B E L L E de J O U R SPRING 2020 Inspired by the French film of the same title, the Belle de Jour collection embodies a rebellious and sultry character, played by Catherine Deneuve. As a bored housewife exploring her sexual cravings, she can turn even the most demure outfit into a glamorous, feminine statement. With that spirit in mind, designers Galia Lahav and Sharon Sever have created an ode to the beauty of independent women everywhere. Each Belle de Jour design captures a beautiful slice of power, using couture techniques and a palette of brilliant shades. Gathered bodices and statement sleeves provide a sense drama, while soft silk draping and sharp necklines present an elegant silhouette. Even the smallest details tell the narrative of a woman with a bold personality, from the vibrant lip motif to a sparkling meander of crystals and sequins. Beautiful bows can be found woven throughout the collection, tying together bodices and shoulder seams. Saturated shocks of color, including flame red, deep fuschia, bold baby pink and endless sky blue are juxtaposed alongside stark black and pure white. When rendered in classic couture fabrics—taffeta, organza, silk jersey and wool—each iconic design comes to life. Through the subtlest touch the classics are reworked, like a ball gown that appears to be entirely deconstructed with its stunning interior on display. Or the column gown with edges that seem to explode with waves of motion. Indeed, these are made for the woman who knows her angles and loves to strike a pose. Through themes of rebellion, elegance and self-expression, Belle de Jour poses the question: Can something be beautiful and powerful at once? Naturally, the answer is: but of course.
