a significant increase in the range of high quality, tailor-made investment services across a wide range of asset classes” explains Mr Lacey. “Investec was one of a very small number of firms providing fully integrated investment management services on the island.” He also added that clients would benefit from having their portfolios managed locally. Rupert Stevenson, divisional director for the Investec Wealth & Investment international division, said: ‘We are very excited about the establishment of our new Channel Islands operation, which will provide a robust investment platform for our local and international client base. Investec Specialist Bank already has a high profile in the island and the provision of wealth management services locally will complement Investec’s range of banking products.”

Technology will be the driver of economic change

A recent business seminar hosted by Barclays Wealth and Investment Management heard that technological advances currently revolutionising the manufacturing industry are driving the biggest changes to the global economy. Hosted by Ken Bradley of Barclays, business leaders heard from Kevin Gardiner, chief investment officer for Europe at Barclays Wealth and Investment Management, as well as Paul Markillie, the innovation editor at the Economist magazine. Both speakers outlined their views of the global economy in light of what Mr Markillie identified as the ‘Third Industrial Revolution’ in his renowned article on manufacturing, published in the Economist. According to Mr Markillie, this revolution is being enabled by new technology particularly in additive manufacturing or 3D printing as it is popularly known. “Where previously large scale operations were needed to make manufacturing work financially, new processes mean that businesses can be more nimble: creating prototypes quickly and cheaply. As well as the craft and design market, big players such as Rolls Royce and McClaren are making use of 3D printing in the latest generation of jet engines and performance sports cars.” he said. Mr Gardiner agreed that technology was central to the future of the world economy. “It’s an exciting time for innovation. 3D printers have been a key factor in the ‘maker’ movement, which has energy much like the early days of Macintosh computers. This is where we should be looking for the next worldchanging product innovation.” With Kevin Stewart backing a new incubator programme in the old Post Office building, here’s hoping they’ll be supplying some makerbots.

C5 Alliance Group offers digital start-ups ‘space to grow’

C5 Alliance Group has launched a new offering to help digital businesses in Guernsey. The IT services and business solutions company is offering the use of existing facilities at Itex House, along with various support services, to encourage entrepreneurs and start-ups. This is particularly suited, but not limited to, those in the digital space, such as e-commerce businesses, software developers and digital finance companies. The new ‘tech incubator’ will offer budding businesses office space, meeting rooms, reception services, telephone answering, IT systems and enhanced connectivity with commercial levels of bandwidth. The service will allow a low-risk environment for entrepreneurs to pilot new business models without incurring prohibitively large obligations for premises, leases, internet connectivity and higher headcounts. The proposed open space would feature desk areas, a lounge, coffee facilities, meeting rooms and high broadband speeds. The intention is to provide an ideal setting for those without premises to work, collaborate and network. A subscription fee would allow daytime access to the facilities, which could also be used on a ‘pay-as-you-go’ basis for industry events and presentations.

WHAT’S THE BEST WAY TO SPEND £200,000?

If you’re struggling to decide, look no further than the Aston Martin Vanquish in Skyfall silver and the slew of eccentrically named features that accompanies it. Only Aston Martin could develop a car with ‘Chancellor red’ interior trim, sixspeed touchtronic gearbox and 6.0 litre V12 engine that burps out an impressive 565 brake horsepower. The sports car, currently on offer with all optional extras such as ‘Shadow Bronze’ jewellery pack, carbon fibre twill centre stacked facia’s, twenty inch twenty spoke alloy wheels in ‘satin black with diamond turning’ and carbon fibre side strakes, weighs in as the newest incarnation of the Aston Martin flagship vehicle. Nothing says ‘decadence’ quite like driving a car that costs the same as a small apartment. What you receive as standard, without the fancy trimmings, is wholly impressive too. The Aston Martin spurts out a top speed of 183mph and travels, rather aggressively between stationary and 62mph in approximately 4.1 seconds. If that wasn’t enough for you, the super vehicle comes with ‘lightweight phantom-grey’ carpets.

Now who has those in their car? Owners must expect to inherit great comment and status with the purchase of such a ferociously beautiful machine. Owners must also expect generous gawping from pedestrians, due to its cutting edge aerospace-engineered body and its Cosworth designed roar, especially during startup and launch. The mix of carbon fibre and magnesium alloy screams performance, as does the gargling behemoth of an engine that lurks under the lightweight carbon hood. As so frequently happens, day turns to night and the Vanquish transforms into a high-tech predator. The high-intensity discharge headlamps and LED repeaters, guaranteed to ward off the most fearsome of vampires and/or potential roadkill, burn through the darkness and burst to life. The cockpit spawns, the dials ignite, and the life-force of the Vanquish baths the pilot in

an adjustable electric glow. The interior displays hum, throb and react to the driver’s every whim. The Vanquish is utterly distinctive from the inside out and critics are heralding its design and performance as nothing short of revolutionary. I would have to agree. From the hand-crafted capacitive glass buttons (with built-in illumination and haptic feedback) to the complete overhaul of the cabin environment control systems – Aston have managed to enhance driver comfort and performance whilst maintaining cutting edge design and safety. Put simply, they have developed around the driver. The Vanquish six-speed automatic gearbox is engaged via a row of movement option buttons (park, reverse, neutral or drive) positioned on the central console. Aston Martin has made it even easier to see crowds of peasants gathering behind the

£££££££££££££££££££££££££££££ vehicle, with a reverse activated camera system, appearing in glorious high definition via a recessed screen that appears from the dashboard. This nifty extra aids reversing with computer generated guidance lines. They even adjust to the steering wheel movements in order to plot parking trajectory, which drastically improves accuracy whilst reducing potential damage to the vehicle. But why any driver lucky enough to pilot this machine would want to drive in any other direction than forward is a complete mystery. Even when stationary, the Vanquish looks like it wants to go. The heavy grip steering wheel is packed with gadgets to improve the driving experience. The option to cycle through gears at blistering speed is supported by spring-loaded paddle shift gears, situated neatly behind the racing wheel and grafted to the steering column. The latency between gear shifting is minimal and only an issue for conversational value. Its suspension is reactive and compliments the torque in and out of cornering, only adding to the raw power and agility of the car. Strangely, the boffs at Aston Martin have incorporated rear seating in the Vanquish. Why any respectable driver would want to strap their small children (uncomfortably) into the back and reach brain-melting speeds in a very short space of time is somewhat confusing. The front seats are comfortable and easily accessible but generously crafted for the size zero Russian model accompanying you on your journey. The rear seats should be only used to carry shopping bags or an additional catwalk model. For the sake of passenger comfort, ensure the model is draped lengthways across both seats. The Vanquish eliminates all preconceptions of what a bespoke sports car is. Whilst managing to infuse the unadulterated passion, design and performance of previous models, the new Vanquish is a reimagining of their greatest vehicles and a blueprint for the future. It is a brave and dedicated venture for Aston Martin and put simply, the stuff of dreams. You don’t travel to destinations in a car such as this. You arrive. If it’s good enough for Bond it’s good enough for Guernsey.

Purchasing a car is one of the biggest, most high involvement investments in life. Not many of us would, or could afford to go out and throw down a sack of money to drive away a new set of wheels. It is great to be able to go to a dealer and sit in a car though. ‘New car smell’ can be as potent as pheromones when it comes to inducing desire, particularly in men. However, when it comes to getting exactly what you want and the spec you’re after it’s likely you’ll be putting down a deposit and ordering in. That’s a lot of messing around and it costs time and money. And buying cars isn’t cheap. If your budget doesn’t quite stretch to the Vanquish (left) and you’re feeling frugal then maybe a word with local car importers Bluchip might be an idea. Their cunning ‘import to order’ scheme allows you to get a new vehicle ordered from the UK or elsewhere but with 100% of the VAT off. They’ve been known to supply new / ex demo vehicles up to £20,000 cheaper than main dealers. Take the little Beetle above for example. The list price on that little piece of pastel coloured perfection is £21,055. Bluchip managed to get it for a customer for under £15,000. Not bad. Their approach seems to be a popular one as people look to source specific models and specifications that may not be stocked on-island by the main dealers. There’s a new mini and it’s not so....well, mini. The new Mini, unveilved last month is 3,821mm long, 1,727mm wide and 1,414mm tall. The original mini was 3,005mm long, 1400m wide and 1,300mm tall. The ‘new original’ is set to have some sweet new features, including a heads up display. They’re rebranded the original Mini ‘Hatch’ so to avoid confusion amongst their ever expanding product range. Forget whatever images you have of those measly hovercrafts you’ve seen on TV that simply inflate and make it seem like you’re off the ground. Now, after parting with only a small fortune, you can get your hands on the real thing. Using what seems like an incredibly basic system of wings, this vehicular innovation supposedly allows the pilot to hop effortlessly over 20 inches above the ground, god forbid their newest toy be scratched by the very ground the commoners walk upon. Gallery loves to support local artists. We love it even more when the opportunity arises to spend a little time getting to know them. Gallery Magazine recently met with a rather talented local writer, director and poet who raps over hip-hop beats to tell his stories. We sat down with Joel Cheetham, aka Cryptic, to discuss Richard Ashcroft, the University of Guernsey and his new short film, ‘re:defined’

What caused the interest in music and writing? My Dad. He was very much into music and played in bands, so there were always instruments in the house – I was always ‘into’ listening and writing. Personally, I prefer to get the music from other people and concentrate on the words. Do you work with someone to produce the music for your songs or is it purely a solo expedition? It’s basically through networking online. There’s a guy in America that I use. On Soundcloud, there are guys that put their music online and they say that the arrangements are available for purchase. I find something I like and purchase. They send me the track - just like that. I was working with someone locally but we went down different creative routes. I have never met any of the producers of all the tracks I’m currently working on. Eventually, some of them, I’ll befriend on Facebook but it’s usually just through Soundcloud. In the 60’s, if you didn’t have a band you couldn’t make music, but now you can make music with anyone, anywhere. So you’d like to start working with a live band? I’ve always wanted to start a band – I’ve tried a couple of times but it’s proven to be quite hard that’s why I’m doing it this way. But it does sound so much better when anything is done with a live band. I don’t know why all hip-hop hasn’t evolved to that yet. Samples can be easily recreated live – that’s definitely something I want to do. You recently directed a music video featuring local actors and shot with local photographers – can you tell us a bit about it? It was very stressful! It took us four days to film but shooting was spread out over three months because of work commitments and scheduling of crew and cast. It’s really a

short film that I’m narrating over and thankfully the people I worked with were able to convey what I wanted into a film. Plus, we achieved it with zero budget. It would have been nice to film it with helicopters but… Your lyrics are sometimes quite critical of the world around you. What do you think about the possibility of Guernsey having a University? Is it really needed? A university in Guernsey? There are plenty of fantastic University’s in the UK. It could essentially be very similar to the skate park situation. I remember being 14 and they said they wanted to build a park – I’m 28 now and they’ve only just done it. I imagine it’ll be the same – they’ll want to cultivate something and it’ll lose steam. Personally, not sure it’s a good idea. If people really want to learn things/new skills, they’ll end up doing it themselves. I suppose if someone is really into something they’ll teach themselves regardless. As this month’s theme is Decadence – here’s a million pounds. You’re not allowed to be kind. What are you going to spend it on? I was going to say I’d pay off all my family mortgages! Suppose I’d have waste a bunch of it with my mates and make it rain! Experience what it’s like to be Kanye for a day! Speaking of Kanye, what is your opinion of commercial rap? There’s the odd person who slips through now and again. But it’s not really hip-hop. ‘Urban pop’ is probably a better way to describe it. If I listen to commercial hip hop now it’ll be from the 90’s, like Wu-Tang. There are a lot of talented and controversial rappers out there but because they’re never getting on MTV, no one really cares.

If there were one commercial artist you could work with, who would it be? Can it be anyone? I’m into different music so maybe Richard Ashcroft on the rock side. A hip-hop producer produced his last album and I’ve always respected The Verve. Hip-hop world? It would have to be Nas. No question. On the independent side of things, it would have to be Jehst. What inspires you? Everything. I guess nostalgia more than anything. I tend to write everything from a reflective point of view. I can’t write in the middle of something. I like to wait and process my thoughts. I can’t force myself to write so I’m happy for lines to come to me before putting pen to paper. In re:defined, I say “back to my musical roots outside where nature awaits” and it is about growing up in Guernsey and how it influences my writing. I’m not ashamed of rapping about being from this island. What about the verbal sport of ‘battling’ with other rappers? It’s not in my nature to write lyrics to tear people down. I like to try and inspire. I used to think it was about being able to battle, to look at people and try and exploit their weaknesses. If battle rapping was about who could write the best song then I’d win hands down. But if it’s about who can insult the other person the best I’d be in trouble. You can win a battle and people will forget or you can write a great song and it can be timeless.
