As the Faculty prepares for our new One Spadina facility, GALDSU wanted to better understand the culture of our current student body. How do we design, learn, and collaborate together in this current space, and what changes could we implement to make these experiences more productive and enjoyable? On Wednesday, November 13 2013, GALDSU hosted a hands-on programming workshop for the students of Daniels. Facilitated in the student lounge, students were encouraged to comment on a series of questions : PERSONAL SPACE: Where do you work now? What characteristics define a good work environment for you? STUDIO/COLLABORATIVE SPACE: What do you like/need in your studio group setting? TOP 3 IMPROVEMENTS: What modifications to these environments would improve your creative process? UNDER $100 IDEA: Brainstorm small implementable projects and ideas that could have a large impact on our Faculty culture and experience. CATCH PHRASE: On opening day for “One Spadina,” what is the headline on the front page of the newspaper? Over the course of four hours, more than 50 students across disciplines and years came to provide their feedback, leading to more than 200 suggestions and ideas. This workshop is the first of many faculty-wide conversations about our culture and student experience. This report documents student feedback, identifies common themes, and strategizes actionable opportunities for our current 230 College facility and goals for our future One Spadina home.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

One of the key findings in the GALDSU Mental Health Report (conducted Fall 2013), is that Daniels students are split between working at home or at studio. The report identifies a series of factors, “mainly environmental such as noise level, air quality, limited number of computers, and lack of working space make studio an unattractive place to work. The feedback provided during this workshop mirror those findings, and help provide further insight on the environmental needs of our student body. Adaptability and flexibility, access to a variety of work areas, and the physical condition of these spaces directly influence student engagement and our design processes. Many factors are associated with building infrastructure, including washroom configuration, ample power, lighting adaptability, water fountains and the like. Implementing these changes in our current facility might not be feasible. Our hope is that considerations are made, and these preferences are taken into account and incorporated where possible into the new One Spadina facility. Furniture solutions and small environmental changes could help improve the studio environment in the interim. Reappropriating under utilized space might provide opportunities for informal lounge or break-out areas. Fresh paint or inexpensive cosmetic solutions might make kitchen and washroom spaces more appealing. A walk-through with the Registrar, Chief Administrative Officer, Facilities Officer, GALDSU and student representatives is scheduled to address these short-term opportunities. These long and short term goals are attainable, and have the potential to directly, positively impact student engagement and the culture within Daniels. GALDSU is committed to representing the student body, and will continue this conversation through follow-up workshops, outreach activities, and constructive discussion both with faculty and the student body. Please direct further questions and suggestions to galdsu@daniels.utoronto.ca.
