Celebrating Earth Day In the decades leading up to the first Earth Day, Americans were consuming vast amounts of leaded gas through massive and inefficient automobiles. Industry belched out smoke and sludge with little fear of the consequences from either the law or bad press. Air pollution was commonly accepted as the smell of prosperity. Until this point, mainstream America remained largely oblivious to environmental concerns and how a polluted environment threatens human health. However, the stage was set for change with the publication of Rachel Carson’s New York Times bestseller Silent Spring in 1962. The book represented a watershed moment, selling more than 500,000 copies in 24 countries as it raised public awareness and concern for living organisms, the environment and the inextricable links between pollution and public health. Senator Gaylord Nelson, the junior senator from Wisconsin, had long been concerned about the deteriorating environment in the United States. Then in January 1969, he and many others witnessed the ravages of a massive oil spill in Santa Barbara, California. Inspired by the student anti-war movement, Senator Nelson wanted to infuse the energy of student anti-war protests with an emerging public consciousness about air and water pollution. Senator Nelson announced the idea for a teach-in on college campuses to the national media, and persuaded Pete McCloskey, a conservation-minded Republican Congressman, to serve as his co-chair. Senator Gaylord Nelson recruited Denis Hayes, a young activist, to organize the campus teachins and to scale the idea to a broader public, and they choose April 22, a weekday falling between Spring Break and Final Exams, to maximize the greatest student participation. Recognizing its potential to inspire all Americans, Hayes built a national staff of 85 to promote events across the land and the effort soon broadened to include a wide range of organizations, faith groups, and others. They changed the name to Earth Day, which immediately sparked national media attention, and caught on across the country. Groups that had been fighting individually against oil spills, polluting factories and power plants, raw sewage, toxic dumps, pesticides, freeways, the loss of wilderness and the extinction of wildlife united on Earth Day around these shared common values. Earth Day 1970 achieved a rare political alignment, enlisting support from Republicans and Democrats, rich and poor, urban dwellers and farmers, business and labor leaders. By the end of 1970, the first Earth Day led to the creation of the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the passage of other first-of-their-kind environmental laws, including the National Environmental Education Act, the Occupational Safety and Health Act, and the Clean Air Act. Two years later congress passed the Clean Water Act.

By Mark Rivers Are you drawn to the idea of growing your own produce, free from harmful pesticides and cost constraints, all at your convenience and preference? Many people think that the choice of seed quality is not so essential to the growth of good fruits and vegetables, but in fact much of the work lies in this very aspect! That is why it becomes essential to know how to select the best seed, reproduce it effectively and store it properly to keep its properties intact over the years. By Caroline Jones Over the last century, global plastic usage has grown from zero to the point where humanity produces its own weight in plastic every single year. The devastating impact on the planet is well documented, from polluting oceans to harming wildlife. Filled with simple and practical ways to reduce the amount of plastic you use—such as buying loose fruit and vegetables and ditching the bottled water—this little book will help you find safe, reusable, and affordable alternatives in all areas of your life. Not only will you discover the health, cost, and waste benefits, but you’ll also find tips on how to handle the plastic you already have at home.

HOW TO GO GREEN ON DIET: Boosting your wellbeing with plant-based food

By Emily Fallon There are several advantages to our health from a plantbased diet, according to research. For instance, it may reduce the risk of heart disease and some cancers. Additionally, it can aid in weight management because foods made from plants typically have lower calorie counts and higher fiber content, which helps prolong satiety. A plant-based diet can also reduce inflammation, enhance gut health, and possibly aid in the treatment or prevention of diabetes Registered dietician Emily Fallon gives readers a clear explanation of the advantages of a plantbased diet as well as useful advice on how to make the transition.

Spring Cleaning

The Art of Becoming a Minimalist Spring is here and it’s time for spring cleaning. It may seem like a daunting task, but the good news is that there are simple ways to make it easier and more enjoyable. One of the most popular trends in recent years is minimalist spring cleaning, which is all about simplifying your living space and getting rid of excess clutter. The idea is to focus on what truly matters and eliminate anything that doesn’t bring you joy or serve a practical purpose. In this article, we will provide you with some practical tips on how to achieve a minimalist spring cleaning, from decluttering and simplifying your decor to creating designated spaces and digital decluttering. So, if you’re ready to simplify your life and create a space that reflects your values, keep reading to discover the power of minimalist spring cleaning.

Make A Plan

Take an inventory

When it comes to decluttering and simplifying your home, it’s important to have a plan in place. Here are some steps you can take to create an effective plan:

Start by taking an inventory of the items in your home. Make a list of everything you have, and then go through it to identify duplicates.

Assess your home

Once you’ve identified duplicates, decide which items you actually need. For example, you may only need one set of dishes or one set of sheets for each bed in your home. Keep the items you need and get rid of the rest.

Take a look at your home and determine which areas need the most attention. Do you have a cluttered closet, overflowing kitchen cabinets, or a disorganized home office? Make a list of the areas you want to tackle.

Set realistic goals Once you have your list, set realistic goals for each area. For example, if you’re decluttering your closet, your goal might be to donate or sell half of your clothes. Be specific and realistic with your goals.

Schedule your time Block off time on your calendar to work on each area. This will help you stay on track and prevent procrastination. Be sure to give yourself enough time to complete each task.

Gather supplies Make sure you have everything you need to declutter and organize each area. This might include garbage bags, boxes for donations, and cleaning supplies. 12 March/April 2024

Keep only what you need

Donate or sell Once you’ve decided which items to get rid of, consider donating them to a local charity or selling them online or in a yard sale. This way, someone else can benefit from the items you no longer need.

Celebrate your progress Finally, don’t forget to celebrate your progress along the way. Take before and after photos of each area you tackle to see how far you’ve come. Treat yourself to something special once you’ve completed your plan.

The Power of Minimalist Spring Cleaning Minimalism is not just a trend. It’s a lifestyle that can bring you peace, happiness, and fulfillment. So, as you start your spring cleaning journey, remember to take it one step at a time and focus on what truly matters. DOMESTIC TRAVEL The Rocky Mountains If you’re an avid hiker, visiting the Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado is a must. The elevation ranges from 8,000 to 14,000 feet above sea level, surrounded by forests, meadows, and diverse wildlife. Along with hiking, you can go camping or take guided tours of the park to immerse yourself fully in the environment and learn from an expert about the ecosystem. These mountain ranges truly are a national treasure.

The Florida Keys Some of the most diverse wildlife habitats in the country can be found at home in the Florida Keys. You’ll find no shortage of sustainable lodging choices. For example, Islander Resort utilizes electricity from its solar panels. Grassy Flats provides all recycled materials in guest rooms and grows the fruit and herbs for its bar onsite. While you’re there, visit Dry Tortugas National Park. It’s primarily open water, and no food or fuel is available at your destination.
