converge

diverge This year’s publication - The Annual 14 - reveals the dynamic and exciting nature of design at the John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape & Design by tracking the paths of students, both physically and through an exploration of design ideas from the Fall 2013 to Winter 2014. We present these works in two parts: Converge & Diverge. The work is grouped according to program and year of study to showcase a diversity of projects, from the early core studios through to thesis. Students who pursue design at the Daniels Faculty come from NBOZ EJƊFSFOU EJTDJQMJOFT CBDLHSPVOET BOE XPSMEWJFXT CVU XIBU VOJƋFT UIFN JT B DPNNPO EFTJSF UP PCTFSWF BOBMZ[F BOE DSBGU UIF physical world around them. Regardless of the program, from the collective knowledge emerges a learning environment that fosters critical thinking, exploration, creativity and lasting relationships that forever change the students, and the faculty. As an incubator for the next generation of designers, the Daniels Faculty prepares students to draw on their previous experience, and to think broadly about the pressing issues of today. Throughout the development of The Annual 14, our editorial and design decisions were made in reference to the conceptual idea of converging and diverging. To further elaborate the theme, we asked students to include details of their lives prior to Daniels, their travel experiences throughout the year, and for graduating students, their lives following convocation. The answers reveal and highlight the collective wealth of knowledge and experience from which students draw throughout their design formation, enriching the studio environment and critical discourse at the Daniels Faculty. This volume highlights today’s design challenges. Unprecedented in their scale and scope, they require the breadth and depth of FYQFSUJTF UP SFBMJ[F OFX GVUVSFT "T EFTJHOFST XF FYQFSJFODF the world around us in-situ. We use all of our senses to observe, document and discover. This iterative process of imagining and creating engages us in the physical environment through critical research and conceptual inquiry of built and un-built places. These exploratory paths - converging and diverging - are what make Daniels students poised to bring forth remarkable, original and ground-breaking visions for the future.
