VISION & VOICE KATHY BUIST LORI COZEN-GELLER

SEPTEMBER - OCTOBER 2019

As we anticipate autumn and the flourish of color here in New England, Galerie d’Orsay presents not one, but two new bodies of work as part of our celebrated Fall 2019 Exhibition, VISION & VOICE / KATHY BUIST & LORI COZEN-GELLER. While at first glance both artists seem to be working in opposite styles – compare Buist’s lush, color-drenched canvases with Cozen-Geller’s sleek, minimalist wall sculptures – their shared message is one and the same. Each artist, in their own way, taps into the universality of human emotion and rejoices in the diversity of emotions and the many ways to share and express them: Buist and Cozen-Geller share one vision, one voice.

KATHY BUIST

Kathy Buist’s paintings offer us a respite – a sanctuary to which we might escape. That sentiment is at the heart of every single canvas, guiding her brushstrokes as she crafts her dreamy and ethereal landscapes. With a deep love of nature stemming from her childhood (the artist was raised on a flower farm in the Midwest: color is in her soul), Buist’s paintings transcend our traditional understanding of ‘landscape’. She masterfully elevates the colors and textures found in nature, pushing the boundaries of rational and irrational. Buist’s newest body of paintings – ‘Autumn Rhythms’ – is grounded in the transitory nature of the seasons. Summer turns to fall, fall turns to winter and so on. There’s a transformative element that accompanies a New England autumn, in which the end of one cycle promises the birth of something new. Welcoming her paintings into our homes is welcoming all of nature’s inherent change as well. And yes, Buist’s paintings reassure us that change, no matter how difficult, is ultimately good.

LORI COZEN-GELLER During the art process, Cozen-Geller looks to capture the emotions of the heart and mind and place them into visual form within space. “This process is a kinetic one for me. It is a journey that begins with a feeling, evolves into a powerful emotion and is then transformed into art. By freezing emotions and placing them into concrete form, I can then sit back and view the strength and meaning that now lies within the piece that has materialized as art. ” “There are several components that merge together to form my work. The dimensions of the piece along with the color and finish represent the power of the emotion that the piece was born out of. The decision to use sharp angles versus soft curves is determined by the nature of the emotions that are being represented. It is as if the emotions themselves dictate the specifications of how the art is developed.” Lori Cozen-Geller grew up in Los Angeles, California. Her education includes a BA from the University of Southern California. She lives in Venice, California and works out of her Venice studio. Lori’s first work took shape within hours of her father’s passing in which the artist translated her feelings of love and loss onto a scrap of paper, the blueprint for her first piece of work.
