EDITOR ' S LETTER The influence of science fiction has drastically changed the way in which we experience our day to day lives. From the detachment and etherealness of Transrealism to the flying cars and robots of Futurism, technology that once seemed so far away now finds itself inserted into our most basic tasks. With our spring Sci-Fi issue, we wanted to explore the different facets of science fiction and interpret those perceptions.

How long have you been performing? About one year. We met through jamming at local shows together and wanting to push out some dope tunes. What was the inspiration behind forming KYLE? Three smelly dudes who like to jam, gnar, and count. Math rock’s all about playing in different time signatures. We can never fully finish a song because it has the potential to be so much better, therefore everything is always a work in progress, even the songs we play live. How did you come up with the name KYLE? We needed a name and we chose Kyle. Everybody knows a Kyle. Everyone is Kyle. There is something in your soul that resonates with the name, like, “Hey! I’m Kyle too!”

What is your favorite Science-Fiction Movie? Spanglish! No, joking, it would have to be Event Horizon. It’s such a dope flick that really makes you think about the world in an other worldly dimension. We try to kind of convey that theme in our tunes and music. How would you describe your musical sound? “Pip fartin on a snare drum.” Really, I guess just coming up with effects that sound drony, yet sparatic, throw in some intricate math counting and configuration, all while having smooth and resourceful drumming.

The Future for Star Wars and Abrams’ New Directing Role By:Alley Walls

Thirty- eight years ago, a science fiction franchise began, and it was known as Star Wars. George Lucas created a phenomenon in the setting “along time ago, in a galaxy far far away.” This series is composed of a series of space adventures, all with the goal to save the empire from its predicted undoing. A team of three, including Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, and Ben Kenobi set out with the mission to restore justice. With the first introduction of this film, viewers were blown away by the outrageous special effects for the time in combination with the creative production design of a galactic era in an otherworldly setting among planets, flying vehicles, and robots. For this reason, the movie series not only grew in immense popularity at the time, but has also acquired an even larger following in the many years following. Since this huge breakthrough, the rights to Star Wars, and all of Lucas

film for that matter, have since been acquired by Disney, a deal that was met in 2012. Disney, with the help of director JJ Abrams, is attempting to prove itself worthy of this holding now by making its new Star Wars debut with the December premier of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, a movie set 30 years after Return of the Jedi, presented in all of 2D, 3D, and IMAX 3D. According to Abrams, the key to this new legacy is to return to the roots with “emotion rather than explanation at the forefront.” Without even being out yet, the film has already broken records. The second trailer is of now the most viewed trailer on Youtube within 24 hours of release. The film is also expected to be a box office sensation, as its predicted to beat out Jurassic World as the record highest earning worldwide opening, and The Twighlight Saga: Eclipse for the widest release ever. Though the plotline is still under wraps from the public,

“I can tell you this. It’s really, really good. Trust me, it’s really good.” these trailers have revealed subtle hints and clues about the upcoming movie. It is known that the movie will revolve around an opposition between a Dark Side group known as The First Order and The Resistance, all in a frontier desert world called Jakku. While the cast will still include the classics Luke, Leia, and Han Solo, new characters have also been brought on, a few including roles acted by Lupita Nyong’o, Adam Driver, and Gwendoline Christie. With these new characters, this sequel will also introduce new and improved droids and more extravagant ships and shuttles. As of now, the infamous Luke Skywalker has not

appeared in any of the trailers, bringing may to question if he is in the sequel, if he has altered his appearance, or if he possibly has transferred over to the dark side. Abrams assures fans that there is a very valid reason for his absence that the audience will just have to wait to find out with the new movie release. Abrams, however, has confirmed and promised to one thing, as he has said in his interview with Jimmy Kimmel, “I can tell you this. It’s really, really good. Trust me, it’s really good… You will not be disappointed at all. I promise you.” The day is approaching that we will be able to judge this for ourselves, but on behalf of Star Wars fans all over, we hope you’re right JJ!
