“Spin is a drawing of twisted pieces of newspaper from the New York Times, formed into a spiral, spinning out the news in a never-ending, relentless portrait of our times.” Margaret Davidson taught drawing classes at Gage from 1992-2014. She holds a BFA from the University of Michigan and an MFA from the University of Washington. She has written “Contemporary Drawing: Key Concepts and Techniques”, Watson-Guptill Publications, NY. “My landscape paintings combine observational realism with memory and imagination. I use traditional oil painting techniques, building up layers of paint to create a sense of space, light and atmosphere. Morning Fog was inspired by a misty dawn I experienced while staying in a rustic cabin on land my family owns on the South Carolina coast. It is part of a series I called The Violet Hour, in which the hue represented both a transitional time of day and a moody state of mind.” Britton started taking classes at Gage in 1997. 20th-century American artist, William Cumming (1917-2010), was a noted figurative painter and innovator associated with the Northwest School. Cumming’s representational works blur the boundaries of realism and abstract expressionism; quick brushstrokes enhancing movement in his vibrant subjects. As a life drawing instructor, Cumming would note that you could recognize a friend down the road just by their gait and posture, without ever seeing their face. Body language is a key element in his work. His career span more than 60 years from his first museum solo exhibition at Seattle Art Museum in 1941 to his 2005 retrospective at the Frye Art Museum.

The Sarkowskys have put together a choice collection of paintings and sculpture that span from 1950 to the present. With concentration on the New York School, they have carefully chosen works both for their singular quality and for their capacity to tellingly interconnect. The collection includes works by the following artists: Yayoi Kusama, Gerry Tsutakawa,

Lino Tagliapietra, Eric Fischl, Ross Bleckner, Louise Bourgeois, Adolph Gottlieb, Deborah Butterfield, Helen Frankenthaler, Howard Hodgkin, Mimmo Paladino, Frank Stella, Mark Di Suvero, Nicolas Africano, Hans Hoffman, Robert Motherwell, Alexander Calder, Sorel Etrog, Louise Nevelson, Roy Lichtenstein, James Fitzgerald, William de Kooning, Dale Chihuly, Alan Lobb, Brice Marden, Terry Winters, Joan Mitchell, Keneth Callahan, and Francis Celentano.

Meg Holgate explores the versatile medium of spray paint, playing with “light and dark, stillness and movement... soft focus and bolder shapes.” The resulting compositions capture “moments of beauty simply rendered with thin veils of muted color and lineform.” The reductive quality inherent in both the process and the outcome speaks to her continued search for the essence of things. Meg Holgate first learned about Gage in 2005 and is a longtime supporter. megholgate.com

“My favorite time of year in the Cascade Mountains is when the needles of the alpine larch, the only deciduous evergreen, turn golden. There are often only a few days after the first snowfall when they still retain their needles, and the day is sunny--usually at the beginning of October when daylight shortens. Those are the most glorious and fleeting days of the year--every year I go as much as I can to capture them. This one is one my favorites, in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness Area near Dragontail Peak.” Woolf has been teaching classes at Gage since 2017. suzewoolf-fineart.com

By getting closer to the subject I’m trying to dive deeper into the various visual and thematic possibilities of expressing the cosmic/universal truth through mundane imagery.” Klara Glosova is a current teaching artist at Gage. klaraglosova.com

Joshua Langstaff has shown in countless galleries across the US. A notable portraitist, Joshua is a two-time recipient of the Stacey Foundation Grant. After six years in Maine and two in Prague, Joshua has recently returned to the Northwest and lives in Portland.

“I have been exploring abstract acrylic painting. While I mainly work with oils and more realistic subject matter, the acrylic paint is a wonderful medium that allows a new freedom of expression for me. I hope you feel the movement of this piece, the energy, and just how much fun it is was to create this Asian inspired piece.”

Ceramic with glazes

“My aim is to marry sculpture and finish. Color heightens the emotions of each piece. This is a thrown and altered, glazed head. My aim with these pieces is to use glazes in a way that is like painting a portrait, shadow and light, a harmonious color chord and beautiful use of materials. This piece has six glazes. Each has its own rules for application, sprayed alone or in combinations. Glazing this way is complex and hard to predict. It is lush and tactile when it works.” Meg Murch began taking classes at Gage in 1996 and is currently a Gage teaching artist. megmurchsculpts.com

“I love to hike and bike in our beautiful Northwest so, as a landscape painter, I get a lot of inspiration whenever I go outside! Autumn Pool is inspired by a day spent hiking in Mt. Baker Snoqualmie National Forest. The autumn air was cool and crisp, the sky was clear cerulean blue, and the water sparkled in a mesmerizing pattern in this little pool adorned with fall color.” Kathleen Moore is a teaching artist at Gage. Charles Spitzack has been involved in the art of printmaking for over ten years. Committed to “dissolving barriers in commitment to the communal whole,” Spitzack fell in love with the medium for its ability to express this notion through both subject and process. The human figure is a recurring subject in Spitzack’s work, as movement and emotion are best expressed— and understood—through representations of the body. “Over the years I’ve learned and have come to greatly appreciate that attention to value is the difference between making a painting pop and making a painted image appear flat. In A Lively Bouquet Study, I enjoyed playing around with this art element by punching up the lightest value in the flowers to make them the focal point and appear to spring from the dark background.” Valencia Carroll first learned about Gage by attending Best of Gage in 2006 and is an Aristides Atelier alumn. valenciafineart.com

“A single line and a limited palette require the artist to tell the story of place with a crisp economy. Color, temperature, movement, and character are evoked in a few swift strokes. For me as an artist, the drawn line evokes the honest nature of a place...and creates an awareness of the strength of the Northwest but also the importance to preserve what is here.” Anita Lehmann has been taking classes at Gage since 2008. ahldraws.com

“I find the artistic rendition of people to be a satisfyingly complex challenge. My painting exemplifies my desire to explore the psychology of human interaction by using broad brush strokes and loose lines. I wanted to connect my subject to her environment by dissolving edges and weaving together her combined forms. By opening the focus beyond the main subject in this painting, a larger comparison of color relationships was possible.” Fong Baatz has been teaching at Gage since 2014. fongbaatz.com

“Paint Drawer was a cathartic experience for me. I painted it shortly after a significant life change. I’d recently become a father to two beautiful young children through adoption. At the time, my interest in still life was shifting away from the “set up” still life toward the “already there” still life. . . . In working on this painting, I let go, welcoming the moments that were beyond my control, and allowing the work to take on a life of its own.” Friel first learned about Gage in the 1990s and has been a Gage teaching artist since 1995. michaelfrielfineart.com

Exploring the versatile medium of digital drawing, Karen Hackenberg’s latest series maintains a “light-hearted yet subversive approach to the serious subject of ocean degradation,” a recurring topic in the artist’s oeuvre. A digital spin on the plein-air tradition, Hackenberg renders colorful scenes of washed up trash while sitting on the beach. “The resulting compositions provide visual metaphors for the overwhelming magnitude of the issue of marine debris.” Hackenberg is a former Gage teaching artist and is represented by Patricia Rovzar Gallery in Seattle, WA. karenhackenberg.com

With a professional background in digital art and animation, Peter Moehrle spent his entire life pursuing art. Moehrle has worked many roles across his career; from his very first job as a framer, to Background Artist for Disney, to his current job as Senior Lecturer at DigiPen.

“I find a natural attraction to the bold lines of etching and the soft tones of aquatint. Once I learned the craft, I have never looked back... I focus on the everyday. What appears mundane becomes spiritual: The utility pole is an abstract sculpture. Lighthouses are fortresses, trees, philosophers.”

Moehrle first encountered Gage Academy when he attended Drawing Jam in 2007.
