It is with great pleasure that the City of Morrow recognizes the Filipino American Community for their service and the enhancement of our communities. For over 400 years the Filipino community has worked tirelessly to make America a better place. Countless stories of Filipinos working to raise their families and being dedicated citizens of this great country. The City of Morrow celebrates October as Filipino American History Month where we recognize the significant role Filipinos have played in American history, and our local community as well. For each victory that has been earned by the Asian community, we must remember those in the Filipino community that cleared the path to allow access to higher education, capital markets for independent businesses, and the pursuit of the American dream. Their sacrifices have not been forgotten; they have become the foundation of something much greater. The backbone of the future for all mankind. The Filipino Community has made history. From World War II to Iraq; men and women have given their lives to protect our great country. Those past efforts are beginning to be recognized as well. Congress has asked the Navy to name a new ship after Telesforo Trinidad, a Filipino American sailor who received the Medal of Honor in 1915. Trinidad, who saved his crewmembers after boiler explosions aboard the armored cruiser USS San Diego, is the only Filipino American and the only Asian American sailor to receive the Medal of Honor. A future USS Telesforo Trinidad would become the first warship named after an American of Filipino descent. The stories we read our children about your community grows each year. In fact, Marvel Comics just added Filipino American Ari Agbayani as Marvel's newest addition to its growing list of heroes. Your community now stand beside Captain America and Superman as legendary fighters for justice. That fight for justice came from farmer workers, health care professionals, educators, lawyers, and students. Each generation more courageous and better off than the last. However, no story is more personal than your own. Morrow’s Filipino Americans continue to lead this community as they focus on a greater tomorrow. A place where they long ago earned a seat at the table. A place where their culture is appreciated, and they are a valued member of our community. As October begins, we sincerely thank each of you for your valued time and commitment to making Morrow a fantastic place to raise your family, operate your business, and gain an excellent education. Our future has no limits, and with the grace of God we can collectively earn our place in history. One that will impress our ancestors so that when we meet them again, they will applaud our use of the time we were given. Thank you again for all that the Filipino American Community does for Morrow and this nation. We are forever grateful. John Lampl Mayor

Following satisfactory completion of his Surgical residency, he went and enjoyed a relatively successful private surgical practice. FAHM Celebration of Faith - Oct 2, 2021 By Lehnie Estacio We thank the Governor of Georgia, Brian Kemp, for proclaiming the month of October 2021 as the Filipino American History Month (FAHM) in Georgia, to promote and re ect on the history, rich legacy and contributions of Filipino Americans that enhanced the freedom, prosperity, and greatness of this nation. Along our theme “Together, We Thrive’, the monthlong celebration of FAHM commenced on Saturday October 2 with the Holy Mass and potluck reception at Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Cumming, with the Church Pastor Fr. Diosmar Natad, celebrating the Holy Mass. In his homily, Fr. Natad exhorted us to be testaments of ‘Love in Action’, and participate in our Lord Jesus Christ’s mission. He explained that we ful ll Christ’s mission when we say a kind word to someone, give a smile, or a hug. We ful ll His mission when we care for and love our family. We ful ll His mission when we visit the sick, give water to the thirsty, feed the hungry, clothe the naked, comfort the grieving, and do other acts of love. Fr. Natad also said that we Filipinos are a people of faith and encouraged us to hold fast to our valued traditions. Before the conclusion of the Mass, Fr. Natad called on our Honorary Consul General Ray Donato to read the Proclamation of FAHM. We thank the following Mass participants: Emelinda Gruta, Dr Romeo Baccay, Deana Taganas, Lottie Caldwell, Carmen Diaz, Lolita Elliott, Josephine Gutlay, Lilia Hagler, Jovy Holt, Venus Soriano, Mercy Williams, Beth Davis, Venus Soriano, Jane Rolen, Willy Blanco and Good Shepherd Choir led by Melonie and Danny Amoyo. October 9: “Sariling Tugtugin, Himig at Sayaw’ With the emergence of the worldwide pandemic, we were met with a surge of Zoom meetings, Facetime calls, and virtual programs. The FilipinoAmerican Association of Greater Atlanta (Fil-Am), like many other organizations, had to pivot to continue our mission. Thus, the concept of a virtual recital project, the first in the history of the association, was born. The theme, “Sariling Tugtugin, Himig at Sayaw,” meaning our own melody, music, and dance provided an opportunity for Fil-Am’s younger generation (ages 3-18) to perform and exhibit their talents to the community. The program included a wide variety of the piano, violin, and dancing dressed up in t h e i r n u m b e r. T h e with guest appearances performances in ballet, “You,” and a piano Mo.”

HIGHLIGHTS OF FAHM OCTOBER 10, 2021 EVENT “PANAHON NA PARA MAGKITA” by Dr. Joel Aquino Through the initiative of the Galing Foundation Inc (GFI), Fil-AM professionals gathered at River Forks Park on October 10, 2021 to celebrate the role of Filipino professionals in shaping the history of the United States. Looking back in time, the initial wave of Filipino immigrant workers were mostly agricultural workers and later transitioned to other professions and skills. Most notable are the hiring of Filipino nurses across the decades and lately Filipino teachers as well due to the acute demand of health care and education professionals. Part of their earnings are remitted to the Philippines to assist family members and help in nation building. As of 2020, the Philippines received about US$12 billion personal remittance from the US-based Pinoys or more than a third of the entire remittance of OFWs (Overseas Filipino Workers). The Oct 10 event was a huge success as there were more than 100 attendees in an open air perfect weather setting. 5 guest speakers coming from the elds of teaching, nursing, engineering/sciences, law/business and military were invited to share their immigration journey to the US. To add spice to the event, parlor games were played and outside vendors peddled their wares including a Filipino dish caterer. The event was event featured in an ABS-CBN news https://www.youtube.com/watch? v=aJZyGo_qulw

"Pasyalan at Kwentuhan” By Arjho C. Turner

October 16, ”Pasyalan at Kwentuhan” held at the Atlanta Fernbank Museum of Natural History was one of the activities for October in celebration of the Filipino American History Month (FAHM) in the state of Georgia. Fil-Am kids were pre-registered by their parents and assembled at the main entrance of the museum starting at 9:30 AM. Each participant was given their all-day access to the museum even after the FAHM activities, a back pack with some goodies and book of the late Fil-Am labor union Leader Larry Itliong. The event took off with a tour of the museum starting at the Dinosaur World, the Re ection of Culture exhibition space especially the ongoing Manobo exhibition representing the Philippines, the main highlight which is the storytelling about journey for justice focused on the life of the late Filipino-American labor union leader Larry Itliong. Kids were very well-behaved, following instructions of teacher Isa, and were very interactive during the storytelling. Certi cate of Participation was given to each child participant before going to a movie treat about the world of dinosaur millions of years ago at the 3D theater. Some awesome feedback from the participants: Child: Today is the best because I get to be friends with 15 other kids. Child: I love the food! Child: I learned something about history. Parent: I am so happy to be here and this is my rst time in Fernbank Museum. We are thankful to the participation of the kids along with their parents, the donors/sponsors for some of the participants and the volunteers engaged in this FAHM event. Thank you to Galing Foundation, Inc. Culture and Arts Program Director Isa Thompson for the great success of this event and the coordination with Fernbank Museum! It was indeed a historic rst Pasyalan at Kwentuhan at the Fernbank Museum for the Filipino-American History Month (FAHM) celebration!

“Panaderia Chronicles – Pan, Palaman at Kasaysayan” By Anne Marie Logarta

In celebration of Filipino American History Month (FAHM), PACCGA hosted a virtual event during its monthly Members meeting held last October 18. Award-winning coauthors, Amy Abendano-Uy and Jenny B. Orillos were the featured guest speakers. Their book “Panaderia: Philippine Bread, Biscuit and Bakery Traditions,” was on the best-seller list of National Book Store and the Philippine Daily Inquirer’s “Top 10 Books” for Year 2015 in the Philippines. Part 1 of the talk featured Speaker Amy who covered the “Pan” (bread) and “Palaman” ( lling) part of the talk. She recounted stories about popular Philippine breads such as pan de sal, pan de coco, Spanish bread, monay, ensaymada, among others, and their pairings such as mantequilla, coffee, hot chocolate, ice cold soft drinks, pancit (noodles), etc. She also covered the different types of pan de sal such as the egg pan de sal, malunggay (moringa) and kalabasa (squash) pan de sal, ube-cheese pan de sal, sour dough pan de sal, adobo pan de sal or pan de coco. Other breads discussed were the monay such as the Iloilo monay, “Inakupo” (Oh my mother) and “Juskopo” (Oh my God) monay and the ensaymada (festive bread), pan Amerikano or “Tasty,” “Kalihim,” also known as pan de pula or pan de regla. She also noted the resurgence of baking during the current global pandemic because of time we had on our hands and our desire to connect and “break bread” with family and friends. Part 2 of the talk featured Speaker Jenny who covered the “Kasaysayan” (history) part of the talk. She narrated the important moments in Philippine history that shaped the way to how Filipinos bake bread from during the Spanish colonial period through Post World War II. She also gave the origins of the “panaderia” (bakery), the tools and equipment used, and how bread-making at home evolved. The talk was an interesting insight on how the authors regard bread and bread traditions as tied to the Filipino’s daily life, rituals and beliefs and also a re ection of Filipino values and personal and family relationships. Whether you prefer a salty, bland or sweet “pan de sal” (bread of salt) or any other Philippine bread, Filipinos eat a little bit of home in the Philippines whenever they bite into their pan de sal wherever they may be. Philippine bread and bread-making traditions and eating together, whether it be in your home, at a friend’s house, a picnic in a park, an organization’s event or a church social, is essentially a story of migration, of family, of “barkada” (group of friends) and of memories growing up in our native land and gives all of us a sense of identity and community. “When we break bread and give it to each other, fear vanishes and God becomes very close.“ -Henri J.M. Nouwen
