갤러리현대가 개관 50주년을 맞는 해에 김창열 화백의 열네 번째 개인전 《The Path》를 열게 되어 무척 영 광입니다. 1976년, 갤러리현대는 프랑스 파리에서 활약 중인 김창열 화백의 개인전을 개최하며 처음 인연 을 맺었습니다. 이 전시를 계기로 파리에서 이미 호평을 받은 그의 ‛물방울’ 작업이 국내에 처음 소개됐고, 미술계 안팎으로 신선한 반향을 일으키며 김창열 화백에 대한 인지도도 크게 올랐습니다. 이후 갤러리현 대는 작가와 개인전을 꾸준히 개최하였고, 1993년 국립현대미술관 개인전과 2004년 파리 주드폼국립미술 관 초대전, 2016년 제주도립김창열미술관 설립 등 그의 대내외적 활동을 격려하고 지원하였습니다.

김창열 개인전 《The Path》는 그의 작품 세계에서 물방울과 함께 거대한 맥을 형성하는 ‘문자’에 초점을 맞 추었습니다. 김 화백은 대표 연작인 <회귀>에서 생명과 순수, 정화를 상징하는 물방울과 이치와 도리, 문 명을 상징하는 문자의 합일을 시도했습니다. <회귀> 연작에 등장하는 문자는 캔버스의 영롱한 물방울과 더불어강한 존재감을 드러냅니다. 그의 회화에서 문자는 내용과 형식적 측면에서 매우 중요하며 해석의 여지가 풍부함에도 이에 대한 관심과 연구는 미진했습니다. 이번 전시가 천자문과 도덕경의 여러 구절을 화폭에 옮기며 작가가 향했던 진리 추구의 ‛길’을 함께 할 수 있는 자리가 되길 바랍니다.

Gallery Hyundai is honored to hold Kim Tschang-Yeul’s 14th solo exhibition The Path in this meaningful 50th year of its inauguration. The relationship between the gallery and the artist began when Gallery Hyundai had the first solo show of Kim Tschang-Yeul, who was actively developing his career in Paris. This show introduced Kim’s ‘water drop’ paintings to the domestic reception for the first time; causing a great sensation in the art worlds of Korea and beyond, it also significantly raised recognition of the artist. Since then, Gallery Hyundai has continued to open his solo exhibitions, and made significant effort to support and bear fruit in and out of the country; some of the important accomplishments include solo shows at major art institutions like Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Gwacheon (1993), Jeu de Paume, Paris (2004), and the opening of Kim Tschang-Yeul Art Museum, Jeju (2016).

The Path concentrates on the subject of ‘text,’ which, along with water drops, creates a grand vein of Kim Tschang-Yeul’s artistic oeuvre. In Recurrence , the artist attempted to merge water drops that symbolize life, purity, and purification and text that symbolizes reason, duty, and civilization.

The text that appears on the Recurrence series reveals as strong presence as the water drops glisteningly painted on the canvas. Despite the vital significance of its content and formality, and the considerable room for further interpretation, text has not received the well-deserved research.

Galley Hyundai invites the viewers to experience the ‘path’ of ideal and truth that the artist has pursued by painting multiple phrases of Thousand-Character Classic and Tao Te Ching .

ENCOUNTER 문자와 물방울과의 만남

김창열에게 물방울과 빛, 빛의 반사 효과는 작품을 이루는 중요한 조형 요소다. 김창열의 초기 작업에서는 바 탕칠을 하지 않은 캔버스나 모래가 물방울의 배경이 되었지만 화면이 커짐에 따라 상실되는 캔버스의 물질성을 극복하기 위해 그는 물방울을 완벽하게 담아낼 수 있는 지지체를 찾는 실험에 몰두했다. 김창열은 제작 방식과 기법, 순서를 끊임없이 변주하여 물방울이 스며든 듯한 효과나 비정형적인 형태가 물방울을 둘러싸는 모습을 담아내는 다양한 시도를 이어갔다. 이러한 과정에서 물방울이 신문지 위로 그 자리를 옮겨온 것은 지극히 자연 스러운 흐름이었다. 프랑스 신문인 ‘휘가로(Le Figaro)’지 위에 물방울을 그린 작품 <휘가로지>(1975)는 문자와 물방울이 결합한 최초의 순간이다. 이후, 문자가 캔버스에 등장하기 시작했다. 온전한 글자가 해체되고 의미없 는 기본 ‘획’이 작품에 담겼다.

Water droplets, light, and its reflection are significant formal elements of Kim Tschang-Yeul’s paintings. In Kim’s early work, a raw canvas or sand serves as the supporting background of water droplets. However, to overcome the loss of its materiality caused by the enlargement of the plane, he immersed himself in exploring the background that can perfectly embrace the water droplets. Unceasingly transforming the process, technique, and sequence of art making, Kim continued various attempts to paint water droplets permeated into the canvas or the amorphous shapes surrounding them. On that account, it was only natural that the droplets settled down on newspapers. Le Figaro (1975), on which water drops are drawn on the French newspaper Le Figaro , is the first moment of union between texts and water droplets. Later, text began to reappear on the canvas works. Here, the letter was destructed and the meaningless basic “stroke” was depicted.

REALIZATION and RECURRENCE 수양과 회귀

<회귀> 연작이 시작되며 물방울 작품에 천자문이 도입되었다. 김창열은 어린 시절 조부에게 천자문을 배웠던 기억을 되살려 천자문을 작품에 담게 되었다고 말했다. 그러나 한자의 등장은 단순한 유년기로의 회귀보다 더 욱더 많은 것을 의미한다. 천자문은 우주 자연과 인간 삶의 이치를 담아내고, 주역을 비롯한 동양사상의 정수 를 담은 4자 2구로 된 125편의 고시이다. “하늘과 땅은 검고 누르며, 우주는 넓고 거치니”라는 뜻으로 풀이되 는 천자문의 첫 두 구절 “천지현황, 우주홍황(天地玄黃, 宇宙洪荒)”은 우리가 사는 이 세계가 시간과 공간으로 이루어졌다는 이 세상의 구성 원리를 드러내는 동시에 무한한 우주의 모습을 동양적인 관점에서 전달한다. 물 방울과 문자는 캔버스 위에서 결합하여 김창열의 고유한 예술 세계를 구축하고 있다.

As the Recurrence series began, the Thousand-Character Classic was introduced to Kim’s work. Kim Tschang-Yeul stated that he thumbs back his memories of learning the Thousand-Character Classic from his grandfather in his childhood, and brought it as a part of his practice. Nevertheless, the emergence of Chinese characters means much more than just a return to the past. The Thousand-Character Classic is an ancient collection of 125 poems, each of two stanzas and four letters, containing the ways of the natural universe and human life, centering on the key concepts of Eastern philosophy. Interpreted as "the sky and earth are black and yellow; the universe is wide and rough," the first two phrases unveil the structural principles that the world we inhabit is consisted of time and space and convey the infinite universe from an Eastern viewpoint. That is, the combination of water drops and texts on the canvas establishes Kim Tschang-Yeul’s unique art world.

REFLECTION and EXPANSION 성찰과 확장

문자가 도입되면서 한지와 먹과 같은 전통적인 재료의 사용이 시작되었다. 김창열은 동양의 ‘도 사상’을 재료의 사용을 통해 추구하려 했다. 그는 커다란 한지에 먹과 물감을 이용해 옅은 회색과 먹 선을 겹겹이 교차 시켜 같은 색의 층이 그물처럼 화면을 덮은 작업으로 작품 세계를 전개해 나갔다. 이러한 시도로 김창열은 물방울 과 한문의 결합 속에서 동양적 조형 공간의 합일을 이루어냈다. 그는 물방울과 천자문의 관계를 통해 작품을 마주한 감상자를 문자 너머의 진리로 초대한다. 김창열은 유년기에 붓글씨 연습을 하듯 화면 전체에 도덕경이 나 천자문을 겹쳐 써 배경을 완전히 메우고 그 위에 물방울을 위치시켰다. 겹쳐 쓴 붓글씨는 자신을 비워내는 수련의 과정이자 반복적인 행위를 통해 자신을 무념무상의 상태로 무화시키고자 하는 과정이다.

With the arrival of texts, the use of traditional materials such as hanji (Korean paper) and ink has emerged.

Kim Tschang-Yeul pursued the “Tao” of the East, adopting traditional materials. Using ink and paint on large hanji paper, he crossed light gray and ink lines one upon another, in developing his art worlds where layers of the same color covered the canvas like a net. Through such attempts, Kim achieved the unity of the Eastern formative space in the combination of water droplets and Chinese characters. He invites the viewer to the truth beyond the text through the relationship of water droplets and the Thousand-Character Classic .

As if practicing calligraphy as a beginner, Kim completely filled the background by writing the Thousand-

Character Classic or Tao Te Ching in countless layers, and placed water droplets on it. The repeated strokes of calligraphy are a process of training to vacate himself and of emptying and neutralizing into a state of unconsciousness through repetitive deeds.

상처와 진혼의 의식에서 평화와 놀이의 사이 세계로 여정

Ⅰ. 덩어리의 유수에서 방울의 물로

유형(틀)의 관점에서 보면 세계는 수없이 많은 있음으로 가득 차 있다. 사물, 에고, 진리 등등. 이 는 일정한 꼴을 지닌 구체성의 물상으로 나타나기도 하고 특정한 가치를 내세우며 타자를 배제하는 추상성의 초월로 나타나기도 한다. 유형의 물상은 자본주의 사회에서 있는 그대로 음미 되지 않고 소유를 향한 욕망과 지 속을 향한 권력을 낳는다. 욕망과 권력은 그 자체로 끈질긴 생명력을 갖고 있지만, 그 소유는 지속의 원망에도 불구하고 오래 또는 영원히 가지 못한다. 노자의 “회오리는 아침내 불지 않고 소나기도 종일 내리지 않는다” 1는 말처럼 소유의 짧음을 극단화시키면 하루의 시간 길이를 채우지도 못한다.

우리는 세계를, 있다고 생각하지만 실제로 있지 않은 것을 있다고 착각할 뿐이고, 개별로 나누어 그 값을 매길 수 있다고 생각하지만 나눌 수 있다는 시도부터 폭력적일 수밖에 없다. 세계는 원래 없었고 나눌 수도 없기 때문이다. 그래서 불교에서는 어떠한 것도 자기 동일성이 없다는 공(空)을 말하고 도가에서는 세계에 경계를 그어 그 가치를 차별할 수 없다는 무(無)를 말한다. 세계의 진상은 조건에 따라 생겨났다가 다시 조건에 따라 사라지는 것이다. 끊임없는 변화만이 진실하다. 이에 있음보다 없음, 유형보다 무형이 더 진실하므로 노자 의 말을 빌린다면 “없음에서 있음이 생겨난다” 2고 할 수 있다.

동아시아 철학과 예술에서는 변화하는 세계의 무상성을 나타내기 위해 일찍이 바람, 구름, 물(이 슬) 등에 주목했다. 바람, 구름, 물은 자연 현상과 자연물로 분명 있지만, 일정한 꼴을 지니지 않아 무엇으로 규 정할 수가 없다. 모든 감각을 동원하고 지성을 최대로 발휘하더라도 규정할 수 없기 때문이다. 특히 흐르는 물, 즉 유수(流水)는 끊임없이 변화하는 세계를 드러내는 상징으로 애용되었다. 공자는 냇가에 흘러가는 물을 보고

한마디 했다. “흘러가는(변화하는) 것이 이와 같구나! 밤이나 낮이나 그치지 않구나.” 3 이러한 변화무쌍은 고사 가 바위를 안고 물을 바라보는 강희안(1417-1464)의 <고사관수도(高士觀水圖)>와 아마 화가가 뒷짐을 진 채 폭 포를 바라보는 석도(1642-1707)의 <여산관폭도(廬山觀瀑圖)> 등에서 여실하게 드러나고 있다.

김창열의 그림에는 흐르는 물이 나타나지 않지만, 물방울에서 유수의 무상성을 읽어낼 수 있다.

“물방울을 그리는 행위는 모든 것을 물방울로 용해시키고, 투명하게 ‘무(無)’로 되돌려 보내기 위 한 행위이다. 분노도 불안도 공포도 모든 것을 ‘허(虛)’로 돌릴 때 우리들은 평안과 평화를 체험 하게 될 것이다. 혹자는 ‘에고(ego)’의 신장을 바라고 있으나, 나는 에고의 소멸을 바라고 있으며, 나는 ‘에고’의 소멸을 지향하여 그 표현 방법을 찾고 있는 것이다.” 4

평안과 평화는 조금 뒤에 이야기하자. 물방울은 에고, 즉 사람을 하나의 방향(욕망, 가치 등)으 로 강렬하고 집요하게 이끌어가는 힘의 존재를 소멸시키고자 하는 형상화와 관련이 있다. 유수는 한곳에 머물 고자 하는 어떠한 시도를 무화시켜서 결국 흘러가게 하고, 물방울은 경계를 지키고자 하는 어떠한 시도를 무화 시켜서 결국 녹아들게 한다. 유수는 물의 덩어리가 흘러가는 운동성과 부딪치며 나는 음악성을 보여준다. 물방 울은 방울의 물로 떨어지는 운동성과 크고 작은 방울들로 어울리는 음악성을 지니고 있다. 양자는 덩어리와 방 울의 차이에도 불구하고 공통성을 갖는다.

이렇게 보면 김창열은 동아시아 철학과 예술에서 무상성을 상징하는 유수를 물방울로 현대적으 로 재해석하고 있다. 그의 물방울은 공자, 노자, 강희안, 석도 등과 문제의식을 공유하는 동아시아 예술 사상의 전통에 서 있다고 할 수 있다.

Ⅱ. 이항상생의 우주

김창열은 왜 전통적인 유수를 그대로 재현하지 않고 ‘물방울’로 형상화시켰을까? 화가가 스스로 물방울이 빛과 관련 있다는 점을 말했고 또 평단도 이에 주목해왔다.

“밤새도록 그린 그림이 마음에 안 들어 유화 색채를 떼어내 재활용하기 위해 캔버스 뒤에 물을 뿌려 놓았는데 물이 방울져 아침 햇살에 빛나고 있었습니다. 그 순간 존재의 충일감에 온몸을

떨며 물방울을 만났습니다.” 5

이 발견이 제일 먼저 <밤에 일어난 일>(1972)로 작품화되었다. 윤진섭은 물방울의 원형이 화가 의 특별한 경험 이전인 <제례>(1964)의 “오른쪽 상단에 점액질처럼 흘러내린 물방울”의 하나에 있다고 본다.6 나 는 이보다 더 거슬러 올라가서 <상흔>(1964)의 캔버스에 난 구멍, <제전>(1970)의 가로로 그은 선의 틈으로 배 어 나오는 물도 물방울의 발견을 예비하고 있다고 생각한다. 뚫린 구멍은 흘러나올 점액질을 전제하고, 배어 나 온 물은 구멍과 선의 흔적을 방울로 단순화될 수 있기 때문이다. (물방울의 예비와 발견이 갖는 차이는 뒤에 다 룬다.)

<회귀> 연작을 일별하면 분명히 물방울과 빛의 연관성은 강하게 나타난다. 그렇다고 물방울이 오로지 빛과 관계를 맺지 않는다. 화면에 그림자도 있고 바람도 있고 소리도 있고 머무는 것도 있고 지나가는 것 도 있고 결합과 분리의 운동도 있다. 구체적으로 말하면 물방울을 비추는 빛이 있고 그 빛으로 인해 그림자가 생겨나고, 물방울의 모양을 바꾸는 바람이 불고, 여러 물방울이 떨어져서 낼 소리가 있고, 물방울이 큰 것도 있 고 작은 것도 있고, 물방울이 온전한 원형으로 있기도 하고 네모 형태로 드러나기도 하고, 물방울이 뭉쳐져서 커진 것도 있고 홀로 있는 것도 있고, 물방울이 수직 방향도 있고 45도로 기운 것도 있고, 정지된 느낌도 있고 움직이는 느낌도 있다. 개념 쌍의 이항관계, 예컨대 음(陰)과 양(陽), 풍(風)과 음(音), 대(大)와 소(小), 원(園)과 방(方), 정(靜)과 동(動), 합(合)과 분(分), 직(直)과 사(斜) 등이 제한된 화폭이 광대한 우주인 양 모든 현상이 자 유롭게 표현되고 있다.

이러한 다양한 이항관계는 어떻게 발생할까? 그것은 그림에 드러나지 않지만 작용하는 것이 있 다. 구체적으로 바람이고 추상적으로 지나가는 것(무상성)이라고 할 수 있다. 고요한 상태에서 물방울은 아무런 간섭을 받지 않고 위에서 아래로 낙하 운동한다. 반면에 물방울들의 세계에 “무엇이 끼어드는” 또는 “조건이 바 뀌는” 순간 물방울은 더 이상 위에서 아래로 그대로 떨어지지 않고 영향을 받아 동선이 직선에서 사선으로 바 뀌기도 하고 물방울이 서로 합쳐지기도 한다. 끼어드는 것이든 바뀌는 것이든 변화를 일으키게 하고서 “그것”은 자신의 자리를 차지하지 않고 그냥 휙 지나가 버린다. 이 때문에 그것은 그릴 수 없고, 존재한다고 할 수 없어 정체를 규명할 수 없다.

그 “무엇”을 그리지 않지만, 김창열은 세계가 어떻게 작용하고 운동하는지를 여실히 보여주고 있 다. 이 세계는 수많은 개념 쌍의 이항이 서로 맞물리면서 진행된다. 빛과 그림자가 함께 있어 서로를 더 돋보이 게 한다. 큰 것도 있고 작은 것도 있지만 서로 간섭하지 않고 나란히 어울린다. 이처럼 이항은 서로가 서로의 존

재를 필요로 하고 함께 있기에 각자의 특성을 더 잘 살려낸다.7 노자의 말을 빌린다면 “있음과 없음이 서로 살린 다”고 할 수 있다.8 이 때문에 존재가 이항의 어떠한 위상 또는 자리에 있다고 하더라도 그곳에서 자신의 의의를 가지며 그 가치를 드러내게 된다. 이것이 앞에서 인용한 글에서 김창열이 느꼈던 평화와 평온의 실상이기도 하 고 노자가 말하는 “만물이 나란히 자라나는” 우주의 실상이기도 하다.9

이는 이항 중 한쪽이 다른 한쪽보다 가치에서 우위를 차지하고자 전쟁하고 군림하는 세계와 완 연히 다르다. 대가 기준이 되어 소로 하여금 자신을 닮기를 요구하거나 소가 대에 미치지 못하는 만큼 가치가 떨어지는 세계와 다른 것이다. 김창열은 물방울의 다양한 이항이 대립이 아니라 상생의 관계이자 미학이라는 점 을 그대로 나타내고 있다. 이항상생의 우주는 대립으로 생기는 상처를 달래고 그 흔적을 아물게 하는 평온의 아늑함을 주위로 퍼뜨린다.

Ⅲ. 천자문(문자)은 도구이지 진리 그 자체가 아니다

천자문은 왕희지의 필적 속에서 해당되는 글자를 모아 만들어서 당 제국에 들어 동아시아 제국 에 전파되어 한자를 배우는 교재로 유명해졌다. 이러한 명성에도 불구하고 “천자문이 과연 초급 한자 교재로 적 절한 것인가?”라는 비판은 조선시대부터 끊임없이 제기되었다. 정약용도 천자문이 중국의 고사를 반영하고 의 미의 연관성이 떨어진다며 천자문에 의한 한자 교육의 비효율성에 대해 강하게 비판하고 『아학편(兒學編)』이라 는 별도의 아동용 교재를 집필하기도 했다.

이러한 논란에도 불구하고 “하늘 천 따 지”로 시작되는 천자문은 한자 학자와 관련해서 대중적 으로 독보적인 인기를 누렸다. 김창열은 1986년부터 천자문(한자)을 배경으로 물방울 그림을 그리기 시작했다. 작화의 배경은 그가 조부로부터 고향 평안남도 맹산에서 배웠던 한자 교육의 원형 기억에 바탕을 두고 있다.10 여기서 “천자문”의 의미에 주목할 필요가 있다. 김창열의 그림에서 천자문은 한자 학습이 아니라 문자의 상징이 고 문자의 집적으로 이루어진 텍스트로서 경전(진리)의 상징이다. 물방울의 지지체를 찾는 실험 과정에서 먼저 프랑스 신문 <휘가로지>(1975)로 시도했다가 천자문으로 바뀌게 된다. 천자문은 물방울의 반투명성과 중량감을 드러내기에 신문을 비롯하여 다른 지지체(마대 등)보다 더 좋은 바탕이 되었기 때문이다.11 나아가 문자(천자문)

는 개인적으로 유년 시절에 배운 한자로 표기된 가치 또는 그 체계를 상징하고 보편적으로 특정한 가치와 진리 를 실어 나르는 기호이다.

사실 한자와 그림의 만남은 조선시대 민화에서 시도되었다. 주로 ‘수(壽)’자나 ‘효제충신예의염치 (孝悌忠信禮義廉恥)’ 여덟 글자를 크게 써놓고 글자의 획 속에 관련된 이야기를 그려 넣었다. 오래 살고자 하는 욕망을 나타내거나 유교의 기본 덕목을 강조하는 맥락을 나타냈다. 하나의 한자가 바로 하나의 텍스트라고 할 수 있다. 이는 문자를 써서 집의 어디에 붙여놓으면 사람이 문자의 힘을 가진다는 주술성의 의식을 반영하고 있 다. 즉 ‘수’ 자를 써두면 오래 살고 ‘효’ 자를 써두면 효자가 나온다는 맥락이다. 이는 결국 사람이 자신이 이루고 자 하는 욕망을 문자를 통해 투사한다고 할 수 있다. 소재의 측면에서 한자와 물방울은 민화와 유사성을 보여 준다고 할 수 있다.

하지만 물방울과 천자문(문자)은 민화의 문자도와 다른 배치를 보여주고 있다. <물방울>, <회귀> 연작 등을 보면 물방울로 인해 천자문(텍스트)이 더 도드라진 경우도 있고 흐릿해지는 경우도 있고 일부는 드러 나고 일부는 숨겨진 경우도 있다. 천자문(텍스트)이 지지체에 질서정연하게 자리하기도 하고 중앙에 집중되기도 하고, 한쪽 면에 자리하기도 하고 비뚤게 놓이기도 하는 등 배치가 끊임없이 표류(漂流)한다. 또 물방울은 베르 메르의 <진주 귀걸이를 한 소녀>의 ‘진주 귀걸이’처럼 사람으로 하여금 없는 것을 있게 지각하는 착시와 환상의 효과를 보여주기도 한다. 이처럼 물방울과 천자문(문자, 텍스트, 경전, 진리)은 일률적으로 어떠하다고 말할 수 없고 그림마다 다양한 방식으로 변주되고 있다. 이는 두 가지 방향에서 접근이 가능하다.

먼저 천자문의 진리는 다른 어떤 것의 접근을 허용하지 않는다. 그 자체로 신성하기 때문이다. 물방울이 천자문에 다가오면 진리를 훼손시킬 수 있다. 물방울로 인해 지워질 수 있는 천자문을 지키려면 근접 을 막아야 한다. 이는 자연스럽게 상상할 수 있는 일련의 사건이다. 이 사건이 일어날 경우 진리의 천자문이 훼 손되는 만큼 물방울은 물방울로 있지 못하고 문자에 스며들어 형체를 잃게 된다.

하지만 그림에서 물방울은 물방울로 그대로 있는데 천자문은 온전하게 다 드러나지 않았다. 또 는 천자문은 일련의 작품에서 온전성을 회복하지도, 정위를 찾지도 못하고 끝없이 표류한다. 천자문은 굳건한 대지(터전)를 잃고 섬인 양 우주를 유영한다. 물방울이 천자문에 닿는 사건은 일어나지 않았는데, 문자가 지워 질 수 있는 우려가 현실화되고 있다. 이를 어떻게 이해 해야 할까? 현실에서 일어날 수 없는 형용 모순의 일이기 때문이다. 그렇다면 물방울은 천자문의 진리를 지운 것이 아니라 오히려 숨겨져 있던 천자문이 드러나도록 한 것이다. 물방울이 지지체로 다가오면서 가려져 있던 천자문이 조금씩 드러난 것이다. 이는 성인의 김창열이 물 방울을 통해 유년의 김창열의 기억 속으로 헤집고 들어가는 것이다. 유년의 기억은 시간의 경과와 더불어 아련 하여 정체가 선명하지 않지만, 빛의 물방울이 시간을 거슬러 가는 회귀를 통해 조각으로 도드라지고 또 조각이 부분으로 확대되고 다시 부분의 연결로 점증되면서 그만큼 복원되는 것이다. 복원되는 만큼 회귀의 완성도가

높아진다. 이 분석은 화가가 무의식을 반의식으로, 다시 의식으로 끌어올리는 측면을 설명할 수 있다.

하지만 물방울과 천자문은 성인의 김창열이 유년의 자신을 만나러 가는 회귀만으로 설명할 수 없다. 회귀는 개인사적 사건의 무의식만이 아니라 더 깊고 복잡한 의식의 층위를 나타내고 있기 때문이다. 그렇 다면 물방울과 표류하는 천자문의 관계를 어떻게 바라봐야 할까? 사람은 적어도 상식적으로나 과학적으로나 물방울이 천자문에 닿는 순간에 물방울이 천자문으로 스며들면서 물방울도 사라지고 천자문도 지워진다고 예 상한다. 이미 말했듯이 그림에서 물방울은 물방울로 그대로 있는데 천자문은 온전하게 드러나지 않는다. 이제 관점을 바꿔서 온전히 드러나지 않는 천자문을 반쯤 드러난 것이 아니라 그만큼 지워졌다고 생각해보자.

천자문이 지워진 만큼 강고한 성채로서 진리는 온전성과 그 권위를 잃고 서서히 허물어지고 있 다. 사실 이 말은 어폐가 있다. 천자문이 진리 그 자체라면 몰라도 양자는 원래 다르기 때문이다. 천자문은 진 리를 드러내는 도구로서 문자일 뿐이다. 따라서 지워진 것은 진리가 아니라 문자만 허물어졌을 뿐이다. 이는 김 창열이 동아시아 예술 사상의 중요한 문자와 진리의 관계를 현대적으로 재현하고 있다고 할 수 있다.

일찍이 노자와 장자는 언어가 진리를 온전히 드러낼 수 없다면서 그 대안으로 새끼줄 문자나 우 의(寓意)로 표현하는 우언(寓言)을 제안한 적이 있다.12 또 선불교의 『육조단경』과 『능엄경』 등에서 손가락과 달의 이야기로 도구로서 문자를 진리 그 자체로 오독하는 습관을 경계하고 있다.13 손으로 달을 가리키면 사람은 손 가락을 따라 시선을 달로 옮겨야 할 텐데 손가락을 달로 생각하는 것이다. 손가락은 달을 가리킬 뿐 달이 아니 라는 것을 모르는 것이다. 이에 선불교에서는 아예 문자에 의존하지 않고 텍스트를 초월하는 “불립문자(不立文 字), 교외별전(敎外別傳)”을 말하고 장자는 문자를 통발에 비유하여 어류를 잡으면 통발을 잊어야 한다는 “득어 망전(得魚忘筌)”을 주장한다.14

천자문(문자)은 손가락과 통발처럼 진리(달)를 가리키는 도구일 뿐이다. 천자문이 지워진 걸 진 리가 지워졌다고 주장하면 이는 문자를 진리 자체로 오인하는 병, 즉 문자병에 걸리게 된다. 이는 문자 숭배이자 우상 숭배라고 할 수 있다. 오인을 깨려면 어떻게 해야 할까? 천자문(문자)의 온전한 형체를 허물고 위상을 떠다 니게 하는 수밖에 없다. 천자문의 형체가 허물어지면 사람은 처음에 허물진 만큼 다시 복원하려고 기억을 더듬

을 것이다. 부분적으로 복원이 된다고 하더라도 결코 전체가 온전한 꼴로 돌아올 수 없다. 시도하다가 결국 복 원이 무망하다는 사실을 인정하지 않을 수가 없다.

아울러 천자문이 특정한 진리를 드러내는 도구로써 보편 진리를 감추고 있었던 걸 자각하게 된 다. 즉 우리가 더 이상 천자문만을 들여다본다고 해서 진리를 만날 수 없다는 사실을 직시하게 한다. 우리는 자 신이 마주할 상황에 처음 당황하겠지만 이내 평정을 찾게 된다. 우리는 이제 천자문이 더 이상 진리 그 자체가 아니라는 사실을 인정하고 천자문 너머의 진리 그 자체로 시선을 돌리게 된다. 이것이 바로 개인사적 사건의 맥 락을 넘어서 보편 진리로의 회귀라고 할 수 있다. 이는 에도시대 후가이 에쿤(風外惠薰, 1568-1654?)이 키가 작은 포대 화상이 손가락을 쭉 뻗어 화면에 나타나지 않은 달을 가리키는 <지월도(指月圖)> 또는 <지월포대도 (指月包袋圖)>와 비슷한 맥락에 있다고 할 수 있다. 김창열은 물방울과 천자문의 관계를 통해 문자병에 빠져 진 리를 만나지 못하는 현대를 비판하면서 동시에 현대인을 문자 너머의 진리로 초대하고 있다.

Ⅳ. 물방울과 지지체 사이, 즉 또 하나의 무한 우주에서 노닐기

이제 앞에서 남겨두었던 <제사>, <상흔>에서 예비된 물방울과 <회귀> 연작에 나오는 발견 한 물방울의 동이(同異)를 살펴보자. 이 둘은 김창열의 그림에서 제 꼬리를 삼키는 뱀 형상의 오우로보로스 (ouroboros)처럼 쉼 없는 재생(창작)의 원천이 되고 있다.15 현실에서 물방울이 뭔가에 닿으면 물방울은 더 이상 꼴을 유지하지 못한다. 김창열의 그림에서 물방울은 다양한 모습으로 변주되지만 계속 물방울로 남아있고 그 ‘뭔가’는 밝아졌다가 어두워지고 온전하다가 일그러지기도 한다. 즉 현실에서 일어날 수 없는 형용모순이 작화되 고 있다. 이는 원인과 결과의 언어로 접근할 수 없다. 원인이 없는데 결과가 일어난 셈이기 때문이다.

이 일이 어떻게 가능할까? 물방울과 천자문은 동일한 2차원의 평면에 자리하지만, 그 사이를 무 한히 벌려 공간을 창출하면 3차원의 입체에 놓이게 된다. 수평의 2차원 평면을 수평에다 수직을 결합한 3차원 의 입체로 치환하는 것이다. 이는 실제로 김창열이 설치 작업인 <의식>(1993), <회귀>(1993)에서 시도한 적이 있 다. 물방울(유리)이 나무, 모래, 무쇠에 놓이기도 했다. 물방울은 어떤 일을 일으키는 원인이다. 캔버스는 그 원 인으로 인해 일어날 수 있는 행불행의 현장이자 결과이다.

사람은 개인의 영역에서 끝없이 자유로운 선택을 하며 살아간다. 반면 개인을 넘어선 영역에서 사람은 선택하지 못하고 세계에 실존적으로 그냥 내던져진다. 행복과 불행은 무차별적으로 사람에게 다가온다. 예술은 어떻게 개인이 감당할 수 없는 과거와 현재의 상처를 치유할 수 있을까? 먼저 원인과 결과의 사이를 무

한히 벌려보자. 이렇게 되면 원인은 사람에게 다가오지만 무한히 늘어난 시간 속에서 현실에서 더 이상 원인으 로 작용하지 못한다. 물방울과 지지체의 사이가 무한한 만큼 그 낙하는 정지에 가깝다. 반면 결과는 원인으로 일어날 수 있는 현실을 미리 생생하게 보여주고 있다. 여기서 역전이 일어난다. 원인이 결과에 작용하는 것이 아 니라 거꾸로 결과가 원인에 작용하여 그 작용력을 거두게 한다. 일어나지 않아야 할 일은 일어나지 않아야 한다. 철학은 논리와 성찰을 바탕으로 사람에게 더 나은 삶을 그리게 하는 반면 예술은 모순과 창조를 바탕으로 사람 에게 더 나은 삶을 가능하게 한다. 이렇게 보면 <제사>, <상흔>의 예비된 물방울은 몸에 난 스크래치를 나타낸 다면 <회귀>의 물방울은 보다 단순화되어 타자를 허용하는 의식(심신)의 평온을 나타낸다. 양자는 시대를 관통 해 나간 실존을 형상화하면서 각각 고통의 신음과 평온의 화음, 상처의 광기와 치유의 평화를 나타낸다.

나는 김창열의 물방울을 보고 처음에 빛과 따뜻함을 느꼈지만, 어느 순간에 어두움과 아픔을 느꼈다. 글을 쓰면서 김창열이 전쟁과 표류의 시간을 지나오면서 물방울은 폭탄 그 자체이면서 폭탄의 섬광일 수도 있고 폭발음일 수도 있다는 상상에 사로잡혔다. 과도한 상상이라 생각하며 그 생각을 저만치 밀쳐 두었다 가 그의 말을 듣고 다시 불러냈다. “나는 전쟁의 기억을 떠올리곤 했다. 물방울들이 망자들을 위한 진혼곡을 대 신하도록 했다. 그림을 그리는 것은 내게 죽은 사람들의 영혼을 위로하는 행위였고”, “제가 지금 물방울로 표현 하고 있는 것은 전에 제가 상흔을 주제로 그림을 그릴 때 점들로 표현하고자 했던 것의 확장”16이다. <제사>, <상 흔>과 <회귀>는 작화의 시기가 달라 완전히 다른 그림이 아니라 단순화를 통해 같은 것을 승화시키는 일련의 과 정에 위치한다. 쉴 새 없이 떨어지던 폭탄이 떨어져 상처를 준다면 소리를 가진 위로하는 각각의 음표로 치환되 면서 음악이 된다. 그 음악은 그의 말대로 진혼곡이다.

김창열이 창조해낸 공간은 일어나지 않아야 할 일이 일어나지 않거나 그 원망을 담은 하나의 세 계이다. 그것이 바로 나를 에워싸고 있는 에고의 성채를 허물고서 불안을 넘어 평온으로 나아가고 다시 타자와 공존할 수 있는 평화의 세계이다. 이는 장자가 진영의 논리를 허물고서 먼저 쓸모없음을 노닐다가 다시 쓸모 있 음과 쓸모없음의 사이를 찾아내고 결국 도를 타고서 부유하며 영예와 비방을 넘어 때와 더불어 자유롭게 노닐 며 하나로 고착되지 않는 여정을 닮았다. 이는 물방울과 지지체의 사이, 현실과 환상의 사이처럼 “사이[之間]”를 창출해낸 덕분에 끝없는 변화로 이어진다고 할 수 있다.17 천자문(문자)이 표류하고 부유하는 만큼 물방울은 다 양한 화음을 낼 수 있다. 이것은 김창열의 그림이 음악성을 띠는 이유라고 할 수 있다.

I. From Masses of Running Water to Droplets From the perspective of form (structure), the world is filled with countless “being”s objects, egos, truths, etc. They sometimes emerge in concrete shapes with particular appearances, other times as an abstract transcendence that excludes others in elevating their own values. In capitalist society, physical objects with a form are not appreciated as they are, but instead giving birth to the desire for their ownership and the power of continuation. Desire and power in themselves possess an unyielding force of life, and yet the span of this possession does not last long or for eternity, despite our persistent yearning. Like Laozi’s saying that “High winds do not last all morning. Heavy rain does not last all day,” 1 if one accentuates the brevity of possession, it would fail to even last the length of a single day.

We hold the world as is when we are only mistaking what does not exist for what does; we dissect it into pieces of individual evaluation when the very attempt to categorize is bound to be violent. The world has never existed, nor could it be categorized. This is why Buddhism speaks of voidness (空, Śūnyatā) where nothing has self-identity, and Taoism speaks of nothingness (無) that makes it impossible to delineate the world to assign different values to its parts. The reality of the world appears conditionally and disappears conditionally. Only the unceasing change is truthful. As absence is more truthful than presence and formlessness than form, we can say that “from nothingness emerges being,” 2 borrowing Laozi’s words.

East Asian philosophy and art had for long highlighted wind, clouds, and water (droplets) to visualize the transience of the ever-changing world. Wind, clouds, and water certainly exist as natural phenomena and material, but in their lack of consistent form, they resist definition - even when we mobilize all our senses and the best of our intellect. In particular, running water (流水) has been favorited as a symbol that unveils a ceaselessly changing world. Confucius once commented on a flowing stream: “It passes on just like this, not ceasing day or night!” 3 This everchanging state is abundantly clear in the old man looking at the waters with arms around a rock in Gang Hui-an (1417-1464)’s A seonbi (scholar) overlooking water from the high hill (高士觀水圖,

Gosagwansudo) and the artist admiring a waterfall with hands behind his back in Shitao (16421707)’s Waterfall on Mount Lu (廬山觀瀑圖).

Kim Tschang-Yeul’s paintings may not feature running water, but their water droplets certainly enable a reading of the same idea of transience.

“The act of painting water drops is to liquify all things into water drops, and to return it to a transparent ‛nothingness (無).’ When anger, anxiety, terror, and all else revert to nothingness (虛), we can finally experience peace and calm. Some wish for the advancement of their egos, and yet I await its extinguishment and by doing so search for a method for its expression.” 4 We will discuss peace and calm in a bit. But first, water drops relate to the embodiment of extinguishing a force that intensely and relentlessly drives human to a single direction (of desire or value). Running water voids any attempt to stagnate at one place into flowing onwards, while water droplets void any attempt to guard boundaries into fusing instead. Running water demonstrates the dynamic of masses of water flowing, and the musicality ensuing from their clashing. Water droplets possess the mobility in each fall of a drop and the musicality of droplets, small and big harmonizing with one another. Both share common qualities despite the difference between masses and droplets.

In this respect, Kim Tschang-Yeul reinterprets running water that symbolizes transience in East Asian philosophy and art as water drops, through a modern lens. His water droplets stand among the tradition of East Asian aesthetics that shares its critical themes with Confucius, Laozi, Gang Hui-an or Shitao.

II. The Universe of Binary Coexistence Then why did Kim Tschang-Yeul not visualize running water as is in its traditional form and opt for water droplets instead? The artist himself has mentioned light’s relation to water drops, to which critics had also highlighted.

“I did not like the painting that I had been working on overnight, and sprayed water behind the canvas to remove the oil paints so I could reuse the canvas. Then I saw at moment that I found myself trembling all over at the deep sense of accomplishment with regard to existence.” 5 This discovery first took the form of painting as Event of Night (1972). Although, critic Yoon Jin Sup sees the original form of water drops in the “water drops on the top right corner, dripping with viscosity” in Rite (1964) before the artist’s anecdote,6 I believe the discovery of droplets was foreshadowed even further before, in the holes on Rite (1964)’s canvas or the water seeping out of horizontal slashes in Procession (1970). A punctured hole premises some mucous material to trickle through, and the oozed water lets holes and traces of lines to be simplified as droplets. (The difference between the prefiguration and actual discovery of water droplets is further discussed later.)

The connection between water droplets and light is clearly observed in a glimpse of the Recurrence series. Of course, water drops do not exclusively relate to light - shadows, winds, 5. sounds, passing things, and movements of merging and separating are all presented on canvas.

More specifically, there is a light that shines upon water droplets, which issues shadows; winds blow that alter the shape of droplets; different sounds emanate from the falling of many drops; there are droplets big and small, perfect circles or squares, as a large combination of several droplets or alone, perpendicular and at a 45 degree diagonal, some paused and others on the move.

Such are the countless phenomena in the vast universe freely expressed in the limits of canvas as binaries of conceptual pairs: Yin (陰) and Yang (陽), Wind (風) and Sound (音), Big (大) and Small (小), Expanses (園) and Direction (方), Static (靜) and Moving (動), Combination (合) and Division (分), Straight (直) and Skewed (斜).

How do these various binary relations come to being? It is mainly through a force that does not appear on the surface of the painting: specifically, wind, and abstractly put, passing (transience). In quietude, water drops fall straight downwards without interference. It is at the moment of “something interfering” or “conditions changing” that droplets cease to simply fall from above to below, but their trajectories may change from a straight line to a diagonal, sometimes combining with one another. Things that interfere or invoke change in themselves, it does occupy its own space, and passes promptly afterwards. This is why they cannot be painted - they do not exist, nor can they be defined.

Where Kim Tschang-Yeul does not paint this “something,” he still clearly illustrates the functioning and motions of this world. Namely, the world unfolds with the interlocking of countless binary conceptual pairs. Light and shadow underline each other in coexistence. There are big things and small, and yet they harmonize next to each other without interference. As such, binaries enhance each other’s qualities because they require each other and their coexistence.7 In Laozi’s words, “Therefore having and not having arise together.” 8 So even if a being takes a certain position or place within binaries, it gains meaning and bears a value in that particular location.

This is the reality of peace and calm that Kim experienced as we have seen in the earlier excerpt, and that of Laozi’s universe where “all creation grows in tandem.” 9

This departs completely from a world where binaries war and oppress in order to gain the upper hand over the other value, a world where “big” is the standard upon which to demand that “small" assimilate to it, and “small” loses value as much as it lacks from “big.” Kim Tschang-Yeul, on the other hand, testifies that the many binaries contained by water droplets are not relations or aesthetics of conflict but of accord. The universe of binary coexistence soothes the wounds of conflict and spreads beyond itself the snugness of a calm that heals these scars.

III. The Thousand-Character Classic as a Tool, not Truth The Thousand-Character Classic earned its fame as a textbook for Chinese characters since the Tang Dynasty when characters from Wang Xizhi (303-361)’s writing were collected and disseminated throughout East Asia. Despite its fame, the criticism of whether it is appropriate as a beginner’s textbook for Chinese characters has persisted since the Joseon Dynasty in Korea. Jeong Yak-Yong (1762-1836) was one of the scholars who harshly criticized the

Thousand-Character Classic for its ineffectiveness as educational material, arguing that it reflects the old history of Chinese dynasties and lacks connectivity in meaning. He would instead even write a separate textbook for children entitled Ahakpyeon (兒學編).

Despite such controversies, the Thousand-Character Classic beginning with “tian (天, sky), di (地, earth)” enjoyed popularity among the public for the study of Chinese characters. It was in 1986 that Kim Tschang-Yeul started painting water drops on backgrounds of the Thousand-

Character Classic , based on his memory of teachings from his grandfather in hometown Maengsan, Pyongannam-do.10 Here we should pay attention to the significance of the Thousand-

Character Classic . In Kim’s painting, it does not symbolize education of Chinese characters, but is a symbol of text in general, of a “classic (truth)” as text consisting of accumulation of letters. While searching for a support for water droplets, the artist had first utilized French newspaper Le Figaro (1975), then eventually switched to the Thousand-Character Classic – because it proved more effective than other options like jute or newspapers to surface the semi-transparency and weight

of droplets.11 Furthermore, the text (Thousand-Character Classic) symbolizes the values and value systems the artist learned as a child, and serves as a universal vessel for particular values and truth.

In fact, the combination of Chinese characters and images was also attempted in minhwa (folk painting) of the Joseon Dynasty. They featured the letter Su (壽, life) or the phrase

Hyo-Je-Choong-Shin-Ye-Ui-Yeom-Chi (孝悌忠信禮義廉恥, filial piety, fraternal devotion, loyalty, trust, courtesy, commitment, integrity, and humility) and painted illustrations of related stories in between strokes of the letters. They channeled the desire for a long life, or emphasis on key virtues of Confucianism. Each and every letter, therefore, functions like a text, which reflects the belief in magic where writing and posting a certain letter in one’s home would allow them to possess its power. Writing the letter Su (壽), for example, was believed to grant longevity and Hyo (孝) would grant a loyal son. In effect, it projects human desires through written letters. In other words, Chinese characters and water drops show similarities with minhwa in terms of subjects.

However, Kim Tschang-Yeul’s droplets and the Thousand-Character Classic demonstrate different compositions than the letter paintings of minhwa. In Water Drops or the

Recurrence series, sometimes the text becomes more prominent due to droplets, other times become fainter; some revealed, others concealed. The composition wanders ceaselessly - the text might sit in orderly lines, crammed in the center, at one side, or at a crooked angle. Droplets additionally deliver a trick-eye effect or illusion that one perceives things that do not exist, like the pearl earring in Vermeer’s Girl with a Pearl Earring . As described, it is difficult to pinpoint the general tendency in water droplets and the Thousand-Character Classic (letters, text, classic, truth) and they form a multiplicity of variations by painting. This tendency can be interpreted in two different angles.

First, the truth of the Thousand-Character Classi c does not allow for the entry of anything external to it. It is in itself sacred. A water droplet that comes too close can damage its truth. To prevent the Thousand-Character Classic from eroding, one must prevent droplets from approaching it. It is an expectable sequence of events. If this event happens, the droplets will be as damaged as the text, losing their form as they permeate the letters.

But whereas water droplets remain droplets in paintings, the Thousand-Character

Classic does not reveal its full self. Rather, it infinitely wanders throughout a series of paintings unable to recuperate its integrity or discover its position. The Thousand-Character Classic , at losing the stable ground of its foundation, free-floats in the space like an island. So the threat of text eroding has become realized even without water droplets touching the Thousand-Character

Classi c. How can this formal contradiction be understood? Surely, the irony cannot occur in reality. We may have to see this as a process of water droplets having revealed obscured parts of the Thousand-Character Classic instead of having erased its truth. The more droplets emerge as support, the more the shrouded text can gradually reveal itself - as the adult Kim TschangYeul digging deeper and deeper into his childhood memories through water droplets. Childhood memories have fainted and dimmed from passage of time, but with the light on water droplets that swim back in time, become reactivated as conspicuous sculptures, with parts enlarged, gradually increasing as a fragment connects to other fragments. With more restoration, recurrence becomes that much more completed. Such a course of analysis can explain a side that draws the artist’s Subconscious into Semi-Conscious, then back into Consciousness. .

Yet, water droplets and the Thousand-Character Classic cannot be solely exhausted as the return of adult Kim Tschang-Yeul to his childhood self. Recurrence and complicated levels of consciousness beyond the subconscious in an individual’s history. Then how may we reevaluate the relationship between water droplets and the floating Thousand-Character Classic? On the level of common sense or science, we would anticipate that water drops will permeate and disappear into the text, thus leading to both becoming erased at the moment when water drops touch the

Thousand-Character Classic . As aforementioned, droplets remain droplets while the text never reveals its full self. Now changing perspective, let’s consider the Thousand-Character Classic not as half revealed, but as half erased.

As much as the Thousand-Character Classic is erased, its stronghold of truth loses authority and starts to collapse. In fact, this phrasing may be misleading - since the Thousand-

Character Classic is not in itself the truth, and these two terms are fundamentally separate. The Thousand-Character Classic is only a set of letters as a tool to reveal truth. So it is not truth that was erased, only its letters. This can be seen as Kim Tschang-Yeul’s modern reproduction of the relationship between text and truth that has been key to East Asian aesthetics.

Laozi and Zhuangzi had once suggested Quipu or parables as an alternative to language that can never completely convey truth.12 Zen Buddhist texts Platform Sutra and

Śūraṅgama Sūtra also warn against the misreading of letters themselves as truth, through the anecdote of fingers and the moon.13 When one points at the moon, someone might think of the finger itself as the moon, instead of following its direction to the moon. In other words, one may be unaware that the finger merely “points at” the moon and is not equal to it. For example, Zen Buddhism preaches “do not establish words and letters (不立文字), and the special transmission outside teaching (敎外別傳),” an actual transcendence of text, diverging from dependence on written letters and Zhuangzi argues for “forgetting about the fish trap once you catch fish (得魚忘 筌),” comparing letters to a fish trap.14

The Thousand-Character Classic (text), like the finger or fish trap, is a mere tool that directs towards truth (the moon). To equate the erasure of the Thousand-Character Classic to the erasure of truth is to become subject to a “the ailment of letters” that confuses letters with truth itself. In other words, it would be a worshipping of letters, of an idol. Then how should one overcome this misunderstanding? The only antidote is to unravel forms of the Thousand-

Character Classic and to let its status float. When the text disintegrates, one would initially attempt to thumb back one’s memory to reconstruct it. But even if one can partially recover it, the entire text can never return to wholeness. At attempting to, one can only eventually accept the fact that any restoration is impossible.

Moreover, one comes to the realization that the Thousand-Character Classic as a tool for a particular truth had been concealing a universal truth, that is, the fact that we can no longer fathom truth within the Thousand-Character Classic . We may initially be flustered at facing this fact, but in time will regain balance. When we accept that the text is not in itself the truth,

we finally turn attention to the truth beyond it. This precisely constitutes the return of universal truths beyond contexts of individual history - like the monk Budai in Pointing At the Moon (指月圖) or Hotei Pointing at the Moo n (指月包袋圖) by Fugai Ekun(風外惠薰, 1568-1654?) of the Edo Period who stretches his hand to point at a moon beyond the canvas. Through the relationship between water drops and the Thousand-Character Classic , Kim Tschang-Yeul criticizes the contemporary time during which its inhabitants who cannot meet truth in the throes of an “ailment of letters,” and simultaneously invites them to the truth beyond letters.

IV. Between Water Droplets and Their Support, or a Stroll Through Another Infinite Universe Now we can examine the similarities between the droplets foreshadowed in Rite series, and those appeared in the Recurrence series. Both act as sources of ceaseless regeneration (creation) in Kim Tschang-Yeul’s paintings like the snake Ouroboros biting its own tail.15 In reality, when a droplet touches something, it can no longer retain its shape. In Kim’s paintings, even while droplets continuously morph into different shapes, they remain as water droplets while some part of them becomes lighter or darker, whole or disfigured. That is, a formal contradiction that cannot occur in reality is visualized. This cannot be accessed with the language of cause and consequence - as the consequence had occurred without a cause.

So how is such a thing possible? Water droplets and the Thousand-Character Classic live in the same two-dimensional flatness, but the infinite expansion of gaps in between them create the three-dimensional space. That is, two-dimensional plane on the horizontal axis is substituted with three-dimensional space as a combination of horizontal and vertical axes. Kim Tschang-Yeul actually employs this specific strategy in installation works Consciousness (1993) and Recurrence (1993). In other cases, he had also placed droplets (of glass) upon wood, sand, or iron. Water drops are the cause behind certain events. And the canvas is the site, and result, of either doing or not-doing from that cause.

People live in their individual realms through a string of making free choices. But in realms beyond the individual, they are not given a choice and are instead existentially thrown upon the world. And so fortune and misfortune are granted indiscriminately. How can art, then, heal the wounds of past and present that individuals cannot bear? First let us expand the gap between cause and effect. Then, the cause may still happen upon people but in an infinitely stretched time it can no longer function as a cause. The more infinite the gap between droplets and their support, the more their descending approaches a standstill. On contrary, a result already vividly visualizes the reality issuing from a cause. And here the tables are turned - where the cause does not act on result but the result works on its cause to rescind its effectiveness. An event that should not happen, should not happen. Philosophy, for one, leads people to envision a better life based on logic and contemplation; whereas art enables a better life based on contradictions and creation. Seen this way, if premonitions of water droplets in Rite represent the scratches on a body, the simplified ones in Recurrence represent a calmness of consciousness (mind and body) that allows others’ existence. Both formalize to a reality that existed through the ages, each representing groans of pain and harmonies of peace, and the craze from wounds and calm of healing.

I first felt light and warmth at seeing Kim Tschang-Yeul’s water droplets, but at a moment those transformed into darkness and pain. As I was writing, I was seized by the imagination that, as Kim had lived through times of war and wandering, his droplets could be a bomb itself and its flash of light, or its sound of explosion. I pushed the idea away as ludicrous, only to conjure it back later at the artist’s own comment: “I often recalled memories from war. I had water droplets replace requiems for the deceased. To paint was to soothe the spirits of those who passed away (as cited in Cohen, 1994)”; “What I am expressing with water droplets right now is an ‘expansion’ of what I expressed with dots when I used to paint about scars.” 16 Rite and Recurrence produced in different periods, are not completely separate works, but they are all positioned on a trajectory of sublimating the same material through simplification. If the endlessly falling bombs leave wounds, they are substituted with the comforting sound of each note to become music. So his music is in essence a requiem.

The space constructed by Kim Tschang-Yeul is a world where things that should not happen do not happen - or one that contains lamentations as such. It is precisely the world of peace where the bastion of my ego crumbles beyond anxiety towards calm, and we can once again coexist with others. It is reminiscent of Zhuangzi’s nomadic journey from dissolving logic to first stroll through uselessness, then again to discover the space between usefulness and uselessness, eventually to freely float upon the one way (Tao) that transcends fame and criticism. It is thanks to inducement of an “in-between,” like that between the droplets and their support, reality and fantasy, that the process leads to infinite change.17 The more the Thousand-Character Classic wanders and floats, the more water drops can emanate diverse harmonies. This is the reason why Kim Tschang-Yeul’s paintings enjoy a certain musicality.

‘물방울의 화가’로 칭해지는 김창열의 작업에 대한 미술사적 평가를 살피다 보면 그의 작업이 70년대 미술계를 주도한 단색화나 70년대 후반의 극사실주의 맥락 속에서 다루어지고 있음을 알게 된다. 물방 울이라는 구체적인 대상을 극사실적으로 재현한 작품이 단색화와 함께 맥락화 될 수 있다는 사실은 그의 작업 이 구상과 추상, 재현과 개념, 사실과 환영, 동양과 서양이라는 논제의 중간에 놓여 있음을 의미한다. 이처럼 다양한 결을 드러내는 김창열 작업의 조형적 특징은 몇 가지로 크게 나누어 볼 수 있는데, 이번 갤러리현대의 개인전은 ‘문자’에 초점을 맞추고 있다. 김창열의 많은 작업이 문자와 함께 제시됨에도 불구하고 정작 그의 작 업에서 ‘문자’가 갖는 상징성을 분석하려는 시도가 거의 이루어지지 않았던 점을 감안할 때, 이번 전시는 작가 작업에 대한 새로운 접근방식은 물론 그의 작업이 함유하는 다양한 층위를 살피는 계기가 되리라 기대한다.

김창열 작업에서 문자가 갖는 의미를 살피기 위해서는 먼저 작업의 변화과정과 작가가 물방울 을 인식하는 방식과 태도의 변화를 살피는 것이 필요하다. 김창열의 작업에 물방울이 들어온 것은 70년대 초 반 파리 정착 이후이다. 그런데 물방울이 화면에 나타나면서 ‘빛’ 또한 작업의 중요한 요소로 등장한다. 화면 속 물방울들은 화면 밖에서 들어오는 빛을 받아 빛나고, 그 대각선 아래쪽에는 빛이 산란하여 나타나는 스펙 트럼의 그림자가 자리한다. 이처럼, 물방울 작업에는 빛과 빛의 반사효과, 그리고 거기에서 발생하는 그림자가 중요한 조형적 요소로 등장하는데, 이들 요소는 70년대 후반을 지나며 변화를 보이기 시작한다. 모델링 페이 스트를 사용하여 빛의 하이라이트를 강조하거나 그림자 부분을 에어브러시 대신 유화 물감을 사용하여 그려 냄으로써 환상적인 그러데이션 효과 대신 좀 더 확고한 존재감을 가진 그림자를 화면에 등장시키는 것이 그것 이다. 이러한 변화로 인해 물방울의 밝게 빛나는 하이라이트 부분과 어두운 그림자 부분이 극적인 대조를 이 루게 되는데, 이는 결국 찰나의 순간에 반짝이는 하나의 물방울 속에 빛과 어둠이 공존하고 있음을 알 수 있 게 한다.

물방울 속에 공존하는 빛과 그림자는 어둠은 빛으로부터, 빛은 어둠으로부터 비롯된다는 동양 의 음양 사상을 반영하고 있다. 빛과 어둠의 공존은 우주 변화의 기본요소이자 만물의 근원인 음양이 나누어

지기 이전의 상태, 즉 태극의 상태를 의미한다. 상호 보완적인 요소인 음과 양이 서로 맞물려 돌며 더 큰 차원 의 태극을 이루어가는 동양적 우주 형성의 기본원리인 태극은 모든 변화의 근본적인 동력이라 할 수 있다. 이 처럼 작가는 물방울에 빛과 어둠을 공존하게 함으로써 처음이자 끝의 단계, 만물을 잉태하고 있는 태극의 원 리를 담아내고 있다. 이러한 원리의 적용은 작가의 물방울 인식과 관련되어 있는데, 작가는 70년대 자신의 물 방울을 한국전쟁 때 죽어간 망자들을 위로하기 위한 진혼곡으로 제시한다. 60년대 그의 작업이 전쟁에서 죽 어간 친구들을 생각하며 제작한 격정적인 붓 터치를 이용한 제의적 성격의 앵포르멜 경향을 보여주었다면, 그 연장선에 놓은 70년대 진혼곡으로서의 물방울은 울분과 격정이 진정된 지점에서 망자들을 위한 추모와 기원 의 마음을 담고 있다. 찰나의 순간에 스러지는 물방울 속에 우주 생성의 원리를 담음으로써 작가는 물방울을 죽은 영혼을 위로하는 진혼곡으로 변환시키고 있는 것이다. 이는 마치 한 알의 모래 속에서 우주를 보았던 시 인처럼 작가 역시 한 방울의 물방울 속에서 만물의 시작과 끝을 보고 있는 것이라 할 수 있다.

작가가 우주 생성의 원리인 음양, 태극론을 자신의 물방울과 화면에 구체적으로 연결시키기 시작한 시점을 정확히 확 정하기는 어려우나 작가 스스로도 노장사상을 연구하였음을 밝히 고 있고, 실제 1980년을 전후한 시기 도가의 원리를 작업에 담으 려는 노력을 기울였음을 <4요소>(1985)(참고도판)를 통해 살필 수 있다. 이 작품은 화면의 네 모서리에 괘를 배치하고 그 중 한 괘 를 물방울로 대체한 작품이다. 주역의 기본을 형성하는 괘는 인간 과 자연의 존재 양상, 변화의 원리를 상징하는 기호이다. 이중 4 괘는 하늘을 상징하는 건(乾), 땅을 상징하는 곤(坤), 물을 상징하 는 감(坎), 불을 상징하는 리(離)로 구성되는데, 이들 4괘는 동양 철학의 뿌리를 형성한다. 작가는 하늘, 땅, 불을 상징하는 세 개

의 괘를 각각의 모서리에 그려 넣은 후, 나머지 한 모서리에 물방울을 그려 넣고 작품의 명제를 서양의 ‘4요소 (물, 불, 공기, 흙)’로 명명하고 있다. 4괘와 4요소의 차이는 동양에서는 하늘이라 하고 서양의 경우는 공기로 칭하는 차이를 드러내는데, 동양에서의 4괘가 동양철학의 뿌리를 형성하며 모든 변화의 원리를 상징하는 것처 럼, 서양에서의 4요소 역시 우주를 형성하는 기본 요소라 할 수 있다. 이렇게 볼 때, 작가는 동서양을 아우르 는 근원적인 것과 우주 형성의 기본요소에 대해 고민하고 그것을 물방울과 연동시키려는 노력을 기울이고 있 음을 확인할 수 있다.

한편, 김창열 작업에서 물방울과 빛 이외에 중요한 조형 요소로 등장하는 것이 문자이다. 그의 작업에 문자가 등장하는 것은 물방울이 놓이는 지지체에 대한 고민에서 비롯된 것으로 보인다. 초기 작업의 경우, 물방울이 놓이는 지지체는 바탕칠하지 않은 캔버스나 모래였다. 이 시기 물방울들은 지지체가 보여주는 물성과 대조적으로 환영적 효과를 화면에 드리우며 팽팽한 긴장감을 유발하지만, 생지의 캔버스가 만들어내는

무한한 공간 속에 부유하듯 떠 있음으로써 물방울은 현실의 그것으로 인식되기보다는 실재하지만 실재하지 않 는 환영으로, 실재와 상상이 만나는 지점에 위치하게 된다. 이러한 화면 효과는 작가로 하여금 물방울과 바탕 의 지지체를 매개하려는 다양한 노력을 경주하게 하는데, 그 결과, 물방울이 바탕으로 스며든 것 같은 효과나, 텐픽스를 이용하여 화면 뒤쪽에서 스며 나오는 비정형적인 형태가 물방울과 함께 어우러지는 작업, 또는 글자 의 획이 화면에 등장하는 작업으로 이어진다.

김창열 작업에 문자의 등장은 이처럼 물방울과 지지체와의 관계를 재설정하는 과정에서 비롯 된다. 실재계를 벗어난 곳에 위치하는 물방울을 현실의 그것으로 만들기 위해 작가는 현실을 그대로 반영하는 『휘가로』지의 지면을 통해 처음으로 화면에 문자를 도입하였다. 하지만, 세 명의 무장강도가 은행을 털었다는 기사와 처칠의 전시회 풍자만화가 실린 지면 위에 물방울을 재현한 <휘가로지>(1975)의 경우, 어쩔 수 없이 신 문이 전하는 현실의 날 것 그대로의 소식은 김창열 작품 속 물방울의 의미에 변화를 초래하게 된다. 작가의 제 작 의도와는 관련 없는 신문 기사로 인해 물방울이 다른 문맥을 형성하게 된 것은 이후 작가로 하여금 바탕재 와 물방울 간의 지지체의 평면성과 그 위에 놓이는 대상이라는 역할에 좀 더 중점을 두고 그것을 부각하기 위 한 방법으로 바탕 효과를 변화 시켜 나가게 한다. 그 결과, 화면에는 가로와 세로, 삐침 등으로 해체된 문자의 획, 파편화된 문자가 등장하게 되는데, 이를 통해 바탕의 평면성을 강조하고, 그를 통해 현실계를 재구성한다. 더 나아가, 김창열은 해체되었던 획들을 합체하여 온전한 한자를 작업에 활용하기 시작하는데, <회귀> 시리즈 로 명명된 작업에서 화면 위의 한자는 물방울이 놓이는 바탕이자 물방울과 지지체와의 관계를 구체화하는 역 할을 수행한다.

이러한 과정에서 화면에 도입된 한자는 다양한 조형적 변화를 거친다. 주로 천자문이나 도덕경 의 형태를 띠며 나타나는 한자는 초기의 그것이 인쇄된 상태를 그대로 반영하여 잉크가 덜 묻은 부분까지도 재현하고 있다면, 라텍스를 사용한 이후에는 문자와 바탕의 음양이 바뀌어 드러나거나, 라텍스로 쓴 한자 위 에 안료를 덧입힘으로써 다양한 물감의 층위를 형성하기도 한다. 특히, 라텍스를 이용한 작업의 경우, 시차를 두고 라텍스와 안료 작업을 함으로써 화면 위에는 서로 다른 안료의 층이 형성된다. 이처럼 작가의 노동과 시 간을 화면에 축적하는 작업 방식은 이후 빽빽하게 화면 위에 겹쳐서 써 내려간 한자 연습 작업으로 이어지는 데, 화면 전체를 한자로 뒤덮은 올-오버(all-over)적 화면은 물방울이 놓이는 바탕을 제공한다. 한편, 천자문이나 도덕경의 형태를 띠며 나타나는 한자와 관련하여 작가는 그것이 도덕에 관한 이야기임을 강조하고 있다. 이는 천자문이나 도덕경이 김창열 작업에 내용적인 의미를 제공하는 요소임을 의 미한다. 흔히, 천자문은 한문에 입문하기 위한 기초적인 1,000글자로 이해되어 왔다. 하지만 실제 천자문은 4 자 2구로 된 125편의 시에 우주 자연과 인간 삶의 이치를 담아내고 있는 고시이며, 주역을 비롯한 동양사상의 정수를 그 내용으로 삼고 있다. 예를 들어 천자문에서 가장 처음 나오는 하늘 天, 땅 地, 검을 玄, 누를 黃, 집 宇, 집 宙, 넓을 洪, 거칠 荒 (天地玄黃, 宇宙洪荒)은 우리가 살고 있는 이 세계가 시간과 공간으로 덮여있다는

구성 원리를 드러내는 한편 시작도 없고 끝도 없는 우주의 모습을 표현하고 있다. 하늘과 땅은 검고 누르며, 우주는 넓고 거치니라는 뜻으로 풀이되는 天地玄黃, 宇宙洪荒은 동양적 세계관과 우주관을 담고 있는 글귀인 것이다. 이처럼 천자문에 실려 있는 내용은 단순한 낱글자를 모아 놓은 것이 아니라, 모든 문장이 하나의 이야 기이며, 역사이며, 동시에 철학이요 사상이다.

천자문과 더불어 작가가 자주 화면에 담고 있는 도덕경은 노자의 무위자연에 대한 핵심사상을 담고 있다. 작가 스스로도 노장의 가르침을 작업에 반영하기 위해 따로 공부하였음을 피력하고 있고 더 나아 가 80년대를 전후하여 작가 스스로 작업을 하는 의미를 “나의 자아를 무화시키는 것”으로 이야기하고 있는 지 점은 주목을 요한다. 무위자연 사상에 근거한 이러한 인식의 전환은 무위의 태도로 의도적인 창작을 대신하 며, 현실의 세상사보다는 개인의 내면적 수양에 미학적 의미를 두고 있음을 뜻하는 것이다. 그런데 이러한 태 도는 70년대 후반 국내에서 노장사상에 근거하여 단색화의 비평적 담론이 제기된 이후 한국회화에 단색화라 는 ‘집단적 개성’이 드러나는데 중추적 역할을 한 작업방식과 맥을 같이 하는 것으로 파악된다. 즉, 그의 작업 태도는 “주문을 외우듯, 참선을 행하듯.... 단조로운 행위의 반복을 통한 수련”으로 자신의 작업방식을 설명하 는 박서보나 그러한 박서보의 작업방식에 대해 “수련을 통해 자신을 비워내는 것”으로 설명하는 이우환의 논조 와 같은 지점에 위치하고 있다.

단색화 작가들이 수행적으로 행하는 캔버스 위에서의 반복적인 행위가 계획된 의지와 의도에 의한 것이라기보다는 재료가 가지고 있는 물성이 자연스럽게 드러나거나 우연적 요소가 발현될 여지를 열어둠 으로써 작가의 권위가 폐기되거나 의문에 부쳐지는 비개성적 익명성에 근거한다는 점을 감안할 때, 김창열의 사전 계획에 의거한 반복적인 물방울 그리기는 단색화와 분명한 변별점을 드러낸다. 하지만, 이러한 차이점에 도 불구하고 한지 위에 빼곡하게 화면을 메꾸듯 써 내려간 <회귀> 시리즈에서 작가가 보여주는 작업방식은 작 가 스스로가 동서양의 차별점으로 규정한 자신을 비워내는 작업방식을 그대로 실현하고 있다. 그것은 어릴 적 붓글씨 연습을 하듯 화면 전체에 도덕경이나 천자문을 끊임없이 겹쳐서 써 내려감으로써 바탕재 자체를 완전 히 메우고, 그 위에 물방울을 포치하는 작업인데, 이들 작업에서 끊임없이 써 내려간 붓글씨는 자신을 비워내 는 수련의 과정이자 반복적인 행위를 통해 자신을 무념무상의 상태로 무화시키고자 하는 과정이라 할 수 있 다. 이처럼 자신을 내려놓고 스스로의 존재마저도 무화시키려는 태도, 만물의 시작과 끝 그리고 찰나와 영겁을 품은 물방울이 어우러져 만들어내는 김창열의 작업은 한평생을 물방울을 통해 세상을 바라보고 파악한 노대 가가 우리에게 던져주는 질문이자 화두라 할 수 있다.

Between Moment and Eternity

At examining art historical evaluations of Kim Tschang-Yeul the “Waterdrop Painter”, one quickly realizes his works have been positioned within Dansaekhwa of the 1970s or Hyperrealism of the late 70s. The fact that his hyperrealistic representations of a tangible object, water droplets, has been contextualized in lieu of Dansaekhwa, suggests that his works hover between figurative and abstract, representation and concept, reality and illusion, East and West.

Such diverse aspects that Kim Tschang-Yeul’s work reveals, can be divided into several parts.

Among these various features, Gallery Hyundai's exhibition focuses on ‛text.’ Given that the attempts have been barely made to analyze the symbolism of “text” in Kim’s work despite many of his work being presented with texts, this exhibition is expected to provide an opportunity to explore the various layers contained in Kim’s paintings as well as a new methodology to approach his work.

In order to examine the significance of text in Kim Tschang-Yeul’s oeuvre, one must first recognize shifts in his perception of and attitude towards water drops. It was the early 1970s, following his move to Paris, that water drops entered Kim’s works. As the water drops emerged in the canvas, another key element “light” also appeared. Droplets on the canvas glow, reflecting the light entering from outside the frame, and a spectral shadow sits on the opposite bottom corner as an effect of the light’s refraction. As such, water drop paintings highlight light and its reflective properties, as well as ensuing shadows as important formal elements, which all would start to transform in the late 70s - that is, utilizing modeling paste to emphasize highlights and oil paint in place of air brush enabled shadows to claim a more solid position departing from fantastical effects of gradation. This shift led to a dramatic contrast between the bright luminosity of the droplets’ highlights and the darkness of shadows, capturing both light and dark in one fleeting moment of a

droplet’s blink.

The coexistence of light and shadow within water drops ref lects the Eastern philosophy of Yin and Yang where dark emanates from light and light from dark. This coexistence therefore points toward Taeguk, or the Great Ultimate(Taiji), the building block of all changes in the universe and the state before Yin and Yang were carved from one another. Taeguk, the basic principle of the formation of an Eastern cosmology in which the complementary elements, Yin and Yang, are interlocked and form an expanded state of being, is the fundamental driving force of all changes. Similarly, Kim Tschang-Yeul juxtaposes light and dark in droplets as a vessel of the Taeguk principle, in itself pregnant with both beginning and end, and all existing things.

The application of this principle relates to the artist’s perception of water drops; he suggests his droplets in the 70s, for example, as a requiem for souls that perished during the Korean War. If his works from the 60s demonstrated stormy brushstrokes of a suggestive, Informel nature as an ode to friends who died in the war, his 70s requiem is at its continuation but more in the spirit of memorializing and commemorating the dead after the initial burst of emotions has settled down.

By containing the cosmological principles within a transient droplet, the artist transfigures water drops into a requiem for perished souls. As the poet who saw a whole universe in a grain of sand, Kim Tschang-Yeul also looks out into the beginning and end of all creation within a single droplet of water.

It is difficult to pinpoint the exact moment when the artist started making a

tangible connection between Yin and Yang cosmology or the concept of Taeguk and his water drop paintings. Yet, we can surmise from Four Elements (1985) (fig. p.108) and the artist’s statement on studying the thoughts of Laozi that the period around 1980 demonstrated a heightened endeavor to realize these topics. Four Elements places I Ching trigrams in four corners of the canvas, replacing one of them with water drops. The trigrams form the foundations of I Ching, symbolizing the modes of being among humans and nature, and the principles behind their transformations.

Among these, the four trigrams consist of sky (geon, 乾), earth (gon, 坤), water (gam, 坎), and fire (ri, 離) that are at the roots of Eastern philosophy. The artist inscribed the symbols of sky, earth, and

water; then he placed a droplet in the remaining corner and titled the work Four Elements (Water, Fire, Air, Earth), adopting a Western terminology. The difference between trigrams and the four elements lies between the Eastern “sky” and Western “air,” but the Western four elements form building blocks of the universe much like its Eastern counterpart that contains all forms of change.

In this respect, we can confirm how Kim Tschang-Yeul contemplates the universal cosmological elements traversing East and West and strives to sync them with his water droplets.

Another key formal element in Kim’s works, aside from water drops and light,

is text. It seems that the appearance of text originates from contemplations on support structures upon which water droplets land. In earlier works, the support structures consisted of ungrounded canvas or sand. Droplets of this period cast an illusionistic effect in contrast to the materiality of their support, creating a sense of unresolved suspense — on the other hand, ones floating in the infinite space of raw canvas inhabit the meeting point between reality and fiction, as an existing but not really existing illusion rather than being instantly recognized as its real-life referent.

This effect prompts the artist to attempt a mediation between water drops and their background support which leads to an effect of droplets seeping into the background, the works where irregular shapes of tinfix that seep out from behind the canvas and harmonize among droplets, or the works where strokes of letters appear.

The text in K im Tschang-Yeul ’s oeuvre thus arises from the process of

reconstituting the relationship between water drops and their support. In order to transfer the droplets outside reality into the actual referent, the artist first introduced text in the form of pages from Le Figaro that reflects the real world. However, the articles of a bank robbery and a satirical comic on Churchill’s exhibition on Le Figaro ’s very crude announcement on the reality inevitably induces a change in the meaning of Kim Tschang-Yeul’s water drops. The fact that the droplets formed a different context due to the irrelevance of articles to the artist’s creative intention encourages Kim to put more emphasis on the flatness of the support that lies between droplets and their background material, and the position of droplets as objects placed upon the latter in order to switch background effects. Therefore, deconstructed letters emerge in horizontal, vertical, and swooping strokes, through which the flatness of backgrounds can be underlined and the realm of reality can be restored. Furthermore, Kim would begin to recombine fragmented strokes to utilize whole Chinese characters in his work. For instance, his series Recurrence not only features Chinese characters the background to droplets but they actualize the relationship between water drops and their support.

In the process, Chinese characters upon canvas experience a myriad of formal

transformations. Often materialized in the form of the Thousand-Character Classic or Tao Te

Ching , Chinese characters, reflecting their early iterations, even reenact the surface parts with sparse ink from the printing process; whereas later ones following the introduction of latex form different painted layers by switching the text with its background or layering pigment on characters written in latex. Especially in works involving latex, the staggered use of latex and pigments creates the separate layers of different pigments. Processes that accumulate the artist’s labor and time upon canvas as such would continue in the form of Chinese character practice works that crowd the entire canvas, and this plane, covered with Chinese characters all-over, provide a background upon which droplets sit.

On the other hand, on the form of the Thousand-Character Classic or Tao

Te Ching , the artist highlights their ethical content. Such emphasis implies that these texts imbue narrative content to Kim’s works. The Thousand-Character Classic has commonly been understood as the one thousand elementary Chinese characters for beginners. However, the

Thousand-Character Classic in reality is an ancient collection of 125 poems, each of two stanzas and four letters, containing the ways of the natural universe and human life, centering on the key concepts of Eastern philosophy mentioned in I Ching . For example, the first characters tian (天, sky), di (地, earth), xuan (玄, black), huang (黃, yellow), yu (宇, house), zhou (宙, space), hong (洪, wide), and huang (荒, rough) illustrate the infinite stretch of the universe that has no beginning or end, while revealing the structural principles that this world we inhabit are shrouded by time and space. Interpreted as “the sky and earth are black and yellow; the universe is wide and rough (天地玄黃, 宇宙洪荒),” the phrase conveys the Eastern view of the world and the wider universe.

As described, the content of the Thousand-Character Classic is not simply a collection of single characters but each sentence rather narrates a story, history, and stands as a philosophy and idea.

Tao Te Ching that makes a common appearance beside the Thousand-Character

Classic encompasses Laozi’s principal ideas on idle nature. The artist himself sets forth his supplementary research to reflect Laozi’s teachings in his work. Furthermore, the fact that he put the significance of his work as “relinquishing my own ego” around the 80s requires exceptional attention. This perceptual shift based on the concept of idle nature replaces intentional acts of creation with an attitude of inaction, and connotes the placing of aesthetic significance on an individual’s internal growth over affairs of the secular world. This approach is also read as a continuation of the work process seen as the backbone of Korean Dansaekhwa’s “collective ingenuity” following the establishment of its critical discourse in the 70s based on Laozi’s

philosophies. In other words, Kim Tschang-Yeul’s approach sides with Park Seo-bo’s “like speaking an incantation, like going into meditation … training through the repetition of simple acts” or Lee Ufan’s comment on Park’s method as “emptying oneself through training.”

Considering that repetitive acts of Dansaekhwa artists upon canvas are closer to

a spontaneous revealing of the materiality intrinsic to materials rather than a result of planning and intention, which opened the potential for coincidence and non-individual anonymity that manages to expunge, or at least question, the authority of the artist, Kim Tschang-Yeul’s premeditated repetition of water drops shows a clear point of departure from Dansaekhwa. Yet, albeit differences, the manner in which Kim adopts in the Recurrence series that densely fills out the background of traditional Korean paper with text realizes the process of relinquishing himself into a state free of all ideas that the artist stipulated as a distinction between East and West. It is the process of completely filling up the background by writing the Thousand-Character Classic or Tao Te Ching in countless overlapping layers as if practicing calligraphy when he was a child, and juxtaposing water droplets upon it; the repeated strokes of calligraphy is a way of training and a process of vacating himself into a state of impassivity through repetitive actions. This work of Kim Tschang-Yeul’s – a symphony of the attitude that surrenders oneself and expunges even his existence, and the droplets that contain both the beginning and end of all existing things, both the split moment and eternity, is a question and topic of conversation posed by an old master who has observed the world through the lens of water drop all his life.

문자와 물방울 김창열의 회화에 대하여

김창열에게는 물방울 화가라는 수식이 늘 따라다닌다. 바탕칠하지 않은 그대로의, 혹은 엷게 바탕칠을 한 캔버스에 그려진 크고 작은 무수한 물방울. 맑고 고요한, 자연의 리듬이 살아 있는 화면을 마주 하고 알 수 없는 평온함을 느끼는 사람은 나뿐만이 아닐 것이다. 지난 1983년 《한국현대미술전》이 전국의 공 립미술관에서 열렸는데, 이때 출품작의 태반은 엄숙한 모노크롬 회화였다. 김창열의 회화는 그 작품들과 같은 특질을 지니면서도 물방울이라는 매우 친숙한 모티프 때문에 관객을 밀어내지 않는, 평온하고 부드러운 분위 기를 자아냈던 것으로 기억한다. 아마도 미술관을 방문한 관객들 대부분이 김창열의 작품을 친근하게 여겼을 것이다.

그 후로도 김창열의 작품은 도쿄의 화랑 등에서 자주 소개되었는데, 모두 물방울 회화였던 것 으로 안다. 그렇기에 우리는 김창열이라는 화가와 물방울을 떼려야 뗄 수 없는 것으로 인식하고 그의 작품을 친근하게 느껴왔다. 그렇지만 우리는 김창열이 이후로 펼친 세계는 아직 파악하지 못했던 것이다. 그는 80년 대부터 오늘날까지 또 한 가지 중요한 테마에 몰두하고 있다. 그것은 다름 아닌 문자, 게다가 한글도 알파벳도 아닌 한자이다.

사카모토젠조 미술관(坂本善三美術館)은 해외 작가의 개인전으로는 처음으로 김창열의 작품 을, 그것도 한자 연작을 포함하여 보여줄 예정이다. 한자를 모티프로 한 작품들이 일본에 소개되는 건 이번이 처음이다. 이 전시를 통해 여태까지 알려지지 않았던 김창열의 새로운 면을 보게 될 것이다.

1929년에 태어난 김창열은 청년기에 한국전쟁을 겪은 세대이다. 서울에서 미술을 공부하던 김 창열은 한국전쟁이 발발하자 참전했고, 아마도 전쟁의 처참한 현실을 체험했을 테지만 이에 대해 그는 말을 아 낀다. 같은 세대의 다른 예술가들과 마찬가지로 그도 1960년대에 앵포르멜 회화의 세례를 받았다. 그리고 60 년대 중반부터 후반까지 뉴욕에서 공부했고, 일단 귀국했다가 70년에 파리로 건너간 뒤로는 오늘날까지 줄곧 파리에서 살면서 작업하고 있다. 한편으로 해마다 몇 달은 서울 근교에 마련한 작업실에서 보낸다. 이러한 이

중생활, 서양과 동양이라는 전혀 다른 문화적 환경 속에 자리 잡고 고국의 문화적 고유성을, 자신의 정체성을 항상 의식해야 했다는 사실이 그의 작업에 짙은 그림자를 드리웠을 것이다.

필자는 우연히 그의 서울 근교 아틀리에를 방문했는데, 거기에는 캔버스에 작업 중인 대작과 종 이에 그린 작품 등, 최근 작품 여러 점이 천장 높은 화실에 꼼꼼하게 정리되어 있었다. 물론 그러한 최근 작품 뿐만 아니라 앞서 제작한 물방울 회화와 앵포르멜 시기의 작품도 있었고, 필자의 염치없는 부탁에 화가는 친절 하게 응하여 이들 작품을 이것저것 보여주었는데, 덕분에 그때까지 도판으로만 보았던 화업의 궤적을 직접 확 인할 수 있었다. 60년대 중반 김창열의 앵포르멜 풍 회화에서는 무엇보다 견고한 마티에르가 눈길을 끈다. 오 렌지와 암적색의 어두운 색조의 바탕 위에 띠 모양의 색 면이나 몇 개의 선이 얹혀 있다. 그것은 마크 로스코 (Mark Rothko, 1903-1970)의 그림에 등장하는 띠 모양의 색 면을 연상시키기도 하지만, 로스코의 그림 속 망막하고 끝없이 드넓은 공간과는 달리, 오히려 화면의 견고함과 거기에 담긴 날카로움이 인상적이다. 물감을 두껍게 칠하고는 닦아내는 수고로운 작업을 거쳐 얻어낸 화면의 재질감은 오히려 장 포트리에(Jean Fautrier, 1898-1964)나 볼스(Wols, 1913-1951) 같은 화가가 만든 두꺼운 화면을 연상시킨다. 화면 자체가 사람들을 붙 잡아 가두는 두꺼운 벽처럼 느껴진다. 그리고 화면에 담긴 선과 알알이 얼룩진 색은 깊은 상흔처럼 다가온다.

김창열은 스스로 앵포르멜 풍 회화에 대해 ‘뭔가 울부짖고 싶은, 외치고 싶은 감정의 표출이었 다’라고 술회했다.1 물론 김창열은 앵포르멜을 주도했던 평론가 미셸 타피에(Michel Tapié, 1909-1987)의 선 언문을 일본의 미술 잡지 『미즈에(みずゑ)』를 통해서 알았고, 또 파리 청년 비엔날레 등에서 앵포르멜 작품을 실제로 접했다. 그러나 이는 단순히 서양에서 유행하던 스타일을 무비판적으로 추종한 것이 아니라 오히려 시 대와 개인이 안고 있던 감정의 절실한 토로라고 해야 할 것이다.

무겁고 답답한 느낌을 주는 앵포르멜 풍의 회화와 달리 물방울 회화는 더할 나위 없이 투명하 고 평온한 아름다움으로 가득하다. 물방울 연작의 시작은 그가 파리에서 작업하던 1972년으로 거슬러 올라 가는데, 1970년과 1971년 사이에 그린 <상흔> 혹은 <현상> 연작에 물방울 모티프가 등장한다. 이는 마치 어떤 종류의 액체가 잠언적인 상처들 같은, 그림의 표면에 있는 균열에서 흘러나오고 있는 것처럼 보인다. 그것은 무 기물 같은 느낌을 주는, 마치 수은의 방울과도 같은 묵직한 점액이다. 1972년부터 이 방울들은 그의 작품들 에서 흘러내리지 않은 채로 드러나서, 거의 그림들 밖으로 쏟아져 나오려는 물 같은 속성을 지니게 된다. 앵포 르멜 풍의 작품과 물방울 연작의 중간에 위치하는 이행기의 작품이라고 할 수 있다. 이와 달리 1972년 이후의 물방울 연작은 마치 벽에서 배어 나온 액체가 모든 괴로움과 더러움을 씻어 내고 깨끗한 천 위에 순수한 물방 울로 결정화한 것처럼 보인다.

김창열이 그린 물방울은 멀리서 보면 진짜 같다. 말하자면 가장 밝은 흰색으로 채워졌다가, 명 상의 인상을 주기 위한 노란색으로 덧붙여지고, 마지막으로 그림자를 암시하는 어두운 회색의 구성체로 이루 어진 명료하게 구분된 원들이다. 즉, 유화 물감이라는 물질의 집적일 뿐이다. 그럼에도 일정한 거리를 두고 보 면, 틀림없는 물방울의 가상으로서 나타난다. 단순하게 보자면 이는 르네상스 이래 서양미술에서 발전한 사실 적인 표현의 극치인 눈속임 그림, 트롱프뢰유(trompe-l’oeil)의 흐름을 이어받는다고 할 수도 있으며 70년대에 국제적으로 유행한 하이퍼 리얼리즘을 의식한 것으로 파악할 수도 있다.

그러나 김창열의 회화를 그런 단순한 리얼리즘 회화로 파악해서는 안 된다. 현실 세계에서 물방 울이 어떻게 만들어지는지를 생각해 봐야 한다. 유리 창문이든, 돌로 된 벽이든, 연잎이든 뭔가의 표면에 물이 얹히면 표면장력에 의해 조그마한 구체가 된다. 그것은 영원히 남는 모습이 아니라 순간의 이미지일 뿐이다. 김 창열의 회화에서 물방울이 맺힌 배경이 드러나는 경우가 좀처럼 없다는 점은 중요하다. 물방울은 항상 추상적 이고 중립적인 바탕 위에 놓여 있다. 즉, 캔버스는 어떤 환영적인 공간이 아니라 늘 마포(麻布)라는 현실의 물질 로서의 성격을 유지하면서, 붓으로 그린 물방울이라는 환영을 나타낸다. 유화 물감의 집적이 물방울로 보이는 것은 시각적인 환영일 뿐이다. 그러나 캔버스가 본래의 모습을 유지하기 때문에 화면 전체가 환영을 만들어내지 는 않고, 관객은 언제나 현실 세계로 돌아가게 된다. (한편, 김창열은 70년대 중반에 캔버스에 모래를 바르거나 널조각을 붙이고는 그 위에 물방울을 그리기도 했다. 이 경우에도 널조각이나 모래가 캔버스 위에 환영으로서 등장하는 게 아니라 현실의 물질이 회화에 들어온 것이었다. 캔버스가 바탕인 경우와 다를 게 없다.)

한데 이것이 단순히 환영적인 리얼리즘 회화가 아니라면, 김창열은 무엇을 지향했던 것일까.

김창열의 회화에서 물방울은 일정한 크기와 간격으로 규칙적으로 배열되지 않는다. 물방울 하 나하나는 크기와 모양이 미묘하게 다른데, 물론 되는 대로 그린 건 아니다. 물방울은 크거나 작고 뭉툭하거나 길쭉하고 반듯하거나 찌그러져 있다. 탐스럽게 반들거리는 물방울은 시간이 지나면서 중력에 의해 아래로 길

게 늘어지고, 뭉개지듯 일그러지고, 결국에는 부서져 사라져 버린다. 부서진 물방울은 이윽고 천에 흡수되어 얼룩으로 남거나 증발해 버릴 것이다. 스쳐 가는 시간 속에 나타났다 사라지는 물방울의 온갖 모습이 여기 담 겨 있다. 바꿔 말하면 물방울에 내포된 시간을 끌어내어 캔버스 위에 결정화한 것이다. 순간의 모습을 나타냄 으로써, 시간 속에서 생성되는 물방울의 다채로운 모습이 드러난다. 요컨대 그것은 시간의 회화이다.

이처럼 크기가 제각각인 물방울이 화면을 빼곡히 채우는가 하면, 단 하나의 물방울이 보석처럼 들어앉아 있는 경우도 있다. 혹은 널찍하게 여백을 남기고 화면 구석에 몇 개의 물방울을 그리기도 한다. 또, 어떤 작품에서는 물이 스며들어 생긴 갖가지 모양의 얼룩이 주역으로, 화면에 널찍하게 펼쳐진 이들 무수한 얼 룩 사이에 물방울이 놓인다 (덧붙이자면, 이러한 얼룩은 많은 경우 캔버스 뒷면에서 그려진다. 그로 인해 특유 한 질감과 공간성이 보증된다).

크기와 모양이 미묘하게 다른 물방울들이 캔버스라는 한정된 바탕 위에 단조롭지 않으면서도 균형을 이루면서 배열된다. 물방울 회화에서 화가의 의도는 다름 아닌 화면의 구성에 담겨 있다. 다시 말해 캔 버스에 그려진 모양과 형태들이 작가의 의도를 실현하는 것이다. 그러나 그것은 규칙적인 논리성이 아니라 우 주에 편재하는 일종의 생명의 율동이라고 할 만한 어떤 것에 의한 것이다. 어떤 중심이 없이 물방울이 화면을 가득 채운 올-오버(all-over) 작품도 있고, 다른 한편으로 여백을 의식하여 부재를 통해 존재를 드러내는 구성 을 시도하기도 한다. 아무것도 그리지 않은 바탕이 압도적으로 넓은 영역을 차지하는데 몇 개의 물방울이 구석 에 놓인다. 얄궂을 정도로 정묘한 구성이다. 시적인 공간의 아름다움과 질서가 화면을 지배한다. 여기에는 동 양의 전통적인 공간 감각이 살아 있다.

김창열의 물방울 연작은, 말하자면 물방울을 매개로 삼아 공간과 시간을 탐구하는 회화이다. 고국에서 멀리 떨어져 작업했던 김창열은 동양적인 전통에 뿌리를 두면서도 동시에 회화의 보편적인 문제를 탐 구한다는 독자적인 과제를 발견했다. 물방울이야말로 그 과제를 수행하는 수단이었다.

김창열의 회화에 한자가 처음으로 등장한 것은 1981년의 일이다. 그 뒤로 80년대 중반부터 몇 차례 시도하다가 80년대 말부터 본격적으로 활용하게 된다. 80년대 말 이후로 김창열은 자신의 작업을 ‘회귀 (Recurrence)’라고 명명했다. 그 전형적인 작품은 ‘천지현황(天地玄黃)’의 한 절로 시작하는 온갖 천자문이 단정한 해서체로 화면 오른쪽 귀퉁이부터 순서대로 꼼꼼하게 적혔다. 자간과 행간도 균일하고, 선명한 먹으로 쓰인 한자는 어떤

종류의 정신성을 느끼게 한다. 그러나 이러한 작품에는 한자만 담겨 있는 게 아니다. 한자 위에 무수한 물방울 이 겹쳐지듯 그려진다. 게다가 물방울이 놓인 부분은 한자의 색이 옅기 때문에 글자가 물에 녹아 사라지는 것 같은 느낌을 준다. 한자가 화면 전체를 가득 채우기도 하고, 넓은 여백과 함께 화면 구석이나 주변에 한자가 자 리 잡기도 한다. 때로는 클로즈업한 것처럼 한자를 커다랗게 그리기도 했고, 붉은색으로 한자를 쓰기도 했다. 어느 쪽이건 캔버스는 이미 단순한 배경이 아니라 한자가 담긴 일종의 텍스트이고, 이 위에 물방울이 놓인다.

종래의 물방울 연작과 달리 ‛한자’라는 새로운 요소가 도입되면서 단순한 표현이 뿜어내던 힘이 사라지고 주제의 집중도가 약해진 것처럼 보인다. 하지만 이는 어디까지나 도판으로 보았을 때의 느낌이고, 작 품을 실제로 보면 이런 느낌은 전혀 들지 않는다. 오히려 문자라는 비 회화적인 요소가 삽입되어 김창열의 회 화는 종래와 전혀 다른 의미를 띄게 된다.

‘천자문’은 고대 중국 양나라의 주흥사(周興嗣, 469-521)가 편찬한 것으로, ‘천지현황’으로 시 작하여 ‘언재호야(焉哉乎也)’로 끝나는 250구, 1,000자로 구성된 책이다. 예부터 중국뿐만 아니라 한자문화권 에서 공부를 처음 시작하는 이를 위한 교과서, 습자본으로 사용되어 왔다. 김창열 자신도 어렸을 때 할아버지 에게서 천자문을 쓰는 법을 배웠다고 한다. 한국의 교양 있는 부유한 계급의 자제들에게 천자문은 필수적인 학습 과정이었다. 아니, 한국뿐만 아니라 일본과 중국을 비롯한 동아시아 전역에서 일반적이었다. 한자문화권 공통의 교양, 문화적인 중추는 이런 장치를 통해 계승되어 왔다. 천자문은 그저 한자를 나열한 게 아니라 음 운을 고려한 용의주도한 배열 속에 유교적 우주관을 담았다. 요컨대 천자문은 동아시아 고유의 문명의 양상을 상징적으로 나타낸 것이다.

물론 오늘날 서울 거리를 걸어 다니다 보면 간판은 대부분 한글로 되어 있고 한자는 좀처럼 보 이지 않는다. 일본에서도 전후 세대는 천자문을 생소하게 여긴다. 그러나 고국에서 멀리 떨어진 타향에서 사는 김창열에게는 천자문 내지 한자 그 자체가 한국적인 것, 자신의 문화적 정체성의 절실한 표상이었다. 그런 의 미에서 ‘회귀’라는 제목은 무척 시사적이다. 김창열 자신이 자라난 문화적 환경에 대한 기억, 그리고 그에 대한 향수 어린 기억이 한편에 자리 잡고 있다. 또 한자와 유교로 대표되는 한국, 나아가 동아시아의 면면한 문화적 전통으로의 회귀라는 의미도 당연히 담겨 있다. 그러나 김창열은 민족주의적인, 혹은 지역적인 시점에 머물지 않고, 오히려 보편적인 인류 문명, 역사, 기억의 표상으로서 한자를 사용한 것으로 여겨진다.

김창열은 70년대 중반에 잠깐, 실제 신문지 위에 수채 물감으로 물방울을 그린 적이 있다. 올 이 거칠고 성긴 캔버스 대신에 신문지의 꽉 짜인 알파벳이 배경이 되었다. 김창열은 자신이 작품에 문자를 등 장시킨 경위에 대해 이렇게 술회한다.

“…화면이 커질수록 캔버스의 물질성이 사라져서는 휑한 공간이 되어 버립니다. 때로는 일상에

서 흔히 볼 수 있는 오브제로서 신문지 위에 물방울을 그렸는데, 아무런 무늬나 배경이 없는 종이에 그려 보면 그저 물방울의 허울뿐이고 투명한 느낌이나 양감은 모두 없어져 버립니다. 신 문지란 무엇일까요? 문자입니다. 문자라면 알파벳일까요, 한자일까요? 알파벳이 담긴 신문은 우아합니다. 그런데 알파벳은 인간의 지혜로 만들어낸 문자인데, 한자는 신이 만든 문자라고 합니다. 한자는 끝없이 울리고 끝없이 펼쳐집니다. 어린 시절 맨 처음 배운 글자이기 때문에 제 게는 감회가 깊은 천자문은 물방울의 동반자로서 서로를 받쳐주는 구실을 합니다.” 2

커다란 화면에서 공간의 문제를 해결하기 위해, 즉, 막막한 공간에 눈을 붙잡을 장치를 마련하 고 물방울에 투명한 느낌과 양감을 주기 위해 신문지를 끌어들였고, 더 나아가 배경으로서의 바탕에 한자를 그리게 된 것이다. 앞서 말한 대로 김창열이 알파벳이 아니라 한자를 선택한 것에는 문화적 정체성이 작용했을 것이다. 이 선택은 그에게 공간의 문제, 조형적인 문제뿐 아니라 회화의 의미에 대해 더 깊은 사고를 촉진하는 계기가 되었다. 주지하다시피 한자는 표의문자로서, 조형적인 형상이면서 동시에 글자 하나하나가 의미를 지닌 다. 이런 이유로 <회귀> 연작에서 배경의 한자 텍스트는 한자문화권 바깥의 관객에게는 그저 조형적 패턴으로 여겨지겠지만, 한자문화권에 속한 우리는 한자에서 의미를 제거하고 조형적 요소로만 바라볼 수는 없다. 어떻 게든 천자문이 내포하는 우주관이나 역사관에 대해 생각하게 된다.

예를 들어서 <회귀> 연작에는 몇몇 글자가 물에 녹아 사라져 가는 부분이 있다. 여기서 물방울 이라는 자연의 힘으로 문명이 침식되어 가는 양상을 나타내는 것처럼 여겨진다. 자연에 맞서 인간이 만들어낸 문명이 시간 속에 붕괴되고 풍화된다. <회귀> 연작에는 거대한 우주 한복판에서 자연과 인위가 만나는 한순간 이 결정화되어 있다고 할 수 있다.

김창열은 또 <회귀> 연작에서 캔버스뿐만 아니라 종이 작업도 시도했다. 커다란 한지에 먹과 아크릴 물감으로 그린 작품에서는 옅은 회색과 녹색 선을 겹겹이 교차시켜서 그물과도 같은 색채의 층이 화면 을 덮도록 했다. 이렇게 만든 색채의 그물 위에 물방울 몇 개가 자리 잡는데, 사실 이 색채의 그물은 겹쳐 쓴 한자로 이루어졌다. 화가는 종이 위에 한자를 쓰고, 그 위에 또 다른 글자를 겹쳐 쓴다. 옅은 먹이나 물감으로 문자를 겹쳤기 때문에 화면은 절대 탁해지지 않고, 오히려 투명한 느낌을 준다. 색채의 그물 사이로 종이의 바 탕색이 비쳐 보인다. 무수히 겹쳐진 한자는 마치 역사 자체를 보여주는 것 같다. 역사의 한 시기에 건설되었던 문명이 무너지고 그 위에 새로운 문명이 흥성한다. 그러한 문명의 흥망, 그 반복이 역사라면, 겹겹이 쌓인 한자 의 층 자체가 역사의 비유처럼 여겨진다.

그러나 여러 겹 쌓인 역사의 비유인 이러한 작품들에는 신비로운 빛이 깃들어 있다. 문자의 층

이 겹쳐져도 더 탁해지거나 어둡게 가라앉지 않는다. 화면 깊숙이, 역사의 층의 끄트머리에서 원초의 빛이 비 쳐 나온다. 그리고 그 층의 위에 물방울이 깃든다. 마치 역사의 과오와 비참을 정화하고 부드럽게 끌어안는 자 연의 은혜처럼. 물론 물방울 자체도 빛을 머금고 있다. 이처럼 빛으로 가득 찬 작품을, 나는 희망의 회화라고 부르고 싶다.

김창열은 물방울 회화에 한자를 끌어들여 이처럼 장대한 관점을 획득하는 데 성공했다. 이로써 우주와 인간, 자연과 문명을 함께 드러내고, 역사 속 인간의 모습을 보여주는 장소로서의 회화를 실현한 것이다.

이번 전람회는 규모가 아주 크지는 않지만, 김창열의 예술 세계를 전체적으로 파악하는 좋은 기회가 될 것이다. 물방울 회화와 함께 처음 소개된 한자 연작, 그리고 물방울을 삼차원으로 만든 유리 구체를 사용한 설치 작품, 이렇게 김창열의 작품 세계를 관통하는 흐름을 살펴보는 내용으로 이루어졌다. 이러한 것 들을 살피다 보면 비로소 이 화가가 선 자리가 보인다. 서양과 동양에 발을 걸쳐 놓으면서도 어느 한쪽으로 기 울지 않고, 한 사람의 동양인으로서 보편적인 길을 찾고 있다. 그 그림의 울림은 고요하지만 투명하고 찬란하 여, 보는 이들을 부드럽게 위무한다.

Text and Water Drops On the Paintings of Kim Tschang-Yeul

The label “water drop painter” never fails to follow Kim Tschang-Yeul. I am probably not the only one who feels an inexplicable serenity at facing a plane full of numerous water drops big and small upon a raw canvas or faint background, a canvas alive with nature’s rhythm. When

Korean Contemporary Art Exhibition opened in public art museums all over Japan in 1983, most submissions consisted of solemn monochrome paintings. I recall Kim Tschang-Yeul’s paintings, while stylistically similar to those monochromes, emanating a soft and peaceful air that does not push away the audience - perhaps owing to the familiarity of water drop motifs.

Even afterward, Kim’s works were often introduced at art galleries in Tokyo centering around water drop paintings. This is why we perceived the artist and water drops as inseparable within our familiarity of his works. Nevertheless, in fact we, had simply not yet grasped other creative realms he unveiled afterward. From the 80s to the present, he has honed in on another crucial theme: none other than text, not hangeul (Korean alphabet) nor the English alphabet, but Chinese characters.

Sakamoto Zenzo Museum (坂本善三美術館) will display Kim’s works in their first solo exhibition of a foreign artist, particularly including his Chinese character series. This would be the first time the Japanese audience makes acquaintance with works of this Chinese character motif.

In this sense, the exhibition is expected to reveal a new side of Kim Tschang-Yeul, not previously recognized.

Born in 1929, Kim belongs to the generation that experienced the Korean War during early adulthood. Since he actually fought in the war, he must have inevitably experienced

its brutal reality - yet, he remains silent on this front to this day. Like artists of his generation, Kim was serenaded by the Art Informel movement of the 1960s. After studying in New York from the mid to late 60s, he moved back to Korea for a time and then to Paris in the 70s, where he lives and works into this day. But he still makes sure to annually spend at least a few months at his studio near Seoul. This double life of dwelling in the drastically different cultural environments of East and West, and the heightened awareness of his country’s cultural endemicity and his self-identity, must have cast a thick shadow on his works.

I visited Kim’s atelier near Seoul by chance, where I saw huge works-in-progress on canvas, works on paper, and a few recent pieces meticulously organized in a high ceilinged studio.

Of course the collection included not only recent works but earlier water drop paintings and those from Informel years. The artist was kind to my frontless inquiries, gladly showing all the different works one by one. Thanks to this, I could witness with my own eyes the trajectory of his work that I had only known through reproduced images. The solidity of matière most catches the eye from the Informel-esque paintings of the mid-60s. A few lines or color fields in the shape of lines, for example, would sit on top of a dark background of orange and burgundy. In a way they are reminiscent of Mark Rothko’s line-shaped color fields, and yet unlike the boundlessly vast space Rothko creates, Kim’s pictorial space flaunts an acute sharpness in the sturdiness of screen. The texture constructed through a laborious process of layering thick paint then wiping it away may lean closer to the thick canvases of Jean Fautrier (1898-1964) or Wols (1913-1951) where the canvas itself emerges as a heavy wall that seizes and surrounds viewers - and the lines nestled within, and stained grains of color, as deep wounds.

Kim Tschang-Yeul himself described Informel painting as “the expression of an emotion, an urge to howl and to shout”.1 Of course, he knew Informel through its manifesto by critic Michel Tapié (1909-1987), published in Japanese art magazine Mizue (みずゑ), as well as through actual works at Paris Biennale and other physical displays. However, this interest was less an uncritical obsequence to popular trends in the West than a fervent confession of emotions endured by the era and the individual that inhabited it. (fig. 1, 2, p.118) Quite contrary to the heavy, claustrophobic Informel , water drop paintings brim with

transparent and serene beauty. The inception of the water drop series goes all the way back to 1972, when the artist was working in Paris, in the form of water drop motifs in Rite and Phenomenon series painted between 1970 and 1971. It looks as if some kind of liquid is oozing from the cracks on the surface of the painting which implies latent wounds. It is a thick secretion like droplets of mercury with the feel of an inorganic material. These water drops have been appeared unrolled down from his works from 1972 onwards, having a water-like property that is about to roll off the paintings. Then the earlier series can be considered the transitional period between Informel and post-1972 water drop periods where, eventually, the liquids secreted by walls have washed off of all agony and grime to crystallize as droplets upon the pristine fabric.

From afar, Kim Tschang-Yeul’s water drops are convincingly real. At a closer look, one notices that each droplet consists of outlines in acute curvatures, white highlights, reflected lights depicted in dull yellow brushstrokes, and shadows of dark brown. In effect, each is no more than an accumulation of the material of oil paint - still, at a distance, they undeniably wear the guise of water drops. One may come to the simple conclusion that these paintings inherit Realism in Western Art since the Renaissance that took its most radical form trompe-l’oeil, or that they are the result of Hyperrealism’s international popularization in the 70s.

However, we should refrain from regarding Kim’s paintings as Realism. Think about how water drops are formed in the real world - how water forms small spheres upon any surface, like glass windows, stone walls, or lotus leaves, by surface tension. They are not immortal forms but only images of a fleeting moment. It is important to note that the background on which droplets form is barely revealed in all of Kim’s paintings. Instead, water drops always appear on a neutral and abstract backdrop. The canvas thus retains its character as the material that it is, as fabric, not as illusionistic space, while it highlights the illusion of water drops constructed with brushes. The transformation of accumulated oil paint into water drop is only a visual illusion. But since the canvas remains in its original state, it is not the entire pictorial space that creates illusions - if anything, the audience is always catapulted back to reality (On the other hand, in the mid-70s, Kim had also smeared sand or attached wooden panels on top of canvas before layering on water drops. In this instance, the wooden panel or sand enters pictorial space not as illusions but as tangible materials - which is no less different from the materiality of canvas as a background).

If these are not merely illusionistic paintings homaging Realism, what was Kim

Kim’s paintings do not arrange water drops in regular sizes and margins. Rather, each droplet differs subtly in its size and shape, which, of course, is not coincidental. Each is either big or small, obtuse or oblong, straight or skewed. Over time, its luster sags further downward due to gravity, morphing as if smeared, eventually to pulverize and disappear. The pulverized droplet would absorb into the fabric to become a stain or evaporates in the end. Such are the various manifestations of a droplet under transience of time, disappearing as easily as it first appeared.

In other words, Kim’s work is a crystallization on canvas of the temporality already inherent in a droplet. By visualizing images of split moments, the artist reveals multitudinous iterations of water drops as they are produced within time. It is a painting of time itself.

Some canvases are filled with droplets of whimsical sizes, while others house one single droplet like a crown jewel - or, just a few droplets in a corner, yielding an expanse of empty space on the plane. Some place water drops in between dozens of scattered water stains that become the protagonist of the work flaunting their various shapes and forms (Besides, these stains are often painted from the backside of the canvas which assure its unique texture and spatiality).

These differently sized and shaped droplets are arranged on the limited space of the canvas in a balanced yet non-static array. The artist’s intention in water drop paintings is reflected mainly in the composition. In other words, the shapes and forms drawn on the canvas realize the artist's intention. This arises, however, not from sequential logic but from a certain rhythm of life omnipresent throughout the universe. We see “all-over” works filled entirely with droplets without a centerpoint, or others that employ empty space as a move to reveal existence through absence. A completely blank, nondescript background would sprawl over the majority of the canvas while just a few droplets land in one corner - a composition so subtle it verges on mischief. The beauty and order of poetic space dominate the canvas. Here, the spatial matrix of the old East remains well alive.

Kim’s water drop series are paintings that survey time and space, so to speak, with droplets as their medium. Having worked as an artist far away from his homeland, the artist discovered his own task in staying rooted in Eastern traditions while pursuing universal issues of painting. Water drops were precisely the vessel befitting this task.

Chinese characters first appeared in Kim Tschang-Yeul’s paintings in 1981. Then onwards from the mid-80s we see a few intermittent trials and in the late 80s a serious application.

He labels his work after the late 80s “Recurrence.”

A typical work of this phase inscribes the Thousand-Character Classic text embarking from ‘Tian di xuan huang(天地玄黃, Heaven and Earth Dark and Yellow)’ in a cleanly square style, from the right side of the canvas making all the way to the other edge in orderly fashion. However, such works do not only deal with Chinese characters. Layered and juxtaposed upon the text are countless water drops; furthermore, since where the droplets are layered the Chinese characters have been painted with fainter colors, it appears as if the characters are about to dissolve and disappear in water. Sometimes these characters occupy the entire canvas, other times they sit on the peripheries with spacious void in the middle. Some works feature enlarged characters as if under a close-up, while others feature those written in red. Either way, the canvas is no longer merely a backdrop but a sort of text in itself that houses Chinese characters, and the water drops are placed on it.

Unlike the earlier water drop series, the new element of Chinese characters may seem to dissipate the force behind brute expression, even to weaken thematic focus. However, this impression only makes sense in lieu of reproduced images, and is not felt at all at in-person experiences of these works. Rather, the insertion of a non-pictorial element of text transforms the meaning of Kim’s paintings.

Thousand-Character Classic text was written by Xingsi Zhou (周興嗣, 469-521) of the ancient Chinese Yang Dynasty, consisting of 250 phrases and 1,000 letters starting with ‘Tian di xuan huang’ and ending with ‘Yan zai hu ye (焉哉乎也)’. It has long been used as a textbook and calligraphic practice for beginner students in not only China but the East Asian cultural sphere.

Kim Tschang-Yeul himself had learned the Thousand-Character Classic text from his grandfather.

It was in fact an essential part of the curriculum for children of the cultured and wealthy in not only Korea but wider East Asia including Japan and China. It thus served as the backbone for inheriting the culture and leisure shared by the Chinese character-using world. The Thousand-

Character Classic text served not as a mere list of Chinese characters but as a vessel for Confucian

cosmology, with its meticulous ordering based on the phonemic system - it is a symbolic visualization of East Asian civilization.

Of course, at walking the streets of Seoul nowadays, one notices most billboards written in hangeul and rarely in Chinese characters. The postwar generation in Japan also has wandered away from the Thousand-Character Classic text. But for Kim Tschang-Yeul who lived on the foreign soil far away from his homeland, the Thousand-Character Classic or Chinese characters were in themselves intense signifiers of Korean-ness, of his own cultural identity. In this sense, the label “Recurrence ” becomes very suggestive. On the one hand are memories of the cultural environment Kim grew up in and the nostalgia for childhood. On the contrary, it implies a return to Korea represented by Chinese characters and Confucianism, and in an even broader sense the inherited cultural traditions of East Asia. Yet, he does not rest at a nationalist or regionalist viewpoint but utilizes Chinese characters as symbols of the all-encompassing human civilization, history, and memory.

For a brief moment in the mid-70s, Kim painted water drops with watercolor on newspapers. Instead of the rough and coarse threadings of canvas, the tight arrangement of alphabets on the newspaper served as background. Kim explains the context of his introducing text in works as follows: “…as the picture plane grows bigger, the canvas becomes a barren field left behind when its materiality dissipates. I sometimes painted water drops upon newspaper, a commonplace object in everyday life - but if I had done so on a patternless, background-less paper, they become mere husks of droplets without the sense of transparency or mass. What is a newspaper? It is text. Then is it the English alphabet or Chinese character? Newspapers with alphabet are elegant. But it is said that the English alphabet was created from human wisdom, whereas Chinese characters were invented by the gods. Chinese characters resound infinitely and unfold without end.

Because they are the texts I first learned as a child, Thousand-Character Classic has always held a place in my heart and is able to support my water drops as their companion.” 2

To solve the spatial problem in large canvases, in other words, to prepare an accent to grasp the eye within boundless space, Kim imported newspapers to imbue water drops with transparency and mass, and layered Chinese characters on the ground as a backdrop. As previously mentioned before, it must have been the awareness of cultural identity that nudged Kim towards Chinese characters over the alphabet. This choice stimulated further contemplation on the meaning of painting deeply beyond the problems of space and form. We should note that Chinese characters are ideographic, each being an imagistic form as well as a container for meaning. This is why, in the Recurrence series, audiences outside the regions that use Chinese text may consider Chinese characters in the background as formal patterns, but those within cannot see it only as purely formal elements expelled of meaning. In one way or the other, the latter audiences will arrive at a reflection on the cosmology or historiography latent in the Thousand-Character Classi c.

For example, a number of words in the Recurrence series feature letters that dissolve and disappear in water - they almost appear as a metaphor for civilizations disintegrating under the power of nature. Facing the mother nature, what humanity has produced in civilizations will weather and implode through time. Therefore, Recurrence captures the crystallization of a single moment when nature and man collide at the center of the vast universe.

In addition to canvas, Kim Tschang-Yeul also ventured to working on paper as a part of the Recurrence series. He would use India ink and acrylic on big rolls of traditional hanji paper, crossing layer after layer of faint grey lines with green lines to cover the plane with nets and levels of color. Upon this net of colors - that actually consist of layers of Chinese characters - land a few water drops. The artist inscribes Chinese characters on paper, one after another. Because he does so with light ink or paint, the picture never grows opaque, only lucid. The background color of paper peaks out from in between nets of color. Countless overlays of Chinese characters seem to testify to history itself - civilizations in a passing moment of history crumbling to make way for the rise of another. If the rise and fall of civilizations and their repetition are in themselves history, the overlaid strata of Chinese characters are a metaphor of history.

These densely layered metaphors of history, however, diffuse a strange light. With each overlay of text, what should become darker or more opaque in fact does not. Instead emanates a primordial light from the very bottom of the strata, upon which water drops find home - like the grace of Nature that purifies the errors and miseries of history with a soft embrace. Of course,

water droplets themselves hold a luminosity - for this, I would like to name these works full of light, paintings of hope.

Kim succeeded in obtaining a grander perspective by embedding Chinese characters into painting. He had therefore realized painting as a location for sketching the status of humanity within history, the coexistence of universe and human, nature and civilization.

This exhibition is not quite sprawling in size, but will be an excellent opportunity to panoramically grasp Kim Tschang-Yeul’s creative world. It consists of developments throughout Kim’s entire oeuvre, from the Chinese character series with water drop paintings, and installation works of glass spheres that are three-dimensional iterations of water drops. Browsing through them will yield a view of where the artist stands: a search for general directions to tread as an East Asian individual, straddling both East and West yet not skewed towards either. Echoes of his painting ring about silently yet with a lucid brilliance, softly caressing and comforting viewers.
