Through Norwegian, Russian, and the Swedish Lapland to Torneå...” Complete book, large folio, 60,3x48cm Original boards, extra engraved title-page with vignette of a reindeer drawing a sledge pasted on front cover, below a pasted label with the names of the publishers Rodwell and Arch and the date 1827. Contained in a 20th Century pink solander box (Skougaard). Title-pages in English and French, 24 lithographed plates, and a loosely inserted folded map. ALL PLATES EXTENSIVELY COLOURED BY A CONTEMPORARY HAND LONDON 1827 (It exists copies with the titlepage dated 1826 by Murray) A MAGNIFICENT BOOK, ONE OF VERY FEW COPIES IN ORIGINAL COLOUR. According to Abbey I, page 249: “tinted, coloured and heightened with varnish”. The plate book was published in different printing issues: Black and white, printed with a tone, printed on different paper etc. In this rare coloured “state” it must be the finest excisting plate book of Lapland. 15 or 16 plates are from Norway. According to Schiøtz II our copy is the variant with the plates directly printed on to the paper. The map of Scandinavia by Hagelstam is the same which was regularly inserted in “A winter in Lapland…” but was probably by the publisher not intended to follow “Winter sketches…” . Some light rubbing, scuffing and a few scratches to covers, fresh and clean plates. Excellent book. Provenance: Jonas Skougaard (1800 – 1968), his extensive notes in pencil on inside front cover and the inventory no. K-12245. He says he has compared this copy with two other copies in black and white as well as one coloured copy with the title-page of 1826. Private European Collection since c. 1970 Literature: E.H.
